- 0:00Speaker 1: This production is brought to you by the Recess Bell
- 0:08Speaker 1: All right, Hi everybody, this is Film Reel right here
- 0:11Speaker 1: on the Recess Bell Network. My name is Justin and
- 0:13Speaker 1: joining me on today's program is my good pal Jonathan.
- 0:17Speaker 1: How's it going, John?
- 0:18Speaker 2: What's going? How are you?
- 0:20Speaker 1: I'm good, I'm great, I'm wonderful. I met Jonathan probably,
- 0:26Speaker 1: I don't know, maybe like a year or so ago
- 0:28Speaker 1: because of his girlfriend Jackie, who's like a fantastic bowler.
- 0:32Speaker 1: And now I've joined John's bowling league and sorted to
- 0:36Speaker 1: get to know Jonathan here and there. But I don't
- 0:38Speaker 1: know too much about Jonathan. And we got to introduce
- 0:41Speaker 1: the audience of the film Reel to Jonathan. So I
- 0:44Speaker 1: got some questions for you. First of all, do you
- 0:46Speaker 1: go by Jonathan or John? Johnny?
- 0:48Speaker 2: You?
- 0:48Speaker 1: What do you normally go by Jonathan?
- 0:50Speaker 2: Right, Jonathan or a lot of times? I just introduced
- 0:53Speaker 2: myself as John. But Jonathan's fine, John's fine.
- 0:56Speaker 1: We're going with Jonathan, all right. So Jonathan, we got
- 1:00Speaker 1: to know about your childhood quickly quickly when you were
- 1:03Speaker 1: growing up. All time favorite cartoon as a kid where
- 1:07Speaker 1: you're a Ninja Turtles guy or you a he man guy, Transformers,
- 1:10Speaker 1: What was your thing?
- 1:11Speaker 2: ThunderCats?
- 1:12Speaker 1: ThunderCats?
- 1:13Speaker 3: Oh it's when Wiley, Kat and Kidd are pretending to
- 1:19Speaker 3: be the most helpful that they're dropping their pens on
- 1:22Speaker 3: the thing while I'm talking, let's find the Megacan Dancer.
- 1:25Speaker 3: I'm saying that too fast. Let's find the Megacan Dancer.
- 1:28Speaker 3: Still going too fast?
- 1:29Speaker 2: What's wrong, Lionel?
- 1:31Speaker 3: Fuck? Here it is again?
- 1:33Speaker 2: What's here again?
- 1:35Speaker 3: That thing? That that mega thing?
- 1:37Speaker 2: Want me to say?
- 1:37Speaker 1: Yes, you know I met the voice of Lionel a
- 1:43Speaker 1: few times at local conventions, Larry Kenny. He also did
- 1:47Speaker 1: the voice of Sonny, the Cocoa Puff mascot, and the
- 1:51Speaker 1: voice of the operation commercial for the Operation Board. Oh yeah, yeah,
- 1:56Speaker 1: care a little fun fact there. Now, as far as
- 2:04Speaker 1: video games growing up, dude, you play video games now
- 2:06Speaker 1: at all?
- 2:06Speaker 2: Or no? I have a PS four. I go in
- 2:11Speaker 2: and out, like I'll play for a couple months and
- 2:12Speaker 2: then I won't turn it on for a couple months.
- 2:16Speaker 2: I really like the uncharted games. My buddy turned me
- 2:19Speaker 2: on to those. Those are fun, not really like a
- 2:23Speaker 2: sports even though I love sports to play myself. It
- 2:27Speaker 2: was never like a big Madden guy.
- 2:29Speaker 1: No, Oh, what about back in the day, like NBA Jam,
- 2:31Speaker 1: NFL Blitz.
- 2:32Speaker 2: NBA Jam. Yes, yeah, like because those are more like
- 2:34Speaker 2: fun arcades. No, yeah, exactly, not like you're trying to
- 2:38Speaker 2: actually run, you know, NFL offenses and defenses.
- 2:41Speaker 1: Oh my god, these games have become so just overcomplicated,
- 2:46Speaker 1: especially you know controllers. Now I sound like an old man,
- 2:49Speaker 1: I sound like what my dad sounded like, but it's
- 2:51Speaker 1: true because controllers now have so many buns, the R two,
- 2:54Speaker 1: L two, L three, and then you're you have to
- 2:58Speaker 1: know like how to actually run offense. You know, there's
- 3:01Speaker 1: hundreds of plays in these playbooks and Maddens. I mean,
- 3:04Speaker 1: the last time I turned on a Madden game, I
- 3:07Speaker 1: was so confused. And I'm usually playing like an NFL
- 3:10Speaker 1: blitch where you get one hundred plays off in two
- 3:12Speaker 1: minutes and it's just NonStop action. Then to go from
- 3:15Speaker 1: that to the slow, monotonous, sort of realistic style of football,
- 3:19Speaker 1: because when you break down football it can be boring
- 3:22Speaker 1: at times, it's very slow.
- 3:24Speaker 2: I actually was at the Jet game last week.
- 3:26Speaker 1: Yikes, who do you want to win? Goddamn Jets?
- 3:30Speaker 2: Normally we watched red Zone. So you're, like you said,
- 3:32Speaker 2: like an NFL blitz. You're just seeing play after play
- 3:34Speaker 2: after play from every game. When you're actually at the game,
- 3:36Speaker 2: they stand around on the field for two three minutes
- 3:39Speaker 2: at a time.
- 3:40Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean the game should be it's a sixty minutes,
- 3:43Speaker 1: sixty minute, you know time, but it goes on for
- 3:46Speaker 1: three hours, three and a half hours, depending on penalties
- 3:49Speaker 1: and just stupidness. Football can be extraordinarily boring. But uh,
- 3:53Speaker 1: back back to your childhood you mentioned sports. Who are
- 3:57Speaker 1: your teams? I feel like I always forget because you
- 4:00Speaker 1: have different teams that you like.
- 4:02Speaker 2: Yeah, we're the exact opposite Yankees, Rangers, Giants, Knicks.
- 4:07Speaker 1: So what do you think was the best moment of
- 4:10Speaker 1: your life as a fan of sports? Would it be
- 4:13Speaker 1: one of the Well, the Rangers Stanley Cup in ninety four,
- 4:16Speaker 1: would it be the Giants couple of Super Bowls? You
- 4:18Speaker 1: got to see some of those.
- 4:20Speaker 2: It's either the Rangers in ninety four or Yankees beating
- 4:25Speaker 2: the Mets. Sorry, you son of a bitch. Well, especially
- 4:29Speaker 2: because I was in college at that time and my
- 4:31Speaker 2: roommate who I had just met, was from Jersey and
- 4:34Speaker 2: he was a Met fan. So you know, we still
- 4:36Speaker 2: have the uh, you know, we were allowed to trash
- 4:39Speaker 2: talk to Mets still because they haven't beaten us in
- 4:41Speaker 2: the World Series.
- 4:43Speaker 1: No, no, no, they haven't. And I thought, you know,
- 4:45Speaker 1: if the Mets did make it to the World Series
- 4:48Speaker 1: this past year, you know, we're recording this in November
- 4:50Speaker 1: of twenty twenty four. I think if the Mets did
- 4:53Speaker 1: face the Yankees, I think they would have won.
- 4:56Speaker 2: I agree.
- 4:57Speaker 1: So let's let's get down to why we're here here
- 5:00Speaker 1: to talk about movies. I feel like every single week
- 5:03Speaker 1: I meet up with John, I meet up with Jackie,
- 5:05Speaker 1: and we talk about what movies we've seen in theaters,
- 5:08Speaker 1: and a lot of the times we have a lot
- 5:10Speaker 1: of things in common. I feel it feel like our
- 5:12Speaker 1: love for certain action movies, certain genre of films, comedies
- 5:15Speaker 1: from the nineties, we're pretty much on page. You know.
- 5:17Speaker 1: We like our Major Pains, we like our Wayne's World,
- 5:19Speaker 1: we like our Jim Carrey movies. But every now and
- 5:21Speaker 1: then I think you have one of the dumbest takes ever,
- 5:24Speaker 1: and then you think, you know, vice versa, You think
- 5:26Speaker 1: the same exact thing with me. So let's get into
- 5:29Speaker 1: what we eventually are going to get to, and that
- 5:31Speaker 1: is the great debate of Independence Day. Versus signs. That's
- 5:35Speaker 1: like the main course for this podcast for today. But
- 5:40Speaker 1: before we get to that, let's talk about some recent
- 5:42Speaker 1: movies that we've seen. I know you did see Heredic
- 5:46Speaker 1: from a few weeks ago. I enjoyed the performances. I
- 5:48Speaker 1: liked the movie. I thought it was a different type
- 5:50Speaker 1: of horror film. It wasn't your typical slash your film.
- 5:53Speaker 1: It wasn't your typical, you know, ghosts sort of paranormal activity,
- 5:57Speaker 1: exorcist type of movie. It was a different vibe for
- 6:00Speaker 1: a horror movie, which is why I enjoyed it. I
- 6:03Speaker 1: know you and Jackie felt different.
