- 0:08Speaker 1: use code HMA, Will Thomas tailgate talk SEC, as well
- 0:11Speaker 1: as a peek inside SEC football, joining us again to
- 0:14Speaker 1: talk a little Aggies football before we go too far
- 0:18Speaker 1: into this Kentucky game, they struggled for struggled, but that
- 0:23Speaker 1: may be the wrong word, but competitive first half against
- 0:26Speaker 1: Arizona state. And then they pulled away to where it
- 0:29Speaker 1: wasn't super competitive second half. What did they do? What
- 0:33Speaker 1: changed for them? Or was it just the athletes were
- 0:36Speaker 1: better for A & M and ASU just kind of
- 0:40Speaker 1: did all they could and getting to halftime that close
- 0:43Speaker 1: was kind of a blessing? Or what do you think
- 0:44Speaker 1: changed in that game to where the second half wasn't
- 0:47Speaker 1: as competitive?
- 0:49Speaker 2: I think Arizona State really did earn that game. They
- 0:52Speaker 2: earned how close it was. It wasn't really a fluky start. really,
- 0:54Speaker 2: it was kind of a fluky pull away by A
- 0:56Speaker 2: & M. It was two defensive touchdowns. Now, obviously, there
- 0:59Speaker 2: is skill in getting that pick six, getting that, I
- 1:01Speaker 2: don't know if it's a strip sack, but like out
- 1:02Speaker 2: of the pocket, Marco Jones houses it, but really just
- 1:05Speaker 2: those two defensive touchdowns by the Aggies, that's what separated it.
- 1:09Speaker 2: So when it was just offense for offense, ASU did
- 1:11Speaker 2: really earn that close game. That's not the fault of
- 1:13Speaker 2: the Aggies. ASU's a pretty solid team, but You just
- 1:15Speaker 2: kind of saw the athletes and the explosiveness, the opportunistic
- 1:18Speaker 2: nature of A & M' s defense is kind of what
- 1:21Speaker 2: took over. And that culminated in two defensive touchdowns to
- 1:24Speaker 2: really pull away at the very end there. And is
- 1:26Speaker 2: that a replicatable strategy? I'm not really sure if two
- 1:28Speaker 2: defensive TDs is something you can do week in and
- 1:30Speaker 2: week out. But the playmakers on A & M' s defense,
- 1:33Speaker 2: they really shined. This past weekend, I was a little worried.
- 1:36Speaker 2: I knew they portaled in really good pieces, but I
- 1:38Speaker 2: didn't know if they portaled in difference makers and playmakers
- 1:41Speaker 2: and leaders like that. But clearly, you know, Julio Humphrey,
- 1:43Speaker 2: Marco Jones, they stepped up. Those two TDs really made
- 1:46Speaker 2: that game look a lot more comfortable.
- 1:48Speaker 1: Do you, what are your thoughts on, we've obviously had
- 1:52Speaker 1: several conversations around Marcel Reed, if he's got a ceiling,
- 1:56Speaker 1: how well he's played, what kind of step he can take.
- 1:59Speaker 1: What have been your thoughts around him through two weeks?
- 2:02Speaker 2: I think he's been fine on his own, but you
- 2:04Speaker 2: look at A & M' s offensive metrics, they're actually 16th
- 2:07Speaker 2: in the country in scoring, which is fine. But if
- 2:09Speaker 2: you take out effectively what the defense can do to
- 2:11Speaker 2: help them out, they're 83rd in the country in passing,
- 2:14Speaker 2: 75th in rushing, 84th and third down, 131st in explosive plays.
- 2:19Speaker 2: So you're looking at that offense and you're not really
- 2:21Speaker 2: seeing a lot of actual production. You're not seeing a
- 2:23Speaker 2: whole lot of consistency and you're not seeing what is
- 2:26Speaker 2: a stacked receiver room that should be able to get downfield,
- 2:28Speaker 2: mainly Mario Craver. You're not really seeing them do that
- 2:31Speaker 2: right now. So I think most of the problems might
- 2:33Speaker 2: go back to the offensive line or they just not
- 2:35Speaker 2: being able to set all that up to allow the
- 2:37Speaker 2: offense to really get downfield, get explosive, get consistent. But
- 2:40Speaker 2: Marcel Reed himself hasn't necessarily had a bunch of issues,
- 2:43Speaker 2: but this offense as a whole, which will, fair or not,
- 2:46Speaker 2: fall on Marcel Reed in the national media, it's been
- 2:49Speaker 2: a little bit slow to start the year.
