- 0:07On September 4th, 1978, the Baltimore Colts faced the Dallas Cowboys at Texas Stadium for the first Monday Night Football Game of the Year.
- 0:15Baltimore was coached by Ted Marchabrota and they had won the AFC East Division Championship for three straight seasons.
- 0:21But Marchabrota's success stopped there, as the team had not won a single playoff game in any of those three seasons.
- 0:27The Cowboys were the defending Super Bowl champs and were coached by Tom Landry in his 19th season with the team.
- 0:33This audio recording is from the CBS Radio broadcast featuring announcers Jack Buck and Hank Stram.
- 1:03The left tackle was Mike Barne, the right tackle was Joe Erman, number 76.
- 1:08The right end was John Dutton, number 78.
- 1:12The left tackle was Mike Barne, number 78.
- 1:19The right tackle was Mike Barne, number 78.
- 1:23The left tackle was Mike Barne, number 78.
- 1:27The right tackle was Joe Erman, number 76.
- 1:33The right end was John Dutton, number 78.
- 1:36The left linebacker was Darryl Luce, the middle linebacker at Stiminini.
- 1:41The right linebacker was Stan White, number 53.
- 1:44The left corner was Norm Thompson, the right corner was Doug Nettles, who was starting that position for the first time.
- 1:51Strong safety was Butch Laird and pre-safety was Lyle Blackwood.
- 1:56These cowboys are very shortly will be coming out of the field here at Dallas.
- 2:00Their offense is anchored by Roger Stompach and they have a new starter at the wide receiver position.
- 2:06Yes, the great young receiver from Stanford, number 80 will start at that position.
- 2:11The left tackle will be Pat Donovan, number 67.
- 2:14The left guard, Herbert Scott, 68.
- 2:17Senator John Fitzgerald, the oldest member of that offensive line, number 62.
- 2:21The right guard, Tom Rafferty, number 64, right tackle, Andy Frederick, number 71.
- 2:27Tight end, 89. Billy Joe Dupre from Michigan State University.
- 2:32Wingback, Drew Pearson, number 88.
- 2:35Quarterback, Roger Stompach, number 12.
- 2:38And running back, Tony Dorsett, number 33, along with Proback, Robert Newhouse, house number 44.
- 2:46The defensive personality of this team, left end Ed Tutel Jones, number 72.
- 2:51Left tackle, Jeff Rowe Pugh, number 75.
- 2:54Right tackle, Randy White, 54.
- 2:57Right end, Harvey Martin, number 79.
- 2:59Left linebacker, 56. Tom Hennerson, middle linebacker, Bob Brunig, the right linebacker, number 50.
- 3:07Dee Dee Lewis, the left corner, number 31. Vinnie Barnes, the right cornerback, number 25.
- 3:13Aaron Kyle, strong safety, 41. Charlie Waters, and the free safety, number 43, Cliff Harris.
- 3:21With regard to the Baltimore Colts, without Bert Jones and Michael Mitchell tonight,
- 3:26the Colts are without 82% of their 1977 offense, in that last year,
- 3:32Jones passes for more than 2,600 yards, and he ran for 146.
- 3:37While Mitchell gained more than 1,100 yards on the ground, the Colts as a team gained 4,588 yards.
- 3:44And we know that the Colts are counting on Don McCauley and Ron Lee to pick up the slack,
- 3:49and it'll be interesting to see the approach of the Baltimore Colts tonight,
- 3:53whether they play it close to the vaster, try to open it up and steal one from the Cowboy.
- 3:57No, I don't think they'll try to do that. I think that Mike Kirkland will have every opportunity in the world
- 4:02to use the tools and the skills that they would normally use with Bert Jones at the quarterback position.
- 4:07They're going to try very carefully not to reduce the size of the field for the Dallas Cowboys.
- 4:11They're going to try to make them go the full distance anytime they get possession of the ball.
- 4:15The biggest problem that you have when a young quarterback plays is that you don't want to put your team
- 4:19in a position where you create a combo or you throw an interception,
- 4:23make some kind of a mental mistake where the Dallas Cowboys would have possession
- 4:26and only have 30, 40, or 25 yards to go for a touchdown.
- 4:30That's the one thing that they want to eliminate.
- 4:32You know, there's three phases. As you know, Jack, of the professional football and off-football,
- 4:37there's the offense, the defense, and the specialty teams.
- 4:40And I've always felt very firm with two out of the three.
- 4:44Then you've always got a chance to win the football game.
- 4:46And so the Baltimore Colts could realistically not win the game offensively,
- 4:50but win the other two and could come out the winner.
- 4:52And along those lines, I know that some people look at the specialty teams of the Baltimore Colts
- 4:57in a rather suspicious fashion, and they were hurt frequently in that department last year.
- 5:02I had the pleasure of watching them play an off-standing football team.
- 5:05They were burned with the specialty teams of other clubs in the past,
- 5:09and they'd better be good tonight in order to compete.
- 5:15Peter, he indicated that they worked as way to get them.
- 5:19He's been covering kicks and presenting teams from blocking kicks.
- 5:22So I'm sure that they'll work very well. They were very well prepared in that area.
- 5:27Plus the fact that they know that they just can't afford to do a poor job in a specialty team area
- 5:31where their offense is in such a way to make it is and expect to win.
- 5:34The Cowboys in the preseason were winners over the 49ers, Denver and Pittsburgh,
- 5:39and they lost to their state neighbor, Houston.
- 5:41Baltimore's only victory was against Detroit, and that was their last time out.
- 5:45They lost to Pittsburgh, they lost to Tampa, and they lost to Washington.
- 5:49But all three of those games that they lost in the preseason,
- 5:52they were either ahead in two of them at half-time, and they were tied at half-time of the other.
- 5:57Then they played the additional people that they had to play in order to pair this quad down
- 6:01to the 45-man player limit, and they ended up losing it.
- 6:05But they've been saving something for the Cowboys, and we'll see it very shortly.
- 6:09Both teams are on the field, and we'll soon have the opening kickoff.
- 6:13E. Gadd, how irresistible you found that luxurious, elegant Eulich Electrious saw last fall.
- 6:20Ah, but you judiciously opted.
- 6:22The Dallas Cowboys have won the toss, and I almost have the feeling that Baltimore would almost prefer it that way
- 6:27to let their defensive unit, which is very, very good, try to set the tempo for this game.
- 6:32Yes, I think that's a good feeling when you're going to a game like the Baltimore Coast are going into this one.
- 6:37I think if they feel they can make the Dallas Cowboys travel 75 or 80 yards,
- 6:42why they've got a good chance possibly to get possession of the ball somewhere along the line,
- 6:47get good field position, and get it in a position to strike quickly in this game.
- 6:51Tony Linnard, the veteran from Austria who kicks the field goals, also is the kickoff man,
- 6:57so the ball will be teed up on the 35-yard line, and as you tune us in here on CBS,
- 7:03the Colts will be going from our right to our left, and the deep men for the Cowboys are going to be putsch Johnson.
- 7:09He'll be back inside the five-yard line, and he'll soon be joined now by Dennis Thurman.
- 7:15And Thurman for the Cowboys is one of the few rookies, only five who have made the grade with the Cowboys this year.
- 7:24Jack, it's interesting to note that five young people made this Dallas Cowboys team again, Larry Bethea,
- 7:29their number one draft choice from Michigan State, although it's Blackwell from Houston,
- 7:34number four, Tom Randall, number seven from Iowa State, Dennis Thurman, number 11, Leavenpick,
- 7:39number 32, and Rapheel Septiana, free agent kicker that we drafted in New Orleans, number 10, just a year ago.
- 7:47Okay, we have putsch Johnson back there with Dennis Thurman, and a deep kick goes into the end zone.
- 7:52It's taken by Johnson after the 10-15. He bundles the ball near the 25-yard line, and Baltimore has the football.
- 8:01Butch Johnson caught it three yards deep in the end zone. He came out, he was hit at the 20.
- 8:07He went down at the 25, and the rookie, Reese McCall, a tight end from Auburn, fell on it,
- 8:14and it is Baltimore's ball first and 10 to go on the Dallas 25.
- 8:20You know, an interesting thing about that return, number one, it was a left return,
- 8:24and Butch Johnson was carrying the ball in his right arm. The inside pressure got a piece of it.
- 8:28He fumbled, they recovered, and Baltimore has possession. Time for a big play.
- 8:32And now he goes to the right side. Roger Carr is split left. Mike Kirkland is the quarterback in the I formation.
- 8:38He has leaps to pull back up close, gives it to Leakes, and he drives over the left yard position for only a couple of yards.
- 8:45He's in the backfield, along with John McCauley, who along with Ron Lee will try to take the place of the departed.
- 8:52Lydell Mitchell and Harvey Martin made the first tackle, and a pick up on the play of three yards,
- 8:58it's second down and seven for the Coles, going from our right to our left on the 22 yard line of the Cowboys.
- 9:04Up front the Cowboys, that's Jones, Jester O'Pew, Randy White, and Harvey Martin.
- 9:09Roger Carr is to this side with Glenn Dowdy's, flank right. Out of the I formation again, Kirkland a quarterback,
- 9:16hands off to McCauley, he's hit at the line of scrimmage, he gained the yard, it's going to be third down and sixth, and Randy White took him down.
- 9:23Yes he did, and they're trying to run, they ran from an I formation that time, they're trying to run to the flex defense,
- 9:28the tackle or the end, who is off the line of scrimmage, they're trying to attack that area.
- 9:32That time they didn't attack it very well, their people, their left side just did not blow the people off the line of scrimmage,
- 9:38Robert Prett, and just did not get the surge that you have to have to make yardies in that play.
- 9:44Thomas Henderson, Bob Bruning, and D.D. Lewis are the linebackers for the Cowboys, and Mike Kirkland might throw the ball for the first time.
- 9:51It's on the 21-yard line of the Cowboys, and Kirkland on a draw play, gives it to Leakes,
- 9:58his tackle at the 20-yard line, and it'll be fourth down as Guffro Piero made the tackle,
- 10:03along with the linebacker Henderson, first Martin made the tackle, then White made the tackle,
- 10:08and now Pugh has made a tackle, and Tony Linnhart, who kicked off only moments ago, about a minute and 40 seconds ago,
- 10:15will try a 27-yard field goal to put the colts on top, here in the early goal.
- 10:21You know, one thing about the Dallas defense, they read when they act pursuant tackle as well as anybody in the league,
- 10:26and in this situation, I thought perhaps they might try to throw a play action pass early,
- 10:30because that's something that you have to do especially on early downs.
- 10:33Linnhart will spot it, Linnhart will kick it, we wait for the snap, and for it's blue, there's the snap, the set, the kick,
- 10:40it's got a chance, and it is covered!
- 10:43Move it off to the right, so the Colts will follow the ball, and early off the cut of it,
- 10:47they recover the fumble, and they missed the 27-yard field goal with a score, nothing, nothing, let's take the time out.
- 10:55The day is done, it's time to let it go, it's the moment to unwind, so just say goodbye,
- 11:11and for the King of the earth, and settle back, and to be yourself, no matter what you do,
- 11:23no matter when or where, you know a glass of blood is like an easy chip,
- 11:35when you say bird, wild, you said it all, and I the bush say good.
- 12:01The Colts get the ball with their own 20-yard line, as a result of the miss field goal, we have 12-49 remaining in the first quarter, no score,
- 12:09and Roger Stubbock will bring Dorsett and Newhouse as they set back out in the I-formation,
- 12:15Drew Pearson comes to the right side, and Tony Hill, they have two tight ends with Sal de N Dupree running from the two tight ends,
- 12:24Newhouse, back for five, six, seven yards, over the left side, and the two tight ends, appears to be something that the Colts are going to have to deal with early.
- 12:34Well they're trying to neutralize the weak linebacker, the linebacker away from the tight end side, Stan White,
- 12:40they ran a misdirection play, a counter play, and handled very well, Newhouse picked up a thick chunk on first down.
- 12:47And it is second down and free as a result from the down as 27-yard line, in the I-formation, this is Dorsett got outside,
- 12:55got a first down across the 30-yard line, and tackled in the vicinity of the 32s, so the Cowboys get the first first down of the night,
- 13:03holding across the 30-yard line, first Newhouse and then Dorsett, and that tackle was made by Doug Nettles the cornerback,
- 13:11and a good tackle it was, the Cowboys will go from their own 31-yard line, as they try to take it to them early,
- 13:17they have John Fitzgerald at the center spot with Scott and Lawless at the guard,
- 13:22Donovan and Frederick at the tackle positions, Dupree at the tight end along with Jay Salde,
- 13:29Tony Hill is to the left and Drew Pearson is flanked to the right, it's first down from the 31,
- 13:34and Dorsett gets only about the yard as he was hit in a hurry by Joe Ehrman, who by the way overcame a broken hand during the preseason play
- 13:42to get back in the lineup for the Colts.
- 13:44You know the great thing about Tony Dorsett, he is an exceptionally good runner from the I-formation,
- 13:49and the great thing about the I-formation is the fact that a back with his quickness and speed can start at one side of the line of scrimmage
- 13:56and wind up over on the other side because it's a formation where he can see very well and his shoulders are always squared
- 14:01to the line of scrimmage and he can change directions extremely well.
- 14:04The Cowboys shift into the pro set and now they go to a wing formation and on second down to nine,
- 14:10Stubbock will throw for the first time.
- 14:12From the pocket he throws it short and complete across the 36.
- 14:15A flag is down as Dorsett caught the ball thrown by Stubbock and Stan White,
- 14:20the linebacker from Ohio State made the tackle and the officials talk it over.
- 14:25That kind of a play is an option play with a left half back running inside or outside on the linebacker.
- 14:31In this case it was Stan White, he made the inside move and of course made the catch but there's a penalty on the play.
- 14:37And the penalty is against the Colts, moving the ball out to the 37.
- 14:41Inhealable shot defense, first down.
- 14:47Penalty against the Baltimore Colts.
- 14:49And a first down, the second of the night for the Cowboys now at their 37 yard line.
- 14:57Gerson and Hill both go to the same side for the first time this evening
- 15:01and Dupree the tight end will split out as the officials call time to get the sideline markers squared away.
- 15:0710.57 left in the first quarter, no score.
- 15:10You know Tom Landry indicated during the course of the week that he was a little concerned about the running game.
- 15:15He didn't feel that they ran well enough in preseason and he was concerned about it.
- 15:19He felt that the passing was farther along than a running but they're running good tonight so far.
- 15:23Hill and Dupree are, Hill and Gerson are both to the left with Dupree on the tight end position.
- 15:30And they go into the wing T formation, the Cowboys shift and on first down, the inside hand off the new house
- 15:36and he gets only a couple of these Colts that's tough to run against and it was John Dutton, the defensive end who got to them first.
- 15:42This broadcast is presented by the authority of the Dallas Cowboys in the National Football League.
- 15:47It is intended for the private use of our audience.
- 15:50Any rebroadcast or the use of this broadcast without the express written consent of the National Football League is prohibited.
- 15:56Second to nine for the Cowboys from their own 38.
- 16:00They go from our left to our right with 10.5 left in the first quarter, no score.
- 16:05And they use the full house backfield, shipped into a high formation and with a man in motion they had Stubbock back to throw his right.
- 16:14He throws and it is picked off.
- 16:16It is intercepted at the 45 yard line by the cornerback Norm Thompson and he is tackled at the 40 yard line of Dallas and the Cowboys and other turnover.
- 16:25First to fumbles, now an interceptionist, Pat Gutterbott, made the tackle on Norm Thompson who picked it off and Stubbock was back on his heels when he threw it.
- 16:34Yes, he threw the ball off balance or something that you don't see him do very well.
- 16:37He just threw the ball up for grad.
- 16:38Joe Erman put a lot of pressure on him from the inside, number 76, and Mike Barnes also was in on the play number 63 that provided the pressure to make him throw the ball when he really didn't want to.
- 16:50Oh, the ball, is that the Dallas 40 yard line?
- 16:53First time the Colts had it, they had it at the 25 yard line of Dallas and now they have it at the Dallas 40 and they have the rookie quarterback Mike Kirkland in there.
- 17:02What a night this must be for him, Hank.
- 17:04Oh, it's a great opportunity but of course Mike has been a big league performer, played at the University of Arkansas, he's been involved in a lot of pressure situations and I think he's going to respond very well tonight.
- 17:14It's going to be interesting to see what they do on this first down position.
- 17:17They were very conservative in the first opportunity, they ran the ball three times and then kicked the field goal and missed.
- 17:23I wouldn't be a bit surprised to see them open up here with a play action pass and try to get a big play and get the ball down the field and try to get a lead in this game.
- 17:30Did you know that Mike Kirkland is the first fun pass and kick champion to ever make it to the National Football League?
- 17:37He was a champion at age 13 in area.
- 17:39No, I didn't know that.
- 17:41And let's see what he can do. He's getting plenty of advice down there from Bert Jones wearing a shoulder harness, sees in civvies and on the sideline along with Bill Truefile whom I understand could play tonight if he had to.
- 17:53Yes, they indicated that he might be able to play.
- 17:55He's got very much the same kind of an injury as Bert Jones. It's not quite as severe but in the event that he had to play they could press him into action and I can think he could perform admirably.
- 18:04And if they all go down including Mike Kirkland, well then Don McCauley would take over the quarterbacking chores.
- 18:09It's the first down for the Colts at the 40 yard line of the Cowboys.
- 18:12Roger Carr comes to the left with Glenn Dowdy flanked to the right.
- 18:16And on first down, Kirkland with Leeks in the backfield, hands to the full back. He drives for three and a little bit more as he goes over the left side and Bob Bruning, the middle linebacker, got him.
- 18:28Ken Mendenhall is the center for the Colts with Robert Cratt and Ken Huff playing the guard.
- 18:33Wade Griffin at the left tackle and George Cones at the right tackle and Wadah Chor, Wade Griffin is tonight.
- 18:39You know, as interesting a note on that play, Dede Lewis went over the split in, Roger Carr number 81, they too must have anticipated the fact that he might throw a play action pass or a pass on first down.
- 18:48Doddy and Carr are both to the left side on second down and seven. Here's the gift to McCauley and Leeks couldn't get out of his way.
- 18:55And he has stopped right at the line of spin. Harvey Martin covered him as Roosevelt Leeks failed to clear out and McCauley ran up his back.
- 19:03It'll be third down and seven for the Colts who haven't thrown the ball yet.
- 19:06We have 9-20 remaining in the first quarter. There is no score.
- 19:12Earlier Tony Linnhart missed a 27 yard field goal attempt for the Colts. Bill Goose eggs on the scoreboard.
- 19:19Leeks is out and Marshall Johnson, a third year man from Houston, is into the game now and they are using free wide receivers.
- 19:28And the first pass from Kirkland over the middle and over Throne and in complete.
- 19:33It was intended for Marshall Johnson. He was covered by Benny Barnes coming off the corner and it's fourth down.
- 19:41And it is going to be, are they going to punt it or try another field goal? Looks like a punning situation for David Leeks.
- 19:49It's going to be a very depressing thing for a team like Baltimore to have the opportunity.
- 19:54I'm sure they win another game thinking, well we've got to get a good break and get good field position.
- 19:58They've had it twice and couldn't capitalize on the opportunity that was presented. This has got to be demoralizing.
