- 0:00Speaker 1: The spirit of life in Christ Jesus. We learned this
- 0:04Speaker 1: morning from God's word to the Corinthians that there are
- 0:07Speaker 1: two classes of Christians. Paul speaks of some who are
- 0:11Speaker 1: carnal and of others who are spiritual. I tried to
- 0:15Speaker 1: point out what the life of the carnal Christian is,
- 0:18Speaker 1: what a wrong and wretched state it is, and on
- 0:21Speaker 1: the other hand, what the steps are by which we
- 0:23Speaker 1: can get out of the carnal state into the spiritual.
- 0:27Speaker 1: Among these steps I mentioned first of all that a
- 0:30Speaker 1: man must be fully convicted of the wrongness of the
- 0:33Speaker 1: carnal state and of the possibilities and blessedness of the
- 0:37Speaker 1: spiritual state. I want to night to speak of the latter,
- 0:41Speaker 1: and to set before you what God's word teaches of
- 0:44Speaker 1: a life in the spirit. You know, when the children
- 0:48Speaker 1: of Israel got to Kadesh Bahnier, they sent out spies
- 0:52Speaker 1: to see what the land was like. God expected that
- 0:55Speaker 1: when they saw the grapes and heard of the beauty
- 0:57Speaker 1: of that land, they would all enter in. So God
- 1:01Speaker 1: wants us to look at the spiritual life until we
- 1:05Speaker 1: believe that it is indeed to be divided and within
- 1:08Speaker 1: our reach. Later on, in these addresses we shall have
- 1:12Speaker 1: occasion to come back to the carnal life and the
- 1:15Speaker 1: passage out of it. But I want, by God's help
- 1:18Speaker 1: to night, just to set before you what the life
- 1:21Speaker 1: is in the fullness of the Spirit, as God expects
- 1:25Speaker 1: his children to live it day by day. I want
- 1:28Speaker 1: to take you to a chapter in God's Word where
- 1:31Speaker 1: it is set before us more plainly than in any
- 1:33Speaker 1: other chapter. Romans, the eighth chapter. Let us read the
- 1:38Speaker 1: first sixteen verses. You will find in these seven blessings
- 1:43Speaker 1: seven of the blest fruits of the Spirit in us.
- 1:46Speaker 1: I shall point them out as we read. One who
- 1:51Speaker 1: walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. The
- 1:55Speaker 1: whole of our conduct is under the rule of the Spirit. Two.
- 2:00Speaker 1: For the law of the Spirit of life. In Christ,
- 2:03Speaker 1: Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin
- 2:05Speaker 1: and death. The Spirit brings us into liberties. Three they
- 2:12Speaker 1: that are after the Spirit, ye are in the spirit.
- 2:16Speaker 1: The Spirit dwells in you. The Christian has a new nature.
- 2:21Speaker 1: God's Spirit is in him. Four Do mind the things
- 2:26Speaker 1: of the spirit. To be spiritually minded is life and peace.
- 2:31Speaker 1: Mind means disposition to mind the things of the spirit.
- 2:35Speaker 1: To have a spiritual disposition five Verse thirteen. If ye,
- 2:41Speaker 1: through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body,
- 2:45Speaker 1: ye shall live. The Spirit makes the death to sin
- 2:48Speaker 1: an actual reality in our body. Six. As many as
- 2:53Speaker 1: are led by the Spirit of God, they are the
- 2:56Speaker 1: sons of God divine guidance. Seven. Ye have not received
- 3:02Speaker 1: the spirit of bondage again to fear, but ye have
- 3:06Speaker 1: received the spirit of adoption. The Spirit beareth witness with
- 3:10Speaker 1: our spirit. What I want to put before you is this,
- 3:15Speaker 1: that all we have in this chapter is simply the
- 3:18Speaker 1: description of the normal Christian life. This is a thing
- 3:22Speaker 1: for every believer. We are sometimes in danger of talking
- 3:26Speaker 1: about the baptism of the Spirit, of being filled with
- 3:29Speaker 1: the Spirit for service, as though that were all. But
- 3:33Speaker 1: it is possible, as I pointed out this morning, to
- 3:36Speaker 1: have baptism of the Holy Spirit for special service and
- 3:39Speaker 1: yet be carnal. We want to feel that we must
- 3:43Speaker 1: not seek the baptism of the Holy Spirit as a
- 3:46Speaker 1: power for work only, but as a far more important matter.
