- 0:16what God is doing in US and in our community.
- 0:19The sermon you're about to listen to comes from our Spring
- 0:21Mixtape 2025 Non Series Sermon Series.
- 0:26Rather than a series, this will be a collection of sermons based
- 0:28on what God is leading us to preach on this spring.

- 0:42This morning Scripture comes from First Samuel chapter 13.
- 0:46There were no blacksmiths in the land of Israel in those days.
- 0:49The Philistines wouldn't allow them for fear they would make
- 0:52swords and Spears for the Hebrews.
- 0:54So whenever the Israelites needed to sharpen their
- 0:56plowshares, picks, axes, or sickles, they had to take them
- 0:59to a Philistine blacksmith. The charges were as follows, 1/4
- 1:03of an ounce of silver for sharpening A plowshare or a
- 1:06pick, and an eighth of an ounce for sharpening an axe or making
- 1:10the point of an ox code. So on the day of the battle,
- 1:13none of the people of Israel had a sword or spear, except for
- 1:16Saul and Jonathan. This is the word of God for the
- 1:21people of God. Amen.
- 1:25Thanks, Asher. Well, I have a practice of
- 1:30asking God each year to give me a, a word and a scripture
- 1:36passage to kind of become the interpretive filter, right?
- 1:41Kind of an advanced word for what that year is going to hold,
- 1:46or more specifically, what God is wanting to do in me over the
- 1:51course of that year, right? It helps me understand what
- 1:54God's doing in the midst of the different things that are
- 1:57happening around me and to me throughout that year.
- 2:01And so here are a few of the words that God has given me over
- 2:05the past few words. In 2021, it was be prepared.
- 2:12If you've ever seen The Lion King, all I could think of was
- 2:15Scar and those guys singing that song.
- 2:17Be prepared, right? Luckily it turned out a little
- 2:21better than that. And what I sensed God was maybe
- 2:25doing something new was that he brought us here, right?
- 2:28He brought us here. He took us from Trinity and
- 2:31Mullica Hill where we had been serving, and he brought us here
- 2:34to Collingswood. And that was definitely
- 2:37something I changed. We needed to be prepared for.
- 2:41Then the next year in 2022, the Word was rest and God gave me
- 2:48the Scripture. This wasn't about, you know,
- 2:50sitting back and taking vacations and taking naps and
- 2:54lounging about like that. The verse that God gave me came
- 2:58from Jeremiah 616 and said this is what the Lord says.
- 3:04Stand at the crossroads and look, ask for the ancient paths.
- 3:09Ask where the good way is and walk in it and you will find
- 3:16rest for your souls. This was a season over the the
- 3:212022 year that that God was inviting me into a deeper
- 3:25engagement with him and with the practices of the way of Jesus.
- 3:30For me personally it was an invitation to re engage some
- 3:34things that have kind of slipped by the wayside and to build some
- 3:38other things that were new for me into my rhythm of life.
- 3:42Things I hadn't been doing, but that idea of finding our rest in
- 3:47God. The next year, 2023, the Word
- 3:51was faithful. Faithful.
- 3:54If you remember 2023, that was the year where we had to make a
- 3:57lot of decisions about the future of our church.
- 4:00And in the midst of all of that, there wasn't really a whole lot
- 4:04I could do about the things happening in our denomination,
- 4:08the things happening in our conference.
- 4:10But God gave me the word faithful.
- 4:13And this verse from First Corinthians 4, he said, now it
- 4:16is required that those who have been given a trust must prove
- 4:21faithful. And it was just a word for me
- 4:23over the course of that whole year that no matter what was
- 4:25happening, what was going on, what God was asking of me was to
- 4:30be faithful with each little step.
- 4:33Just be faithful to what had been entrusted to me. 2024 we
- 4:40turned to the calendar, and my word changed from faithful to
- 4:44fight. I thought we were ready to go,
- 4:49you know, but God wanted to frame what that fight looked
- 4:54like for me. And so the verse he led me to
- 4:57was Ephesians 6, chapter 12, or Ephesians 6, verse 12, which
- 5:02says our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the
- 5:07rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this Dark
- 5:10World, and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly
- 5:14realm. I needed the reminder that there
- 5:17is an enemy out there, but it's not any any person, right?
