- 1:15Speaker 1: have a host of things to discuss with you today,
- 1:17Speaker 1: but I want to start here. Every wide receiver seems
- 1:21Speaker 1: to be wanting a trade a whole bunch of wide
- 1:23Speaker 1: receivers now on the market that previously we didn't think
- 1:26Speaker 1: would be Do you think the Broncos will be actively
- 1:30Speaker 1: involved in any discussions for these guys, whether it's Davante Adams,
- 1:34Speaker 1: whether it's DK Metcalf, whether it's whoever that's on the
- 1:37Speaker 1: market right now, will they be actively involved?
- 1:40Speaker 4: Well, you know, actively, I bet they'll kick the tires.
- 1:45Speaker 4: I bet they will, whether they ever admit it or not.
- 1:47Speaker 4: They'll ask around. I mean Metcalf fits the physical profile
- 1:52Speaker 4: Sean Haydon Watson a receiver, so I mean he likes
- 1:57Speaker 4: the bigger receivers. So like the guys, yeah, at least
- 2:05Speaker 4: internally talk about. But you you're seeing now when you
- 2:10Speaker 4: ask gms.
- 2:11Speaker 2: About receivers, they just roll their eyes.
- 2:14Speaker 4: I mean they they want the ball more, they want
- 2:17Speaker 4: the ball better, they want more money, they want to trade.
- 2:20Speaker 4: I mean, they always seem to want something as a
- 2:24Speaker 4: position group, and I think I guess in my time
- 2:28Speaker 4: covering the league, I've done more, far more frustrated wide
- 2:32Speaker 4: receiver stories than I have any other position combined.
- 2:37Speaker 2: Uh.
- 2:37Speaker 4: You know, you don't even hear quarterbacks have this much
- 2:41Speaker 4: angst publicly as receivers do. And and you know again,
- 2:46Speaker 4: it's it's what you think the value is. Like they
- 2:49Speaker 4: le Broncos had no interest in the Deebo Samuel sweepstake,
- 2:53Speaker 4: So I guess if you do the math from there,
- 2:57Speaker 4: it would seem to have a pretty narrow view of
- 2:59Speaker 4: what they would be intrigued by in the veteran receiver market.
- 3:02Speaker 4: And I think health plays a big part. How healthy
- 3:06Speaker 4: are you? How much are you going to be on
- 3:08Speaker 4: the field.
- 3:09Speaker 3: Well, to me, I don't think anybody wanted Debo. I
- 3:14Speaker 3: mean if he goes for a fifth you know, I mean, look,
- 3:18Speaker 3: wide receivers, crack me up, Jeff. They are divas. You know,
- 3:22Speaker 3: a lot of them are they fight? You know, they
- 3:26Speaker 3: they complain that they're just they're hard to deal with. Man,
- 3:30Speaker 3: I don't know, it's just so you got to get
- 3:32Speaker 3: the right guy. Does that come through free agency? Does
- 3:36Speaker 3: that come through the draft? That'd rather have a homegrown guy,
- 3:39Speaker 3: you know, go out and pick one off the vine
- 3:42Speaker 3: that you can make into the guy that you want
- 3:44Speaker 3: to have to be honest.
- 3:45Speaker 4: With you, Yeah, And I you know, I think right
- 3:48Speaker 4: now they're actively trying to figure out a way to
- 3:50Speaker 4: get Courtland Sutton squared away. Too, So what would be
- 3:56Speaker 4: what would adding a free agent wide receiver due to that?
- 3:59Speaker 4: You know, I don't know, doesn't upset you know? And
- 4:02Speaker 4: Peyton talks a lot about makeup in chemistry and your
- 4:07Speaker 4: and your locker room and all of those things.
- 4:09Speaker 2: What's to do in your locker room if if you sign.
- 4:13Speaker 4: One of these guys, no matter how much they may
- 4:15Speaker 4: help you, for what you wouldn't give Courtland Sutton? You
- 4:19Speaker 4: know that type of thing. I think that is a consideration.
- 4:22Speaker 4: How big it consideration?
- 4:24Speaker 2: You know? I would I don't know that.
- 4:26Speaker 3: Jeff, we were talking a little bit earlier about Zach
- 4:29Speaker 3: Allen going into last year of his deal and but
- 4:31Speaker 3: he knows going.
- 4:31Speaker 1: To need to be paid as well.
- 4:33Speaker 3: Could you again reiterate what you think those guys should bring,
- 4:37Speaker 3: because Brett wants to pay Zach Allen is the third
- 4:39Speaker 3: highest paid in.
