- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Amharic with Fexingo. I'm Lucas, and alongside me is the wonderful Luna. Luna: Hey everyone! So ready to learn some more Amharic. Last episode we covered wanting and having, right? Lucas: Exactly. መፈለግ and መኖር. But today, we're diving into two verbs that are perfect for us, actually. Luna: Oh, I love that. Something about our show? Lucas: Yep. We're going to learn how to say 'to learn' and 'to teach' in Amharic. The verb for 'to learn' is መማር. Luna: መማር. Okay, that's the infinitive. But how do I say 'I learn'? Lucas: Great question. 'I learn' is እማራለሁ. Let's break it down: እማራለሁ. Luna: እማራለሁ. Hmm. እማራለሁ. So if I want to say 'I learn Amharic', I'd say አማርኛ እማራለሁ? Lucas: Perfect. አማርኛ እማራለሁ. You've got it. Let's hear it again. Luna: አማርኛ እማራለሁ. I love that. So I'm literally saying 'Amharic I learn'. Lucas: That's right. Word order in Amharic is subject object verb, so the object comes before the verb. Now, the other verb we're learning today is 'to teach': ማስተማር. Luna: ማስተማር. That's a bit longer. How do I conjugate it? Lucas: 'I teach' is አስተምራለሁ. Say it with me: አስተምራለሁ. Luna: አስተምራለሁ. Okay, I can do that. So 'I teach English' would be እንግሊዝኛ አስተምራለሁ? Lucas: Exactly. እንግሊዝኛ አስተምራለሁ. You're a natural. Luna: Aww. Thanks. You know, if Fexingo has been helping you make actual progress with Amharic, it's because of listeners like you. A couple of dollars a month at buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo genuinely keeps these going — it's what lets us keep making episodes ad-free. Lucas: Yeah, it really does make a difference. Every little bit helps us keep the lights on and the language flowing. So if you've gotten something out of the show, consider it. Luna: Alright, back to learning. So አስተምራለሁ is 'I teach'. But how do I ask someone 'Do you teach Amharic?'? Lucas: Good question. 'Do you teach Amharic?' is አማርኛ ታስተምራለህ? Luna: አማርኛ ታስተምራለህ? Let me try that: አማርኛ ታስተምራለህ? Lucas: Perfect. And if someone asks you that, you can say አዎ, አማርኛ አስተምራለሁ. 'Yes, I teach Amharic.' Luna: አዎ, አማርኛ አስተምራለሁ. That feels good to say. Okay, let's practice all four in a little scene. Say I meet you and I say I'm learning Amharic. Lucas: Alright. So you'd say አማርኛ እማራለሁ. Luna: አማርኛ እማራለሁ. And I could ask you አማርኛ ታስተምራለህ? meaning 'Do you teach Amharic?' Lucas: Exactly. And I'd reply አዎ, አማርኛ አስተምራለሁ. Luna: That's such a natural exchange. So let's run through all the phrases one more time. The verb for 'to learn' is መማር. Lucas: And 'to teach' is ማስተማር. Luna: I learn Amharic: አማርኛ እማራለሁ. Lucas: I teach English: እንግሊዝኛ አስተምራለሁ. Luna: And 'Do you teach Amharic?' is አማርኛ ታስተምራለህ? Lucas: Fantastic. You've got them all. Now you can talk about learning and teaching in Amharic. Practice these with your friends or by yourself. Luna: We'll be back next time with more Amharic. Until then, keep practicing! ደህና ሁኑ. Lucas: That's 'stay well'. See you next time on Learn Amharic with Fexingo.
