- 0:39SPEAKER_02: Welcome in, everybody, to the Talk and Tech Podcast, powered by Guns Up Nation, part of the Guns Up Nation Podcast Network.
- 0:45SPEAKER_02: I am your host, Steven Rodriguez, my co-host Tristan McGonigal.
- 0:48SPEAKER_02: Tristan, how are you doing today, man?
- 0:50SPEAKER_01: Doing well.
- 0:51SPEAKER_01: It's that time where we're gonna have to be seeing who pulls the trigger on Christmas early or not.
- 0:56SPEAKER_01: We are officially here in November, and that means basketball is around the corner.
- 1:01SPEAKER_02: Yes, it's so close, and it couldn't have come at a better time.
- 1:06SPEAKER_02: Uh, we're still in hot pursuit of the next Texas Tech head football coach, and we will talk to y'all about that today.
- 1:13SPEAKER_02: Um, we also got some other sports we're gonna break down, maybe a little basketball stuff, and then we got some fun questions there at the end just to kind of take us into the bye week, all nice and smooth.
- 1:23SPEAKER_02: We're not gonna be disappointed this weekend.
- 1:25SPEAKER_02: That's the good part of all of this, having a bye week and everything.
- 1:29SPEAKER_02: But uh man, you know, the OU game sucked.
- 1:32SPEAKER_02: Uh, it was awful in all aspects.
- 1:35SPEAKER_02: Uh, and then we get the news uh yesterday, Halloween, of course, that uh our boy Jeff Trailer uh extended by UTSA a 10-year, 28 million dollar deal.
- 1:48SPEAKER_02: Um, and that, you know, it hurt me a little bit.
- 1:51SPEAKER_02: I was very down uh talking about it yesterday.
- 1:55SPEAKER_02: Um, because I really wanted Jeff Trailer for Texas Tech.
- 1:58SPEAKER_02: I thought he was the guy, I thought that's who we were gonna go all in on.
- 2:02SPEAKER_02: And it ended up not being the case.
- 2:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it was I was really disappointed as well.
- 2:08SPEAKER_01: In my mind, I was trying to lie to myself, saying no, there's still a way to get him.
- 2:13SPEAKER_01: And I mean, I don't think he's entirely off the table.
- 2:16SPEAKER_01: It's just at this point, it's true.
- 2:18SPEAKER_01: Really got to bring the dump truck full of bags to to San Antonio to get him at this point because San Antonio is really buckering up and paying the man.
- 2:28SPEAKER_01: Uh, and they signed him to a 10-year deal, and that just it looks like UTSA is really out to cover their bases, good for them.
- 2:34SPEAKER_01: Because no matter what, uh, if someone's wants to hire Jeff Trailer, say Texas Tech, they are absolutely paying for UTSA's next coach tenfold.
- 2:44SPEAKER_01: So it's a really great plan by them.
- 2:47SPEAKER_01: Huge prompts to the roadrunners, it was the right thing to do.
- 2:49SPEAKER_01: You have a treasure trove of a coach that can really build a future there, especially with the new conference coming up, uh, and all that, so they can really make their their wake in a new frontier.
- 2:59SPEAKER_01: Uh, but really disappointing for us.
- 3:01SPEAKER_01: I but I do think it does help narrow the coaching search for us, it either narrows it or it opens it up a bit.
- 3:07SPEAKER_01: I'm not quite sure.
- 3:08SPEAKER_01: Uh, because I mean, right now it's definitely hashtag hire mcuire that is that is sweeping the interwebs right now.
- 3:15SPEAKER_01: So it's it's hard to know right now, but I feel like Sonny Dykes has to be target number one at this point.
- 3:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think so.
- 3:21SPEAKER_02: Uh the the trailer news was so it was because I was so in on it, and I was like, this is our guy.
- 3:28SPEAKER_01: I had yeah, my hill's happening.
- 3:30SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I was like, We're we're ready.
- 3:32SPEAKER_02: We're and then I saw a tweet that was like, okay, Jeff trailer's coming on, he's gonna have Joey Maguire as defensive coordinator, he's gonna keep Sonny Cumby on, and I was all in on that.
- 3:40SPEAKER_02: I was like, this is the best, this is the best thing I could wish for right now.
- 3:44SPEAKER_02: And of course, uh life doesn't give you what you want, especially when it comes to Texas Tech football.
- 3:50SPEAKER_02: Um, he he has a$7.5 million buyout.
- 3:53SPEAKER_02: That's I mean, you know, yeah, when you're when you're thinking about the numbers, we paid Matt Wells about three million a year.
- 3:59SPEAKER_02: The next head coach, apparently, Texas Tech is willing to go all in, pay a little more money to the coordinators, and then even up the head coaching price to probably, you know, up to upwards of probably about five to six million, probably not six, but about four to five million dollars a year for just the head coach.
- 4:17SPEAKER_02: And you think about them potentially paying the 7.5 million on top of potentially four million a year for Jeff Trailer, and then you have to pay his coordinators on top of that.
- 4:27SPEAKER_02: That's probably just not gonna happen.
- 4:29SPEAKER_01: Um, yeah, that's just probably sucking the bags dry.
- 4:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no doubt.
- 4:33SPEAKER_02: And so uh, you know, I think we can kind of count Jeff Trailer out, and I I'm mad about it, but I'm also not because good for UTSA, good for them locking down a coach that they believe in that has brought them to new heights.
- 4:45SPEAKER_02: It's good for college football for the lower programs to keep their guys, you know, and they just don't get sucked in by higher programs and all that kind of stuff.
- 4:53SPEAKER_02: Uh, and and you know, we're biased because we're from San Antonio, we always root for the hometown team, but uh, you know, it still stinks because I think he would have been really successful at tech.
- 5:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it just seems like a really natural fit.
- 5:05SPEAKER_01: And y'all, Steven is doing a multitask right now, he is wrangling a wiener dog with a with a cone on his head in his lap and trying to talk.
- 5:13SPEAKER_01: He's like doing this weird matrix crap with his mic, trying to dodge the dog and all that while he's talking.
- 5:18SPEAKER_02: So I'm sorry, I'm sorry if I'm making noise.
- 5:21SPEAKER_02: This dog, I he was great all day, and then all of a sudden, right when we start to record, he goes nuts.
- 5:27SPEAKER_02: Uh, he just got fixed, so he is in the cone.
- 5:31SPEAKER_02: I have to keep him from jumping.
- 5:32SPEAKER_02: It's a whole mess right now.
- 5:34SPEAKER_01: Here, yeah.
- 5:35SPEAKER_01: Uh uh back back to the real talk.
- 5:37SPEAKER_01: This isn't talking wieners, but uh um uh I like that you brought up the salary of Matt Wells and stuff.
- 5:44SPEAKER_01: I don't think he represents the the maximum for Texas Tech and how much they're going they they're gonna pay a coach because I don't think Matt Wells was exactly a commodity that signaled bring bring big money to hire me.
- 5:59SPEAKER_01: I don't think really anyone else was going after him, so it's kind of just a situation of why would you need to pay even more than 3.5 million is still an unthinkable amount of money for your average person, but uh it's you don't want to need to pay him more than you'd have to.
- 6:14SPEAKER_01: But I with the guys we're talking about now, we're definitely gonna have to take a step up.
- 6:18SPEAKER_01: Like Sonny Dykes, I think it's gonna take an expensive contract to get him over here, and you know, uh, after UTSA making the move they did, I'm sure SMU is gonna be trying to start talks with Sonny Dykes now before uh Texas Tech can start really throwing some uh really enticing offers at him.
- 6:34SPEAKER_01: So I I hope we're ahead of that.
- 6:36SPEAKER_01: I hope we're ahead of that curve.
- 6:37SPEAKER_01: I hope we're talking to Sonny's agent already.
- 6:40SPEAKER_01: Um and I I think the way that the good things to look at this with between trailer and Dykes is I think Dykes is probably though trailer seemed like a great fit for it, but Dykes really would probably be more inclined to come to Texas Tech because of the the connection in the alumni and all that.
- 6:57SPEAKER_01: I but man, I'm with you.
- 6:59SPEAKER_01: It's just it's hard to not be disappointed.
- 7:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and it's it's like Dykes would be good.
- 7:06SPEAKER_02: I I we said it on last week's pod that Dykes would be a fine hire, he's just not an exciting hire necessarily.
- 7:14SPEAKER_02: I mean, some people get excited by the Dykes name, but you see his resume, and you're like, okay, he sucked the cal.
- 7:20SPEAKER_02: He uh, you know, he's at SMU, he's doing well, but then of course, SMU loses to Houston this week, and then you're like, okay, what the heck?
- 7:28SPEAKER_02: You know, we're trying to get hype for a guy, and then he loses to a team that we just beat with Matt Wells, and it's like, uh, so that brings you down a little bit, but uh, there's definitely other options past these two.
- 7:40SPEAKER_02: I'm not like a hundred percent if we don't get dikes, it's a bust, you know, right?
- 7:44SPEAKER_02: Like there's a lot of good options.
- 7:46SPEAKER_02: We joined on the Twitter sphere today, the higher Maguire hashtag going around.
- 7:51SPEAKER_02: Uh, you know, it's it's fun because it's a guy that I think is is just like Jeff Trailer in terms of you know, background, you know, high school coach, great high school coach for a lot of years.
- 8:03SPEAKER_02: Uh finally moves up the ranks, been a part of two different regimes at Baylor that have completely turned around after losing a head coach.
- 8:11SPEAKER_02: Uh, there's a lot of good that comes with Joey Maguire, except the experience, you know, and that's the only thing that's a that's a downfall, really.
- 8:19SPEAKER_02: And if you could call it a downfall, it's more of just an unknown.
- 8:22SPEAKER_02: And so I there's there's things about every single one of these candidates that you're that you could put as a negative and put as a positive, you know, it's just how you look at it.
- 8:33SPEAKER_02: And I, you know, what really gets me is tech Twitter thinking that their guy is 100% the perfect choice.
- 8:40SPEAKER_02: It's like, guys, we don't freaking know.
- 8:42SPEAKER_02: Honestly, we hire we could hire Jeff Trailer and he could do really bad or he could do really good here.
- 8:47SPEAKER_02: And I I you know, I'm not gonna be surprised by either one.
- 8:50SPEAKER_02: Same with Sonny Dykes, same with Joey Maguire, same with all these guys.
- 8:54SPEAKER_02: So I wouldn't be so sure about any of these candidates.
- 8:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's a great point, man.
- 9:00SPEAKER_01: And obviously, hiring a coach brings in risk.
- 9:03SPEAKER_01: You you you don't necessarily know what the results are gonna be, but you like seeing the coach provide uh results to believe that he's gonna do the same thing in tech two, and that's what makes Joey McGuire uh a much riskier hire.
- 9:17SPEAKER_01: Uh because, like you said, he is very uh uh Jeff trailer because he was so successful in high school, he's a recruiting machine, he's a huge part of Baylor's success.