- 3:50Speaker 1: We must have the baptism of the Holy Spirit for
- 3:53Speaker 1: our whole life. The work must be the outcome of
- 3:56Speaker 1: the life. There are over one hundred men in the
- 4:00Speaker 1: gold Fields of South Africa who have been Christian workers
- 4:04Speaker 1: but have now given up their religion for gold. It
- 4:07Speaker 1: is possible that at the time of their service they
- 4:10Speaker 1: had the spirit of God, but it was a very
- 4:13Speaker 1: superficial work in their hearts and lives. The Holy Spirit
- 4:17Speaker 1: had never been allowed to go down into the very
- 4:20Speaker 1: depths of their being to establish the life of God
- 4:23Speaker 1: through their whole nature. If he had, they would never
- 4:27Speaker 1: have gone back. Nothing can take us back when the
- 4:31Speaker 1: Holy Spirit gets entire possession of our inner life. I
- 4:36Speaker 1: want to show you this evening what provision God has
- 4:38Speaker 1: made for you. You know in England that the nobility,
- 4:43Speaker 1: when they want their names to be carried down, entail
- 4:46Speaker 1: their estate, so that it must always go to the
- 4:48Speaker 1: eldest son. Often there will be younger sons who get
- 4:52Speaker 1: almost nothing. God does not do that He disinherits none
- 4:58Speaker 1: of his sons. He calls all of his children to
- 5:01Speaker 1: share a like in the blessed gift of the Holy Spirit.
- 5:05Speaker 1: All may not have the same gift of powerful work,
- 5:08Speaker 1: but all may and must have the fitness for a
- 5:11Speaker 1: life full of God. Let us all seek Him. Let
- 5:16Speaker 1: me point you to seven principal thoughts in the Passage First,
- 5:21Speaker 1: the Christian is a man who walks after the Spirit.
- 5:24Speaker 1: In Galatians, it is said, if we live in the spirit,
- 5:27Speaker 1: let us also walk in the spirit. Walk in the spirit,
- 5:31Speaker 1: and ye shall not fulfill the lusts of the flesh.
- 5:35Speaker 1: My walk is my conduct, what the Bible calls my conversation,
- 5:40Speaker 1: my course of life, my external manner of life. Here
- 5:44Speaker 1: I am told as a Christian. God will enable me
- 5:47Speaker 1: to walk after the Spirit, with the Spirit as my inspiration.
- 5:52Speaker 1: Unconverted men walk after the flesh. The flesh leads them
- 5:56Speaker 1: and tells them what to do. The Christian can come
- 5:59Speaker 1: into the life of the Spirit. In it, he acts.
- 6:03Speaker 1: In it, he walks. He has the continual, hidden guidance
- 6:06Speaker 1: of the Spirit of God, molding and shaping his will
- 6:10Speaker 1: and walk. I may be a minister if I walk
- 6:14Speaker 1: after the Spirit. That does not mean that I am
- 6:16Speaker 1: to pray for the Spirit just before I preach, and
- 6:19Speaker 1: in other things live after the flesh. No God calls
- 6:23Speaker 1: us to walk in the spirit at all times. Is
- 6:27Speaker 1: not that what you wish? I need the Spirit so
- 6:30Speaker 1: that when I sit down at my table, when my
- 6:33Speaker 1: temper might be tempted to rise in my business in
- 6:37Speaker 1: trials of any kind. I may feel the power of
- 6:39Speaker 1: the Holy Spirit working in me and moving me, or
- 6:44Speaker 1: my walk is to be according to the spirit. How
- 6:47Speaker 1: can I get to that? Second Paul says in the
- 6:52Speaker 1: second verse, for the law of the Spirit of life
- 6:55Speaker 1: in Christ, Jesus has made me free from the law
- 6:58Speaker 1: of sin and death. In the seventh chapter, he speaks
- 7:02Speaker 1: of a believer, a regenerated man who delights in the
- 7:05Speaker 1: law of God after the inward man, but who finds
- 7:08Speaker 1: another law in his members that leads him into captivity,
- 7:12Speaker 1: to the law of sin and death. I am a prisoner.