- 6:06Speaker 2: Yeah, I agree with that. I think Hugh Grant was
- 6:09Speaker 2: very good and like you said, it was more like
- 6:11Speaker 2: of a mind thriller. He was, you know, trying to
- 6:13Speaker 2: make the girls think and about what they were brought
- 6:16Speaker 2: up in as far as their religion.
- 6:18Speaker 1: Yeah, so there are Mormons that are going down to
- 6:20Speaker 1: town or door to door, and I guess this is
- 6:23Speaker 1: something that he's done for a while now because he
- 6:25Speaker 1: spoiler alert, he's a psychopath that captures women, and you
- 6:29Speaker 1: see that he's been doing this for quite some time.
- 6:31Speaker 1: But yeah, yeah, it was a different type of movie.
- 6:33Speaker 1: But what didn't you like about it? That was like
- 6:35Speaker 1: a slower type of movie or no.
- 6:37Speaker 2: So I didn't like that part that you just talked
- 6:40Speaker 2: about at the end where he has all these women
- 6:43Speaker 2: in his basement and he kind of he was trying
- 6:46Speaker 2: to with the girls like have them witness a miracle
- 6:51Speaker 2: when the one older woman was supposedly what was she
- 6:55Speaker 2: like an angel or something she was supposed to be. Yeah,
- 6:58Speaker 2: and then she ate the pie and died, and then
- 7:00Speaker 2: they figured out that she didn't come back to life,
- 7:04Speaker 2: that he just had another woman from the basement come
- 7:07Speaker 2: up and take her place. Like to me, that was
- 7:09Speaker 2: a little weird. Like I said, he was great in
- 7:12Speaker 2: the movie. And then again at the end, the one
- 7:17Speaker 2: girl is dead and she wakes up just enough to
- 7:21Speaker 2: kill you know, to smack him in the face with
- 7:23Speaker 2: that with the nail with the board with the nails
- 7:25Speaker 2: in it, and then dies it was a miracle, yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 7:30Speaker 2: But then the other girl was out. She could have
- 7:33Speaker 2: got out and then went back downstairs for whatever reason.
- 7:36Speaker 2: To me, like, I just didn't like the ending. I
- 7:39Speaker 2: didn't like that he had those women down there. It
- 7:43Speaker 2: just seemed weird to me.
- 7:44Speaker 1: I didn't think it was a masterpiece by any stretch
- 7:46Speaker 1: of the imagination. And I also feel like a lot
- 7:48Speaker 1: of movies these days are lacking with their endings. Yeah,
- 7:51Speaker 1: and I didn't think the ending was awful. I like
- 7:53Speaker 1: the movie more than you, but I do feel like
- 7:55Speaker 1: that is a trend with a lot of modern movies,
- 7:59Speaker 1: where they don't have that satisfying ending. I'm a sucker
- 8:02Speaker 1: for movies that have a feel good ending, like give
- 8:05Speaker 1: me a movie like Rocky, give me a movie like
- 8:07Speaker 1: Field of Dreams. Obviously these are completely different genres than
- 8:10Speaker 1: something like Heretic, but I'm just talking about movies in
- 8:13Speaker 1: that same sort of field of a Field of Dreams
- 8:15Speaker 1: in a Rocky. A lot of these movies have these
- 8:17Speaker 1: open ended endings where oh, well, the audience could think
- 8:21Speaker 1: one thing, but your interpretations. Just just tell me how
- 8:24Speaker 1: does the movie end? Because I don't want to read
- 8:27Speaker 1: into it. I don't need to do research. I don't
- 8:28Speaker 1: have to look up YouTube lo or videos. Just tell
- 8:30Speaker 1: me the fucking ending to the damn movie.
- 8:33Speaker 2: You're making the movie, so end it did the way
- 8:35Speaker 2: that you want it to end. And if I don't
- 8:37Speaker 2: like your ending, that's on me. But at least like
- 8:40Speaker 2: you said, you're giving me an ending. And I think
- 8:43Speaker 2: a lot of these movies nowadays do the open ended
- 8:47Speaker 2: endings because they're all making sequels and that gives them
- 8:52Speaker 2: the out to, like you want to talk about We're
- 8:54Speaker 2: going to talk about m night shamlaw movie Trap, like
- 8:58Speaker 2: the movie.
- 8:58Speaker 1: I didn't actually see it, you didn't, but I'll kind
- 9:01Speaker 1: of give a shit no.
- 9:02Speaker 2: I like the premise to the movie, right, this guy's
- 9:05Speaker 2: a serial killer. They set him up with this fake
- 9:08Speaker 2: concert because they know he's gonna go there with his daughter,
- 9:11Speaker 2: and then the whole movie's good, and then at the
- 9:13Speaker 2: end it just turns into a shit show, like when
- 9:18Speaker 2: you do see it, like all these different things. They
- 9:20Speaker 2: could have ended the movie three or four different times
- 9:22Speaker 2: and just kept it going, and then again the ending
- 9:25Speaker 2: was open ended.
- 9:26Speaker 1: I heard it was like a vanity project for his
- 9:28Speaker 1: daughter because his daughter's like the singer in Oh Yes,
- 9:31Speaker 1: Nice daughter was like the Taylor Swift in that universe
- 9:34Speaker 1: that they're going to see in concert, and she's not
- 9:37Speaker 1: a bad singer, but it's pretty forced.
- 9:39Speaker 2: Like Andy and Jackie said that, it was like we
- 9:41Speaker 2: were at we were watching a movie of a concert. Yeah,
- 9:44Speaker 2: Like that was a lot of it and it's like, well,
- 9:46Speaker 2: this isn't what we signed up for. But again, could
- 9:49Speaker 2: have ended three or four different times and just kept going,
- 9:52Speaker 2: and then when it finally did end, we were like,
- 9:53Speaker 2: why why do that?
- 9:55Speaker 1: I think that's a big issue with M. Knight Shyamalan,
- 9:57Speaker 1: just to begin with, I think he has a lot
- 9:59Speaker 1: of great ideas and then sometimes I think they're executed
- 10:03Speaker 1: perfectly in something like a sixth sense or in my opinion,
- 10:06Speaker 1: something like Signs, but a lot of the times they
- 10:10Speaker 1: fall flat, whether it's something like The Village or Lady
- 10:12Speaker 1: in the Water. I mean, I could go on and
- 10:13Speaker 1: on on M. Knight's follies. I think he's a director
- 10:17Speaker 1: that a lot of people thought was going to be
- 10:19Speaker 1: the next Spielberg. In fact, there's a Time magazine or
- 10:22Speaker 1: maybe it was Newsweek, and it says the next Spielberg.
- 10:24Speaker 1: It's a picture of him on it, and clearly that
- 10:27Speaker 1: never panned out. He made bomb after bomb, and not
- 10:31Speaker 1: just financial of flops, but just critically. He hasn't really
- 10:34Speaker 1: made a movie where it was well received in years.
- 10:38Speaker 1: I mean, every now and then something here in there
- 10:40Speaker 1: that's a minor head or minorally liked, but nothing on
- 10:43Speaker 1: the level of a Signs or a sixth CeNSE where
- 10:46Speaker 1: it's making you know, half a billion dollars or so.
- 10:48Speaker 2: Yeah, and like you said too, I think he has
- 10:51Speaker 2: a good premise for most of his films, he just
- 10:54Speaker 2: doesn't execute it properly.
- 10:55Speaker 1: Yeah, he needs he needs maybe help with with writing
- 10:58Speaker 1: every now and then, you know, maybe hire a buddy
- 11:01Speaker 1: to sit in with you and be like, is this
- 11:04Speaker 1: something that you think works. I think that's something that
- 11:08Speaker 1: he could definitely benefit from. But before we get to
- 11:10Speaker 1: know more about the Independence Day and science, which we
- 11:13Speaker 1: will get to in a bit, have you seen anything else,
- 11:16Speaker 1: because I mentioned to you guys that I saw a
- 11:17Speaker 1: Gladiator too, and I wasn't a fan of it. I
- 11:21Speaker 1: thought it was fine for what it was. Again, it
- 11:23Speaker 1: was very long, and I don't mind the long movie
- 11:25Speaker 1: if it's good. This one dragged on a bit and
- 11:28Speaker 1: too many throwbacks to the previous movie. And sure, you
- 11:33Speaker 1: have to have callbacks every now and then if this
- 11:35Speaker 1: is a continuation of the story. But when you do
- 11:38Speaker 1: similar scenes where it makes no sense for them to
- 11:43Speaker 1: be saying certain lines or to be doing certain things,
- 11:46Speaker 1: and you're only doing it because the previous movie did that.
- 11:50Speaker 1: I think that is one of my least favorite tropes
- 11:52Speaker 1: in Hollywood. They did that in the Alien movie that
- 11:55Speaker 1: came out earlier this year, where they're saying direct lines
- 11:58Speaker 1: that there would be no reason for this to say
- 12:00Speaker 1: that line. So I think Gladiator fell into that same trap.