- 5:24Our enemy that we fight against is the enemy of our souls.
- 5:29It gave me a lens through which to view the different
- 5:33interactions I had with people and situations that changed the
- 5:37way that I engaged in some of those different situations.
- 5:43Now my word for this year is forge, forge, FORGE.
- 5:51There aren't a lot of places in Scripture that talk about forges
- 5:55or blacksmiths. This one that we read this
- 5:59morning from First Samuel. But most of the other ones are
- 6:02from the prophets, and they deal with those blacksmiths, those
- 6:07Craftsman who fashioned idols in their hands that people then
- 6:11took and worshipped. But the verses that God gave me
- 6:15to go along with it weren't this one from First Samuel, although
- 6:19that one came along somewhere in the process.
- 6:22But the two verses that God gave me to interpret Zechariah 13
- 6:26Chapter 9, I keep doing that 13 verse 9, it says this third I
- 6:32will put into the fire. I will refine them like silver
- 6:35and test them like gold. They will call on my name and I
- 6:39will answer them. I will say they are my people
- 6:43and they will say the Lord is our God.
- 6:46And Malachi chapter 3, verse 2 to 4 says, But who can endure
- 6:53the day of his coming? Who can stand when he appears?
- 6:57For he will be like a refiner's fire and a launderer's soap.
- 7:01He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver.
- 7:05He will purify the Levites and refine them like gold and
- 7:08silver. Then the Lord will have men who
- 7:11will bring offerings in righteousness.
- 7:13And the offerings of Judah and Jerusalem will be acceptable to
- 7:17the Lord as in the days gone by, as in former years.
- 7:24These are passages that speak about fire and metal, but not in
- 7:29the sense of forging and shaping, in the in the sense of
- 7:32refining, right? And they speak about God's work
- 7:36among a remnant of people who who had remained faithful and
- 7:42who were willing to undergo that kind of process, that kind of
- 7:47refining process to make them into what God wanted them to be.
- 7:53And a promise that as that happened, as God worked that in
- 7:57them, he would make them into his people again.
- 8:03So this morning I want to dive a little bit more into this idea
- 8:08of forges and blacksmiths, even though I really have no actual
- 8:13expertise in all of this. I'm going to pretend like I do
- 8:17and tell you some things this morning.
- 8:19But at its most basic, a forge is both the workshop of a
- 8:25blacksmith, right? But then also specifically that
- 8:28furnace that plays a central role in the work that takes
- 8:32place in the blacksmith's workshop.
- 8:35And blacksmiths were once very common across not just America,
- 8:40but down through history. They were kind of a central
- 8:43point within a community where they created and repaired the
- 8:46tools that were essential to the life of the community, right?
- 8:50Whether that was for agriculture or for industry or even the
- 8:55weapons of war, right? And this this work was done by
- 9:00heating metal in that forge in order to make it shapeable, and
- 9:05then primarily by using a hammer and an anvil to form that metal
- 9:11into the desired shape so that it could accomplish its intended
- 9:16purpose. Now I want to add this image
- 9:21into our picture of what the church is and what it does,
- 9:26right? There are many different images
- 9:28that have been used to help people understand God's purpose
- 9:31for the church and how he wants to use it in His plan.
- 9:35And each one of those, like our mosaic of the atonement, we
- 9:38talked about in length, right? It helps us understand more
- 9:41fully the purpose of the local church.
- 9:44And so some people will speak about churches as hospitals,
- 9:48right? Places where for the healing of
- 9:53sin, sick souls. It's a hospital where people
- 9:55come to be healed. Others will talk about the local
- 9:59church as a nursery or a vineyard.