- 7:16Speaker 1: I am a captive. I want to do good, but
- 7:19Speaker 1: I cannot. Suppose a husband who is in prison with
- 7:23Speaker 1: his wife and children all starving, she writes to him,
- 7:27Speaker 1: Can you not do something to help me? He writes back,
- 7:31Speaker 1: I long to help you. I would do anything I
- 7:34Speaker 1: could to help you. But here I am bound so
- 7:37Speaker 1: that I cannot. This is just like the believer in
- 7:41Speaker 1: the seventh chapter of Romans. I long to obey God,
- 7:44Speaker 1: but I cannot. Why because he is bound with the
- 7:49Speaker 1: chains of the flesh, in captivity to the law of
- 7:52Speaker 1: sin and death in his members. But the spirit sets
- 7:56Speaker 1: a man free out of this captivity. The law of
- 7:59Speaker 1: the Spirit of life hath made me free from the
- 8:02Speaker 1: law of sin and death. Let us believe there are
- 8:06Speaker 1: two powers, the power of the Spirit and the power
- 8:09Speaker 1: of sin, which is stronger. Many Christians tell me the
- 8:13Speaker 1: power of the flesh is stronger. It is very sad
- 8:17Speaker 1: that so many think. Thus, Paul tells me. God tells
- 8:20Speaker 1: me that the power of the Holy Spirit is stronger,
- 8:24Speaker 1: and the power of the Holy Spirit can make me
- 8:26Speaker 1: free from the law of sin and death if I
- 8:29Speaker 1: trust him. It is not here a question of the
- 8:32Speaker 1: last root of sin being exterminated. We believe the tendency
- 8:36Speaker 1: to evil remains to the end. But we believe this word, too,
- 8:41Speaker 1: is literal truth, that the Spirit of life in Christ
- 8:45Speaker 1: makes me free from the law of sin to such
- 8:48Speaker 1: extent that it has no power over me. My enemy
- 8:52Speaker 1: is there, but he cannot touch me. After the close
- 8:56Speaker 1: of your Civil War, those who had been slaves could
- 8:58Speaker 1: dwell in the presence of their former masters. The masters
- 9:02Speaker 1: were not dead, and yet they could not touch them.
- 9:05Speaker 1: Just so the Holy Spirit can take possession, and in
- 9:09Speaker 1: the presence of the power of sin, the Holy Spirit
- 9:12Speaker 1: can fill the believer and make sin powerless. Are there
- 9:16Speaker 1: not many who serve God under constraint, who have to
- 9:20Speaker 1: force themselves to go and work for God, and then
- 9:23Speaker 1: ever feel that they come far short. They cannot rejoice
- 9:27Speaker 1: in the liberty wherewith Christ has made us free. The
- 9:31Speaker 1: Master said, if the Sun make you free, ye shall
- 9:34Speaker 1: be free. Indeed, but you do not enjoy it. If
- 9:38Speaker 1: you believed it, if you trusted God's word for it,
- 9:42Speaker 1: you would begin to long for the fullness of the
- 9:44Speaker 1: Holy Spirit. And you would understand that nothing less than
- 9:48Speaker 1: this being made free by the Holy Spirit dwelling in
- 9:51Speaker 1: His fullness in you, can enable you to live an
- 9:54Speaker 1: inwardly holy life. Third, ye are not in the flesh,
- 10:00Speaker 1: but in the spirit, if so be that the Spirit
- 10:02Speaker 1: of God dwell in you, of the Spirit after the Spirit,
- 10:07Speaker 1: in the Spirit, the Spirit of God in you. All
- 10:11Speaker 1: these expressions are used to express the one thought of
- 10:14Speaker 1: the closeness and the reality of the blessed union by
- 10:17Speaker 1: which the Holy Spirit takes possession of me. I am
- 10:21Speaker 1: in him, and he is in me, just as a
- 10:24Speaker 1: man is in the air and the air is in him.