- 12:04Speaker 1: Obviously you're not gonna get performances. I don't think that
- 12:07Speaker 1: equal Russell Crowe or Joaquin Phoenix in Gladiator. And then
- 12:11Speaker 1: it was weird seeing Denzel Washington in this Gladiator Too
- 12:14Speaker 1: movie because it took me out of the role. And
- 12:17Speaker 1: I love Denzel Washington. I mean, who does He's one
- 12:19Speaker 1: of the greatest actors of all time. But he's not
- 12:21Speaker 1: putting on a voice. He's just doing Denzel. So it's
- 12:24Speaker 1: weird seeing a movie said in you know, three hundred
- 12:27Speaker 1: AD with a guy talking like he does in Training Day.
- 12:30Speaker 2: I said the exact same thing to Jack, we saw
- 12:32Speaker 2: it on well you did see we saw it on
- 12:34Speaker 2: Wednesday and everything you just said, I said the exact
- 12:37Speaker 2: same thing. Yeah, again, love Denzel. Half the time I'm like, Okay,
- 12:42Speaker 2: he's in the role. And then, like you said, half
- 12:44Speaker 2: the time, I feel like I'm watching Training Day with
- 12:46Speaker 2: his accent or how he's saying things, his mannerisms.
- 12:49Speaker 1: They need it to hire an unknown in that role.
- 12:51Speaker 2: But he's but he's he's doing a fellow like he's
- 12:54Speaker 2: done please, so he should know how to act like that, Right,
- 12:58Speaker 2: That's what I think. But exactly like you said, I'm
- 13:01Speaker 2: I'm seeing him from training day. I thought the main guy,
- 13:05Speaker 2: I thought he did well. Pascal Pedro, Pascal hit or miss.
- 13:11Speaker 2: The the two emperors, I don't know where they came from.
- 13:15Speaker 2: I don't know who they are.
- 13:16Speaker 1: Did not like that they were weird, they were what
- 13:19Speaker 1: they don't So the.
- 13:21Speaker 2: Issues that we had with the movie, well, first of all,
- 13:26Speaker 2: we did look this up and it was true. She's
- 13:29Speaker 2: like they filled the arena with water, and I looked
- 13:32Speaker 2: it up and they actually did do that.
- 13:33Speaker 1: But I don't think they had no shark.
- 13:35Speaker 2: No, they're not bringing sharks exactly. But I don't think
- 13:42Speaker 2: that Gladiator Too did anything better than the First Gladiator at.
- 13:46Speaker 1: All, not at all.
- 13:47Speaker 2: Nothing.
- 13:47Speaker 1: In fact, it decreased in things that you thought would
- 13:50Speaker 1: advance with technology. There was from the opening scene. Yeah,
- 13:54Speaker 1: they had like a ship battle. There was maybe like
- 13:58Speaker 1: fifteen or sixteen giant ships and was trying to advance
- 14:01Speaker 1: on a base area, and I'm looking at these ships
- 14:04Speaker 1: and I'm thinking this looks off. Something about this doesn't
- 14:08Speaker 1: seem realistic. And if they made this movie forty fifty
- 14:12Speaker 1: years ago, they would have actually had real ships. Obviously,
- 14:15Speaker 1: to save money, they made it with CGI, and CGI
- 14:20Speaker 1: could be really good. I know a lot of people
- 14:22Speaker 1: love the Dune movie from earlier this year. The CGI
- 14:25Speaker 1: in that is unbelievable. It's top tier. It looks realistic.
- 14:29Speaker 1: The CGI in this movie. They had CGI monkeys and
- 14:33Speaker 1: CGI sharks that looked like something you would see on
- 14:35Speaker 1: the Sci Fi channel or a PS three video game.
- 14:38Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't understand who designed those monkeys and was like, yeah,
- 14:42Speaker 2: this is what we think they would look like. Like
- 14:44Speaker 2: you said in three hundred a d like Jackie said,
- 14:46Speaker 2: they they look like a mix between a monkey and
- 14:48Speaker 2: a dog.
- 14:49Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 14:49Speaker 2: Like the movements of them were fine, but the way
- 14:52Speaker 2: they actually looked were terrible.
- 14:54Speaker 1: See, I disagree with even that because the movements. There
- 14:57Speaker 1: was a scene where we're getting to some spoiler or
- 15:00Speaker 1: so whatever it is, what it is. There's a scene
- 15:02Speaker 1: in the nineteen ninety film Mortal Kombat where Luke Can
- 15:05Speaker 1: goes to grab reptile, and he's like this CGI freakish
- 15:10Speaker 1: character because CGI is in this infancy and he's holding
- 15:12Speaker 1: him up and he's not really holding anything because it's CGI.
- 15:16Speaker 1: And they did that exact same movement of the you know,
- 15:20Speaker 1: the Gladiator's son. I forget the actor's name, but he's
- 15:22Speaker 1: holding up this monkey and he's doing that same hurky
- 15:24Speaker 1: jerky moment where movement where he's not really holding on
- 15:28Speaker 1: to anything, and it felt really weird. It felt like
- 15:31Speaker 1: I was watching something from thirty years ago. And this
- 15:34Speaker 1: movie has an extreme budget. This is a three hundred
- 15:37Speaker 1: million dollar picture. It's making money, but it has to
- 15:40Speaker 1: make I read it has to make over seven hundred
- 15:42Speaker 1: million dollars to make profit, because if the budgets three
- 15:45Speaker 1: hundred million dollars, you still have to pay the theaters
- 15:47Speaker 1: for actually having the theaters for actually having the movie
- 15:50Speaker 1: rather and then to advertise for commercials and posters and
- 15:54Speaker 1: you know, advertisements on YouTube and Instagram. All that costs money.
- 15:57Speaker 1: So I don't know if it's gonna make profit. It's
- 16:01Speaker 1: making money, but it's not gonna make profit. But I
- 16:02Speaker 1: did not like the CGI. It was a little too long.
- 16:05Speaker 1: The action sequences were fine, and it did have I guess,
- 16:09Speaker 1: a satisfying ending in the sense that it had a
- 16:11Speaker 1: happy ending, which I was complaining about with a lot
- 16:13Speaker 1: of other movies. But it's just an unnecessary movie. Why
- 16:17Speaker 1: are we making this?
- 16:18Speaker 2: I agree? And like I said, it didn't do anything
- 16:20Speaker 2: better than the first one. I think the fight scenes
- 16:22Speaker 2: in the first one we were longer and better, Like
- 16:25Speaker 2: there were a lot of ones here in this movie
- 16:27Speaker 2: that were kind of short and quick and done. One
- 16:31Speaker 2: thing Jackie said is like, well, why did everybody just
- 16:33Speaker 2: follow him right away? Like they didn't know he was
- 16:37Speaker 2: Maximus's son right away? They followed Maximus in the first
- 16:40Speaker 2: one because of who he was the general one, I guess.
- 16:42Speaker 1: Because he was a good fighter, because he fought monkeys
- 16:44Speaker 1: in one scene.
- 16:45Speaker 2: I guess. But like I said, you know, I think
- 16:49Speaker 2: you gave it a I think you said a six
- 16:50Speaker 2: point two. I think I said, like a six point five.
- 16:52Speaker 1: Yeah, again, which is weird plot holes and coincidences. It's like, Okay,
- 16:57Speaker 1: this guy get captured and he's the only one that
- 17:00Speaker 1: that's captured, and he just so happens to be, you know,
- 17:02Speaker 1: the son of this guy and set up in this
- 17:04Speaker 1: one camp in prison where you know his old armor is.
- 17:08Speaker 1: It's like, come on, this is comic book stuff where
- 17:10Speaker 1: oh here's his armor. It's like, oh, this is Batman's
- 17:13Speaker 1: old armor. Here's you know, Russell Crow's old armor. So
- 17:17Speaker 1: and here weird movie.
- 17:18Speaker 2: Here's the thing when Maximus died in the first one
- 17:21Speaker 2: and commonists, right, Lucius would have been the emperor. Yeah,
- 17:26Speaker 2: why did she send him away?
- 17:31Speaker 1: And I couldn't tell you?
- 17:32Speaker 2: And where did he go that? She just lost him?
- 17:36Speaker 2: Like just go away and that's it, you know, like
- 17:39Speaker 2: again talk about plot holes.
- 17:40Speaker 1: It not look for him at all.
- 17:41Speaker 2: Yeah, like you didn't, like I understand because he was
- 17:44Speaker 2: a child, but if he's supposed to be the emperor,
- 17:46Speaker 2: then he should have been the emperor. Yeah, Like but no,
- 17:48Speaker 2: you just send them away because people are gonna try
- 17:50Speaker 2: and kill him. I guess.
- 17:51Speaker 1: But who who's going to kill him?
- 17:53Speaker 2: I don't know. And then and then Denzel just again spoilers,
- 17:56Speaker 2: but just works his way right up and then comes well,
- 18:01Speaker 2: first of all, he made the monkey the first whatever,
- 18:03Speaker 2: which was hilarious, and then Denzel and then Denzel is like, okay,
- 18:07Speaker 2: now a member, Like that's it.