- 9:27SPEAKER_01: Uh, how Baylor's been able to bounce back after terrible years and uh losing their coaches, they've just been able to rebuild instantly, something that Techstech hasn't been able to do in 10 years.
- 9:37SPEAKER_01: It's incredibly impressive.
- 9:38SPEAKER_01: And Joey McGuire really seems to be a huge reason why.
- 9:42SPEAKER_01: He really helped build the Matt Rule and now the Dave Aranda teams at Baylor.
- 9:46SPEAKER_01: And Baylor's looking at it looking like it could become a Big 12 favorite this season out in year two of Dave Aranda.
- 9:52SPEAKER_01: That's incredibly impressive.
- 9:54SPEAKER_01: Um, but this coaching search just got really complicated.
- 9:58SPEAKER_01: You know, we we're talking about uh one of our biggest rivals here in the conference, huge bombshell news.
- 10:04SPEAKER_01: Like everyone knew that he was on the decline, but I don't think anyone saw TCU firing their greatest, greatest coach of school history and one of the greatest coaches of all time in college football, arguably, obviously.
- 10:15SPEAKER_01: Um, so that was really, really surprising.
- 10:18SPEAKER_01: That man has a statue of him in front of the the stadium, he was there for years, decades.
- 10:23SPEAKER_01: So it's it's shocking in the the the way college football is looking right now.
- 10:27SPEAKER_01: I think TCU is seeing the same thing tech was, you know, it's really time to re-establish ourselves in a new look, Big 12 for the future.
- 10:34SPEAKER_01: Um, so they're they they pulled the trigger as well.
- 10:36SPEAKER_01: So, how do you think that complicates it with us?
- 10:40SPEAKER_01: You know, now are we do you think we're gonna be looking at the same coaches?
- 10:43SPEAKER_01: Do you think it's the same sort of pool?
- 10:44SPEAKER_01: Do you think we're gonna be in bidding wars with TCU?
- 10:47SPEAKER_01: Do you think coaches that these prospect coaches are really gonna be weighing their options more so now that there's another big Texas team open?
- 10:55SPEAKER_02: Yeah, absolutely.
- 10:56SPEAKER_02: On all those, I mean, there's not it doesn't affect us in terms of Patterson.
- 11:00SPEAKER_02: Some people want to think that Gary Patterson is gonna come to Lubbock now.
- 11:04SPEAKER_02: That's not true in any, and I don't want him here, to be honest.
- 11:07SPEAKER_02: But uh yeah, you're competing against TCUs in the same conference, uh, has been more successful than your program has the last 10.
- 11:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and honestly, they're in the DFW area.
- 11:19SPEAKER_02: I mean, I know we always say location doesn't matter, but initially, when somebody's thinking, hey, do I want to go to Lubbock or do I want to go to Fort Worth?
- 11:27SPEAKER_02: It's like, well, you know, a lot of those guys are gonna say Fort Worth.
- 11:30SPEAKER_02: Like it just is what it is.
- 11:31SPEAKER_02: I mean, in terms of alumni base, in terms of uh a lot of other things, I think Texas Tech has an advantage, but it's not like TCU refuses to pay their coaches.
- 11:42SPEAKER_02: I mean, Gary Patterson was a top 10 highest paid coach in college football this year, so they're willing to pay their staff.
- 11:49SPEAKER_02: It's not that, and so it is gonna affect this.
- 11:52SPEAKER_02: I hate that it happened now because now we're gonna compete with whoever uh, you know, decides to say Sonny Dykes.
- 11:58SPEAKER_02: Sonny Dykes is right across the street to TCU.
- 12:01SPEAKER_02: I mean, he's like, you know, do you want to move to Fort Worth and you know, 45 minutes down from where you've already been coaching?
- 12:09SPEAKER_02: You already know the area, you've been recruiting DFW, you're right there.
- 12:14SPEAKER_02: Or do you want to go four and a half hours down uh west to Lubbock and do that whole deal and try to recruit there?
- 12:20SPEAKER_02: And so uh, you know, I'm not crapping on Lubbock, I'm not crapping on the location, but uh it does affect us in terms of the coaching search, and people are gonna be, I'm sure TCU is gonna be going for the same people that tech's going for, and that stinks.
- 12:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think uh Sonny Dykes is probably the first name that pops up whenever we're talking about TCU versus Texas Tech and the coaching search.
- 12:42SPEAKER_01: I'm sure that he is very high on their list as well.
- 12:45SPEAKER_01: Um, it's and it's a very similar job, I would assume, to SMU for uh first for Dykes.
- 12:51SPEAKER_01: He would probably be essentially just kind of doing an upgraded version of SMU rather than doing a complete rebuild.
- 12:57SPEAKER_01: He wouldn't do it wouldn't be as big of a rebuild at CCU as it is at Texas Tech.
- 13:00SPEAKER_01: We it's he's he's looking at truly building a program from the ground up at tech.
- 13:05SPEAKER_01: Um, and probably not so much at TCU, you know, it's GPAT, even even though it's not a great year for them, it's not like it's been disastrous.
- 13:11SPEAKER_01: So um it's gonna be really interesting.
- 13:15SPEAKER_01: It it's that six million a year that that that they paid GPAT's obviously entice a lot of coaches, but I really I don't I don't see TCU's next coach being paid that much.
- 13:24SPEAKER_01: I don't think that's gonna happen out of the gates.
- 13:26SPEAKER_01: I think that uh it was just more of GPAT earned that, and that was back whenever other programs were really flirting with him to to steal them from TCU and he leveraged that to get a better pay, pay bigger paycheck, which is what these guys do.
- 13:38SPEAKER_01: So, yeah, I I think it really only comes into effect mostly with dykes.
- 13:42SPEAKER_01: I doubt TCU is even remotely thinking about Joey McGuire, so it's I I maybe Napier at Louisiana, maybe, but I don't know how if there's really serious interest from tech there.
- 13:54SPEAKER_01: So uh it's just gonna be interesting to see how both of these programs unfold and who's who makes the moves first and how that affects one or the other.
- 14:02SPEAKER_02: Well, and to the money point that you're thinking with TCU, it's like they were already willing to pay six million dollars a year for just Gary Patterson.
- 14:09SPEAKER_02: Now, think about they go get Sonny Dykes for four million a year, then they have that extra two million to go spend on coordinators.
- 14:16SPEAKER_02: I mean, that's something the tech has not been willing to do in the past is pay their coordinators big-time money for big time coordinators.
- 14:24SPEAKER_02: I mean, the Sonny Cumbe was a little different, he's making about seven figures, I think.
- 14:28SPEAKER_02: But I mean, before that, we never gave Cliff Kingsbury any coordinator money, you know, any big money to go pay coordinators.
- 14:36SPEAKER_02: You never, I mean, and that's such a big part and such a such a uh segue to winning is getting these coordinators, you know, not if we have Matt Wells and then we don't have David Yost or don't have Keith Patterson and have an upgrade there.
- 14:52SPEAKER_02: I mean, I think it's a little different story than uh than what we had with him.
- 14:57SPEAKER_02: So um, you know, there's obviously stuff that goes into that.
- 15:00SPEAKER_02: Does Sonny Dykes want to bring on his own guys?
- 15:03SPEAKER_02: Does you know, does he want an upgrade even at all for that?
- 15:06SPEAKER_02: So that's the difficult decision that both these schools have to go through right now.
- 15:10SPEAKER_02: And I'm glad tech has been kind of saying, okay, we're willing to just go, we're willing to just go with it with this program.
- 15:17SPEAKER_02: We want to be able to pay as much as we need to have a successful program here at Texas Tech, and we're not gonna skimp anymore.
- 15:24SPEAKER_02: And that's why I think the Jeff Trailer thing is interesting because I don't think it's gonna happen anymore.
- 15:30SPEAKER_02: I think he's committed to UTSA, I think he's committed to San Antonio, but for him to have this buyout and for tech basically gloating saying, Hey, we're really we're gonna spend this money, we're not gonna skimp anymore on football.
- 15:44SPEAKER_02: Well, here's your chance, guys.
- 15:46SPEAKER_02: You know, here's your chance to go spend the seven and a half million dollars, and then on top of that, spend five million bucks a year on Jeff Trailer plus whatever his coordinators want.
- 15:55SPEAKER_02: I don't think they're gonna do that, but if you say you got the big bucks and you're getting willing to spend the big bucks, here's your chance, man.
- 16:03SPEAKER_02: And I'm not even saying that's the right idea necessarily, because he is a second-year head coach.
- 16:08SPEAKER_02: We don't really know how he's gonna do it, Texas Tech.
- 16:10SPEAKER_02: So, do you want to take that risk and spend that money on a guy that's that's a little unknown?
- 16:15SPEAKER_02: So, uh, you know, there's just so many different things.
- 16:18SPEAKER_02: Kirby has to balance here, and the committee has to balance here, and Texas Tech has to balance.
- 16:23SPEAKER_02: So uh this is a difficult job.
- 16:25SPEAKER_02: I'm not, I don't, I don't have any jealousy here for Kirby at this point in time, because uh there's a lot of things that could go wrong for you.
- 16:34SPEAKER_01: Money seems to be the central discussion of this episode, strangely.
- 16:38SPEAKER_01: Um, and if we really want to prop ourselves up to be the power we think we should be in this new look Big 12, if we want to be one of the top two, three, four schools year in and year out in all sports, you know, money's a huge part of it.
- 16:54SPEAKER_01: You gotta you gotta have the best money to to draw in the best talent, like you gotta pay for what you get in this business for the most part.
- 17:03SPEAKER_01: So it's really interesting.
- 17:05SPEAKER_01: It's funny that you and I were saying how happy we were that it was Jeff Taylor is at UTSA because we said that the good news is Texas Tech can probably money whip UTSA and look what happened.
- 17:18SPEAKER_02: They got that HEB money, they got that HEP money.
- 17:21SPEAKER_01: It's it's it was incredible to see UTSA muster this much support and and money on the spot to to counter that.
- 17:31SPEAKER_01: And I was scared of that happening at SMU with dykes, but it ended up happening at a UTSA, so it's it it shows the dedication across the country towards college football and what it does for the school, what it does for the uh uh the athletic department, so the commitment that's being seen everywhere.
- 17:46SPEAKER_01: And we're just the frustrating thing is how far we are behind the curve that we're playing catch up, and it's it's really frustrating to still be playing ketchup after all these years, and it now's the time to really take the step forward, and it's we got to get this higher right.
- 18:00SPEAKER_01: Uh, you you would gotta it, you gotta imagine that the list is dikes.
- 18:07SPEAKER_01: Then uh who like who else do you think is out there for us to do this?
- 18:11SPEAKER_02: I know I really think Joey Maguire is being considered, yeah.
- 18:14SPEAKER_02: I think I think he's actually a guy that we're thinking about hiring on because not only is he a little cheaper, but we give him that option now to go pay some coordinators and go get some really good offensive and defensive guys in here to mold the face of the team.
