Transcript
- 0:12Hi, good afternoon. Welcome Millory Condon.
- 0:15On a Wednesday, the Iowa Sports Radio Network flag shipped out
- 0:18of Des Moines sports station One O 6.3 KXNO.
- 0:23Trent Condon, Ken Miller with you for the next two hours to
- 0:25talk sports with you. We appreciate you starting your
- 0:28afternoon with us wherever you are in the state of Iowa listing
- 0:31on the network or anywhere in the I Heart app.
- 0:34As we are here until 2. Here's what's coming up on our
- 0:37program, 1225 John Bowen Camp. Associated Press will recap the
- 0:42Iowa coordinators press conferences from yesterday.
- 0:46But more importantly, we'll pick John's brain on the World
- 0:49Series. It is now a best of three, two
- 0:52of which will be north of the border, assuming we get a game
- 0:55on Saturday night. Game 5 tonight, however, with
- 0:59the Dodgers and the blue. More importantly, come on,
- 1:02what's that? What do people care about more?
- 1:04The World Series between the Blue Jays and the Dodgers or the
- 1:07Hawkeyes here on the Iowa Sports Radio Network?
- 1:10I think they get. Their fill of Iowa, I really do.
- 1:12More importantly, the Iowa Hawkeyes, second to.
- 1:15You, perhaps to you. I would say 90% of our audience
- 1:19perhaps. But the one that has the
- 1:21microphone? That's true.
- 1:22That's. True.
- 1:23More importantly, as I like both and you know how I am, I'm a
- 1:26hawk and clone. But more importantly, we'll talk
- 1:29about the World Series when it comes to me with John Bowen Camp
- 1:32coming up here at 12:25. Then Mitch Holtis, he's the
- 1:35voice of the Chiefs, 1245, the Chiefs.
- 1:38The beat goes on with the Kansas City Chiefs.
- 1:40Mitch Holtis will join us here coming up.
- 1:43We will preview. Maybe.
- 1:45You know, it seemed like it was going to be the game of the
- 1:47week. I'm not sure it still is.
- 1:48Bills snapped out of it last week, but we'll talk about the
- 1:52Chiefs and the Bills. Cappy kicks off our number 2.
- 1:56He will talk Chicago sports with Cappy as the Bears.
- 2:00Who do the Bears have this week? Trent The.
- 2:02Cincinnati Bengals I hate. Bengals.
- 2:04I hate both the teams. For different reasons.
- 2:06Yeah, well, I understand why your hatred of the Bengals this
- 2:10week is what it is. You know, when when you look
- 2:12back at the games this weekend and, and Frank Schwab, who
- 2:15joined us yesterday, he pointed out he's right.
- 2:20Just how bad the slate of games were this past week?
- 2:24There was one game within 10 points.
- 2:27One, you're at the game. The Cincinnati Bengals now.
- 2:30Sunday night was a 10 point game.
- 2:31Everything else other than that, they were blowouts.
- 2:34These were terrible football games in week #8 hopefully Week
- 2:379's got something in store. And looking through the slate
- 2:40this week, can we see there's plenty of drubbings on the table
- 2:44this week? You got the Rams favored by
- 2:46North of two touchdowns against the Saints.
- 2:48You have a big spread on Thursday Night Football with the
- 2:51Ravens and Lamar's return in that one, The Packers a 13 1/2
- 2:55point favorite, Lions up to a 9 1/2 point favorite now against
- 2:58the Vikings. So could be another clunker this
- 3:00week in the NFL. Rams, New Orleans.
- 3:03Doesn't do it. No, it doesn't.
- 3:05We'll we'll see. Yeah.
- 3:06Kansas City Buffalo's got it. What is that number?
- 3:08Chiefs got to be a slight. Favorite.
- 3:10They are or. Pickle.
- 3:11Are they a slight favorite? Slight favorite, about 1 1/2,
- 3:13pretty much across the market. All right, and Sunday Night
- 3:16Football, Seattle and Washington, and that game looked
- 3:18a whole lot shinier. Any update on Daniels?
- 3:22Have you heard? Mariota wasn't brutal on Monday
- 3:24by any means? Not.
- 3:25Really wasn't his fault. I agree with you wasn't bad and
- 3:28then Monday Night Football Arizona and Dallas so the NF LS
- 3:32due to give us one of these weeks.
- 3:34Perhaps it will come. Matt Poston, by the way, is our
- 3:36final guest of the day 130 after Cappy joins us Poston's
- 3:40heartland college sports Big 12 conversation try to figure out
- 3:44how this race is going to go. Who's going to ultimately be
- 3:47left standing when the music stops.
- 3:49Two of them will punch their ticket to to Dallas.
- 3:52Fascinating because it's it's you could come up with two
- 3:55teams. I bet I could come up with maybe
- 3:57two different teams to play in this thing.
- 4:00It's fascinating. The Big 12 once again delivering
- 4:04is to as we think the Big 10s got what, 3-4 teams, 5 maybe?
- 4:105 would be a stretch. And that stretch would be I with
- 4:12this point for five, I think better than Michigan.
- 4:15And Michigan has to beat Ohio State, Iowa has to run the
- 4:18table, Michigan has to run the table, Washington has to run the
- 4:20table. And both Washington and I will
- 4:22run the table. That means Oregon's got 3
- 4:24losses. So you plucked them out of it
- 4:26and put those two teams in. I think 4 is the Max.
- 4:29I think that's where we are right now.
- 4:31When you look and you kind of, you crystal ball the rest of the
- 4:33season the way things would have to play out in order to do that.
- 4:36You know, when you talk about I, I, I got the push back again, I
- 4:40would. There's no sure thing that Iowa
- 4:41goes 10 and two and they get into the playoff.
- 4:44No, folks, everybody's not going to win in front of them.
- 4:47Have you watched college football before?