- 20:03And they've got to really hang in their tough and not get their rubber down if they hope to do a good job offensively the rest of the way.
- 20:10David Leeks stands at midfield but Johnson is the single safety. Leeks will probably try to kick it out of bounds.
- 20:16Cowboys show a nine man, ten man rush. There's the snap. Well handled. Leeks angles it for the sideline.
- 20:22It's high in the air. A fair catch is called for. It bounces into the end zone, out of the end zone and the Cowboys will take over for the second time tonight on their own 20 yard line.
- 20:32847 remaining in the first period and the Cowboys get the ball back at their own 20.
- 20:39How would you think so far in addition to the demoralizing aspects for Baltimore, Hank?
- 20:45We'll ask you that question when we come back. A timeout on the field with a score. Baltimore nothing in Dallas.
- 20:51Capital Land. That's where world renowned Pirelli tires are now on sale at Capital Land Tire Mart in Latham on Group 9 just south of the Latham Circle.
- 21:03Capital Land Tire Mart is glad to play a part in bringing you CBS's National Football League schedule right from the start.
- 21:09Their tire sales and service mark ground opening isn't until Thursday, September 14th, but they're open right now and selling and mounting tires, wheel of lining and performing all the tire specialty services that they think they're the very best.
- 21:20If you come into Capital Land Tire Mart tomorrow or any day before the ground opening, they'll give you all that they're promising during the ground opening, specials such as lube oil and filter for only 788 including five quarts of oil.
- 21:32So come on in now.
- 21:33Capital Land Tire Mart. That's where on Group 9 next to McDonald's just south of the Latham Circle.
- 21:46Capital Land Tire Mart for the most concerned customer tire service you've ever known.
- 21:53Cowboys ball, they show the same offensive unit. First and 10 at their own 20 yard line going from our left to our right and they send Drew Pearson to the left side.
- 22:02Split Billy Joe DePree. Now he's in tight at the tight end position. Tony Hill is in motion. He sets up on a wing and Stalbock at quarterback gives to Newhouse.
- 22:11He has slowed down and tackled for a one yard loss. First thing through first of all was Mike Barnes who was the defensive lineman of the year last year in the NFL.
- 22:21He got good penetration on that play and evidently the Cowboys are concerned about the quickness and the recovery speed of the Baltimore Coast.
- 22:29They've run a lot of counter plays so far in this game and that was a counter play there that didn't succeed because of the aggressive play of Mike Barnes number 63.
- 22:38Tom Landry continues to call a place for the Cowboys alternating his guard, Graffity and Lawless here second and 11 and Dorsett gets back to the original line of scrimmage and only two yards more before Mike Barnes tackled him again.
- 22:51On the previous play, Mark Barnes slowed him down and Joe Ehrman combined to make the tackle and this time it was Barnes once more and third down and long, third and eight for the Cowboys from their own 22.
- 23:03Now, the Cowboys are out and into the backfield now is Preston Pearson. So we have Drew Pearson and Preston Pearson both in the lineup.
- 23:12Hill to the left, Preston Pearson to the right on third and eight for the Cowboys from their own 22 and they get into the shotgun formation with the double wing and back to throw a stop block.
- 23:24He has a lot of time and dumps it off for the first down to Preston Pearson at the 35 to the 40 to the 42 yard line and Pearson was all by himself and the Cowboys get their second first down of the night and Darrell Lewis, the linebacker finally caught up with it.
- 23:41Great illustration of great boys on the part of Roger Stabot. He was trying to hit the crossing pattern with his tight end coming across. He was covered, didn't see him and as a result he dumped the ball off to Preston Pearson who last year incidentally caught 46 passes for 535 yards.
- 24:00Now the two tight ends, Billy Joe Dupree and Jay Salty are both in there out of the I formation first down from their own 42 back into a post set and here is the give the new house over the right side tackle.
- 24:11He got only about a yard as he was tripped up right at the line of scrimmage Darrell Lewis, the linebacker cracked in and Fred Cook, the defensive end wouldn't give ground.
- 24:20The second to nine for Dallas from their own 43 and Tony Hill comes back in and Jay Salty goes out and Dallas continues to try to confuse the defensive unit.
- 24:30They use a lot of variety offensively as you know, man in motion, they create formation, they double shift and they try to create a moment of indecision and they do a good job of it because they make people move around and jump around a lot a lot.
- 24:42Tony Hill is back in there the tail back door set goes over the right side gets a little bit down to the 46 drive line of Baltimore for another first down door set,
- 24:52sliding over the right side using his blocking very well stopped by Thompson and Blackwood, but didn't he use that interference?
- 24:59Yes, he did and Tom Rafferty did a good job along with Andrew Frederick and Tony Hill did a good job of blocking on the cornerback and provided Tony door set with the opportunity to pick up that nice game in the first down.
- 25:11Well, that was a big burst for door set down to the Baltimore 41 and the first time that the Cowboys have been into enemy territory.
- 25:19Dupree sets up on the left side and both Pearson and Hill are to the right now for the Cowboys.
- 25:27First down at the 41 yard line, motion by Pearson and back to throwing first down Stubbock.
- 25:33They short those long, Hill cannot get there incomplete overthrown out of bounds and Stubbock saw the danger there threw it away and he was jacked when he unloaded.
- 25:43Norm Thompson was the primary coverage man.
- 25:47That was a bootleg. The backs went to Rogers left and of course Roger went to the right.
- 25:53He tried to hit Tony Hill on an up and outside move and then an up move, but he was covered very well and of course Roger very wisely threw it over the top so it wouldn't be an intersection.
- 26:04And Fred Cook got a whack in at Stubbock who ended up on the deck at second down and 10.
- 26:10This is when Tom Landry shows a lot of imagination. You think he's committed to a passing series and he'll come up with something else like the draw for example.
- 26:18They're into the process and on second down and 10 Stubbock is back to throw rush hit throws the screen incomplete.
- 26:27He wanted to get at the new house but the pressure from Cook was too much and Stubbock had to get rid of it. It'll be third down in 10.
- 26:36That was incredible. He was full speed.
- 26:38He really was. He looked like he was in the starting block and ready to come off the ball before the ball was snapped.
- 26:48Andy Frederick tried to cut him and he missed him. He went right over the top of it.
- 26:53Well they try to cut him too low and that's what happens if you try to throw too low on that defensive end especially as agile as Cook is.
- 26:59He'll jump right over the top and still get to the quarterback.
- 27:02Preston Pearson is back in there as Robert Newhouse is out of the lineup into the shotgun on third and 10 from the Baltimore 41 Stubbock back to throw looks and throws over the middle and it is caught.
- 27:14And it is going to be a first down inside the 30.
- 27:18Now let's see a whistle brings it back. A whistle brings it back but it still will be a first down at the Baltimore 31 yard line.
- 27:27Let's check out what the officials saw to cause the play to be there. Ray Oldham was in there and got a hand on the receiver who was Preston Pearson once again.
- 27:38At that time they had five backs in the game number 25 Ray Oldham was covering man for man on Tony on Preston Pearson.
- 27:46He just went right down, drove him back, cut to the outside.
- 27:48The ball was right on the numbers of beautifully thrown ball by Roger Stubbock but that's a great illustration.
- 27:53They had three receivers on the left side of the ball and two on the right side, a triple double wing formation which was very effective.
- 28:00Now they do not give the Cowboys the forward progress that they thought they had and it's going to be fourth down and about a foot.
- 28:07It looks like they're going to go for the first down attempt.
- 28:10Ray Oldham kicked the receiver, Preston Pearson in the back inadvertently but any touching when the man is down means that the play is dead.
- 28:19So they're going to go for it with Newhouse and Dorsett and the two tight ends in there.
- 28:23The Cowboys need less than a yard from the 36 of Baltimore.
- 28:27First down, a flag is down, Newhouse gets to the 30.
- 28:30That'll be a first down unless the infraction was against the Cowboys and I do not believe it was.
- 28:36No, I don't think it was. I think it was against the Baltimore Colts.
- 28:40Roger evidently changed the rhythm of the count or changed the inflection in his voice and it made them jump and of course they got a cheap first down.
- 28:48And now it's first in 10 on the 30.
- 28:50Finally, he's going to be the first down.
- 28:53Oh, it's by this. We'll be taken to the 30 yard line of the Colts.
- 28:57And the Cowboys, though, are suffering a little bit or on the move.
- 29:00Five and a half left in the first quarter, no score.
- 29:03Wouldn't be a bit surprised to see him throw some kind of a play action pass on his first down in this particular area of the field.
- 29:11Michael and Pearson are both to the left side. Now he'll come to motion back to the right. I formation to give the door set.
- 29:18He's trying to get outside. He is in trouble.
- 29:20Cut it back, gains a couple of yards and made a pretty good run out of it.
- 29:24Brought down by Fred Cook who came from the other side of the field.
- 29:27That was another counterplay at this time from the I formation and the defensive unit of the Baltimore Colts played it extremely well.
- 29:36Door set, made it on his own, got down to the 27 yard line of the Colts.
- 29:41Where it'll be second down and seventh with five minutes left in the quarter.
- 29:45Sanders-Shiver is in. Darryl Loose out at the left linebacker spot for the Colts who show the normal 4-3 defense.
- 29:56They're showing actually a six man front, but then the linebackers drop off on second down and sixth.
- 30:03Stubbock gives the ball to door set and an end around to Tony Hill. He throws the ball and it is incomplete in the end zone.
- 30:12Incomplete.
- 30:13Karn near a Dallas touchdown.
- 30:15As Belly Joe DePree went diving for it down there, Drew Pearson right at the end line almost caught that ball.
- 30:22Laird and Nuttles were both covering and Dallas almost made the pass play from the flanker position fail.
- 30:31Yes, they use a lot of gimmick plays and I, that's why I alluded to that a minute ago.
- 30:34I thought maybe they would do something like that on first down, but they like reverses. They like screens. They like quick screens.
- 30:40A lot of people on their football team can throw the option fast.
- 30:43It was an illustration of Tony Hill throwing it and they almost got away with the touchdown.
- 30:48Preston Pearson is back in the lineup for the Cowboys.
- 30:51They're going to the shotgun formation on third down and sixth from the 26.
- 30:55I'll call them all stop back to throw looks and throws and it is caught for a first down at the 11 yard line.
- 31:04A brilliant catch by Drew Pearson who was undressed by Norm Thompson, but held the ball and Drew Pearson is not going to get up right away.
- 31:14We're coming down for 16.
- 31:17And the first quarter Pearson is up on his feet. He's okay. And there is the timeout.
- 31:27And with the timeout and the score, Dallas nothing, Baltimore nothing. Let's take this moment.
- 31:34They called the comet Lucifer's hammer. At first the chances that it would hit Earth head on were one in a million.
- 31:41Then one in a thousand, then one in a hundred and then three.
- 31:47It was the end of civilization as we know it and a terrifying beginning for the men and women who survived.
- 31:53Lucifer's hammer, a novel by Larry Mithin and Jerry Pornell.
- 31:57And now in paperback from Fawcett, Lucifer's hammer. It's hitting your bookstore now.
- 32:04Thanks for having Jack Buck with you from Dallas. The Cowboys had a first down at the 15 yard line of the Baltimore coast.
- 32:14Dorset carried down to the 12 and it's second down and seven coming up.
- 32:19Hill goes to the left. Drew Pearson to the right. Two tight ends are in there. Dupree and Salty.
- 32:26Now Butch Johnson is a wide receiver. Here's a good new house on a slant inside the 10 drive.
- 32:31He has close to a first down. It is the first down for the Cowboys.
- 32:36It'll be first and goal to go, Mr. Strand.
- 32:39They had a double tight, a double wing formation with only one back in the backfield.
- 32:44Bobby Newhouse, number 44. There ran an off tackle play to the left with Herbert Scott pulling on the defensive linebacker, Stan White.
- 32:53The tight end did a good job of blocking down. They had a good cavity and as a result,
- 32:57they had a down to the five yard line of big play and a good game.
- 33:01Cowboys started from their own 20 yard line after David Lee booted it into the end zone.
- 33:05They've gone 75. It's first and goal at the five yard line.
- 33:09It's Dorset and Newhouse in the backfield. Again, the two tight ends as the Cowboys try to get the first score of the night.
- 33:16Stalbock takes it, hands it off to Dorset. He goes deep to get away from one tackle, two tackles, but not the third.
- 33:22And he loses on the play back to the ten yard line and it'll be second and goal from the ten.
- 33:27Wow, Blackwood wouldn't turn a loose.
- 33:29That play was designed initially to go inside, kind of an off tackle play, but it was plugged.
- 33:35So Tony Dorset ran outside and of course wasn't able to break the turn.
- 33:40Number 44, Blackwood made the play.
- 33:45Newhouse and Dorset are the setbacks.
- 33:48We have 145 remaining in the first quarter, no score.
- 33:52Hill goes to the left, Drew Pearson to the right side.
- 33:58Two tight ends, Salty and Dupree.
- 34:01Stalbock back to the throw.
- 34:04Jumps and throws the screen. It's caught by Newhouse. He is back to the five, to the four.
- 34:09Through the one yard line and cover there.
- 34:11It'll be third and goal from the one and Newhouse showing tremendous talent.
- 34:16He's made an excellent play on the screen.
- 34:21He's built very low to the ground, as you know, and terrific balance.
- 34:25And he got that strictly on his own because they got a shot at him.
- 34:29It was Laird who tripped him up, I think, and then he was covered by Simonini, the middle linebacker.
- 34:34Yes, but Bruce Laird made the tackle. Number 40.
- 34:39Oh, it's third and goal from the one.
- 34:42Shotted out first and goal from the five. Newhouse and Dorset in the backfield.
- 34:48Stalbock on third down.
- 34:51Takes a snap and keeps the ball and throws, and it is incomplete as the Wurthy receiver stumbles and fell in the end zone.
- 34:58And are the Cowboys going to try? Gamble on fourth down or go for three?
- 35:03Jay Salty would have been all along in the end zone, but he tripped and fell, and no one was there for Stalbock.
- 35:09He looked like he ran right out of the bleachers, the play-action pass.
- 35:12This is something that they do an awful lot in this situation, and it's surprising that Bollemore was caught so surprised because he was wide open.
- 35:20And fortunately for the Bollemore Colts, he stumbled and fell because he was wide open.
- 35:25With Charlie Waters holding, Raphael, 70 in, played nice here for the Rams, tries to get his first Dallas point.
- 35:31He'll kick it from the nine yard line.
- 35:35The snap is good, the set is good, the kick is good. No good!
- 35:3970 in misses. They call it a chip shot. It's never easy, but he missed from nine yards away.
- 35:46A pause in the action, and let's take time out.
- 35:51Here's Barzman and McCormick for Quantel Business Computers.
- 35:55Well, today we're talking with another captain of industry. Sir, could you tell us about your company?
- 36:00Yes, I have a company where I braid people's legs and I manufacture merry-go-round horse eyes. It's a conglomerate.
- 36:06Oh, sounds complex. Tell me, how do you control this conglomerate?
- 36:09Very simple. I use a Quantel Business Computer.
- 36:12Oh, you're a computer expert too.
- 36:14Are you kidding? I don't know a thing about computers. I used to think that software was a programmer's long job.
- 36:19Yes, then why a Quantel Business Computer?
- 36:22Because it speaks my language.
- 36:24Oh, what language is that?
- 36:25English, my friend, English.
- 36:26Oh, you mean like how now, Brown Cow?
- 36:28That's the idea. And with Quantel's plain English programming, I didn't have to hire some white-coated wizard to help me run my business.
- 36:36Uh-huh.
- 36:37And with the money I saved, I was able to acquire another company for my conglomerate.
- 36:40Oh, what company was that?
- 36:41A chain of coin-operated marriage shappals.
- 36:44For Quantel information, call toll-free 800-227-1894. In California, call 415-783-3410. Collect.
- 36:5636 seconds remaining in the first quarter here and no score. What about step-in on that last kick, Hank?
- 37:04We drafted him number 10 when I was in New Orleans two years ago.
- 37:08He's got a great leg, but he has a tendency to try to kick easy in the scoring area.
- 37:13Instead of attacking the ball, he kind of tries to chip it. That was a good illustration of it.
- 37:18He tried to pop it up and he brought his head up a little bit too soon as a result of Mr. Kick.
- 37:23Dallas went 79 yards, kept the ball for more than eight minutes, but came up short.
- 37:28And now Mike Kirkman, a quarterback, gives to his running back.
- 37:31Roosevelt leaps the full back off the right side and he got one and Bob Bruning stopped him there.
- 37:36They're giving forward progress out to the 22-yard line.
- 37:39And incredibly, it would appear we're going to have a scoreless first quarter here in Dallas with the Cowboys having gone in as a top heavy favorite in this game.
- 37:49But they've made two turnovers and they've missed a field goal.
- 37:52And that could help the Baltimore Colts an awful lot because I'm sure they felt badly about the fact they blew two scoring opportunities themselves.
- 37:59Now they have possession of score still 0-0.
- 38:01Doughty is to the left, Roger Carr is flanked right, and here is a give to the second man through, and that's the tail back down McCauley.
- 38:08He ran into a stone wall, got out near the 24-yard line. It'll be second down and sixth for Baltimore there.
- 38:14The gun sounds, the end of the first quarter with a score of Baltimore nothing, and Dallas nothing.
- 38:19Somehow you fought the temptation to buy a new Buick Century until now because you figured that along about this time your Buick dealer just might be as anxious to talk to you as you are to get a Century.
- 38:32Well you shrewd rascal, you were right. Which means you and that Century can get together now with a deal that may surprise you.
- 38:39Buick Century, yes you can, at your Buick dealer.
- 38:43Yes you can, yes you can.
- 38:55Interesting thing Jack, Drew Pearson has caught 46 straight games, caught passes in 46 straight games, and that surpasses his own record.
- 39:07What a great accomplishment for this great receiver, Drew Pearson. He paid for the one he caught tonight, didn't he? Yes he did.
- 39:13He certainly did, but he bounced right back up, he came right back into the ball game, but he's tough and he makes, catches inside, outside, going away, and that's what makes him such a premier receiver in the National Football League.
- 39:23This game started with Butch Johnson fumbling the opening kickoff, was covered by McCall, Reese McCall, the rookie of Baltimore.
- 39:32McCall couldn't move it, Lenhard missed the 27 yard field goal attempt, and there was an interception by Norm Thompson with 10 minutes left in the quarter, that stopped the Dallas drive.
- 39:43Then Dallas went 79 yards, kept the ball for 8 minutes and 11 seconds, and Raphael kept the end missed a 9 yard field goal, hence were scoreless, going into the second quarter.
- 39:57Interesting thing, time possession wise, Jack, Dallas has had it for 11 minutes and 51 seconds, Baltimore 3 and 9 seconds, and the score is still remarkable, just a remarkable stat, 0-0.
- 40:10Roosevelt leaps goes out, and Marshall Johnson is the other running back with Don McCauley now for the Colts. On third down and seventh, and here is a gift to McCauley, he almost broke the play, but he was tackled and got only to the 25, and David Lee will have to kick it again.
- 40:26Kyle came up from the corner, he was so sure that Kirkland wasn't going to throw the ball, he stuck his nose in the backfield and made the defense.
- 40:33Yes, they come up a lot more aggressively because they know that the Baltimore Colts team seemingly is going to play it very close to the vest, very conservative, and Baltimore so far is 0-3 on third down confersions.