- 2:52Speaker 1: With this game against Kentucky coming up, you mentioned A
- 2:56Speaker 1: & M' s defense being opportunistic in the second half. First half,
- 3:00Speaker 1: Kentucky's defense was opportunistic against Bama and had them in
- 3:04Speaker 1: that game. But then Bama pulled away late. Obviously, A
- 3:10Speaker 1: & M is going to beat Kentucky from a skill
- 3:13Speaker 1: or talent perspective. But what are the things you're watching
- 3:16Speaker 1: for in this game? Have your thoughts on Kentucky changed
- 3:19Speaker 1: at all after seeing that second half against Bama? What's
- 3:23Speaker 1: your big picture kind of matchup idea for Kentucky versus
- 3:26Speaker 1: A & M?
- 3:28Speaker 2: I think for A & M' s defense, if they're able
- 3:30Speaker 2: to just contain C.J. Baxter, Javante Barnes running the ball,
- 3:33Speaker 2: they'll be good, right? Because in the first half of
- 3:35Speaker 2: that Kentucky vs. Bama game, where I still thought Kentucky
- 3:37Speaker 2: could be pretty dangerous, the running game was fine. And
- 3:40Speaker 2: then that led to passing options being a little bit open,
- 3:42Speaker 2: even though you still did see Mitchie get picked off.
- 3:44Speaker 2: When that running game got bottled up, Kentucky's offense literally
- 3:48Speaker 2: stopped scoring. They didn't push into the second half. So
- 3:50Speaker 2: for A & M' s defensive front, They might not be
- 3:52Speaker 2: quite as good as Bama's, but they're very close, at
- 3:55Speaker 2: least in terms of the athletic profile. They're still very good.
- 3:58Speaker 2: So if they're able to limit those two running backs
- 4:00Speaker 2: and then you make Kenny Minchie go pass heavy now
- 4:02Speaker 2: on the road in a loud environment as opposed to
- 4:05Speaker 2: trying to do it at home, that can get really,
- 4:07Speaker 2: really tough for the Wildcats offense, who does have some
- 4:09Speaker 2: decent weapons out wide, a good tight end, but they
- 4:12Speaker 2: clearly haven't put it all together yet like we saw
- 4:14Speaker 2: last week. So if they're able to just isolate Kentucky's offense,
- 4:17Speaker 2: make them one-dimensional, Don't allow C.J. Baxter, Javante Barnes, to
- 4:21Speaker 2: really get a full head of steam. If you force
- 4:23Speaker 2: Kenny Minchie behind the sticks to be passing it on
- 4:25Speaker 2: second and long, third and long, this secondary that we've
- 4:28Speaker 2: seen already make some plays, that pass rush that we
- 4:30Speaker 2: know can get after it, they're going to have a
- 4:32Speaker 2: pretty good day.
- 4:33Speaker 1: Do you feel like it's a situation for A &
- 4:36Speaker 1: M that it's just like, don't, you know, I, I
- 4:41Speaker 1: remember headlines in newspapers saying like, you know, this team
- 4:44Speaker 1: chokes on a cupcake. Like, is it, I don't want
- 4:47Speaker 1: to go so far as to say like Kentucky is
- 4:49Speaker 1: a cupcake, but when you're this big of a favorite,
- 4:51Speaker 1: when you're playing with a lot of advantages that a
- 4:54Speaker 1: animal have, is it really just about, Hey, let's just
- 4:57Speaker 1: get through this week. And then on to next week's LSU,
- 5:02Speaker 1: if I remember correctly, right? Like they, they, they, certainly
- 5:04Speaker 1: have a big one coming up, but is it, Hey,
- 5:07Speaker 1: let's just get through this week and not allow the
- 5:09Speaker 1: things that Kentucky did to stay in that Bama game
- 5:12Speaker 1: in the first half to happen to us. Or is
- 5:14Speaker 1: it now we're going to kind of flex some muscle
- 5:16Speaker 1: here and go get a big win because the rest
- 5:19Speaker 1: of the schedule is really tough. Hey guys, I'll get
- 5:21Speaker 1: right back to chatting with Will. But first I want
- 5:23Speaker 1: to ask you two things. One, if you're not already

- 5:59Speaker 1: for the support on the channel as we continue to

- 6:03Speaker 1: playoffs happen. We will certainly get there with you guys.
- 6:06Speaker 1: Appreciate that. Now back to Will.