- 4:50All these scenarios, all these things that you come up with,
- 4:53all these maturations, they have to play other people and these
- 4:55other people are also involved in this mix.
- 4:58Not everybody's going to finish 11/1.
- 5:00And I have to tell this to you from time to time having yet
- 5:03this year, but it's not going to play out in that fashion.
- 5:06That is the beauty of college football and I think we're
- 5:09trending again. I think we're going to see the
- 5:12argument at about a 10 and two team, about 93 team, yeah, for
- 5:16that final spot, probably somebody.
- 5:17From, well, Trent, here's the good news.
- 5:18We'll get help starting on Tuesday with how this will all
- 5:21breakdown is the television show is back.
- 5:23Girls. 6th until seven, I think it's six to seven, whatever it
- 5:28is, until there, there's one night a year that they they got
- 5:31a whole bunch of college basketball normally on one of
- 5:34those Tuesdays and it gets interrupted.
- 5:36Do we have matching this year? By the way, shouldn't matching
- 5:39have started by now? No, it's not November.
- 5:42Didn't didn't they squeeze into October last year?
- 5:44Maybe the way the calendar fell, some years it does, but for the
- 5:47most part that's a November thing and it will be starting.
- 5:52Thank God Tuesday night. Yes.
- 5:55Well, I don't. Yes.
- 5:56Tuesday, Miami of Ohio at Ohio. There we go.
- 5:58UMass Akron. No.
- 6:00No how? About Wednesday, Northern
- 6:03Illinois at Toledo. That's my game.
- 6:05You're in. Yep, that's the game.
- 6:06That gets the precedent over Kent State Ball State.
- 6:08Yeah, it does. I like Northern Illinois,
- 6:10Northern Illinois, Toledo screams.
- 6:12Either Tuesday, Wednesday night, maybe some snowflakes.
- 6:15Certainly cold around freezing the freezing mark 32 somewhere
- 6:19in that couple of 100 people in the stands, family and friends
- 6:23and I don't know who would be on the play by play guys we never
- 6:28heard. By the way, I saw a clip
- 6:29yesterday from 1994 in the NFL. It was they were talking about
- 6:35the longest punt return. We'll never see one this long
- 6:37again. And it was New Orleans and
- 6:40somebody 2 awful teams, but the but the punt landed in the end
- 6:46zone and they just left it. Nobody touched it and they
- 6:49started walking off the field. So one of the guys on one of the
- 6:52teams. But that regardless of that
- 6:54play, it was Joe Buck. Oh, a young.
- 6:58A young Joe Buck calling, he was like on the 6th best team at
- 7:02whoever it was, CBS or whoever had them.
- 7:05But it would have been Fox in the day the Fox had it.
- 7:08But a young Joe Buck calling it, you can barely tell it's it's
- 7:12like his you know what's hadn't dropped yet.
- 7:14But yeah, Joe Buck. So he did start what?
- 7:17He wasn't handed the plum spot right off the bat.
- 7:20But he was handed us he. Was handed a spot, but he's
- 7:22earned that spot in every spot subsequently that he's been in.
- 7:25No doubt about that. I think he's the best currently
- 7:27in the business and there's some really good ones.
- 7:29There's some really good play by play guy.
- 7:30I love to Rico. Obviously, I'm a I'm a Joe Buck
- 7:34fan. Nance is still Nance doesn't get
- 7:40a lot of help from Romo. I think the country's sick of
- 7:42him at at this point. But there's some up and comers
- 7:45in this sport. Eagles.
- 7:47I mean, what's his name? Noah Eagle.
- 7:49He's going to be fantastic. He is already fantastic.
- 7:51By the way, just see who is rumored to be replacing Rafferty
- 7:54when he hangs it up. When the March Madness comes and
- 7:58goes and Rafferty says, you know, no mas.
- 8:00Is this his final season or is it just speculation?
- 8:03Speculation that both are in play.
- 8:06Gotcha. Who would take over in that?
- 8:08We hear him a ton and we both like him a lot and he gets to
- 8:14for sure. Billis no younger.
- 8:17Younger than Billis? Yep.
- 8:19Who you got? Hummel.
- 8:21Robbie Hummel. Yeah.
- 8:23Interesting, how about that? I like him a lot.
- 8:26I like him. I like him a lot.
- 8:28I think he's really good and he doesn't well, Billis would be
- 8:31fine because we're both Billis guy when it comes to hoops.
- 8:34Huh. I would think a bigger name.
- 8:36Do you really? Yeah, absolutely.
- 8:38As many games as he does, as many networks as he's on.
- 8:41But do does nationally people know who Robbie Hummel is?
- 8:46Yeah, maybe. Maybe.
- 8:48I think he's really good at what he does.
- 8:49He is. Absolutely.
- 8:50Anyways, so that's what's coming up on our program here today.
- 8:53We will recap game five of the World Series last night, Bieber
- 8:58versus Otani. Otani, given all that he could,
- 9:01gets through 6 innings now. I thought the fatigue when it
- 9:06comes to the game's greatest player maybe reared its head and
- 9:13when he was in the batter's box because and, and yes, I mean, he
- 9:16was, he was called strike three on one.
- 9:18That wasn't a strike that went Bieber's way.
- 9:21But we're just used to Ohtani being on base all the time,
- 9:23right? And last night that wasn't the
- 9:25case. Bieber was really good in that
- 9:27start. That's why the Jays went out to
- 9:29get Bieber hadn't pitched in two years.
- 9:31They got him for September and October.
- 9:32And so far that's worked out. Now, I anticipate tonight we are
- 9:37going to see Blake Snell at the peak of his powers.
- 9:41You know, we're off that layoff and he was not sharp.
- 9:44And when it comes to your Savage on the other side, his velocity
- 9:48starting to tick down a little bit.
- 9:50I mean, he'll, he will have started more games in post
- 9:53season than he did in AAA this year.