- 10:27Speaker 1: The air is in my lungs, and I am in
- 10:29Speaker 1: the air that surrounds me. The two things go together.
- 10:33Speaker 1: I go into the fresh air, and the fresh air
- 10:36Speaker 1: comes into me. Even so, the child of God is
- 10:40Speaker 1: taken out of the life of the flesh and taken
- 10:43Speaker 1: into the life of the Spirit. The Spirit surrounds him
- 10:46Speaker 1: on every side with a divine power that is breathed
- 10:49Speaker 1: into him, and that constitutes his life. He is in
- 10:53Speaker 1: the Spirit, and the Spirit is in him. He is
- 10:57Speaker 1: after the Spirit, and the very nature, the divine nature
- 11:01Speaker 1: of the Spirit is in him. Have you ever thought
- 11:04Speaker 1: about it? How wonderful the Spirit of God becomes the
- 11:08Speaker 1: very spirit of our life. Many people think of the
- 11:11Speaker 1: Holy Spirit dwelling in us as a man dwells in
- 11:14Speaker 1: a house. The man of the house remain separate existences
- 11:18Speaker 1: all the time. There is no organic union, no participation
- 11:22Speaker 1: of life or nature between the two. That is not
- 11:26Speaker 1: the way with the Holy Spirit. He comes into my
- 11:29Speaker 1: very being. And just as my thinking and willing and
- 11:32Speaker 1: feeling is my very nature, so by the Holy Spirit
- 11:36Speaker 1: I become partaker of the divine nature. He enters deep,
- 11:41Speaker 1: deep into me and pervades my whole inner life. The
- 11:45Speaker 1: Spirit of God is in me, and I am in
- 11:48Speaker 1: the Spirit of God. Ort that not to fill us
- 11:51Speaker 1: with a holy fear and a holy joy. Fear lest
- 11:55Speaker 1: we should remain ignorant of the truth. Joy in the
- 11:58Speaker 1: expectation of all will do. The Spirit who came out
- 12:02Speaker 1: from the Father and the Son, brings and reveals them
- 12:05Speaker 1: to me. And the three persons in the One Godhead
- 12:09Speaker 1: through him come into my heart. And so I live
- 12:12Speaker 1: in the spirit. O believers who do not think it
- 12:16Speaker 1: possible to live this blessed life, I will tell you
- 12:19Speaker 1: the simple reason. Because you do not believe God. You
- 12:23Speaker 1: do not believe that Almighty God will dwell in you.
- 12:27Speaker 1: Will you not begin and say, if it be true,
- 12:30Speaker 1: I may be in the spirit, just as I am
- 12:32Speaker 1: in the air. Thank God, I think I can lead
- 12:35Speaker 1: a holy and blessed life. Fourth, they that are after
- 12:41Speaker 1: the spirit do mind the things of the spirit. What
- 12:45Speaker 1: does that word mind mean? Generally it is used of
- 12:49Speaker 1: the intellect, but here it means something else. You know,
- 12:53Speaker 1: when I speak of a high minded man by mind,
- 12:56Speaker 1: I mean disposition. A large hearted man is one of
- 13:00Speaker 1: a large hearted disposition. To be a spiritual minded man
- 13:05Speaker 1: is to have the disposition of the Holy Spirit. Heavenly
- 13:08Speaker 1: minded is a mind that has the spirit and disposition
- 13:12Speaker 1: of Heaven. To be spiritually minded is life and peace.
