- 0:12I'm Drew and I'll be your guide to the night sky for the week starting February 2nd through
- 0:17the 8th.
- 0:19This week is special as it marks the one year anniversary of the Star Trails podcast.
- 0:25Later in the show I'll talk about why I started the show and what the future may hold.
- 0:30Plus we'll explore Carl Sagan's concept of a cosmic calendar.
- 0:35We're going to compress the entire timeline of the universe into a span of a year to give
- 0:41us a framework for understanding the vast scale of the universe.
- 0:46We'll start with what you can see from your backyard this week so grab a comfortable spot
- 0:51under the night sky and let's get started.
- 0:55This week the moon will be in a waxing phase, gradually increasing in brightness each night.
- 1:01On February 2nd and 3rd the waxing crescent moon will be visible in the early evening,
- 1:07setting a few hours after the sun.
- 1:10This is a great time to observe the moon's delicate crescent shape as well as the earth
- 1:14shine effect where sunlight reflects off earth and faintly illuminates the darkened portion
- 1:21of the lunar surface.
- 1:23On February 5th the moon will reach its first quarter phase, appearing as a perfect half-illuminated
- 1:30disc in the evening sky.
- 1:32This phase offers excellent contrast along the terminator, the dividing line between
- 1:38light and shadow, where craters and mountain ranges stand out sharply.
- 1:43By the end of the week the moon's waxing gibbous phase will dominate the night sky.
- 1:48It will be bright and high in the sky for most of the night, making deep sky observations
- 1:54more challenging but providing clearer views of the moon's craters and maria through a
- 1:59telescope.
- 2:00Venus remains a dazzling beacon in the western sky after sunset.
- 2:05As one of the brightest objects in the sky it's impossible to miss, shining like a bright
- 2:10diamond just above the horizon.
- 2:14Mars is still making its way through Gemini.
- 2:17It reached opposition a few weeks back so it's still big and bright in the sky.
- 2:22A telescope may reveal surface details and polar ice caps under good conditions.
- 2:29Jupiter dominates the sky from up high.
- 2:32It's nearly directly overhead after dusk and visible until about 2am.
- 2:37Even a modest telescope will reveal its cloud bands and its four largest moons, which change
- 2:43position from night to night.
- 2:45Saturn is also visible though lower in the western sky after sunset.
- 2:50The ringed planet is slowly sinking toward the horizon so this will be one of the last
- 2:55good months to observe it before it disappears from view for a while.
- 3:00Through a telescope Saturn's rings and its largest moon, Titan, make for a stunning sight.
- 3:07There are also a few interesting alignments to watch for this week.
- 3:11On February 5th, the first quarter moon will appear close to Jupiter and Aldebaran, the
- 3:17bright orange star marking the eye of Taurus.
- 3:21The moon will also pass near the Pleiades star cluster, offering a beautiful celestial
- 3:27grouping visible to the naked eye or through binoculars.
- 3:31On February 6th, the moon will form a striking line with Jupiter and Aldebaran.
- 3:37Look high in the sky to observe both events.
- 3:45This week we turn our attention to two constellations, Auriga, the charioteer, and the lynx, an often
- 3:52overlooked but rewarding constellation for deep sky observers.
- 3:58First let's start with Auriga, which is almost directly overhead and easy to spot thanks
- 4:03to its brightest star, Capella.
- 4:07Auriga is the sixth brightest star in the night sky and has a beautiful golden hue.
- 4:12But beyond this prominent beacon, Auriga is home to a trio of remarkable open star clusters
- 4:19that make for excellent binocular and telescope targets.
- 4:23M36 is sometimes called a miniature version of the Pleiades.
- 4:28This young cluster contains hot blue-white stars that sparkle against the blackness of
- 4:33space.
- 4:34M37 is the richest and brightest of Auriga's open clusters.
- 4:40It stands out with its densely packed core and a single reddish giant star near its center,
- 4:46adding a splash of color to the grouping.
- 4:49Finally, M38 has an intriguing X or starfish shape when viewed through a telescope, making
- 4:57it a rewarding target for deep sky observers.
- 5:01Now for something a little more challenging, we turn to lynx, a faint constellation that
- 5:06stretches between Auriga and Ursa Major.
- 5:11While it doesn't have any particularly bright stars, it holds one of the most intriguing
- 5:15deep sky objects in the sky, NGC 2419, also known as the intergalactic wanderer.