- 40:47He stands at the 10, he'll kick it from about the 15, and Butch Johnson is the single safety inside his 35 yard line. We're at Texas Stadium in Dallas, CBS Radio, Ankstram and Jack Buck, scoreless here in the second quarter, and a whistle stops play, and that is too much time against Baltimore, and that will send David Lee back to his 5 yard line to wait for the snap.
- 41:10That'll make it fourth down at about 12.
- 41:13And the thing, Dallas jumps around an awful lot on punting situations, they want to create problems as far as blocking responsibilities are concerned.
- 41:21Evidently they created a problem that time, and too much delay, and they get a 5 yard penalty.
- 41:25The layup game costs the Colts 5. So David Lee stands at his 5, he'll kick it away from the 10, Butch Johnson moves up to his 40.
- 41:35He'll kick the snap, not much pressure. Lee's kick is pretty good, and it's going to be taken by Johnson at the sideline, goes down the sideline, 45 midfield, down to the 45 yard line of Baltimore, before Robert Pratt got to him and stopped him there.
- 41:50The Cowboys take over on the Baltimore, 45 yard line, first and 10.
- 41:55That kind of a play is very deceptive, because a lot of the time when you're that close to the sideline, they think possibly that you're going to let it go out of bounds, and maybe you are out of bounds, and they kind of relax a little bit.
- 42:05And as a result, Butch Johnson was able to bring the ball back in good shape. The hang time for that kick that time was 4 seconds.
- 42:13With the ball at the Baltimore, 45 yard line, Drew Pearson goes to the right, and Tony Hill splits left in the I formation stop-on, gets to the tailback, Dorsett over the right side for 5, over for 9.
- 42:26He got a 10 yard, and very close to a first now. Dorsett with his best first of the night, Darryl Luce, and Bruce Blair came up and got him.
- 42:34The great thing about the I formation, as I mentioned earlier, that play was designed to go to the left, but it was plugged up there. He saw some running room to the right side, scampered off to the cavity to the right side, and made at least 9 yards, and possibly 10 and up for a first now.
- 42:49We'll wait for the measurement.
- 42:50A measure, and the Cowboys are an inch short. Second down and one, this is a beautiful gambling down, Mr. Stram.
- 42:57Yes it is, and of course the Baltimore coast know that too, so it's going to be interesting to see what they'll do and how they'll respond, and whether Roger Stabach will try something big on this waist down of second and one.
- 43:10We're early in the second quarter, 1350 remaining in the half. From the Baltimore 35, it's second down and two tight ends in there again for the Cowboys.
- 43:21Stabach has it, gives it new house first down, and if he squirts to the 37 yard line of the coast.
- 43:30Well the Cowboys, played it straight, got the first down, Joe Ehrman made the tackle.
- 43:36An off tackle, a basic simple vanilla play off tackle with the right guard Burton Lullis pulling to the right. It was supposed to be off tackle, off the block of the tight end, but there was running room inside.
- 43:47He took advantage of it, ran inside and got the necessary yardage for the first down.
- 43:51The two tight ends stay in there, do free and saldy for the Cowboys, and that presents problems for the safety men of the coast.
- 43:57Yes it does, and here again with double tight, you expect him to run, he might throw some kind of a play action pass in his first down.
- 44:05Here it is.
- 44:06Here is the play action pass, Stabach backs it through, and he throws over the middle, and it is off the fingertips of Pearson.
- 44:12Drew Pearson couldn't handle it, Bruce Laird was trying to stay with him, but Pearson had position, went up high, the ball went off his hands incomplete.
- 44:20And he got some pressure on the inside from Joe Ehrman, but it was a good play that time, they tried to create the impression they were going to try to stick the ball in from that double tight end formation, but threw a play action pass on first down, it would have been a good completion, he just didn't catch it.
- 44:37And the pass was just a bit overthrown, thrown high at second down and ten from the Baltimore 32.
- 44:45Tony Hill is back in there, as saldy is out.
- 44:48Drew Pearson comes left with Hill to the right, second down and ten, do free the tight end, Stabach straight backs, and a screen pass caught by Newhouse, tackled for a loss on the play.
- 45:01Carol Luce, the linebacker, stayed right with him and did not miss, he got the help he needed from Joe Ehrman.
- 45:08Boy did he respond greatly on that play, it was a quick screen, and Luce, number 58, read it all the way, came up on the run, made a perfect tackle, and no gain on the play.
- 45:23And the ball game comes Lloyd Mumpert, the ten year veteran, he is the extra defensive back for Baltimore, on third down and 12 from the Baltimore 35.
- 45:32Ed Simonini is out, shipped into the shotgun, Stabach stands at his 40 yard line and waits for the snap, gets it dropped back to the ball, again pressure, he is hit, gets away, he throws and it is intercepted.
- 45:47The ball is at the 15 and dead there, and Norm Thompson gets his second of the night.
- 45:56The pressure was avoided by Stabach, and he stepped up into the pocket through it, and the pass was intercepted by Thompson, as Mumpert was flitzing out of the defensive secondary.
- 46:08Yes he was, number 42 was flitzing on the play, I don't think they anticipated it, they didn't pick it up, and as a result he made him throw the ball before he was ready, and of course it was an interception.
- 46:16Well minutes left in the half, with a score, Dallas nothing, Baltimore nothing, let's take time out.
- 46:23Ruth, the most significant event in television history, returns to ABC.
- 46:29Share with your whole family the story of Concatente, Tizzy, Chicken George and his son Tom, experience again the love, hope, courage and humanity that kept the dream alive for four generations.
- 46:41From Africa to the trials of slavery to the final victory, freedom, relive the triumph of an American family.
- 46:49Ruth, starting tomorrow for five nights on ABC.
- 46:59We have 12-01 remaining in the half, and we just witnessed the third Dallas turnover of the evening, two interceptions and a fumble.
- 47:08I'm corrected earlier, I was talking about a miss by Tony Linnard on a field goal attempt, it was 37 yards, not 27, and then the field goal miss by 17 was of 19 yards, and now the Colts get it at their own 15, first down.
- 47:21Another interesting stat, Baltimore is without a first down so far in the contest.
- 47:27Mike Kirkman at the quarterback spot, and as Marshall Johnson in the backfield with him, along with McAuley, when Doughty goes in motion here, the pitch to McAuley couldn't get the block in time.
- 47:37Well, there was nothing there for him.
- 47:41Couldn't clear out of the line, whoever had the pull and get out in front of him just wasn't there.
- 47:46No, it looked like they put up a fence as he tried to get outside, and interesting enough, there was a first time in this game that Baltimore has tried to run anything other than something inside between the tackles.
- 47:56They tried to get outside, but they didn't succeed in getting any kind of a sizable game.
- 48:00Well, remind you that the Colts are playing without Bert Jones, Bill Troup is available, but Mike Kirkland is the quarterback and has been all evening.
- 48:08When Doughty planks to the right, Roger Carr splits left, and on second down and nine, the Cowboys show the Blitz play it straight, Roosevelt Leakes gets on a yard or two over the left side, just for a few, got two.
- 48:20They're playing a little stunting game as Pugh came from the left side to the right, and he wrapped up Roosevelt Leakes.
- 48:26The other interesting thing, they were in the flex that time, and the defensive end, Harvey Martin, number 79, was off the line of scrimmage, and this is where they like to run, they like to get a good push with their left tackle, Wade Griffin on Harvey Martin, but they didn't do it that time, and of course, it didn't make any kind of yardage.
- 48:43Balls at the 18 yard line of the Colts, Randy Hughes and Mark Washington are both in there as extra defensive backs.
- 48:49Kirkland on third down and seven is back to throw, looks to the right, a scrim pass, and it's gonna go for a first down.
- 48:57Macaulay caught it, a flag is down, so is Macaulay across the 30 yard line.
- 49:01Charlie Waters made the tackle, and evidently there was some kind of an infraction back in the backfield, and it's going to be against Baltimore.
- 49:12That's gonna nullify their first, first down of the night.
- 49:15Yes, that was a quick screen to the right side, and Tom Henderson evidently was penalized, was blocked improperly on the play, and he brought it to the attention of the official, however he saw it anyhow, and there's a penalty on the play.
- 49:27And we'll pick up the call from the referee, Jim Tunney, after he sets the ball and marks off the yardage against Baltimore.
- 49:34We'll put the ball back at the nine yard line of the Colts.
- 49:39Illegal use of the hands, offense number 75 during the run, half the distance is a goal line, third down still.
- 49:47George Coons of the Baltimore Colts was caught holding back there as he was pass blocking on the spray in which went but then was nullified, and so it is third down and 15 from the Baltimore 10.
- 50:01Hughes and Washington stay in there as extra defensive backs.
- 50:05Marshall Johnson's in the backfield for Baltimore.
- 50:09Ian Don McCauley, the give to McCauley over the left side, gets across the 15 to the 20, not enough for a first down.
- 50:15Tackle at the 21, like Cliff Harris, and the Colts will have to kick it away.
- 50:19Another punch coming up by David Lee.
- 50:2310-21 remaining in the first half.
- 50:27And Butch Johnson will be back to try to handle this pump. He stands on his 40.
- 50:32They're leaving busy this evening. Yes, he has. They're doing a lot of work on their specialty teams tonight, especially their punting game, but they're still in this game.
- 50:41Randy Hughes almost got to the pot. It's kicked away to put Johnson. He's corralled at the 45 but slides forward near midfield before he was tackled by Tim Baylor, a defensive back who got down there to put the final stop on the play.
- 50:54Randy Hughes came within an inch of blocking the David Lee pun. 9.57 left in the half, a timeout on the field with a score.
- 51:03Dallas nothing, Baltimore nothing.

- 51:33College games, pro games. When it comes to football, sportscaster Ray Scott knows his business and so does his handy-dandy computer.
- 51:41Ray, with the help of his computer, figures out the upcoming games ahead of time and gives weekly predictions on not only who will win but what the scores will be.
- 51:49Pitch yourself against Ray and his computer. It's fun. Computer kickoff every Thursday, Friday and Saturday. It's on the air eight times each Thursday through Saturday on WROW.
- 51:59So keep listening. See if you can outguess the computer.
- 52:08He has a leg. He really has except that he hasn't disciplined himself well enough yet to be able to keep his head down and kick the big kicks.
- 52:15Balls in the midfield for the Dallas Cowboys. First and 10. They shift out of the eye into the pro set, back into the eye.
- 52:23The Colts shift on defense, motion by Drew Pearson. And Stompach back to throw on first down to the sideline and it is caught.
- 52:31Tony Hill, a boy from McRae, 35-30. 10-15, 10-5. He's back with the goal line.
- 52:39Kyle Blackwood caught up with Tony Hill. It'll be first and goal for the Cowboys on a stunning first down play and finally running by Tony Hill.
- 52:51That was a great play by Tony Hill and the thing that happened really was the fact that Doug Nettled, the right corner, played him so soft he's concerned about his deep speed that they threw in front of him and then he wasn't in a good position to make the tackle.
- 53:04He ran back to the inside of the field and now the ball's in a one yard line. But it was a great run, a great reception by Tony Hill, number 80.
- 53:11Doug Denison is in the backfield as they run with a full house backfield. Two tight ends and first and goal for the Cowboys and they give us the Denison. He's got a touchdown.
- 53:26The first goal of the night. One yard out for Doug Denison. Oh, the youngster, comparatively, was favored with a call and he held on to it and got in from one yard away.
- 53:45Now it's the Cowboys. First down the board, 6-0 with 8.57 remaining in the hand. Charlie Waters will hold it and Raphael Septian will try for the extra point.
- 53:57Ball will have to travel 20 yards to make it 7-0. Waters gets it down. This kick is good. It's 7-0 in favor of the Dallas Cowboys.
- 54:10The whitening struck that time. 50 yards and two plays. It took one minute. And with the score, Dallas 7, all the more nothing. Let's take time out.
- 54:19Buick has some good news for procrastinators. Even though you waited, you can still enjoy the comfort and luxury of a full-size Buick. Even better, your Buick dealer just might give you an irresistible deal on a 78 Le Sabre right now. But do hurry, because a lot of other procrastinators have been waiting for this kind of news too.
- 54:41Yes you can. Yes you can.
- 54:56Well here we go after that 7-point lead for the Dallas Cowboys. They're going to be kicking off here with Raphael Septian. And as I mentioned, he's got a very strong leg. He's capable of kicking the ball deep into the end zone. It'll be interesting to see what he does.
- 55:11He likes to kick on synthetic turf much, much better than he does on natural turf. He had a problem with that last year with the Los Angeles Rams, and I think that's why they kind of gave up on him. But I think that he feels much, much better and more comfortable on synthetic turf, which both kickers do.
- 55:26Septian will do the kicking Joe Washington makes an appearance for the Baltimore Colts. He's back with Marshall Johnson and Don McCauley. Three deep men in the vicinity of the five-yard line with the Cowboys on top, seven to nothing.
- 55:41Septian who wears number one trying to fill the shoes of Herrera for the Cowboys. You know he's made 20 commercials I think in Mexico and made a movie.
- 55:56He's a popular man. His side fashion kick goes down to the one-yard line. It's taken one yard deep by Marshall Johnson. He's out to the 20, the 25, the 30, the 35, the 40 midfield, inside the 45 yard line of the Dallas Cowboys. And Septian who kicked the ball made the tackle.
- 56:15Another illustration, you see, he made a great run, really a great run, but he had the ball in his right arm again, you see. And had he had it in the left arm away from pressure, he could have used it to ward off Septian and might have gone all the way.
- 56:27But it's a great illustration of how important it is for the young backs and young people to carry the ball away from pressure along the sideline.
- 56:34Marshall Johnson really did a job showing his speed. He's a third year man from Houston, 6'1", and 195 pounds. He flew down to the Dallas 44 yard line and the Colts have a chance to move the ball.
- 56:48Glenn Doughty is wide along with Roger Carr. McCauley and Leakes are in the backfield. Back to throw as Kirk Moneys passes incomplete. Tended for Doughty on a slanted pattern and he was covered by Benny Barnes on the corner.
- 57:03CBS Radio Sports brings you the excitement of the American League playoffs beginning Tuesday, October 3rd at 8.15 Eastern Time. And the National League playoffs beginning Wednesday, October 4th at 8.15 Eastern Time.
- 57:15So be sure to be listening here on most of these CBS stations.
- 57:19Dallas guests right on that last play. They double the outside receiver. Didi Lewis, Lewis went over to double cover. Roger Carr on the split inside. They rotated to the strong side. And I'm surprised they threw the ball into coverage.
- 57:31Doughty and Carr are the wide receivers once again. Mike Kirkman on second down has Doughty in motion. He tosses it to McCauley. McCauley gets a block, moves down to the 40, moves down to the 37 yard line.
- 57:43And it'll be third down and about four coming up. Bob Bruning made that tackle. Let's pause five seconds for stations to identify themselves on the CBS Radio Network.
- 57:55W-R-O-W all the way.
- 58:01Third and fourth for Baltimore. They've moved to the 37 yard line of the Cowboys and they have Marshall Johnson in there as the setback.
- 58:07Glenn Doughty, number 35, made a fine block above the waist on Tom Henderson and that's why that play was successful.
- 58:15And McCauley took it to the 37 yard line. Kirkman now has to move four yards trying to get the first first down of the night for the Cowboys. As McCauley is the lone setback, he's back to throw.
- 58:27Kirkman passes all over the head of the would-be receiver, Marshall Johnson. So it's fourth down for Baltimore and Kirkman has not been on target.
- 58:36You know, the only thing they've done so far, really, from a passing standpoint is try to throw the ball inside on Slantz. They haven't really tried to throw the ball outside at all.
- 58:45The defensive backs of the Dallas Cowboys are playing somewhat loose and we can look for, as we go along the game, maybe the possibility of throwing outside instead of just throwing inside, which is all they've done so far from a double-wing formation.
- 58:59And Mike Kirkman, the quarterback of the Colts, is one for four for one yard. Here's the punt by David Lee, angling for the sideline. He's got a pretty good chance of getting it. It's out of bounds at the two-yard line of the Dallas Cowboys.
- 59:13David Lee from Shreveport, Louisiana puts the Cowboys back to their own goal.
- 59:19You know, Jack Buck, it's interesting to know here that he's kicking, he's a right-footed kicker and he's kicking the ball to his left, which is very important to do because if you kick the ball to your left when you're a right-footed kicker and you squib the ball,
- 59:30it's sliding off the right side of your foot, it's going to go right down the middle and you still got a chance to make a big play.
- 59:35If you try to kick it to the right, you shank it, it's out of bounds after going about ten yards.
- 59:39Exactly right. So it's very intelligent for him to try to kick the ball to his left and he did a great job in that situation.
- 59:45If you kick the ball right outside the Dallas one-yard line, we'll call it the one, 740 left in the half, and the Cowboys have turned the ball over three times tonight.
- 59:53Canilla forward and a poor ball handling down here. Newhouse and Dorsett are in the backfield with Dorsett on a wing.
- 59:59They shift into a pro set. Stubbock is a quarterback. And on first down, he's back to throw. He throws it out to Dorsett. He's at the five. He is tackled at the ten-yard line.
- 1:00:10A play-action pass, very well-conceived play, taking inside and then throwing into the left flat a very high percentage play, the ball being thrown to Tony Dorsett.
- 1:00:21And the tackle was made by Duck Nettles, and that takes the Cowboys out to the point where they have some operating room from their ten-yard line.
- 1:00:28It is second down and one. And Pearson goes to the right. Tony Hill to the left.
- 1:00:34I wouldn't be a bit surprised to see him throw again on this second and one situation from this part of the field.
- 1:00:39Baltimore with that good rush of theirs. Here's a handoff and a loss on the play.
- 1:00:44And good defensive play by Mike Barnes once again. And he has distinguished himself tonight as he got in a wrapped-up Dorsett as soon as he got the ball.
- 1:00:52That defensive line of the Baltimore Colts is very impressive. John Dutton, Joe Orman, Mike Barnes and Fred Cook, they're big and they're strong, and they really make you earn every inch that you get.
- 1:01:04Incidentally, Roger Stabach is 7-13 for 102 yards. No touchdowns and two interceptions.
- 1:01:10Stan White is out of the lineup at that right linebacker spot, and Sanders Schubert is in there replacing him.
- 1:01:16For Baltimore, we'll learn more about the injury here as third down and four. And Stabach throws, and this one is caught at the 15.
- 1:01:24It is a first down. Dorsett breaks the tackle, breaks loose down the sideline, cuts it back at the 45. He's going to score a touchdown. He's to the 40. He's got a big escort.
- 1:01:34He gets outside to the sideline. He cruises into the end zone, and Dallas has their second score of the night. Dorsett this time.
- 1:01:47Boy, you talk about an incredible play. Stabach back to throw. See what happens. The ball is deflected by Simonini, number 56.
- 1:01:59Burry alert. There's a great illustration of the tipping drill. The ball was tipped, but he maintained concentration, followed it all the way.
- 1:02:06Even though it was tipped by Simonini, he was able to take possession and go all the way for the touchdown. And of course, he's a great athlete.
- 1:02:12At that kind of speed, he can gin any time he gets his hands on a football. The linebacker we had just mentioned,
- 1:02:18Sanders-Shiver, missed the tackle at about the 30-yard line, and after that it was goodbye.