- 10:02It's a place where people can be planted and they can put down
- 10:05roots and be established and cultivate to the point where
- 10:09they bear fruit. Others think about the local
- 10:14church as a school, a place where people are trained and
- 10:20educated and then sent out to do that trade, to do that
- 10:24profession right. But this morning I want to add
- 10:28to that this image of the church as a forge, a place where God
- 10:33forms people using the heat, the pressure of experience and
- 10:40suffering to form people into tools that in God's hand he can
- 10:46use to build his Kingdom in the world.
- 10:51So let me bring us back to our our Scripture reading this
- 10:55morning from first Samuel 13, this passage, it comes right in
- 11:00the midst of a transitional period, a couple different
- 11:03transitions happening. One is God is transitioning
- 11:07Israel from a nation that's ruled by judges, right?
- 11:11People he raised up to deliver the people for a certain reason.
- 11:16And then for a season of time, they would rule over the people.
- 11:20He was transitioning from those judges to a monarchy, right to a
- 11:26Kingdom, beginning with King Saul.
- 11:29You might remember that story. We talked about it last fall a
- 11:32little bit as we were looking at David's life.
- 11:35But it was a transition not just of government, but of self
- 11:40identity, right? As the people began to to shift
- 11:43their mindset from relating primarily to their tribe of
- 11:48people and the tribe that they were a part of to being part of
- 11:52the nation of Israel, right? This was part of why they wanted
- 11:56a king. And they were so anxious to have
- 11:58a king like the other nations, somebody that they could rally
- 12:02behind and who could unite the tribes.
- 12:06They were moving from this loose confederation of tribes into
- 12:09really developing a national identity as the people of
- 12:13Israel. But this was also a time of, of
- 12:17technological transition, right? People throughout the ancient
- 12:21Near East at that time, they were moving out of the Bronze
- 12:25Age and into the Iron Age, which meant the development of
- 12:29stronger, harder, sharper tools and weapons, right?
- 12:36And as we've seen throughout history, those who control the
- 12:40technology are able to maintain power.
- 12:46And so in First Samuel 13, we're told that during this time of of
- 12:52transition and upheaval and newness, there were no
- 12:58blacksmiths in Israel. You see, this was a strategic
- 13:03position taken by the Philistines, Israel's more
- 13:08powerful neighbor and enemy. The Philistines wouldn't permit
- 13:14the Israelites to have blacksmiths and forges because
- 13:18they wanted to control what kind of tools were being produced.
- 13:21And specifically, they wanted to restrict the availability of
- 13:24weapons in Israel. So the Israelites, if they
- 13:30needed to have their farm tools sharpen their sickles and their
- 13:34picks and their axes and all those things that Asher read for
- 13:38us, they had to go down to the Philistines to have those things
- 13:42sharpened. It's to such an extent that
- 13:46we're told at the end of the passage that only King Saul and
- 13:50his son Jonathan had swords. Can you imagine?
- 13:59To reframe it just a little bit, to think about David and Goliath
- 14:04for just a second, we tend to be pretty hard on those soldiers
- 14:10who are lined up there with King Saul.
- 14:11No one being willing to go out and face Goliath changes it a
- 14:18little bit. If you think they're going out
- 14:20there with sickles and pruning hooks, shovels, picks, they're
- 14:27not going out there with swords and Spears.
- 14:28They didn't have those things. Only King Saul and his son
- 14:35Jonathan had swords. The Israelites had to go to the
- 14:39Philistines for any work they needed done.
- 14:42And I think there's a spiritual analogy here that I want to take
- 14:45some time to develop this morning.
- 14:48And in in the midst of our consumerist approach to church,
- 14:53right, where we look for a church where we like the worship
- 14:57and we like the preaching and we like the programs that are
- 15:02offered. And if they, the church doesn't
- 15:04have those things and we'll leave that church and we'll go
- 15:07look for another church that does.
- 15:10In the midst of that kind of context, I think we've given up
- 15:14as the church the responsibility of forming people, and instead
- 15:24we've outsourced that work to the Philistines, to the culture
- 15:29all around us. We look to our culture and allow
- 15:33the culture to be the one that shapes our values and our
- 15:36practices and our way of living. And I wonder, where are the
- 15:47churches that would operate as a forge?
