SPEAKER_00: Hey friend, welcome to Wilder Whispers, a space where we slow down and listen for God's voice in the ordinary moments of life.
• 0:15
SPEAKER_00: I'm Shay Wooden, and I'm so glad you're here.
• 0:18
SPEAKER_00: We often expect God to speak through big moments, a sermon, a breakthrough, a perfectly quiet prayer time, and he does.
• 0:26
SPEAKER_00: But so often, he chooses quieter ways, in the middle of everyday life, in the unnoticed moments, in gentle whispers that invite us closer.
• 0:36
SPEAKER_00: Each episode, I'll share one simple story and the quiet truth God revealed through it, not because it was extraordinary, but because he was present.
• 0:46
SPEAKER_00: So wherever you are right now, take a breath, let's slow down, and listen together.
• 0:54
SPEAKER_00: Have you ever wondered if the small things you do really matter?
• 0:58
SPEAKER_00: A phone call, a conversation, holding a door, stopping to help, doing the job that no one notices?
• 1:06
SPEAKER_00: Most acts of obedience feel surprisingly small, insignificant, forgettable.
• 1:12
SPEAKER_00: But what if God is using today's simple obedience to prepare the way for tomorrow's miracle?
• 1:20
SPEAKER_00: I'll never forget the sound.
• 1:22
  SPEAKER_00: Click.
• 1:23
SPEAKER_00: It was one of those sounds that instantly makes your heart sink.
• 1:27
SPEAKER_00: I had just dropped down off at the airport for a trip, and Brittany was still little enough to be in a car seat.
• 1:32
SPEAKER_00: As I had done countless times before, I opened the door, tossed my keys out of the driver's seat, and leaned in to buckle Brittany into her car seat.
• 1:42
SPEAKER_00: Without thinking, I hit the lock button and closed the door.
• 1:48
SPEAKER_00: The moment I heard that click, I realized what I had done.
• 1:52
SPEAKER_00: My keys were sitting on the driver's seat.
• 1:55
SPEAKER_00: My little baby girl was locked inside the car.
• 1:58
SPEAKER_00: This was long before cell phones, so calling for help wasn't an option.
• 2:02
SPEAKER_00: It was a windy fall day somewhere in the mid-40s, not dangerously cold, but certainly not the kind of weather where you wanted to stand outside for long with the child locked in a car.
• 2:11
SPEAKER_00: As people walked toward the terminal, I stopped them one after another.
• 2:15
SPEAKER_00: Would you please tell someone I need help?
• 2:18
SPEAKER_00: Could you please send someone out?
• 2:20
  SPEAKER_00: Every person politely agreed.
• 2:22
SPEAKER_00: I watched them disappear into the airport.
• 2:24
  SPEAKER_00: Then I waited.
• 2:26
  SPEAKER_00: No one came.
• 2:27
SPEAKER_00: Eventually those same people came back out, got into their cars, and drove away.
• 2:32
  SPEAKER_00: Still no help.
• 2:34
SPEAKER_00: With every passing minute, the uncertainty grew.
• 2:37
SPEAKER_00: Then an older couple pulled into the parking space in front of me.
• 2:41
SPEAKER_00: I explained what had happened.
• 2:43
SPEAKER_00: The gentleman looked at me and said, I'll stay here with your daughter.
• 2:46
  SPEAKER_00: You go get help.
• 2:48
SPEAKER_00: It was the first genuine offer of assistance I'd received, so I ran into the terminal.
• 2:53
SPEAKER_00: The first person I found was a police officer.
• 2:56
  SPEAKER_00: Surely he could help.
• 2:57
  SPEAKER_00: I explained the situation.
• 2:59
SPEAKER_00: He simply said he couldn't help.
• 3:01
  SPEAKER_00: Disappointed, I kept looking.
• 3:04
SPEAKER_00: A few minutes later, I found one of the airport porters.
• 3:07
SPEAKER_00: Before I could finish my explanation, he said yes.
• 3:10
SPEAKER_00: He grabbed an emergency lockout kit and immediately started running across the parking lot with me.
• 3:15
SPEAKER_00: As we ran, I noticed he was struggling to catch his breath.
• 3:19
SPEAKER_00: Then he told me why.
• 3:20
SPEAKER_00: He had just returned to work after recovering from a heart attack.
• 3:24
SPEAKER_00: Yet here he was, running across a parking lot, helping a young mother he had never met.
• 3:30
SPEAKER_00: Within minutes, the car was unlocked, and Brittany was safe.
• 3:35
SPEAKER_00: As I stood there beside my car, thanking God that Brittany was safe, the Holy Spirit brought another memory to my mind.
• 3:41
SPEAKER_00: It was from that very same airport only a few months earlier.
