Speaker 3: on the show. Of course, the announcement came down yesterday
• 2:06
Speaker 3: at about eleven fifty or so on talk Line that
• 2:10
Speaker 3: Hoppy Kerchieval will be retiring as host of talk Line.
• 2:15
Speaker 3: We're going to be talking about that a little bit,
• 2:18
Speaker 3: I will say, programming note. Hoppy is going to join
• 2:20
Speaker 3: me on the show top of the show tomorrow to
• 2:23
Speaker 3: talk about that. But knowing Hoppy as I do, I
• 2:28
Speaker 3: don't know that he's going to want to spend a
• 2:29
Speaker 3: whole lot of time talking about it. In general. I
• 2:32
Speaker 3: think it's going to be pretty much business as usual
• 2:34
Speaker 3: till he finally hangs it up for good on January third. Now,
• 2:37
Speaker 3: Hoppy is going to be around. He's going to be
• 2:39
Speaker 3: continued doing three Guys and doing select commentaries and so
• 2:42
Speaker 3: on and so forth. It's not totally going away. He's
• 2:45
Speaker 3: just stepping away from the hosting duties on talk Line
• 2:49
Speaker 3: on a daily basis. Gonna be replaced by TJ. Meadows
• 2:52
Speaker 3: and Dave Wilson. Takes two to replace the goat. So
• 2:56
Speaker 3: we'll talk to Hopy about it tomorrow, but I'll kind
• 2:58
Speaker 3: of give my thoughts on a little bit later on.
• 3:01
Speaker 3: Also on the show, Caylen George and Brian Dayton from
• 3:04
Speaker 3: the West Virginia Chamber of Commerce will join us as
• 3:06
Speaker 3: we head into the year twenty twenty five. What can
• 3:08
Speaker 3: we expect from the business world in West Virginia. We're
• 3:11
Speaker 3: going to kind of review things in twenty twenty four
• 3:13
Speaker 3: and give a preview of twenty twenty five with Kaylin
• 3:16
Speaker 3: and Brian from the Chamber of Commerce coming up. Plus
• 3:19
Speaker 3: we've got several other things of the news I want
• 3:21
Speaker 3: to get to. But as always, your calls and text

Speaker 3: as we are pleased to have her from time to time.
• 3:36
Speaker 3: She is with us right now talking about doctor Casey
• 3:39
Speaker 3: Sachs of Bridge Valley to give us an update on
• 3:41
Speaker 3: some things going on at one of the fine sponsors
• 3:43
Speaker 3: of the show, Doctor Casey Sacks. Welcome to the show
• 3:46
Speaker 3: and early I guess Mary early Christmas or early Mary Christmas.
• 3:49
Speaker 5: Right, Thank you, James, Good morning, Merry.
• 3:52
Speaker 3: Christmas to you too, Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas and all
• 3:54
Speaker 3: the stuff that goes along with I want to spend
• 3:56
Speaker 3: a little time doctor Sachs talking about healthcare training Bridge Valley.
• 4:00
Speaker 3: There is now a radiology technology program available at Bridge Valley,
• 4:05
Speaker 3: and you're about to get into what I understand the
• 4:08
Speaker 3: biggest paramedic and nursing programs ever in the new year.
• 4:12
  Speaker 3: Is that right?
• 4:13
Speaker 5: Yes to all of the things. WVU Medicine Thomas Hospital
• 4:18
Speaker 5: asked for a rad tech program. They said, we really
• 4:21
Speaker 5: need to hire people and can you please figure this out.
• 4:24
Speaker 5: So we brought in somebody who has thirty years of
• 4:28
Speaker 5: experience in the field. It's a partnership with WVU Medicine
• 4:31
Speaker 5: Thomas Hospital. They're paying half the salary for our faculty.
• 4:35
Speaker 5: So it's a really terrific partnership because it allows us
• 4:38
Speaker 5: to hire somebody who's really good and has all of
• 4:40
Speaker 5: that industry experience who can train folks up. We'll be
• 4:44
Speaker 5: doing all the hands on training right at the hospital
• 4:47
Speaker 5: here in town, and that's been a huge help because
• 4:50
Speaker 5: it's meant that we didn't have to buy things like
• 4:53
Speaker 5: X ray machines that can be very costly. So it's
• 4:56
Speaker 5: a terrific partnership. We're really excited for our students. It
• 4:59
Speaker 5: means get to train on the actual equipment that they'll
• 5:02
Speaker 5: end up working with and so we're very excited about that.
• 5:06
Speaker 5: Have had lots of interest from the community, and we'll
• 5:10
Speaker 5: start running our first students in the spring.
• 5:13
Speaker 3: And I understand as part of this because you know,
• 5:16
Speaker 3: the fifteen year old boy in me. Anytime that I
• 5:19
Speaker 3: read notes and I read press releases, I just go,
• 5:22
Speaker 3: you know, into a total comedic frame of mind. Mannequins.
• 5:28
Speaker 3: You under you got new mannequins. How did I not
• 5:32
Speaker 3: get this job? Doctor Sachs.
• 5:33
Speaker 5: Yeah, so the fifteen year old boy, and you should
• 5:36
Speaker 5: come visit them. You might remember and your listeners might
• 5:39
Speaker 5: remember that we have a nursing wing here at Bridge
• 5:42
Speaker 5: Valley that is a simulated hospital that students in healthcare
• 5:46
Speaker 5: settings can do a lot of their clinical experiences in
• 5:49
Speaker 5: a simulation. So we want that simulation to be authentic.