- 15:56Where are the churches that would operate as a forge?
- 16:00Living in this world provides plenty of heat in our lives,
- 16:04right? And just like metal, if you
- 16:06don't know too much about metallurgy.
- 16:08And I learned this all this week.
- 16:10So we're good. We're I'm, I'm just sharing the
- 16:13little bit of bread that I found with you.
- 16:15All that heat, the heat of life, can either make us brittle or it
- 16:22can make us stronger, right? Metal is made stronger through a
- 16:27process called tempering. The blacksmith heats up the
- 16:31metal till it gets nice and hot. It'll bring it out and hammer it
- 16:34out and fold it back on itself and plunge it into the water and
- 16:38it cools rapidly, right? And in that process the metal,
- 16:44the iron, gets stronger. Where are the churches that are
- 16:52offering that kind of cooling water so that people can come in
- 16:56from the heat of life and be tempered and made stronger?
- 17:05Are we a place of relief from the fires of life where people
- 17:11can get stronger before they're thrust back into it all?
- 17:17If we continue this analogy, if we see God, then as the
- 17:21blacksmith, he's the one hammering us into shape.
- 17:30Where are the churches? Where are the churches that'll
- 17:35provide an anvil for God to hammer against?
- 17:43I think that Anvil is community, all right?
- 17:47Whether we realize it or not, we are constantly being formed by
- 17:52our environment, by the stories we're being told, by the habits
- 17:57we practice, by the relationships that we're part
- 18:00of, right? And this all happens over the
- 18:02course of time and through the experiences we have as we move
- 18:06through life. This is the process of formation
- 18:09that happens when we don't even realize that we're being formed.
- 18:14But the church, the church is called to be a community of
- 18:18intentional formation, right? Where the Holy Spirit is forming
- 18:24us by, by biblical truth, by spiritual practices, and by
- 18:30community, right? And this again, it happens over
- 18:34time. We don't just wake up 1 morning
- 18:36and we're suddenly transformed, at least not most of us.
- 18:39It happens over time, and often it happens as we learn to
- 18:45suffer. I don't want to get too literal
- 18:50with my analogy here, but I want to push it just a bit further.
- 18:55Here's how I envision the church operating as a forge.
- 19:00God. The Holy Spirit is the
- 19:04blacksmith, right? Who wants to shape us into
- 19:07something useful for building his Kingdom And the experiences
- 19:13that the suffering of life are that heat and that fire, right?
- 19:16That that heat in the fire that just kind of stays constantly on
- 19:20in that furnace. Has anyone ever ever actually
- 19:23gotten to a place where you don't feel the fire of life on
- 19:28some level, on some aspect of you?
- 19:32I mean, it just it's there, right?
- 19:33But there are sometimes right where where the blacksmith says
- 19:38to do what we need to do. We got to make this hotter,
- 19:41right? And so pump those bellows and,
- 19:43and the fire gets hotter. And when that fire gets hotter,
- 19:49it, it either makes us malleable, shapeable, moldable,
- 19:54or it makes us brittle and actually weaker depending on
- 19:59whether we're in the care of the blacksmith or not.
- 20:04And in that forge, that workshop.
- 20:07Where God is working on us, the Holy Spirit, He pulls us out of
- 20:11those fires of life and He shapes us with His word, with
- 20:16His truth as the hammer of spiritual forces, spiritual
- 20:21print practices shape us and mold us over time.
- 20:28He does that as we learn to apply the truth, He'll bring
- 20:32that and He'll hammer us with that.
- 20:38I'm assuming most of you have never actually tried
- 20:41blacksmithing. Maybe I I hear there's ATV show
- 20:44where people compete in some blacksmithing things.
- 20:47Maybe you've seen that before, but but have you ever tried to
- 20:50hammer a nail into a board show of hands?
- 20:55All right, most of you have at least tried to do that.
- 20:57Maybe some of you have actually succeeded.