- 1:02:23Except the end tries to make it 14-0. The ball is spotted by Waters. It is good, and it's 14-0. 6-0-5 remaining in the hand.
- 1:02:33A pause in the action with the score, Dallas 14. All of them are nothing, and let's take time out.
- 1:02:40The day is done. It's time to let it go. It's the moment to unwind.
- 1:02:51So just say, oh, but this day by day, and for the King of Beings, can settle back and please yourself.
- 1:03:02No matter what you do, no matter when or where, you know a glass of blood is like an easy chip when you say but why is it?
- 1:03:22Hey, but why is it? It's absolutely the best way to call it a day, and that's any day. You know what I mean?
- 1:03:32When you say but why is it? You said it all, and I was a bush, thank you.
- 1:03:43Tony Dorsett, the great performer from the University of Pittsburgh, illustrated his fantastic speed and overall athletic ability.
- 1:03:52That was a remarkable play, and he stretched the short game ready into a 91-yard touchdown reception.
- 1:03:58It was a song that's second-longest play in the history of the Dallas Cowboys.
- 1:04:02Well, it seems strange not to see Howard Stevens back there for Baltimore, but instead it's Joe Washington, Marshall Johnson, and Don McCauley waiting for the kickoff.
- 1:04:11And as the Colts trail about the score of 14-0, 6-0-5 left in the half.
- 1:04:16Septien pumps it, and this ball will be taken by McCauley on the 5.
- 1:04:20He's to the 10 going down the left side of the 15-20 to the 25-yard line and down short of the 30.
- 1:04:27Mike Kirkman and Copper will have a long way to go.
- 1:04:30The Dallas tackle was made by Jay Salty along with Guy Brown, tied in and linebacker, respectively.
- 1:04:37Interesting on kickoff returns, normally every team has three returns, a right, a middle, and a left return,
- 1:04:43and sometimes you might call for a right return, but if the ball is kicked to the left, you'd automatically bring it back on the left side.
- 1:04:49I thought that time the play was designed initially to go off the middle, but the ball was kicked to the left, and he ran it to the left very wisely.
- 1:04:56The ball is at the 29-yard line.
- 1:04:58Glenn Dowdy is to the right.
- 1:04:59Roger Carter to the left, first down for the Colts.
- 1:05:02Kirkman a quarter bank gives to McCauley over the left side, and he got only a couple.
- 1:05:07His forward progress might have given him three yards, but the Colts are very conservative at this point.
- 1:05:13Thanks, Grant.
- 1:05:14Yeah, they have to do something.
- 1:05:15They have to try to make something happen, being behind on the ball game by 14 points.
- 1:05:19Interesting stat which confirms what you just said, Jack.
- 1:05:23Dallas has 250 yards of total offense, Baltimore 34.
- 1:05:27And they're still looking for their first down, it's second down and seven from the Colts 32-yard line.
- 1:05:36Colts have won the last three AFC Eastern Division titles, starting off with quite a handicap, the absence of Bert Jones.
- 1:05:43Dowdy and Carter both to the left, and Kirkman is back to throw.
- 1:05:47He throws a screen, and it is incomplete, a perfectly timed tackle evidently by the linebacker Thomas Henderson.
- 1:05:54Although I thought he got there a little too quickly, Hank.
- 1:05:57No, I thought he made it a great play, Jack.
- 1:05:59He really did.
- 1:06:00He anticipated it and read it real well.
- 1:06:02It was close, but I thought he made a great play on that ball.
- 1:06:07Oh, the screen pass attempt is to no avail, and it's third down and seven for the Colts.
- 1:06:15Thomas Henderson overcame about with hepatitis during the summertime back in the lineup.
- 1:06:20Jeff Drowfew is out, Dave Stahl is in there, Randy Hughes and Mark Washington extra defensive backs for the Cowboys.
- 1:06:27When Dowdy goes right, Roger Carr splits left.
- 1:06:31They're tied in as Mac Austin.
- 1:06:35From the snap, Kirkman rolls left to avoid the pressure, runs with the ball, gets the first down to the 40, to the 45,
- 1:06:41and scoots out of bounds at the 46-yard line of Baltimore.
- 1:06:44They're first, first down of the night.
- 1:06:47Kirkman, you know, I didn't know whether he could run very well, and talking to Bert Jones before the game,
- 1:06:52he indicated that he was a great athlete, and he ran extremely well.
- 1:06:55There was an illustration of how well he did run.
- 1:06:58Actually, the back went one way.
- 1:07:01He was rolling out to his left with the anticipation of throwing a ball, it looked like, but everybody dropped off.
- 1:07:05They were concerned with coverage, and he ran the ball for the first down.
- 1:07:08The thing about putting those extra defensive backs in there, they all want that football, Hank,
- 1:07:12and they don't like to force the run.
- 1:07:14They want to sit back, lay back, and hope that somebody throws the ball into their arms.
- 1:07:18Yes, exactly right.
- 1:07:20The ball is at the ball of over 46.
- 1:07:22Car left, dowdy right, first down.
- 1:07:25Kirkman with leaks and McCauley in the backfield, and a whistle.
- 1:07:31Perhaps too much time, delay of game again.
- 1:07:34You know what it is, that'll make it first in 15, and that's another problem with the inexperienced quarterback.
- 1:07:39Well, I think they're trying to read the defense, and I think anytime they see a defensive tackle or defensive end
- 1:07:45playing loose off the ball, that time Harvey Martin was playing soft,
- 1:07:48and evidently he tried to change the play at the line of scrimmage, took too much time,
- 1:07:53and as a result, there was a penalty.
- 1:07:56The ball is back to the 41-yard line of the Colts, first in 15.
- 1:08:02Jim Tunney is the referee here tonight,
- 1:08:05and they haven't had any extreme problems in running this game.
- 1:08:10You know, I'm surprised that they haven't tried to throw the ball on first down more than they have.
- 1:08:14They've been very, very conservative, and they haven't done that at all.
- 1:08:17Well, they have a chance now on first in 15, and Kirkman dropped straight back, and he is smothered.
- 1:08:24Maybe that's why they haven't tried to throw the ball more.
- 1:08:27They were really run over by D.D. Lewis and Thomas Henderson.
- 1:08:31Both linebackers got through there.
- 1:08:33It was a blitz, and they just didn't pick him up, it's very obvious.
- 1:08:39But it's tough to throw against Dallas when they expect you to throw.
- 1:08:42You have to throw against them when they think possibly you're going to run, or pass, or screen,
- 1:08:47but when they know that you're going to throw the ball and anticipate it from a yardage standpoint, down a distance,
- 1:08:51they're going to flap those ears back and come after you, and boy, they make it tough.
- 1:08:55When they have Barnes and Kyle and Harrison Waters in there,
- 1:08:58they're going to pour a blitz a little bit more than some other clubs,
- 1:09:01and now the Cowboys put Randy Hughes and Mark Washington in his extra defensive backs,
- 1:09:06and Dave Stahls will try to apply pressure up front in the second down and 24,
- 1:09:11and here is the running play, and it moves across the 35-yard line,
- 1:09:16and Roosevelt Leakes was really upended at that point.
- 1:09:20He was hit hard by Harvey Martin and Cliff Harris.
- 1:09:23Didn't he get a shot there by Harvey Martin, number 79?
- 1:09:27Boy, he really crushed him.
- 1:09:29Now it is third down and 18 from the Baltimore 38.
- 1:09:34Kirkman's going to have to pull something out of the hat here with 4-0-5 remaining in the hat.
- 1:09:39Dallas leading Baltimore, 14-0-3.
- 1:09:43Thomas Henderson is a flanker.
- 1:09:46Carr and Dowdy are both wide.
- 1:09:48Better protection for Kirkman now, and he's tackled again for another loss on the plays.
- 1:09:53He couldn't clear the pocket and spot a receiver.
- 1:09:56Dave Stahls, who was just into the game, got two of them along with Larry Cole.
- 1:10:01And the defensive backs really did a good job of covering the receivers.
- 1:10:05There wasn't anybody open.
- 1:10:06He just didn't have a chance to throw the ball because everybody was covered,
- 1:10:09plus the fact that he got the leakage inside.
- 1:10:12Well, it's punting time again for David Lee, who's been the busiest person here tonight.
- 1:10:18And Butch Johnson stands back at his 25-yard line, waiting for this putt.
- 1:10:23The pressure by the Cowboys, Lee gets it away.
- 1:10:26It's a dandy kick with good hang time.
- 1:10:28Drives Johnson back to the 19.
- 1:10:30East to the 20, back to the 25, 26, and that's all.
- 1:10:34Baltimore with good coverage and a fine button.
- 1:10:39Michael Zdowski, who is a second-year man now from Virginia, was downfield to make the tackle.
- 1:10:46Good hang time that time, Jack.
- 1:10:48And for 4.3, he put it up there pretty good.
- 1:10:53And a 57-yard punt for David Lee.
- 1:10:56And a six-yard return for Butch Johnson out to the Dallas 25.
- 1:11:00The Cowboys going from our right to our left here in the second quarter, 325 left in the half.
- 1:11:05Dallas leading 14-0.
- 1:11:07Dwight Harrison is in the defensive backfield now for Baltimore.
- 1:11:11And Stobach on first down gives it to Dorsett.
- 1:11:14He blinks it over to 30, 35, 40 down the sideline midfield, down to the 40, 35, and out of bounds.
- 1:11:21Out of bounds at the 28.
- 1:11:23And Dwight Harrison finally stopped it.
- 1:11:26Dorsett blew it open again.
- 1:11:28Well, he is something.
- 1:11:30They use that from the eye formation again.
- 1:11:32That play was supposed to be.
- 1:11:33One of the high-diddle-dills right up the middle, but he saw the opening on the right side.
- 1:11:37And that's the great thing about the eye formation.
- 1:11:39You see, you can start with it, and you can go anyway.
- 1:11:42Especially with Dorsett's speed, he broke it to the outside, and boy, he's lightning.
- 1:11:46He went 25, 35, 47 yards on that run.
- 1:11:51Dorsett comes out for a breather, and Doug Tennyson replaces him.
- 1:11:54First down is the 28-yard line up all the more.
- 1:11:57He looks like he was put together by Lockheed, doesn't he?
- 1:12:00Boy, he can move.
- 1:12:01Here's the first down for the Cowboys.
- 1:12:03And Stobach is back to throw.
- 1:12:05He is rushed.
- 1:12:06He throws a screen.
- 1:12:07It is caught by Billy Joe Dupree, the tight end, and he gained three, and he was crunched down by Joe Ehrman.
- 1:12:13You know, that time they flooded the back to the weak side.
- 1:12:15They had three people out in the pattern to the weak side to bring the middle linebacker to that side
- 1:12:21and threw a screen to their tight end.
- 1:12:23Billy Joe Dupree didn't make much yardage on a play.
- 1:12:27They responded well to that screen.
- 1:12:29John Dutton put some pressure on Roger Stobach on the play.
- 1:12:322.50 remaining in the half, and it's evident that the Cowboys, Stobach, wants another score
- 1:12:38from the play calling that we are witnessing.
- 1:12:41The ball is to the 25 of Baltimore, second down and seven.
- 1:12:50Stobach is back to throw after faking the handoff to Tennyson.
- 1:12:54Moves up into the pocket, and he throws it to Tony Hill,
- 1:12:58and it is complete with a diving catch inside the 20, very close to a first down, short by about a foot.
- 1:13:04And it will be third down and about a yard with Lyle Blackwood making the defensive play.
- 1:13:10Play action passed. They simulated the sweep action, faking the ball to Tennyson.
- 1:13:14It looked like he might run to the left, threw the ball back to Tony Hill, and a great, great catch.
- 1:13:20Short of the first down, however.
- 1:13:21Part of the campaign last year, there was no doubt that Stobach was struggling with a tender throwing arm,
- 1:13:25but he is throwing like a fastball pitcher now.
- 1:13:28Oh, and you know the other thing, they've got so many plays and so much variety in their arsenal of offensive weapons
- 1:13:34that when they get in this with so many things and they really keep you off balance and keep you guessing,
- 1:13:38and boy, they're tough to stop in this kind of a situation, especially when they got you down 14 to nothing.
- 1:13:44Now we're down to the two minute warning, and the officials have called another time out,
- 1:13:47so let's take a moment for this message.
- 1:13:50They call the comet Lucifer's Hammer. At first, the chances that it would hit Earth head-on were one in a million.
- 1:13:57Then one in a thousand, then one in a hundred, and then...
- 1:14:02It was the end of civilization as we know it, and a terrifying beginning for the men and women who survived.
- 1:14:09Lucifer's Hammer, a novel by Larry Mithin and Jerry Pornell, now in paperback from Fawcett.
- 1:14:15Lucifer's Hammer, it's hitting your bookstore now.
- 1:14:23Now with all that's happened, I'm pretty sure that the Colts would be happy to get into the locker room at a half-time,
- 1:14:28trailing only 14 to nothing, but that's not the way Dallas wants it.
- 1:14:31No, they're going to try, and this is important. I think any time that you're a championship team, a Super Bowl champion,
- 1:14:36I think you have to have the ability to really have a killer instinct, and they have to...
- 1:14:41When they hit people in trouble, they have to get points on the scoreboard, and this is exactly what they're going to do.
- 1:14:47And unless something very dramatic happens, as we go along in this football game, it could really turn out to be a real rout.
- 1:14:53The great events of professional football displays featuring the pioneers of the game to the latest of 93 men enshrined in the Hall of Fame heroes,
- 1:15:01plus an exhibit featuring each of the NFL's 28 teams, are on view every day at the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio.
- 1:15:08Visitors can see and hear the story of pro football, presented movies, sound recordings, and mementos from every period of the game,
- 1:15:15plan a visit sound at the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio, receding a message from the National Football League.
- 1:15:21Third and less than a yard for the Cowboys, inside the 20-year Baltimore,
- 1:15:26star-blocked a new house and a first down to the 15, down to the 10, and inside the 10, first and goal Cowboys.
- 1:15:34Doug Nettles and Lionel Blackwood tried all they could, but it was tough to bring Robert Newhouse to the turf, first and goal from the 9.
- 1:15:42They ran a play against the trend of that formation. Normally when they're in that formation, they like to run to the left that time.
- 1:15:48They were in a strong, they were in a formation that indicated they might run to the left, but they gave it to Robert Newhouse in a straight-ahead shot over the right side.
- 1:15:55Andy Fedrick did a great job along with Tom Rafferty, and he picked up a nice game.
- 1:16:00Tony Hill and Drew Pearson are in as wide receivers with Newhouse and Dorsett in the I formation, Dorsett again over the middle,
- 1:16:06and he gets to the 7, broke one tackle, but was dropped soon thereafter. He picked up a couple.
- 1:16:12Bruce Laird finally got him along with Fred Cook. It'll be second down, and goal from the Baltimore 7 with 1-10 remaining in the half.
- 1:16:22Time called by the Cowboys. Stabock to the sideline to try to determine how he's going to try to negotiate the final eight yards for the score.
- 1:16:30You know, one thing about the I formation against a team that runs a 4-3 defense like the Baltimore Colts are running,
- 1:16:36Simonini is a very active middle linebacker. He doesn't have great size, but he's very active and reads and reacts extremely well,
- 1:16:43and as a result they're making sure they block him. They get him going one way and cut behind him,
- 1:16:48and of course Tony Dorsett has such fantastic reactions and quickness, and he reads that block and goes to the opposite side away from him,
- 1:16:55and he's made some big plays.
- 1:16:57Dorsett has piled up some yardage. The halftime statistic will be very interesting.
- 1:17:01A lot of people continue to pick on Simonini. He continues to hold his own in there, though. He's a tough customer, Anxtram.
- 1:17:07Well, he is. There's no question about that, but I think the point that I'm trying to make here, Jack, is the fact that that's why so many teams
- 1:17:13at the National Football League are using the 3-4 defense or the Oklahoma defense because they get the extra linebacker,
- 1:17:19and they're more apt to be able to pick up that flow because of the extra linebacker on the inside.
- 1:17:24Cowboys have been very big in winning their opening games, and last year they started off with a string of 11 victories in a row.
- 1:17:32Well, Baltimore did the same. They won 7 in a row, got off to a flying start.
- 1:17:37It's second in goal from... Well, they have it marked at the 7-yard line for the Cowboys. They're in a very tight formation with Newhouse and Stubbock.
- 1:17:47And Dorsett, Stubbock's back to throw into the end zone. Touchdown! That was easy.
- 1:17:52Billy Joe the free caught that rifle shot for 7 yards and a touchdown to make it far into nothing.
- 1:18:00And they have Simonini trying to cover him on that play, Jack. I don't know what happened, what the coverage was,
- 1:18:06the guy he licked with Simonini, it looked like he was a little concerned as to whether that was supposed to be his coverage.
- 1:18:12But anyway, it was a mismatch, a touchdown, and now they're lining up to kick the extra point.
- 1:18:17If Septien makes it, it'll be a 21-0 game going in before the half.
- 1:18:22We have 1-06 remaining in the half.
- 1:18:25Simonini was trying to cover him, and Billy Joe the free got field position on him, and Stubbock didn't miss him.
- 1:18:32The extra point attempt is good. That makes it 21-0 with 1-06 remaining in the half.
- 1:18:39Well, we had a scoreless first quarter, but it's long wide open now, and who knows what the second half is going to be like.
- 1:18:45Yeah, if they keep up like this, and Baltimore has to be a little discouraged because they played well enough defensively,
- 1:18:50and I'm sure that they're disappointed that they had opportunities earning the game to get some points on the board,
- 1:18:55but it looks like it's going to be a long, long evening for the Baltimore Colts.
- 1:18:58Incidentally, Jack Buck, you'll be interested to know that the Dallas Cowboys last year averaged 24.6 points per game,
- 1:19:06and the Baltimore Colts averaged 21.1.
- 1:19:11So these teams, when both teams are healthy, are very much alike from an offensive viewpoint.
- 1:19:16Last drive went for 74 yards, 6 plays with Dorsett carrying for 47 of them in 2 minutes and 19 seconds.
- 1:19:25Marshall Johnson, Joe Washington, and Don McCauley are back, waiting for this kickoff from the 70 end of the Cowboys.
- 1:19:34The Cowboys burned earlier on a kickoff return. We'll be bearing down on this one.
- 1:19:39There's the kick high in the air, and it's taken by Johnson on the 8-yard line.
- 1:19:43He's to the 15-20, trying to go down the left sideline.
- 1:19:46Hurdles the man, gets out to the 30, and he is finally driven back after his forward progress was to the Baltimore 29.
- 1:19:53And Larry Bethea was the tackler.
- 1:19:56We have a special sports weekend for you, September 30th and October 1st.
- 1:20:00It's win-e-l-y, it's Wonderful World of Baseball.
- 1:20:0317 special broadcasts the weekend prior to the American and National League playoffs.
- 1:20:07Saturday and Sunday, September 30th and October 1st.
- 1:20:11Listen here for the Wonderful World of Baseball on most of these CVS stations.
- 1:20:18Interesting the ball care at that time, Hurdle, this is a new rule this year that you can do that and not be penalized.
- 1:20:25Mike Kirkland at the quarterback spot, trying to make good use of the final minute of this first half, is back to throw.
