- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Dutch with Fexingo. I am Lucas, and this is Luna. Luna: Hi everyone! Today we are doing something active. We are going to the gym. Lucas: That is right. In previous episodes, we talked about health symptoms and visiting the doctor. Now we shift to prevention and fitness. Luna: I have been trying to exercise more lately. But I always forget the Dutch words for it. Lucas: It happens. The first phrase you need is very common. It is: Ik wil gaan sporten. Luna: Ik wil gaan sporten. That means I want to go exercise? Lucas: Exactly. It literally means I want to go do sports. Let us say it slowly. Ik wil gaan sporten. Luna: Ik wil gaan sporten. Okay. I want to go exercise. Lucas: Perfect. Now, if someone asks where you go to do that, what is the place called? Luna: The sports hall? Or the gym? Lucas: In Dutch, we use the word: De sportschool. Luna: De sportschool. Sounds like school but for sport. Lucas: Yes. Sportschool. Let us practice together. De sportschool. Luna: De sportschool. Got it. Lucas: Now, imagine you are talking to a friend at the reception desk. You might say: Ik ga naar de sportschool. Luna: Ik ga naar de sportschool. I am going to the gym. Lucas: Right. And often people ask what kind of exercise you do. Do you lift weights? Luna: No, not really. I prefer softer exercises. Like stretching. Lucas: Then you would use this phrase: Ik doe aan yoga. Luna: Ik doe aan yoga. Literally I do at yoga? Lucas: It is a set expression. Ik doe aan means I participate in or I do. So, Ik doe aan yoga. Luna: Ik doe aan yoga. Okay. I do yoga. Lucas: Let us repeat that one more time to lock it in. Ik doe aan yoga. Luna: Ik doe aan yoga. That feels natural. Lucas: It is very useful. Now, let us look at the third phrase. When you join a gym, what do you get? Luna: A card? A key? Lucas: Usually a membership. In Dutch, that is: Ik heb een abonnement. Luna: Abonnement. Is that like subscription? Lucas: Yes. Abonnement. It is pronounced ah beh mon men. But we just write it. Ik heb een abonnement. Luna: Ik heb een abonnement. I have a membership. Lucas: Correct. This is what you show when you enter. Here is my membership. Ik heb een abonnement. Luna: Ik heb een abonnement. Simple and clear. Lucas: Finally, after your workout, many people relax. In the Netherlands, gyms often have saunas. Luna: Oh, I love saunas. How do I ask if it is available? Lucas: You can ask: Is de sauna open. Luna: Is de sauna open. Is the sauna open? Lucas: Yes. Just swap the word for other things too. Is the pool open? Is the library open? Is de sauna open. Luna: Is de sauna open. I hope it is warm today. Lucas: Let us review our five phrases quickly. First: Ik wil gaan sporten. Luna: Ik wil gaan sporten. I want to go exercise. Lucas: Second: De sportschool. Luna: De sportschool. The gym. Lucas: Third: Ik doe aan yoga. Luna: Ik doe aan yoga. I do yoga. Lucas: Fourth: Ik heb een abonnement. Luna: Ik heb een abonnement. I have a membership. Lucas: And fifth: Is de sauna open. Luna: Is de sauna open. Is the sauna open. Lucas: Excellent work. What do I say first? Lucas: You greet them and state your purpose. Say: Ik wil gaan sporten. Luna: Goedemorgen. Ik wil gaan sporten. Lucas: Good start. Then they will ask for your membership. Show them your phone or card. Luna: Hier is mijn kaart. Ik heb een abonnement. Lucas: Perfect. They check you in. Now you are inside. Where do you go? Luna: I want to do yoga. So I ask: Waar is de yoga les? Lucas: They point you to a room. After class, you feel tired but good. You want to relax. Luna: Do I ask: Is de sauna open? Lucas: Yes. If they say yes, you go enjoy. If no, you shower instead. But today, it is open. Luna: Is de sauna open? Ja, het is open! Lucas: There you go. You handled the whole interaction smoothly. Remember, consistency is key. Even ten minutes a day helps. Luna: I am going to try to go to the sportschool tomorrow morning. Lucas: That sounds like a plan. Just remember to pack your towel for the sauna. Luna: I will. Thanks, Lucas. This was energizing. Lucas: Anytime, Luna. Keep practicing those phrases until we chat again. See you next time.
