- 0:02When we observe the nerves and their role in our actions, we
- 0:06see that they carry vital sensations within a physical
- 0:09frame to connect our senses and responses to external pressures
- 0:16to the brain, and then carry impulses back to the organs of
- 0:21action. Most people do not recognize the
- 0:25essential role of this interface between the vital and the
- 0:28physical. In determining how we react and
- 0:32then how we respond to the situations of our lives, the
- 0:38pressure on the nervous system has become dramatically more
- 0:41intense with the advent of modern society and its increased
- 0:46levels of noise, electronic impulses and distractions, not
- 0:52to speak of the chemicals that impact the being and the drugs
- 0:56that are so commonly prescribed. Were used without prescription
- 1:01to try to modulate certain conditions of the physical body
- 1:04or the mind. The practitioner of yoga finds
- 1:09that nervous weakness and disturbance represents an
- 1:12enormous obstacle. There are methods recommended
- 1:16for the purification of the nerves to calm them and prepare
- 1:20them to carry the force of an enhanced energetic flow in the
- 1:24being many of these methods. Developed over many centuries
- 1:30can be helpful, but they were frequently coupled with
- 1:33withdrawal from the external life and seclusion in quiet,
- 1:38concentrated environments in today's world, and with a focus
- 1:44on transformation of life rather than escape from life, it is
- 1:48essential that the additional insight be brought to ensuring
- 1:54that the nervous system is solid, stable.
- 1:57And calm. Much of the disruption we note
- 2:02in the nervous system comes through what we consume.
- 2:05Not just food but also media, social interactions, the air we
- 2:11breathe, the thoughts we accept, the work we do, the constant
- 2:16bombardment of sights, sounds and smells as we go through
- 2:21daily life. Some of these things are
- 2:24virtually impossible to avoid. Others can be modulated or
- 2:29moderated. Instead of imbibing a constant
- 2:32diet of television, radio, Internet, social media, mobile
- 2:37phone use, the seeker can find a balance that reduces the impact
- 2:42of these disrupting factors. Many people do not recognize the
- 2:47impact that use of recreational drugs as well as pharmaceutical
- 2:51prescription drugs actually have on the nervous system.
- 2:56The long term impact of these inputs can take years to clear
- 3:01up, assuming they have been discontinued.
- 3:06For the practitioner of yoga, the understanding of the vital
- 3:10physical nervous system is of considerable importance in
- 3:15gaining mastery over the reactions and the very health of
- 3:18the physical body as the foundation of the life in the
- 3:23material world. Three or Abendo notes Quote the
- 3:28vital physical, on the other hand, is the vehicle of the
- 3:32nervous responses of our physical nature.
- 3:36It is the field and instrument of the smaller sensations,
- 3:40desires, reactions of all kinds to the impacts of the outer
- 3:45physical and gross material life.
- 3:48This vital physical part supported by the lowest part of
- 3:52the vital proper. Is therefore the agent of most
- 3:56of the lesser movements of our external life.
- 4:00Its habitual reactions and obstinate pettinesses are the
- 4:05chief stumbling block in the way of transformation of the outer
- 4:08consciousness by the yoga. It is also largely responsible
- 4:14for most of the suffering and disease of mind or body to which
- 4:19the physical being is subject in nature.
