Transcript
- 0:07Suze: December 25th, 2025. What do you want to say?
- 0:11KT: Happy Christmas. Happy Christmas. Happy Christmas. It's here.
- 0:15Suze: It's here. She says Happy. I say Merry, Merry Christmas..
- 0:19KT: And happy Hanukkah for those of you that enjoyed that
- 0:22KT: week of lighting candles, playing the dreidel game, Suze, tell them what the dreidel is
- 0:28Suze: I was just gonna say, and we hope all of
- 0:29Suze: you had a great Hanukkah because we did. And what's
- 0:32Suze: so strange about the dreidel game that KT just talked about,
- 0:36Suze: which is literally just a game,
- 0:38KT: Little wooden tops, and you spin them.
- 0:40Suze: And depending on what comes up on the top when
- 0:42Suze: it lands, you either win money, you, whatever it is.
- 0:46Suze: Every time she did it she won.
- 0:48KT: I won.
- 0:48Suze: I'm telling you she fixed it. I don't know how
- 0:50Suze: she did that, but it's impossible that that little top
- 0:54Suze: landed on winning every single time. But anyway, what else
- 0:59Suze: were you gonna say, KT?
- 1:00KT: I've been working the past few days, everyone, in our
- 1:03KT: storage unit here in Florida, and we'll tell you why
- 1:07KT: in a moment, but
- 1:08KT: I get a phone call yesterday. It's late in the afternoon,
- 1:12KT: Christmas Eve. Suze said, KT, come home, come home, I
- 1:16KT: miss you. I said, all right, I have to make
- 1:18KT: one stop at FedEx. I stopped at FedEx. I'm shipping
- 1:21KT: all these things, and the two guys I work with,
- 1:24KT: Rodney and Gavin, look at me and say, KT, you
- 1:26KT: don't look very happy. It's Christmas.
- 1:29KT: I said, you know what, boys, I don't even have
- 1:30KT: a tree yet. I don't have a Christmas tree. I
- 1:34KT: think I'll stop and get some clippings and put them
- 1:36KT: in a vase like Suze and I do all the
- 1:39KT: time and put lights on it and, and try to
- 1:42KT: make it a Merry Christmas. And they said, KT, forget
- 1:46KT: about it. It's already, you know, Christmas Eve, it's over. Anyway...
- 1:50Suze: Wait, before she goes on.
- 1:52Suze: On the island, because it's not easy to get Christmas
- 1:56Suze: trees on and off an island, we had this big tree,
- 2:00Suze: as all of you saw over all the years that
- 2:02Suze: was artificial, and that was that, right?
- 2:05KT: Colo and I would decorate it.
- 2:07Suze: As you also would see, but in Florida, which is
- 2:10Suze: where we are, we don't have that tree. And so therefore,
- 2:15Suze: go on, KT.
- 2:16KT: OK, so I said, all right, so I go home.
- 2:19KT: I get home.
- 2:20KT: And the door in the foyer of our condo is
- 2:23KT: closed and it smells delicious. It smells like mulling spices
- 2:29KT: and cloves and cinnamon, and, and Suze's greeting me at
- 2:32KT: the door, which is rare, and she said, KT, I'm
- 2:36KT: so glad you're home. I said, Susie, it smells delicious.
- 2:39KT: It smells like Christmas.
- 2:41KT: And she said, KT, Merry Christmas, and she opens the
- 2:45KT: door and there in front of me is a beautiful
- 2:50KT: live Christmas tree decorated with little baby lights, little crystals
- 2:56KT: hanging on, crystal ornaments and photographs all over the tree,
- 3:02KT: and I burst into tears. I was crying and crying,
- 3:06KT: and I told her how I was telling the boys
- 3:08KT: at FedEx I don't have a tree.
- 3:11KT: Anyway, Suze, when I was working all day, did this
- 3:15KT: by herself, a huge surprise...
- 3:19Suze: To both of us, I didn't know how to wrap
- 3:23Suze: lights on a tree because the one in the island,
- 3:26KT: Everything was automatic.
- 3:27Suze: Yeah, you opened up the things and there were the lights.
- 3:29Suze: I mean, it was quite something.
- 3:31KT: So Suze did this by herself. No one could believe
- 3:34KT: she put this all together. She had a stand. She
- 3:37KT: had a beautiful red satin...
- 3:39KT: Um, we'll have to send a picture to everyone. We'll send,
- 3:42KT: we'll post a photo tomorrow. We'll post it tomorrow.