- 9:55This guy started an A, went to high A, then AA, then AAA, then
- 10:01to the show. And he'll pitch in Game 5
- 10:03tonight in a decisive game five of the World Series in Dodger
- 10:08Stadium. And they've been kind of
- 10:10protecting him a little bit. This will be his first post
- 10:12season season start on the road. Oh, interesting.
- 10:15Yeah, looking through the log here.
- 10:16Yeah, all four of them. Started at Tampa, he might have
- 10:20one more Rd. start the Royals. Was it the Yeah, that's right,
- 10:23he was down here, you're right in Kansas City.
- 10:25And then I think everything subsequent to that has has
- 10:28coming home. So what did you think of last
- 10:31night just before we get to Todd here?
- 10:32It was kind of just a whole after coming on the fairpoint,
- 10:36Yeah, it was just, yeah. It's going to be a let down to
- 10:38make the 1:00. Yeah.
- 10:39And it, it had that feeling. You could tell right away,
- 10:42though, I told you I kind of like Totani's stolen base.
- 10:44I just thought it was a good price form because he was going
- 10:46to be on a ton and they said they were going to walk him.
- 10:49You could see in that first plant trend.
- 10:51Oh. Absolutely.
- 10:51Yeah, the same thing. That first time he leads off and
- 10:56they have that angle from like back behind third base where you
- 10:58can see the pitcher and you can see.
- 11:00So they, and I don't love that because I like to see where the
- 11:03catcher sets up, but OK, fine. So they have it out there and
- 11:06you can see in that instance he takes just kind of 2 little jog
- 11:10steps off the basin and like he's not running tonight, he's
- 11:12not running, he's not running. He said after the game, after
- 11:14the 18 inning game, that he was tired.
- 11:16He just went to go home and slept.
- 11:17Wants the interview to end. He looked he looked tired.
- 11:21He just Yep, Another thing I I heard his his OPS when he
- 11:27pitches as opposed to when he's DH ING.
- 11:29What is it? It's like 980 when he's ADA and
- 11:33it's like 780 which is above average but not elite.
- 11:36But not his level. Right.
- 11:38And certainly for him, thought that was interesting, maybe
- 11:40something to file away for the future, next season with Otani
- 11:44or maybe a Game 7. Maybe.
- 11:47How big was Guerrero's home run in this game of things?
- 11:49Just opened up and. I thought it changed him.
- 11:52I could totally agree It changed the complexion because it it it
- 11:55seemed like, OK at this point maybe the Jays have a chance.
- 11:58Their leader just hit one out. They needed it.
- 12:02I there's something about this Blue Jays team, they just a
- 12:05bunch of red asses. They believe in themselves.
- 12:07They they think they're the best team.
- 12:08They've said it. I heard an interview, I can't
- 12:10remember who it was in MLB Network and whatever player it
- 12:14was, we're the best team in baseball.
- 12:15And they believe that, right? They don't care that the Dodgers
- 12:18have a billion dollar payroll. They don't care.
- 12:20They think they can win this thing and now it's a three-game
- 12:22series. Anything can happen.
- 12:24If you go by position, by position, who would you rather
- 12:27have at all those places? You'd get the first base.
- 12:29You know I got to have Latty do you, right?
- 12:32Yeah. Freddie Freeman is pretty damn
- 12:33good. Where else does Toronto have an
- 12:35edge? I mean, what are the position?
- 12:37Do they have an edge? Will Smith's a hell of a
- 12:39catcher. So is Kirk.
- 12:40They're both All Star catchers. Left fielder.
- 12:43I love Hernandez. With no Springer out there.
- 12:46Yeah, maybe center of our show over Pajez.
- 12:48Yeah, Pajez is hitting under 100 in post season.
- 12:52This guy hit 28 or 29 home runs in the regular season.
- 12:56And he looks like the guy that we saw early in his career
- 12:59couldn't hit his way out of the wet paper by.
- 13:01Starting Staffs. I mean, overall, of course you'd
- 13:05take the Dodgers. Take the bullpen.
- 13:08Neither of them are great. Neither of them are great.
- 13:10No, neither of them are great. I mean, Louis Varlen Snyder
- 13:13believes in this dude. Yes, he did.
- 13:15What are you going with Bassett in the ninth last night?
- 13:18I would have. Well, you heard me preaching
- 13:19about Bassett all day yesterday. I thought, yes, I would have.
- 13:22Now I have to think. How many pitch did you throw?
- 13:26You threw 8 on Tuesday. What did he throw last night?
- 13:2820? Oh, so he's, he's maybe could
- 13:31come back again tonight with a day off on Thursday.
- 13:35That series has been good. I think, I think the, I think
- 13:37the country's watching too. I, I mean, obviously when you
- 13:40factor in the Japanese numbers are through the roof. 30 over
- 13:44north of 30% of the population of Canada is watching this
- 13:47thing. Now this caveat you, you like
- 13:49take a look at North America, right?
- 13:51North America on the map, the Canada and all of that land up
- 13:54there. The population of Canada is less
- 13:58than the population of California.
- 14:00Think it like that there are more people living in California
- 14:04than the entire country. There's a wide swath of country
- 14:07you have up there. There's a wide swath of forest
- 14:09and snow and UN uninhabitable country.
- 14:13Let's get to Todd real quick. Todd, thanks for being patient.
- 14:16What's on your mind, Sir? You know, I'm just curious, are,
- 14:20are you guys wrapped up in the Chad power stuff at all?
- 14:23I have no idea who you're talking.
- 14:24About it's a show on Hulu. It's remember when Eli dressed
- 14:28up? Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 14:29yeah. It's kind of a playoff of that.
- 14:31But no, that's a show now. Yes, but with Eli, Eli is not
- 14:35no, he's not the character. Some actor, but no Todd.
- 14:39Too much, too much going on right now.
- 14:41Why what? What should we be?