• 5:52
Speaker 5: So we've always, at least as long as I've been around,
• 5:55
Speaker 5: we've had mannequins that can do things like give birth,
• 5:57
Speaker 5: which is pretty incredible. These new ones, Dave, you wouldn't
• 6:01
Speaker 5: believe it. They have age spots on their skin, every
• 6:05
Speaker 5: hair follicle looks real. I went in and saw the
• 6:08
Speaker 5: three new ones who we have, and they kind of
• 6:10
Speaker 5: creep you out because it seems like you have a
• 6:12
Speaker 5: person asleep in your hospitaling.
• 6:16
Speaker 3: That's as I said, doctor Sex, you just got to
• 6:19
Speaker 3: kind of look over me sometimes because that's that's just
• 6:21
Speaker 3: where my mind goes. And the fund I would have
• 6:24
Speaker 3: with mannequins and put them into different positions. But in
• 6:27
Speaker 3: all seriousness, these things that you're talking about, with the
• 6:31
Speaker 3: healthcare trainings of various types that you have a bridge Valley,
• 6:34
Speaker 3: none of these things would be possible if you did
• 6:37
Speaker 3: not have the partnerships that you have with groups like
• 6:40
Speaker 3: and I'm just going to mention a few like WVU
• 6:42
Speaker 3: Medicine and CAMC, which you kind of alluded to that
• 6:45
Speaker 3: a little bit earlier. Without those folks, none of this
• 6:47
  Speaker 3: is possible.
• 6:48
Speaker 5: It's true. Both hospitals in the area are phenomenal. CAMC
• 6:51
Speaker 5: has been a wonderful partner. We couldn't do our clinical
• 6:54
Speaker 5: rotations without them. Each healthcare provider has played such a
• 7:00
Speaker 5: role in letting us grow the programs. And I think
• 7:02
Speaker 5: to your first point, we're really seeing that in enrollment
• 7:05
Speaker 5: that are Spring enrollment for both our nursing class and
• 7:08
Speaker 5: our paramedic class have never been this big before. We're
• 7:10
Speaker 5: seeing eighty people start the paramedic program in the spring,
• 7:14
Speaker 5: which is unheard of, and we're so excited because there's
• 7:16
Speaker 5: just such a critical need in the community.
• 7:19
Speaker 3: Talking again with doctor Casey Sachs of Bridge Valley, it
• 7:21
Speaker 3: is nine to fourteen to day Valance Show and five
• 7:23
Speaker 3: any live brownsh you departed by Pinnacle Consultants. They're lead
• 7:26
Speaker 3: Paint Inspection and Risk Assessment services are designed to identify
• 7:30
Speaker 3: to assess the presence of lead based paints and buildings
• 7:32
Speaker 3: and other structures using a three phase approach of inspection, sampling,
• 7:36
Speaker 3: the lab analysis, and assessment report and more of Visit
• 7:39
Speaker 3: Pinnacle Corp dot net because what you don't know can
• 7:42
Speaker 3: hurt you. And anytime that you're on the show, you're
• 7:44
Speaker 3: on with me a couple of times, doctor Sacks, we
• 7:46
Speaker 3: talk about we spend a lot of time talking about
• 7:48
Speaker 3: things that you do for the healthcare community and turning
• 7:50
Speaker 3: out folks that are they're sorely needed in West Virginia
• 7:55
Speaker 3: for a variety of reasons, not the least of which
• 7:58
Speaker 3: is the fact that West Virginia is the oldest in
• 8:00
Speaker 3: the nation and with that comes health issues. You know,
• 8:03
Speaker 3: to get these people trained and they put in the
• 8:05
Speaker 3: hospitals or health care facilities we buy and large. We
• 8:08
Speaker 3: have a very very blue collar workforce, which leads to
• 8:11
Speaker 3: a lot of injuries and things of that nature. So
• 8:14
Speaker 3: it's very important that we get these students trained up
• 8:18
Speaker 3: and get them out there on the front lines.
• 8:20
Speaker 5: It's true, and we really believe in healthcare as a ladder.
• 8:24
Speaker 5: So when you talk to folks in the industry, they say,
• 8:27
Speaker 5: you know, even when you're young, be a sixteen year
• 8:30
Speaker 5: old paramedic and then move on from being a paramedic
• 8:34
Speaker 5: like we've seen Senator Chakubo do. He started out as
• 8:37
Speaker 5: a paramedic and we've seen what's happened in his career trajectory,
• 8:41
Speaker 5: and so we really see that that's possible for people.
• 8:44
Speaker 5: And we have some great examples right here in our
• 8:46
Speaker 5: community of people who have been able to start out
• 8:48
Speaker 5: in healthcare and really work their way up, and we
• 8:51
Speaker 5: want that for all of our students in the region.
• 8:53
Speaker 3: Doctor Casey Sachsbridge Valley. Before we let you go, this
• 8:56
Speaker 3: will be the final time you and I will be talking.
• 8:58
Speaker 3: In the year twenty twenty four, I put a bow
• 9:00
Speaker 3: on no pun intended on the year that was twenty
• 9:03
Speaker 3: twenty four for Bridge.