- 1:20:31Screens it out here in complete to Marshall Johnson.
- 1:20:35Ball was overthrown to Marshall Johnson, and Kirkland is not having a good night at all putting the ball in the air.
- 1:20:41And what it does more than anything, at least to me, Hank Scram, is make you appreciate the ability of a Bert Jones and other Roger Stobach and the others who can get the ball to the receiver.
- 1:20:50Not only the athletic ability and the artistic skill, but in conjunction with that, the great leader qualities that he has.
- 1:20:58You know, the other thing that's interesting tonight is the fact that the Dallas Cowboys are really doing a good job of guessing on first down,
- 1:21:04they're moving linebackers to help double cover on the outside, and that too is disrupting the quarterback.
- 1:21:09And his opportunity to get the ball to the receiver because you're a little concerned that time with D.D. Lewis out on the flat number 50.
- 1:21:15On second down and 10 here is a pass caught beautifully by Marshall Johnson for a first down in midfield.
- 1:21:21Marshall Johnson hauled one in with 47 seconds left in the half.
- 1:21:26A finally thrown pass by Kirkland, timeout called by Baltimore, stopping the clock with 44 seconds remaining before the intermission,
- 1:21:33and Kirkland to the sideline to talk it over with Ted Marchibroda.
- 1:21:38He threw that nicely. You know, anytime that you throw inside, it's also, it's very important, number one, that you have good range and good size.
- 1:21:46And Kirkland has a 6-1, he's not overly tall, but he's 6-1 and weighs about 205 pounds, but he whistled that ball in good shape right into the scene.
- 1:21:56He threw it inside, it was a big play and a nice reception and a first down.
- 1:22:01And that despite the extra defensive backs, Hughes and Washington, and we're both in there,
- 1:22:06each club has two timeouts remaining here in the first half and the Colts now have a first down at midfield.
- 1:22:12But the score is the Cowboys 21 and Baltimore nothing.
- 1:22:17Tony Dorsett got in for a touchdown after Doug Denison scored the first one and Billy Joe Dupree had the honor of scoring the third Dallas touchdown of the season.
- 1:22:29Baltimore Colts will be back at home next Sunday and they take on Miami.
- 1:22:36And even then Hank, it doesn't appear that Bert Jones is going to be ready.
- 1:22:40No, I don't think so. I think it's probably reasonable to assume that he will miss anywhere from three to four games and he'd be lucky to get back in time, maybe for the fifth one.
- 1:22:48I don't know.
- 1:22:49Randy White with them brings them down with one hand, but again a four yards in the play.
- 1:22:54Still in bounds, the clock running, 30 seconds remaining in the half. Timeout now.
- 1:22:59Baltimore, 29 seconds remaining in the half and the Colts have one timeout left.
- 1:23:07They're good up front. Hank, when you see the Cowboys able to put people like Larry Cole and their number one draft pick, Larry Bethea, in there along with Dave Stahls.
- 1:23:18They're not only good, but they have depth.
- 1:23:20Larry Bethea, incidentally, was the most valuable player of the Big Ten last year, the first defense player to win that honor since Dick Butka stood it in 1960, which is an indication of the kind of a player he is.
- 1:23:31And the Cowboys can't afford the luxury of moving those rookies along very slowly. Bethea, for example, is working behind Harvey Martin. Martin doesn't figure to give up that job right away.
- 1:23:42No, no, that's going to be a tough task. You know, incidentally, on that last play, Marshall Johnson already was wide open.
- 1:23:49Kirkland had never even looked over in that direction, but he had a big margin of a cushion, and he could have taken advantage of it that last time, but he didn't see him at all.
- 1:24:02And let's see this time if he comes back and maybe tries to get the ball to him.
- 1:24:07He ran for three down to the 46th yard line of the Cowboys, handed the second down and seven as a result.
- 1:24:15Now he goes to the left, cars to the right, and Marshall Johnson is also a wide receiver. Here the pressure is on, and running out of the pocket is Kirkland but Tackleball lost back.
- 1:24:31Hadn't it peeled by Randy White who got him for the second time in a row.
- 1:24:36And Thomas Henderson is slow getting up. Linebacker for the Cowboys.
- 1:24:42Buddy appears to be alright. It's going to be third down and ten with 24 seconds remaining here in the half.
- 1:24:50The clock has stopped because of the sack of the quarterback. Now it's running now with 20 seconds left in the half.
- 1:24:57Roger Carr was open that last time, but he couldn't get the ball to him. He had a good inside move on Aaron Kyle, number 25, but he just couldn't get the ball up in the air.
- 1:25:07And I think that's what's been done in Carr, very capable of getting out into the open. Here is Kirkland in trouble and wrestled down by Harvey Martin and the people love it here.
- 1:25:16Another loss on the play, back to the 40 yard line and he appears to be hurt. Kirkland is slow pulling himself together.
- 1:25:26Two seconds remaining in the half. Kirkland is up now. He's a tough kid. He took a wallop from Harvey Martin.
- 1:25:32Two seconds remaining in the half and after the quarterback's sack, they stopped the clock. They'll probably start it. The half will run out in all probability without an additional play.
- 1:25:44Kirkland went to the sideline, came back in. Colts have one time on left. I don't think they're anxious to try anything. They're trailing 21 to nothing.
- 1:25:53The clock will run out right here and there's the gun ending the first half while the Cowboys fans have to be happy after a four scoreless first quarter.
- 1:26:06Here we go with the stats of the first half. Dallas of course winning 21-0 at halftime. Once again, the scored halftime from Dallas, Texas. Dallas Cowboys 21, Baltimore Coast, nothing.
- 1:26:21It'll be interesting to see what happens in the second half. This young Baltimore Colts team I'm sure is very depressed about the fact that they're down 21 to nothing.
- 1:26:28The defensive unit especially, they have not played that badly but it's very disappointing and very discouraging when you're a good defensive team and you know that you're playing consistently well
- 1:26:39but you know that the offense because of the problems that exist with the Baltimore Colts will not have much of an opportunity to move the ball and score points.
- 1:26:46That doesn't necessarily mean that they won't be able to do that in the second half. Anything can happen. There's a possibility that there would be some big plays in the second half.
- 1:26:53The young quarterback, Mike Kirkland hasn't had much of an opportunity to do much because of the severe rush from the Dallas Cowboys.
- 1:27:00And one of the things that's most difficult to do when you play against Dallas and especially when they know you're going to pump the ball up and throw it, boy, it's hard to get pass protection.
- 1:27:09They put so much pressure on you and make it tough. It'll be interesting to see how they try to attack this situation and solve the problem but I think they're going to have to do some running early in the game in the second half
- 1:27:18and then do more throwing especially on first down.
- 1:27:25We are at the Texas stadium here in Irving, Texas and the score is 21 to nothing.
- 1:27:30And we're anxious to see what happens with the final 30 minutes of football here between the Baltimore Colts and the Dallas Cowboys.
- 1:27:37Neither team has come back yet after the intermission.
- 1:27:40Let's check the baseball activity of today to mix a little baseball and football and have a look lightly at the scores and at the standings as well.
- 1:27:50As Pittsburgh took a double header from the Mets, 7-4 and 7-0. They picked up a full game on Philadelphia.
- 1:27:57Philadelphia split a double header with the Cardinals. The Fills lost 3-2 and then they won 10-2 and so the Pirates are now only one game out of first place in the National League East and the Cubs were dumped twice today, 5-3 and 6-5 and so they're now 4-1-1-2 behind.
- 1:28:15And in the Western division, the night action causes us to see the standing still. The Dodgers won ahead of the Giants in Cincinnati 6-1-1-2 behind Los Angeles.
- 1:28:26In the American League, the Yankees split a double header winning 9-1 over Detroit and then losing by the score of 5-4.
- 1:28:33But that's a pickup of a half game for the Yankees as Baltimore knocked off Boston by the score of 5-3 and the Yankees are only 5 games out.
- 1:28:43Milwaukee split a double header and so they pick up a half a game and the Brewers are 7 games off the pace.
- 1:28:51And we do not have scores of other games that would change the standings in the West where Kansas City was a game ahead of California.
- 1:28:59Well, Hank Stram, you've been in a spot that Ted Marchabrota has been in frequently, fortunately not too many times.
- 1:29:07What in the world do you think they're going to do to try to change it around?
- 1:29:11Well, the one thing, you know, they can't, they can't panic and they can't lose sight of the fact that they still have a chance even though it looks like it's going to be extremely tough.
- 1:29:22They just can't give up in the second half. They have to go out in the second half do everything they possibly can.
- 1:29:27That's what the team has to realize. They have to come up somehow, some way with some big plays.
- 1:29:31They have to recapture the poor's incompetence that they might have had going into the ball game about what they could do.
- 1:29:36But it's going to be difficult. One thing is going to be very tough to do, which I mentioned.
- 1:29:41Big winners, as I mentioned earlier, you know, the last three years they've been 10, 4, 11, 3, 10, 4. They haven't done that by accident.
- 1:29:48They're not going to panic. They're going to do what they think they can do best.
- 1:29:51And they're going to have to run the ball some early and try to get in the situation where they can do a better job of throwing play action passes sometimes in early downs.
- 1:29:59Second down and nine. Four of the Colts from their own 27.
- 1:30:02Kirkman is back to throw out of the pocket. He throws and Roosevelt Leakes has it fatted away by the linebacker, Thomas Henderson.
- 1:30:09Henderson used his superior size to get over the top.
- 1:30:13Boy, he's a great athlete. He responds so well. Terrific agility. And he made a great play on that pass pattern.
- 1:30:21Leakes had him beaten and Kirkman threw quite a pass. Randy Hughes and Mark Washington check in defensively for the Cowboys.
- 1:30:29And Larry Cole goes in to try to apply the rush.
- 1:30:33As the Cowboys show a four man front and take out one of the linebackers, two of the linebackers.
- 1:30:39Third down and nine for Kirkman. Kirkman rolls, left, stays out of trouble, throws it over the middle.
- 1:30:45It is caught and it's a first down for the Baltimore Colts.
- 1:30:50And Ron Lee halted in coming out of the backfield and moved across his 40 yard line to the 41.
- 1:30:56It was a semi-roll and he threw the ball right on the numbers to Lee who made the catch and made the first down. A big third down play.
- 1:31:04That's the way you had Lenny Dawson rolling out of the pocket and throwing.
- 1:31:07Well, it's so important. I think if you throw from the same spot consistently, there's no way in the world that you're going to be able to get the ball off, especially against a team like the Dallas Cowboys.
- 1:31:16You can move the pocket while you've got a chance.
- 1:31:18How do you write? Cars to the left and here is a give to Roosevelt Leakes. He cut it back up the inside after starting to his right and gained two or three.
- 1:31:28And he was stopped at the 44 yard line of the Colts. A three yard game, second down and seven.
- 1:31:36Twenty-one to nothing. The Cowboys are leading. We're early on in the third quarter here at Texas Stadium in Irving, Texas.
- 1:31:46And next Monday night we'll be in Minneapolis where the Denver Broncos will be playing.
- 1:31:55It's a second down play for Mike Kirkland.
- 1:32:01And here are the flags all over the place on a busted play. Down goes Kirkland.
- 1:32:07Has everybody pulled in the center evidently with the snap count? Yes, it doesn't, but nothing makes the team look worse than having that kind of a play happen.
- 1:32:17I think possibly it might have been a change at the line of scrimmage.
- 1:32:21The Dallas team is guessing with their linebackers and trying to take away patterns on passing situations.
- 1:32:29And as a result, I think sometimes it's confused Kirkland and I think possibly that might have happened on that last play.
- 1:32:36Here is an offside and it is declined as Kirkland went down at his 39 yard line.
- 1:32:41That is now the new line of scrimmage and it is third down in 11.
- 1:32:45The Cowboys put in Washington and Hughes to help with the pass defense.
- 1:32:49Dave Stahl's up front to apply the pressure and it looks like they're going to blitz. At least they show it.
- 1:32:55And they're coming. And Kirkland fires it out here to Ron Lee. No screen is there and he is really racked up at his 38 yard line.
- 1:33:05And there will be a loss on the play at that time.
- 1:33:07Yeah, Cliff Harris came up and read it well, was in on the tackle, which you got to throw the ball up field.
- 1:33:13It's difficult to play catch up football when you throw the ball sideways. You got to get it up field some way.
- 1:33:19When Randy Hughes comes in, he frequently will blitz as he was doing that time and he chased Kirkland away out of the pocket.
- 1:33:26Fourth down now and Dave Lee is in the putt.
- 1:33:29And Butch Johnson stands at his own 20 waiting to give Dallas the ball for the first time in the second half.
- 1:33:36Though the Colts kept it for only two and a half minutes.
- 1:33:39This line drive putt is taken on the 28 yard line to the 30-35-40 yard line for Butch Johnson.
- 1:33:44And down at the 42 yard line, the Cowboys are in a great spot to run.
- 1:33:49Aaron Kyle made a good block as Johnson took it back to his own 42.
- 1:33:5412-28 remaining in the third quarter. And with the score of the Dallas Cowboys 21, Baltimore nothing. Let's take that up.
- 1:34:03Over the years, you've learned that sometimes procrastination pays.
- 1:34:08So you shop for snow shovels in July, lawnmowers in December, and your Buick Regal now.
- 1:34:14Because you know that this is the time of year when Buick dealers may be even more open than usual to conversations involving deals.
- 1:34:22An elegant, luxurious Regal? Yes you can. Right now at your Buick dealers.
- 1:34:27Let's do this. Let's do this.
- 1:34:37Here we go with Dallas possession, first in 10. The ball is on about the 42 yard line.
- 1:34:45Dallas leading.
- 1:34:46Wilson, Hank Strandler.
- 1:34:4821 and a half.
- 1:34:49There are philosophy here in the second half.
- 1:34:51They're not going to change any, I tell you. They're going to throw every play they have in the book.
- 1:34:55Every formation. They do that so well.
- 1:34:57The interesting thing, you know, you see the Cowboys shift and create formations a lot.
- 1:35:01You wonder how the backs get to where they're going.
- 1:35:03The basic rule of thumb is really if they go on a long count, they want the back to double shift on their own.
- 1:35:08They don't care where they line up prematurely.
- 1:35:10They just want to make sure they're in the right spot when the ball is snapped.
- 1:35:13And this is how they get there. They do it on their own.
- 1:35:15The ball is at the 42 yard line at Newhouse and the door is setter in the backfield with Roger Stabach.
- 1:35:21And he hands off to Newhouse. The inside hand off. He moves out to the 45 and across near the 47 yard line.
- 1:35:29And they pick up about five yards. Interest in the Nenity Gunner.
- 1:35:33The interesting thing, they started the game with a counter play just like the one that we just saw with Bobby Newhouse.
- 1:35:39And they started the second half with exactly the same play. They want to make sure that they control the middle linebacker and also the quick flow of the defensive line of the Ballamore Colts.
- 1:35:48Drew Pearson comes to the left and Tony Hill is the wide receiver on the right side, second down in five from the 48 yard line for the Cowboys.
- 1:35:57And Stabach gives it to Newhouse again. He's across midfield and trying to get the first down and he does manage to do it.
- 1:36:05Fred Cook and Lyle Pleckwood couldn't take him down. Newhouse kept struggling and he got a first down for the Cowboys.
- 1:36:12It didn't take them long to move the necessary ten yards.
- 1:36:16The Cowboys are playing Fitzgerald at Setter. Rafferty and Scott at the guard, Dunnevin and Frederick at the tackle spot.
- 1:36:23Billy Joe Dupree at the tight end. Tony Hill and Drew Pearson the wide receiver's door set in Newhouse and the backfield with Stabach.
- 1:36:30Pearson Wright and Hill at first down at the 47 of Ballamore.
- 1:36:36And the first down, give the door set, door set. Inside the 45 to 40, inside the 35 and tackled at the 31 yard line by the middle linebacker, Simon and E.
- 1:36:47Door set is full speed tonight.
- 1:36:51Pat Dunnevin, Herb Scott did a good job of blocking at the point of attack on the strong side there. And door set, you just can't explain how exciting he is because once he sees any kind of a seam, well, he really makes things happen.
- 1:37:07They marked the ball down at the 30 yard line at Ballamore, a first down for the Cowboys. Looks like they can do most anything they want to do right now.
- 1:37:15They like to play action in this situation, in this part of the field on first down. I don't know whether to do it now, but they like to do it. There you see Tony Hill going in the other side of the ball.
- 1:37:23Hill is a flanker of the right and here's a give the new house. He went deep trying to get outside. A flag is thrown and he is down for a loss of a yard on the play.
- 1:37:32A clip by Drew Pearson.
- 1:37:34He was blackwood along with Dwight Harrison. Yeah, Drew Pearson that time on a crack back block was clipping on the play. Very obvious penalty. The timing of the play was bad and of course now it's a penalty.
- 1:37:47Turnovers hurt the Cowboys in the first half. Nonetheless, they got the three TDs to put them on top. Not many penalties in this game, but this one will hurt Dallas.
- 1:37:59You know, with all the rule changes, I think the officials so far and what I've seen have really done a great job. There hasn't been too many calls.
- 1:38:06Let's listen to Jim Tunick. First of all, clipping, number 88 offense.
- 1:38:13Drew Pearson with a crack back block and the clipping call moves the ball to the 48 yard line of Baltimore and makes it long yardage for Dallas. First down and 26.
- 1:38:27Interesting. Jack Buck first penalty for the Dallas Cowboys.
- 1:38:33First down and long yardage. Dorset and Newhouse in the backfield. And on first down, Stobach back to throw. Wants to get it back in a hurry. He throws it up the middle. It's caught by...
- 1:38:45It's caught by a Pearson coming back on a come back pattern and he picked up quite a few yards, moving it down to the 37 yard line of the Colts. Nettles tackled him along with Bruce Laird.
- 1:38:59I don't like to throw the ball around Lyle Blackwood. He led the league in interceptions last year.
- 1:39:04He had 10 interceptions last year and the remarkable thing about it was that Stan White, who is not playing now because of an injury, he had 7 interceptions last year as a linebacker.
- 1:39:16It both liked the ball. It's second down and 15 now. Simon Iney is out and Lloyd Mumford goes in as an extra back for the Colts.
- 1:39:24And they'll try to put the pressure on Stobach if indeed he is running. On second down, it's a running play. The Dorset, he moves inside the 35. It's taken down by Joe Ehrman. And it will be third down and 12 coming up.
- 1:39:37That was another counter play. They try to get the middle linebacker, Simon Iney, moving in one direction and run behind him. They recovered nicely on the play and it was just a minor, a mild game on that running action.
- 1:39:49On third and 12, Ray Oldham checks in and the linebacker goes out.
- 1:39:54Andrew Shiver comes out for Baltimore and Preston Pearson is in the backfield now for the Cowboys.
- 1:40:00They'll go in there as spread formation. They usually will go into the spread formation on third and four or more. They're in the spread formation.
- 1:40:07The triple wing on one side, a double wing on the other, which means there's three people on one side and two on the other.
- 1:40:13And Flag stops the play before Stobach can do anything. They might have had an illegal formation that time, Hank.
- 1:40:21It's procedure against the Cowboys. That'll make a third down in the 17. And Baltimore has no choice. They have to accept the penalty here.
- 1:40:31Let's listen to Jim Tunney once more.