- 4:41Speaker 1: Defensive whatever it takes.
- 4:43Speaker 3: And you know what, I don't disagree with him, because
- 4:45Speaker 3: he's a peck of a cog piece. But could you
- 4:47Speaker 3: also blend that into how much hay you have to
- 4:51Speaker 3: make when you have a quarterback who's on a rookie
- 4:53Speaker 3: deal or not being paid forty million dollars a.
- 4:56Speaker 4: Year well, this is your This is any team's best
- 5:00Speaker 4: window to compete for it all is.
- 5:02Speaker 2: When you have your.
- 5:05Speaker 4: Established starter, who you think is your long term solution
- 5:09Speaker 4: on his rookie deal.
- 5:10Speaker 2: Now you know, teams have gone on to have.
- 5:13Speaker 4: Great success, you know, when the quarterbacks and the second deal,
- 5:16Speaker 4: the Patriots, the Chiefs, you know, even the Bills to
- 5:20Speaker 4: a certain extent.
- 5:21Speaker 2: Now you know with Allen on his but your.
- 5:25Speaker 4: Best window to do big things, you know quickly as
- 5:30Speaker 4: you can, is when you're when that quarterback's on the
- 5:33Speaker 4: rookie deal. So the Broncos clock has four years left,
- 5:37Speaker 4: you know, Max on bo Nicks's rookie deal.
- 5:40Speaker 2: So that's that's the window. And you know it's intriguing.
- 5:45Speaker 4: Because I mean, they were already facing it anyway, but
- 5:48Speaker 4: you know, Benito and Allen would come up at the
- 5:51Speaker 4: same time for free agency after this season, the twenty
- 5:55Speaker 4: five season, so that they're facing this all the way
- 6:00Speaker 4: through twenty twenty five. And they knew that before. And look,
- 6:06Speaker 4: the season Zach Allen had was a bargain for the
- 6:10Speaker 4: for the Broncos. Of course, if you're the player and
- 6:12Speaker 4: as representatives, you're gonna want a little something more. I mean,
- 6:17Speaker 4: than the metrics are you You were one of the
- 6:19Speaker 4: best players at your position in the league. You were
- 6:22Speaker 4: named an All Pro and your peers named your Pro
- 6:26Speaker 4: Bowl selection. So yeah, you're you're worth whatever you can get.
- 6:31Speaker 4: Uh and you showed what kind of player you are
- 6:35Speaker 4: and that you might still be an ascending player, which
- 6:38Speaker 4: is a which is always a coveted thing. So that
- 6:41Speaker 4: they they've got big decisions to make. You know, does
- 6:46Speaker 4: one of them get the franchise tag a year from now? Maybe,
- 6:49Speaker 4: you know, maybe that's a short term solution, but it
- 6:52Speaker 4: will be two of the biggest questions they have financially
- 6:56Speaker 4: until they make a decision who's getting the money and
- 7:00Speaker 4: how much.
- 7:01Speaker 1: So we are about a week away from free agency
- 7:04Speaker 1: opening up a little less than a week. Two years ago,
- 7:09Speaker 1: the Broncos spent a bunch of money. We're a huge
- 7:11Speaker 1: player early in free agency with McGlinchey and Ben Powers
- 7:14Speaker 1: and Zach Allen. Last year not really signed Brandon Jones
- 7:18Speaker 1: and that was maybe the only notable free agent signing.
- 7:22Speaker 1: What does this year look like. Do you think their
- 7:24Speaker 1: players early or is this gonna feel a lot more
- 7:27Speaker 1: like last year.
- 7:28Speaker 2: I think it could be a mix.
- 7:30Speaker 4: I think they could be players if they think it's
- 7:32Speaker 4: the right guy at the right price. I don't know
- 7:35Speaker 4: that they'll, you know, like they gave McGlinchey more than
- 7:39Speaker 4: anyone else would have. They probably gave Ben Powers more
- 7:43Speaker 4: than everybody else would have. I don't know that they'll
- 7:45Speaker 4: be that kind of player where they just put the
- 7:48Speaker 4: biggest number out there and go get it. I think
- 7:51Speaker 4: they'll be more we think this guy fits and here's
- 7:55Speaker 4: a pretty big number to go with it, and you're
- 7:58Speaker 4: hoping that the player thinks it's the best spot for him.
- 8:02Speaker 4: But I think it will be a mixture of both.
- 8:05Speaker 4: I don't think they will take nothing but big swings.