- 18:30SPEAKER_02: You know, Maguire, I think, has shown from his high school resume and what he's done at Baylor that he can be a leader of the program.
- 18:38SPEAKER_02: It's just does he have the X's and O's to really put it together?
- 18:42SPEAKER_02: And if you have a really smart offensive guy and a really smart defensive guy, you know, that's less pressure off of you.
- 18:49SPEAKER_02: So I think that's what we tried to do with Matt Wells, but it didn't quite work out because he didn't have the coordinators for it.
- 18:56SPEAKER_02: I mean, Keith Patterson has shown that he's not fit for a power five-level job.
- 19:01SPEAKER_02: You know, David Yost, we saw that after two seasons was awful.
- 19:05SPEAKER_02: And then we finally brought on Sonny Cumbe, who I think has done a pretty decent job for the most part this season.
- 19:10SPEAKER_02: But Keith Patterson has just been brutal with that defense that we have after all this praise we gave him, too.
- 19:16SPEAKER_01: Man, like we were like, you know, Keith Patterson's done a great job with what we have.
- 19:21SPEAKER_02: And it's because what did we because what did we have before that?
- 19:24SPEAKER_02: We had utter shit.
- 19:26SPEAKER_02: We didn't have like, you know, say what you want about David Gibbs and the guy before him, but our defense was abysmal.
- 19:33SPEAKER_02: They may as well have not even shown up on the field, and then as soon as we get Matt Wells, we hold some teams to 25 points.
- 19:40SPEAKER_02: That's something Cliff never freaking did.
- 19:42SPEAKER_02: So, you know, we were like happy to get an upgrade, but also it still wasn't good.
- 19:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he's definitely lost his games.
- 19:50SPEAKER_01: The defense is the reason why we we absolutely got blown out by UT and TCU.
- 19:55SPEAKER_01: The offensive efforts weren't stellar, but it definitely wasn't the reason why the results were what they were.
- 19:59SPEAKER_01: So it's been it's been really frustrating.
- 20:01SPEAKER_01: It's time to get the right coordinators, uh, especially at defense, it's time to turn that around, and it's all about just building from the ground up, man.
- 20:09SPEAKER_01: I think it's that's gonna have to be what it is.
- 20:11SPEAKER_01: I I don't think we can be expect expecting a reload.
- 20:15SPEAKER_01: I don't think you can sell that to anyone at Texas Tech right now.
- 20:18SPEAKER_01: So um, but yeah, dude, I I think we've probably worn out the coaching talk.
- 20:23SPEAKER_02: Uh I did I did want to I did want to talk about Mike Leach because he's been a hot name as of right now.
- 20:29SPEAKER_02: Some people really want to bring back Mike Leach.
- 20:31SPEAKER_02: And uh to those to those people, I just have to say, guys, you know, this isn't 2008 anymore.
- 20:38SPEAKER_02: We're not we're Mike Leach, he was great while he was at tech.
- 20:44SPEAKER_02: He was, you know, uh, we just want to relive the glory days if we're hiring back Mike Leach.
- 20:50SPEAKER_02: He's not the answer at this point, he hasn't really done much at Mississippi State.
- 20:55SPEAKER_02: I know he's had a pretty good season uh so far this year, a decent season this year.
- 21:01SPEAKER_02: But uh the guy's like 62, you know, we don't need to bring that back.
- 21:05SPEAKER_02: Is it even in Mike Leach's best intentions to come back, or is it more of a revenge type of thing?
- 21:11SPEAKER_02: Like, hey, I'm gonna prove the guys that fired me wrong.
- 21:14SPEAKER_02: If that's the case, I really don't want him back.
- 21:16SPEAKER_02: It's just you know, I say what you want about the pirate curse or whatever, but my god, I I we're just holding on to the past, and it's not something that I think he would do better than what Matt Wells did, but I don't think he's the answer.
- 21:30SPEAKER_02: I think we got to get a guy who wants a complete rebuild of the program and somebody that's just better, better fit and and younger than Mike Leach.
- 21:40SPEAKER_01: The pinning for the nostalgia is just a result of what we have in the football program today.
- 21:45SPEAKER_01: If if we've had solid hires since then, it would you we'd still look at back on him fondly and be like, those were great years.
- 21:51SPEAKER_01: He was a great coach at Texas Tech, but we wouldn't be like, We need Mike Leach back, or we're never gonna win again.
- 21:57SPEAKER_01: No, I mean I'm I'm with you, man.
- 21:59SPEAKER_01: I think the biggest thing.
- 22:00SPEAKER_01: Is yes, he'd obviously be an upgrade, but you're right.
- 22:02SPEAKER_01: He's the man's 62.
- 22:04SPEAKER_01: He's he's not in the business of rebuilding programs anymore.
- 22:07SPEAKER_01: He's he's he's on his he's in on he's on his way out.
- 22:10SPEAKER_01: Like these are his last years as a head football coach from age alone.
- 22:14SPEAKER_01: You know, like retirement is coming up, and I don't even want to think about the financials that would be around hiring uh Mike Leach away from Mississippi State.
- 22:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think I think people think it's like the easiest thing in the world that we're gonna go hire him away from an SEC school.
- 22:27SPEAKER_02: Exactly.
- 22:28SPEAKER_02: No, guys, we're gonna have to pay a ton of money to get that dude back.
- 22:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah, they there's they don't they don't mess around in that in that part of the country when it comes to college football, they would pay whatever tech would even try to come at them with.
- 22:40SPEAKER_01: Uh, I'm not saying that tech is less wealthy than a Mississippi State at all.
- 22:47SPEAKER_01: I'm just saying they'll they'll definitely try their very best to match anything tech throws at them.
- 22:52SPEAKER_01: So it it that's just not gonna happen.
- 22:54SPEAKER_01: I just don't think that's any real that is realistic at all.
- 22:57SPEAKER_01: And like you said, man, it's you would he be coming here for the right reasons?
- 23:01SPEAKER_01: Would it be like I'm gonna hop on a white horse and and go with save that program and actually do it?
- 23:07SPEAKER_01: Or is it more just a big middle finger to to guys like Kent Hance and uh and Craig James and stuff?
- 23:13SPEAKER_01: So it it's just it's just us pining for the past.
- 23:16SPEAKER_01: We just want to win again, and I understand that.
- 23:18SPEAKER_01: We and the only times we can look back and and say uh and be excited about football was during the Mike Leach era, and a lot of us, like including you and me, never really never really experienced it either.
- 23:29SPEAKER_01: We don't really know a winning Texas Tech football program, and that's really frustrating for both of us.
- 23:33SPEAKER_02: Well, and that might put that might put us at a more level-headed decision right here, like you know, just because we never experienced it, we never got to experience it.
- 23:41SPEAKER_02: I'm sure if we were there during those times, it would have been like, Yes, give me whatever that was back.
- 23:47SPEAKER_02: But I mean, the fact of the matter is it you're not gonna get the same Mike Leach that you had in 2008.
- 23:53SPEAKER_02: The game has changed, he's changed, it's just different.
- 23:57SPEAKER_02: And I just don't think he's gonna emulate that same success that he had previously at Texas Tech.
- 24:03SPEAKER_02: And I know that's a kind of a hard pill to swallow, and you just want to think everything is gonna be okay when Mike Leach comes back to Lovick, but I just don't think it's gonna work out that way.
- 24:13SPEAKER_01: The air rate isn't a novelty anymore.
- 24:14SPEAKER_01: It was a novelty when Earl's at at Texas Tech, and we we took three-star recruits or generally worse recruiting classes than the likes of UTOU and AM, and we beat those teams because we had this novel offense that people didn't really know how to counter yet.
- 24:30SPEAKER_01: That's it's done, like that.
- 24:32SPEAKER_01: That book has been blown wide open.
- 24:34SPEAKER_01: Yes, it's still good to put put some teams on their heels just from the sheer amount of firepower that goes behind it, but it's not like teams don't know how to stop it anymore.
- 24:44SPEAKER_01: You know, there's a reason why Mike Leach hasn't reached the heights he did at tech, whenever he was the only man or really the only guy that had perfected it at that point.
- 24:53SPEAKER_01: You know, he did pretty well at Washington State, now he's doing pretty well at Mississippi State, but he's still having okay at Mississippi State, yeah.
- 25:00SPEAKER_01: And he he just hasn't been able to capture those top 10 years, those consistent top 25 years, like he used to.
- 25:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no doubt.
- 25:09SPEAKER_02: So I thought we'd mention it because he's his name's been thrown around a few times.
- 25:13SPEAKER_02: We still love the pirate, like I still like seeing it.
- 25:16SPEAKER_02: I still but I still root for Mike Leech.
- 25:19SPEAKER_02: He completely he 100% got screwed out of Texas Tech.
- 25:22SPEAKER_02: I understand that, but you know, it's it's just not somebody.
- 25:25SPEAKER_02: I think it's just you're holding on to the past too much.
- 25:28SPEAKER_01: Hey, can we stop saying we ran him out of town?
- 25:31SPEAKER_01: The fans did not run him out of town, and it it was the politicians, and for some reason, people think that we were just like pissed off he wasn't winning enough.
- 25:39SPEAKER_01: I uh obviously complete no grasp on what the situation was if you're saying stuff like that.
- 25:45SPEAKER_01: We were elated to be winning night nine games a year, so please, please stop it with that.
- 25:52SPEAKER_02: But yeah, I mean that's the update on the coaching hires.
- 25:55SPEAKER_02: Um, not none as of yet.
- 25:58SPEAKER_02: I think uh I think we're on Team Joey Maguire.
- 26:00SPEAKER_02: I think it's fun hire hire Maguire because it's fun having a united fan base, and we saw that today on Twitter.
- 26:08SPEAKER_02: Everybody's out here doing hashtag hire mcuire.
- 26:10SPEAKER_02: There's still, you know, those those uh you know, those people here and there that are saying, you know, oh he doesn't have the experience, all this stuff, but it's a valid concern.
- 26:20SPEAKER_02: It is, it is, but it's also if I can get everybody on the same page, if we can all get in on the same, like when Mark Adams was hired, if we can get to that level, holy moly, like that's awesome! I just love feeling that, you know.
- 26:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we it would be great to hire a guy that immediately everyone's gone, you know.
- 26:38SPEAKER_01: It'd be it'd be good to see a united Raider Lane again.
- 26:40SPEAKER_01: Like, I know we've we're beating a drum that we won't stop repeating.
- 26:44SPEAKER_01: This Matt Wells never ever had that.
- 26:46SPEAKER_01: He whenever we hired him, it was never a unified fan base on it.
- 26:50SPEAKER_01: You know, most of us were like going along with it because Kirby hired him.
- 26:53SPEAKER_01: He was our coach.
- 26:53SPEAKER_01: I mean, what are you gonna do?
- 26:54SPEAKER_01: Not cheer for our coach, but we knew none of us were excited about it.
- 26:58SPEAKER_01: I mean, I I was obviously just excited about the next chapter, but I knew nothing about Matt Wells.