- 3:45Suze: That was my...
- 3:47KT: Wait, can I tell them the photos? The photos on
- 3:50KT: the tree, everyone was significant and meaningful, and I'm not
- 3:56KT: gonna share the details, but she wrote a personal note
- 3:59KT: on the back of each photograph.
- 4:02KT: And I cried and cried and cried and I said
- 4:05KT: this is the best Christmas gift of all time and
- 4:10KT: the house smells like pine.
- 4:12Suze: I was so happy because I was able to give
- 4:15Suze: her something that she really, really wanted. So that's how
- 4:21Suze: Christmas started began.
- 4:22KT: That's how it began on Christmas Eve, which is really
- 4:26KT: the most significant night that we celebrate being Italians.
- 4:31Suze: You know, KT, I don't know if we ever even
- 4:33Suze: finished the beginning of this podcast, which is, Welcome everybody
- 4:37Suze: to the Women in Money podcast as well as everybody
- 4:39Suze: smart enough to listen. We just went straight into Christmas, KT,
- 4:44Suze: and maybe all of you noticed that the
- 4:47Suze: title of this podcast is There's Something I Want to
- 4:50Suze: Say to You Older Folks. And the truth of the
- 4:55Suze: matter is KT and I are older folks now. I'm
- 4:58Suze: going to be 75. KT's going to be 74. So
- 5:02Suze: many of you out there
- 5:04Suze: are older than us, are our same age, are 10
- 5:07Suze: years younger than us, and a few of you who
- 5:10Suze: are smart enough to listen are a lot younger than that.
- 5:14KT: Do you feel older? Do you feel like an older folk?
- 5:19Suze: It depends how my body feels, honestly.
- 5:22KT: How about your heart?
- 5:23Suze: Oh, my heart is as young, as young
- 5:26KT: And feisty
- 5:27Suze: and loving as possible.
- 5:29KT: We're having a honeymoon.
- 5:30Suze: Yeah, we are.
- 5:31KT: And what, what about, um, what about your head? How
- 5:35KT: you think?
- 5:36Suze: Oh, of course I think like a two year old.
- 5:38Suze: Are you kidding me? But, but there's a reason why
- 5:43Suze: I wanted to call this podcast that.
- 5:47Suze: Because when you get older, sometimes, no matter how much
- 5:52Suze: you love something,
- 5:55Suze: No matter what's going on in your life that you
- 5:58Suze: hope goes on forever.
- 6:01Suze: Sometimes there's a time that things just need to come
- 6:06Suze: to an end.
- 6:08KT: It's called change.
- 6:09Suze: And it's called change. And as many of you know,
- 6:14Suze: for the past 14 years, KT and I have lived
- 6:19Suze: on the most magnificent private island.
- 6:23Suze: In an extraordinary home that I built for KT from
- 6:27Suze: the ground up, I designed every aspect of that home
- 6:33Suze: to be called pure perfection for KT, and that was
- 6:38Suze: a gift. The island, truthfully, everybody was a gift to KT.
- 6:44Suze: We had Colo there as you know we had a
- 6:48Suze: dock we had a boat we had fishing equipment we
- 6:51Suze: had it all. The name of our home, our boat,
- 6:57Suze: even our everything around us is what KT?
- 7:01KT: Purnata.
- 7:02Suze: Tell everybody what Purnata means.
- 7:04KT: Purnata means perfection.
- 7:06Suze: And in actuality it was a perfect life, a perfect time,
- 7:13Suze: and we lived in pure perfection.
- 7:17Suze: All right, KT, you're on.
- 7:19KT: So after 14 years of living perfection, honestly, and loving
- 7:25KT: every minute except for hurricane season, loving every minute of
- 7:30KT: our experience together...
- 7:32Suze: The truth is we really loved hurricane season too.
- 7:35KT: You were petrified of hurricane.
- 7:37Suze: Yes, but I loved the wind. I love that doesn't
- 7:40Suze: mean I wasn't afraid, but I was.
- 7:41KT: She liked the Mother Nature. We never knew when she
- 7:44KT: was gonna deliver and what she was gonna deliver. So anyway,
- 7:48KT: we both looked at each other, and after all these years,
- 7:51KT: after over a decade of our life, we knew it
- 7:53KT: was time for change.