- 14:42Should we be watching? This is the best thing to happen
- 14:47to television. In a long time, the.
- 14:50The actor is Glenn Powell from, you probably remember him from
- 14:53Top Gun 2 Maverick. He was the quote UN quote bad
- 14:56guy that was the arrogant, cocky pilot and he plays Chad Powers
- 15:01and he is absolutely killing it. And I'm going to tell you, I
- 15:04went into this thing thinking another stupid comedy right up
- 15:07my alley. I don't have to think.
- 15:09I can sit down, watch it, laugh. I'm a football guy and we are 6
- 15:15episodes in and this thing has turned into the dramedy that I
- 15:18did now needed in my life. A dramedy.
- 15:21I like that. So a little drama, a little
- 15:23comedy. So.
- 15:23So let me stop you, Todd. I'll be 67 in two months.
- 15:27Would would this would this move my needle do you think?
- 15:31I I think it was the and enjoying it and then the
- 15:36character development. I don't know who brother.
- 15:41Yeah. Cutting out on it, Todd.
- 15:43Go ahead. Oh, I'm sorry, the I was, I was
- 15:47saying the character development and the writing behind this.
- 15:49It, it started off as a comedy and it's just gone.
- 15:53I mean, my wife is hooked. She can't wait for it to come
- 15:55out next Monday for I mean, it's it's a good show.
- 15:58Steve Zahn. I don't know if he plays the
- 16:02football coach, the college football coach, and then he has
- 16:06a daughter on his staff. And this girl's name is Perry
- 16:09Matfield. Never heard of her.
- 16:11But I'm going to tell you right now she's going to be a star and
- 16:14you guys just need to watch it. I think you guys will love.
- 16:17It thank you Todd, appreciate the the tip and the advice on.
- 16:20I need a little laughter, yes. I need a little laughter in my
- 16:23life. I'm I if I find a moment.
- 16:26Hulu. Yes, on Hulu, you have Hulu.
- 16:29Yeah, I think so. Yeah, you got the Hulu.
- 16:31Yeah, you're good. Yeah.
- 16:33I got so many I want to catch up on though.
- 16:36You know, once it's always a long list.
- 16:37It is right? It is once baseball gets away
- 16:40and the matching sucks and like why am I watching last night I
- 16:43flip over to those garbage Conference USA games that I bet
- 16:46on both of them and I lost both of them.
- 16:48I, I told you 2 weeks ago, don't let me do it.
- 16:51I do it again last night. I go over to and it's just, it's
- 16:53awful football and the same thing's going to happen watching
- 16:55matching. And I know it's because for you,
- 16:57it's not about the game, it's the matching.
- 16:59Yes, it's, it's football's going away.
- 17:01You want to take every opportunity to do it, soak it
- 17:04all in. Well, it's so bad, though.
- 17:05Yeah, yeah, maybe Chad powers so.
- 17:07Bad in Illinois. Toledo's got a chance.
- 17:09Trent, come on now. We'll give it a half.
- 17:12Give it a half, give us some weather, give us some snow.
- 17:16And. And away we go.
- 17:17Yeah, maybe, maybe I'll get to Chad Powers, but we'll see.
- 17:21Comes highly recommended by Todd, for what it's worth.
- 17:24All right, coming up on the program, we're going to talk to
- 17:26John Bowencamp. We'll recap what he heard
- 17:29yesterday from obviously from both Phil Parker and Tim Lester.
- 17:34We'll get the update on that and we'll pick his brain on what he
- 17:38sees. I'm sure they'll be fine as as
- 17:41John will tell us And then Mitch Holtis on the Kansas City
- 17:45Chiefs. Here's Joe.
- 17:46Apparently we should be watching Joe.
- 17:48Hello Joe, how are you? Man, I'm doing great.
- 17:52How are you guys today? What's up?
- 17:54All right, check it out. That guy was absolutely right.
- 17:57That show. I'm a pretty, you know, picky
- 17:59guy myself. That show is top notch.
- 18:02And one thing I I he did not mention, and this is kind of
- 18:06funny, that the lady actor Perry Matthew, look, that is Mark
- 18:11Sanchez's wife. Mark Sanchez is in Mark Sanchez,
- 18:15Indianapolis Mark Sanchez. Mark Sanchez, as in I beat up a
- 18:19guy over a delivery truck. In Indianapolis.
- 18:22Wow, didn't know that. And her name's Penny.
- 18:25What? Perry Matfield I think Perry
- 18:28Matfield Yeah. It's just it's and you say
- 18:32you're 60 something, man. I'm 50 years old and I think
- 18:35it's fantastic. All right, I'm going to do it
- 18:38again now. Not tonight, but I'm going to
- 18:40get to I'm going to get to Chad Powers.
- 18:42How long are the episodes? They're all like 2 hours, are
- 18:45they? All right, it goes by like 20.
- 18:51Cool. All right.
- 18:52Thanks for the call, Joe. Appreciate it.
- 18:54We got some homework to do. I do.
- 18:55I'm going to watch Chad Powers. So this is based on the the
- 18:59spoof that when he showed up, where was that?
- 19:03Was it a Penn State? I don't remember.
- 19:06But yeah, Chad Powers, an American sports comedy series
- 19:09created by Glenn Powell and Michael Waldron, starring Powell
- 19:13in the role. So it's a good.
- 19:16Thing Perry's working because she might have to support the
- 19:19fan. Has there any of you any more
- 19:20about that? That's that story's one of the
- 19:23it's not Tanya Nancy right right but it's kind of that genre.
- 19:28You know, it's just things that totally catch you off guard.
- 19:32Beating up. I am a God delivery in the
- 19:34middle of the night. Guy's doing his job.
- 19:37I like to man. I like to drink beer.
- 19:39We both do. You like to have a little puff?
- 19:42Well. Has it ever put you in a level
- 19:45where you're going to do something like that?