- 5:25This globular cluster is incredibly distant, about 300,000 light-years away, making it one
- 5:32of the most remote star clusters associated with the Milky Way.
- 5:37Unlike most globular clusters, which orbit relatively close to the galactic center, this
- 5:42one takes such a long time to complete its orbit that some astronomers originally believed
- 5:48it might not belong to the Milky Way at all.
- 5:51Through a medium to large telescope, it appears as a faint, compact sphere of stars.
- 5:58As always, try to observe from a dark sky location for the best views and let your eyes
- 6:03adjust for at least 15 minutes to catch the faintest details these celestial wonders have
- 6:09to offer.
- 6:14I'd like to take a moment to thank the listeners of Star Trails, because this week marks the
- 6:23one-year anniversary of the podcast.
- 6:27I'm not sure how time flew by that quickly.
- 6:30It's sort of like orbiting a black hole and returning to Earth to find years have passed
- 6:35in the blink of an eye.
- 6:37But here we are, entering the show's second year.
- 6:41When I began this endeavor, I decided that I would produce it for a year and at the end
- 6:46of that period, see how things were going.
- 6:49If there was growth, I'd continue on.
- 6:51Strangely, we've picked up listeners from across the globe and growth has been slow
- 6:57but steady.
- 6:58I'm about halfway to a milestone goal of 1,000 listeners per month, so I plan to keep
- 7:05plugging away in hopes of reaching that benchmark one day.
- 7:09I'd like to take a moment to discuss the show's experimental origins, because the early weeks
- 7:15of the show were a little, well, strange.
- 7:18I'd also like to highlight a few of the things I think the show did well over the last year,
- 7:23which was just an incredible year for amateur astronomers from a surprise solar storm and
- 7:29auroras, a dramatic solar eclipse, to a crazy comet.
- 7:35Next to these events, we had no shortage of good content over the last year.
- 7:40Star Trails was born in January 2024, one evening while I was out on one of my daily
- 7:47walks.
- 7:48I simply looked up at the field of stars above and wondered what was visible that night.
- 7:53That triggered a memory from decades earlier, when I would stay up late on Saturday nights
- 7:58to catch Jack Horkheimer's Star Hustler segment on PBS.
- 8:04Maybe some of you remember it.
- 8:33Greetings, Greetings, fellow stargazers, and although I don't want to date myself, I wonder
- 8:38how many of you out there remember along with me.
- 8:41As a kid growing up in the 80s, there was no internet, no astronomy apps, and no real
- 8:46content on TV aimed at aspiring astronomers, except Star Hustler, which was a brief program,
- 8:55five minutes or so, that ran at the end of the broadcast day.
- 9:00On the show, Jack would preview the night sky for the week ahead, offering up basic
- 9:05astronomy topics and news of special events, such as Haley's Comet.
- 9:11Star Trails shamelessly copies this format.
- 9:15So after the burst of inspiration from my late night walk, I decided that I wanted to
- 9:20create an experimental micro podcast about astronomy that was produced automatically
- 9:27via a series of shell scripts, programming APIs, large language models, and even AI voice
- 9:34generation.
- 9:36My goal was to be hands off in the process, and if I was the only person listening, then
- 9:42hey, at least I would know what was in the night sky that week.
- 9:46As a podcast editor and overall computer geek, I knew this was possible.
- 9:52Some folks in the podcast world were already experimenting with workflows to accomplish
- 9:57fully automated podcasts.
- 10:00However, I ran into issues immediately with this approach.
- 10:04Above all, every AI model has issues with accuracy.
- 10:09Simply asking chat GPT for next week's moon phases and visible planets almost always produces
- 10:17a response that is incorrect.
- 10:19No matter how authoritative and confident its response sounds, it's generally wrong.
- 10:25Even the new hot AI deep seek fails at this.
- 10:30With that being said, with rigorous prompting, you can achieve success, but it would get
- 10:35these basic facts wrong so often that I felt compelled to write a Python script to pull
- 10:42the correct moon phase and visible planet information.
- 10:46By the way, if anyone is interested in this, look into the library called Python Ephemeras,
- 10:52which enables you to code up astronomical predictions with relative ease.
- 10:57Anyway, I'd hope to then feed the output of my Python program into an AI to write my podcast
- 11:04script.
- 11:05The results, while now accurate, felt bland and uninspired.
- 11:10So I started writing the episodes myself.
- 11:14Around this time, AI generated voices were making some waves in the podcast space.
