- 0:01There are those who treat astrology as a science, those
- 0:05who believe that our fate is determined by the stars, and
- 0:10also those who believe that astrology is a pseudoscience
- 0:13with no real basis in anything that can meaningfully either
- 0:17control our destiny or even signify events in our lives.
- 0:23How can we understand what role, if any, astrology has in
- 0:28providing guidance and direction in our lives?
- 0:32If we accept the idea that astrology rules our fate, then
- 0:37we are tacitly accepting the sense of determinism and doing
- 0:41away with any role for free will in the development of our lives.
- 0:46This position clearly runs contrary to our innate sense of
- 0:50free will, which, even if not absolutely correct, nevertheless
- 0:57expresses a deeply held intuitive understanding in our
- 1:01human awareness. At the same time, if we
- 1:06recognize that we live in one coherent universal existence and
- 1:10all the parts are elements of the whole subject to the
- 1:14vibrational patterns that occur in the whole, and therefore
- 1:19there is and must be an influence.
- 1:23Philosophers and certain scientists have noticed patterns
- 1:27that occur in the macro universe and in the micro universe.
- 1:33Fractals also repeat the pattern to ever smaller values and
- 1:38fractals are represented throughout the plant and animal
- 1:41Kingdom. Clearly the sense of as above,
- 1:46so below has some real and serious meaning in the world.
- 1:52This does not mean that we can correctly interpret every
- 1:55perceived correspondence, but in the main large patterns are able
- 2:00to express and signify for us the influence of forces that
- 2:05work at the universal level and impact individual lives.
- 2:11We then come to the question of free will and the ability to
- 2:15change the pattern at the individual level, despite the
- 2:19universal influence that may be active.
- 2:23Sri Aurobindo discusses this point at some length.
- 2:27Sri Aurobindo notes quote many astrological predictions come
- 2:32true, quite a mass of them if one takes all together.
- 2:38But it does not follow that the stars rule our destiny.
- 2:42The stars merely record a destiny that has been already
- 2:46formed. They are a hieroglyph, not a
- 2:49force. Or if their action constitutes a
- 2:53force, it is a transmitting energy, not an originating
- 2:57power. Someone is there who has
- 3:00determined or something is there which is fate.
- 3:03Let us say the stars are only indicators.
- 3:08The astrologers themselves say that there are two forces, Daiva
- 3:12and Purusakhara, fate and individual energy, and the
- 3:18individual energy can modify and even frustrate fate.
- 3:22Moreover, the stars often indicate several fate
- 3:26possibilities, for example that one may die in mid age, but that
- 3:31if that determination can be overcome, one can live to a
- 3:35predictable old age. Finally, cases are seen in which
- 3:40the predictions of the horoscope fulfill themselves with great
- 3:44accuracy up to a certain age, then apply no more.
- 3:50This often happens when the subject turns away from the
- 3:52ordinary to the spiritual life. If the turn is very radical, the
- 3:58cessation of predictability may be immediate.
- 4:02Otherwise, certain results may still last on for a time, but
- 4:07there is no longer the same inevitability.
- 4:11This would seem to show that there is or can be a higher
- 4:15power or higher plane, or higher source of spiritual destiny,
- 4:19which can, if its hour has come, override the lower power, lower
- 4:26plane, or lower source of vital and material fate, of which the
- 4:31stars are indicators. I say vital because character
- 4:35can also be indicated from the horoscope much more completely
- 4:39and satisfactorily than the events of the life.
- 4:44The Indian explanation of fate is karma.
- 4:48We ourselves see our own fate through our actions, but the
- 4:51fate created by us binds us for what we have sown, we must reap
- 4:57in this life or another. Still we are creating our fate
- 5:02for the future, even while undergoing old fate from the
- 5:05past in the present. That gives a meaning to our will
- 5:10and action and does not, as European critics wrongly
- 5:14believe, constitute A rigid and sterilizing fatalism.
- 5:19But again, our will and action can often annul or modify even
- 5:25the past karma. It is only strong effects called
- 5:30utkata karma that are non modifiable.
- 5:34Here, too, the achievement of the spiritual consciousness and
- 5:38life is supposed to annul or give the power to annul karma.
- 5:43For we enter into union with the will, divine, cosmic, or
- 5:47transcendent, which can annul what it had sanctioned for
- 5:52certain conditions, new create what it had created.
- 5:56The narrow fixed lines disappear.
- 6:00There is a more plastic freedom and wideness.
- 6:03Neither Karma nor astrology, therefore points to a rigid and
- 6:08forever immutable fate. End Quote Reference Sri