- 19:47Well, I'm not leaving the house. That's true too, even when
- 19:51you're in Las Vegas, though that doesn't cross your.
- 19:52But you know what? No, doesn't feel like there's
- 19:54more there than just had a couple of too many Molson's.
- 19:58Yeah, it's time to go up to the room.
- 20:01You know, if you're in Vegas. That's true.
- 20:03We're due, aren't we, to get back to.

- 21:00The voice of the Kansas City Chiefs in about 15 minutes right
- 21:04now. John Bowen camp Associated Press
- 21:06As we recap the coordinators press conference was from
- 21:09yesterday in the first five games, maybe not all of them of
- 21:13the the World Series. John Trent Ken, thanks for
- 21:15coming on again this week. Good to speak with you.
- 21:17Let's start Let's start with maybe one of the questions that
- 21:21I took listening to Tim Lester and I think back now the
- 21:26question was posed about Haklinski and some of the buzz
- 21:29that was kind of surrounding him.
- 21:31And at the time we just all assumed there would be Hank
- 21:33Brown because that's who came in the first time that the backup
- 21:37quarterback was used. But obviously the Haklinski is
- 21:41opening some eyes and due get the sense listening to Lester
- 21:45that he's solidified that. Or is it still a competition as
- 21:49far as Gronowski's backup? You know, I it's probably still
- 21:53a competition, but I think he's got a pretty big step ahead.
- 21:57And I mean, you saw the other day kind, you know, late in the
- 22:00game when he got it, what he can do.
- 22:03And, you know, when, when you think about it, where we were
- 22:06back in August, you know, everybody thought, OK, Hank
- 22:09Brown's the number 2. Hank Brown has gotten some game
- 22:12time. Now all of a sudden Jeremy had
- 22:13Klinsky's there and, and he's getting in like that.
- 22:17So I think he's won the job. I mean, I think he came in and
- 22:19worked hard. And it's probably been better in
- 22:21practice. That's why he's #2 right now.
- 22:24And that kind of makes him, you know, the front runner when you
- 22:28get to December and get through this, you know, get through the
- 22:30end of the season. And so I mean, I, I, he came in
- 22:34with a lot of positive publicity and I, and he's, I think he's a
- 22:38really good quarterback and I think he's been able to grab
- 22:40that number two job. And maybe you're starter for
- 22:43next season, they don't have to dip into the portal again and
- 22:45maybe you can augment that roster and some other areas as
- 22:48how there'll be plenty of guys that are moving elsewhere.
- 22:50You mean? Yes, absolutely.
- 22:52Well, there is still some football in front of us for
- 22:54important games for Iowa. We know Mark Gronowski is going
- 22:57to be the guy. Health aside, he's going to be
- 22:59them here. Lester yesterday talk about him
- 23:03saying, you know, he corrects himself before I even have a
- 23:05chance to correct him. But the question was kind of
- 23:08posed, you know, is there is there more out of this passing
- 23:11game? I thought it was interesting.
- 23:12He said he's still kind of working on that recovery and a
- 23:15part of that is that step through that follow through it
- 23:18and finishing there. Do you think we're going to see
- 23:20more or is this how I was built? They're still going to struggle
- 23:23to throw the football. You know, I, let's put this way,
- 23:27the other day you saw him throw some deep balls and I, and I
- 23:30mean, so I, I do think they want to do that.
- 23:32It's just a question of can he hit those?
- 23:35Can he, you know, but I mean, what he's doing right now is
- 23:39what what you want him to do. And he's managing the game.
- 23:42He's not turned the ball over and he's and he's, you know,
- 23:45running the ball, which is, you know, hasn't happened for an
- 23:47Iowa quarterback in a long time. So I do think they're going to
- 23:50take some deep shots with it. And I do think those will come.
- 23:54But it's just a matter of you got to keep doing it, you know?
- 23:57And so, but as long as you're doing what you're doing right
- 24:00now and you're winning, it doesn't become that much of a
- 24:03big deal if he's not hitting those balls because you're doing
- 24:07other good things right now. Reese Vander is easy all the way
- 24:10back in his is his workload. Do you think it's going to
- 24:12ratchet up here in the final four games?
- 24:15Anything on that from Lester? No, but I I think well, I mean,
- 24:18I think you saw the other day. I mean you saw the place he
- 24:22could make and so I do think he is back.
- 24:24I think he is at that point now. OK, now you know, you used him
- 24:28the other day. You got something out of him now
- 24:30what what more can you get out of him?
- 24:32And so again, I think this that that that that passing game and
- 24:36you know, with Reese banner, see what what are they do with Kate
- 24:38and wheech in here in the next couple weeks.
- 24:40Keep you, you know, So yeah, it exactly.
- 24:43That's why I'm like that find ways to get him the ball.
- 24:46And so again, I think now there's more options opening up
- 24:49right now for this offense as you get out of this off week,
- 24:53which I'm sure they'll probably work on some things and then get
- 24:55ready for next week. And then you start maybe seeing
- 24:58some some different things and different wrinkles out of this
- 25:01offense. And I think it's it was just a
- 25:02point of getting Gramowski comfortable, getting Van der Zee
- 25:07back now, finding out what you can do with Kate.
- 25:09And we can do all those different things.
- 25:11And I think that that this offense just kind of continues
- 25:14to evolve. Listening to Phil Parker
- 25:16yesterday, Phil's dry. You know, he's not he's not a
- 25:21guy that's going to give you, oh, look at that quote, those
- 25:23kind of things. But you could feel the
- 25:25confidence that is building with him with this group and you can
- 25:29see with the players certainly on the field.
- 25:30It's just it's incredible going back to what we saw earlier in
- 25:34the year, that first half against Rutgers and what this
- 25:36team is they're whooping people. Xavier Wampa looks like a
- 25:39different guy. They look like they have a star
- 25:41now in Zach Luttmer on that defensive backfield.
