- 3:43SPEAKER_01: Welcome to the show, Anne.
- 3:44SPEAKER_01: I'm so happy to be hosting you.
- 3:46SPEAKER_01: I'm so excited to learn about the brand.
- 3:48SPEAKER_01: Um, so welcome.
- 3:50SPEAKER_02: Thank you.
- 3:50SPEAKER_02: Thank you so much for a lovely introduction.
- 3:53SPEAKER_02: And uh yes, I'm excited to be here.
- 3:55SPEAKER_02: My name is Anne Nguyen Oliver.
- 3:57SPEAKER_02: I'm the founder and CEO of House of M Beauty, and we make saffron infused uh skincare products um that utilize the highest quality of saffron.
- 4:09SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah, that's that's the thing I really want to talk to you about was this idea of using saffron in skincare.
- 4:16SPEAKER_01: I think it's absolutely brilliant.
- 4:17SPEAKER_01: I know that saffron has so many benefits when it comes to health.
- 4:22SPEAKER_01: And um, it's been such a coveted ingredient, you know, especially like being from the East myself, you know, I know that it's been something that, you know, people love to put into foods, they love to put into their kind of daily routine.
- 4:34SPEAKER_01: So I'd love to um actually know more about that.
- 4:37SPEAKER_01: But first I want to know how did you get into beauty and skincare?
- 4:41SPEAKER_01: Like what was the journey like?
- 4:43SPEAKER_02: Um, I would say uh started around 12 years old when my family uh in Vietnam got internet for the first time.
- 4:52SPEAKER_02: And that was when I discovered the world of YouTube.
- 4:56SPEAKER_02: And uh like any teenagers, I started to, you know, dig in and uh stumble across Michelle Farn.
- 5:04SPEAKER_02: And she was the first, you know, beauty YouTuber that I found that has the last name I recognize.
- 5:11SPEAKER_02: Um, and I connect with her deeply.
- 5:14SPEAKER_02: And since then, I fall in love with the world of beauty.
- 5:18SPEAKER_02: I collect skincare and makeup products, and I would follow trends.
- 5:23SPEAKER_02: I basically, you know, love the industry so much that I follow the trends and what's new out there.
- 5:30SPEAKER_02: So yeah, that is how the the love for beauty starts.
- 5:35SPEAKER_01: That's awesome.
- 5:35SPEAKER_01: I love that.
- 5:36SPEAKER_01: It's very organic, and you know, I think the best brands come out of that, you know.
- 5:40SPEAKER_01: It's like uh those of us who just love playing around with beauty and we grow up with it, and yes, you know, one day you just realize, hey, I'm gonna do it myself, and that's awesome.
- 5:50SPEAKER_01: I love that.
- 5:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah, um, uh I won't lie though, and your one of your products, I mean, all of your products are phenomenal, but I absolutely am obsessed with your serum because I look at it all the time.
- 6:04SPEAKER_01: Thank you.
- 6:06SPEAKER_01: All the time, it's so beautiful, and everyone listening, it's got little um uh pieces of saffron on the bottom of it, you know, it's an oil and it's beautiful, it's very light and it soaks right in, but the saffron is just so gorgeous.
- 6:19SPEAKER_01: It's this, you know, it's just deep red.
- 6:21SPEAKER_01: And so I want you, I want to learn from you in terms of like, you know, where was like like when you knew that you wanted to create something with saffron, like how did you go about it like in your own mind in terms of formulation?
- 6:33SPEAKER_01: Like, did you want, did you know that you wanted it to be like infused or like how well how's that journey?
- 6:38SPEAKER_01: Just tell us more about that.
- 6:40SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 6:40SPEAKER_02: So let's go back to when I first discovered saffron, and that was an accident.
- 6:46SPEAKER_02: So uh when about five years ago, after I give birth to my son, I went through uh a postpartum depression and I was struggling for the first three months until I went to see a doctor, and he suggested to put me on medication.
- 7:04SPEAKER_02: And during that time, I was still breastfeeding my son, and I didn't want to give that up.
- 7:09SPEAKER_02: So I asked him, can he suggest me, like, you know, any natural alternative to help me to just feel better, sleep a little bit better?
- 7:20SPEAKER_02: And he said to drink saffron as a tea before I go to bed at night, and to make sure that you find the uh medicinal quality of saffron, not the one for cooking.
- 7:33SPEAKER_02: And growing up in the Vietnamese culture, we don't cook with saffron.
- 7:37SPEAKER_02: I didn't know what saffron was, um, and I didn't even know that there was such like different qualities in saffron.
- 7:44SPEAKER_02: So when I came home and I do some research, yes, there is such a thing as a medicinal quality of saffron, and that one is not for cooking because it will put you to sleep.