- 7:55KT: And as difficult as it might seem and as people
- 7:59KT: wonder like, well, why? Sometimes you just need change, everybody,
- 8:03KT: so we sold our island home and it just closed
- 8:08KT: last week with a lot of tears and a lot
- 8:12KT: of work to take all of your life and move.
- 8:17Suze: And which is why KT was in the storage unit
- 8:21Suze: where many of the things went, but Colo, everybody, and
- 8:25Suze: I know you're all wondering about, but what is Colo
- 8:29Suze: gonna do? Did he come with you? Is he living
- 8:31Suze: there with you? What about Colo?
- 8:33KT: Yeah, everyone doesn't care that we, we sold our home.
- 8:36KT: They're saying, Well, what'd you do with Colo?
- 8:38Suze: The truth of the matter is Colo is staying on
- 8:42Suze: the island that he actually has been on for over
- 8:45Suze: 20 some odd years now.
- 8:48Suze: And he's going to stay with the home. He loves
- 8:54Suze: the new owner. He loves the new owner's wife. It
- 8:58Suze: is so perfect for him, and you know what he
- 9:01Suze: loves more than anything?
- 9:03KT: His wife!
- 9:04Suze: His wife Annie is going to be with him.
- 9:07KT: And she's there now having Christmas with him, right? And
- 9:11KT: so he really doesn't miss us that much.
- 9:13Suze: No, but they're gonna work it out that they can
- 9:16Suze: have a life together as time goes on.
- 9:20Suze: And so Colo, I know that you're listening to this.
- 9:23Suze: You know we miss you. You know we love you.
- 9:28Suze: KT is now crying.
- 9:30KT: Colo, Susie got me a real tree, and I, I
- 9:33KT: wish you were here to decorate it with us.
- 9:36Suze: It's decorated. I did a great job.
- 9:38KT: I know, but Cola, we decorated our tree together for
- 9:41KT: so many years.
- 9:42Suze: All right, so while she's now crying, because obviously you
- 9:47Suze: can all imagine,
- 9:49Suze: what it's like leaving a home like that, but the
- 9:53Suze: truth of the matter is.
- 9:56Suze: That we're so happy now in our little condo, and
- 10:01Suze: what I love most about it, everybody, is that over
- 10:06Suze: the years.
- 10:07Suze: KT and I have owned many, many homes. At one point,
- 10:12Suze: not so long ago, we had five homes. We had
- 10:16Suze: a magnificent home in South Africa where I worked. We
- 10:20Suze: actually had two in in New York, one in the
- 10:24Suze: Plaza Hotel, everybody.
- 10:26KT: San Francisco
- 10:27Suze: San Francisco, magnificent.
- 10:31Suze: And the island, it was...
- 10:33KT: The island was like the cherry on top
- 10:36Suze: And the condo in Florida, which is where we are now,
- 10:40Suze: which we got in 2004 simply because my mother, who
- 10:46Suze: lived in Chicago, refused to move here unless KT and
- 10:51Suze: I moved here. So one day we went fine.
- 10:55KT: Tell them what we did. We, we called my sister
- 10:58KT: Lynn and said, find us a condo we can just
- 11:01KT: fly down and buy something on the beach, something small,
- 11:04KT: something easy. So she said, OK, we flew from New York. We,
- 11:09KT: we were working like every day doing shows and really busy.
- 11:13KT: We flew down early in the morning, got off the plane,
- 11:17KT: came and looked at with a realtor at a couple condos,
- 11:20KT: found this one, said, done.
- 11:22KT: Suze wrote a check, got back on the plane at lunchtime,
- 11:26KT: and went back to New York to work. That was
- 11:29KT: our little Florida condo, and that's why her mom decided
- 11:34KT: and agreed to move out of Chicago to Florida.
- 11:38Suze: And to our surprise, honestly.
- 11:41Suze: We fell in love with Florida.
- 11:42KT: We loved it here.
- 11:44Suze: We were in shock.
- 11:45KT: First of all, everything was easy driving here.
- 11:49Suze: We didn't need a driver here.
- 11:50KT: We didn't need a driver. We actually shipped our San
- 11:52KT: Francisco car here, so we had a car. Long story short,
- 11:58KT: we couldn't believe how easy it was to drive around
- 12:01KT: and park for all of you New Yorkers, you know
- 12:05KT: what it means to try
- 12:07KT: and park a car in New York City.