- 25:44Montgomery has looked like an improvement in the middle spot
- 25:47and the depth that they have a defensive line.
- 25:49You saw late in the game, Yosef, Vanessa, he's making plays.
- 25:52I mean, he's barely playing at this point in the year.
- 25:54It feels like Phil Parker really likes this defense.
- 25:58Again, evolution, you know, just like I was talking about with
- 26:00the offense, you're seeing this defense kind of evolve and you
- 26:03talked about the secondary and you talked about the plays that
- 26:06Xavier Wang was making, which again, I'm like you, this is
- 26:09this is the best he's played. Been there, you know, and you
- 26:13know, and you talked about Latimer and you talked about the
- 26:15lineberries. Look at Cam Buffington the other
- 26:17day, the local guy for for for me down here in southeast Iowa
- 26:21made some play, you know, made a play late in the game and he
- 26:24made some plays again. So again, he's starting, I think
- 26:27you know, there again, and you, you kind of knowing who you can
- 26:29play and who you can trust and who, you know, what you can do
- 26:32with these guys. And so again, there's an
- 26:34evolution there with this defense.
- 26:36And I think again, it's at its best right now.
- 26:39And you know, you think back to, you know, 3 or 4 weeks ago, you
- 26:42know, they're, they're not making big plays now they're
- 26:44making big plays. And so again, he's he's, he,
- 26:48this defense has grown and now he knows what he could do with
- 26:51that. You mentioned the final four
- 26:54games that they've got left. Obviously Michigan State at home
- 26:57and then Nebraska, the wrestler looks really bad.
- 27:00Oregon, if Oregon were to play USC neutral field, I think
- 27:04Oregon would win the football game.
- 27:06But just the fact that I was got to go West, does that make the
- 27:10Oregon game more of a winnable football game because of that
- 27:14variable, do you think? I I think it makes you at least
- 27:20that day in my point that you really got to get.
- 27:22I don't think you want to drop that and then have to go West.
- 27:26You know what I'm saying? It's like I think you want to I
- 27:27think you want to you want to, you know, you hope to get both,
- 27:31but at the very least the split or whatever, you know, because
- 27:34of what you've got it yet. But I, I think that, I mean,
- 27:39again, I, we always know how Iowa teams travel when they go
- 27:42West and have to play a game, you know, not a bowl game
- 27:44necessarily, but just a regular season game.
- 27:47We know what kind of trouble they've come into.
- 27:49So I just, I, that's why I don't think you want to drop that
- 27:51Oregon game. I think you want to win that
- 27:53game and, and then go West. Now you've got a lot of momentum
- 27:57at that point. So again, this is a big stretch
- 27:59coming up to them. A.
- 28:01Lot of important games. What's more likely, John, Iowa
- 28:05finishes this thing. They go four and O or they spin
- 28:08their wheels in November and they go one and three.
- 28:10What's more likely in your mind? One and three.
- 28:13One and three. Man, he's calling one of them.
- 28:16So, so you're saying Nebraska, you go, they're going to drop
- 28:19Nebraska too? Yes.
- 28:20Is that what you're saying? Yeah.
- 28:21So you're I'm going to go with, I think they go 3 and 1.
- 28:25Well, that that wasn't the question.
- 28:26You only get 2 choices. So I'm going to lean, I'm going
- 28:30to lean more towards the four now, yeah.
- 28:31I guess when you put it that way, turn they almost have to.
- 28:34And I and I hated to be a Hawkeye Homer because that was
- 28:36kind of my thought too. I think that's more likely than
- 28:391/4 and O is still unrealistic. Sure, but only one and three
- 28:44little. Yes.
- 28:45It is unrealistic, but if you can get those first two, Oh
- 28:49yeah, then yeah. So you know, so like I said, I'm
- 28:52going I'm going to lean 3 and 1. So I'm going to lean closer to
- 28:55the four and O is more likely to happen than one and threes.
- 28:59I don't see one and three happening.
- 29:01I think this is this is a really good team right now.
- 29:04And I mean it it again, health, health is always a situation
- 29:08there that that kind of determines where this goes,
- 29:10because if you start getting guys hurt and then you know, and
- 29:12then then you know, who knows what could happen.
- 29:14But as it's made, as this line up is made-up right now, I think
- 29:183 and 1 four and O is more likely.
- 29:22What am I with? Is that Guerrero taking Otani
- 29:24deep? Is is that bloody brown in the?
- 29:26Hole. I see what you're doing, Joe.
- 29:29Well, just a highlight on TV. I'm just trying to figure out
- 29:31what that is. OK, whatever.
- 29:35I still seeing Freddie Freeman hit one out in the.
- 29:38Ken didn't see that one. Yeah, I didn't see that one.
- 29:41OK, he. Didn't stay up.
- 29:42Nobody sleeps in October. I I recorded it and then ran out
- 29:46of recording because I didn't set it long enough.
- 29:48So what do you think? Obviously he's best of three.
- 29:50You got Snell tonight. You have to feel really good
- 29:52about going up against the rookie.
- 29:55And then Yamamoto on Friday, and he's been unbelievable there.
- 30:00Look, there's a reason that the Dodgers are still an
- 30:02overwhelming favorite, right? Despite the fact that it's best
- 30:04of three. Right, Yeah.
- 30:06Oh, yeah. I mean, that's that's the way I
- 30:08mean, I I really wanted him to get last night to get up to
- 30:11three and one and. And you win in front of the home
- 30:13crowd, which there is a really good story in the Athletic today
- 30:15that they've only done that one time of all their World Series
- 30:18championships, only one of them has been at home.
- 30:20Of course, that's the cool facts, you know, and that.
- 30:23That isn't it something that he still looks the way he does.
- 30:26He looks fantastic. If if if you knew he didn't have
- 30:29the arm problems, he looked like he could still keep it high, you
- 30:32know, But yeah, he looks really good.