- 7:58SPEAKER_02: And you only need about seven to ten red strands in a hot cup of water, let it infuse, and drink it 30 minutes before bed.
- 8:09SPEAKER_02: And I guarantee you'll have the best sleep of your life, and your anxiety will ease, and that's what helped me.
- 8:18SPEAKER_02: And uh throughout my research, I found out that saffron has a lot of skincare benefits to it, and not a lot of people in the beauty world even know about it.
- 8:30SPEAKER_02: Saffron is actually one of a few ingredients that can brighten your skin while help calm down inflammation and redness.
- 8:39SPEAKER_02: So that was my fascination with saffron and my love for saffron.
- 8:46SPEAKER_02: It literally saved me.
- 8:48SPEAKER_02: And yeah, that that was how I I discovered the ingredient.
- 8:52SPEAKER_02: And when I set out on this journey to make this skincare product line, I wanted to use the highest quality of saffron, the quality that helped me, and I want to introduce that to the world.
- 9:08SPEAKER_01: I love that.
- 9:09SPEAKER_01: I really love that.
- 9:10SPEAKER_01: And I think that, you know, having had this um, you know, journey with it, I think that makes it so interesting for me as a consumer because, you know, like I said, saffron has been this ingredient that's like, you know, it's been coveted by even the, you know, the highest, you know, most notable chefs in the world, you know, it's been used so often in like foods and like preparing, you know, for example, like ingestible things, right?
- 9:38SPEAKER_01: But like to have it in skincare is just such a unique concept.
- 9:41SPEAKER_01: And uh I absolutely believe in uh what you're doing because, you know, like I said, there's plenty of studies out there that actually explore the role of saffron and um, you know, when it comes to our skin, I always say this is one of the organs we know least about, you know, it's almost like the human brain, and we have so many receptors on our skin.
- 10:00SPEAKER_01: So, you know, if there's like there's so many herbs and naturally occurring things in our environment that could be incorporated in skin health and they will help us, you know what I mean?
- 10:10SPEAKER_01: So, like it's it's really cool to me that you did this.
- 10:12SPEAKER_01: This is very, very cool.
- 10:14SPEAKER_02: Thank you so much.
- 10:15SPEAKER_02: It means a lot to me coming from you, yeah.
- 10:18SPEAKER_01: No, absolutely.
- 10:18SPEAKER_01: No, I I mean honestly, it's it's a wonderful line.
- 10:21SPEAKER_01: And so I want to I want to actually uh ask you about like you know, what led you to creating the serum as like an oil-based because it's really beautiful.
- 10:31SPEAKER_01: And then I know the moisturizer for everyone listening, by the way, it literally feels like silk.
- 10:37SPEAKER_01: The moisturizer is so lovely, and so I would love for you to tell us about the formulation aspect in terms of like the few products that you did launch and why you launched specifically with those.
- 10:48SPEAKER_02: Yes, so let's start with the serum first.
- 10:51SPEAKER_02: Um, I created that for myself.
- 10:54SPEAKER_02: Well, after I gave birth, my melasma was acting up.
- 10:58SPEAKER_02: I have a lot of dark spot on my cheeks, and my skin was very sensitive.
- 11:02SPEAKER_02: Um, and as a mom, I want something that is, you know, one and done basically.
- 11:08SPEAKER_02: And I wanted to um also highlighting saffron and use the uh correct uh quality of saffron.
- 11:16SPEAKER_02: So every single uh batch, we supply our manufacturer with the raw material of saffron, and we actually test every single batch to make sure that the level of saffronol, crocin, pubercrosin inside the saffron is matching up with the international standard organization.
- 11:36SPEAKER_02: Um, and I also wanted to, you know, make the the serum as an oil because uh my skin back then um is very oily.
- 11:48SPEAKER_02: And um, after a few years of just trying to strip it down, I accidentally make it more oily.
- 11:55SPEAKER_02: And after a lot of research, I found out okay, there is such an oil for oily skin, and I wanted to balance it out as well as using a vitamin C derivatives that in an oil base to help absorb like a better absorption.
- 12:12SPEAKER_02: So I set out to to do that, and I I created this um beautiful like formula, which I love, love, love so much.
- 12:22SPEAKER_02: Um, and also the second product, the the cream, like you mentioned, it actually feels like silk, and that is our own base.
- 12:32SPEAKER_02: So we don't use it, it is a fresh base, so you wouldn't find another texture like this on the market.
- 12:39SPEAKER_02: It is very unique, and uh same thing, it's you know, help it helps to plump your skin, hydrating your skin.
- 12:48SPEAKER_02: And at night I just use the serum and the cream, and I'm good to go.
