- 0:12Imagine someone asking you to choose just one book to read
- 0:16for the next 7 years. No commentaries,
- 0:19no devotionals, no podcasts, just one book.
- 0:23Most of us would think that impossible. Yet, one of the greatest
- 0:27Bible teachers of the last century did exactly that, and the lessons
- 0:31he learned still challenge every follower of Christ today.
- 0:36Welcome to another edition of Traveler's Tales, brought to you by Enjoying
- 0:40the Journey. I'm your host, Greg Dowdy. Throughout history,
- 0:44God has often accomplished His greatest work through
- 0:47ordinary people who made one extraordinary decision. To take
- 0:52God and His Word seriously. G. Campbell Morgan was
- 0:55one of those people. His influence stretched across continents
- 0:59and generations, not because he discovered something new,
- 1:03but because he devoted himself to the timeless truth of
- 1:07Scripture. Born on December 9th,
- 1:101863, in Tetbury, England,
- 1:13Morgan showed an unusual love for Scripture an early
- 1:17age. At only 13 years old, he preached his
- 1:20first sermon. That youthful beginning marked the start of a lifetime
- 1:24devoted to proclaiming God's Word. Yet,
- 1:27his path to usefulness was not without disappointment. At 19,
- 1:32Morgan applied to become a Wesleyan preacher but failed
- 1:36his trial sermon. Many would have concluded that preaching simply
- 1:40wasn't God's call on their life. Morgan did the opposite.
- 1:44Rather than quitting, he devoted himself even more deeply
- 1:47to the studying of the scriptures. In fact, for 7 years,
- 1:51he immersed himself almost exclusively in the Bible.
- 1:56He wasn't chasing the latest opinions or theological trends.
- 2:00He wanted to know what God himself had said. Those hidden
- 2:04years of study became the foundation for everything
- 2:07that followed. What an encouraging reminder for us.
- 2:11God's greatest preparation often takes place long before the
- 2:16opportunities come. The seasons that feel unnoticed are often the seasons
- 2:20when he is building us for future usefulness.
- 2:24Never confuse delay with denial.
- 2:27If God has called you, remain faithful right where you are
- 2:31and let him prepare you in his time. That preparation
- 2:35in Morgan's life bore remarkable fruit.
- 2:38D.L. Moody soon recognized Morgan's extraordinary gift for opening
- 2:42the Scriptures and invited him to become a regular speaker
- 2:46at the famous Northfield Bible Conference. Morgan pastored several churches
- 2:50throughout England before accepting the pastorate of Westminster Chapel in
- 2:54London. When he arrived, the congregation was struggling,
- 2:57and attendance was small. But through clear,
- 3:00faithful exposition of God's Word, the church was transformed
- 3:04into one of the most influential ministries in England.
- 3:08Later, Morgan spent many years traveling throughout America and
- 3:12Canada, preaching to large crowds, seeing many trust Christ,
- 3:16and encouraging believers to love the Bible more deeply.
- 3:19He also pastored the Tabernacle Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia,
- 3:23wrote more than 60 books, and produced Bible commentaries that
- 3:28continue to help pastors and Bible students today.
- 3:31Yet if you ask Morgan the secret of his ministry, he would
- 3:35not have pointed to his books or his reputation. He would have pointed
- 3:39to the Bible itself. He once said, the Church
- 3:44of the Living God is the pillar and ground of the truth. If the church
- 3:47is to do this work, she must know the Word of God
- 3:51for herself. Morgan understood something our
- 3:54generation desperately needs to recover.
- 3:57Churches are strengthened when believers know the Scriptures for themselves.
- 4:02Strong preaching can never replace personal Bible study.
- 4:07Sunday messages are meant to send us back to God's Word, not substitute
- 4:11for it. Perhaps the most remarkable illustration of Morgan's devotion
- 4:16is found in his sermon preparation. Before consulting commentaries
- 4:20or study helps, he would often read through the entire book
- 4:24of the Bible he planned to preach 40 or 50 times.
- 4:27He wanted the Bible to shape his thinking before anyone else's
- 4:32opinion did. Whether or not the stories are true that he memorized
- 4:36the entire Bible, there is no question that he filled his heart with its
- 4:40truths until they shaped every part of his life.
- 4:45What would happen if we approached Scripture that way? We may
- 4:49never read a book of the Bible 50 times before studying it,
- 4:53But what if we slowed down enough to read it carefully,
- 4:56prayerfully, and repeatedly? God's Word was
- 5:00never meant to be rushed. It is meant to renew our minds,
- 5:04to transform our hearts, and to conform us to the image
- 5:07of Jesus Christ. But Morgan never allowed Bible
- 5:11knowledge to become an end in itself.
- 5:14His study always pointed him toward the Savior and toward the souls
- 5:18who needed Him. He asked these searching questions:
- 5:22There is a person the world needs to see. Am I helping to show
- 5:26him to the world? There is a famine for the word of God everywhere.
- 5:31Am I doing anything to make it known?
- 5:34What a challenge. We live in a world overflowing
- 5:39with information. Every day our phones deliver headlines,
- 5:43opinions, videos, podcasts, and endless streams
- 5:46of content. Yet for all our knowledge,
- 5:50many people know less of God's Word than ever before.
- 5:54We skim everything and meditate on almost
- 5:58nothing. But every so often, God raises up someone
- 6:02whose life reminds us that one book, when believed,
- 6:05studied, and obeyed, is enough to change a person,
- 6:10and through that person, to change countless others. That was
- 6:14the testimony of G. Campbell Morgan. His influence
- 6:17did not begin behind a pulpit or in a crowded auditorium.
- 6:21It began with an open Bible and a heart that was
- 6:25willing to listen. Long before thousands
- 6:28benefited from his preaching, he had learned to sit at the feet of
- 6:32the greatest teacher of all. Perhaps the greatest lesson
- 6:36Morgan leaves us is not simply to read the Bible more but to let the
- 6:40Bible read us, to allow God's Word
- 6:44to shape our thinking, direct our decisions,
- 6:47strengthen our faith, and draw us closer to the Lord Jesus Christ.
- 6:52We may never preach to the crowds that Morgan did, but every believer
- 6:57can know the same God, cherish the same Scriptures,
- 7:00and experience the same transforming power of God's Word.
- 7:05So today, ask yourself, if God's Word was
- 7:08enough for G. Campbell Morgan, is it enough for me?
- 7:14Open your Bible, read it carefully,
- 7:17believe it completely, obey it faithfully.
- 7:21You may never realize this side of heaven what God can do through
- 7:24one life fully surrendered to one book.