- 20:59Good job. But if you ever tried to hammer
- 21:02a nail into a board while you're just holding onto the board,
- 21:07right? You've got the nail in there,
- 21:08you're just holding and you try to hammer it in.
- 21:11How well does that work? Not very well, because what do
- 21:15you need? You need a force on the other
- 21:18side of it, right? You need pressure on the other
- 21:21side of it. It's the same with with
- 21:25blacksmithing, right? If you're holding that hot piece
- 21:28of metal and just trying to hammer it, you're going to shape
- 21:31it some. But is it going to be shaped
- 21:35into the way you want it to be? Not really.
- 21:38If you really want to shape that piece of hot metal, if you want
- 21:42to be effective, you need an anvil to hammer against.
- 21:49I believe in the church, that anvil is community.
- 21:55Community, right? God's doing this work on us and
- 21:58we need community to help us be formed.
- 22:02And I don't want to be too generic here.
- 22:04When I'm speaking about community, I'm not talking about
- 22:08your car club or your pickleball community or your gardening
- 22:12community or your book club or anything like that.
- 22:15It's not that I'm against those things, but those kind of
- 22:19affinity groups, they're not bad.
- 22:21They're just not going to form us into the way of Jesus, right?
- 22:26That's not generally why they exist.
- 22:28It's not their purpose. It's not what brings them
- 22:31together. But I'm also not talking just
- 22:38about the people seated in the pews nearby to you, the people
- 22:43we worship with on Sunday mornings or, or your Sunday
- 22:47school class or your Bible study, sometimes even even our
- 22:50life groups, right? Again, those are good things.
- 22:54They're important relationships we need to have.
- 22:58I'm not saying there's just one specific kind of community that
- 23:01we need. There are different levels to
- 23:04it, different layers to, and those other things can play a
- 23:06part in that. But what I am talking about and
- 23:10what I think is vitally important to our being formed by
- 23:14the Spirit is a small, intentional community in which
- 23:19you can work out what God is doing in your life, where you
- 23:26can be honest and vulnerable and there's acceptance and
- 23:30accountability and love and forgiveness can be offered.
- 23:37What I have in mind is what our Methodist family has called a
- 23:41discipleship band. It's a group of three to five
- 23:44people of the same gender, men with men, women with women, who
- 23:49meet together regularly, ideally weekly, in order to answer
- 23:54questions like this. How is your soul?
- 24:02You know, a lot of times we'll walk up to people and church,
- 24:04say, hey, how you doing? How often do you hear somebody
- 24:07say, how's your soul? Where in your life are you
- 24:11seeing struggles? Where are you experiencing
- 24:14success? Where's God helping you?
- 24:17How's God speaking to you this week through his Word and
- 24:22through his Spirit? Is there any sin you need to
- 24:28commit, not commit? Is there any sin you need to
- 24:31confess? Who?
- 24:37Jeremy? Maybe you should take it from
- 24:38here on out. Is there any sin you have
- 24:42committed you need to confess? And are there any secrets that
- 24:49you want to share that we can help carry with you?
- 24:52And then pray together and ask God to help.
- 24:56And then you pray for those things through the week.
- 24:58They're deep questions. They're real questions.
- 25:03They're intentional but not impossible questions.
- 25:09They're the kind of questions that cooperate with the work
- 25:12that God is doing to form us into tools in his hand, the kind
- 25:18of community that can act as that anvil against which the
- 25:24blacksmith can shape us, the anvil that makes the hammering
- 25:30and the work more effective. In JRR Tolkien's masterpiece The
- 25:39Lord of the Rings, we're told of a series of rings of power that
- 25:45were created for each of the major races in the fictional
- 25:50world that Tolkien created. There were men and elves and
- 25:53dwarves and orcs and all kinds of other things, but these rings
- 25:57were made for men and elves and dwarfs.
- 25:59And we're told that unknown to the recipients of those rings,
- 26:03there was another ring that was formed, forged secretly in the
- 26:09fires of Mount Doom to rule over those other rings and their
- 26:15wearers. If you've already started to
- 26:22make the connection to sin, I don't think you're far off.