- 12:52SPEAKER_02: I I because as a mom, I don't have time to, you know, um layering a lot of products, and a lot of the time I I just go back to these two.
- 13:04SPEAKER_02: If when my skin is sensitive and over like reacting to new products that I test, I I went back to my original love.
- 13:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, no, I I get it.
- 13:16SPEAKER_01: And it's like, you know, I think that we all like for me, like when I think about skincare lines, I always wonder, like, you know, the for the founders, like what did you like what was the vision before you created it?
- 13:29SPEAKER_01: Because like, you know, like when I look at your line, like House of M, like, you know, immediately for everyone listening, like when you first try the line, you can feel the luxury and you can feel like how soothing it is, you know, and that's something that I think um it it comes from the vision, right, of the founder.
- 13:46SPEAKER_01: And so I wanted to like really kind of uh dive into like your your mind and figure out, you know, what were the what were the pillars of your vision?
- 13:54SPEAKER_01: Because, you know, the the line is it's very sophisticated, and that's the thing.
- 13:59SPEAKER_01: It's like, you know, you're introducing a brand new ingredient here into the skincare space, which I mean I don't see any other lines doing what you're doing, which is the saffron.
- 14:07SPEAKER_01: And then on top of it, it feels so luxurious and it feels so like non-heavy, you know, you can use it if you have acne-prone skin, you can use it if you have just normal skin and you want to maintain your skin health.
- 14:19SPEAKER_01: So, you know, it's it's true quality, you know, and that's something that I think is very, very hard to accomplish.
- 14:25SPEAKER_02: Thank you.
- 14:25SPEAKER_02: Thank you so, so much.
- 14:27SPEAKER_02: I I, you know, for me, all of those years of you know, in love with the industry, buying every single new launches and trying them out, as a consumer, I feel overwhelmed.
- 14:40SPEAKER_02: And as a consumer, I want to create something that is meaningful and thoughtful, that truly is filling the hole in the market and not, you know, uh just releasing something um that I don't love or I don't know that it's doing a purpose or is providing a solution.
- 15:01SPEAKER_02: So when I hear that from you, it's truly is an honor for me.
- 15:05SPEAKER_02: And um, we take our time on my end to create a new formula.
- 15:12SPEAKER_02: You know, our goal is to introduce what we have right now to as many people as possible.
- 15:18SPEAKER_02: Right, right.
- 15:18SPEAKER_01: No, and I think you're you're doing a really great job.
- 15:21SPEAKER_01: You know, I think that the line is definitely um for me, you know, it's on the radar, but I'm curious, um, have you thought about retail and like in terms of like accessibility, what are your goals like as a founder?
- 15:32SPEAKER_01: Because I usually I actually interviewed somebody earlier today that was she's uh like a guru um in the beauty space and she discusses, you know, um like you know, just entering retail and and uh what that's like for for smaller brands.
- 15:47SPEAKER_01: So what's your vision in terms of just the accessibility of House of M and how we can all get our hands on it?
- 15:54SPEAKER_02: Awesome.
- 15:54SPEAKER_02: Yes, that's a great question.
- 15:56SPEAKER_02: So for retails, we are actually in talks with a few buyers, um, and hopefully the goal is to get into one retailer by the end of this year.
- 16:05SPEAKER_02: Um, I cannot say who yet, but you know, that is uh one of our goals for 2022.
- 16:11SPEAKER_02: Um and even though we are still like very small compared to you know other large big brands out there, when I first started, I started within our Vietnamese community.
- 16:22SPEAKER_02: And thanks to my community, we'd be able to grow six times compared to where we started.
- 16:30SPEAKER_02: So, in terms of capitals and how to fund that, um, you know, we're in a really good standing place right now at the moment because of you know the love and support from our community.
- 16:42SPEAKER_02: So I feel like this is the the time that House of M is ready to uh take on retailers and to be introduced to many, many more customers.
- 16:51SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 16:52SPEAKER_01: No, it's it's I think retail is a really like great like you know uh step for House of M because I know that you know, in terms of shopping, you know, we all like that tactile feeling.
- 17:03SPEAKER_01: We all want to feel what we're doing.
- 17:04SPEAKER_01: And I think your line, you know, honestly is something that it's like you have to feel it from you're just telling people they're like moisturizer.
- 17:15SPEAKER_01: Like when I first felt the moisturizer, I was like, oh, this is amazing.
- 17:18SPEAKER_01: Like it's such a it's so silky, it's so smooth, it just glides over your skin.
- 17:23SPEAKER_01: And you know, I know we live in a world now where everyone's like multitasking, we all want like different products.
- 17:29SPEAKER_01: Um, we all want like one product, right?
- 17:31SPEAKER_01: That does so many things.