- 8:08Speaker 4: Their issue is and you know, it's stuff we don't
- 8:12Speaker 4: talk about or you know, if you're a fan, you
- 8:14Speaker 4: don't just bring the players.
- 8:16Speaker 2: You know, don't tell me the rest of this stuff.
- 8:18Speaker 4: But they've added voidable years to almost every deal they can,
- 8:23Speaker 4: so their wiggle room even though their cap room is pretty.
- 8:26Speaker 2: Good, their real life wiggle room is not.
- 8:30Speaker 4: So they've still got to be They got to get
- 8:34Speaker 4: them right again, like last year. They got to get
- 8:37Speaker 4: them all right because this bill will come, do you
- 8:42Speaker 4: know two three years from now, when they're trying to
- 8:44Speaker 4: figure out what they're gonna do with Benito when they're
- 8:47Speaker 4: trying to figure out what you're gonna do with Allen,
- 8:50Speaker 4: you know, and bo Nix's nine figure deal will be
- 8:53Speaker 4: waiting out there if he keeps playing like he did
- 8:56Speaker 4: as a rookie.
- 8:57Speaker 3: Just your boy Bred over here raised a very good
- 9:00Speaker 3: question yesterday. I thought it was fantastic and I want
- 9:03Speaker 3: you to maybe raise it to some gms around the
- 9:05Speaker 3: league or people you know. But it was a really
- 9:08Speaker 3: smart question about running backs, Brett.
- 9:09Speaker 2: Could you please reiterate, Well, I.
- 9:11Speaker 1: Was wondering, are we just are we in a running
- 9:13Speaker 1: back renaissance? Has the cyclical nature of how we view
- 9:16Speaker 1: that position come back around to they're important enough to
- 9:19Speaker 1: spend high end first round capital on again. And the
- 9:22Speaker 1: way I posed the question was this, if I told
- 9:25Speaker 1: you that I just I took Barry Sanders into a DeLorean. Okay,
- 9:30Speaker 1: so now you have twenty one year old Barry Sanders.
- 9:32Speaker 1: You know who he is, you know what kind of
- 9:34Speaker 1: career he has, that he's a Hall of famer. And
- 9:35Speaker 1: I implemented that guy in the draft where the the
- 9:38Speaker 1: gms across the league knew exactly the player they were getting,
- 9:41Speaker 1: was a Hall of Famer for ten years. Would he
- 9:43Speaker 1: be the first overall draft pick.
- 9:46Speaker 2: This year?
- 9:47Speaker 1: This year?
- 9:48Speaker 4: This year, he would because there's no QB. Okay, yeah,
- 9:52Speaker 4: well no consensus QB. Now you know, cam Ward is
- 9:55Speaker 4: closing in on the majority, but not like a consensus
- 10:00Speaker 4: like Joe Burrow at number one or Peyton Manning at
- 10:03Speaker 4: number one.
- 10:03Speaker 2: Not like that.
- 10:04Speaker 4: But you know, I think there would still be the
- 10:08Speaker 4: outlier GM or two who would fight you and say
- 10:11Speaker 4: value and a lot of that. But I was saying
- 10:17Speaker 4: years ago, it's time for teams to start despite the
- 10:23Speaker 4: fact no one calls you a genius for running the ball,
- 10:25Speaker 4: that with all these nickel defenses, it was the way
- 10:29Speaker 4: to go on offense. It's a matchup you can win
- 10:32Speaker 4: a lot. And I think that's what's happened. I think
- 10:35Speaker 4: people are finally with the quarterbacks more involved in the
- 10:38Speaker 4: running game. I think people have finally decided why keep
- 10:43Speaker 4: As much as people want you to throw the ball
- 10:46Speaker 4: analytically and even you know, visually people want you to
- 10:51Speaker 4: throw the ball all the time, the play right now
- 10:55Speaker 4: in today's league is to run it.
- 10:57Speaker 2: And this year was a good a good indicator of that.
- 11:01Speaker 4: Does work if you have the right people doing it,
- 11:04Speaker 4: and you know, everybody copies the champion, and you know
- 11:09Speaker 4: a lot of the good teams are very good at
- 11:11Speaker 4: running the ball right now, and that's and this is
- 11:15Speaker 4: the best class of running backs I can remember in
- 11:18Speaker 4: a very long time in the draft. So I think
- 11:21Speaker 4: the two things together will combine. I think during the
- 11:25Speaker 4: draft weekend you're going to see how much people like
- 11:28Speaker 4: these running backs. But I've been to a few combines
- 11:32Speaker 4: and that may have been the best position workout overall,
- 11:36Speaker 4: and I've ever seen.