- 26:29And this one ring could only be destroyed in those same fires in
- 26:35which it was created, where it was forged.
- 26:41But throughout this saga, we also see a community being
- 26:48forged, right? It's described in the first in
- 26:51the title of the first book as the Fellowship of the Ring.
- 26:55People from these diverse backgrounds, even different
- 26:58races, who who came together around a common mission to
- 27:03destroy this ring. And over the course of the
- 27:07story, the Fellowship ends up getting split up and divided.
- 27:12But we see 2 examples of the kind of committed, intentional
- 27:17community that I'm talking about here that that stick through the
- 27:20whole story. We see Frodo and Sam, two
- 27:25hobbits whose lives have been marked by comfort, right?
- 27:29They live in the Shire, where everything is green, and they
- 27:31have these nice little Hobbit holes and they smoke their pipes
- 27:35and they eat second breakfast, which, who wants to add that to
- 27:39their rule of life here, right? Second breakfast.
- 27:43I'm for it. And these hobbits, they they get
- 27:48swept up into this grand mission, and over the course of
- 27:54the story, they become the kind of friends who can carry one
- 27:57another in the most difficult places and situations of life.
- 28:05But we also see Aragorn and Legolas and Gimli, an elf, a man
- 28:13or a man, an elf and a dwarf who couldn't be more different from
- 28:19one another, but who, because of their commitment to the mission,
- 28:23their commitment to seeing this ring destroyed, they determined
- 28:27that they're going to stand shoulder to shoulder with one
- 28:31another through the journey, through the battles, through
- 28:36whatever may come. And without those relationships,
- 28:44without those little bands, those spiritual friends, this
- 28:49mission would have failed. They never would have been able
- 28:53to destroy the ring. And these characters, along with
- 28:56everything and everyone they loved, would have been plunged
- 29:00into the shadow of evil. We need those kinds of
- 29:08relationships, we need those kinds of friendships if we are
- 29:13going to accomplish all that God has asked of us to do.
- 29:18And we understand like the big mission, but each of us have a
- 29:23specific role that God has called us to play in that
- 29:27mission. And friends, we too are in a
- 29:31battle, right? But even in the midst of the
- 29:34battle, God's not forming us into weapons of war, right?
- 29:39The weapons used in this battle aren't people.
- 29:44The weapons used in this battle are our prayer and the word of
- 29:48God. And, and these things as, as God
- 29:51forms us, he's looking beyond the battle, He's looking to the
- 29:56reality that he has already won the war and he's in the business
- 30:01of building his Kingdom. And so we're not being formed
- 30:05into swords, we're being formed into things like plows.
- 30:11We're not being shaped into Spears.
- 30:14We're being shaped into pruning hooks and Siths to be able to
- 30:22harvest the fruit. And I believe God is calling us
- 30:26as a church to become a forge again, to become a workshop
- 30:31where God can pull us out of the fires of life, to strengthen us
- 30:36and to shape us into the kind of people who can build His Kingdom
- 30:41with him. We're going to talk about bands
- 30:47more in the weeks and months to come because I believe God wants
- 30:50to form us into Kingdom building tools.
- 30:54And he can do that most effectively in the midst of that
- 30:58kind of intentional community today.
- 31:01I just want to plant that seed in your mind.
- 31:04I want to get you thinking about how God is forming you and who
- 31:10he's using to do that. Who is part of your fellowship
- 31:16that is working with you, standing shoulder to shoulder
- 31:19with you to accomplish the mission that God has called you
- 31:22to? Who needs to be a part of it?
- 31:28Because, friends, none of us can do it on our own.
- 31:32We'll never make it. We'll never make it.
- 31:38So I encourage you to carry these thoughts this morning, to
- 31:43hold on to them, to ask God to continue to speak to you as we
- 31:49engage another aspect of God's shaping work in us, the
- 31:54sacrament of Holy Communion, whereby God pours His grace into
- 32:00our lives as we identify as his people, as we celebrate what God
- 32:08has done to accomplish the victory that's already been
- 32:15secured.