- 27:04SPEAKER_01: I'm not saying I know what's fun about Joey McGuire, but him being the West Texas guy he is, he's even tweeting uh during baylor, oh not during baylor games, but hashtag West TexasTough.
- 27:14SPEAKER_01: Dude, that is waiting to just blow up at tech, you know that that would be our hashtag.
- 27:19SPEAKER_01: That would absolutely become Tex Football's hashtag is West Texas Tough.
- 27:23SPEAKER_01: So it I it would be great to have a wayward son back and alum, a guy that loves Texas Tech, and that would probably jump on the jump on it instantly, and you probably don't have to pay that much to do it.
- 27:34SPEAKER_02: Yeah, exactly.
- 27:34SPEAKER_02: That was what I was just about to say, and and a cheaper option where you can spend that money elsewhere on coordinators and everything like that.
- 27:41SPEAKER_02: So um I'd be all for it.
- 27:43SPEAKER_02: I I'm all for a lot of the I mean, even you know, if Mike Leach gets freaking hired back, I'm gonna be all in.
- 27:49SPEAKER_01: That'll be I mean, we're what the our our tune completely changes if we've hired absolutely oh yeah, it's time, it's time to go back to the golden age.
- 27:56SPEAKER_02: It's happening because we support Texas Tech, and we're gonna support the next guy as long as his not his name is not Bryals.
- 28:03SPEAKER_01: So um, you know, you know, the Bryals crowd is probably pretty bumped about uh trailer, pretty much.
- 28:08SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah, they were like, Well, who are you gonna pick now?
- 28:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you know that obviously that that that does float his name up higher, but I still think it's just floating into like a non-starter pool because I really do not think he's on Kirby's list.
- 28:21SPEAKER_01: I know Kirby's not the only guy on that committee, but I could you have to imagine he's still the one steering the ship.
- 28:28SPEAKER_02: Well, it's it's not gonna make it, it's not gonna make it past Scuvenek, it's not gonna do that.
- 28:32SPEAKER_02: He's not gonna hire our Bryals, he knows better, he knows better for the university for the perception, he knows everything.
- 28:38SPEAKER_02: So I'm not super worried about Bryals, but I just hate that his name keeps being brought up.
- 28:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so I think uh the the consistency, the consensus that's a hard word to say on this podcast, is uh Sonny Dykes and Joey Maguire are probably officially our two favorite guys to take over the program.
- 28:53SPEAKER_02: But we would be happy with others.
- 28:55SPEAKER_01: It's just yeah, and there's still Anthony Lynn and stuff out there, uh, that you know no one's bringing up and stuff like that.
- 29:01SPEAKER_02: It's probably not gonna happen, but yeah, yeah.
- 29:02SPEAKER_02: I'm just saying, yeah, no doubt, no doubt.
- 29:04SPEAKER_02: There could be some freaking dude who comes out of nowhere that we're just like, hey, all right, maybe.
- 29:09SPEAKER_02: Uh, but you know, moving forward, we'll keep updating you as the as the coaching search moves on.
- 29:14SPEAKER_02: We're probably not gonna get a firm answer until at least December with that sort of thing.
- 29:19SPEAKER_02: There's still three to four weeks left in the season, unfortunately.
- 29:22SPEAKER_01: It's still a pretty fun thing, though.
- 29:24SPEAKER_01: It's exactly because you're it just gets you excited.
- 29:26SPEAKER_01: Like the the tension builds, you just get excited about the next chapter.
- 29:29SPEAKER_01: Look, it's good to see Red Raider so invested in it, so excited about it, you know, talking about these names nonstop and talking about what could be just shows that the the fans are so hungry, we are starving for some success on the football field.
- 29:43SPEAKER_01: It's just it's good to see.
- 29:44SPEAKER_01: We should demand it, we should demand it of our football program.
- 29:46SPEAKER_01: We give too much to it.
- 29:47SPEAKER_02: So yeah, I will say I was down yesterday, uh Halloween, because you know, Jeff Trailer is my guy, and I was like, shoot, I just want somebody now.
- 29:57SPEAKER_02: I want to get behind somebody.
- 29:58SPEAKER_02: I'm done with the coaching search.
- 29:59SPEAKER_02: But then with this kind of you know, hashtag hire McGuire thing, I kind of got back into it because I saw some unity between the fan base, and that's something that hasn't been there for a while when it comes to football.
- 30:10SPEAKER_02: So uh, you know, I think that'll do it for some coaching, uh, you know, for this episode.
- 30:15SPEAKER_02: Uh, we'll obviously talk about it in the weeks to come, but let's talk about some other sports, dude.
- 30:19SPEAKER_02: What do you say?
- 30:20SPEAKER_01: Well, we should probably just briefly go over the OEU game real quick, uh, because it was it was I know it was Sonny Cumby's first game.
- 30:27SPEAKER_01: So I think it's worth talking about.
- 30:29SPEAKER_01: You know, we we still have a foot football uh team we are still supporting.
- 30:33SPEAKER_01: Um, and I, you know, I don't know about you, I would still love to see Sonny uh Comey squeak out a bold eligibility win.
- 30:39SPEAKER_01: I think that'd be uh great for him, great for the players, you know, for what they give to the to the team.
- 30:45SPEAKER_01: And um, but that did not happen on Saturday, did it?
- 30:48SPEAKER_01: It's uh there was definitely a game that had brief moments of hope, you know, especially in the first quarter where we really did look like that.
- 30:57SPEAKER_01: Perhaps we'll we will get into a fist fight with OU, theoretically speaking.
- 31:01SPEAKER_01: Um, but it just it fell apart pretty quickly, and the inevitable did happen.
- 31:05SPEAKER_01: I don't think any of us are surprised with the outcome.
- 31:08SPEAKER_01: I'm not exceptionally upset about it.
- 31:10SPEAKER_01: I'm not, and uh, it's just kind of like it is what it is at this point.
- 31:13SPEAKER_01: Um, but you have to think that Donovan Smith has to be starting for the rest of the season, or at least starting next game.
- 31:20SPEAKER_01: Um, it's it's time to put probably put the ball in another guy's hands.
- 31:24SPEAKER_01: And something to remember we we've been doing this season, like this whole season without Tyler Shuck.
- 31:29SPEAKER_01: Who knows what the season looked like looks like with him on the field.
- 31:32SPEAKER_01: But and Sonny Cumby has said that Tyler Shuck might be coming back this month, which would be awesome for the team.
- 31:37SPEAKER_01: But at this moment, I think you should probably give the ball over to Donovan Smith.
- 31:41SPEAKER_01: What do you think?
- 31:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I mean, I think that's your only option here.
- 31:45SPEAKER_02: Uh, Henry Columbi's clearly not the guy, he's just, you know, I uh like Henry Columbi.
- 31:50SPEAKER_02: I like his uh attitude towards the game.
- 31:53SPEAKER_02: I, you know, I like certain aspects of his game, but he's clearly not the dude.
- 31:57SPEAKER_02: I mean, we've uh we we saw it in this game.
- 32:00SPEAKER_02: I mean, he just doesn't know what to do in the pocket sometimes.
- 32:02SPEAKER_02: He takes some sacks that he doesn't need to, he doesn't have the arm to necessarily get it there all the time.
- 32:10SPEAKER_02: Uh, he he scrambles when he doesn't need to.
- 32:13SPEAKER_02: He's just not the dude.
- 32:14SPEAKER_02: And I think Cumby realizes that, and that's why even when Columbi wasn't really hurt, he got uh he got pushed out of bounds and kind of uh was down for a little bit.
- 32:23SPEAKER_02: So Donovan Smith came in and then Cumby just ran with Donovan Smith, even though Columbi probably could have gone back into the game.
- 32:29SPEAKER_02: But um, yeah, I think Donovan Smith's your guy moving forward.
- 32:33SPEAKER_02: I I don't see any reason why you wouldn't throw out the uh the freshman out there.
- 32:38SPEAKER_02: He's shown some signs of some good stuff.
- 32:40SPEAKER_02: He adds a more athletic uh factor when you're talking about the quarterback position.
- 32:45SPEAKER_02: Um, at least if Shuck does come back, obviously you go with Shuck.
- 32:49SPEAKER_02: But you know, for the time being, with him out, uh, I think you go with Donovan Smith and just try to move on uh and look forward to the next regime.
- 32:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and whenever you put Donovan Smith on the field, you get the fans a little more excited because they're getting something different.
- 33:03SPEAKER_01: And obviously he's the Levitic Golden Boy.
- 33:05SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, whenever the team's not doing well, the backup quarterback's the favorite player on the team.
- 33:10SPEAKER_02: So yeah, and that's always the case.
- 33:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's cool to see Donovan Smith play because you know, a lot of people use you know very flattering uh comparisons to him, like like Cam Newton.
- 33:20SPEAKER_01: He kind of has that build, um, he has that the speed, he has the the the arm that we'd like to see more of.
- 33:27SPEAKER_01: Um, and I think it'd be good to start playing him more so he can he has really thinks that he has a future in the program.
- 33:33SPEAKER_01: You know, we're about to see probably most of the coaching staff go.
- 33:36SPEAKER_01: And who's on the coaching staff?
- 33:38SPEAKER_01: His dad.
- 33:38SPEAKER_01: And if his dad goes, you you gotta think that this his son's gonna be like, Man, I think I might want to just follow my dad, you know, wherever he goes, or or just transfer to a place where he thinks he has a better shot at starting because he looks like he has the ability to perhaps start, and maybe he could be a future to look at for Texas Tech.
- 33:55SPEAKER_01: So I think you want to give him some hope that he has a future at the school, too.
- 33:58SPEAKER_01: I think that's another reason why you should play him.
- 34:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think the quarterback situation's extremely interesting because you know, there's a lot of different factors that are coming to play uh next season.
- 34:07SPEAKER_02: You know, is Shuck gonna leave and go to the NFL draft?
- 34:10SPEAKER_02: Is he gonna come back for a year?
- 34:11SPEAKER_02: Is he gonna transfer?
- 34:13SPEAKER_02: Donovan Smith, is he gonna transfer?
- 34:14SPEAKER_02: We have a guy named Baron Morton that's still on this team that is a very highly touted recruit.
- 34:20SPEAKER_02: You know, is he gonna be the guy next year?
- 34:22SPEAKER_02: So uh, and is he even gonna stay with the new coaching staff?
- 34:25SPEAKER_02: You know, it's just there's a lot of different things to think about right here.
- 34:28SPEAKER_02: I think at this moment in time, it's more about Columbia not showing what he needed to show than going for the younger guys because Colombi just hasn't shown it this year.
- 34:39SPEAKER_02: Uh we we expected him to be a little more consistent than what he's been uh so far.
- 34:44SPEAKER_02: We expected him to be uh, you know, we saw some deep balls late in that UT game where you were like, dang, okay.
- 34:51SPEAKER_02: So he's got a little bit of an arm, he's accurate, but then he'll throw some interceptions or or he'll throw some balls where you're just like, dude, where are you going with that one?