• 3:44
SPEAKER_00: Don and I had been dropping someone off when we noticed a woman standing beside her car with a flat tire.
• 3:50
SPEAKER_00: Don wasn't eager to stop, it was cold.
• 3:52
SPEAKER_00: We had somewhere else to be, and surely someone else would come along.
• 3:56
SPEAKER_00: I remember saying to him, if that were me, you'd want someone to stop and help me.
• 4:02
SPEAKER_00: So he turned the car around, we stopped, and he helped her change the flat tire.
• 4:07
SPEAKER_00: Then we got back in the car and we went on with our day.
• 4:10
SPEAKER_00: Standing there in that airport parking lot after my own ordeal, it felt as though the Holy Spirit quietly whispered, Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.
• 4:21
SPEAKER_00: For years I thought that was the lesson.
• 4:23
SPEAKER_00: It was a beautiful lesson, and it was true.
• 4:27
SPEAKER_00: But it wasn't the whole lesson.
• 4:29
SPEAKER_00: Years later, while reading Nehemiah III, I came across a man named Shawan.
• 4:35
SPEAKER_00: At first he seemed like just another name in a long list of builders, but then I realized God had been showing me something much deeper all along.
• 4:43
SPEAKER_00: You never know what God is preparing through your present obedience.
• 4:47
SPEAKER_00: The more I read scripture, the more I realized this is simply how God works.
• 4:52
SPEAKER_00: He often accomplishes extraordinary things through what appear to be very simple acts of obedience.
• 4:57
SPEAKER_00: When we read the Bible, it's easy to focus on the miracles.
• 5:01
SPEAKER_00: We remember David defeating Goliath, Moses parting the Red Sea, and Noah building the Ark.
• 5:07
SPEAKER_00: But long before any of these extraordinary moments took place, there were countless ordinary moments of obedience.
• 5:13
  SPEAKER_00: Noah simply kept building.
• 5:16
  SPEAKER_00: David faithfully tended sheep.
• 5:18
SPEAKER_00: Moses kept showing up to lead people who often didn't want to follow.
• 5:22
SPEAKER_00: Most of the people God used in Scripture weren't trying to make history.
• 5:27
SPEAKER_00: They were simply doing the next thing God had placed in front of them.
• 5:31
SPEAKER_00: That's the nature of faithfulness.
• 5:33
SPEAKER_00: It usually doesn't feel dramatic, and it rarely makes headlines.
• 5:37
SPEAKER_00: In fact, it often feels unnoticed.
• 5:40
SPEAKER_00: One conversation, one act of kindness, one faithful yes, one person to serve, one gate to repair.
• 5:50
SPEAKER_00: The truth is, we almost never know the full impact of our obedience while we're living it.
• 5:55
SPEAKER_00: We see today's assignment, God sees tomorrow's purpose.
• 6:00
SPEAKER_00: That's why faithfulness almost always feels ordinary before it becomes extraordinary.
• 6:06
SPEAKER_00: And nowhere is that illustrated more beautifully than in the story of a man named Shalin.
• 6:10
SPEAKER_00: If you've ever read Nehemiah chapter three, it's easy to skim right past his name.
• 6:16
SPEAKER_00: After all, the chapter is filled with people rebuilding walls, hanging gates, and repairing sections of the city.
• 6:23
SPEAKER_00: At first glance, it reads more like a construction report than an inspiring story.
• 6:29
SPEAKER_00: But that's exactly the point.
• 6:31
SPEAKER_00: Nehemiah three isn't just a record of construction projects.
• 6:34
SPEAKER_00: It's a record of ordinary people faithfully doing the work God placed in front of them.
• 6:39
SPEAKER_00: Each person repaired the section that had been entrusted to them.
• 6:43
SPEAKER_00: Not everyone built the entire wall.
• 6:45
SPEAKER_00: Not everyone had the same assignment.
• 6:47
SPEAKER_00: They simply repaired the gate in front of them.
• 6:50
SPEAKER_00: Shalon was one of those people.
• 6:52
SPEAKER_00: Nehemiah tells us that he repaired the fountain gate.
• 6:55
SPEAKER_00: He rebuilt it, hung its doors with their bolts and bars, and repaired the wall by the pool of Shala, the same pool later known as the pool of Salom.
• 7:05
SPEAKER_00: To Shalon, it probably felt like another day's work, another section of wall, another gate.
• 7:11
SPEAKER_00: There were no crowds applauding, no miracles taking place, no indication that his work would ever be remembered.
• 7:18
SPEAKER_00: He was simply being faithful with what God had placed in front of him.
• 7:22
SPEAKER_00: But while Shalon saw another construction project, God saw something much bigger.
• 7:28
SPEAKER_00: Because God always sees beyond the work he's given us today.
• 7:31
SPEAKER_00: He sees how our faithfulness fits into his larger story.