• 9:04
Speaker 5: Valley Oh my gosh, it's been such a great year.
• 9:07
Speaker 5: You know. I was just looking at our outcome numbers
• 9:10
Speaker 5: and we've grown forty three percent since I started in
• 9:13
Speaker 5: twenty one. This has been a great year. I've got
• 9:16
Speaker 5: a phenomenal team in place. We have some really solid
• 9:19
Speaker 5: programs for students. I think healthcare, IT and manufacturing have
• 9:23
Speaker 5: all been banner programs for us. And we are so
• 9:26
Speaker 5: proud of the workforce that we're able to turn out
• 9:28
Speaker 5: for the Kanaw Valley.
• 9:30
Speaker 3: And I'll give you the final, as I've been doing
• 9:32
Speaker 3: a lot of my guests, my regulars on the show,
• 9:34
Speaker 3: I'll just give you the final thirty or forty seconds
• 9:36
Speaker 3: or so just to say whatever you want, what's on
• 9:38
Speaker 3: your mind as it relates to the holiday season, Wishing
• 9:41
Speaker 3: folks some merry Christmases and happy holidays and do all
• 9:44
  Speaker 3: the stuff.
• 9:44
Speaker 5: Go ahead, doctor, It's true, you know, I've seen with
• 9:47
Speaker 5: so many of my students this can be a really
• 9:49
Speaker 5: magical time of year and sometimes a really sad time
• 9:52
Speaker 5: of year for families, depending on circumstances. And I just
• 9:56
Speaker 5: I hope that folks go home and give somebody they
• 9:59
Speaker 5: love it hug and that they really have a wonderful
• 10:02
  Speaker 5: holiday season.
• 10:03
Speaker 3: All right, doctor Casey Sachs, it's always a pleasure. Hit
• 10:06
Speaker 3: up that website again for.
• 10:07
Speaker 5: The folks, it's Bridge Valley dot edu.
• 10:10
Speaker 3: All right, have a happy holiday season. We'll talk to
• 10:12
Speaker 3: you in the new year. Looking forward to it. Thanks
• 10:14
  Speaker 3: a lot.
• 10:14
Speaker 5: Thanks Dave, take care.
• 10:16
Speaker 3: You as well. Nine to seventeen. But Dave Island showing
• 10:19
Speaker 3: five Dyeline branch you apart by your hometown baseball team,
• 10:21
Speaker 3: the Charleston Dirty Birds as the Selango law Light the
• 10:24
Speaker 3: Night will continue through the holiday season over at Gomart Ballpark.
• 10:28
Speaker 3: You can check out the Dirty Birds on Facebook for
• 10:30
Speaker 3: details and get your tickets early if you're going to
• 10:34
Speaker 3: be going out. They had a one night. They had
• 10:36
Speaker 3: eleven thousand people there that came through the turnstiles. If
• 10:40
Speaker 3: you will at Gomart Ballpark this past Saturday night, I
• 10:42
Speaker 3: think it was Friday or Saturday. It's over the weekend,
• 10:45
Speaker 3: and it was the biggest single night that they've had,
• 10:48
Speaker 3: their biggest single event that they've had there. So if
• 10:51
Speaker 3: you are going ahead of time, kind of cut down
• 10:52
Speaker 3: on the wait a little bit. Just get your tickets
• 10:54
Speaker 3: ahead of time. Go to the website Dblightthnight dot com.
• 10:58
Speaker 3: dB Light the Night dot Com. I got a text
• 11:02
Speaker 3: here from TJ Meadows, who is and I don't care.
• 11:05
Speaker 3: I don't think he would care for me throwing this
• 11:07
Speaker 3: out there. TJ, of course, along with Dave Wilson, will
• 11:09
Speaker 3: be taking over in the new year the hosting duties
• 11:12
Speaker 3: for talk Line. TJ said, I think we're actually short
• 11:15
Speaker 3: of person or two to backfill the goat. As I said,
• 11:18
Speaker 3: it takes two people to replace Hoppy Kerchival. He's right,
• 11:22
Speaker 3: It's gonna take a whole lot more because people don't
• 11:26
Speaker 3: realize the things that Hoppy Kerchival does behind the scenes.
• 11:29
Speaker 3: You know the guy on talk Line, you know the
• 11:31
Speaker 3: guy in the Mountaineer coverage, you know the guy that's
• 11:33
Speaker 3: on three Guys. You don't know the other stuff that
• 11:36
Speaker 3: Hoppy Kerchival does. I told this story when I was
• 11:40
Speaker 3: setting in for Coop on Hotline with Weekly yesterday. One
• 11:43
Speaker 3: of my best Hoppy Kerchival stories only happened a couple
• 11:46
Speaker 3: of years ago, and Hoppy was in town covering the legislature.
• 11:50
Speaker 3: A few of us, myself included, were over at the
• 11:53
Speaker 3: Conlo Seman Convention Center gearing up for the Reds Caravan,
• 11:56
Speaker 3: and we had a massive apartment fire. You remember the
• 11:57
Speaker 3: big apartment fire we had in Charleston couple of years ago.
• 12:01
Speaker 3: First person on the scene, or one of the first
• 12:03
Speaker 3: people to uh to to to, as we say in
• 12:06
Speaker 3: the business to cut up the audio was Hoppy Kerchival.
