Transcript
- 0:00SPEAKER_03: It's so hard for me to speak quietly.
- 0:02SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 0:03SPEAKER_03: You versus everybody.
- 0:06SPEAKER_03: You versus everybody.
- 0:09SPEAKER_03: Hey, it's Moe.
- 0:11SPEAKER_03: And welcome to You versus Everybody.
- 0:13SPEAKER_03: I waited until the last minute to record this, and so everyone I live with is currently here a wall over and it's freaking me out and I don't want them to hear me record this.
- 0:22SPEAKER_03: So sorry, you're getting quiet, Moe, today, okay?
- 0:25SPEAKER_03: This is a show where everything starts with a prompt and ends in a story.
- 0:28SPEAKER_03: So today is a you versus episode.
- 0:31SPEAKER_03: Last episode, I made a new rule that we'd pull out a you versus episode, which is our competition episodes, whenever one of our prompts get four responses.
- 0:40SPEAKER_03: Well, we kind of have four responses today, and I'm so excited.
- 0:45SPEAKER_03: Four people took the same opening and wrote what happens next.
- 0:49SPEAKER_03: We've brought their endings to life with voice actors and music.
- 0:52SPEAKER_03: You get to listen and you get to vote for your favorite.
- 0:55SPEAKER_03: Fun fact: a lot of today's endings came from TikTok comments.
- 1:00SPEAKER_03: Those comments were actually the inspiration for this whole podcast.
- 1:03SPEAKER_03: So I wanted to air them out here, give them some flair, and let you vote on your favorite regardless of length.
- 1:11SPEAKER_03: Now, before we move on to today's episode, I have very cool news for you, which is unfortunate that you're getting quiet, Moe, right now, because I want to yell this from the rooftops.
- 1:21SPEAKER_03: We finally received some votes for episode two.
- 1:24SPEAKER_03: Yes, I did say it was a practice round, but let's give credit where it's due.
- 1:29SPEAKER_03: Drum roll, please.
- 1:31SPEAKER_03: And the winner of you versus the rear view mirror is Matt S!
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: Matt S.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: It's Matt S.
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: Matt S.
- 1:48SPEAKER_03: Congratulations, Matt S.
- 1:50SPEAKER_03: I'll post your story on social media and you get to tell everyone that you're a literary wizard.
- 1:54SPEAKER_03: I hope to hear more of your writing.
- 1:56SPEAKER_03: Yay! Okay, back to today's episode.
- 1:59SPEAKER_03: Quick heads up.
- 2:00SPEAKER_03: This prompt leans spooky and dark.
- 2:03SPEAKER_03: So today's prompt responses touch on death and setting shit on fire.
- 2:07SPEAKER_03: If that's not your thing, sit this one out and come hang out next week.
- 2:10SPEAKER_03: Okay, today's prompt is called The Attic.
- 2:14SPEAKER_03: And I feel like we've been talking about this since the trailer of this show.
- 2:18SPEAKER_03: So I'm really excited to finally put this one out there.
- 2:20SPEAKER_03: And thank you to Bemo from Vermont who voiced this prompt like a month ago, and we've been able to continue using his voice memo.
- 2:28unknown: Fuck it.
- 2:29SPEAKER_01: It's the third night in a row that I've heard this weird sound.
- 2:31SPEAKER_01: I think it's coming from the attic.
- 2:33SPEAKER_01: The attic I haven't stepped in for two years, three months, and five days.
- 2:38SPEAKER_03: This first ending is brought to you by At Frying Pan from TikTok.
- 2:44unknown: Fuck.
- 2:46SPEAKER_02: It's the third night in a row I've heard this weird sound.
- 2:49SPEAKER_02: I think it's coming from the attic.
- 2:50SPEAKER_02: The attic I haven't stepped in for two years, three months, and five days.
- 2:55SPEAKER_02: The light is on, the door is warm, but I don't open it.
- 3:00SPEAKER_02: After all, if they knew I was down here, they would have to call the police.
- 3:08SPEAKER_03: Oh my god, I absolutely loved this comment.
- 3:10SPEAKER_03: I know these are like small hooks, but I was just surprised at how much I wanted more.
- 3:17SPEAKER_03: So bravo to these hooks.
- 3:19SPEAKER_03: Okay, here's another hook.
- 3:21SPEAKER_03: Up next, at spice underscore bloodstains from TikTok.
- 3:30SPEAKER_02: Fuck.
- 3:32SPEAKER_02: Third night in a row that I've heard this weird sound.
- 3:34SPEAKER_02: I think it's coming from the attic.
- 3:37SPEAKER_02: The attic I haven't stepped in for two years, three months, and five days.
- 3:41SPEAKER_02: That might sound like a very suspicious number, but I have a good reason to remember it.
- 3:46SPEAKER_02: It was the day I died after all.
- 3:54SPEAKER_03: The intent of this maybe was darker than expected, but for some reason, when the voice actor sent me his reading, I decided to take it a totally different way.
- 4:03SPEAKER_03: This sounds like a 90s sitcom about a ghost, and I really want to watch it because who wouldn't love a 90s sitcom about a ghost?
- 4:13SPEAKER_03: Our third prompt response comes from at unwilling underscore citizen underscore of underscore the underscore US from TikTok.