• 7:36
  SPEAKER_00: Centuries passed.
• 7:37
  SPEAKER_00: Empires rose and fell.
• 7:39
  SPEAKER_00: Generations came and went.
• 7:41
SPEAKER_00: I doubt anyone remembered the day Shalon repaired the fountain gate or restored the pool of Shala.
• 7:47
SPEAKER_00: It was just another job completed by another faithful servant.
• 7:52
  SPEAKER_00: Or so it seemed.
• 7:53
SPEAKER_00: Then one day, Jesus met a man who had been blind from birth.
• 7:58
SPEAKER_00: His disciples wanted to know who had sinned.
• 8:00
SPEAKER_00: Was it the man or his parents?
• 8:02
SPEAKER_00: But Jesus had a different purpose in mind.
• 8:05
SPEAKER_00: He made mud, placed it on the man's eyes, and then said, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam.
• 8:12
SPEAKER_00: That wasn't just any pool.
• 8:14
SPEAKER_00: It was the very pool Shalon had repaired generations earlier.
• 8:18
  SPEAKER_00: Can you imagine that?
• 8:19
SPEAKER_00: Shalon never met the blind man.
• 8:22
SPEAKER_00: He never heard Jesus speak those words.
• 8:24
SPEAKER_00: He never watched that man return with his sight restored.
• 8:28
SPEAKER_00: He never knew that one ordinary day of repairing a gate and a pool would become part of the setting for one of Christ's miracles.
• 8:36
SPEAKER_00: Yet that's exactly what God was doing.
• 8:38
SPEAKER_00: While Shalon thought he was repairing a wall, God was preparing a place.
• 8:43
SPEAKER_00: That's often how God works.
• 8:45
SPEAKER_00: We see today's assignment, God sees tomorrow's story.
• 8:49
SPEAKER_00: Our faithful yes becomes part of a story we'll never live to see.
• 8:55
SPEAKER_00: The truth is, most of us will never know the full impact of our obedience.
• 9:00
  SPEAKER_00: Don certainly didn't.
• 9:01
SPEAKER_00: When he pulled the car over to help that woman with her flat tire, he thought he was simply changing a tire.
• 9:07
SPEAKER_00: He had no idea that months later, when I found myself in desperate need of help at the same airport, God would bring that moment back to my mind.
• 9:16
  SPEAKER_00: In the airport porter?
• 9:18
SPEAKER_00: He probably didn't think twice about helping me.
• 9:20
SPEAKER_00: He was simply being faithful with the opportunity God had placed in front of him.
• 9:25
SPEAKER_00: He had just returned to work after recovering from a heart attack, yet he didn't hesitate to say yes.
• 9:30
SPEAKER_00: I wonder if he ever knew that decades later I'd still be telling the story of his kindness.
• 9:36
SPEAKER_00: The answer is probably not.
• 9:38
SPEAKER_00: Because that's often how God works.
• 9:40
SPEAKER_00: He uses our faithful yes to accomplish purposes we'll often never see.
• 9:45
SPEAKER_00: A phone call, a meal, a conversation, a note of encouragement, a helping hand, a gate repaired.
• 9:53
SPEAKER_00: In the moment, they all seem so small.
• 9:57
SPEAKER_00: But in the hands of God, they become part of something much bigger than we can see.
• 10:02
SPEAKER_00: The encouraging word you speak today may strengthen someone for a battle they'll face tomorrow.
• 10:08
SPEAKER_00: The opportunity God places in front of you today may prepare the place where someone else encounters the faithfulness of God.
• 10:15
SPEAKER_00: That's why we don't measure obedience by how significant it feels.
• 10:19
SPEAKER_00: We measure it by our willingness to say yes.
• 10:22
SPEAKER_00: Because God sees what we can't.
• 10:24
  SPEAKER_00: Don didn't know.
• 10:26
SPEAKER_00: The airport porter didn't know.
• 10:28
  SPEAKER_00: Shalin didn't know.
• 10:30
  SPEAKER_00: But God did.
• 10:31
SPEAKER_00: Because God never wastes a faithful act of obedience.
• 10:35
SPEAKER_00: Even when no one else remembers it, he does.
• 10:39
SPEAKER_00: He weaves every faithful yes into his larger story, even when we never see the ending.
• 10:46
SPEAKER_00: So let me ask you, what gate has God placed in front of you today?
• 10:51
SPEAKER_00: Maybe it's a person who needs encouragement.
• 10:54
SPEAKER_00: Maybe it's someone you've been holding back from forgiving.
• 10:57
SPEAKER_00: Maybe it's a neighbor, a co-worker, or a stranger who simply needs someone to stop and notice them.
• 11:05
SPEAKER_00: Or perhaps it's a responsibility God has entrusted to you, one that feels ordinary, unnoticed, or even insignificant.