- 13:17Speaker 1: The Holy Spirit is ready to breathe within me the
- 13:20Speaker 1: very mind and disposition of Christ. That is what Paul
- 13:24Speaker 1: meant in writing to the Philippians. Let this mind be
- 13:27Speaker 1: in you that was in Christ, Jesus et cetera. If
- 13:32Speaker 1: the Holy Spirit comes in and takes possession of my disposition,
- 13:36Speaker 1: I shall have the mind of Christ. God's word says,
- 13:40Speaker 1: love thy neighbor as thyself. You have tried hard but
- 13:44Speaker 1: failed because it is not natural. But it is no
- 13:48Speaker 1: difficulty to a mother to be gentle and loving, because
- 13:51Speaker 1: it is her natural disposition to be so. Just so,
- 13:55Speaker 1: the Holy Spirit will make my disposition spiritual minded. Lives
- 14:00Speaker 1: within me and breathes into me everything that is gentle
- 14:03Speaker 1: and christ like and humble. He puts it so into
- 14:07Speaker 1: me that it becomes my very nature. I can love
- 14:11Speaker 1: him whom I hated. The love of God is indeed
- 14:15Speaker 1: a wonderful mystery when it becomes ours. The more unlovable
- 14:19Speaker 1: a man is, the more we love him. The more
- 14:22Speaker 1: unworthy a man is, the more love is magnified. In
- 14:26Speaker 1: loving him, you find it so hard to keep your tempers.
- 14:31Speaker 1: There is just one reason for this you are not
- 14:33Speaker 1: spiritually minded. The Spirit of God must come and fill you.
- 14:39Speaker 1: You may have had him in some measure, but he
- 14:41Speaker 1: must fill you deeper and deeper. He must fill you
- 14:45Speaker 1: with the disposition of Jesus, so that you become spiritually
- 14:48Speaker 1: minded Christians, would you not long to have such a
- 14:52Speaker 1: disposition that everything about you might be spiritual? The Spirit
- 14:57Speaker 1: who dwells in you can and will give if you
- 14:59Speaker 1: ye him fifth verse thirteen. If ye through the Spirit
- 15:06Speaker 1: do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.
- 15:10Speaker 1: The word mortify simply means to cause to die. If
- 15:15Speaker 1: ye make dead the deeds of the body, ye shall live.
- 15:19Speaker 1: The man who has not given the body over to
- 15:22Speaker 1: the spirit to do his work, what a troubled body
- 15:25Speaker 1: gives him? How much sin comes out of the body.
- 15:29Speaker 1: Many Christians never understand that it is the deeds of
- 15:32Speaker 1: the body that must be made dead. But it is
- 15:36Speaker 1: very hard, and in fact impossible, until we begin to
- 15:39Speaker 1: see that it is through the Holy Ghost, who is
- 15:42Speaker 1: the mighty power of God. It is a very simple
- 15:46Speaker 1: thing eating and drinking a little too much? And is
- 15:50Speaker 1: that such a great sin? Ask the Bible, whether ye
- 15:54Speaker 1: eat or drink? Do all to the glory of God.
- 15:58Speaker 1: Over eating or eating for mere enjoyment waits and makes
- 16:01Speaker 1: the body heavy and unfit for prayer. That is the
- 16:05Speaker 1: time the devil can come to you. A man may
- 16:08Speaker 1: be living in victory over some sin, but through the
- 16:11Speaker 1: pleasure of eating, the devil may get power over his flesh.