- 17:32SPEAKER_01: Like, you know, for someone who wears very minimal makeup, for me, it's very important that like, for example, like my moisturizer is something that I can kind of use, like double up as a primer.
- 17:42SPEAKER_01: And so, like, you know, for me, like your moisturizer is really great because it doesn't leave my skin like, I don't know, like you know what I mean?
- 17:50SPEAKER_01: Like when it's like it's porous, like moisturizers sink in and they leave your skin like sticky.
- 17:55SPEAKER_01: Like it doesn't do that, you know.
- 17:58SPEAKER_01: So like I think it that's really, really good because we want it to be something that is multi-use, you know, and it can be used with our makeup products.
- 18:08SPEAKER_01: And I think beauty, like beauty as an industry, in my opinion, is kind of headed down that road, you know.
- 18:13SPEAKER_01: People talk a lot about skincare, and we talk a lot about like what's the future of the beauty business and the future of the skincare business.
- 18:20SPEAKER_01: But I think the real future is creating products that are friendly, you know, to all sides of beauty, right?
- 18:28SPEAKER_02: Yes, and I I totally agree with that.
- 18:30SPEAKER_02: I feel like the past couple of years we went through a craze of like the highest of active ingredients, and now we're dialing back, you know.
- 18:38SPEAKER_02: And I I love to see that.
- 18:40SPEAKER_02: I love to see the industry as a whole um prioritize skin health, prioritize our skin barrier, and um just take it slow um and not um chase after a high percentage ingredient anymore.
- 18:55SPEAKER_02: Um, so yes, like that is where Haz of M comes in.
- 18:58SPEAKER_02: Like all of our products are very skin barrier friendly, and uh saffron, like I mentioned before, is very high in antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial properties.
- 19:09SPEAKER_02: So it is a perfect ingredient to help soothe, calm, nourish your skin barriers while still provide, you know, um, the the brightening and the anti-aging effects.
- 19:24SPEAKER_01: I love that.
- 19:25SPEAKER_01: I really love that.
- 19:26SPEAKER_01: And you know, the brightening effect portion, I think it's it's time for us to explore new uh avenues because I know that vitamin C is like the hallmark, you know, for brightening.
- 19:37SPEAKER_01: And I'm like, you know, I think vitamin C it's interesting you you mentioned brightening.
- 19:42SPEAKER_01: That's why I'm I'm saying that because you know, um, in terms of like people saying, Oh, I use vitamin C products because of brightening, I'm like, well, you know, there's a lot of other products that can do that because you know, like vitamin C is a great antioxidant, it's a really great antioxidant, but like that's not the only thing that's gonna brighten your skin.
- 20:01SPEAKER_01: There's a lot more stuff out there, yeah.
- 20:03SPEAKER_02: Exactly.
- 20:04SPEAKER_02: And a lot of people are um, you know, allergic to al ascorbic acid too.
- 20:10SPEAKER_02: So there's a lot of skin out there that cannot handle um vitamin C, like myself.
- 20:16SPEAKER_02: I, you know, I cannot handle high percentage vitamin C L ascorbic acid.
- 20:20SPEAKER_02: And uh saffron is also an antioxidant, and saffron is also a brightening agent.
- 20:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah, saffron is definitely like um the antioxidants.
- 20:30SPEAKER_01: I've read about the the potential of saffron with that definitely in the brightening.
- 20:35SPEAKER_01: Um, I don't know.
- 20:36SPEAKER_01: I mean, I personally believe that saffron is one of those hero ingredients that we have yet to like really tap into because you know, growing up, like I said, I grew up in an Indian household, and my mother would always tell us, like, you know, saffron is one of those um spices, you know, that it does so much for your body, you know, it's like really good for your immune system, it's really good for like everything.
- 20:59SPEAKER_01: And so I can definitely see that, you know, I can definitely see like I feel like you're ahead of the game, uh, you know, and I feel like people are gonna catch up and they're gonna be like, wait a minute, saffron is the new vitamin C.
- 21:11SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 21:12SPEAKER_02: I I love that.
- 21:13SPEAKER_02: I love to hear that.
- 21:14SPEAKER_02: And I'm so passionate about this ingredient that I can talk all day long and share my knowledge with as many people as possible, you know, the more, the merrier.
- 21:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, I'm I'm really, really excited that you have come out with this line.
- 21:27SPEAKER_01: It's absolutely gorgeous.
- 21:28SPEAKER_01: And I really love it.
- 21:30SPEAKER_01: I think it's a really great option, like I said, for everyone listening, you know, if you're just looking for a really cool line and you're sick of like lines that are just packed with unnecessary actives and you know, you know, just all that fluff.
- 21:43SPEAKER_01: Like just and you want something that works and is it's simple, but it's luxury and it feels wonderful.