- 4:24SPEAKER_02: Fuck.
- 4:25SPEAKER_02: It's the third night in a row I've heard this weird sound.
- 4:28SPEAKER_02: I think it's coming from the attic.
- 4:30SPEAKER_02: The attic I haven't stepped in for two years, three months, and five days.
- 4:35SPEAKER_00: Come back to me, darling.
- 4:38SPEAKER_02: I catch myself grasping the key to that wretched door and have to remind myself that it isn't her.
- 4:45SPEAKER_02: Not anymore.
- 5:04SPEAKER_03: And I was super excited to have a little mini collaboration between our voice actors on this one, so thanks, y'all.
- 5:10SPEAKER_03: Our fourth and final ending comes from Madra underscore Magwai.
- 5:16SPEAKER_03: I hope I'm saying that right.
- 5:17SPEAKER_03: Here we go.
- 5:25SPEAKER_00: I only count to try to create space between myself and what happened.
- 5:31SPEAKER_00: Every time I let my guard down, I'm stricken with the memory so strongly it might as well have happened just a second ago.
- 5:38SPEAKER_00: Again.
- 5:40SPEAKER_00: It's impossible to spend my energy or attention anywhere else.
- 5:44SPEAKER_00: Again.
- 5:46SPEAKER_00: I'm only counting as an anchor point.
- 5:49SPEAKER_00: I'd tell you the minutes, but then I'd lose track.
- 5:53SPEAKER_00: And again.
- 5:56SPEAKER_00: The noise settled for a while.
- 5:58SPEAKER_00: Long enough that I created the false hope.
- 6:02SPEAKER_00: Again.
- 6:03SPEAKER_00: Maybe I could stay here.
- 6:05SPEAKER_00: Again.
- 6:06SPEAKER_00: What a fool.
- 6:08SPEAKER_00: Again, I've been.
- 6:10SPEAKER_00: The tempo and intensity increase, and any shreds of focus are gone.
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: It's here.
- 6:17SPEAKER_00: It's all around me.
- 6:19SPEAKER_00: My stomach is flipping and I'm choking on the breath stopped in my throat.
- 6:25SPEAKER_00: I feel as if I were in the attic now, as the kitchen lights glare into my eyes.
- 6:31SPEAKER_00: When I stepped into the attic two years ago, three months, five days, seven minutes, and eight.
- 6:37SPEAKER_00: No, nine seconds ago.
- 6:40SPEAKER_00: I was changed.
- 6:42SPEAKER_00: I feel now like I did then.
- 6:45SPEAKER_00: No more denial then.
- 6:48SPEAKER_00: Chair legs scraping along the same old scratches in linoleum run vibrations violently up my spine, lifting every hair along my body as it traveled to my crown.
- 7:01SPEAKER_00: What a fool.
- 7:03SPEAKER_00: Again, I am.
- 7:06SPEAKER_00: As I turn the knobs on the stove, I almost feel a chuckle break through my heavy lips.
- 7:12SPEAKER_00: Pasted together grimly.
- 7:15SPEAKER_00: As I pass through the kitchen door, I grab a lighter from the catch tray on the other side.
- 7:21SPEAKER_00: It scrapes lightly along the stairs.
- 7:24SPEAKER_00: My accompaniment monotone.
- 7:28SPEAKER_00: Unwavering.
- 7:31SPEAKER_00: I'm done counting.
- 7:43SPEAKER_03: That was a really cool motif, the counting motif that came like as inspiration from the prompt.
- 7:48SPEAKER_03: I'm so excited to hear what prospective writers do with these prompts.
- 7:54SPEAKER_03: So thank you all for submitting a response.
- 7:58SPEAKER_03: That's all four of our endings.
- 8:00SPEAKER_03: Go to you versus everybody.com and vote for your favorite by Sunday night, October 18th.
- 8:06SPEAKER_03: That's y-o-u-v-severybody.com.
- 8:09SPEAKER_03: And if you want to tell me why or react to a story or add on to a story, call the hotline at 802-308-3131.
- 8:19SPEAKER_03: I'll share the voting results next week.
- 8:21SPEAKER_03: And by the way, next episode, we'll zoom back out to my awkward journey as a sound designer, attempting to be a charismatic journalist, and finding stories out in the wild as we get this podcast off the ground and wait for our prompts to get more action.
- 8:35SPEAKER_03: I will be bringing you, my microphone, a dinky plastic table, and an empty chair to Lake Champlain to find more stories for the podcast.
- 8:45SPEAKER_03: So wish me luck.
- 8:47SPEAKER_03: Today's stories were narrated by Dustin Foos, who's working on getting a portfolio together, and Faye, who you can follow on Instagram at pure.fee, and Linktree slash pure Faye.
- 9:01SPEAKER_03: I think you'll definitely be hearing more from these two voice actors.
- 9:04SPEAKER_03: And thank you, thank you, thank you, Dustin and Faye, for continuing to give me your wonderful voices in all of my crazy side projects.
- 9:13SPEAKER_03: Episode production and sound design by Morgan Foos.
- 9:16SPEAKER_03: If you want to participate, respond to some prompts, be a voice actor for the show, or want to reach out for any reason, go to YOU VS Everybody dot com.
- 9:29SPEAKER_03: Okay, bye-bye.