- 18:10Speaker 1: Yes, you think there'd be more voting and democracy that
- 18:14Speaker 1: would need to be happening. Who knows. I think this
- 18:18Speaker 1: is one of those movies. In ten fifteen years, you're
- 18:20Speaker 1: gonna go they made a Gladiator too, Like, you're not
- 18:23Speaker 1: even gonna remember that they made this movie. That's how
- 18:26Speaker 1: I feel with the Blade Runner movie. They made a
- 18:28Speaker 1: Blade Runner sequel like five or six years ago, maybe
- 18:31Speaker 1: it was ten years ago. At this point, I don't
- 18:32Speaker 1: even remember being a thing. And that's Ridley Scott. Another
- 18:35Speaker 1: Ridley Scott movie that they're bringing back, although I don't
- 18:37Speaker 1: think he directed the most recent Blade Runner. But it's
- 18:41Speaker 1: hard to bring back characters, even though no characters really
- 18:46Speaker 1: being brought back, but franchises twenty thirty years, especially comedies.
- 18:51Speaker 1: Comedies you cannot bring back. We've seen that Dumb and
- 18:55Speaker 1: Dumber is horrendous, but action movies as well. Your Die
- 19:00Speaker 1: Archer Indiana Jones is some things are just better left
- 19:03Speaker 1: off in the past, and to have that legacy tarnish
- 19:06Speaker 1: is unfortunate because now people when they do think of Gladiator,
- 19:09Speaker 1: some of them will be like, well, there's Gladiator too,
- 19:12Speaker 1: and it just sort of ruins what the legacy of
- 19:15Speaker 1: that original Gladiator is. Have you guys seen anything else.
- 19:18Speaker 1: You didn't see The Wicked. You didn't want to see
- 19:20Speaker 1: the Wicked.
- 19:20Speaker 2: No, I saw a wicket on Broadway and you Yeah.
- 19:24Speaker 2: So growing up, one of my favorite movies of all
- 19:27Speaker 2: time is The Wizard of Oz. You are one pathetic loser,
- 19:34Speaker 2: and Wicked came out and everybody was so about it,
- 19:39Speaker 2: and I was younger at that point, so I waited
- 19:42Speaker 2: for a little while until ticket prices went down. So
- 19:45Speaker 2: I think all the hype for like four or five
- 19:47Speaker 2: years just made it. It couldn't it couldn't rise to
- 19:54Speaker 2: the level that everybody made it. So when I saw it,
- 19:56Speaker 2: I didn't like it. Jaggie doesn't want to see it
- 19:59Speaker 2: because it's two hours and forty minutes and it's only
- 20:01Speaker 2: the first part, the only first act, So no, not
- 20:05Speaker 2: going to see that. What do we see? We saw
- 20:07Speaker 2: a Real Pain, which was the Kieran Culkin and Jesse
- 20:12Speaker 2: Eisenberg movie. It was okay, it was nothing special.
- 20:18Speaker 1: It's not being advertised at all. I don't think I've
- 20:20Speaker 1: seen a single commercial. Maybe you've seen a YouTube ad
- 20:23Speaker 1: here and there, but like if I'm watching football, I'm
- 20:25Speaker 1: seeing no edguab no, no.
- 20:27Speaker 2: Yeah, I think I saw it because he was on
- 20:29Speaker 2: Kelly Clarkson. I think I saw it on Instagram or
- 20:31Speaker 2: something like that that he was talking about it because
- 20:34Speaker 2: he directed it and wrote it. I thought Kieran colchinb
- 20:37Speaker 2: was great in the movie. Actually, what else did we seriously?
- 20:41Speaker 1: He was in Signs.
- 20:43Speaker 2: Yeah, he's the kid. Yeah, no one of the cults,
- 20:46Speaker 2: the other one or third Brother, Yeah, but no. I
- 20:51Speaker 2: thought he did a he did a great job in that.
- 20:53Speaker 2: But again, I think that movie was only an hour
- 20:56Speaker 2: and a half and it felt like it was about
- 20:58Speaker 2: two and a half.
- 20:58Speaker 1: Oh yeah, that's never good.
- 21:00Speaker 2: And like you said, I don't mind, I'll watch a
- 21:01Speaker 2: three hour movie. I just don't want to feel like
- 21:03Speaker 2: it's three hours.
- 21:04Speaker 1: A big issue is with me as I get older
- 21:07Speaker 1: and these drinks get larger at these theaters, and now
- 21:10Speaker 1: they're serving alcohol at these theaters. They need to have
- 21:14Speaker 1: like a five minute intermission if your movie is two
- 21:17Speaker 1: hours and forty minutes. I understand why they don't do
- 21:20Speaker 1: it because you know, if you take a break, then
- 21:23Speaker 1: you can't have as many showtimes. And if extend the
- 21:26Speaker 1: time for this, then you can't make as much money.
- 21:28Speaker 1: But it would benefit I think a lot of people
- 21:30Speaker 1: if they knew that there would be a time for
- 21:32Speaker 1: them to go re up snacks, because every now and then,
- 21:35Speaker 1: if I do get a snack at the movie theater,
- 21:37Speaker 1: it's done before the previous we're even done. And then
- 21:40Speaker 1: the bedroom. If I'm getting a large or even a small,
- 21:43Speaker 1: the small sodas at the theaters are gigantic. If I
- 21:45Speaker 1: get some beers at the movie theater, it's done, Mike
- 21:48Speaker 1: bladder does not exist at all. So I think, you know,
- 21:51Speaker 1: a nice little pause button or like some intermission I
- 21:56Speaker 1: think would be something that I think if they pulled moviegoers,
- 22:00Speaker 1: but they would want to be done to actually increase
- 22:02Speaker 1: people to go to the theaters. Because theaters, unless it's
- 22:05Speaker 1: a big movie like a Wicket or a Marvel movie,
- 22:08Speaker 1: theaters are not doing too hot, no, So I think
- 22:11Speaker 1: maybe let's start like asking people what they actually want
- 22:15Speaker 1: with their theaters. Now, I rented or rented, I gave
- 22:17Speaker 1: you guys this movie. I'm holding right here, Briggs be Bear.
- 22:21Speaker 1: I said, this is one of my favorite movies of
- 22:23Speaker 1: all time. I lent it to you and your girlfriend Jackie,
- 22:26Speaker 1: and you both didn't like it. Why what are you
- 22:29Speaker 1: watching the same.
- 22:30Speaker 3: Movie as me?
- 22:31Speaker 2: We were we were. I don't know. It was very strange.
- 22:36Speaker 2: Uh strange is great again, it could be. I don't
- 22:41Speaker 2: even know how to describe it, honestly. I mean it
- 22:45Speaker 2: was sad, you know, with what happened to him, and
- 22:48Speaker 2: then he's a twenty five year old guy and doesn't
- 22:51Speaker 2: know anything.
- 22:52Speaker 1: Yeah. So basically the premise from what I remember is
- 22:55Speaker 1: he was sort of kidnapped as a kid and his
- 22:57Speaker 1: dad was creating this fake TV show called Briggsby Bear
- 23:02Speaker 1: and he held him like captive in this weird desert
- 23:05Speaker 1: basement sort of layer. And then eventually, like within ten
- 23:09Speaker 1: minutes of the movie, he's sort of broken free from
- 23:11Speaker 1: this prison layer and he gets to reunite with his
- 23:14Speaker 1: real parents and he sort of forms this relationship with
- 23:17Speaker 1: his sister. But then they want to make a movie.
- 23:21Speaker 1: They want to make the briggs be Bear, which is
- 23:23Speaker 1: this character that his dad made up into a feature
- 23:25Speaker 1: length film. So's he won a very bizarre movie. For sure.
- 23:30Speaker 1: I understand why people wouldn't like it, but I love
- 23:33Speaker 1: that weirdness factor. I love Kyle Mooney, the guy who
- 23:37Speaker 1: wrote and a start in the movie. I think he's
- 23:40Speaker 1: plays that sincere sort of likable Goofball who is a
- 23:44Speaker 1: fish out of water. I think he played that really well.
- 23:47Speaker 1: So I love the practical effects. You know, they're making
- 23:49Speaker 1: like an old fashioned eighties science fiction Teddy Ruckspin which
- 23:53Speaker 1: was like an eighties bear thing, which I'm sure you knew.
- 23:56Speaker 1: Jonathan mixed with I guess Barney the Dinosaur in to
- 24:00Speaker 1: a feature length film. So it hit a lot of
- 24:02Speaker 1: notes and beats of stuff that I enjoy. So I
- 24:05Speaker 1: like the movie. You guys didn't again even anything. Jackie
- 24:08Speaker 1: hated it apparently.
- 24:09Speaker 2: Again, I you know, it was strange, it was weird.
- 24:13Speaker 2: There were certain parts that I liked that I laughed at. Again,
- 24:16Speaker 2: his story is sad.
- 24:19Speaker 1: You know.
- 24:21Speaker 2: Would I watch it again?
- 24:22Speaker 3: No?