• 11:13
SPEAKER_00: Maybe you've been tempted to overlook it because it doesn't seem important enough.
• 11:17
SPEAKER_00: But what if faithfulness isn't measured by how big the assignment is?
• 11:21
SPEAKER_00: Or what if it's measured by simply saying yes to what God has placed in front of you?
• 11:27
SPEAKER_00: You don't have to repair the whole wall.
• 11:29
SPEAKER_00: You simply have to repair the gate that's in front of you.
• 11:33
SPEAKER_00: Because today's quiet faithfulness may become part of a story that only God can see.
• 11:39
SPEAKER_00: And what feels like an ordinary yes today may become someone else's miracle tomorrow.
• 11:47
SPEAKER_00: So today, choose faithfulness over significance.
• 11:50
SPEAKER_00: Repair the gate in front of you.
• 11:52
SPEAKER_00: Serve the person God has placed before you.
• 11:55
  SPEAKER_00: Do the unseen work.
• 11:57
  SPEAKER_00: Offer the quiet encouragement.
• 11:59
  SPEAKER_00: Extend the helping hand.
• 12:02
SPEAKER_00: You may never fully understand what God is building through your obedience, but you can trust that He is weaving every faithful yes into His greater story.
• 12:11
  SPEAKER_00: Let's pray.
• 12:12
SPEAKER_00: Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for reminding us that no act of obedience is ever wasted.
• 12:18
SPEAKER_00: Teach us to be faithful in the ordinary things.
• 12:21
SPEAKER_00: Help us to serve without needing recognition, to obey without knowing the outcome, and to trust that you are working far beyond what we can see.
• 12:30
SPEAKER_00: Give us eyes to notice the people you've placed in our path, and hearts that are quick to respond when you prompt us to help.
• 12:38
SPEAKER_00: May we faithfully repair the gates you've assigned to us, knowing that you alone see the full story.
• 12:44
SPEAKER_00: Use our ordinary obedience to accomplish extraordinary purposes for your kingdom.
• 12:49
SPEAKER_00: In the name of Jesus we pray.
• 12:52
  SPEAKER_00: Amen.
• 12:54
SPEAKER_00: As I think back on those two days at the airport, I can't help but wonder how many moments like that happen every single day.
• 13:00
SPEAKER_00: How many people quietly choose to obey the gentle prompting of the Holy Spirit, never realizing whose burden they're lifting, never knowing what God may be preparing through their simple act of faithfulness.
• 13:12
SPEAKER_00: I wonder if heaven will reveal stories we never knew existed.
• 13:16
SPEAKER_00: Stories that began with one simple yes.
• 13:19
SPEAKER_00: We may never meet the person whose life was changed because we stopped to help.
• 13:23
SPEAKER_00: We may never witness the miracle God prepared to what felt like an ordinary act of obedience.
• 13:28
  SPEAKER_00: Neither did Shallon.
• 13:30
SPEAKER_00: He never returned to the pool.
• 13:32
SPEAKER_00: He never watched a blind man wash and come back seeing.
• 13:35
SPEAKER_00: He simply repaired the gate in front of him.
• 13:38
SPEAKER_00: And then he trusted God with the rest.
• 13:41
SPEAKER_00: Perhaps that's how God has always worked.
• 13:44
SPEAKER_00: He invites ordinary people to faithfully do today's work while he quietly prepares tomorrow's story.
• 13:50
SPEAKER_00: So don't underestimate the ordinary opportunities God places in front of you.
• 13:55
SPEAKER_00: Repair the gate, extend the kindness, say yes to the prompting of the Holy Spirit.
• 14:02
SPEAKER_00: Because while you may only see the gate in front of you, God is already writing tomorrow's story.
• 14:08
SPEAKER_00: Today's whisper to carry with you is this Repair the gate in front of you.
• 14:12
SPEAKER_00: You don't know who will need access to a miracle later.
• 14:16
SPEAKER_00: Thanks for spending this time with me on Wilder Whispers.
• 14:19
SPEAKER_00: I hope today's story reminded you that God is closer than we often realize and that he's still speaking, even in the ordinary moments of life.
• 14:27
SPEAKER_00: Whispers are the language of closeness.
• 14:30
SPEAKER_00: They invite us to lean in.
• 14:32
SPEAKER_00: As you go about your day, whether you're working, resting, driving, or just trying to catch your breath, stay attentive.
• 14:40
SPEAKER_00: God is not far away.
• 14:42
  SPEAKER_00: He's not silent.
• 14:44
  SPEAKER_00: He's near.
• 14:45
  SPEAKER_00: And he's speaking.
• 14:46
SPEAKER_00: Until next time, keep listening.
• 14:48
SPEAKER_00: This is Wilder Whispers, and I'm Shaywood.