- 11:20I'd found some voices that sounded remarkable, and I made the decision to use the AI voice
- 11:26service 11 Labs to read my scripts.
- 11:31Early tests shared with friends seemed successful, and no one seemingly realized they were listening
- 11:36to a computer generated voice.
- 11:39I produced a handful of episodes using this voice, so if you go back and listen to the
- 11:44earliest episodes, you'll hear a very different sounding drew.
- 11:49Welcome to another episode of Star Trails.
- 11:52I'm your host, Drew, and together we'll embark on a celestial journey through the night sky
- 11:58for the week, starting February 4th, 2024.
- 12:02Initially, I wanted to use a generated voice simply for practical reasons.
- 12:08One, speed of production, and two, audio quality.
- 12:11I've never been happy with the sound of my home studio, and I'm not a fan of my own
- 12:17voice either.
- 12:19Using a service that can read a script and not make mistakes would certainly boost productivity.
- 12:25Plus, with some programming, I could get closer to the dream of automating aspects of the
- 12:29show's production.
- 12:31Again, my plans went awry.
- 12:34The AI voice struggled with certain pronunciations, particularly star names.
- 12:40I can't recall how many times I had to experiment just to get the AI to say playities, Virgo,
- 12:46or Aldebaran properly.
- 12:49So this was neither convenient nor fast.
- 12:52Plus, I thought about my own podcast listening habits and realized that I personally wouldn't
- 12:59want to listen to a podcast that was narrated by a machine.
- 13:04So I decided to narrate the show myself.
- 13:07Just recording in a walk-in closet at home, and since late last year, I've been recording
- 13:13in a podcast studio downtown, which is a free service provided by our library.
- 13:21Initial episodes were very short, as I only intended this to be a five-minute experience,
- 13:26like the original Star Hustler series.
- 13:29The problem I ran into was repetition.
- 13:32The same planets, constellations, deep sky objects, and so on would be mentioned repeatedly
- 13:38from week to week, so there needed to be additional information to keep the show fresh.
- 13:44I decided to add on a more general segment that deals with Astronomy 101 topics and other
- 13:50subjects of interest.
- 13:53In many cases, I think these segments are more interesting and informative than the
- 13:57weekly Sky report.
- 13:59So my experiment to create an automatic podcast about the night sky essentially failed before
- 14:06liftoff, but that's not a bad thing because I think we've landed in a good place, and
- 14:11that's a handcrafted show built around a passion for a hobby, not soulless algorithmic output.
- 14:20Plus an AI could never generate my favorite episode from last year.
- 14:25That was Episode 41, A Night at a Star Party.
- 14:30The idea of an audio essay covering my local club's seasonal star party was something I
- 14:35was eager to produce.
- 14:37I'd planned to cover the star party in spring of last year, but the event was canceled owing
- 14:42to weather conditions.
- 14:44I couldn't try again until our fall star party some months later, but in the end, I think
- 14:50it was worth the wait and the episode captured the camaraderie of the event in a unique way.
- 14:56I also receive good feedback from listeners when I speak about my personal experiences
- 15:01and observations.
- 15:03I tried to report on some of the amazing auroras last spring that lit up the skies down south.
- 15:10Also I went out and tried to photograph a few super moons and I spent a few nights chasing
- 15:14Comet C2023A3 Sushinshin Atlas, among others.
- 15:22Sometimes it's hard to make time to simply look up, but when the sky is clear, it's
- 15:27almost always worth it, and I do enjoy sharing my bumbling efforts with listeners.
- 15:34As we go forward into this second year of production, I'm trying to find ways to further
- 15:39diversify the content and subject matter.
- 15:42I've been considering a move into video for a while, but for now I think we'll remain
- 15:47audio only.
- 15:49To do video properly would require resources and time beyond my means at the moment, particularly
- 15:55in the art and animations that I'd need for each show.

- 16:17As we celebrate one year of StarTrails, let's take a moment to zoom out, way out, and look
- 16:24at where we fit into the grand story of the cosmos.
- 16:29Even condensing the entire 13.8 billion year history of the universe into a single calendar
- 16:36year.
- 16:38This thought experiment is what Carl Sagan called the cosmic calendar, a way to help
- 16:44us grasp the staggering scale of time.
- 16:49In this model, the universe begins in a brilliant flash on January the 1st, the Big Bang.
- 16:55In an instant, space and time come into existence, expanding at an unimaginable rate.