- 16:16Speaker 1: When you think you are only feeding the body, you
- 16:19Speaker 1: are feeding the flesh. You are strengthening it by gratifying
- 16:22Speaker 1: its appetite that cannot please God. Temper is very much
- 16:28Speaker 1: a sin of the flesh. It is in me, it
- 16:31Speaker 1: is in my selfhood. A bundle of nerves is nothing
- 16:34Speaker 1: but a bundle of self. The Holy Spirit is able
- 16:38Speaker 1: to mortify the deeds of the body and to reign
- 16:41Speaker 1: through it all with his divine peace and power. If
- 16:46Speaker 1: you want to have the deeds of the body mortified,
- 16:48Speaker 1: beware of the lust of the flesh and the lust
- 16:51Speaker 1: of the eyes. Ah Christians, remember if you want to
- 16:56Speaker 1: have your body the temple of the Holy Ghost. If
- 16:59Speaker 1: you want to live a holy life, you must be
- 17:01Speaker 1: filled with the spirit. Your body, too, must be under
- 17:05Speaker 1: the power. You might know the mysteries of the heavens,
- 17:09Speaker 1: like the apostle Paul, but this could give you no
- 17:12Speaker 1: help to live a holy life. God's word has no
- 17:15Speaker 1: help for you, except as it tells you that you
- 17:18Speaker 1: must be filled with the spirit. You know how Scripture
- 17:21Speaker 1: speaks about being baptized into the death of Christ. We
- 17:26Speaker 1: must reckon ourselves indeed dead unto sin and alive unto God.
- 17:31Speaker 1: It says we are crucified with Christ, we are dead,
- 17:35Speaker 1: and then it adds mortify. Therefore your members, My inmost
- 17:41Speaker 1: regenerated life is life out of death, a life dead
- 17:45Speaker 1: to sin in Christ, and the Spirit of Christ maintains
- 17:49Speaker 1: the power of that death in the body. People say
- 17:53Speaker 1: that this is too hard. You know. The Christians of
- 17:56Speaker 1: old sometimes gave their whole lives to keep down the body,
- 18:00Speaker 1: and some of the most earnest would go into solitary caves.
- 18:03Speaker 1: And yet there they found themselves tempted more than ever
- 18:06Speaker 1: with evil spirits. They were trying to be holy by
- 18:10Speaker 1: self mortification, but they did not succeed. If ye, through
- 18:15Speaker 1: the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye
- 18:18Speaker 1: shall live. If ye are willing to claim and receive
- 18:22Speaker 1: the power of the Holy Spirit, the thing can be done.
- 18:26Speaker 1: It was the Holy Spirit that took Christ to Calvary.
- 18:30Speaker 1: It was through the eternal Spirit he offered himself as
- 18:33Speaker 1: a sacrifice unto God. By that eternal Spirit, we too
- 18:38Speaker 1: can be led to Calvary, to the place of crucifixion,
- 18:42Speaker 1: to the conformity of Christ's death and the experience of
- 18:45Speaker 1: its power. Have you ever cried in despair, oh, that
- 18:50Speaker 1: I might be crucified to the world and dead to sin?
- 18:54Speaker 1: The Holy Spirit will do it. Oh, the blessedness of
- 18:58Speaker 1: a life filled with this spirit. It sixth. As many
- 19:03Speaker 1: as are led by the Spirit of God, they are
- 19:06Speaker 1: the sons of God. There you have the leading of
- 19:09Speaker 1: the Holy Spirit. There are a great many people who
- 19:13Speaker 1: are always ready to ask do tell me how can
- 19:16Speaker 1: I know the leading of the Holy Spirit. I want
- 19:19Speaker 1: to know God's will. I pray and seek and cannot
- 19:22Speaker 1: get it. They want to know God's will in some
- 19:26Speaker 1: perplexing question. I always tell them, you begin at the
- 19:30Speaker 1: wrong end. What does a little child do He comes
- 19:34Speaker 1: to his father and says, I want to be an engineer.
- 19:38Speaker 1: The father says, yes, my son, but you must learn
- 19:41Speaker 1: a number of things before you can be an engineer.
- 19:44Speaker 1: The child may say, I want to be an engineer,
- 19:47Speaker 1: but I don't want to learn all those things. The
- 19:50Speaker 1: Father will point out that he must learn to add one,
- 19:54Speaker 1: two and three and so on before he can be
- 19:57Speaker 1: an engineer, and it will take a good long time.