- 1:40:33Call start, number 71, offense. Still third.
- 1:40:37The Frederick was called for being offside in the procedure call against the Cowboys. 8.50 left in the third quarter. No scoring in this period.
- 1:40:46Cowboys on top 21 to nothing and they now have third and 17 from the Baltimore 38.
- 1:40:51You know, in the spread formation, they're trying to isolate Preston Pearson on many situations and trying to get him on number 25 Oldham.
- 1:41:01They did that in the past and it'd be interesting to see if they can do it again. He's in a different set this time. He's in blocking Preston Pearson is with Maxon Percussion.
- 1:41:08Uh-oh. There's a pass to Pearson and he's in for the touchdown. Stobach throw it over the middle.
- 1:41:14And Drew Pearson caught it inside the ten yard line between Neville and Harrison and failed in for the touchdown.
- 1:41:22They had Maxon Percussion that time. Preston Pearson, who usually is out in the pattern.
- 1:41:30They had an awful lot of room on the inside that time. There was too much of a cushion.
- 1:41:36And the rest of history is obvious touchdown. Great completion from Roger Stobach to Drew Pearson, number 88.
- 1:41:46It can happen with 8.43 remaining here in the third quarter. Charlie Waters will spot the ball and set the end.
- 1:41:53We'll try to make it 28 to nothing, and he does. And the Cowboys put on quite a drive. March down the field seemed to do it.
- 1:42:02At Will, despite the penalties, they went in to score. And a timeout on the field with a score of the Cowboys 28 and Ball to More Nothing.
- 1:42:12Okay, here's the play. Y.D. will fall back with a ball. Biff will go to the side. Slambowsky will... Slambowsky, pay attention.
- 1:42:20Oh, sorry. I was just thinking about the specials I saw at the Colony Pro Shop yesterday.
- 1:42:25Not a good one.
- 1:42:26Listen, guys, would you pass up three Spalding Executive Woods and eight Irons for $269.95?
- 1:42:32Hey, that's not bad.
- 1:42:34Or how about four Spalding Executive Woods and eight Irons for $269.95?
- 1:42:39It sounds like Slambowsky's found some good deals.
- 1:42:41Alright, guys, let's get back to the game. Now, Morgan, you and if you buy either of these specials, you get a dozen top flight golf balls free.
- 1:42:49Oh, come on.
- 1:42:50Wow, those prices are good.
- 1:42:52Sounds good.
- 1:42:53Hey, guys, let's get back to the game.
- 1:42:55Okay, guys, come back. Slambowsky, you're traded.
- 1:43:00The Colony Pro Shop. Their prices may not be worth stopping the game for, but they sure are worth stopping in to see.
- 1:43:07Stop in and see for yourself on the outside of Northway Mall and the Albany Municipal Golf Course.
- 1:43:12Raphael, set the end. We'll kick it off and let's pause five seconds for stations to identify themselves on the CBS Radio Network.
- 1:43:26W.R.O.W. Albany.
- 1:43:29Three deep men for the Colts. They're Don McCauley, Marshall Johnson and Joe Washington.
- 1:43:348.43 remaining in the third quarter and it's the Cowboys now by four touchdowns.
- 1:43:39This kick is high down to the three yard line.
- 1:43:44It is taken by Marshall Johnson. He's quickly to the 20, goes outside to the 25, a flag is down, and Marshall Johnson goes down at his own 30 with Mike Hakeman making another downfield tackle.
- 1:43:55And well Chuck DeFenle, it usually has to do with clipping on those kick returns and the Colts are going way back as though they expected to be marched off against them.
- 1:44:10Johnson is showing something, uh, indications that he's going to be a good kick return man for the Colts this year.
- 1:44:16Yes, he is and I don't mean to be facetious about this. He's certainly got a lot of practice tonight.
- 1:44:21Holding during the run back, number 71. First down.
- 1:44:26I hate to keep bringing this up, but here again he's a fine young runner, but here again he's running to the left with a ball in his right arm.
- 1:44:33That's when you're inviting trouble from the inside and providing teams to put you in a fumble situation.
- 1:44:39A holding call sends the Colts back to their 16 yard line and that's what Mike Kirkman did not want.
- 1:44:45And he fakes the handoff to Leakes. He is rushed by Jones. He passes out here to Doughty and Doughty caught the ball and moved up to the 25 yard line.
- 1:44:54And that was a sidearm delivery by Kirkman.
- 1:44:56I tell you, he did a great job at getting rid of that ball that time.
- 1:44:59To talk Jones was in on him. He threw the ball sidearm and got the ball away in good shape.
- 1:45:04It is close to a first down. Very well executed play.
- 1:45:07A lot of poise on the part of this young quarterback, Mike Kirkman.
- 1:45:10And a gain of nine yards on the play. It'll make it second down and short.
- 1:45:16With 818 remaining in the third quarter.
- 1:45:22You know, with the way the game's going, this would be a good time with second and shorter waist down to try to get something on top.
- 1:45:28He has Leakes and Ron Lee in the backfield with him. Doughty's to the right.
- 1:45:32Roger Carr is to the left side. He's been nullified here this evening.
- 1:45:36Here's the running play by Ron Lee out of the tail back spot.
- 1:45:40He got the first down, but then he was stopped at his track by Jeff Grobe.
- 1:45:44Here again, the Cowboys are guessing remarkably well.
- 1:45:47On the waist down, D.D. Lewis lined up tight inside.
- 1:45:50And then right before the snap of the ball ran out to double cover Roger Carr.
- 1:45:54And of course, that's always disconcerting, especially to a quarterback,
- 1:45:57because even though you want to throw the ball, sometimes you're concerned when that happens,
- 1:46:01whether you're going to get double or whether you're going to get single coverage, and it's difficult to make that decision sometimes.
- 1:46:07The Colts are out to their own 27 with the first down.
- 1:46:10They go strong to the left with the two wide receivers.
- 1:46:13Mac Austin, the tight end is on the right side.
- 1:46:16On first down, it's rolled out for Kirkland and he throws, and it is caught by Roger Carr for the first time this evening.
- 1:46:24And he has dropped immediately, but at his own 42, Aaron Kyle got him, and it is a first down for the Colts.
- 1:46:30And a pretty well thrown ball by Mike Kirkland.
- 1:46:33Yes, he did. He threw it right at the numbers where you have to throw it.
- 1:46:37It was a semi-roll again. He moved to his left.
- 1:46:41He did that earlier in the game and completed the pass.
- 1:46:44We probably should be seeing a little bit more of that as the game progresses.
- 1:46:48Faded tenons here tonight is more than 64,000. 64,224.
- 1:46:54The Colts at their own 48 with the first down.
- 1:46:56He used a wing formation. Ron Lee carries the ball up the middle, got to the 45, and that's all.
- 1:47:01He got a couple.
- 1:47:04Lee, a young man from West Virginia, has the size to be a running back in the NFL at 64,234.
- 1:47:12He'll get his chances with light El Mitchell gone now.
- 1:47:15Yes, and he's a good receiver, they tell me, too. They like him very much.
- 1:47:18He's a long legged, long strider, but he's got good power and he's supposedly a very outstanding athlete.
- 1:47:24Second down and eighth.
- 1:47:26Let's see if the Cowboys tee off.
- 1:47:29They're not showing the Blitz right at the moment as Kirkland is under center and how they show the Blitz.
- 1:47:34The Blitz is on. Kirkland from the pocket throws long.
- 1:47:37Car's not there. Aaron Kyle is. He intercepts it and goes out of bounds.
- 1:47:41Aaron Kyle turned around and there it was.
- 1:47:44He evidently anticipated Roger Carr going outside.
- 1:47:48Roger Carr went inside.
- 1:47:50They have an altercation back upfield with some people tangling.
- 1:47:54That's quickly broken up by the officials.
- 1:47:57Randy, let's see.
- 1:47:59Eggman is involved in that along with Ron Lee, Dee Dee Lewis.
- 1:48:02Quite a few of them there are struggling.
- 1:48:04Somebody, it looks like, might be thrown out of the football game.
- 1:48:07I don't know who it is, but there's a possibility the way the official responded to what happened on the bottom of that file.
- 1:48:13An interception by Aaron Kyle gives the Cowboys the ball.
- 1:48:17No penalty flags have been thrown. Looks like they might just forget it.
- 1:48:20Here's the official telling us it's a personal foul against both clubs.
- 1:48:28And the ball will stay right where it is.
- 1:48:33We have 6-0-2 remaining in the third quarter.
- 1:48:36It looks like he might have got a little massage in the bottom of that file.
- 1:48:40He was very upset about it and I thought maybe he was going to take somebody out of the game.
- 1:48:45And now Ray is coming to the sideline. He might very well have ejected a couple of players.
- 1:48:50Jim Tunney is going over to talk first of all to Ted Marchabrota and now to Tom Landry.
- 1:48:57And we'll have to wait and see if indeed there was a disqualification.
- 1:49:03I was watching the interception by Kyle and I didn't see the mixing it up back upfield
- 1:49:10where Eggman or Kirkland had been standing and throwing the ball.
- 1:49:14The Cowboys move now from their own 29 yard line.
- 1:49:20With Stobach still in there.
- 1:49:23Perhaps we'll see Danny White before this evening is over.
- 1:49:26Motion by Tony Hill. Give to the tail back door set.
- 1:49:29A little mix up in the backfield and Dorsett has dropped four laws.
- 1:49:32He ran into his guard and you can't get away with that.
- 1:49:35No you can and of course Dorsett is so fast and also so quick
- 1:49:39that you better be able to move quickly as an offensive guard.
- 1:49:42He's got number 68. He got caught in the traffic like a revolving door.
- 1:49:47And of all the more players down on the other side of the field he's being tended to.
- 1:49:52Doug Nettles was unable to get up after that last play.
- 1:49:56Yeah. Doug Nettles number 30.
- 1:49:59We have 548 remaining here in the third quarter of the game.
- 1:50:03A pause in the action with a score of the Cowboys 28.
- 1:50:06The cold snuffing and let's take time out.
- 1:50:08This is the perfect time of year to get outside and get up in an airplane.
- 1:50:12And the skilled professionals of Richmore Aviation,
- 1:50:15located at Schenectady Saratoga and Columbia County airports,
- 1:50:18are all set to help you do just that at an amazingly low price.

- 1:50:37So now's your chance to enjoy the beautiful days of Indian summer
- 1:50:40while you learn the valuable lifetime skill.
- 1:50:43And now's the time to get up and learn to fly with Richmore Aviation.
- 1:50:47And remember, there's a financing plan available for the CPC Private Pilot Course.
- 1:50:52And when you get a pilot's license, you're eligible to enter the takeoff sweepstakes
- 1:50:56and win an airplane.
- 1:50:58No purchase necessary.
- 1:51:00Boyd, we're prohibited by law.
- 1:51:02Remember that's Richmore Aviation,
- 1:51:04located at Schenectady Saratoga and Columbia County Airport.
- 1:51:12Second and 12 for the Cowboys now.
- 1:51:15Ball is at their own 27-yard line.
- 1:51:19We're not certain, but we believe that Dede Lewis and Ron Lee
- 1:51:22have both been disqualified from this game.
- 1:51:25Tony Hill is a wide receiver, along with Drew Pearson,
- 1:51:28for the Cowboys. They're staying with their number one unit.
- 1:51:31And Stalbock is back to throw on second down.
- 1:51:34And he screams it out the door, set a broken tackle.
- 1:51:36He's at the 25-30.
- 1:51:38He is to the 35-yard line, short of a first down.
- 1:51:41It'll be third and long coming up, and Fred Cook tackled it.
- 1:51:44He can blow through those tackles.
- 1:51:46Oh, he really can. And really, Sandy Shivers read the play very well,
- 1:51:49but he missed the tackle.
- 1:51:51And of course, he's such a great running back that he's going to make you do that.
- 1:51:54Shivers had perfect position on him, and it looked like he was going to nail him,
- 1:51:58but he made an outside-inside move and it was all over.
- 1:52:00Now Burton Lawless of the Cowboys is unable to get off the deck after that play.
- 1:52:04After that play, and the clock has stopped again.
- 1:52:07It's going to be third down and four for the Cowboys when play resumes.
- 1:52:12Tom Rapparty will be in there, all probability,
- 1:52:15in place of Lawless at the guard position.
- 1:52:18Hank, does it surprise you that the Cowboys have waited until now,
- 1:52:23and even passed this time, before putting in some of their reserved personnel?
- 1:52:26No, it really doesn't. You know, things can change so quickly.
- 1:52:29In professional football, that you want to make sure that you use your top people,
- 1:52:33as long as you possibly can, and feel sure and secure that the game's under control.
- 1:52:37We were in many, many games. One year we played the Denver Broncos in Kansas City.
- 1:52:42We had a sizeable lead. I think it was like 28 to 3.
- 1:52:45And we scored another touchdown later in the game that made it 35.
- 1:52:50And finally won the game like 40 to 36.
- 1:52:53I remember one game at Denver when Buffalo had 33 to nothing at the half,
- 1:52:58and it ended in the 33, 33 times.
- 1:53:02Yeah, you're really surprised Ralph Wilson at the time didn't you?
- 1:53:04He was pretty startling. He left early.
- 1:53:06I think he left half-timed, didn't you?
- 1:53:08Trying to beat the snowstorm, thinking he had a playoff first,
- 1:53:11and that knocked him out of the playoffs.
- 1:53:13Preston Pearson goes into the lineup for the Dallas Cowboys as Burton Lawless
- 1:53:17walks off and looking pretty good as he goes to the sideline.
- 1:53:21That's enough that the players have been disqualified.
- 1:53:25We're having quite a bit of difficulty.
- 1:53:28That the way it is, Dee Dee Lewis and Ron Lee are both ejected from the game.
- 1:53:33Disqualified is the term that they use in the NFL.
- 1:53:36And Jim Tunney, the referee, didn't fool around with it, did he?
- 1:53:39No, no. And he made that call as he was laying on the ground.
- 1:53:42He was coming up and he made that call. I thought that's what it was.
- 1:53:45And anytime you see the official go to the post benches,
- 1:53:47you know that he's telling the coaches that both players have been kicked out of the ballgame.
- 1:53:53The NFL's got a 64,000 fade here tonight.
- 1:53:56The NFL for the weekend drew 822,000 for the opening weekend,
- 1:54:01the largest in NFL history for the opening weekend.
- 1:54:04And it is third down and four for the Cowboys who are in the shotgun with Stubbock
- 1:54:10taking the snap back to throw, looking and throwing all of the middle.
- 1:54:13It's caught for a first down by Preston Pearson.
- 1:54:16He's at the 45 and tackle there.
- 1:54:18After making some shifty moves, it's a first down for the Cowboys that they're on 45
- 1:54:24and they can get what they need.
- 1:54:26Yes, and you know, here again, they put, they've had a mismatch with Preston Pearson,
- 1:54:30number 26 on Semonini, 56.
- 1:54:33They went a triple wing formation to the right, pre-receivers on the right side,
- 1:54:36two on the left, they just ran Preston Pearson on the inside.
- 1:54:39He was wide open in the course of another big game.
- 1:54:41I've got to repeat that the Coltson, this kind of a game with the kind of patterns that Dallas is using,
- 1:54:47really missed Stan White at that linebacker spot.
- 1:54:50Oh, they do, and it's really unfortunate that the Baltimore team, it's a great football team, it really is.
- 1:54:54I think they've earned the right to be recognized as one that's going to a big game like this one,
- 1:54:58the initial game of the season without two great performers like Bert Jones and Stan White.
- 1:55:03A whistle sound and a flag drop procedure against the Cowboys will make it first in 15
- 1:55:09and move the ball back to their own 41 yard line with 4-10 remaining in the third quarter,
- 1:55:1428 to nothing Cowboys, and I have the feeling that the Cowboys wish the clock would move a little more rapidly than it's going.
- 1:55:21Well, you know, the one thing about the calls that have been made on a legal procedure,
- 1:55:26any time that you shift and create formations as much as they do, and they let the backs do that on their own,
- 1:55:32there's bound to be some mix-ups, and this is what's happened several times in the game tonight.
- 1:55:36Out of the eye of formation, the Cowboys shift into a pro-set back into the eye with Dorset,
- 1:55:41and on first down the give is to Tony, he is hitting the backfield, gets away, changes direction,
- 1:55:46he's at midfield, he's at the 45 and he has to out-break three men for a touchdown,
- 1:55:51and he is out of bounds at the end yard line, Doug Meadows got him.
- 1:55:57Boy, he's amazing.
- 1:55:58He's the score.
- 1:55:59Is he amazing?
- 1:56:00And here again, he was nothing but a basic vanilla handoff to the weak side to the split inside,
- 1:56:06Pat Dunovan, perverse Scott making the play.
- 1:56:10He starts to go inside, which he normally has done in the past, but he jumped outside,
- 1:56:14and John Dutton had a piece of him, but this is the tackle, he cuts across the side of the field
- 1:56:20and picks up a great game on a beautiful run.
- 1:56:23A lot of people watched Dorset running for the University of Pittsburgh,
- 1:56:26didn't believe what they were saying, they said, nobody could be that good.
- 1:56:29He is.
- 1:56:30Yeah, he is. He certainly is, and if you think he's good, why, he's even better than what you think.
- 1:56:35First and goal from the eighth, Dorset is out for a breather, and Doug Denison is in the backfield with Robert Newhouse.
- 1:56:41Denison, the tail back in the eye formation, Stabach, first and goal,
- 1:56:44gives to Denison up the middle, inside the five.
- 1:56:47He drives to the two yard line.
- 1:56:49He scored a touchdown earlier tonight.
- 1:56:51Denison finally stopped on Lyle Blackwood, but it's going to be second and goal,
- 1:56:56and the ball is marked down.
- 1:57:00Two yards away from the Baltimore goal line.
- 1:57:03Well, one right here with the score already 28-0.
- 1:57:07There's got to be bad news for the visitors.
- 1:57:09Oh, it really is, and that was another play where they're just trying to run up the middle,
- 1:57:12trying to get Simonini going one way or the other, and taking advantage of his mobility side to side.
- 1:57:17Incidentally, Tony Dorset has carried 16 times for 145 yards, 9-1.
- 1:57:23Here's Denison driving into the middle, and he can't get there.
- 1:57:26His Baltimore defensive line is not to be pushed around,
- 1:57:30but it'll be third and goal with Cook Barnes, Herman and Dutton digging in to stop that thrust by Denison.
- 1:57:36Stabach, by the way, who might be throwing here despite the short yard, on third down, is 15 out of 21.
- 1:57:42Two TDs, 280 yards, had a couple of passes intercepted, but the Cowboys were able to overcome that.
- 1:57:50The nice thing about the Cowboys is, you know, in this situation, they're very unpredictable.
- 1:57:55It's hard to tell what they're allowed to do.
- 1:57:57They're not going to let them out here with some kind of a run fake in play action.
- 1:58:00The rookie Aloys Blackwell is in the backfield now for the Dallas Cowboys, Newhouse and Denison with him.
- 1:58:07Third and goal from a yard away, and here's Stabach throwing touchdown.
- 1:58:13It was shot by the tight end, Jay Staldy.
- 1:58:17You know, and the thing about, they were in a strong run formation, double tight,
- 1:58:21with an unbalanced full house backfield, but they ran the play action pass, simulated the run,
- 1:58:28and of course it was beautifully thrown to the tight end, touchdown.