• 12:11
Speaker 3: Once a news guy, always a news guy, and that
• 12:13
Speaker 3: always stuck out to me. Here's the guy who is
• 12:17
Speaker 3: the most powerful broadcaster in the history of the state
• 12:21
Speaker 3: of West Virginia and still at the top of his game,
• 12:24
Speaker 3: which she's still at the top of his game now
• 12:25
Speaker 3: as far as I'm concerned, and he sees the need,
• 12:28
Speaker 3: he sees that we're a little short staff because we're
• 12:30
Speaker 3: covering other things. And you know, back in the old days,
• 12:33
Speaker 3: I would have say he grabbed his tape recorder, but
• 12:35
Speaker 3: he grabbed his phone and a legal pad and went
• 12:38
Speaker 3: out there and covered it. Was doing live updates. That's who.
• 12:42
Speaker 3: That's who Hoppy Curchival is. Tex says, so Hoppy is
• 12:46
Speaker 3: retiring and being replaced with MAGA man Dave, that's Dave
• 12:50
Speaker 3: Wilson they're referring to, and AEP employee TJ. Meadows. Sounds
• 12:54
Speaker 3: like talk line will be about MAGA issues and how
• 12:57
Speaker 3: AEP is the best and can't really do anything about
• 13:00
Speaker 3: rising prices. So here's your rate hike. Be happy. Well,
• 13:03
Speaker 3: let me give you a little info on mister Meadows.
• 13:04
Speaker 3: Mister Meadows is retiring from that role, so at no
• 13:08
Speaker 3: time will at no time will he be an employee
• 13:12
Speaker 3: of AEP's best to understand it and also of WVRC Media,
• 13:16
Speaker 3: so the two will not I can't speak for Dave Wilson.
• 13:20
Speaker 3: Dave Wilson, it's far from being a MAGA guy. I
• 13:22
Speaker 3: can tell you that, Texas, Dave. I listened to the
• 13:25
Speaker 3: show yesterday. On the podcast, you said you'd be getting
• 13:28
Speaker 3: into the CEO shooting. I didn't hear anything beyond shooting
• 13:30
Speaker 3: rich people's bad Editor's note it is or anybody for
• 13:34
Speaker 3: that matter. No discussion people building generational wealth by denying
• 13:38
Speaker 3: their countrymen the health care they paid for. No discussion
• 13:41
Speaker 3: of the amount of resources used to catch this guy,
• 13:44
Speaker 3: as poor people's murders left unsolved. I appreciate you illuminating
• 13:48
Speaker 3: the media's complicity in the two tiered system that's for
• 13:51
Speaker 3: the wealthy and everywhere else. All I said was is
• 13:54
Speaker 3: that if you are a person, in my opinion, that
• 13:58
Speaker 3: is glorifying the death of this. You are a terrible,
• 14:01
Speaker 3: terrible human being. That's all I said. My opinion. Nobody
• 14:05
Speaker 3: else Texas Dave, You and t J are both wrong, copies,
• 14:09
Speaker 3: irreplaceable he is he is. Two guys are gonna step
• 14:15
Speaker 3: into that role. But if you think you're gonna replace
• 14:17
Speaker 3: Hoppy kerchfall not gonna Happen's could be a totally well.
• 14:21
Speaker 3: I say, look, I don't want to give away too much.
• 14:23
Speaker 3: I'll let them do that. It's going to be talk line,
• 14:26
Speaker 3: but it's gonna be a little bit different because you
• 14:27
Speaker 3: have different personalities. I took over for the show for
• 14:30
Speaker 3: the Great Danny Jones in twenty twenty, and the show
• 14:33
Speaker 3: that I do is not what the show the Danny
• 14:35

• 18:59
Speaker 3: Brian Dayton and Kaylen George are here from the West

Speaker 3: things with him. Welcome to the show, Brian. I'll start

Speaker 3: with you, since you're the veteran here, I'll start with you.
• 19:09
Speaker 9: Well, Dave, it's absolutely great to be here in awesome

Speaker 9: been on since you've moved into the new location.
• 19:15
Speaker 3: And this is only the transition studio because the new
• 19:18
Speaker 3: studio is actually going to be where the old studio was.
• 19:20
Speaker 3: This is kind of the trend, but it is. It's
• 19:22
Speaker 3: kind of cool, it's little cozy.
• 19:24
Speaker 9: And it is You'll have to have me back there
• 19:26
Speaker 9: so I can no right, I.
• 19:28
Speaker 3: Don't need you because I've got Kaylen George. How are you, Kalen?
• 19:31
  Speaker 10: Hey, good morning.
• 19:32
Speaker 3: Thanks for having Caitlyn tell everybody knows Brian Dayton and
• 19:35
Speaker 3: what he does. He his old news. Let's talk about you,
• 19:37
Speaker 3: and let's talk about what you do with the organization.
• 19:40
Speaker 10: Hey, I like the way you put things. I'm Kaylen George,
• 19:44
Speaker 10: director of Communications for the West Virginia Chamber and happy
• 19:47
Speaker 10: to be here this morning.
• 19:48
Speaker 3: It's so great to have I and Brian and I
• 19:49
Speaker 3: are actually great for it's my lunch buddy over here.
• 19:52
Speaker 3: You're turned by by the.