- 35:00SPEAKER_02: Um, so and I just I honestly, Henry Columbi's a G5 talent.
- 35:04SPEAKER_02: He's not, it's that's not a knock necessarily.
- 35:07SPEAKER_02: It's just a guy that you uh there's better options.
- 35:11SPEAKER_02: Donovan Smith is a more athletic guy out there.
- 35:14SPEAKER_02: He may not have the head that Henry Columbi has, but he definitely has a better run.
- 35:19SPEAKER_02: I I mean, the dude can escape the pocket.
- 35:21SPEAKER_02: We've seen him on every third down.
- 35:23SPEAKER_02: It seems like he's out there and he's gonna run.
- 35:25SPEAKER_02: I want us to open up that package a little more for him.
- 35:28SPEAKER_02: And I think there's just more stuff you can do with Donovan Smith that you can't do with Henry Columbi.
- 35:33SPEAKER_02: And I think that's your that's where Sonny Cumby needs to make the decision.
- 35:37SPEAKER_02: I think he will make the decision to go with Donovan Smith moving forward.
- 35:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and he's got two weeks, he's got a bye week this week, and so he can really flesh out Donovan Smith and the playbook.
- 35:46SPEAKER_01: He can really see what he can do at practice and throw it into the game and uh against Iowa State.
- 35:50SPEAKER_01: Um, and obviously we all we'd all like to see Shuck back.
- 35:54SPEAKER_01: And them talking about him coming back is really exciting because I think he'd be really key in pulling off an upset here these final games where every team's gonna be ranked and heavily favored against us.
- 36:04SPEAKER_01: I think an upset is possible, and especially at home.
- 36:07SPEAKER_01: So it's uh really looking forward.
- 36:09SPEAKER_01: I would really like to see that.
- 36:10SPEAKER_01: You know, a bowl when it would be great.
- 36:11SPEAKER_01: I'd be going to a bowl would be great, but I mean, what happened is what we expected to happen.
- 36:16SPEAKER_01: I don't know if any of y'all were thinking we're gonna pull up the pull off an impossible upset, other than and we hyped it up, we hyped it up.
- 36:22SPEAKER_01: I it was but it's it's just fun to have a little false hope.
- 36:24SPEAKER_01: We all knew it wasn't gonna happen.
- 36:26SPEAKER_02: A lot of it's memeing, guys.
- 36:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah, a lot of it's just like hey, we're just hashtag Sonny cumby hype train.
- 36:32SPEAKER_01: That's yeah, and we're sporting the crap out of him.
- 36:34SPEAKER_01: You know, I would love to see him do well, and it was really cool that ESPN did get give him and Lincoln Riley their two of being two Texas tech guys, um, meeting on the field, two Red Raider versus Red Raider, being on the same team back at tech.
- 36:48SPEAKER_01: That's really that was a really cool segment.
- 36:49SPEAKER_01: Um, but all right, man, let's let's close the book on football.
- 36:52SPEAKER_01: I think we've probably bummed our listeners out enough.
- 36:54SPEAKER_01: Let's talk about some happy stuff, let's talk about the other things.
- 36:57SPEAKER_02: Let's do it.
- 36:58SPEAKER_02: We're gonna start this talk and tech breakdown with some soccer because soccer's kicking butt, man.
- 37:04SPEAKER_02: We were the five seed going into the Big 12 tournament.
- 37:07SPEAKER_02: We just beat number four seed Oklahoma State in a thriller in a big in the Big 12 tournament.
- 37:13SPEAKER_02: It was awesome.
- 37:13SPEAKER_02: I watched a lot of that game, uh, went into overtime, then went into penalty kicks, and then uh goalkeeper Madison White ended up getting a big stop there against Oklahoma State, and we ended up pulling it out against a good cow cowboy, cowgirl, I guess cowgirl team uh there at Oklahoma State.
- 37:31SPEAKER_02: Um, and we're moving on.
- 37:33SPEAKER_02: We're playing number one seed TCU, who we played pretty good a couple weeks ago, actually.
- 37:37SPEAKER_02: They ended up getting a goal kind of later in the game that gave them the victory in Lubbock.
- 37:42SPEAKER_02: But we have another shot at them against the number one seed Horn Frogs in the semifinals.
- 37:46SPEAKER_02: That's going to be Thursday, the fourth at 4 30 p.m.
- 37:50SPEAKER_02: So if you're at home or you're, you know, you just got something going on or nothing going on on Thursday, go watch the ladies in the Big 12 tournament.
- 37:57SPEAKER_02: This is a big game for them.
- 37:58SPEAKER_02: So hopefully they can pull it out against TCU.
- 38:01SPEAKER_02: Uh, West Virginia is also playing Texas in the other semifinal game.
- 38:05SPEAKER_02: So winner of tech, TCU goes and plays the winner of West Virginia, Texas.
- 38:09SPEAKER_01: Uh now I'm mad that you reminded me that I missed a PK game.
- 38:13SPEAKER_01: You know, those are always so electric.
- 38:15SPEAKER_01: So fun.
- 38:15SPEAKER_01: The tension is so tight in those games.
- 38:18SPEAKER_01: It's so fun to see uh what if the goalie can step up and be a freaking hero.
- 38:22SPEAKER_01: So uh that's really great for the ladies.
- 38:25SPEAKER_01: It'd be awesome to top off the the season with a a trophy from the tournament.
- 38:29SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it'd be great.
- 38:30SPEAKER_02: And then even you know, going forward with that.
- 38:33SPEAKER_02: So I don't know where Tech stands necessarily in like the NCAA bids, but I'm sure beating a number one seed TCU and then going on and beat the winner of West Virginia and Texas would be huge for the ladies and their playoff resume.
- 38:46SPEAKER_02: So uh, you know, keep supporting them.
- 38:48SPEAKER_02: We're getting in the end of the season here.
- 38:49SPEAKER_02: Uh, they've had a pretty solid season so far, definitely better than last season, which is good stuff.
- 38:54SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 38:55SPEAKER_01: Coach Stone's a great one.
- 38:56SPEAKER_02: No doubt.
- 38:57SPEAKER_02: So moving on to volleyball.
- 38:59SPEAKER_02: Tech drops two matches to Kansas State.
- 39:01SPEAKER_02: It was a tough week for the ladies on the volleyball team.
- 39:05SPEAKER_02: Up next, we have a two-match series with TCU in Lubbock on the fifth and the sixth.
- 39:10SPEAKER_02: So, again, support the ladies for volleyball.
- 39:13SPEAKER_02: I know it's been kind of an up and down year for them, but uh, we have another shot.
- 39:17SPEAKER_02: We're playing TCU and everything this week, I guess.
- 39:19SPEAKER_01: K State needs to leave us alone.
- 39:21SPEAKER_01: Okay, like let us have one.
- 39:23SPEAKER_01: Hold please.
- 39:24SPEAKER_02: You already got our our football coach fired, okay.
- 39:27SPEAKER_01: And we got another one fired too.
- 39:29SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah, that's true.
- 39:31SPEAKER_02: Two in a row.
- 39:32SPEAKER_02: Oh, they're out for blood.
- 39:33SPEAKER_02: Who they play this week?
- 39:35SPEAKER_01: Oh man, you you catch me lying.
- 39:38SPEAKER_01: I I think it's I think it's Kansas.
- 39:39SPEAKER_01: I think it'd be like Kansas.
- 39:41SPEAKER_01: Let's go.
- 39:41SPEAKER_02: Uh-oh.
- 39:42SPEAKER_02: Lance Lipold.
- 39:43SPEAKER_02: That's it, brother.
- 39:45SPEAKER_02: You're out.
- 39:46SPEAKER_02: You're out.
- 39:46SPEAKER_02: Year one.
- 39:47SPEAKER_02: You're out, man.
- 39:48SPEAKER_02: And the Sunflower Showdown.
- 39:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think it is Kansas this week.
- 39:51SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 39:52SPEAKER_02: That has to be the most lopsided rivalry of all time.
- 39:55SPEAKER_01: Uh, it's it's probably the it's actually probably pretty balanced at this point.
- 39:59SPEAKER_01: Um, I might be talking at my butt because I'm sure Kansas owned the series before they turned to crap, and then K-State hired Bill Snyder and everything turned around for them.
- 40:08SPEAKER_02: Kansas State used to be really bad.
- 40:10SPEAKER_01: They used to be worse, they used to be like what Kansas is now.
- 40:12SPEAKER_02: So not good, not good, Rob.
- 40:17SPEAKER_02: But all right, let's move on because hey, guess what?
- 40:21SPEAKER_02: Before our next football game, we play basketball.
- 40:24SPEAKER_01: We play that's what we all want to hear, sir.
- 40:27SPEAKER_02: We play two basketball games before the Iowa State game.
- 40:31SPEAKER_02: Uh, and just get hype, man.
- 40:33SPEAKER_02: Get hype.
- 40:33SPEAKER_02: Basketball season is here.
- 40:35SPEAKER_02: Uh, Ryan Mainville is talking about it.
- 40:37SPEAKER_02: Our guy, if you want to go back and listen to our basketball preview, it is our highest listened to episode.
- 40:43SPEAKER_02: So we appreciate all y'all.
- 40:44SPEAKER_03: Yeah, we appreciate seriously.
- 40:46SPEAKER_02: That was like far and away our best episode.
- 40:48SPEAKER_02: And thanks to Ryan for coming on again.
- 40:50SPEAKER_02: But uh, dude, basketball, it's basketball season.
- 40:54SPEAKER_02: I'm so happy.
- 40:55SPEAKER_02: We're gonna get some fun here going on.
- 40:57SPEAKER_01: Football is the shot, basketball is the chaser, man.
- 41:00SPEAKER_01: It's gonna be such a relief, it's gonna be just a refreshing time to be a Texas Tech fan to see us just get out there and hopefully dominate these early season uh games because you know, we want to we want to get off to a great start in the uh Coach Adams era.
- 41:15SPEAKER_01: We believe in him so much, we really think he's gonna get the job done.
- 41:18SPEAKER_01: So I'm really excited to see him as the head coach on that core, man.
- 41:21SPEAKER_01: It's just it's gonna be really cool to see.
- 41:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah, we're I mean, we're also gonna see in these early games, we're gonna see a lot of different lineups.
- 41:27SPEAKER_02: Coach Adams is gonna be mixing, matching, you know, just see who has who plays well with each other, and that's what these early season games are for.
- 41:35SPEAKER_02: So obviously you want to beat the opponent by 50, but you know, uh it's also some lineups may not work, some guys are still getting used to each other.
- 41:43SPEAKER_02: A lot of these dudes haven't played with each other before in a real life game.
- 41:47SPEAKER_02: So, you know, we may see it may look a little rough at times, but just keep your head up.
- 41:52SPEAKER_02: It's gonna be good.
- 41:53SPEAKER_02: Uh, we have the talent on this team to compete with the best of them, and it starts with North Florida, it's on the 9th, it's at 7 p.m.