- 11:37Speaker 2: Wow top to bottom.
- 11:39Speaker 1: Well, on top of that, I go back to a
- 11:41Speaker 1: couple of years ago when Bijon Robinson was number eight overall,
- 11:45Speaker 1: jamiir gives his number twelve, and I go, if you
- 11:48Speaker 1: ask those teams right now, are they happy with their
- 11:50Speaker 1: selections of value on those picks? And I go, well,
- 11:53Speaker 1: Bijon just ran for fifteen hundred yards and cut like
- 11:55Speaker 1: sixty balls out of the backfield. I'm pretty sure they're
- 11:58Speaker 1: happy with the choice.
- 12:00Speaker 4: Well, you know, people were saying, oh, Saquon shouldn't have
- 12:02Speaker 4: been taken it you know where he was, and they're
- 12:05Speaker 4: not saying it after this year exactly exactly you had
- 12:09Speaker 4: to wait a few years.
- 12:10Speaker 2: But you know, patience is a virtue. I guess, you know,
- 12:13Speaker 2: just just wait and the good stuff will come. But
- 12:16Speaker 2: this is a in the draft.
- 12:17Speaker 4: That's a fabulous group of running backs, and I think
- 12:21Speaker 4: the free agent running backs are going to feel the
- 12:23Speaker 4: pain because of it.
- 12:24Speaker 3: That's too bad. We were talking about Jamior Gibbson. When
- 12:26Speaker 3: the line selected him at twelve, I'm like, God, it
- 12:28Speaker 3: seems like a little bit of a reach. But now
- 12:30Speaker 3: I'm like, that's a hell of a smart pick. I mean,
- 12:32Speaker 3: you know, sometimes you just got to trust, trust your instincts,
- 12:35Speaker 3: I guess, and what your needs are and go for it.
- 12:38Speaker 3: Because that guy's an awesome player. I just, Jeff, I
- 12:40Speaker 3: would like to see a running back renaissance. I really would,
- 12:43Speaker 3: because that's what I grew up on, right, I mean,
- 12:45Speaker 3: that's how valuable those guys were. But when you look
- 12:48Speaker 3: at the total number of running backs now taking in
- 12:50Speaker 3: the draft, on average, it's not even half of what
- 12:53Speaker 3: it was. Let's say in nineteen ninety one, where you
- 12:55Speaker 3: have like forty five running backs taken. Now you've got
- 12:58Speaker 3: like eighteen to twenty two.
- 12:59Speaker 4: Maybe I think this year will be a little blip
- 13:03Speaker 4: this is a good group. Okay, but you're right, and again,
- 13:08Speaker 4: you know, the pressure of the business has created this
- 13:11Speaker 4: in some ways. Some of this isn't a football decision.
- 13:14Speaker 4: It's it's coaches trying to get hired. It's offensive coordinators
- 13:19Speaker 4: trying to be head coaches, and what owners respond to,
- 13:22Speaker 4: what a fans respond to. You know, no one ever says, Okay,
- 13:28Speaker 4: the team I love needs a head coach.
- 13:31Speaker 2: Let's go out and find the best defensive mind we can.
- 13:34Speaker 4: No one says that ever, I mean ever, they say,
- 13:38Speaker 4: let's get an innovator. We need to be you know, innovative,
- 13:42Speaker 4: an offense and creative, and we need to do more thing.
- 13:45Speaker 4: It's always that, and that that's not conducive to people,
- 13:51Speaker 4: you know, who are coming up in coaching to say,
- 13:53Speaker 4: to try and convince their head coaches, I think we
- 13:56Speaker 4: should call more running plays. I mean, look how the
- 13:58Speaker 4: Broncos struggled this past year trying to figure out when
- 14:02Speaker 4: to run the ball, and they have one of the
- 14:05Speaker 4: most experienced coaches in the league calling play just.
- 14:09Speaker 1: A couple of quick ones.
- 14:10Speaker 2: LEGI.
- 14:11Speaker 1: On the subject to running backs, there's a report out
- 14:13Speaker 1: of this sports anchor Darren Wolfson in Minnesota a couple
- 14:18Speaker 1: of days ago where he said that there is legit
- 14:20Speaker 1: steam for the Broncos in regards to Aaron Jones, have
- 14:24Speaker 1: you heard anything on that.