• 19:53
Speaker 9: Way, Ah, fine, I'll mark it down.
• 19:55
Speaker 3: It's actually not I just wanted to see if I
• 19:57
Speaker 3: could get that by you. All right, So, guys, I
• 20:00
Speaker 3: had current a Senate Finance Chair Eric Tarr and the
• 20:03
Speaker 3: show yesterday, and he's quite optimistic, as are others, that
• 20:07
Speaker 3: even more economic developments and announcements are going to be
• 20:10
Speaker 3: coming to the Mountains, to the Mountain state of the
• 20:12
Speaker 3: new year. The state's economic development authorities meeting today. As
• 20:16
Speaker 3: a matter of fact, just kind of a major generic
• 20:21
Speaker 3: question here your thoughts on the future of West Virginia
• 20:25
Speaker 3: as we move into twenty twenty five. Bryan, I'll start
• 20:27
  Speaker 3: with you. Sure.
• 20:28
Speaker 9: So, we have seen some really awesome announcements come into
• 20:31
Speaker 9: West Virginia over this year, the past several years, and
• 20:35
Speaker 9: that's been giving us some good reason for optimism. What
• 20:39
Speaker 9: I would say is though, that we cannot take our
• 20:41
Speaker 9: foot off the gas pedal when it comes to West Virginia.
• 20:43
Speaker 9: We just actually today in our office we're discussing the
• 20:47
Speaker 9: employment numbers that just came out for November. Right now,
• 20:50
Speaker 9: as it looks, we're probably going to end twenty twenty
• 20:53
Speaker 9: four with fewer jobs than we had in twenty twenty three.
• 20:56
Speaker 9: I'm not trying to go ahead and send everybody off
• 20:58
Speaker 9: on a bad Christmas spirit. Christmas, yes, but it's in
• 21:02
Speaker 9: our view something that we have to remember. We have
• 21:05
Speaker 9: to keep focusing on workforce, better education, more access to childcare,
• 21:10
Speaker 9: and those things that are going to go ahead and
• 21:12
Speaker 9: enable more businesses to come here, to grow those who
• 21:15
Speaker 9: are already here to continue doing well and expand their
• 21:18
Speaker 9: operations and get more people into West Virginia. You know,
• 21:22
Speaker 9: one of the one of the key things that we
• 21:24
Speaker 9: have been watching over the number of years is domestic migration.
• 21:28
Speaker 9: Now these that's people moving from state to state. We've
• 21:31
Speaker 9: been positive on that for a few years now, not
• 21:33
Speaker 9: by a Laura, but we have been positive. But our
• 21:36
Speaker 9: population has continued to declimb because we've continued to have
• 21:38
Speaker 9: more deaths than births.
• 21:40
  Speaker 3: And we're old yeah, I mean old state. It's a
• 21:43
  Speaker 3: hard state.
• 21:44
Speaker 9: So those are things. So I do think there is
• 21:46
Speaker 9: room for optimism. But I also would just say when
• 21:50
Speaker 9: our policymakers are convening in February for a sixty day session,
• 21:54
Speaker 9: we have to keep the eye on the ball. We
• 21:56
Speaker 9: have to keep focusing on jobs and economic development and
• 21:59
Speaker 9: bacon making this a better place to live, work, and
• 22:02
  Speaker 9: raise a family.
• 22:03
Speaker 3: Talking to Brian Dayton and Kaylin George from the West
• 22:06
Speaker 3: Virginia Chamber of Commerce, Guys, I was reading that you
• 22:09
Speaker 3: folks developed a new redesigned website and it recently won
• 22:14
Speaker 3: a coveted award. Kaitlin, I'll let you, Kaitlin, I'll let
• 22:16
Speaker 3: you talk about that.
• 22:18
  Speaker 7: Thank you.
• 22:19
Speaker 10: Yeah, we were really excited. We were extra busy this
• 22:22
Speaker 10: summer rolling out a new website as at the same
• 22:25
Speaker 10: time as the business summit. It was made here right
• 22:27
Speaker 10: in West Virginia by West Virginia designers, and it's something
• 22:30
Speaker 10: that we're really proud about. It recently did win a
• 22:33
Speaker 10: national design award from Graphic Design USA, and this was
• 22:37
Speaker 10: we designed a new website with the goal to better
• 22:40
Speaker 10: service our members and the business community at large.
• 22:43
Speaker 3: What is it that made this website so highly awardable
• 22:47
Speaker 3: for lack of better I mean, what was it that
• 22:49
Speaker 3: won the award for you?
• 22:50
Speaker 10: Yeah, I think that we had a great team of designers.
• 22:53
Speaker 10: There's so much talent right here in West Virginia. You
• 22:55
Speaker 10: really don't have to go anywhere else. But some of
• 22:58
Speaker 10: the new features that we rolled out an interactive resource center,
• 23:02
Speaker 10: advocacy tracking legislative updates, business education. It's really a one
• 23:06
Speaker 10: stop shop for the business community.

Speaker 3: I want to go back to a couple of big
• 23:26
Speaker 3: events that you all are known for. Your big event,
• 23:30
Speaker 3: of course, is the Business Summit, which is held each
• 23:32
Speaker 3: summer into summer August right Wednesday, Thursday, Friday before Labor Day, Okay,
• 23:37
Speaker 3: always always the same down at the Greenbrier. And you
• 23:40
Speaker 3: also had a Women's Summit as well. Talk about these
• 23:43
Speaker 3: talk about these recent events that you guys put on.