- 24:23Speaker 2: But whatever, Like we had discussed that it reminded you.
- 24:27Speaker 2: We had brought up Blast in the Past with Brendan Fraser,
- 24:29Speaker 2: and uh, I like you said the name right. Yeah,
- 24:32Speaker 2: well I watched your your documentary so because I had
- 24:35Speaker 2: been saying it wrong.
- 24:36Speaker 1: Yeah, Frazier, Yah, it's Fraser.
- 24:39Speaker 2: But again that one, that one had a little more
- 24:43Speaker 2: comedy to it.
- 24:44Speaker 1: That was a less insane movie. This is yeah, breaksby
- 24:47Speaker 1: Bears is a trippy type of film. Yeah, yeah, the
- 24:50Speaker 1: past is more Hollywood, and I like the Blast from
- 24:53Speaker 1: the Past. I like both of the movies. But well,
- 24:55Speaker 1: there goes your Christmas gift. I guess I have to
- 24:57Speaker 1: buy a new Christmas gift for you. Guys. I got
- 24:59Speaker 1: to the whole I got you the special edition.
- 25:01Speaker 2: Actually for Christmas, did you get us the whole Brigsby
- 25:04Speaker 2: Bear collection?
- 25:05Speaker 1: Yes? Unfortunately, I'll have to return that with this shirt
- 25:08Speaker 1: as well.
- 25:08Speaker 2: But I was also surprised that how many people were
- 25:11Speaker 2: in that movie. Yeah, Mark Hamill, look at us. Claire Danes,
- 25:17Speaker 2: it's a psychologist, yeah, Claire Day Yeah, and this Andy
- 25:20Speaker 2: Samberg was in it.
- 25:21Speaker 1: Mm hmm. Well he's got the SNL connection, so I'm
- 25:24Speaker 1: sure he has for some favors here and there, even
- 25:28Speaker 1: like the kid actors, the the guy, the girl who
- 25:30Speaker 1: played his sister. I thought it was really good.
- 25:32Speaker 2: The guy Spence that helped him with the Hispanic guy.
- 25:35Speaker 1: Yeah, he was good and he liked the movie.
- 25:37Speaker 2: And I think this came up because we were talking
- 25:40Speaker 2: about Y two K.
- 25:41Speaker 1: Right, Yeah, that's the new movie from Kyle Mooney, the
- 25:44Speaker 1: same guy who wrote and directed Briggsby Bear. As a
- 25:46Speaker 1: new movie Why two K coming out, which is by
- 25:49Speaker 1: the time this gets released, probably will be out that week.
- 25:51Speaker 1: I think it comes out next week, so probably the
- 25:53Speaker 1: day this gets released, it should be out. So I'm
- 25:56Speaker 1: excited for that. I know you guys thought it looked terrible.
- 25:58Speaker 1: Now you're definitely not gonna see because I was like, listen,
- 26:01Speaker 1: give breaks me bear a chance. Then you want to
- 26:02Speaker 1: see Y QWK. You hated this, there's no chance you're
- 26:04Speaker 1: going to see Y two K.
- 26:06Speaker 2: I don't know. Like you said, we do get we
- 26:08Speaker 2: are on the same level on certain movies and then
- 26:12Speaker 2: other things we just have different taste on. You know,
- 26:14Speaker 2: that's why people make movies, because there's plenty of people
- 26:17Speaker 2: who like, you know, certain things, and other people that
- 26:20Speaker 2: don't like them.
- 26:21Speaker 1: So but at least I can respect your opinions. There
- 26:24Speaker 1: are some people that you just hear them talk and
- 26:27Speaker 1: what they're saying is is not even though I don't
- 26:30Speaker 1: agree with it, it's also just dumb. Yeah, at least
- 26:32Speaker 1: I can respect. Like, you don't like this, I hate
- 26:35Speaker 1: you for it, but I respect your opinion on the matter.
- 26:38Speaker 2: Again, I just not my type of movie, that's all. Like.
- 26:41Speaker 2: I watched it again. There were certain parts that I like,
- 26:45Speaker 2: just overall, I was like Okay, yeah, you know it
- 26:48Speaker 2: is what it is.
- 26:49Speaker 1: I'm gonna go on the record and say that movie
- 26:51Speaker 1: brings me. Bear and Creed are my two favorite movies
- 26:55Speaker 1: of the last fifteen years. Okay, did you like Creed? Yes,
- 26:58Speaker 1: I create a lot, Yes, I love The Rocky Series
- 27:01Speaker 1: is actually my favorite film series of all time. I
- 27:03Speaker 1: think they're all great, even shitty Rocky five. I will
- 27:08Speaker 1: watch if Rocky five's on TV. I'm not not watching it.
- 27:11Speaker 1: I gotta watch that street fight at the end. But
- 27:13Speaker 1: the guy says, touch me and I'll sue you then
- 27:16Speaker 1: punches him. He's assuming for what. I gotta watch all
- 27:20Speaker 1: of these movies whenever they're on And we're recording this
- 27:22Speaker 1: Thanksgiving weekend, and I always think of the Rocky Series
- 27:25Speaker 1: and Thanksgiving. They sort of go hand in hand. A
- 27:27Speaker 1: lot of the movies came out around that time. A
- 27:28Speaker 1: lot of them are set in the fall season. But
- 27:31Speaker 1: the reason why we're here, Jonathan, we're gonna get to
- 27:33Speaker 1: the main event, Independence Day and Signs. These are two
- 27:37Speaker 1: movies we were talking about. I don't even know where
- 27:40Speaker 1: it came up from. We just brought it up randomly
- 27:42Speaker 1: at the bowling alley. I'm sure We had some beers
- 27:44Speaker 1: in US and we were just discussing these two movies,
- 27:47Speaker 1: and you were on the side of Independence Day being
- 27:50Speaker 1: the superior movie, and I was on the side of
- 27:53Speaker 1: Signs being the superior movie. Now, let's just break down
- 27:56Speaker 1: a little bit of the facts. Independence Day grossed almost well.
- 28:01Speaker 1: It grossed eight hundred million dollars over that eight hundred
- 28:04Speaker 1: and seventeen million dollars worldwide on a seventy five million
- 28:08Speaker 1: dollar budget, which just do the math. Let's just say
- 28:11Speaker 1: hypothetically it cost with advertisements and all that stuff, two
- 28:16Speaker 1: hundred million dollars, which it probably didn't probably a hundred
- 28:18Speaker 1: fifty million dollars. It grossed. It made a ton of profit.
- 28:21Speaker 1: It mad It made twentieth Century Fox a boatload of money,
- 28:25Speaker 1: which is shocking that they didn't do more things with
- 28:29Speaker 1: the property. Now, they had an action figure line, which
- 28:32Speaker 1: was not really advertised too well. I would have thought
- 28:34Speaker 1: they would have tried to do a cartoon show. I
- 28:37Speaker 1: would have thought they would have tried to do more
- 28:38Speaker 1: video games. They did a shitty PS One game, but
- 28:41Speaker 1: I mean an alien invasion movie that's just asking for
- 28:46Speaker 1: more content. It needed, I think to be because you
- 28:50Speaker 1: think it could be like the next Star Wars, which
- 28:51Speaker 1: had that giant juggernaut of multimedia surrounding it. Independence they
- 28:56Speaker 1: sort of just was, and then twenty years later, when
- 28:59Speaker 1: no one asked, they made a shitty sequel which better
- 29:02Speaker 1: not have liked.
- 29:03Speaker 2: I don't even think I saw it.
- 29:04Speaker 1: Oh that's bad. That's a bad one, you know what
- 29:06Speaker 1: it is.
- 29:06Speaker 2: I think that, like we've been talking about, I don't
- 29:10Speaker 2: want to see a sequel to a movie that I
- 29:12Speaker 2: love twenty years later. Now, yes, I did go see
- 29:14Speaker 2: Gladiator two, but I kind of wish I didn't. Like
- 29:18Speaker 2: you said, just leave it yep.
- 29:20Speaker 4: At the original at least with Gladiator too, at least
- 29:24Speaker 4: you have Ridley Scott, who, although he's aged and he's
- 29:28Speaker 4: not what he once was, he's still a competent director.
- 29:30Speaker 1: Roland Emrick, who directed Independence Day. I don't like him. No,
- 29:35Speaker 1: I like The Patriot. I think that's a really fun movie.
- 29:38Speaker 1: Godzilla from nineteen ninety eight probably one of the most
- 29:41Speaker 1: disappointing times I've ever had in the movie theater. He
- 29:44Speaker 1: did a bunch of shitty like destruction movies like The
- 29:48Speaker 1: Day After Tomorrow and ten thousand BC. He did one
- 29:52Speaker 1: where oh what the hell was this they had to shoot.
- 29:55Speaker 1: It was like sort of like Armageddon, where there was
- 29:57Speaker 1: a meteor was crashing down to Earth. Just terrible disaster movies.