- 1:58:33Well-conceived play by the Dallas Cowboys.
- 1:58:35Roger Stabach to their fine second-shrink tight end, Jay Staldy, number 87.
- 1:58:42Third touchdown pass of the night for Stabach. His first week statistics are going to be good.
- 1:58:47Here is Waters holding and Septien cooking, kicking the ball, and that's good.
- 1:58:52And that makes it 35-to-nothing with 2.49 remaining here in the third quarter.
- 1:58:58You know, Septien's getting the ball through there, Jack, but he's looking a lot quicker than he should,
- 1:59:04and he's going to have some trouble during the course of the season if he's not careful.
- 1:59:07You know, and you mentioned after he missed the 19-yard field goal attempt earlier that he was lazy on the kick.
- 1:59:13That was the last time tonight that he failed a really thumping.
- 1:59:17Yeah, you have to attack the football. I don't care where you take it from, you have to attack it.
- 1:59:21And that's a great thing about the great kicker we had at Kansas City on Stenerud.
- 1:59:25Ray Nitsky, Weview Bank, Lance Alworth, Larry Wilson, Duffy Layman, the class of 78,
- 1:59:30joined the 93 other enshrines and numerous displays for depicting the history of pro football
- 1:59:36at the Full Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio.
- 1:59:39From 9-to-5 daily, you can view the evolution of professional football from its first player in 1892 to the Card League of 2018.
- 1:59:47The Full Football Hall of Fame, located just off Interstate 77 in Canton, Ohio,
- 1:59:52line of visits home. The preceding was the message from the National Football League.
- 1:59:57That drives 71 yards and 7 plays to 3 minutes and 13 seconds.
- 2:00:02The deep men for the Colts, they've been back there frequently tonight, Marshall Johnson, Joe Washington,
- 2:00:07and Don McCauley. The kick is high and taken by Johnson inside the tenets quickly to the 20,
- 2:00:12to the 25, to the 30 yard line and tackled there.
- 2:00:16And it was Dave Stahls who made that stop with 240 left in the third quarter.
- 2:00:22Looks bad for the Colts, Hank. You can't see anything, any indicators on the field
- 2:00:27that's going to change any of the momentum of this game.
- 2:00:30No, there's no way in the world, you hate to say that about a team at this stage of the game,
- 2:00:33but with the lack of offensive weapons that they have at this time and throughout the game,
- 2:00:38why it's going to be very tough for them to do anything, if they get back into the football game
- 2:00:42with a score of 35-0 in favor of the Dallas Cowboys.
- 2:00:46Mike Kirkman drives the rally his troops from his own 31 yard line, has Dowdy in motion
- 2:00:51and gives it to Roosevelt. Leakes goes over the right side, cuts it back and gets five.
- 2:00:56Ron Lee is indeed disqualified from this game. Leakes is in the backfield.
- 2:01:02Harvey Martin came all the way across the field to make that tackle from his defensive end position
- 2:01:06on the right side and Danny White loosens on the sideline and probably will enter the game
- 2:01:11the next time the Cowboys get the ball.
- 2:01:13Yeah, I'm sure he'll take over the next possession. Interesting statistic,
- 2:01:16Roger Stabach has completed 11 consecutive passes, ties his own club record.
- 2:01:21Very impressive evening by Roger Stabach.
- 2:01:24It would appear that he is through the way Danny White is loosening.
- 2:01:27Here is second and five for the Colts from their own 36 with two minutes remaining in the third quarter.
- 2:01:3135 to nothing Dallas, they give to Don McCauley. McCauley moves across the 41st half
- 2:01:37and to the 45 and 46 yard line. Don McCauley, Clifair is up from the safety spot to make the hit.
- 2:01:45This is kind of a game that you like very much as a coach and a coaching staff
- 2:01:48because it provides you with an opportunity to play a lot of young people late in the fourth quarter
- 2:01:53and during the fourth quarter and I'm sure this is what's going to happen.
- 2:01:56If things don't change dramatically for the Baltimore Colts, we'll see a lot of substitutions in the fourth quarter.
- 2:02:02In addition to tying his own record of 11 straight completions,
- 2:02:06Stabach's four out of his last nine have been for touchdown.
- 2:02:10Here's the first down for the Colts from their own 46, the first down pass,
- 2:02:14the Blitz has picked up, the pass is caught and then dropped into 10 complete.
- 2:02:18That's the rolling. Roger Carr had it and he was hit and coughed it up.
- 2:02:22As Aaron Kyle nailed him, incomplete is the call.
- 2:02:26You know, Jack, that was the first play action pass that Mike Kirkland has thrown so far in the ball game.
- 2:02:32It was well executed, he jumped up into the pocket well, it was completed and then dropped
- 2:02:37and they rolled it in incomplete to Roger Carr, number 81.
- 2:02:40They did a good job of picking up the Blitz angst ramp.
- 2:02:42Yes, they did, especially from play action.
- 2:02:45Now the ball at the 46th and it's second down in 10, 64,000 plus in Texas stadium,
- 2:02:52where the New York Giants will be playing next Sunday.
- 2:03:00Here is the second down call by Kirkland.
- 2:03:06Cowboy is mixing it up up front. Here is the running play with McCauley going over the right side,
- 2:03:11leaks the ball back, putting clear of the way for him. McCauley is tackled.
- 2:03:16Very close to the line of scrimmage, he gained only a yard, it will be 3-9.
- 2:03:22It's not much fun being a quarterback when you're down 35-0 and especially if you're a young quarterback
- 2:03:28and participating in the first game.
- 2:03:30And the offensive line of the course being manhandled pretty well right now.
- 2:03:34Yeah, they are, really are.
- 2:03:36And here again it goes right back to what we talked about when you got 35 points ahead of a team.
- 2:03:41They know you have to sort of get back in the ball game and it's tough.
- 2:03:44Kirkland's pass is dropped by Don McCauley coming out of the backfield.
- 2:03:48He was well covered by Thomas Henderson and he dropped the ball and David Lee is in the kick again.
- 2:03:54You don't see that happen. Don McCauley is an excellent receiver last year,
- 2:03:57caught 51 passes for 977 yards, a lot of yardage.
- 2:04:04David Lee will stand inside his 35 yard line and kick the ball to Butts Johnson once again.
- 2:04:11Less than a minute remaining in the third quarter, 35 seconds.
- 2:04:15The snap is good. No pressure. Lee kicks it away, a line drive. Johnson comes up and takes it on the 18 to the 20,
- 2:04:23to the 25, to the 30 yard line and gets to the 32 or 3 and is driven back by Darrell Loos, the linebacker.
- 2:04:31Well, that's what the ball looked like when it was on a trailing line. It got down there very fast in it.
- 2:04:35David won that ball a little higher than he got at that time.
- 2:04:38And let's check the Dallas offensive unit and his stopback coming back in there.
- 2:04:45No, he is not. Anyway, third year veteran from Arizona State is into the game.
- 2:04:54Scott Laidlaw appears for the first time. Doug Denison is the other running back.
- 2:05:0024 seconds remaining in the third quarter and Danny White gets some playings out.
- 2:05:08Golden Richards is in the lineup and he is foot left.
- 2:05:12On first down, Danny White as the ball gives it to Denison, goes outside, cuts it back up,
- 2:05:18moves across the 35 to the 40 yard line, big yardage for the Cowboys and that one.
- 2:05:23Simonini and Bruce Laid were the tacklers and that probably will be the final play of the third quarter.
- 2:05:31Cowboys have plenty of reserves. All of home have seen quite a bit of action.
- 2:05:37Three, two, one, there's the gun. And that's the end of the third quarter with a score.
- 2:05:43Now the Cowboys 35 and the Colts nothing.
- 2:05:48Here's Barsman and McCormick for Quantel Business Computers.
- 2:05:52Today we're talking with another businessman. Sir, will you tell us about your company?
- 2:05:56Yes, I'm in farm animal clothing.
- 2:05:58Oh, you sell farm animal clothing?
- 2:06:00That's right. Little hats for chickens, bull boots, pig mats.
- 2:06:03Well, that's extraordinary. Tell me, how do you keep track of these items?
- 2:06:06That's a very good question. I used to have a great deal of trouble keeping track of pig mass sales figures in my moose handler inventory.
- 2:06:13You might say you were on the horns of a dilemma.
- 2:06:15Well said. Anyway, then I installed a Quantel Business Computer and brought everything under control.
- 2:06:20But Quantel Business Computer sounds expensive.
- 2:06:22Absolutely not. I lease my Quantel Computer for a poultry $345 a month.
- 2:06:28Excuse me, but don't you mean a paltry $345 a month?
- 2:06:32No, I mean poultry. Because as far as I'm concerned, 345 a month for a Quantel Computer is chicken feed.
- 2:06:39For Quantel Information, call toll-free 800-227-1894 and California call 415-783-3410. Collect.
- 2:06:51Thanks, Graham and Jack Buck with you for CBS from the Texas Stadium.
- 2:06:5515 minutes of football remaining. The Cowboys on top. Comfortably 35 to nothing.
- 2:07:00Next Monday night, the Denver Broncos will play at Minnesota and we'll have the pleasure of sending the game your way.
- 2:07:06Now we're going to see the same Baltimore club on Monday night the 18th of September as they play at New England.
- 2:07:12You know, you strive for balance offensively. Any time that you play, Dallas has really had a remarkable balanced offense.
- 2:07:21They have 290 yards rushing, 281 passing so far for a total of 490.
- 2:07:27About Baltimore Colts have 78 yards rushing, 36 yards passing for 114 yards.
- 2:07:33The ball at the moment belongs to the Cowboys second down and two from their own 42.
- 2:07:38Danny White in there at quarterback. Scott Laidlaw is in the backfield with him.
- 2:07:45Along with Doug Denison.
- 2:07:49Golden Richards as a wide receiver and on second down. Richard splits to the left into the eye of formation with Denison the tail back.
- 2:07:58White with a long count gives it to the up man, the full back Laidlaw and he drives forward as apparently a first down shy of the 45 yard line.
- 2:08:07With Laird and Joe Ehrman making the tackle in the Baltimore defensive unit, they spent too much time on the playing field.
- 2:08:13I directed some attention early in the game about the fact that Tom Lannery was concerned about his running game during the preseason.
- 2:08:19In fact, they went into the Houston Euler game with the idea that they would not worry about the passing but just try to work in the running game.
- 2:08:25I think from this stage of the game on in the fourth quarter, you'll see them try to run the ball of an awful lot and not put the ball in the air too much.
- 2:08:33It is a first down at the 44 yard line of the Cowboys.
- 2:08:39And they use a wing formation, a slot formation to the left.
- 2:08:44And White gives to Doug Denison when deep cut it back up, cut to the line of scrimmage and gained only two yards on the play and the middle linebacker, Simon Iney, who is annually one of the leading tacklers, made the hit.
- 2:08:56He was helped out by Lloyd Mumford, the cornerback.
- 2:08:59Ray, 14 minutes left.
- 2:09:01Ray, feel right. The great tackle in yesteryear for the Dallas Cowboys and still playing some of his playing right tackle at this time.
- 2:09:08He's had some problems with his knee. He's a 12 year pro 33 years old from Fort Valley State, but he's in there playing right tackle right now for Andi Fedri.
- 2:09:19Second down and eighth. Oldham comes into the defensive backfield for the Colts with the middle linebacker, Simon Iney out of there.
- 2:09:25And on second and eighth, Danny White hands off to Denison on a draw play. He goes across midfield and he is very close to a first down.
- 2:09:33Doug Denison with a good carry and Sanders shiver the linebacker finally stopped it.
- 2:09:40Let's see where they mark it with regard to a first down. It appears to be a couple of inches short.
- 2:09:46Making a third down. That's what it is at the 46th of Baltimore.
- 2:09:5513-23 left in the game. 35 to nothing. The Cowboys are on top.
- 2:10:04Two tight ends are in there. Dupree and Salty as the Cowboys try to get the first down.
- 2:10:13Layed Law and Denison are in the backfield.
- 2:10:17Danny White at quarterback sneaks it. He's big enough to get the short yard as needed and he did to the 45 yard line of Baltimore.
- 2:10:24They made some changes offensively. Dallas has in their field positions. They're running back to receivers.
- 2:10:29J. Talby is playing tight end. But the linemen are basically the same. Pat Dunovan is playing left tackle.
- 2:10:34Herbie Scott is playing left guard. Fitzgerald number 62 still the center. Burton Lawless is playing right guard.
- 2:10:40And of course the only change is Ray Fiori. Of course he's played for a long but it's not much of a change.
- 2:10:45Ball of the 45 yard line of Baltimore. First down for the Dallas Cowboys.
- 2:10:5012-37 remaining in the contest. And the clock moving as Danny White gets under center. They run out of the eye of formation.
- 2:10:58They give it to the tail back Dennis and he blew it right up the middle and he caught Baltimore in a stunning situation and picked up a quick four yards on the play.
- 2:11:07It's very obvious that they're going to continue to try to run the ball and many times in this situation you tell your team with this kind of a lead,
- 2:11:14you really want to work on your running game and don't put, don't pump the ball up at all just to stuff it full of sand and run it.
- 2:11:20Total yards now in the game. Dallas 494 Baltimore 113. So the Cowboys will go over the 500 yards air long.
- 2:11:29You know consistently year in and year out there one or two in total offense and they're going to start the season in the National Football League and the National Conference again being the number one team offensively.
- 2:11:38First down.
- 2:11:39I'm sure the same way defensively.
- 2:11:40First down at the Baltimore 41 and the fake to Dennis and the pass out here to Golden Richard.
- 2:11:49He was all alone out there had no blocking cut the ball was knocked down immediately picked up a couple of yards and Darryl loose got to him in a big hurry.
- 2:11:571130 remaining in the game.
- 2:12:02Mike Hakeman. You know as a fine young linebacker for the Dallas team and they like him very much.
- 2:12:11I, you know, it's amazing what depth they have.
- 2:12:14I'm talking about the course of Dallas defense.
- 2:12:16I shouldn't be because they're on offense but I happen to think about his name because they like him very much.
- 2:12:20They're going to run some people in there.
- 2:12:22Hank, there is third down and four for the Cowboys and then the shotgun goes Danny White.
- 2:12:28This will be his second pass attempt. No, it's an inside handoff to Pearson.
- 2:12:32Pearson going around the left side breaks it for a first down but there's a flag as Drew Pearson was tackled at the 30 yard line of Baltimore.
- 2:12:43And it looks like that play might come back.
- 2:12:46We have a holding call against the Cowboys stopping the clock with 1051 remaining in the game.
- 2:12:52They can come at you in so many different ways out of this, out of these Dallas offensive formation.
- 2:12:58Yes, they and they shift and of course I mentioned earlier they shift and create formations.
- 2:13:02You utilize the man in motion.
- 2:13:04And I mentioned earlier they really haven't shown a lot of the tendencies that they've expressed in other games.
- 2:13:11Holding, there's the sign by the official.
- 2:13:16Here was Herbert Scott, the offensive guard who was holding on that inside handoff to Drew Pearson, bringing the ball back, making a third down.
- 2:13:27And they're trying to break some tendencies.
- 2:13:29Normally from the spread formation they're going to pass the ball that time they ran it.
- 2:13:32They want to make sure other teams see that they will also run from the spread along with throwing the football.
- 2:13:37They're back in the spread formation again, which goes back to the basic rule of third and four plus they'll get into the spread.
- 2:13:42Third down and nine now from the 44 of Baltimore. Danny White back to throw.
- 2:13:47Screens it out here and it is caught by Pearson.
- 2:13:49Chase from behind, he gets away and he's blasted it out of bounds.
- 2:13:53And he has the first down.
- 2:13:56You know it's amazing.
- 2:13:57You know it's amazing.
- 2:13:58Herbert's got two of them, but not until the Cowboys pick up another first down and they're not sitting on the ball at all.
- 2:14:02It's amazing. It's amazing how often they throw the ball, they get the ball, the Preston Pearson from the spread formation.
- 2:14:08That's who they like to hit and they consistently get the ball to them. It's just remarkable.
- 2:14:13It's 35 to nothing now. There's been no scoring here in the third quarter.
- 2:14:17The score was 21 to nothing at the half in favor of the Cowboys. They've added two TDs. They're on their way again.
- 2:14:23Ball is at the Baltimore 35 with the first down.
- 2:14:28White and company come out.
- 2:14:32Laidlaw is the up back, the full back in the eye. Denison is the tail back. They run out of the eye formation.
- 2:14:39And here's Danny White giving to Denison who changes direction, tries to get outside and cannot do it.
- 2:14:45He was chased by the corner of the safety man, Bruce Laird, who then got the help he needed from the linebacker, Darryl Luce, to make the hit on Denison.
- 2:14:54Denison, about whom we've been talking quite a bit, is Danny White with a give-all. He was hit, stopped, fumbled, recovered it himself.
- 2:15:02He ran into a stone wall that time, the left side, cooking barns up front for Baltimore.
- 2:15:08It is fourth down and set the end comes in to try to add some more points for the Cowboys.
- 2:15:18There have been five touchdowns by the Cowboys. No field goals with a missed attempt earlier.
- 2:15:28Charlie Waters will spot the ball on the 35, so set the end will have to boot at 45 yards.
- 2:15:37One thing that's very important with a soccer-style kicker is the placement of the left foot. The heel must be even with the ball.
- 2:15:43Here's the kick. He's got a crack at it. It is no good. It's off to the left, and the ball will come back out to the line of scrimmage.
- 2:15:50A missed by Septien, and you wonder how much they're going to miss, Sephrin Herrera this year and the Dallas Cowboys schedule.
- 2:15:57We have 829 remaining in the game with a score of Dallas 35, the Colts, nothing. Let's take time.
- 2:16:04There are the good banks, there are the better banks, and then there is TSB, the Superbank, Troy Savings, an organization dedicated to being the best financial institution in the business.
- 2:16:17Not the biggest, the best, offering super certificates of deposit and passbook savings, all paying the highest interest rate permitted under current regulations.
- 2:16:26Super mortgage and home improvement loans, super all free checking accounts with overdraft privileges available, super locations, not empty 100, but centrally located offices with drive-up facilities,
- 2:16:38super convenient banking hours with all offices open Friday evenings and Saturday mornings, and most importantly, super service from super people, experienced, friendly, interested, and professional people.
- 2:16:51Yes, there are a lot of banks, but this is a lot of bank. TSB, the Superbank, Troy Savings, member FDIC, an equal housing lender.
- 2:17:07Well, is the same old Cowboys or should I say Hank Stramon, even better cowboy team we're witnessing tonight?
- 2:17:14Well, I don't think he ever stayed the same. He's either going to get better or he's going to get worse, and I really think the Cowboys are going to be better.
- 2:17:21Interesting stat again on Dorsett. He rushed 15 times, 147 yards, a 9.8 average. Most yards gained in the National Football League this weekend. He caught three passes for 101 yards and one touchdown.
- 2:17:32Here's Kirkland back to throwing first down, and he gets it out here to his rookie tight end, Reese McCall. McCall with a good grab, then goes out of bounds as he was bumped out
- 2:17:43of a substantial game for the Baltimore Colts. You know, they like this young player from the University of Auburn. He's 6'6", weighs about 235, and they think he's going to blossom and develop into one of the fine tight ends in the league.