• 23:45
Speaker 3: I say, racing those last couple of months, but we
• 23:47
Speaker 3: can still talk about it, so go ahead.
• 23:49
Speaker 10: Yeah, the Business Summit and the Women's Leadership Summit. This
• 23:53
Speaker 10: year we both had record breaking numbers from attendance to sponsorships,
• 23:57
Speaker 10: to the number of speakers and investments, and it really
• 24:01
Speaker 10: was just incredible to see it unfold throughout the year.
• 24:04
Speaker 10: At the Business Summit, of course, we had the governor,
• 24:06
Speaker 10: governor elect, we had the Canadian ambassador, both US senators,
• 24:10
Speaker 10: Representative Carol Miller, and over two dozen influential businesses that
• 24:15
Speaker 10: were showcased on the maiden stage talking about their investments
• 24:18
Speaker 10: and contributions to the state's economy. There really is a
• 24:22
Speaker 10: buzz in the year at the Greenbrier during the Business Summit.
• 24:25
Speaker 10: It's become a catalyst for business growth and economic development news.
• 24:29
Speaker 10: So that's something we're really proud of. And the Women's
• 24:32
Speaker 10: Leadership Summit. I might be a little biased, but I
• 24:35
Speaker 10: think it's one of our best events of the year.
• 24:37
Speaker 3: It was she the one that put it on. Was
• 24:39
Speaker 3: she the main person behind it?
• 24:41
Speaker 9: She and Kathy Thomas a phenomenal job of putting out
• 24:44
Speaker 9: They just leave you out, you know, yeah, all right,
• 24:47
Speaker 9: good do other things.
• 24:48
Speaker 10: Yeah yeah, Kathy's the one who actually initiated it, and
• 24:51
Speaker 10: I was so happy to be on board and work
• 24:54
Speaker 10: on the event as well. And again it had over
• 24:57
Speaker 10: five hundred attendees, bringing women leaders together from across West Virginia,
• 25:02
Speaker 10: including CEOs, professionals, students, and public servants. We do a
• 25:07
Speaker 10: philanthropy project each year. This year it was for YMCA
• 25:10
Speaker 10: summer camps across the state of West Virginia. So we
• 25:13
Speaker 10: got a couple of hundred summer camp bags for kids
• 25:17
Speaker 10: going to those camps. So we were really proud about it,
• 25:21
Speaker 10: and we can't wait for this year, little plug. We
• 25:24
Speaker 10: have our Women's Leadership Summit coming up March twenty fifth
• 25:28
  Speaker 10: and twenty six.
• 25:30
Speaker 3: Okay, where is that hell.
• 25:31
Speaker 10: That is at the Greenbrier.
• 25:33
Speaker 3: Okay, Okay, we'll have you on before them to talk
• 25:35
  Speaker 3: about that.
• 25:36
Speaker 9: Go ahead and brin, you know, and I'm just going
• 25:37
Speaker 9: to add on about especially with the business Summit, it's
• 25:40
Speaker 9: really just been neat to watch that event grow year
• 25:43
Speaker 9: after year. But one of the things I heard a
• 25:46
Speaker 9: couple of years ago is one of our attendees said,
• 25:47
Speaker 9: I can get more done in three days here at
• 25:50
Speaker 9: this event than I can get done in eight months
• 25:52
Speaker 9: on the telephone, just calling.
• 25:53
Speaker 3: Telephones and emails. Yeah, it's the ultimate networking event for
• 25:56
Speaker 3: businesses in West Virginia. We're proud to be a part
• 25:58
Speaker 3: of it as well. And I'm I guess Hobby won't
• 26:01
Speaker 3: be there. He may be there. Hobby is not going
• 26:03
  Speaker 3: away totally.
• 26:05
Speaker 9: That was some pretty big news yesterday, and so it.
• 26:08
Speaker 3: Could be myself, could be TJ or mister Wilson, because
• 26:12
Speaker 3: it could be Bobby Spray, you know, one of our
• 26:15
Speaker 3: people for most airs. You never know. Let's talk about
• 26:19
Speaker 3: the launch of something that you call the twenty first
• 26:22
Speaker 3: Century Competitiveness Agenda. What is this?
• 26:25
Speaker 9: So this is really what we listen to our members
• 26:28
Speaker 9: and find out from them what do they need to
• 26:30
Speaker 9: continue moving West Virginia forward. What do they need to
• 26:32
Speaker 9: grow and become more capable to provide more jobs, more
• 26:36
Speaker 9: opportunity in the state. So just going back to what
• 26:38
Speaker 9: we kind of opened the show with talking about West Virginia,
• 26:41
Speaker 9: the reasons for optimism, but needing to keep the foot
• 26:44
Speaker 9: on the gas. This is the plan, this is what
• 26:46
Speaker 9: we've come together and some of the real key points workforce,
• 26:51
Speaker 9: better education, more childcare. Just to go ahead and remind people,
• 26:56
Speaker 9: west Virginia is forty ninth in workforce participation, were fiftieth
• 27:00
Speaker 9: and then Mississippi actually jumped in and got underneath of us.