- 30:02Speaker 1: But it made a lot of money, as did Signs,
- 30:04Speaker 1: which had a relatively same budget, even though it came
- 30:07Speaker 1: out a few years later. Seventy two million dollar budget
- 30:09Speaker 1: didn't make nearly as much, but it made a lot
- 30:11Speaker 1: of money. Four hundred million dollars plus worldwide for Signs.
- 30:15Speaker 1: Two different types of movies, but similar in the sense
- 30:19Speaker 1: that they're both alien movies. So here's the reason why
- 30:23Speaker 1: I think I like and I want to say this,
- 30:25Speaker 1: I like Independence Day. I'm not gonna go on the
- 30:28Speaker 1: record and say I don't like this movie. I've seen
- 30:30Speaker 1: Independence Day far many more times than i've seen Signs.
- 30:34Speaker 1: Every fourth of July, I'm pretty much watching Independence Day. Signs, though,
- 30:38Speaker 1: is a slower build of a movie, and I think
- 30:42Speaker 1: the older I get, I like movies like this where
- 30:45Speaker 1: it's less as more. You don't see the alien. You
- 30:49Speaker 1: see you know, you hear stuff, You hear stuff on
- 30:52Speaker 1: the roof, and then you see, you know, his cornfield's
- 30:55Speaker 1: all messed up, and then you see a shadow of
- 30:58Speaker 1: an image and then you know, lights are in the
- 31:01Speaker 1: sky on the news and you're not seeing anything. It's
- 31:04Speaker 1: not really until you see a birthday party scene where
- 31:08Speaker 1: they're filming a Mexican birthday party and Joaquin Phoenix is
- 31:11Speaker 1: in the TV, you know, watching the TV, and he
- 31:13Speaker 1: flips out because you see this quick image of this alien,
- 31:17Speaker 1: a grainy footage from far away, sort of like a
- 31:19Speaker 1: big foot footage of this alien, and that shocked the
- 31:22Speaker 1: hell out of audiences. I remember vividly the audiences in
- 31:26Speaker 1: the theaters. I saw this one twice in theaters going
- 31:28Speaker 1: nuts with that scene.
- 31:29Speaker 5: The startling footage we're about to show you was photographed
- 31:32Speaker 5: by a forty two year old Romero Valadaries. This video
- 31:35Speaker 5: was taken yesterday afternoon at his son's seventh birthday in
- 31:38Speaker 5: the city of Pasofundo, Brazil.
- 31:45Speaker 2: Wolve children Promenos.
- 31:51Speaker 1: And it's less is more. It's not like Independence Day,
- 32:02Speaker 1: where there's within the first thirty minutes there's one hundred explosions.
- 32:05Speaker 1: The White House gets exploded. You don't really see the
- 32:07Speaker 1: aliens per se, but you see all the ships and
- 32:09Speaker 1: the CGI and all that stuff. So they're two different
- 32:12Speaker 1: types of movies. And I think like I said, the
- 32:14Speaker 1: older I get a movie like Signs is more my Alley.
- 32:18Speaker 2: Okay, now let me ask you. This was Signs. M
- 32:21Speaker 2: nightshall on second movie.
- 32:23Speaker 1: He did Unbreakable also in between then and he did
- 32:27Speaker 1: like a short like like an independent type movie, but
- 32:29Speaker 1: it was his third like big movie was.
- 32:32Speaker 2: It was.
- 32:33Speaker 1: Sixth Sense, then Unbreakable, then Signs.
- 32:36Speaker 2: I would say that that's going to be partially the
- 32:39Speaker 2: reason why I made so much money. I think at
- 32:41Speaker 2: that point he was still.
- 32:43Speaker 1: Here's still a lot hot direct. Well that's when the
- 32:46Speaker 1: article came out. I was talking about the Newsweek. It
- 32:48Speaker 1: said the next Spielberg. Obviously also having a guy like
- 32:51Speaker 1: Mel Gibson pre anti Semitism, leaking and you know, beating
- 32:54Speaker 1: girlfriend getting out there. He was bankable. He was box
- 32:59Speaker 1: office you know, Oscar winning for a Brave Heart, The
- 33:02Speaker 1: Patriot with actually another connection there because he was in
- 33:05Speaker 1: The Patriot that was directed by Roland Emmerick. But you know,
- 33:09Speaker 1: Gibson was on fire, Joaquin Phoenix up and coming act there.
- 33:13Speaker 1: It had a lot going forward. Also, there hasn't really
- 33:15Speaker 1: been a UFO movie probably since Independence Day really since then.
- 33:21Speaker 1: You know, it was a five year, six year gap
- 33:23Speaker 1: in between alien movies. It wasn't a saturated market, so
- 33:27Speaker 1: and I think it was a well received movie. Critics
- 33:29Speaker 1: liked it, audiences loved Signs. I think though, you know,
- 33:33Speaker 1: if you made this movie after some of his bombs,
- 33:36Speaker 1: obviously it wouldn't have made four hundred million dollars.
- 33:39Speaker 2: Yeah, that's that's what I was saying. As far as
- 33:40Speaker 2: that goes, you're one hundred percent right that it's definitely
- 33:45Speaker 2: they're not the same type of movie. Yes, they both
- 33:47Speaker 2: have to do with aliens, but Independence Day is an
- 33:50Speaker 2: action film, definitely more comedy in there. There's really no
- 33:54Speaker 2: comedy and Signs Signs, like you said, is just a
- 33:57Speaker 2: slow build. I don't know. My thing with Signs is,
- 34:02Speaker 2: first of all, I don't see mel Gibson as a
- 34:04Speaker 2: as a priest, right, which he was. Then he lost
- 34:09Speaker 2: his faith because of his wife getting hit by the car.
- 34:13Speaker 2: Now what is that? What is her getting hit by
- 34:16Speaker 2: the car? Now she's basically giving him the recipe to
- 34:20Speaker 2: defeat the aliens? Like, how does that She got hit
- 34:24Speaker 2: by the car and saw what was gonna happen.
- 34:25Speaker 1: Listen, I'm not a religious man, Jonathan, but there are
- 34:28Speaker 1: miracles in this world, right and I'm sure there are
- 34:32Speaker 1: lots of plot holes in Signs. I'm not gonna say
- 34:35Speaker 1: that it makes sense that an alien species that can
- 34:37Speaker 1: travel hundreds of millions of light years would want to
- 34:40Speaker 1: travel to a planet filled with eighty percent water When
- 34:44Speaker 1: they're one achilles heel is water. What happens if it rains?
- 34:48Speaker 2: Yeah, they got to stay inside.
- 34:49Speaker 1: They have to stay they have to bring umbrellas with them.
- 34:51Speaker 1: So does that make sense? Of course not nope. But
- 34:55Speaker 1: you know, let's think of the stupidness of Independence Day,
- 34:58Speaker 1: some of the goofy comic book, you know, characters that
- 35:01Speaker 1: we have the typical over the top Jewish father, Oh,
- 35:06Speaker 1: my David, you don't be dead without my David. That character?
- 35:09Speaker 1: What about the over the top gay guy, Oh, I
- 35:11Speaker 1: gotta call my mother, Like these are these are not
- 35:15Speaker 1: human beings. There's nobody that's like these. So maybe maybe
- 35:20Speaker 1: there are, but they are there. It's just it's so
- 35:23Speaker 1: over the top where Signs is so grounded it is.
- 35:27Speaker 1: You know, I thought Gibson was fantastic. I thought I
- 35:29Speaker 1: thought he could play a priest for sure, And I
- 35:33Speaker 1: think his performances is a grounded performance where if you're
- 35:37Speaker 1: getting attacked by aliens. Are you gonna have the ability
- 35:39Speaker 1: to be like, oh, you better not shoot that green
- 35:41Speaker 1: shit at me. It's like, what did he have a
- 35:43Speaker 1: writer with him in the back of the spaceship, like
- 35:46Speaker 1: say this one liner? When you know they shoot green
- 35:48Speaker 1: shit at you, you're just gonna be like, ah, fuck Eleen,
- 35:52Speaker 1: Like you're not gonna be thinking like that. Again, different
- 35:55Speaker 1: types of movies. That is a summer popcorn box office
- 35:59Speaker 1: in line with the Marvel movies of recent years where
- 36:02Speaker 1: they're doing some of those corny things. But again, I'm
- 36:06Speaker 1: not gonna I hate the disparage Independence because I love
- 36:09Speaker 1: the movie.
- 36:10Speaker 2: I love it well and like you just said, you
- 36:12Speaker 2: watch it pretty much every year, every fourth here's my thing.
- 36:16Speaker 2: If I'm flipping channels and Independence Days on, I'm gonna
- 36:21Speaker 2: watch it. Yeah, if Signs is on, I'm gonna go
- 36:23Speaker 2: buy it. That's how I know that I like Independence
- 36:26Speaker 2: Day better. And again it's because again it's an action movie.
- 36:30Speaker 2: Like you said, it's over the top. It's something that
- 36:32Speaker 2: you can watch over and over again because it's entertaining. Yes,
- 36:34Speaker 2: like Signs, you gotta be like you gotta be in
- 36:36Speaker 2: the right movie invested it? Yeah, exactly.
