- 0:01If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God that giveth to
- 0:05all men, liberally and upbraideth not, and it shall be
- 0:09given him. Hello listeners, This is Nick
- 0:13from Scripture Central and today's podcast addresses the
- 0:16question. Why does God give liberally to
- 0:19those who ask the invitation and the epistle of James?
- 0:24For any who lack wisdom to ask God that giveth to all men,
- 0:28liberally and upbraideth not and it shall be given him, holds a
- 0:32significant place in the history of the Restoration.
- 0:35Reflecting on when he read this verse as a confused and
- 0:38uncertain youth, Joseph Smith said, Never did any passage of
- 0:43Scripture come with more power to the heart of man than this
- 0:47did at this time to mine. It seemed to enter with great
- 0:50force into every feeling of my heart.
- 0:53Reflecting on this passage ultimately compelled him to go
- 0:56out to what would become the sacred Grove and seek God in
- 1:00prayer, leading to the first vision.
- 1:04Given how James focuses on prayer at the beginning of his
- 1:06letter, one can understand why this verse had such a large
- 1:10impact and continues to have one to believers in Christ
- 1:14throughout the world. According to James, prayer is an
- 1:18especially effective tool to gain wisdom.
- 1:20While wisdom is generally understood to refer to skill at
- 1:23life, particularly the ability to make sound judgments and
- 1:27speak the right words, the wisdom referred to in the Bible
- 1:30often has deeper, more significant meanings than can be
- 1:34captured in English. In one word, particularly as
- 1:37used by James, wisdom refers to the gift of God, which enables
- 1:41one to be perfect, or, in James's conception, to stand the
- 1:46test of mortality. This meaning is especially
- 1:49prevalent in other early Jewish works such as Second Baruch,
- 1:54Second Estrus, First Enoch, and Sirach.
- 1:57When we receive wisdom from the Lord, then we are enabled to
- 2:00live in a godly and righteous way.
- 2:03Those who ask can be assured that they will receive this
- 2:06divine gift because of the nature of God.
- 2:11James assures us that God continually gives and is
- 2:15universal, unequivocal and generous and all that he gives
- 2:18to his children. By his very nature, God wants to
- 2:22bless everyone, and all that is required of us is to come to him
- 2:27asking sincerely in the name of Christ, with a sincere heart,
- 2:31with real intent, having faith in Christ, so that we can then
- 2:36receive these promised blessings.
- 2:38In addition, according to James, it is not just enough simply to
- 2:42ask the Lord. Rather, one must ask in faith,
- 2:46Nothing wavering, for he that Wavereth is like a wave of the
- 2:49sea driven with the wind and tossed.
- 2:52This statement made by James is best understood when viewed in
- 2:55its wider context of covenantal loyalty.
- 2:58For example, according to Dan McCartney, James does not mean
- 3:01that a believer may never have a measure of uncertainty regarding
- 3:05whether something is God's will. Rather, he is condemning the
- 3:08lack of commitment or a divided loyalty.
- 3:12Furthermore, James teaches that a double minded man is unstable
- 3:16in all his ways, and further explains that some of the
- 3:20Christians he was addressing did not have all their prayers
- 3:23answered previously, not because they doubted God, but because ye
- 3:27ask amiss that ye may consume it upon your lusts.
- 3:31The proper way to ask in faith, as James instructed, was to put
- 3:35away any divided loyalties. One should not ask to satisfy
- 3:39personal ambitions, but rather should draw nigh to God and he
- 3:44will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners,
- 3:47and purify your hearts, ye double minded.
- 3:50Such a relationship between faith and loyalty to God, as
- 3:54been noted by Brent Schmidt on several occasions, stands at the
- 3:58core of understanding New Testament teachings regarding
- 4:02acting in faith. Faith, far from being just a
- 4:06passive or abstract belief in God, invites us to develop a
- 4:10lifelong relationship with God based on mutual loyalty and
- 4:14love. Significantly, this
- 4:16understanding of James's instructions regarding prayer
- 4:19and receiving wisdom can be seen clearly in Joseph Smith's prayer
- 4:24as recorded in his Personal History.
- 4:27According to Joseph Smith, he wanted to live in a matter
- 4:30pleasing to God and felt to mourn for his own sins and for
- 4:34the sins of the world, leading him to cry unto the Lord for
- 4:38mercy. For there was none else to whom
- 4:40I could go. And to obtain mercy, Joseph
- 4:43wanted to establish a relationship with the Lord so
- 4:46that he could receive forgiveness of his sins and
- 4:48obtain salvation. Joseph Smith was also committed
- 4:52to acting on what he learned from the Lord.
- 4:54This is demonstrated by the fact that after God the Father and
- 4:57Jesus Christ appeared to Him, Joseph not only asked which of
- 5:01all the sects was right, but he also wanted to know which I
- 5:06should join. Unlike double minded seekers,
- 5:09Joseph was fully committed to seeking wisdom from the Lord and
- 5:13acting on what He learned throughout his life.
- 5:16Like Joseph Smith, we all have a need to go off into the Lord and
- 5:20seek His wisdom in our daily lives.
- 5:22Such requests for wisdom need to come from a desire to follow the
- 5:26Lord and demonstrate our loyalty to Him as expressed by Jesus
- 5:31himself. This precludes the possibility
- 5:33that we ever serve 2 masters. No man can serve 2 masters, for
- 5:38either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will
- 5:41hold to the one and despise the other.
- 5:44Ye cannot serve God and mammon. A major aspect of this important
- 5:49invitation can be seen in James Chapter 4, as James earnestly
- 5:53pleads for the early Christians to repent of their sins and
- 5:56humble themselves before the Lord.
- 5:59When we have faith in God's character as a loving Father who
- 6:02wants to bless us, and when we act with the loyalty to God
- 6:06requisite our petition, all things that will be for our
- 6:09eternal good shall be made manifest and we will be blessed
- 6:13with increased desires and even greater abilities to become more
- 6:17fully like Him. Thank you for listening to this