- 30:34And, and then, I mean, it's, you know, legend.
- 30:37Obviously it's a legendary organization, but no, I like
- 30:41where they're at. I mean, it's like you said, it's
- 30:43Smelly Yamaboto. And then if it's somehow or
- 30:45another gets to game seven, well, then that's just, you
- 30:48know, you roll the dice on a night like that.
- 30:50So I like where they're at right now.
- 30:52It's just I I kind of want to win it at home, but you do it.
- 30:55I. Just like the fact that it's a
- 30:56good series job. I never thought that it would
- 30:59be, you know, I'm a Jays fan, but I I did, I expected the
- 31:02worst. I really did.
- 31:03Now we're we're tied up a two piece after four.
- 31:06Yeah, I'd sign for that. It's, it's funny my, my mood
- 31:09swings, you know, during this series, it's like after the
- 31:12first game, I hated the world and they win Game 2 and 8 is
- 31:16we're going to win this thing in 5 now.
- 31:18And then they lose last night and now I was in a foul mood
- 31:21this morning. So it just kind of, you know,
- 31:22that's just the way October goes for me.
- 31:24So fascinating stuff. It really is.
- 31:26John Bowen, Cap joining us, Associated Press for John.
- 31:29John, enjoy the weekend off for you.
- 31:31We will talk to you in a couple of weeks.
- 31:32Thank you, John Bowen Camp. All right, have a good one.
- 31:35Good to talk to you. John Bowen Camp, Associated
- 31:37Press Take time out. Mitch Holtis, the voice of the
- 31:40Kansas City Chiefs. He's next.
- 31:41Miller and Condon talking sports with you on the Iowa Sports
- 31:44Radio Network. Mary Condon, welcome back.
- 31:54Iowa Sports Radio Network. Des Moines sports station One O
- 31:576.3 KX&O Mitch Holtis is the voice of the Kansas City Chiefs.
- 32:02The Chiefs and the Bills coming up this week are conversations
- 32:06weekly conversations with Mitch Holt is sponsored by our friends
- 32:10at Papa John's throughout the state of Iowa headquartered in
- 32:13Johnston. Let's get right to Mitch.
- 32:15Monday Night Football comes and goes with the Chiefs coming out
- 32:18on top of that one as they knock off the commanders.
- 32:21I I heard, I think it was Devante Adams was on with the
- 32:24Manning brothers. He's not sure that the that the
- 32:27Chiefs even have a a playbook when it comes to the offense.
- 32:31Just I kind of get, I mean, how does Travis Kelsey get that far
- 32:35behind the defence, right? Just he's running around and
- 32:37they making plays go on the fly like, like Mahomes has drawn him
- 32:41up in the in the turf. But another great performance
- 32:45and Kelsey still got something left by the looks of things.
- 32:48Well, Ken, that single play actually brings up a excellent
- 32:53point in the fact that having all hands on deck and all of the
- 32:56speed all over the place with Roshi Rice or Hollywood Brown or
- 33:01Xavier Worthy or Burchard Smith or Taekwon Thornton, the fact
- 33:06that you now cannot so, so Kelsey on that Chuck down play
- 33:09of 38 yards stayed in the block. And so nobody's going to sit
- 33:13there and stare at him, which they would have before or
- 33:16linebacker would have stayed in the mid range.
- 33:19But they can't do that now. If you stay there, all these
- 33:22planets are flying by you. You're standing in the middle of
- 33:25the, the 100 meter dash at the at the 50m mark and they're all
- 33:29just running by you. So you have to bail out.
- 33:32Well then that allows Kelsey to chip and release and get a big
- 33:36play. So that's, that's part of the
- 33:39byproduct here. Mahomes is helped by all these
- 33:41guys coming back, but so is Kelsey.
- 33:43He's not sitting here looking at 3 human beings staring at him
- 33:46when the ball is snapped. That's an excellent point.
- 33:48Speaking of guys returning, we're still awaiting the return
- 33:51of Josh Simmons. What is the latest on that
- 33:54front? What can you tell us there?
- 33:56And hopeful that they'll get him back out there for the Buffalo
- 33:58game. Well, sometimes I'm full of
- 34:01information for you, Trent, and then there's other times I'm
- 34:05waiting like the rest of you. So I really have nothing new to
- 34:08add. Although there's just all these.
- 34:11There's positive feelings toward a return, hopefully sooner than
- 34:15later, but nothing definite as of 1248 on Wednesday.
- 34:19Sorry. The trade deadline next time we
- 34:21speak it will have come and gone now that Pacheco's on the he's
- 34:27injured. Sounds like week to week at best
- 34:29for Pacheco. So you keep hearing Breeze Hall,
- 34:32former Cyclone, Breeze Hall, now New York Jet, and The Jets
- 34:34finally got a win. You keep hearing these
- 34:37connected. We're going to hear a lot of
- 34:38stuff in the next 5 days. Will they be active?
- 34:41Will Kansas City, will Veatch and company be burning the phone
- 34:45lines? Will they be waiting for someone
- 34:46to call them? How will they approach the trade
- 34:49deadline next Tuesday, Mitch? Most everyone when they order
- 34:53Papa John's order online and have a delivery.
- 34:56But sometimes you go pick it up and when you go pick it up, you
- 34:59see the ovens all working. I will give you that analogy in
- 35:03regard to your question and the answer.
- 35:07There's just a lot of things in the oven right now.
- 35:10Now, I would tell you that Veach is aggressive, has been
- 35:15aggressive. He's always been one to be
- 35:18active at this time of year if you look at his history.
- 35:20So I would just say stay tuned. But there's there's pizzas in
- 35:23the oven here. Before that trade deadline,
- 35:26though, we have a game. It's Buffalo, and we know
- 35:28playoff is different than regular season, but a regular
- 35:31season game when you're looking down the line potentially maybe
- 35:34who hosts the game come playoff time, a lot that still hangs in
- 35:38the balance with this one. We've seen Buffalo defense has
- 35:41struggled this year, but we know they can score with anybody.