• 27:04
Speaker 9: But that's a real concern for us because that workforce
• 27:08
Speaker 9: participation that counts the people who are currently employed, and
• 27:11
Speaker 9: it also counts the people who were unemployed but on unemployment.
• 27:15
Speaker 9: But after a certain period of time, if you're not
• 27:17
Speaker 9: on unemployment and you're not employed, you just drop out
• 27:19
Speaker 9: of the workforce altogether. And so really looking to go
• 27:23
Speaker 9: ahead and boost that up. We are significantly behind the
• 27:26
Speaker 9: US average, I mean, almost seven eight points behind the
• 27:29
Speaker 9: US average on workforce participation.
• 27:31
Speaker 3: But we're think, let me jump in. I think it's
• 27:33
Speaker 3: very important when you talk about workforce participation. And I've
• 27:37
Speaker 3: talked about how West Virginia is the oldest state in
• 27:39
Speaker 3: the nation. You've got to make a distinction here, Brian
• 27:41
Speaker 3: and calin because this is what we call able body people,
• 27:45
Speaker 3: not of retirement age, you know, not our seasoned citizens
• 27:50
Speaker 3: as Rustling Ball used to call them. Not them, We're
• 27:52
Speaker 3: talking about able body people that should normally be able
• 27:55
  Speaker 3: to work.
• 27:57
Speaker 9: Yes, okay, yeah, And just to go ahead, and what
• 28:01
Speaker 9: that definition really does, to get real technical, it's basically
• 28:04
Speaker 9: anybody over sixteen who's not institutionalized. So yes, what I
• 28:08
Speaker 9: would say is our older population does play into that
• 28:11
Speaker 9: number a little bit, but that's not everything that's playing
• 28:13
Speaker 9: into it. We can't sit there and blame our low
• 28:15
Speaker 9: workforce participation solely on that. So what do we blame
• 28:18
Speaker 9: it on you know, I think it's been we've seen
• 28:21
Speaker 9: a changing economy in West Virginia. I think we've seen
• 28:24
Speaker 9: a lot of jobs that were very traditional that have
• 28:26
Speaker 9: gone away, and we haven't been able, we haven't looked
• 28:29
Speaker 9: in the past to diversify ourselves to get ready for that,
• 28:32
Speaker 9: and so that's been something that's been a big push.
• 28:34
Speaker 9: I've been very encouraged to see the different types of
• 28:37
Speaker 9: businesses that we've been recruiting into West Virginia because I
• 28:40
Speaker 9: think that diversity in our economy is going to be
• 28:43
Speaker 9: very very important, so that that way, whenever a particular
• 28:46
Speaker 9: sector has a bad year, it doesn't have as big
• 28:48
Speaker 9: of an impact on the state.
• 28:51
  Speaker 11: You know.
• 28:51
Speaker 9: One of the other keys that we're really looking at
• 28:53
Speaker 9: is childcare. We have a lot of people in West
• 28:55
Speaker 9: Virginia right now who could be working if they could
• 28:58
Speaker 9: have access to a four ortable, high quality childcare. It's
• 29:01
Speaker 9: a major issue in West Virginia. Three quarters of our
• 29:04
  Speaker 9: members are telling us it's a it's a major issue
• 29:07
Speaker 9: for them in attracting and retaining workers. So those are
• 29:10
Speaker 9: some of the things we're looking at, and how do
• 29:12
Speaker 9: we help address that issue and move us through.
• 29:15
Speaker 3: Is this going to be the year. And I know
• 29:17
Speaker 3: you don't have a crystal ball, Brian and Klem, but
• 29:20
Speaker 3: what we have a new legislature coming in, well, I
• 29:22
Speaker 3: mean some of the We have new leadership at least
• 29:25
Speaker 3: on in the Senate as as Randy Smith is going
• 29:29
Speaker 3: to be the new Senate leader. We know that the
• 29:31
Speaker 3: double and Hanshaw will continue in the House, but we
• 29:33
Speaker 3: have some new delegates coming in. We have as far
• 29:38
Speaker 3: as our constitutional officers office holders, all but one are
• 29:42
Speaker 3: going to be new, including a new governor. Is when
• 29:45
Speaker 3: are we going to get serious about this? In your
• 29:47
Speaker 3: opinion in West Virginia. I don't mean to put you
• 29:49
Speaker 3: on the spot, better mean, but you're probably echoing what
• 29:51
Speaker 3: I'm saying. When are we going to get serious about
• 29:54
Speaker 3: what a crisis that we have here in West Virginia
• 29:57
Speaker 3: when it comes to childcare. Don't even get it started
• 29:59
Speaker 3: on the foster care system, but they sometimes the two
• 30:02
Speaker 3: do kind of overlap. I mean, is it time that
• 30:05
Speaker 3: we start to get serious about this?
• 30:06
Speaker 9: So I'm optimistic. You know, the House has actually, in
• 30:10
Speaker 9: coordination with the Senate for the past years, developed a
• 30:12
Speaker 9: childcare task Force. They are meeting regularly. We've been a
• 30:15
Speaker 9: part of some of those meetings looking at what are
• 30:17
Speaker 9: the solutions to move forward. Five years ago, getting legislators
• 30:21
Speaker 9: to talk about this issue is next to impossible. Now
• 30:24
Speaker 9: it's one of the main topics. And we've been pleasantly
• 30:27
Speaker 9: surprised by some of the people serving in the legislature
• 30:30
Speaker 9: who are now saying, hey, this is one of the
• 30:32
Speaker 9: top issues. And we wouldn't have always expected that, but
• 30:36
Speaker 9: we're very pleasantly surprised. Money is going to be an
• 30:39
Speaker 9: issue in this I mean, you're not going to be
• 30:40
Speaker 9: able to fix this issue without putting significant resources into it.