- 41:59SPEAKER_02: It's at United Supermarkets Arena.
- 42:01SPEAKER_02: Both these first two games are in Lubbock.
- 42:03SPEAKER_02: Um, I think they're gonna get broadcast on ESPN Plus.
- 42:06SPEAKER_02: I'm not 100% on that, but I think I saw an ad for it during the football game that they're gonna actually show the games on ESPN Plus.
- 42:15SPEAKER_02: So look out for that.
- 42:16SPEAKER_02: We also play uh our Gramblers of Grambling State on the 12th at 7 p.m.
- 42:22SPEAKER_02: I know pod favorite, weird pod favorite, cool idea.
- 42:28SPEAKER_02: Definitely an out there school that we for some reason like, but um we're big Gramblers here, big Gramblers on the talk and tech pod.
- 42:37SPEAKER_02: Uh, but yeah, no, it starts with North Florida, it starts with Grambling State.
- 42:40SPEAKER_02: Who do I cheer for that one?
- 42:42SPEAKER_02: Ah, dude, that's tough, man.
- 42:44SPEAKER_02: I'm a big Grambling state.
- 42:46SPEAKER_02: That's your Gramblers, dude.
- 42:47SPEAKER_01: I know, man.
- 42:50SPEAKER_02: No, but I listen, I'm gonna give a starting five prediction.
- 42:54SPEAKER_02: I don't know if it's gonna be right, but it looks like Kevin McCullough's gonna be that point guard.
- 42:58SPEAKER_02: It looks like he's gonna be there.
- 43:00SPEAKER_02: So I'm thinking Kevin McCullough, Terrence Shannon, Davion Warren, Kevin O'Banner, Bryson Williams.
- 43:08SPEAKER_02: I think that's gonna be your starting five first game of the season.
- 43:11SPEAKER_01: And you you'd think that you're gonna see a lot of rotation in these early games, right?
- 43:14SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah, absolutely.
- 43:15SPEAKER_01: You're seeing pretty much everybody because you you're you gotta be beating these teams by like 20 points, probably.
- 43:20SPEAKER_01: So it's you definitely gotta be seeing some seeing everybody get off the bench, which will be fun.
- 43:25SPEAKER_01: I mean, that's that's gonna be fun to see.
- 43:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I mean, we're gonna see a lot of Marcus Santos Silva still, we're gonna see a lot of Agbo.
- 43:32SPEAKER_02: I think we're gonna see a lot of Siddhar Calhoun.
- 43:34SPEAKER_02: I think we're gonna see a lot of these Malik Wilson.
- 43:37SPEAKER_02: We're we're trying to figure out this team, we're trying to figure out who works best with one another.
- 43:41SPEAKER_02: We have a lot of transfers in this uh program this year.
- 43:45SPEAKER_02: So, you know, hey, uh Mark Adams, do your best.
- 43:50SPEAKER_02: Work everybody in the rotation, see who plays well with one another.
- 43:53SPEAKER_02: That's what these early season games are about.
- 43:55SPEAKER_01: And I love seeing these kick off at the USA.
- 43:57SPEAKER_01: I bet it's gonna be popping, dude.
- 43:59SPEAKER_01: I bet the environment.
- 44:00SPEAKER_01: Even for these games, is gonna be awesome.
- 44:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 44:02SPEAKER_02: But you know what I'm hyped about?
- 44:04SPEAKER_02: We secured our tickets for the tech UT game, not in Lubbock.
- 44:09SPEAKER_02: We wanted to go to the one in Lubbock, but oh my God, those ticket prices are insane.
- 44:13SPEAKER_02: So we're going to the one in Austin.
- 44:15SPEAKER_02: So we're going to show out, rep the double T, make that a home court advantage for our guys, because you know that's what it's going to be.
- 44:22SPEAKER_02: UT doesn't have a home court advantage for basketball.
- 44:24SPEAKER_02: Chris Spears going to find that out pretty soon.
- 44:26SPEAKER_02: But dude, I'm hyped about it.
- 44:27SPEAKER_02: You, my parents, our buddy Clay, we're all going to the game.
- 44:31SPEAKER_02: It's going to be nuts.
- 44:32SPEAKER_01: That's going to be so fun, man.
- 44:34SPEAKER_01: Going to the concrete plan.
- 44:35SPEAKER_01: Never been.
- 44:36SPEAKER_01: So it'll be a fun, it'll be a fun venue experience seeing all the red outshine, the orange.
- 44:40SPEAKER_01: So uh you know, you know, it's gonna be a lot of raider power being shouted in that room.
- 44:45SPEAKER_01: It's gonna be sick.
- 44:46SPEAKER_02: We're gonna be loud as hell.
- 44:47SPEAKER_02: That's that's what I can tell you.
- 44:49SPEAKER_02: So we're gonna be a part of that for the home court advantage for hopefully tech in that atmosphere, which it will be.
- 44:55SPEAKER_02: I mean, honestly, have you been to a UT basketball game?
- 44:57SPEAKER_02: They they're really, really poor showing from that fan base over there.
- 45:01SPEAKER_01: I I loved the the the Chris Beard trying to get the students hype to come to the games video, where it's like a dozen people.
- 45:09SPEAKER_01: It might as well have been a live game, you know.
- 45:12SPEAKER_01: That's it's just it is a chef's kiss right there.
- 45:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah, because you know Texas Tech would have been there for it.
- 45:18SPEAKER_02: Like if they if Mark Adams called something for like a student fan base meeting or like a season ticket holder meeting, you at least have that whole lower bowl filled, or for sure.
- 45:28SPEAKER_02: No doubt.
- 45:29SPEAKER_02: So that was funny.
- 45:30SPEAKER_02: That was a good that was a funny video they put out there.
- 45:32SPEAKER_02: It's just like they're trying to make fun of themselves.
- 45:34SPEAKER_01: I know they they make it too easy, yeah.
- 45:36SPEAKER_02: No doubt.
- 45:37SPEAKER_02: So uh, you know, we're all hype for men's basketball.
- 45:40SPEAKER_02: Men's basketball has been gonna be great this season, it has been for the past few years.
- 45:43SPEAKER_02: But you know what?
- 45:44SPEAKER_02: I'm really hyped about is the women's basketball.
- 45:46SPEAKER_02: I really think this team is coming together, it's molding, they like each other, they really there's a lot of camaraderie there with that team.
- 45:55SPEAKER_02: The videos they're putting out on social media is really fun.
- 45:58SPEAKER_02: I think Krista Gerlich's got a good thing going on with this Lady Raider program, and I'm hyped for them too.
- 46:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah, dude, it's year two.
- 46:04SPEAKER_01: You know, I love the the women she's brought in.
- 46:06SPEAKER_01: They really like they're gonna make it make an immediate impact on the team, uh, because it's it's that you definitely want to start seeing some progression, you know.
- 46:13SPEAKER_01: Last year wasn't great.
- 46:15SPEAKER_01: Um, so you really want to see us kind of take that next step.
- 46:17SPEAKER_01: And and you know, this is a coach that we can all get behind, which is awesome.
- 46:21SPEAKER_01: So there's there's the fan support will definitely be there, which is which is great.
- 46:25SPEAKER_01: And these ladies deserve it.
- 46:26SPEAKER_01: Um excited to see how they how they shake up.
- 46:28SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna it's gonna be fun to see their opening games as well.
- 46:31SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no doubt.
- 46:32SPEAKER_02: We got a girl uh on the watch, you know, Vivian Gray.
- 46:35SPEAKER_02: She's gonna be awesome this season.
- 46:36SPEAKER_02: She's on the Cheryl Miller watch list, which is the best small forward in women's college basketball.
- 46:41SPEAKER_02: I mean, I think I think this team's gonna be much improved, and I'm really hyped to see them.
- 46:45SPEAKER_02: So if you have a chance, go check them out on ESPN Plus when they're on.
- 46:49SPEAKER_02: They have their first game starting in 10 days on the 11th against southeastern Louisiana.
- 46:54SPEAKER_02: So go support Lady Raider basketball.
- 46:57SPEAKER_02: Uh, you know, let's get that program back to its national prominence like what they were back in '92, you know?
- 47:03SPEAKER_01: Absolutely, man.
- 47:04SPEAKER_01: It's a proud program.
- 47:04SPEAKER_01: It's one of the proudest on campus.
- 47:06SPEAKER_01: So it'd be great to see them, you know, start to match our men's program again.
- 47:10SPEAKER_01: So, and we we know they're definitely capable of it.
- 47:12SPEAKER_01: Really looking forward to it.
- 47:13SPEAKER_01: It's just it's good to see shooty hoops in both sexes right now.
- 47:16SPEAKER_01: I'm really excited, man.
- 47:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah, absolutely.
- 47:19SPEAKER_02: So we that's it for the talk at tech breakdown.
- 47:22SPEAKER_02: We have no game to break down for next week, which I think is a good thing, to be honest.
- 47:27SPEAKER_02: I agree, man.
- 47:28SPEAKER_02: Oh, I'm happy to not talk about football for at least, you know, a week and a half, but uh, we do have some questions.
- 47:36SPEAKER_02: We have some stuff we want to we want to BS about, you know, talk about with everybody.
- 47:40SPEAKER_02: It was just Halloween.
- 47:41SPEAKER_02: Halloween's always a fun holiday.
- 47:43SPEAKER_02: Everybody has a good time dressing up, handing out candy, all that good stuff.
- 47:46SPEAKER_02: What was the best and what was the worst Halloween costume you saw?
- 47:50SPEAKER_02: Uh maybe on social media in person.
- 47:53SPEAKER_02: What was it?
- 47:54SPEAKER_01: I'm definitely giving gonna give props to my cousin and her son.
- 47:57SPEAKER_01: Uh, she's she's currently pregnant right now.
- 47:59SPEAKER_01: So she went as she was she made her pregnant belly, Mike Wazowski, and she made her son Sully.
- 48:05SPEAKER_01: Love it was it was a great combo, it was perfect.
- 48:08SPEAKER_01: I love the creativity.
- 48:09SPEAKER_01: I gotta give the best to uh to my cousin Megan for sure.
- 48:13SPEAKER_01: What was the best one you saw?
- 48:15SPEAKER_02: Uh the best one I saw.
- 48:16SPEAKER_02: I you know, I like the creative ones, I like the like play on words type of costumes, you know.
- 48:22SPEAKER_02: So uh throughout I've seen uh these so it's Taco Bell, and it's the guy, it's a couples costume.
- 48:29SPEAKER_02: The guy dresses as a taco, and then the girl is Bell from Beauty and the Beast.
- 48:34SPEAKER_02: And it's just like it's funny.
- 48:36SPEAKER_02: You they walk in together and you're like, what the hell?
- 48:38SPEAKER_02: And then like Taco Bell, and you're like, Oh, that's good.
- 48:41SPEAKER_02: So I saw that one.
- 48:42SPEAKER_02: That was a good one.
- 48:43SPEAKER_01: That's a solid couples duo, right there.
