- 0:00Speaker 1: Author's note, I've always wanted to write, but not until
- 0:04Speaker 1: I discovered the old pulp science fantasy magazines at the
- 0:07Speaker 1: age of sixteen did this general desire become a specific
- 0:10Speaker 1: urge to write science fantasy adventures. I took a lot
- 0:13Speaker 1: of detours on the way I discovered s F in
- 0:15Speaker 1: its golden age, the age of Kutner, C. L. Moore,
- 0:19Speaker 1: Leigh Brackett at Hamilton, and Jack Vance. But while I
- 0:22Speaker 1: was still collecting rejection slips for my early efforts, the
- 0:25Speaker 1: fashion changed. Adventures on faraway worlds and strange dimensions went
- 0:29Speaker 1: out of fashion, and the new look in science fiction,
- 0:32Speaker 1: emphasis on the science, came in. So my first stories
- 0:36Speaker 1: were straight science fiction, and I'm not trying to put
- 0:39Speaker 1: down that kind of story. It has its place. By
- 0:42Speaker 1: and large, the kind of science fiction which makes tomorrow's
- 0:44Speaker 1: headlines as near as this morning's coffee has enlarged popular
- 0:48Speaker 1: awareness of the modern, miraculous world of science we live in.
- 0:52Speaker 1: It has helped generations of young people feel at ease
- 0:54Speaker 1: with a rapidly changing world. But Fashion's change, old Love's return,
- 1:00Speaker 1: and now that Sputnik's clutter up the sky with new
- 1:02Speaker 1: and unfamiliar moons, The readers of science fiction are willing
- 1:05Speaker 1: to wait for tomorrow to read tomorrow's headlines once again.
- 1:09Speaker 1: I think there is a place, a wish, a need,
- 1:12Speaker 1: and hunger for the wonder and color of the world
- 1:15Speaker 1: way out, the world beyond the stars, the world we
- 1:18Speaker 1: won't live to see. That is why I wrote The
- 1:21Speaker 1: Door through Space. Marian Zimmer Bradley end of author's note,