- 2:17:55He's been playing behind Mac Austin, but Austin, a veteran now, been around for quite a few years, and they expect McCall to play quite a bit. He picked up seven yards on that reception from Mike Kirkland, and it is second down and three.
- 2:18:08The ball at the 34 yard line of the Colts who show motion with Glenn Dowdy. Here is the toss to the tailback. McCauley gets to the 35 and gained very little on that one as he was stopped by Bob Bruning, the middle linebacker.
- 2:18:20Well, the Cowboys may have changed some personnel on offense, and they did, but they're staying right with it with this defensive unit.
- 2:18:26Yes, they are. They surely are. And you know, interesting offensively, the Baltimore Colts, the three or four passes at times, they've been able to complete passes, they've all been, passes that were thrown on the move with moving the pocket, and I'm sure they're going to try to do more of that in the remaining part of this football game.
- 2:18:46Kirkland gives the ball to McCauley Colts, supporting across the 37 yard line. He is really good. He knows where he has to go.
- 2:18:54Yes, he does. And you give him any kind of a crack and he's going to make some things and get the most out of the play.
- 2:19:01Less than seven minutes remaining in the game, 6.50 left, and the score is the Cowboys 35 to Colts nothing.
- 2:19:07A Baltimore first down, one of the few that they have on the entire evening. That is seven for them now.
- 2:19:16The ball is, and a first down from Mike Kirkland, who is getting a world of experience tonight. Field intercepted.
- 2:19:25Intercepted by Kirkland Harris, and the Cowboys get the ball with 6.17 remaining.
- 2:19:33The Harris came away with that ball. It was a dying duck up in the air and Harris only had to come back and catch it. Well, it's a timeout with 6.17 remaining in the game.
- 2:19:46A timeout on the field with the score. Cowboys 35 and Baltimore nothing.
- 2:19:51The Dallas Cowboys, even though they've made some substitutions offensively, they continue to dominate this football game.
- 2:19:57Both offensively and defensively there, we just saw an interception by Cliff Harris. The ball was thrown a little bit too short.
- 2:20:06Not much of a spiral. He had severe pressure. But you know, I really kind of like the looks of this Mike Kirkland.
- 2:20:12He's getting quite a baptism tonight, but I think the experience that he's gaining in this game today as he goes down the road during, of course, the long 16 game schedule,
- 2:20:21is going to prove to be very invaluable to him. Don't be deceived also by the score of this game because the Dallas Cowboys, even though they're dominating this game, 35 to nothing,
- 2:20:31make no mistake about the fact that the Baltimore Coles are a very fine football team. This is a great illustration of what happens when you lose a great performer like Bert Jones.
- 2:20:40But they'll be back. He'll be back in the lineup, hopefully in about five weeks, and I'm sure he'll bring this team back around as a kind of a personality that they have enjoyed in the past.
- 2:20:52One of the advantages of a long season, and this is going to be a long one for all of the team, 16 games in the regular season, is that Baltimore, without a guy like Bert Jones,
- 2:21:01can lose two or three games early and still have ample time to come back and win their division.
- 2:21:05Yes, they can survive it. It's not like the situation we had in New Orleans where we lost our great quarterback Archie Manning.
- 2:21:11He only played nine games for us in 28 games the last two years, and it really hurts you tremendously.
- 2:21:16Here is the give by Danny White to his fullback, Scott Laidlaw. He tried to crack it up the middle and got only a yard.
- 2:21:25The Baltimore team will entertain the Dolphins next Sunday, and the Cowboys travel to the Giants, so we'll have two winners meeting early next Sunday.
- 2:21:33Meanwhile, a week from the night, Monday night, we're going to be in Minnesota, and the Vikings will be trying to get their first win,
- 2:21:40and they'll have to do it at the expense of the Denver Broncos. Broncos won yesterday, and we hope you'll tune us in next Monday night here on CBS Radio.
- 2:21:48The injured player coming off, but appearing to be quite all right now, is Joe Irman.
- 2:21:52The defensive tackled for the Colts with less than six minutes remaining in the game, and the Cowboys on top 35-0.
- 2:22:00Second down and nine, four Dallas from their own 26, Golden Richards to the right, puts Johnson to the left,
- 2:22:07and the tight end is Jay Saldy. He's on the left side. Laidlaw is the fullback. He ships from the pro set.
- 2:22:15Danny White takes the ball, gives it to Scott Denison. He goes over the right side, and he is grabbed by a one-foot.
- 2:22:21Herb Orbus is in there defensively for the Colts. Got him and wouldn't turn him loose.
- 2:22:25You know, Jim Cooper is now playing center for the Dallas Cowboys, number 61-65, 250, a two-year guy from Temple.
- 2:22:33They like him very much. He's a backup center and also a backup guard. They think he's a great prospect,
- 2:22:38and they anticipate a great career for Jim Cooper, number 61.
- 2:22:44Tom Randall has been getting some playing time. He's left guard for the Cowboys, the rookie out of Iowa.
- 2:22:50Cowboys have only five rookies on their team this year. They run out of the shotgun now on third down and eighth,
- 2:22:56and Danny White is back to throw. Scoots it to the sidelines, and it is caught for a first down out to the 42-yard line.
- 2:23:05The ball hauled in by puts Johnson with a dandy reception, though covered by Bruce Laird and Doug Meddles.
- 2:23:11You know, the other interesting thing about the substitutions, they have Andy Federick, who was playing a right tackle initially
- 2:23:18and started the game at that position, is now playing left tackle. So they're preparing for things that might happen during a course of the season
- 2:23:24so they can get good playing time in a variety of positions.
- 2:23:27And it's good for the Cowboys to have Rayfuel Wright playing. He underwent a knee operation, but he's in there at the right offensive tackle spot.
- 2:23:34They're playing, of course, without Ralph Neely, who has retired, so they can use that extra man at the position.
- 2:23:42A first down at the 43-yard line of Dallas, Danny White gives to Doug Denison, trying to get outside.
- 2:23:48He gets to the sideline, cuts it back in, crosses midfield, makes a couple of tackles. He's down to the 40 and now the 35-yard line of Baltimore.
- 2:23:55Scott Denison finally stopped by Doug Meddles, and it's a weary band of Baltimore defenders chasing the Cowboys now.
- 2:24:03I tell you, Scott Laidlaw made a nice block on that play also to provide a Denison with the opportunity to scamper down the sideline for the big game.
- 2:24:11Tell us on the scoreboard that Mr. and Mrs. Stabach is celebrating their 13th anniversary today.
- 2:24:17It's going to be a happy day domestically and professionally for the Stabachs.
- 2:24:2235-to-nothing Cowboys with 4-18 remaining in the game.
- 2:24:26Roger's one of the class people in professional football. They illustrate this point right before the game.
- 2:24:31We were in a locker room and they had a lot of things to do, but he provided us with a few minutes for the interview with a lot of class and poise,
- 2:24:37and he's one of the big league guys in the league.
- 2:24:39Here's Danny White handing off to the pullback, Scott Laidlaw, and he drives inside the 35-yard line down to the 32,
- 2:24:46for a pickup of three for Dallas, putting us under the four-minute mark in time.
- 2:24:51The score remains 35-to-nothing Dallas. They were ahead 21-to-nothing at the half, and some of the 64,000 have departed Texas Stadium.
- 2:25:00They're early convinced that their home club has a victory under their belts, and it'll be a long trip home for Baltimore.
- 2:25:07Second down and seventh.
- 2:25:10Danny White out of the eye of formation now has Alloy's Blackwell in the backfield,
- 2:25:18and he ends the ball, Laidlaw goes over the left side for a couple of yards.
- 2:25:22Dallas not really playing wide open football now, sitting on it, running the clock down, and doing a good job of that.
- 2:25:28The ball is to the 30 of Baltimore, third and five.
- 2:25:34I'm sure everybody's aware of the fact that the plays are sent in from the sideline.
- 2:25:37Tom Landry and his fine staffs send in every play, and you know the advantage of that.
- 2:25:42Jack is a fact that once you call the play, your whole coaching staff is aware of what's coming.
- 2:25:47They can look at the point of attack, they can look at the back side, and they're fully aware of what's happened on every play.
- 2:25:53There's 35 and a wobbly pass, but Danny White, which had been deflected, was almost intercepted by Doug Nettles.
- 2:26:00He couldn't hang on to it, the ball fell in complete, and it'll be fourth down.
- 2:26:05They bring in Septien, and I'm sure one of the reasons they're doing it here is to try to determine his kicking range in game situations.
- 2:26:14Raphael is a very emotional young fella, and it's important for him to, I think, get off to a good start and kick one of these field goals for Dallas,
- 2:26:24because there's going to be emotional strain on him if he doesn't succeed.
- 2:26:28There will be a 48 yard attempt. Charlie Waters will get it down, handle the low snaps, Septien boosts it.
- 2:26:34It's got a chance. It's good.
- 2:26:36Four points for Dallas. It's 38 to nothing.
- 2:26:40That's a great play, a great kick for Raphael. Very important kick for him, but here again, it's an illustration of the kind of range he has.
- 2:26:48He's got a strong leg.
- 2:26:49He missed from 19 yards, he missed from 45 yards out, he hit one for 48.
- 2:26:54And now with the score, Dallas 38 and the Colts nothing. Let's take that off.
- 2:26:59There's a time and place for everything. The time to make a great deal on a new car is now, and the place is at your Buick dealers.
- 2:27:07Talk to him about a 1978 Riviera, for example. Tell him sure you like the luxury, but what you're really interested in right now is the price.
- 2:27:16Then watch him sharpen his pencil. Buick Riviera. Yes, you can. Right now at your Buick dealers.
- 2:27:22Yes, you can. Yes, you can.
- 2:27:34We have 241 remaining in this football game. Hank Stram and Jack Buck with you for CVS.
- 2:27:40And we're happy that American Forces Radio is carrying this game to our service women and service men around the world.
- 2:27:4638 to nothing is the score in favor of the Cowboys. Baltimore missed a couple of chances early.
- 2:27:52Couldn't capitalize on turnovers by the Cowboys and have been kept off the scoreboard all night.
- 2:27:57Septien will kick it. And the same men are back.
- 2:28:02With Johnson Washington and McCauley waiting for the kick.
- 2:28:08There it is by Septien and it is a strong one carrying down to the goal line. It is taken on the goal line by Marshall Johnson.
- 2:28:16He's up the middle to the 20 to the 25. High steps to the 30 to the 35. And out to the 40 yard line and he made Hank Stram happy by putting the ball in his left arm while running down the left side.
- 2:28:26Yes, he did. And he's getting a lot of practice at kick the run on those kicks back, but he's a good looking prospect.
- 2:28:31And let me say again that I don't think the fans around the country should be deceived by what the score is here tonight.
- 2:28:3838 to nothing. The Colts are still a very good football team and I think they'll prove that when they get their people back.
- 2:28:43But you know, it's as typical as I mentioned earlier that it is very difficult to operate officially against a great team like the Dallas Cowboys when you're not a full strength.
- 2:28:52The Colts are at their own 42 yard line. Mike Kirkland who has played all night. Is that the quarterback spot?
- 2:28:58He has Roosevelt leaks in the backfield along with Don McCauley and here is the running play and McCauley coming to the left is across the 45 yard line and really crumbled by other the linebacker and Randy Hughes.
- 2:29:14That was Roosevelt leaks carrying the ball and Don McCauley blocking for him got out to the 49 yard line and it'll be second down and three.
- 2:29:21Now we'll have the two minute warning before we have any further action.
- 2:29:28The whistle sounds in the two minute warning will be given to both benches.
- 2:29:34Two minutes left and a pause in the action with the score of the Cowboys 38 and Baltimore nothing. Let's take time out.
- 2:29:42The day is done. It's time to let it go. It's the moment to unwind.
- 2:29:53So dead they go but they should stay alive. And for the king of beers can settle back and please yourself.
- 2:30:05No matter what you do. No matter when or where you know a glass of blood is like an easy chair.
- 2:30:21When you say you said it all when you say you said it all when you say you said it all and I was a bush St. Louis.
- 2:30:46We have but two minutes remaining in this football game in Texas with the Cowboys leading 38 to nothing.
- 2:30:51Hank Stramman Jack Buck with you for CBS. The ball is in possession of the Baltimore Colts.
- 2:30:57They have a second down and free situation from their own 49 yard line second down and free.
- 2:31:04After my the way Mike Kirkman has held in there tonight.
- 2:31:07Yes he has. He really has. He shows he shows a lot of boys. He's a good athlete and the playing time even though it's an
- 2:31:13interesting day. The ball is in possession of the Baltimore Colts.
- 2:31:17The way the players are using cars will be very helpful to him and the ball of all Colts.
- 2:31:21So you want to when you project the season on a 15 more game basis he hands off to a ball of all the more newcomer.
- 2:31:27Don Hardiman used to play with Houston was obtained from Tampa Bay and he carried over the right side and picked up a
- 2:31:33first down for the Colts 142 remaining in the game.
- 2:31:37and three in this period and I
- 2:31:40believe they could have scored
- 2:31:41a heck of a lot more points than
- 2:31:42they now possess.
- 2:31:44First down from the forty seven
- 2:31:46yard line Kirkman is back to
- 2:31:47throw.
- 2:31:48He has chased he looks he runs.
- 2:31:50He throws and it is caught for
- 2:31:52a first down at the thirty five
- 2:31:54yard line by Reese McCall the
- 2:31:56rookie and he is dumped in a
- 2:31:57hurry by the linebacker Guy
- 2:31:59Brown who's playing in place of
- 2:32:00D.D. Lewis who was ejected from
- 2:32:03this football game.
- 2:32:04Now one oh five remaining and
- 2:32:09Baltimore into their two minute
- 2:32:11drill Kirkland back to throw on
- 2:32:13first down he has it incomplete
- 2:32:15and just passed the outstretched
- 2:32:17arms of the linebacker Mike
- 2:32:19Higman as he intended it for
- 2:32:21Marshall Johnson stops the clock
- 2:32:23with fifty nine seconds remaining
- 2:32:25in the game Dallas the Dallas
- 2:32:28Cowboys of a total offense of
- 2:32:30five hundred and eighty yards the
- 2:32:31second best in the history of
- 2:32:32their club how many points you
- 2:32:33think they could have had.
- 2:32:34Oh it's no telling you they got
- 2:32:36thirty eight and they could have
- 2:32:37had fifty the ball is at the
- 2:32:39thirty five yard line of the
- 2:32:40Cowboys Baltimore would like to
- 2:32:42score some points before they
- 2:32:43start the long trip home.
- 2:32:45Randy Burke is in as a wide
- 2:32:46receiver he's a second year man
- 2:32:48now from Kentucky wearing number
- 2:32:51eighty four for the Baltimore
- 2:32:52Club and on second down Kirkland
- 2:32:55is back to throw from the pocket
- 2:32:57he throws and there's his tight
- 2:32:59end all along at the fifty to
- 2:33:01the fifty five touchdown.
- 2:33:03Now that he can get any bump of
- 2:33:04the ball.
- 2:33:05Oh my.
- 2:33:06And it is a touch back.
- 2:33:07Can you believe that that's an
- 2:33:08incredible turn of events in
- 2:33:10it.
- 2:33:11Kirkland threw the ball on the
- 2:33:13money to his tight end Reese
- 2:33:15McCall was all alone outside the
- 2:33:17ten he caught it.
- 2:33:18He was hit inside the five
- 2:33:19struggle into the end zone
- 2:33:20crossed the goal line but did
- 2:33:22not have the ball when he crossed
- 2:33:24the goal line.
- 2:33:25It was recovered in the end zone
- 2:33:26by the linebacker Mike Higman
- 2:33:28and it is a touch back.
- 2:33:29It's typical of what happens if
- 2:33:30you don't if you make the
- 2:33:32reception and put the ball away
- 2:33:33very firmly.
- 2:33:34I think he was very happy about
- 2:33:36making the touchdown and forgot
- 2:33:37to take the ball with him.
- 2:33:39But when things go bad they really
- 2:33:41go bad don't they.
- 2:33:42And the ball comes out to the
- 2:33:43twenty yard line it belongs to
- 2:33:45the Cowboys with forty seven
- 2:33:46seconds remaining in the game
- 2:33:48had McCall just crossed the goal
- 2:33:50line with the ball in his
- 2:33:51possession it would have been a
- 2:33:52TD but he lost it just before he
- 2:33:54got there and the Cowboys still
- 2:33:56have their shutout thirty eight
- 2:33:58to nothing forty seven seconds
- 2:34:00remaining in the game Danny
- 2:34:02White at cornerback at the
- 2:34:03quarterback spot he gives to the
- 2:34:05up back laid law who gained only
- 2:34:07a yard and I don't think anybody
- 2:34:08will be anxious to stop the clock
- 2:34:10about one more play and that'll
- 2:34:12be it Fred Cook number seventy
- 2:34:15two who really got good
- 2:34:16penetration on the play almost
- 2:34:18tore his head off before he got
- 2:34:20the handoff but he went over the
- 2:34:21top and missed one more play and
- 2:34:24that'll be about it to repeat
- 2:34:25fall ball more held the Cowboys
- 2:34:27scoreless in the first quarter
- 2:34:29the trail twenty one to nothing
- 2:34:30at the half Cowboys came up with
- 2:34:33fourteen in the third period
- 2:34:34and they've scored three here in
- 2:34:36the final fifteen minutes we're
- 2:34:37down to thirteen seconds clock
- 2:34:39running the ball be snapped Danny
- 2:34:41White gives it a laid law again
- 2:34:42he moves across the twenty five
- 2:34:44he's tackled at the twenty seven
- 2:34:46the clock continues to run and
- 2:34:48that's the opener for the Colts
- 2:34:50and the Cowboys with Dallas
- 2:34:52running it thirty eight to nothing
- 2:35:05will continue with our wrap up
- 2:35:06and just a moment here's how it
- 2:35:08went from a scoring standpoint
- 2:35:10in the first quarter it was zip
- 2:35:12zip nothing nothing Dallas scored
- 2:35:14twenty one points in the second
- 2:35:15quarter fourteen and a third at
- 2:35:17three points in the fourth won the
- 2:35:19football game very and early thirty
- 2:35:21eight to nothing this is how it
- 2:35:23happened it was twenty one or
- 2:35:24nothing at half time in the third
- 2:35:25quarter Dallas Drew Pearson caught
- 2:35:27a thirty eight yard touchdown pass
- 2:35:29from Roger Stalbach set the end made
- 2:35:31the kick and they got seven more
- 2:35:33points eight plays and seventy two
- 2:35:35yards in the third quarter
- 2:35:37Sally got a one yard pass from
- 2:35:40Roger Stalbach and set the end made
- 2:35:43the kick seventy seven one yards
- 2:35:45and seven plays and then set the
- 2:35:47end in the fourth quarter picked a
- 2:35:49forty eight yard field goal that
- 2:35:51made it thirty eight to nothing a
- 2:35:53very impressive will overwhelming
- 2:35:55win for the Dallas Cowboys but
- 2:35:57here again I mentioned this several
- 2:35:59times don't mistake them or mislead
- 2:36:01by the by the fact that the coast got
- 2:36:03beat like they did tonight they're a
- 2:36:05serious half