- 48:45SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no doubt.
- 48:46SPEAKER_02: But I I really wanted to ask this question because I have a beef, I have a very strong beef for topical costumes, and you know, like there's so many Squid Games, there's so many Ted Lasso, there's so many Dune ones, and it's like, guys, if you can't make the elite of elite of those costumes, don't do it, just don't do it because there's like three or four of them at each party, and it's like, guys, come on, like you're just not like I get it, it's topical, it's funny.
- 49:18SPEAKER_02: Oh, look at this guy, he's Ted Lasso.
- 49:20SPEAKER_02: But if you have a better Ted Lasso, you look like garbage, yeah.
- 49:24SPEAKER_02: So I have a real beef with the topical ones, yeah.
- 49:26SPEAKER_01: And so a lot of times, like with the Ted Lasso and other topical ones, it's they're usually easy to throw together.
- 49:32SPEAKER_01: So, you know, with Ted Lasso, what you're throwing on polo and khakis and a fake mustache.
- 49:36SPEAKER_01: So it I I feely though, man.
- 49:39SPEAKER_01: Ones that will be dated next year, wherever you're looking at Halloween pictures, like, what, what were you?
- 49:44SPEAKER_02: It was it was like Tiger King last year, dude.
- 49:46SPEAKER_02: Like everybody did Tiger King, and it's like, okay, I cool.
- 49:50SPEAKER_02: It was a documentary that was on Netflix, no one's gonna remember that five years from now.
- 49:53SPEAKER_02: It's like uh yeah, I guess it's fine for the moment.
- 49:56SPEAKER_02: I guess maybe I'm just being an old man about it.
- 49:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we're probably being screwed just for no reason, it's just a fun holiday.
- 50:03SPEAKER_02: It is, it is dressed up as whatever you want.
- 50:05SPEAKER_02: If you dressed up as Ted Lasso, I'm sorry for raining on your parade right here.
- 50:10SPEAKER_02: But uh, I I really, I really just think if you're gonna do one of those, you have to commit and you have to be the best one at the party or at the bar or whatever, because you know there's gonna be a million of them.
- 50:23SPEAKER_02: You have to go over the top and you have to look exactly like Jason Sadakis or exactly like the freaking I still haven't seen Squid Games, so I don't know.
- 50:31SPEAKER_02: You have to look exactly like the people from Squid Games.
- 50:34SPEAKER_01: I didn't realize you had such a strong stance on this man.
- 50:37SPEAKER_02: I do, I do, because you see it every year, you see the topical ones, and it's like, okay, there's a better Ted Lasso five feet away from you, like you know.
- 50:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah, uh what were I would have to say our best one in college was our Maverick and Goose that we went to the Oklahoma State game as remember that?
- 50:54SPEAKER_02: It was that was a good one.
- 50:56SPEAKER_01: That was solid.
- 50:57SPEAKER_02: It and the problem, the problem is neither of us.
- 50:59SPEAKER_02: I mean, I guess the hair color, like I have the same hair color as Tom Cruise, you have the same one as Iceman, but I mean, other than that, we don't look anything like that.
- 51:07SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, goose.
- 51:08SPEAKER_02: I'm sorry, my bad.
- 51:10SPEAKER_02: But um, yeah, I mean, there's I I had one in high in uh college where I don't know if it was it was probably junior year because we still we had the house by then, but uh I went as a blind Texas Tech defensive coordinator.
- 51:24SPEAKER_02: Yes, I was gonna bring that up too.
- 51:26SPEAKER_02: That one I put together like the day of, and I'm like, you know what?
- 51:30SPEAKER_02: I have this tech polo, I have some khakis, I have a hat, or I had to borrow your hat, I think.
- 51:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I I had some like weird glasses, and I had like we made this makeshift like like blind pole.
- 51:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I was like it was uh it was the thing that you twist the close blinds on windows.
- 51:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's that's right.
- 51:50SPEAKER_01: I think we just put some tape on it.
- 51:52SPEAKER_02: So that was like what 2016 or 2017, and our defense was just absolutely brutal.
- 51:59SPEAKER_02: And I think I was pissed off after we lost another big game where we gave up about 90 points, and I was like, you know what?
- 52:06SPEAKER_02: Screw it.
- 52:07SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna go as a blind Texas tech defensive coordinator.
- 52:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that was the year where uh I was a pirate and uh my fiance, well, now fiance Annie was a parrot, so that's right.
- 52:17SPEAKER_01: That's right.
- 52:17SPEAKER_01: That was that was a really fun party.
- 52:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that was a good one.
- 52:20SPEAKER_02: That was a good one.
- 52:20SPEAKER_02: We had some good Halloween parties over there at the old house.
- 52:24SPEAKER_02: But yeah, you know, I I didn't see a lot of terrible costumes.
- 52:28SPEAKER_02: We didn't do much for Halloween.
- 52:29SPEAKER_02: We have a dog that just got fixed, so we kind of had to stay in and watch him.
- 52:34SPEAKER_02: We couldn't go to parties or anything, so but I know next year we are going as Nacho Libre.
- 52:40SPEAKER_02: She, my fiance is gonna be the nun, uh, and I am gonna be Nacho, and it's gonna be fantastic.
- 52:46SPEAKER_01: That is glorious.
- 52:47SPEAKER_01: That is so awesome.
- 52:49SPEAKER_01: I I'm ready to see that go together.
- 52:51SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no doubt.
- 52:52SPEAKER_02: It's gonna come together real nice.
- 52:53unknown: Real nice.
- 52:54SPEAKER_01: So very nice.
- 52:55SPEAKER_02: Uh, very nice.
- 52:56SPEAKER_02: No, no borad, no borad here.
- 52:58SPEAKER_01: No borad.
- 52:59SPEAKER_01: I know.
- 52:59SPEAKER_01: I'm I'm crossing my wires here.
- 53:01SPEAKER_02: Yeah, there you go.
- 53:02SPEAKER_02: But uh, okay, next question.
- 53:04SPEAKER_02: This came up because it always does after Halloween comes up.
- 53:09SPEAKER_02: When is the right time to start celebrating Christmas?
- 53:14SPEAKER_02: When do you start putting up the decorations?
- 53:16SPEAKER_02: When do you start throwing on the Christmas jams?
- 53:19SPEAKER_02: When is that time of the year for you?
- 53:22SPEAKER_01: I think it's fair to start leaning into that the week of Thanksgiving.
- 53:28SPEAKER_01: Like, I like I think you want to have the Christmas tree up and all that, and be and have some Christmas decorations on the house for Thanksgiving.
- 53:34SPEAKER_01: Really feel a little more maybe not the Christmas tree, maybe not that, but you know, I I think because you know, with the Macy's Day Parade, it ends with Santa Claus, you know, like bringing in Christmas.
- 53:45SPEAKER_01: So okay, I I would say the week of Thanksgiving is when it's fair to start really prepping for it, but I think like right now is way too early, and uh whenever I'm not consistently wearing warmer clothes, it feels weird.
- 53:59SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but I mean, Texas, you live in Texas, so it doesn't start getting cold until later.
- 54:04SPEAKER_02: But I December 1st is when you start getting ready for Christmas, yeah, that's what it is, because Thanksgiving needs its due, it never gets its due.
- 54:15SPEAKER_02: Everybody's so freaking ready to get some presents that they're all for Christmas and give me some give the tree up on November 2nd.
- 54:23SPEAKER_02: And it's like, no, guys, give Thanksgiving its due.
- 54:27SPEAKER_02: I think December 1st is a perfect time to start getting the tree, get the lights up there, get your presents in, uh, go do all that stuff.
- 54:35SPEAKER_02: It's sweater weather in December.
- 54:38SPEAKER_02: You know, it's I I I don't I think Thanksgiving gets a bad rap in the grand scheme.
- 54:42SPEAKER_01: I I think you're overplaying it.
- 54:44SPEAKER_01: I I don't think Thanksgiving gets overshadowed by Christmas.
- 54:47SPEAKER_01: I think Thanksgiving's kind of like a lead into it, like it kind of the but it's its own thing, it's it is its own holiday.
- 54:53SPEAKER_01: But it whatever you think they're kind of grouped together whenever you think about that time of the year, though.
- 54:59SPEAKER_01: You know, you think of like Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's, and those are like bunched together to be like the holidays, but they're a month apart, though.
- 55:08SPEAKER_01: That's the thing.
- 55:09SPEAKER_01: It's it's but it's like a a a month, about a month-long whole deal of these celebrations of different things, you know.
- 55:17SPEAKER_01: And and you know, the whole point of Thanksgiving is just getting with your family and friends and and being grateful for what you have.
- 55:23SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's it's not really celebrating anything else, like you know, with Christmas.
- 55:28SPEAKER_01: Obviously, it's the religious, you know, the birth of the Messiah.
- 55:31SPEAKER_02: You you don't celebrate the pilgrims.
- 55:34SPEAKER_02: We we go full on pilgrim outfits, we celebrate the whole thing, not really.
- 55:39SPEAKER_01: But no, I I'm with you though, man.
- 55:41SPEAKER_01: I think I think it's fair to make sure that you have plenty of like Thanksgiving decorations around, you know, do like really do the autumn thing and stuff, but you get the fall decor around the house before you get the Santa decor.
- 55:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I and I don't I really don't want to be hearing Christmas music until after Thanksgiving.
- 55:56SPEAKER_01: I think you can start you can start playing it after Thanksgiving.
- 55:59SPEAKER_01: So I you know, I I I feel I feel where you're coming from.
- 56:02SPEAKER_01: I don't think I feel as strongly about the barriers as you do, but it's fair, I understand.
- 56:08SPEAKER_02: Okay, yeah.
- 56:08SPEAKER_02: I just I just think Thanksgiving doesn't ever get its due justice because Christmas always overshadows all of them, and it's like Thanksgiving's awesome, dude.
- 56:17SPEAKER_02: You get the turkey, you get the football, you get all that good stuff.
- 56:22SPEAKER_02: Uh, but yeah, I just I just wanted to bring it.
- 56:25SPEAKER_02: I feel very strongly about that.
- 56:26SPEAKER_02: I think Christmas music, Christmas music is great.
- 56:30SPEAKER_02: I love it starting December 1st and going until December 25th.
- 56:35SPEAKER_01: What makes Christmas music great is you only listen to it in small doses, you can only listen to it for like 30 days.
- 56:41SPEAKER_01: You know, it's done.
- 56:42SPEAKER_02: Funny enough, this is the same argument for alternate jerseys.
- 56:48SPEAKER_02: It's the same argument.
- 56:49SPEAKER_02: More minimal is better because it makes it more special.
- 56:53SPEAKER_01: If you start trying to say less is more, yeah, less is more.
- 56:56SPEAKER_02: If you start listening listening to Christmas music three months out of the year, it's not as special than the one month out of the year.
- 57:02SPEAKER_02: Or if you start wearing your alternates, I am adding Iowa State right now for seven games a year, you know, it doesn't make them as special.