• 30:44
Speaker 9: So we are encouraged. Right now, we are optimistic. This
• 30:49
Speaker 9: issue has built year after year after year. Like I said,
• 30:51
Speaker 9: five years ago, getting people to talk about this was
• 30:54
Speaker 9: next to impossible. Now it's probably one of the first
• 30:56
Speaker 9: things people are bringing up when they're discussing what needs
• 30:59
Speaker 9: to be done in Ust Virginia.
• 31:01
Speaker 3: Before we let you go, you've released something called the
• 31:03
Speaker 3: Campaigns for Jobs Digest. What exactly is that, Kalen, Yeah.
• 31:08
Speaker 10: The Campaign for Jobs Digest. It basically is an economic indicator.
• 31:14
Speaker 10: It took West Virginia and it looked at us versus
• 31:17
Speaker 10: all the other states and sixty one key factors. It
• 31:20
Speaker 10: offered a detailed look at the state's business climate, highlighting
• 31:23
Speaker 10: our strengths and areas for improvement, and just going on
• 31:27
Speaker 10: what Brian said, you know, we're lucky at the Chamber
• 31:30
Speaker 10: to be supported by a membership who wants a healthier,
• 31:33
Speaker 10: better educated, and more prosperous West Virginia. And so we're
• 31:36
Speaker 10: really forward to working with everyone this legislative session. And
• 31:40
Speaker 10: I do have to make one correction. The women's leadership
• 31:42
Speaker 10: some is actually March twenty sixth and twenty seventh at
• 31:45
  Speaker 10: the Greenbrier.
• 31:46

• 31:48
Speaker 3: have you folks on before that events talk about it.
• 31:52
Speaker 3: So Brian, it's always a pleasure to have you on
• 31:54

Speaker 3: retired from AEP officially and will have liquidated any financial

Speaker 3: from covering the company or any of its regulatory filings

Speaker 3: just as I will for other utilities or companies that

• 38:39
Speaker 3: County commission Steve DeWeese got a very lenient plea deal.
• 38:43
Speaker 3: He uses fraud to steal four thousand dollars, which should
• 38:45
Speaker 3: be a felony, but he can plead to a misdemeanor.
• 38:48
Speaker 3: Republicans are tough on crime unless it's one of them.
• 38:50
Speaker 3: Make sure you let Crybaby Tar and Tony Hodge know
• 38:53
Speaker 3: their soft on crime policies allow crime to run rampant
• 38:57
Speaker 3: in Putnam County. Well, the very idea that crime is
• 39:00
Speaker 3: running rampant in Putnam County is kind of a stretch.
• 39:03
Speaker 3: I mean, I live in Putnam County and have been
• 39:05
Speaker 3: for ten years. Crime is far from running rapid. Now,
• 39:08
Speaker 3: as for the Dewicise plea deal, I'm not an attorney.
• 39:12
Speaker 3: I don't know anything about that. I know he was
• 39:15
Speaker 3: accused and basically put in a plea that doesn't really
• 39:20
Speaker 3: have to admit guilt per se. Again, I'm not an attorney,
• 39:23
Speaker 3: but that's what he that's what he did. And now
• 39:27
Speaker 3: I was going to actually talk about this a little
• 39:28
Speaker 3: bit later on. It's up to It'll be up to
• 39:30
Speaker 3: the Putnam County Executive commission because Steve Dewese, former sheriff
• 39:35
Speaker 3: and county commissioner, did resign his position and vowed he
• 39:38
Speaker 3: would not he would not seek any more office in
• 39:43
Speaker 3: the future. And so now the Putnam count Executive Committee
• 39:47
Speaker 3: will have to choose the replacement because the two remaining commissioners,
• 39:52
Speaker 3: both Republicans and he Skidmore and Brian Ellis, were unable
• 39:55
Speaker 3: to reach a decision as to a due a point.
• 39:57
Speaker 3: So now it goes back to the executive Committee. There
• 40:02
Speaker 3: are twenty one names, I think, and Aaron Parker, by
• 40:04
Speaker 3: the way, he's got a story posted about a WV
• 40:06
Speaker 3: Metro news dot com. There is a story posted about

Speaker 3: it about the whole process that the Executive Committee, of

• 40:14

• 40:18
Speaker 3: back to as Harvey Payton talked about on the show
• 40:21
Speaker 3: last hour, almost like a jury situation, where they will
• 40:24
Speaker 3: send the list back to the two commissioners skid Moore
• 40:27
Speaker 3: and Ellis, and then they will strike until they can
• 40:29
  Speaker 3: finally reach a decision. I don't think that there's somebody
• 40:32
Speaker 3: again who's very close to all these people. I don't
• 40:34
Speaker 3: think there's a whole lot of discourse, to be honest
• 40:36
Speaker 3: with you, I think it's just they're trying to get