- 36:38Speaker 1: You want to watch scigence at You don't want to
- 36:39Speaker 1: watch Signs in a bright sunny day. You want to
- 36:42Speaker 1: watch it, you know, nighttime, creepy, yep, in the right atmosphere.
- 36:46Speaker 1: But I don't agree with the statement because I've only
- 36:48Speaker 1: seen Field of Dreams maybe five or six times, and
- 36:51Speaker 1: it is in my top ten favorite movies of all time, Okay,
- 36:54Speaker 1: and it's just a movie that it's It's not that
- 36:58Speaker 1: it's a hard watch, but it's just a different type
- 37:01Speaker 1: of movie. Like I could throw on Dumb and Dumber anytime.
- 37:03Speaker 1: I could watch Dumb and Dumber five times in one year.
- 37:06Speaker 1: I can't watch Shindler's List more than you know. I've
- 37:08Speaker 1: only watched that two or three times in my lifetime.
- 37:10Speaker 1: They're just different types of movies. Where Independence Day you
- 37:13Speaker 1: can have a few beers, relax, goof off with your friends.
- 37:17Speaker 1: I don't know how once you could do that with
- 37:20Speaker 1: something like Signs, although it is it is like an
- 37:23Speaker 1: introduction horror movie because it's got horror elements to it,
- 37:28Speaker 1: it's got you know, great practical special effects. This is
- 37:32Speaker 1: both of these movies. I do want to bring up
- 37:34Speaker 1: their time capsules in the sense that Independence Day is
- 37:39Speaker 1: pretty much the last big budget movie to really use
- 37:44Speaker 1: practical effects in the sense that they use a lot
- 37:46Speaker 1: of miniatures. If this was created, if that was created
- 37:49Speaker 1: three or four years later, none of those things would
- 37:52Speaker 1: look good today because it would all be CGI. Like
- 37:54Speaker 1: that White House getting blown up that was a miniature
- 37:57Speaker 1: of the White House. If that was created in two
- 37:59Speaker 1: thousand and three, two thousand and four, all that stuff
- 38:02Speaker 1: would be CGI and it would age poorly, because CGI
- 38:04Speaker 1: ages really badly. So it's cool that both of these movies,
- 38:07Speaker 1: you know, the the Alien and Signs that's an all
- 38:10Speaker 1: you know, a practical effect. That's a guy in a suit.
- 38:12Speaker 1: I think if that was made five or six years later,
- 38:14Speaker 1: that would all be CGI and it would not age well.
- 38:17Speaker 1: So I like the idea that both of these movies
- 38:19Speaker 1: are doing things that I enjoy with my movie making, experience,
- 38:21Speaker 1: practical effects, miniatures, all that stuff. And they're two different
- 38:26Speaker 1: types of movies. If I'm grading them, I would say
- 38:28Speaker 1: Signs is a better movie. It's a better movie. I
- 38:32Speaker 1: think it's a better active movie. It's definitely a better
- 38:34Speaker 1: shot movie. It's got a good film score to it.
- 38:38Speaker 1: Although I do like the music and independence say I
- 38:40Speaker 1: think that is a good iconic score. When the president's
- 38:43Speaker 1: giving this speech and the music's hitting in the background,
- 38:46Speaker 1: that's good stuff. We're going to live on.
- 38:49Speaker 2: We're going to survive. Today, we celebrate our Independence Day.
- 39:03Speaker 1: But I think as far as like filmmaking goes to
- 39:05Speaker 1: be like a snooty film critics sort of guy, I
- 39:08Speaker 1: think Signs blows Independence Day out of the water.
- 39:11Speaker 2: Okay, never made a movie. I don't really know how
- 39:15Speaker 2: they make movies. Again, I think Independence Day is a
- 39:21Speaker 2: better movie all around.
- 39:23Speaker 1: All around, all around. That's ridiculous, all around.
- 39:25Speaker 2: Like you said, the acting.
- 39:27Speaker 1: Mel Gibson, acting circles around Jeff Goldblum and Will Smith
- 39:30Speaker 1: and I love well and Jeff Goldblum.
- 39:32Speaker 2: But again, because it's a more serious movie.
- 39:35Speaker 1: Yeah, but you said all around. Well, the acting is
- 39:37Speaker 1: better in Signs. You know, it's better in science. The
- 39:40Speaker 1: connection between the kids, the kids.
- 39:42Speaker 2: The kids were good. The kids were good.
- 39:43Speaker 1: I did like the kid Signs and then the kids
- 39:45Speaker 1: and then dependence. They're they're like full house actors. My
- 39:48Speaker 1: daddy did this, my dad, oh my mommy died. We'll
- 39:52Speaker 1: get over it.
- 39:53Speaker 2: I do like uh, I do like Randy Quaid's character.
- 39:56Speaker 1: He's amazing.
- 39:57Speaker 2: He's great.
- 39:59Speaker 1: Oh it's amazing.
- 40:03Speaker 2: Yeah. Again different, it's hard because again, like you said,
- 40:07Speaker 2: they're completely different types of movies. You know, I just
- 40:12Speaker 2: don't know. Signs for me just didn't do it like
- 40:15Speaker 2: you said. But you even you even brought up the
- 40:18Speaker 2: plot holes in there. You know, I didn't even have
- 40:20Speaker 2: to make those points for you. Like and again, we
- 40:23Speaker 2: know in Independence Day they're coming to take over the world.
- 40:26Speaker 2: They're coming to take over Earth. Yeah, what are they doing?
- 40:29Speaker 2: And uh, I mean they're like I'm.
- 40:32Speaker 1: Assuming they're there to take over Earth as well.
- 40:34Speaker 2: You would think, but they're only like going to like
- 40:38Speaker 2: people's like houses, like individually too. I think what they
- 40:42Speaker 2: wanted to take them back to maybe probum or or
- 40:46Speaker 2: do whatever with them. Like in Independence Day they were
- 40:49Speaker 2: trying to blow up Earth like they were trying to
- 40:51Speaker 2: kill everybody, right, and Signs they're at his house, they're
- 40:54Speaker 2: wherever else they were.
- 40:56Speaker 1: But again, we don't know what else is going on
- 40:58Speaker 1: in the world. See that That's the beauty. That's why
- 41:00Speaker 1: I like science because it's just it's basically it takes
- 41:03Speaker 1: place all in that one farmhouse. He goes to m
- 41:06Speaker 1: Night Shyamalan's house, because of course he has to shoehorn
- 41:09Speaker 1: himself in every single movie he directs. But it's the
- 41:12Speaker 1: story of how one family would react to an alien invasion.
- 41:16Speaker 1: I find that to be a fascinating story instead of this.
- 41:19Speaker 1: There's so many characters, And in the Pennance Day, you
- 41:22Speaker 1: have Randy Quaid and his kids. You have the President,
- 41:24Speaker 1: you have the President's daughter, you have Jeff Goldblum, you
- 41:27Speaker 1: have Jeff Goldblum's dad, you have the gay guy, you
- 41:29Speaker 1: have the whole military aspect, you have you know, yeah,
- 41:33Speaker 1: Will Smith, you have Will Smith's friend. There's there's like
- 41:36Speaker 1: seventeen eighteen different characters, and they all are memorable, but
- 41:39Speaker 1: there's a lot out there that you cenerally develop any
- 41:42Speaker 1: of their characters. Yeah, they have an arc here and there,
- 41:46Speaker 1: but it's not developed where you get their relationship. You
- 41:49Speaker 1: see the relationship, you see you know the way that
- 41:51Speaker 1: mel Gibson has changed once his wife died. Because you're
- 41:55Speaker 1: only focused on that family, I think you get a
- 41:57Speaker 1: better opportunity to watch that character and watch those characters grow.
- 42:01Speaker 2: I agree with that, yeah, definitely.
- 42:03Speaker 1: But I will say Signs does not have the greatest
- 42:07Speaker 1: character in motion picture history, and that is Boomer the Dog,
- 42:11Speaker 1: because when Boomer the Dog in Independence Day escapes that
- 42:14Speaker 1: explosion and he jumps out of the explosion into that
- 42:18Speaker 1: little crevice that how do they survive that? All you
- 42:21Speaker 1: have to do is shut a door and then you're
- 42:23Speaker 1: able to survive a nuclear explosion of sorts. I don't
- 42:26Speaker 1: know how the dog knew to do that, but it
- 42:29Speaker 1: jumped like Tom Cruise. And there's no Boomer the Dog
- 42:33Speaker 1: in Signs. So maybe if Boomer was in Signs.
- 42:35Speaker 2: I think Tom Cruise played Boomer.
- 42:37Speaker 1: Oh yeah, yeah, all right, I think we got to
- 42:42Speaker 1: get down to it. Let's just let's just get down
- 42:44Speaker 1: to it. I still stand by there. There's gonna be
- 42:48Speaker 1: no convincing that Signs is the superior movie. Actually, you
- 42:51Speaker 1: know what, has has your girlfriend Jackie seen both of
- 42:54Speaker 1: these movies?