- 17:02The first subatomic particles emerge, and within minutes, simple atoms like hydrogen and helium
- 17:08form.
- 17:09But for a long time, the universe is a dark, hot soup of particles.
- 17:16It isn't until late January that the first stars begin to shine, ending the cosmic dark
- 17:22ages.
- 17:23These stars burn hot and fast, living and dying in massive explosions that forge heavier
- 17:29elements like carbon, oxygen, iron, the building blocks of everything to come.
- 17:37As these early stars explode, their remnants gather into swirling collections of gas and
- 17:42dust, forming the first galaxies.
- 17:46By early March, our Milky Way galaxy is taking shape, a faint, developing spiral in a vast
- 17:52and growing cosmic ocean.
- 17:56Throughout March, April and May, galaxies are colliding and merging, forming immense clusters
- 18:02and superclusters.
- 18:04Black holes grow at their centers, shaping the evolution of entire galaxies.
- 18:09The chemistry of the universe is becoming richer, with heavier elements seeding future
- 18:14planets and, one day, life itself.
- 18:18By June, our galaxy is a dynamic place filled with young and ancient stars alike, but our
- 18:24sun, it doesn't exist yet.
- 18:28Many generations of stars have lived and died, creating the ingredients needed for planets
- 18:33like Earth.
- 18:34The stage is being set, but our solar system is still billions of years away.
- 18:40Then in early August, something remarkable happens.
- 18:44Our sun ignites.
- 18:46A vast cloud of gas and dust collapses under gravity, forming the familiar fiery sphere
- 18:52at the heart of our solar system.
- 18:55Around it, a swirling disk of leftover material begins clumping together, forming the first
- 19:00rough outlines of planets.
- 19:03By mid August, these young planetary bodies are colliding and reshaping themselves, forging
- 19:09the rocky worlds and gas giants we know today.
- 19:13Earth is still a molten, hostile landscape, bombarded constantly by asteroids and comets.
- 19:21Finally, on September the 6th, Earth itself is born.
- 19:26At this point, it's a seething volcanic world with no breathable atmosphere, no oceans,
- 19:32just a fiery, chaotic planet in the making.
- 19:36Over the next few days, the moon forms, likely from a massive collision between Earth and
- 19:41a Mars-sized object.
- 19:44This impact sets our planet spinning and tilts its axis, giving us the seasons we experience
- 19:50today.
- 19:52Just more than two weeks later, on September 21st, something extraordinary happens.
- 19:58Life appears.
- 19:59The first single-celled organisms emerge in the oceans, setting off a slow but profound
- 20:05chain of evolution.
- 20:07These microscopic life forms will dominate the planet for billions of years, gradually
- 20:13transforming Earth's atmosphere by producing oxygen.
- 20:17Yet, for all of October and November, life remains simple, just bacteria and other single-celled
- 20:25organisms.
- 20:26The planet itself undergoes dramatic changes, continents drift, volcanoes erupt, and ice
- 20:33ages come and go.
- 20:35But for now, there are no plants, no animals, no complex ecosystems, just tiny unseen life
- 20:42quietly reshaping the world.
- 20:45By mid-December, multicellular life emerges and simple sea creatures begin appearing in
- 20:51Earth's oceans.
- 20:53Some days later, the first fish evolved, followed by land plants.
- 20:57A few more days pass and amphibians crawl onto land.
- 21:02Reptiles evolve.
- 21:04Dinosaurs appear on December 26 and rule the planet for millions of years.
- 21:10Then on December 30, a giant asteroid strikes Earth, wiping out the dinosaurs.
- 21:17On the very last day of this theoretical cosmic calendar, human ancestors finally appear in
- 21:24the late afternoon.
- 21:26As the hours tick down, early humans learn to make tools, harness fire, and form civilizations.
- 21:34And then, in just the last 14 seconds before midnight, recorded history begins.
- 21:41Every empire, every discovery, every moment of art and science that defines our world
- 21:47today.
- 21:49Everything we've experienced from the Renaissance to the Space Age all happens in the last
- 21:54fraction of a second before the New Year.
- 21:58In this vast cosmic timeline, our existence as a species is barely a blink, but that blink
- 22:05represents something greater.
- 22:08We are the universe becoming aware of itself, gazing at the stars, asking questions, and
- 22:15celebrating the wonders of the cosmos.
- 22:18At the end of the day, that's what Star Trails is all about.