- 12:09Suze: But what was fascinating is we go out to eat sushi,
- 12:13Suze: $32 the exact same meal because we always order the
- 12:17Suze: same thing was like $200 in New York. So little
- 12:22Suze: by little we fell in love with it and we
- 12:25Suze: changed our residency from California to Florida because we now
- 12:30Suze: are in Florida all the time.
- 12:33Suze: And truthfully wanna hear something that was great...
- 12:36KT: It's warm.
- 12:36Suze: Besides that, what we saved on California income tax, paid
- 12:41Suze: for the condo outright the next year, so it was fabulous,
- 12:47Suze: everybody in every possible way and again, California is really
- 12:52Suze: where we lived most of the time, but not anymore
- 12:57Suze: as soon as we moved here.
- 13:00Suze: Then as time went on, just so you know our
- 13:03Suze: history of homes, because we were never in California anymore
- 13:08Suze: really because we loved it here so much, we sold
- 13:12Suze: the California residency
- 13:14KT: And the Suze Orman Show was always taped in New
- 13:17KT: York City.
- 13:18Suze: But we were never in New York long enough to
- 13:20Suze: become New York residents because we were Florida residents. So
- 13:26Suze: then as time went on.
- 13:29Suze: We ended the Suze Orman show in 2015.
- 13:33KT: So after Suze said, KT, we're gonna get rid of everything,
- 13:38KT: sold New York, sold California, sold South Africa, so here
- 13:41KT: we are in Florida, and Suze decides we need to travel, we,
- 13:47KT: we can't just stay in this little condo so she
- 13:49KT: buys a big yacht. And I think all of you
- 13:52KT: that know us know that we lived on.
- 13:55KT: A beautiful large asimut. We had a captain, a big yacht,
- 13:59KT: and we had it right here in the Florida condo
- 14:02KT: in a, um, a little marina that this condo has.
- 14:06KT: So everyone, we traveled all throughout the Bahamas loving our
- 14:10KT: life on a yacht, our little condo in Florida, and
- 14:13KT: when I say little, it's little, it's a little two
- 14:16KT: bedroom and one room is now her recording studio which
- 14:19KT: we're in right now. We love it.
- 14:21KT: And we lived on that yacht and then discovered our
- 14:25KT: little private island which then we bought land, built the home,
- 14:30KT: and that's what we've done, I guess, in the past
- 14:33KT: 25 years together. So now it's time for a new chapter.
- 14:39KT: It's 2025. It's our 25th anniversary. Suze's turning 75. It's the.
- 14:47KT: the perfect time for something different different new.
- 14:52Suze: However, the little boat that we had is over here
- 14:56Suze: as well in a little marina here, so life will
- 15:00Suze: go on in certain ways...
- 15:03KT: But we can't wait to explore again and travel.
- 15:07KT: We cannot wait to do that. We're, we're actually really
- 15:11KT: excited as much as you, my friends, everyone's saying, KT,
- 15:15KT: how can you leave your island? How can you and
- 15:18KT: Suze leave such a, an amazing one of a kind lifestyle?
- 15:23KT: And I said, you know what, it was just time.
- 15:26KT: And I keep using a metaphor that you'll all relate to.
- 15:30KT: Remember when you're in high school and it's time to
- 15:33KT: either go and get a job or go to college
- 15:36KT: or do whatever you're doing, but you left high school
- 15:39KT: and those friends that you grew up with for four
- 15:43KT: years and loved every minute of it and you're still
- 15:46KT: pretty
- 15:47KT: much single and it's time for something new that is
- 15:52KT: exciting but at the same time you're so sad to
- 15:54KT: leave what you knew and loved all those years. That's
- 15:58KT: what it feels like it's new and it's time.
- 16:01Suze: Yeah, and the reason why
- 16:04Suze: I wanted to call this podcast that there are things
- 16:08Suze: that I wanna say to you older folks, is that
- 16:13Suze: now that we've actually done this.
- 16:16Suze: I have to tell you, KT and I feel young again.
- 16:21KT: Honeymoon.
- 16:22Suze: Young in a different way, like we're gonna be forever young,
- 16:26Suze: and I finally, I know everybody's gonna think we're crazy.
- 16:31Suze: That I achieved a dream that I've always had.
- 16:36Suze: Do you remember what that dream is, KT?
- 16:39KT: It makes me laugh because it's kind of funny that you're,
- 16:42KT: she's setting it up like this romantic dream but wanna
- 16:45KT: hear what it really is?
- 16:47Suze: That if we, that if we had to.
