- 0:01Today isn't separate from your future, it's a sample of it.
- 0:05There's a story behind that. This is your daily message from
- 0:09Chandmer 1133 to upgrade your mental game today by telling
- 0:13yourself a better story. Because the most important story
- 0:15you hear is the story you tell yourself.

- 0:32Here's the upgrade. You think today is just one day.
- 0:35But upgraded thinking asks a harder question.
- 0:37If you repeated exactly what you did today 365 more times, where
- 0:42would it leave you a year from now?
- 0:44Here's the story. Charlie Munger, the man who sat
- 0:48next to Warren Buffett for half a century, was asked how he got
- 0:51so wise. His answer wasn't talent.
- 0:53It was one hour a day, every day.
- 0:56He sat down and read. Slow going at first, nothing to
- 0:59show for it in a week or a month.
- 1:00But he did it 365 times. And then he did that again.
- 1:04And again. 4 decades at 100, he was a far better thinker than he
- 1:09had been at 50. The knowledge had compounded
- 1:11quietly, invisibly, one ordinary hour at a time, Munger said.
- 1:16Spend each day trying to be a little wiser than you were when
- 1:19you woke up. Slug it out one inch at a time,
- 1:21day by day. One inch.
- 1:24That's all today is asking of you.
- 1:26Not a transformation. An inch, because that's what
- 1:29you're actually doing. You can't move much in a day,
- 1:32but keep going in that direction.
- 1:34You're not living one day, you're voting for a year.
- 1:38Today isn't separate from your future, it's a sample of it.
- 1:42An empty field doesn't stay empty, and neither does a
- 1:44calendar. Repeat a wasted day 365 times
- 1:49and you've thrown away a season of your life.
- 1:51Repeat one good hour 24 times and you've built something
- 1:55nobody can take from you. The inch doesn't feel like
- 1:58anything on day one. Wise and lazy look identical.
- 2:02The reading looks pointless. The workout changes nothing.
- 2:06The quiet days tempt you to quit because the harvest is still
- 2:09underground. But compounding doesn't care how
- 2:13you feel. It only counts what you repeat.
- 2:15The rope you spin today is thin enough to snap.
- 2:18Layer it 365 times and it's too thick to break and it's either
- 2:22pulling you toward the person you want to be or dragging you
- 2:25back to who you were. When Munger was 50 years old, he
- 2:29had accumulated less than 1% of the wealth he would eventually
- 2:33have when he died, at 199% of his wealth was earned in the
- 2:37second-half of his life. The better story to tell
- 2:40yourself is I'm not spending a day.
- 2:42I'm casting a vote for the year I'll have.
- 2:45So stop asking whether today was a good day.
- 2:48Ask a bigger question. Would you want 365 more of it?
- 2:53If the answer is no, you don't need a new year.
- 2:56You need a new today, and you have one right now in your
- 3:00hands. Kevin Kelly's line from
- 3:02Excellent Advice for Living extends the horizon.
- 3:06He said quote, miraculous things can be accomplished if you give
- 3:10it 10 years. A long game will compound small
- 3:13gains that will be able to overcome even big mistakes.