- 14:26Speaker 4: Well, he fits their offense the best of any free
- 14:28Speaker 4: agent running back, So I've put his name on any
- 14:32Speaker 4: list I've made. He's had three fifty catch seasons in
- 14:36Speaker 4: the last four years. That's and he rushed for one
- 14:40Speaker 4: thousand yards last year and he at twenty nine.
- 14:43Speaker 2: So he's thirty.
- 14:44Speaker 4: He just turned thirty and he's coming off a thousand
- 14:48Speaker 4: yard season with fifty catches. That's a joker in Peyton's offense.
- 14:53Speaker 4: He fits he of all the free agent running backs,
- 14:57Speaker 4: he is the best fit for the Broncos. And if
- 15:00Speaker 4: you're going to pursue one that old as a running back,
- 15:05Speaker 4: you want a guy with the health history he has.
- 15:07Speaker 4: He's on the field a lot, so he checks all
- 15:10Speaker 4: the boxes. They better have interest would be my reaction
- 15:14Speaker 4: to that.
- 15:14Speaker 1: Yeah, I agree. And then last thing for you, you were
- 15:17Speaker 1: at the combine. You saw a whole bunch of people
- 15:18Speaker 1: participating for the local products that were there between CUCSU
- 15:23Speaker 1: everybody else. Is there anybody who stood out? Tory Horton
- 15:26Speaker 1: guys like that.
- 15:27Speaker 4: Yeah, I think I think Tory helped himself. I think
- 15:30Speaker 4: people were wondering, you know, how does he look coming
- 15:33Speaker 4: off the injury? And he ran really well, So that's
- 15:36Speaker 4: that's always a good start, you know. I think, you know,
- 15:41Speaker 4: none of the receivers were really spectacular in the drills
- 15:45Speaker 4: because the quarterbacks were not spectacular in the drills. Other
- 15:49Speaker 4: than the the Louisville quarterback shuck, everyone else had a
- 15:54Speaker 4: pretty middling throw you know, throwing session.
- 15:57Speaker 2: You know a lot of people have been.
- 16:00Speaker 4: That Jackson Dark was head and shoulders above everybody there.
- 16:03Speaker 4: I personally did not see it that way, and many
- 16:06Speaker 4: coaches I talked to did not see it that way.
- 16:09Speaker 2: So I think that's a media creation.
- 16:12Speaker 4: Uh So, the receivers did not have a great day
- 16:15Speaker 4: catching because the quarterbacks did not have a great day throwing.
- 16:18Speaker 2: Overall, what happened to Will I think he helped himself
- 16:20Speaker 2: when he ran, for sure what happened to Will Howard,
- 16:24Speaker 2: But he was he had a tough day. He was
- 16:26Speaker 2: all over the place. You know, mill Row had a
- 16:29Speaker 2: tough day. He was all over the place.
- 16:31Speaker 4: Again, It's it's hard for a quarterback because you're throwing
- 16:35Speaker 4: the twenty guys, you've never thrown a pass too, for
- 16:40Speaker 4: the most part, and it's you're hopped up.
- 16:42Speaker 2: It's a tense situation.
- 16:44Speaker 4: And the combine, unlike Pro Day, which is why some
- 16:47Speaker 4: guys don't throw at the combine, is they picked the
- 16:50Speaker 4: most difficult routes and have you throw those over and
- 16:54Speaker 4: over because that's what they want to see. They don't
- 16:57Speaker 4: want to see you connect on the easy ones. They
- 16:59Speaker 4: want to make you throw the hard ones, and that
- 17:03Speaker 4: impacts some guys.
- 17:04Speaker 1: Thirty seconds. I got one guy that I love that
- 17:07Speaker 1: could be a mill.
- 17:07Speaker 2: Round anything in thirty seconds. You know this? All right?
- 17:10Speaker 1: Fine? Twenty five seconds?
- 17:12Speaker 3: Uh?
- 17:12Speaker 1: Saveon Williams TCUs six foot five, two hundred and thirty
- 17:17Speaker 1: pound running back, wide receiver. Whatever. What about him? Are
- 17:22Speaker 1: you with me? Should I be excited about this? Guys?
- 17:24Speaker 1: They're intrigued with him.
- 17:26Speaker 2: There's not a lot of intrigue.
- 17:28Speaker 4: I gotta be honest, you know, I think, uh, I
- 17:33Speaker 4: think people see him as a more athlete than player
- 17:36Speaker 4: right now. So that's your banking on potential, you know,
