Transcript
- Lucas: Luna, welcome back to Learn Amharic with Fexingo. Ready for another episode? Luna: Absolutely! I've been practicing my vegetables. I think I have ጎመን and ነጭ ሽንኩርብ down. Lucas: Almost! It's ነጭ ሽንኩርት — with a 't' at the end, not a 'b'. Let's start with a quick review. ጎመን. That's cabbage. Luna: ጎመን. Cabbage. Got it. Lucas: And ነጭ ሽንኩርት. Garlic. Notice the two parts: ነጭ means 'white', and ሽንኩርት means 'onion', so literally 'white onion'. Luna: Oh, that makes sense! ነጭ ሽንኩርት. Garlic. Let me try: ነጭ ሽንኩርት. Lucas: Perfect. Now let's use them in sentences. If you want to buy cabbage at the market, you say: ጎመን እፈልጋለሁ. I want cabbage. Luna: ጎመን እፈልጋለሁ. That's 'I want cabbage.' Easy. Lucas: And for garlic, we often use the verb ያስፈልገኛል, which means 'I need'. So: ነጭ ሽንኩርት ያስፈልገኛል. I need garlic. Luna: ነጭ ሽንኩርት ያስፈልገኛል. That's a bit of a mouthful, but I'll practice. So ያስፈልገኛል is 'I need'? Lucas: Exactly. And if you want both, you can say: ጎመን እና ነጭ ሽንኩርት. Cabbage and garlic. Luna: ጎመን እና ነጭ ሽንኩርት. I can imagine saying that at the market. Let's roleplay! You're the vendor, I'm the customer. Lucas: Okay. Hello, what do you need? Luna: ጎመን እና ነጭ ሽንኩርት ያስፈልገኛል. Lucas: Oh, almost. Remember, for 'I need' we use ያስፈልገኛል, so it's ነጭ ሽንኩርት ያስፈልገኛል. But you can also say እፈልጋለሁ for both. Listeners, both work. So, you could say ጎመን እና ነጭ ሽንኩርት እፈልጋለሁ. Luna: Okay, let me try that: ጎመን እና ነጭ ሽንኩርት እፈልጋለሁ. Lucas: Yes! That's perfect. Now, let's practice a bit more. Repeat after me: ጎመን. Luna: ጎመን. Lucas: ነጭ ሽንኩርት. Luna: ነጭ ሽንኩርት. Lucas: ጎመን እፈልጋለሁ. Luna: ጎመን እፈልጋለሁ. Lucas: ነጭ ሽንኩርት ያስፈልገኛል. Luna: ነጭ ሽንኩርት ያስፈልገኛል. Lucas: Great. Lucas: I need garlic. Luna: ነጭ ሽንኩርት ያስፈልገኛል. Lucas: Excellent. You've got it. Keep practicing these, and soon you'll be able to shop for vegetables in Amharic with confidence. Luna: Thanks, Lucas.