- 20:00Speaker 1: He must master the simple things before he can go
- 20:03Speaker 1: on to the higher And so I say to the inquirer,
- 20:08Speaker 1: the Holy Spirit wants to lead you in the simpler
- 20:11Speaker 1: things of daily life. He wants you in daily life
- 20:15Speaker 1: to be spiritually minded. Then you will know the mind
- 20:18Speaker 1: of the Spirit in special circumstances. If in your daily
- 20:23Speaker 1: life you will say, Lord, let me know what my
- 20:25Speaker 1: conduct to day should be, then you will be prepared
- 20:29Speaker 1: for understanding his leading in times of need. Then he
- 20:33Speaker 1: will lead you into deeper things of God's word. Then
- 20:36Speaker 1: he will show you how you are to walk. That
- 20:40Speaker 1: is exactly the life of the Lord Jesus. You remember
- 20:44Speaker 1: he said, I cannot do anything of myself. The words
- 20:47Speaker 1: I speak are not my own. What the Father showeth
- 20:50Speaker 1: me I do, et cetera. He was always listening to
- 20:54Speaker 1: the voice of God and was led by God. Is
- 20:58Speaker 1: it not a wonderful privy for us? As God says,
- 21:02Speaker 1: as many as are led by the Spirit of God,
- 21:05Speaker 1: they are the sons of God. Dear Christians, would you
- 21:09Speaker 1: not be willing to sacrifice everything for that that you
- 21:13Speaker 1: might be led by the spirit. You know God cannot
- 21:16Speaker 1: abate his requirements. I must give up having any will
- 21:20Speaker 1: of my own. I must desire above everything to lead
- 21:24Speaker 1: a holy life like Jesus, independent, humble, waiting upon God.
- 21:31Speaker 1: You say that is hard. It is not hard. It
- 21:34Speaker 1: is the most blessed life. It is exactly the life
- 21:38Speaker 1: Jesus lived. Is it not a privilege to have the
- 21:41Speaker 1: blessed God lead and guide me all along in everything
- 21:46Speaker 1: He has promised to do that. As many as are
- 21:49Speaker 1: led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons
- 21:52Speaker 1: of God. Oh beloved, let us realize what this life is.
- 21:58Speaker 1: If you speak about the baptism of the Holy Spirit
- 22:01Speaker 1: for service, and I want you to speak about it,
- 22:04Speaker 1: I want you to be filled with the Holy Spirit
- 22:06Speaker 1: for your work. Remember there is something of far deeper importance.
- 22:11Speaker 1: It is that your whole life, from moment to moment,
- 22:14Speaker 1: bear the mark of being led by the Spirit, of
- 22:17Speaker 1: being spiritually minded. The Spirit of Jesus makes you like Jesus.
- 22:23Speaker 1: By the Holy Ghost, you can live a christ like life. Seventh,
- 22:31Speaker 1: ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear.
- 22:34Speaker 1: But ye have received the spirit of adoption, whereby we
- 22:38Speaker 1: cry Abba Father, the spirit dwelleth with our spirit. What
- 22:44Speaker 1: spirit the spirit that has been described in the previous
- 22:48Speaker 1: verses as leading us, making as spiritually minded, mortifying the
- 22:52Speaker 1: deeds of the body, That is the spirit of adoption.
- 22:57Speaker 1: This is the spirit that will bear witness that I
- 22:59Speaker 1: am am a son of God. Many people talk about
- 23:03Speaker 1: the witness of the Holy Spirit they received when they believed.