- 16:51Suze: If we hadn't amassed everything that we have, and you
- 16:54Suze: can imagine it doesn't even matter, but if we were
- 16:57Suze: like just, just...
- 16:59KT: Just me and Suze, we can live on our Social
- 17:02KT: Security checks...
- 17:03Suze: In this little condo without because we don't own anything.
- 17:08KT: We have no expenses. We have no debt. We have
- 17:11KT: a free life.
- 17:13Suze: Are we gonna live like that? Are you crazy, everybody?
- 17:16Suze: There's a few luxuries that we are not going to
- 17:18Suze: give up. Trust me on that one.
- 17:21KT: But just the knowing that she can do that, being
- 17:24KT: the money lady, that means a great deal to Suze,
- 17:27KT: not to me, but to Suze.
- 17:29Suze: However, more than that.
- 17:33Suze: Both of us are so happy like yesterday and early
- 17:38Suze: this morning.
- 17:40Suze: I have to tell you when we were talking to
- 17:42Suze: KT's brother and we said we feel so young again,
- 17:45Suze: we feel so free, but here's the point of what
- 17:49Suze: I want to say to everybody out there.
- 17:52Suze: There comes this time when it makes sense, emotionally, physically,
- 17:58Suze: and financially to downsize. It just does, and we have
- 18:04Suze: significantly now downsized our life, and I mean significantly, and
- 18:09Suze: in the way that I tell all of you.
- 18:12Suze: And I've written in the Ultimate Retirement Guide for 50+
- 18:17Suze: that as you're getting older, those are the things that
- 18:21Suze: I want you to think about doing and actually doing
- 18:25Suze: and I want you to know that KT and I
- 18:29Suze: both follow the advice that I have been giving to
- 18:33Suze: all of you.
- 18:35Suze: And we've done that so that we can feel forever young,
- 18:41Suze: so that we can make the most out of every
- 18:44Suze: moment of the rest of our lives. And with that said,
- 18:49Suze: that brings us to the end of this podcast.
- 18:54Suze: I want to end this podcast,
- 18:57Suze: with an audio recording that was actually done on November 20th, 1960,
- 19:05Suze: 65 years ago on the Ed Sullivan Show.
- 19:13Suze: And it's from a woman by the name of Sophie Tucker.
- 19:17Suze: Now many of you are going to remember who she is.
- 19:21Suze: Many of you may never have even heard of her.
- 19:25Suze: But the title of it is There's Something I Want
- 19:28Suze: to say to you Older Folks. So with that, we
- 19:34Suze: wish you all a very merry Christmas, a very happy Christmas.
- 19:39Suze: We wish you all a life that you really feel
- 19:44Suze: forever young.
- 19:47Clip of Sophie Tucker: Something that I want to say to you older folks.
- 19:52Clip of Sophie Tucker: You young people, you can listen too.
- 19:56Clip of Sophie Tucker: Because what I'm going to say will someday apply to you.
- 20:02Clip of Sophie Tucker: I know that a lot of you older folks are
- 20:05Clip of Sophie Tucker: comfortably retired. You've no ties of any kind, and work
- 20:11Clip of Sophie Tucker: is no longer required.
- 20:14Clip of Sophie Tucker: So you're sitting around in idleness, each day becomes a bore.
- 20:20Clip of Sophie Tucker: And you're beginning to stop thinking.
- 20:23Clip of Sophie Tucker: That there's nothing worth living for.
- 20:26Clip of Sophie Tucker: You'd like to get into some little business, but you
- 20:29Clip of Sophie Tucker: feel you're too old to begin.
- 20:33Clip of Sophie Tucker: Well, I'm going to tell you about a business I'm
- 20:37Clip of Sophie Tucker: sure all of you can be in.
- 20:41Clip of Sophie Tucker: You be in the business of staying young.
- 20:46Clip of Sophie Tucker: Makes staying young a career.
- 20:49Clip of Sophie Tucker: Don't sit around and sigh and let the world pass
- 20:52Clip of Sophie Tucker: you by, but get with it. Stay with it as
- 20:56Clip of Sophie Tucker: long as you're here.
- 20:58Clip of Sophie Tucker: And don't be living in the past. You plan a future.
- 21:03Clip of Sophie Tucker: And looked forward to each added year.
- 21:06Clip of Sophie Tucker: I tell you there's no greater thrill, no greater satisfaction
- 21:11Clip of Sophie Tucker: when you can say, yes, I'm up in years, but