- 42:55Speaker 2: She probably has, right, I know for a fact she's
- 42:57Speaker 2: seen Signs.
- 42:57Speaker 1: What did she think of Signs? She likes Signs, She's
- 43:00Speaker 1: seen an Independence Day.
- 43:01Speaker 2: I don't know. Okay, listen, we talk. We like, I
- 43:05Speaker 2: bring up movies that I would think that there was
- 43:07Speaker 2: no way she went throughout life without seeing Gladiator being
- 43:10Speaker 2: one of them. We just watched that last month. She's
- 43:12Speaker 2: like I had never seen Gladiator. I'm excuse me.
- 43:14Speaker 1: Yeah, it's insane.
- 43:15Speaker 2: I'm like, because she watches the same movies over and
- 43:19Speaker 2: over again, Wage Worlds or Bohemian Rhapsody, Lemize she watches
- 43:23Speaker 2: seven thousand times, so I don't know if she's seen
- 43:26Speaker 2: Independence Day.
- 43:27Speaker 1: To be honest with you, how about she is the
- 43:29Speaker 1: deciding factor. That's because I'm not changing my stance. It
- 43:33Speaker 1: doesn't seem like you're changing your stands.
- 43:35Speaker 2: No, I'm definitely not changing my stand So we need Jackie.
- 43:37Speaker 1: When's the last time you watched Signs?
- 43:39Speaker 3: Though?
- 43:39Speaker 2: I just watched it with her. Uh, she fell asleep,
- 43:42Speaker 2: but yeah, she I mean she's seen it more than
- 43:45Speaker 2: I have. I don't remember. I didn't remember it, so
- 43:48Speaker 2: that's why I watched it maybe two weeks ago when
- 43:51Speaker 2: we had the discussion. Yeah, and I need to watch
- 43:55Speaker 2: some of his other ones again because I told her
- 43:56Speaker 2: I liked The Village Terrible and that's what she said.
- 44:00Speaker 2: And now I don't remember it because now I have
- 44:02Speaker 2: to watch it again.
- 44:02Speaker 1: He made a movie called The Visit with two kids
- 44:06Speaker 1: that go to visit their grandparents, and that was sort
- 44:09Speaker 1: of his resurgence. It was a smaller film It was
- 44:12Speaker 1: after he made these big budget like Avatar and he
- 44:15Speaker 1: made that movie with Will Smith that were like three
- 44:17Speaker 1: hundred million dollar movies. This was more of a smaller
- 44:19Speaker 1: film of return to his horror roots. And I remember
- 44:22Speaker 1: liking the Visit. I think that's the name of the movie.
- 44:25Speaker 1: I don't think it was too well received, but I
- 44:27Speaker 1: remember me and my ex thoroughly enjoying that movie. Then
- 44:29Speaker 1: he did the Split movie. Did you see Split? Yes,
- 44:34Speaker 1: that was pretty good, and then they did The Glass
- 44:37Speaker 1: which which was not as good visually, it was really
- 44:40Speaker 1: impressive with a lot of different lighting stuff going on
- 44:43Speaker 1: with that movie. But he's made so many weird choices
- 44:46Speaker 1: with his movies. He made The Knock in the Cabin
- 44:48Speaker 1: or Cabin in the Woods with Dave Bautista, which was
- 44:52Speaker 1: like a gay couple with their kids and they had
- 44:54Speaker 1: to make a sacrifice for one of the parents to
- 44:57Speaker 1: It was really really strange movie. And then his daughter's
- 45:01Speaker 1: now directing movies. He directs directed a terrible movie, was terrible.
- 45:05Speaker 1: What was that one with What's your Face? Dakota Fans?
- 45:09Speaker 2: Oh no, we didn't watch that The Watchers, right, the
- 45:11Speaker 2: one of the woods. Yeah, yeah, we didn't even watch.
- 45:14Speaker 1: It awful awful. So his his family, I guess isn't
- 45:17Speaker 1: talented because the daughter not too good of a singer,
- 45:20Speaker 1: other daughter terrible director, and he's just coasting. Buy But uh,
- 45:25Speaker 1: all right, Jonathan, we'll have to have you back then.
- 45:27Speaker 2: All right. Yeah, so I'll make sure that Jackie watches
- 45:30Speaker 2: Independence Day and then.
- 45:31Speaker 1: We need the final vote. Jackie will decide which is
- 45:34Speaker 1: the superior.
- 45:35Speaker 2: And now you said the visit was a m Night night.
- 45:38Speaker 1: Yeah, I liked it. Again. Obviously, it has the m
- 45:41Speaker 1: Night tropes that you you know, used to do with
- 45:43Speaker 1: the crazy twist and turns and whatnot. But I enjoyed it.
- 45:46Speaker 1: I thought it was fine. How'd you think he did
- 45:48Speaker 1: on the podcast? I thought you started off a bit slow,
- 45:50Speaker 1: a little nervous maybea first, but then as soon as
- 45:52Speaker 1: like we got into it, I thought you brought the energy.
- 45:55Speaker 2: Yeah. No, listen, I, like you said, we might not
- 45:58Speaker 2: have the same opinion, but I have my basis for
- 46:01Speaker 2: it and my reasoning. Yeah, Matta started off a little slow.
- 46:04Speaker 2: I didn't want to, you know, jump well on top
- 46:08Speaker 2: of you or you talk over you. So just first
- 46:12Speaker 2: time on a podcast, so just trying to learn the.
- 46:14Speaker 1: Ropes I thought you did fantastic.
- 46:16Speaker 2: All right, I appreciate it.
- 46:17Speaker 1: You know, I wanted to bring up watually one thing,
- 46:18Speaker 1: back to Independence State. I just like, I hate bashing
- 46:22Speaker 1: the movie because so I'm gonna give it some praise.
- 46:25Speaker 1: I remember seeing that that one in theaters as well
- 46:27Speaker 1: with my grandma and my cousin, and there was a
- 46:30Speaker 1: scene with an autopsy. It's like they finally get the alien.
- 46:33Speaker 1: I think Will Smith like punches the alien Welcome to Earth,
- 46:36Speaker 1: punches it in the face. By the way, listen to
- 46:39Speaker 1: Opie and Anthony with Patris O'Neil. He breaks down Independence Day.
- 46:44Speaker 1: It's like the funniest radio of all time. It's got
- 46:46Speaker 1: to be somewhere on YouTube. But I remember seeing this
- 46:49Speaker 1: movie in theaters and that autopsy scene and they cut
- 46:52Speaker 1: the alien open and then there's like this jump scare.
- 46:55Speaker 1: There's this loud sound and I remember vividly the whole
- 46:59Speaker 1: audience screaming, And it's probably the first instance where I
- 47:02Speaker 1: can remember a jump scare with an audience.
- 47:05Speaker 2: Is that when they open him and then the little
- 47:07Speaker 2: head is in.
- 47:07Speaker 1: There, yeah yeah, yeah, and then he starts do you
- 47:10Speaker 1: know who?
- 47:11Speaker 2: Do you know who the doctor is?
- 47:12Speaker 1: Yeah? Brett Spiner, the guy from.
- 47:14Speaker 2: Stark Start Data.
- 47:15Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 47:17Speaker 2: The only reason I know that is because my dad
- 47:19Speaker 2: was a treky. The only reason I know that.
- 47:21Speaker 1: Yeah, I've seen Brett Spiner at quite a few conventions. Okay,
- 47:24Speaker 1: he's uh, he's aged. Yeah, and then they tried to
- 47:27Speaker 1: make him data because they brought back like Picard. He's
- 47:30Speaker 1: supposed to be like Agels, but he's like you know, old.
- 47:32Speaker 1: So it's always rough when they try and bring back characters. Ye,
- 47:35Speaker 1: all right, but we're gonna bring you back, Jonathan. Thank
- 47:37Speaker 1: you for joining me on this addition of Film Real.
- 47:40Speaker 1: We'll be back, and I promise I say this every week.
- 47:42Speaker 1: I say I'm going to finish the Transformers podcast. I
- 47:45Speaker 1: did two parts of the Transformers we're supposed to do
- 47:47Speaker 1: part three. I haven't done it in three months, so
- 47:49Speaker 1: maybe they'll be a bit. Maybe they'll just continuously never
- 47:52Speaker 1: finish Transformers. But thank you all for listening doing that
- 47:55Speaker 1: on all the movies. Yeah, I did all the movies
- 47:57Speaker 1: to talk about my love for the franchisees and whatnot.
- 48:00Speaker 1: Did you eventually see Transformers one?
- 48:03Speaker 2: No we didn't.
- 48:03Speaker 1: Yeah, that's why I'm supposed to review.
- 48:05Speaker 2: But I am a big fan of the Transformer movies, of.
- 48:07Speaker 1: The shitty Michael Bay ones. They're terrible. Okay, we'll have
- 48:11Speaker 1: to get you back on all right. We'll discuss maybe
- 48:15Speaker 1: Transformers next time. And Jackie's vote on Independence Day and signs.
- 48:19Speaker 1: Thank you all for listening so long.