- 23:07Speaker 1: I do not say they are not children of God,
- 23:10Speaker 1: but they do not live like it. If we want
- 23:13Speaker 1: the spirit of adoption, by which every day we can
- 23:17Speaker 1: have the assurance and evidence that can confidently say Abba Father,
- 23:22Speaker 1: then we must be in the spirit and must walk
- 23:25Speaker 1: after the spirit. If by him I am living, if
- 23:29Speaker 1: he dwell in and possess me, If I be of
- 23:32Speaker 1: the spirit and after the Spirit, if the Spirit is mine,
- 23:36Speaker 1: my life will be one of increasing joy and fellowship
- 23:40Speaker 1: with God. How gently he leads me, how close he
- 23:44Speaker 1: keeps by me. Through him, God fulfills the word that
- 23:48Speaker 1: He spoke to the elder son, in the parable of
- 23:50Speaker 1: the prodigal son, Son, Thou art ever with me, and
- 23:54Speaker 1: all I have is thine that becomes a possession, an
- 23:58Speaker 1: experience made real by the Holy Ghost, that makes the spiritual,
- 24:03Speaker 1: heavenly minded man. Abba Father, I do not have to
- 24:08Speaker 1: try and feel, or claim or struggle for the relationship.
- 24:12Speaker 1: But the Everlasting God reveals himself to me as a father.
- 24:17Speaker 1: So the Living Father makes us to know what it
- 24:19Speaker 1: means to be dwelling in love and dwelling in God,
- 24:23Speaker 1: and what all the promises about the Holy Spirit mean.
- 24:27Speaker 1: The Father shall send the comforter that he may abide
- 24:30Speaker 1: with you forever. Beloved Christians, there is a wonderful life
- 24:36Speaker 1: which the Holy Spirit makes intensely true. It is a
- 24:40Speaker 1: real Canaan life. It is indeed a solemn, precious thought.
- 24:45Speaker 1: God's Holy Spirit can make all God's promises and provisions
- 24:48Speaker 1: in Christ our experience. Who are ready to come into
- 24:53Speaker 1: this life to night and claim the heritage as the
- 24:55Speaker 1: child of God? Who will cry, I am going to
- 24:59Speaker 1: ask Romans eight one to sixteen, shall be literally fulfilled
- 25:04Speaker 1: in my life? Let me suggest four simple steps, say,
- 25:11Speaker 1: to night, I must be filled with the spirit. God
- 25:14Speaker 1: commands it. My soul needs it, the spirit longs for it.
- 25:19Speaker 1: Christ will do it. The world needs it. I cannot
- 25:23Speaker 1: live aright without it. I must be filled with the spirit. Secondly,
- 25:28Speaker 1: I may be filled with the spirit. God does not
- 25:32Speaker 1: give a must without a may. God does not say
- 25:35Speaker 1: you must live holy without saying you may you can
- 25:39Speaker 1: live holy? Say I may. God has promised it. Christ
- 25:44Speaker 1: has purchased it. The Word reveals it. Thousands have experienced it.
- 25:49Speaker 1: I may be filled with the spirit. Third I would
- 25:54Speaker 1: be filled with the spirit. Say Lord, my heart longs
- 25:59Speaker 1: for it. Begin to say, I give up everything, O God, self,
- 26:03Speaker 1: sin self, will, self, confidence, the flesh. I give up everything.
- 26:09Speaker 1: I would be filled with the Holy Spirit. Lord, God,
- 26:12Speaker 1: set thy mark upon me. I am an empty vessel
- 26:16Speaker 1: waiting to be filled. I would be filled with the
- 26:18Speaker 1: Holy Spirit. I am ready. Fourthly, I shall be filled
- 26:25Speaker 1: with the Holy Spirit. God has promised it to me.
- 26:28Speaker 1: I have a right to say I shall be filled
- 26:30Speaker 1: with the spirit. Say that, tremblingly and very very humble,
- 26:36Speaker 1: I confess I am carnal. I have felt my sinfulness.
- 26:40Speaker 1: I confess my sin. My heart is willing for it.
- 26:44Speaker 1: I am going to trust God for it. O, God,
- 26:48Speaker 1: Thou doest above what I can ask or think. I
- 26:51Speaker 1: give myself to thee entirely I trust THEE forever. I
- 26:55Speaker 1: give myself up fully, and I claim the filling of
- 26:58Speaker 1: thy Holy Spirit, Thou givest it