- 57:10SPEAKER_02: You need to wear them every once in a while.
- 57:13SPEAKER_02: So that's the same argument here.
- 57:15SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 57:16SPEAKER_01: Hey, I feel it, man.
- 57:17SPEAKER_01: I guess alternate uniforms are the Christmas of the football world or the sporting world.
- 57:22SPEAKER_02: Exactly.
- 57:22SPEAKER_01: That's a fair point.
- 57:23SPEAKER_01: That's a fair point.
- 57:24SPEAKER_01: It's definitely uh quite the uh very wide lens you have to use to view it, but I understand what you're saying.
- 57:34SPEAKER_02: Christmas is the same as alternate jerseys, that's all I'm saying.
- 57:38SPEAKER_02: Uh but we have one more, we have one more question that came up, uh, and that was is the five dollar Taco Bell box deal the best deal of all time.
- 57:54SPEAKER_01: It's really the best bang for your buck uh choice out there for fast food.
- 58:02SPEAKER_01: I mean, the the thing about it is you know exactly what you're getting too.
- 58:05SPEAKER_01: The food isn't gonna be good, that's for sure.
- 58:08SPEAKER_01: But it's gonna fill you up.
- 58:09SPEAKER_01: Like it's not bad.
- 58:09SPEAKER_01: I'm not like sitting here, I'm too good for Taco Bell.
- 58:12SPEAKER_01: But it's you know, Taco Cabana's better, and that's fast food Mexican.
- 58:17SPEAKER_01: But you you just you know what you're getting with Taco Bell, and for five bucks, you're like, I am feels worth of food for five bucks.
- 58:25SPEAKER_02: It's it's a ridiculous deal, it honestly is.
- 58:28SPEAKER_02: They give you what they give you like two tacos and whatever their special is that they're putting on that month, and then maybe some like little twisty fried crap.
- 58:37SPEAKER_02: I mean, it's like perfect for filling you up for five bucks.
- 58:40SPEAKER_02: I I mean, the only deal that I would say competes with it is little c's yo, that's five bucks large pizza.
- 58:50SPEAKER_02: That's true.
- 58:50SPEAKER_02: What do you like?
- 58:51SPEAKER_02: Honestly, uh the people that crap on little C's chill out, okay?
- 58:56SPEAKER_02: Little C's is fine, it's fine pizza for five bucks.
- 59:00SPEAKER_01: Five dollar hot and ready may really compete with the box.
- 59:03SPEAKER_01: I I can't, it's I'm having a tough time deciding what's the better deal, the fill-up box or the hot and ready pizza, because the the hot and ready pizza could probably hold you over for uh more meals than the Taco Bell box.
- 59:15SPEAKER_01: Like you could probably squeeze out two meals with the box or just eat one and eat it all and be really cool, like I did today.
- 59:21SPEAKER_01: But with the with the hot and ready pizza, you can you can stretch that out for like two or three meals.
- 59:26SPEAKER_02: That's true, that is true.
- 59:28SPEAKER_02: Uh, you don't get a drink with the little c's deal.
- 59:32SPEAKER_02: You have to go buy your drink.
- 59:34SPEAKER_01: That's true.
- 59:34SPEAKER_02: Uh that's the only downfall of it.
- 59:36SPEAKER_02: But honestly, overall, you probably get more food with little C's than you do with Taco Bell, but but it's and I I don't know, man.
- 59:47SPEAKER_02: I I don't know, man.
- 59:48SPEAKER_01: Uh, I think I think over this is what you come to for uh for talking tech.
- 59:52SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's what you do.
- 59:53SPEAKER_02: We're talking best fast food deals.
- 59:55SPEAKER_02: It's one of these two.
- 59:56SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna go with little c's being the best because that's a large freaking pizza for five bucks, and it's not bad.
- 1:00:05SPEAKER_02: Like, you know, I I don't know.
- 1:00:07SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 1:00:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and you could share it.
- 1:00:09SPEAKER_01: Like it's you you and the boys are grabbing or taking a pep, uh hot and ready five dollar taking a pep, splitting it with the boys.
- 1:00:16SPEAKER_01: You and I did that at least once a week in college, where we where we would be watching a tech game and uh eating little C's pizza.
- 1:00:23SPEAKER_01: Uh, and another thing that we didn't bring up was a dark horse was the mcpick two that McDonald's needs to bring back.
- 1:00:31SPEAKER_02: The micpick two is pretty fantastic.
- 1:00:33SPEAKER_02: What do you get?
- 1:00:34SPEAKER_02: You could get two Big Macs with the Micpick 2, but again, no drink.
- 1:00:39SPEAKER_02: Big Mac and a big McFish.
- 1:00:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah, the McFish is the most underrated fast food item.
- 1:00:48SPEAKER_02: The McFish goes, bro.
- 1:00:51SPEAKER_02: It goes.
- 1:00:52SPEAKER_02: The McFish hits, and I don't care what any one of you say.
- 1:00:56SPEAKER_02: You can say, ew, the filet of fish.
- 1:00:58SPEAKER_02: I don't want to eat that.
- 1:00:59SPEAKER_02: No, the McFish messes around, all right?
- 1:01:05SPEAKER_01: It is like the best uh fish sandwich out there.
- 1:01:09SPEAKER_01: We'll have to do a ranking of the fish fast food sandwiches.
- 1:01:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah, once Lent comes around again, we'll start doing the uh the whole the hierarchy of the fast food fish sandwiches, but no, the McFish slows, and that's and I'll die on that hill.
- 1:01:25SPEAKER_01: This conversation is really stupid.
- 1:01:27SPEAKER_01: We need to end this podcast.
- 1:01:29SPEAKER_02: Okay, we're ending, we're ending the podcast.
- 1:01:31SPEAKER_02: Let us know what you think.
- 1:01:32SPEAKER_02: What's the best fast food deal?
- 1:01:34SPEAKER_02: Also, what's the best and the worst Halloween costumes you saw?
- 1:01:37SPEAKER_02: And when is the right time to start celebrating Christmas?
- 1:01:40SPEAKER_02: Let us know all these things.
- 1:01:42SPEAKER_02: You can reach out to us on Twitter at talking tech pod.
- 1:01:45SPEAKER_01: Uh, song of the week.
- 1:01:46SPEAKER_01: Go ahead, Tristan.
- 1:01:48SPEAKER_01: Those were the questions that truly mattered.
- 1:01:50SPEAKER_01: All right, for my song of the week, I'm gonna go a little, I'm gonna cross the border here.
- 1:01:55SPEAKER_01: I'm going into Canada, I'm bringing down a country guy and bringing country back into this.
- 1:01:59SPEAKER_01: I'm doing Korb Lund.
- 1:02:02SPEAKER_01: I hope I'm saying that right.
- 1:02:03SPEAKER_01: That freaking Canadians can't even do names right.
- 1:02:06SPEAKER_01: Uh, I'm doing Bible, Bible on the Dash by Corb Lund, featuring a guy that a lot of y'all might know if you're in the Texas music uh genre is Hayes Carl.
- 1:02:16SPEAKER_01: So it's a it's a duet, it's a really funny, fun song about smuggling things across borders.
- 1:02:22SPEAKER_01: It's really funny, it's it's a and it's a fun tune.
- 1:02:25SPEAKER_02: We hit the road of feeding coolers crossed the stairs national, flowing with spirit and Bible on the stage.
- 1:02:35SPEAKER_02: Alrighty, I uh haven't heard of any of those guys in any way.
- 1:02:40SPEAKER_02: I can't say I've heard of either of them ever.
- 1:02:43SPEAKER_02: Not even Hayes, Carl.
- 1:02:45SPEAKER_02: No, why did he mix up his first and last name?
- 1:02:49SPEAKER_02: Why does he have a last name for his first name for his should be Carl Hayes?
- 1:02:55SPEAKER_02: Carl Hayes is correct.
- 1:02:56SPEAKER_02: He messed that up.
- 1:02:57SPEAKER_02: Somebody read his birth certificate wrong.
- 1:02:59SPEAKER_02: That's all I'll say right there.
- 1:03:02SPEAKER_02: Uh, my song of the week is very different from yours.
- 1:03:05SPEAKER_02: Uh it's gonna be.
- 1:03:07SPEAKER_02: Um, I was just going through my library.
- 1:03:09SPEAKER_02: I was like, what song, what song messes around?
- 1:03:12SPEAKER_02: What song do the people want to know?
- 1:03:14SPEAKER_02: Uh, I haven't done a Billy Joel song.
- 1:03:16SPEAKER_02: I like Billy Joel, I know he's controversial.
- 1:03:18SPEAKER_02: Some people really like Billy Joel, some people hate Billy Joel.
- 1:03:22SPEAKER_02: I don't really understand the haters of Billy Joel.
- 1:03:25SPEAKER_01: These discussions happening.
- 1:03:26SPEAKER_02: I not so much anymore, more of an 80s discussion, I guess.
- 1:03:31SPEAKER_02: But uh no, uh Vienna Le Wrong Generation, Le Wrong Generation, yeah.
- 1:03:36SPEAKER_02: No, uh Vienna by Billy Joel is my song of the week.
- 1:03:39SPEAKER_02: Classic jam.
- 1:03:40SPEAKER_02: It's just it's sung so smooth.
- 1:03:42SPEAKER_02: I love it.
- 1:03:43SPEAKER_02: I think it's a great jam.
- 1:03:44SPEAKER_02: I think Billy Joel has a lot of good music that he puts out there.
- 1:03:47SPEAKER_02: Uh, and Vienna is my song of the week.
- 1:03:49SPEAKER_02: Go listen to it.
- 1:03:50SPEAKER_03: Stream on, but don't imagine they'll come fruit.
- 1:03:56SPEAKER_03: Oh, when will you realize Vienna Waits Vienna?
- 1:04:03SPEAKER_01: I I'm surprised it took this long to do a Billy Joel song.
- 1:04:06SPEAKER_01: I honestly.
- 1:04:07SPEAKER_02: I like a lot of Billy Joel.
- 1:04:08SPEAKER_02: I'm I was looking through it and I was kind of going through my Apple Music, uh, just my library, and Vienna popped up.
- 1:04:14SPEAKER_02: I was like, that's a great song.
- 1:04:15SPEAKER_02: Let's recommend it to the people that may not know.
- 1:04:17SPEAKER_02: So, you know, we'll add that to the Talking Tech Songs of the Week playlist.
- 1:04:22SPEAKER_01: Obviously, looking forward to hearing it then.
- 1:04:23SPEAKER_01: I I know pretty much no Billy Joel outside this obvious hits.
- 1:04:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think you'll know this one.
- 1:04:29SPEAKER_02: You've heard it.
- 1:04:30SPEAKER_02: There's it's been in some movies, uh, but yeah, I think that's what that's where we're gonna end this podcast.
- 1:04:35SPEAKER_02: It's been all over the place.
- 1:04:37SPEAKER_02: Coaching searches, uh, Taco Bell.