- 35:44What do you expect to see on Sunday?
- 35:47Buffaloes change the way they play.
- 35:48Now here's the dynamic of this game that's a little bit
- 35:51different. First of all, it's the 14th.
- 35:53Time that we've been there since Andy Reid and I've played them.
- 35:56I'm sorry, 14th time we played these guys since Andy Reid has
- 35:59been the head coach and that's 12 1/2 years.
- 36:01It's nuts how many, how often we've played these guys regular
- 36:05season or playoffs. But here's and this gets Ken
- 36:09involved because it's the first time that I can remember, at
- 36:12least in the last five years, the Bills have won the NFC East
- 36:15and we've won for nine years the AFC West.
- 36:18We're both looking up at somebody else in our division.
- 36:20We're looking up at the Broncos. We know how good they are and
- 36:23they're looking up at the upstart Patriots of Mike Brabel.
- 36:26So meaning this game has importance.
- 36:30It always does, but a little bit different flavor.
- 36:33Now to answer your question, Buffaloes change the way they
- 36:35play. They remind me of the adjustment
- 36:37that the Chiefs made in 22 and 23 in specific.
- 36:41In some ways 24 where this is a run centric team.
- 36:45They are last in the league, Trent, the Bills are last in the
- 36:48league in quarterback rating of throws of 20 yards or more.
- 36:53They're not humming it down the field and if they are, they're
- 36:55having a hard time completing them.
- 36:57Where they've got what they've got is James Cook and the RPO
- 37:00game, obviously with Josh Allen. And their offensive line is
- 37:04good. In fact, last week, Cook was
- 37:07only one of four backs in NFL history to have 216 yards on
- 37:11less than 20 carries. And the last time, well, Bo
- 37:15Jackson's on that list and Bobby Mitchell in 1959.
- 37:18But here's here's your stat of the morning or noontime.
- 37:21I should say of his 216 yards, James Cook 141 yards were
- 37:27without being contacted. He had 141 yards without being
- 37:31hit first. So the offensive line of Buffalo
- 37:34is really good, but this is a run centric team, even more than
- 37:38any team we played in this era of Josh Allen versus Mahomes.
- 37:41And I think they're protecting their defence.
- 37:43Their defence has struggled and we know that they were 31st
- 37:47against the run going into the Carolina game and they're right
- 37:50around 30th right now. But the Bills are #1 in the
- 37:52league in time of possession at 33 minutes and 15 seconds.
- 37:57I think Buffalo is playing now to stay on the field and protect
- 37:59their defence. But got 2 1/2 minutes left.
- 38:03I know you're preparing for a game on Monday night.
- 38:05You probably didn't see Michelle Beisner Buck in the pregame game
- 38:07show on ESP and the piece she did on Carlaftus and his
- 38:11background and his upbringing and how water polo was his first
- 38:15sport. And then he wanted to know
- 38:16anything. Maybe I'll go to become a
- 38:18basketball player. And of course that didn't work
- 38:20out. The football thing obviously
- 38:21has. Did you see it mentioned?
- 38:23Did you learn anything? I had no idea about his
- 38:25background. It was really well done, I
- 38:26thought. No, but I've done similar
- 38:30stories on him and what's really, I think, unique, and
- 38:33maybe this came up in the story, but you know, he lost his father
- 38:36when he was 12 years old. And Greek culture is that the
- 38:40oldest male must take over the family.
- 38:44And he was 12 years old at the time.
- 38:46There was a lot put on his plate way too soon.
- 38:49Now, he's an amazing human being.
- 38:51His wife is actually incredibly amazing.
- 38:54And she, you know, she was an athlete at Purdue and survived a
- 38:58crash that should have taken her life.
- 39:00But George is an amazing guy. He's gone through a lot of life
- 39:04at an early, early age. And so, yes, he's a remarkable
- 39:07human. No doubt about it.
- 39:08Let's get to Papa John's. What's going on this week?
- 39:12Trent was gone. He was at media day in Iowa.
- 39:14Now we know. You know the nickname.
- 39:15Now the Canadians gave this. They can.
- 39:18But you know his nickname, right?
- 39:19Trent. You told me and I forgot.
- 39:22I need a reminder. Papa Dippa, he's.
- 39:24PP Dippa. Yes, yes.
- 39:26Yeah, he's Tom Hayden on The Godfather, but he's Papa Dippa.
- 39:30And right now Papa John's has this Papa Dippa 4 dipping sauce
- 39:35with three new sauces. Roasted garlic Parmesan, Wait
- 39:41for it. Garlic hot honey.
- 39:45If you guys have this, you may have to be in separate studios,
- 39:48but you know, so anyway, but yeah, Papa Dippa, you're sitting
- 39:54in the studio with Papa Dippa himself.
- 39:56Indeed you are. Thank you, Bud.
- 39:57We'll talk to you. Thanks, Mitch Holtis.
- 39:59Appreciate it. Enjoy Buffalo.
- 40:01As Sunny would say, stay away from the Turnpike booth.
- 40:04Yeah, indeed. See, Joltis, the voice of the
- 40:08Kansas City Chiefs, talk to Mitch every single week, with
- 40:11the exception of the buy. What is their buy?
- 40:13They haven't had it yet. Not that I don't want to talk to
- 40:15Mitch. I'm just kind of curious.
- 40:17Do you know it's coming up? After this week.
- 40:20So they'll so we won't talk to Mitch for a couple of weeks.
- 40:22Yeah, we should just mention that.
- 40:25All right, we'll talk to Cappy next.
- 40:26Hope you can stick around with this Miller and Condon talking
- 40:29sports with you on Des Moines Sports Station 106.3 KXNO.