- 6:09Speaker 2: I mean, as long as A & M doesn't beat themselves,
- 6:11Speaker 2: they'll be totally fine in this game. I think they
- 6:13Speaker 2: can easily roll to a three score win just by
- 6:16Speaker 2: kind of leaning on Kentucky, just like winning each quarter
- 6:19Speaker 2: by a touchdown. They won't like pop out to a
- 6:21Speaker 2: 24-0 lead in the first quarter, but I do think
- 6:23Speaker 2: that they're just better. They'll lean on them. They'll just
- 6:25Speaker 2: kind of slowly push them around. So As long as
- 6:27Speaker 2: you don't put the ball on the ground, as long
- 6:28Speaker 2: as you don't see Marcel Reed, you know, air mail
- 6:31Speaker 2: a guy to Ty Bryant back there in Kentucky's defensive backfield,
- 6:33Speaker 2: they'll be fine. They'll just keep on rolling. So I
- 6:35Speaker 2: think you can be pretty conservative, right? You don't need
- 6:37Speaker 2: to take a bunch of big risks. Just try and
- 6:39Speaker 2: establish what you want your offensive identity to be when
- 6:42Speaker 2: you get to SEC play, right? Because I went through
- 6:44Speaker 2: all those numbers. They're not really that good in either
- 6:47Speaker 2: throwing the ball or running the ball or on third down.
- 6:49Speaker 2: So whatever you want your identity to be. You need
- 6:51Speaker 2: to try and just stress that, focus on that, prove
- 6:54Speaker 2: to yourself that you can go do it in this
- 6:55Speaker 2: game because as long as you just do things smart,
- 6:58Speaker 2: you execute well, you'll be fine against Kentucky. So go
- 7:01Speaker 2: get done what you want to get done, what you
- 7:02Speaker 2: need to get done. The final score doesn't really matter because,
- 7:04Speaker 2: like you said, they should be able to take care
- 7:06Speaker 2: of Kentucky.
- 7:08Speaker 1: The things that made Kentucky's defense see success against Bama
- 7:13Speaker 1: in the first half, did those things have more to
- 7:15Speaker 1: do with– Kentucky playing well on defense, more to do
- 7:21Speaker 1: with Bama struggling offensively. Obviously the pick six, you know,
- 7:25Speaker 1: like the, the score for a touchdowns in there too.
- 7:27Speaker 1: But like, is that, is that something that Kentucky can
- 7:30Speaker 1: replicate to slow A & M down in this game?
- 7:33Speaker 1: Or do you think that was more on Bama's side?
- 7:37Speaker 2: I think it was a kind of a product of
- 7:39Speaker 2: the moment, right? Because that was probably the loudest that
- 7:41Speaker 2: Kroger field's been maybe ever. So then you had Keelan
- 7:44Speaker 2: Russell in his first road start. You had a running
- 7:46Speaker 2: game that really couldn't get going in the first half
- 7:48Speaker 2: for Bama. I think Kentucky's defense kind of had lightning
- 7:51Speaker 2: in a bottle there for those first 30 minutes. Because
- 7:53Speaker 2: if you played that game again, I don't think that
- 7:55Speaker 2: Bama turned the ball over three times and a half
- 7:58Speaker 2: ever again. So Kentucky's defense has good players. I mean,
- 8:00Speaker 2: the pick six was an awesome play. You have some
- 8:02Speaker 2: pretty good names there in the secondary. But I think
- 8:04Speaker 2: when you go on the road now, you're no longer
- 8:07Speaker 2: in front of your home crowd. Obviously, you're no longer
- 8:09Speaker 2: getting the upset chance at your home field. I think
- 8:12Speaker 2: that just that juice will be a little bit lower.
- 8:14Speaker 2: This will have good playmakers, right? Mike Christophe Grace, still
- 8:17Speaker 2: a good player regardless of where he's playing. I don't
- 8:19Speaker 2: think you're going to see the same havoc. I don't
- 8:21Speaker 2: think you'll see the same juice on that defense just
- 8:23Speaker 2: because of a product of their environment. That was a
- 8:25Speaker 2: Super Bowl game for Kentucky last week. This one just isn't.
- 8:29Speaker 2: So this will make some good plays, but I don't
- 8:31Speaker 2: really think they're going to be as explosive as opportunities
- 8:33Speaker 2: to force turnovers on Marcel Reed as they were against
- 8:36Speaker 2: Bama last weekend.
- 8:37Speaker 1: Right now, 16.5 points, A & M playing at home.
- 8:40Speaker 1: Do you like that? I mean, it is a big
- 8:44Speaker 1: number one way or the other, but do you like
- 8:46Speaker 1: them to cover a big number?
- 8:48Speaker 2: I do. I think A & M is going to
- 8:49Speaker 2: roll in this game. Kind of like what I said earlier,
- 8:50Speaker 2: just beat them by a score every quarter. I think
- 8:53Speaker 2: just kind of slowly lean on Kentucky. It'll be close
- 8:56Speaker 2: in the first half, but that's going to be a
- 8:57Speaker 2: part of how the game is going. I like A
- 8:58Speaker 2: & M to win this game by 21 or 24.
- 9:01Speaker 2: I'll just keep rolling. And yeah, like you said, get
- 9:02Speaker 2: ready for LSU next week.
- 9:04Speaker 1: Will Thomas, Tailgate Talk SEC, a peek inside SEC football.
