- 0:00Speaker 1: Good morning, everyone. Steve Elsie here. On this Friday morning,
- 0:05Speaker 1: October 2nd. And we have a great show for you today.
- 0:10Speaker 1: We do. Hope you guys are ready for the weekend.
- 0:15Speaker 1: It's going to be a good weekend. It'll be good
- 0:18Speaker 1: because you'll make it good, right? It's all in the
- 0:20Speaker 1: way you think of things. But today, on this show,
- 0:25Speaker 1: at 6.30, joining me, uh, former state rep and first selectman,
- 0:30Speaker 1: Kevin Allen. He will be a great, great guest. And
- 0:34Speaker 1: I've been on his radio show a few different times. Um,
- 0:38Speaker 1: he has, and, uh, always a great guy to talk
- 0:41Speaker 1: to really is at seven o'clock. We have Hayward Gatch
- 0:46Speaker 1: who will just bring this conversation to an intellectual level that,
- 0:52Speaker 1: that is just excellent.
- 0:54Speaker 2: It really is.
- 0:54Speaker 1: It just, he just takes it somewhere that, uh, You know,
- 1:00Speaker 1: he's one of those guys that when you talk to him,
- 1:03Speaker 1: the insight and depth that he brings to the conversation
- 1:07Speaker 1: is like no one else. It really is. He's just great.
- 1:09Speaker 1: I love him. He's got lots to say. Anyway, he'll
- 1:11Speaker 1: be on at 7 o'clock. At 7.30, yes, John Laboutelier
- 1:17Speaker 1: is back. Boots will be with me. And we'll talk everything,
- 1:23Speaker 1: you know. national politics happening, and we'll see what his
- 1:27Speaker 1: take on where we are today and where we're going
- 1:33Speaker 1: to go tomorrow. So we'll see about that. At 8 a.m.,
- 1:39Speaker 1: Barbara Neff from New London will be joining us, and
- 1:45Speaker 1: she's got so many things cooking up, really does, this fall,
- 1:49Speaker 1: this whole season, and she runs events. And she's got, uh,
- 1:53Speaker 1: there's a lot of events coming up that she's going
- 1:54Speaker 1: to talk about. Um, and I think you're going to
- 1:57Speaker 1: love some of those things. And if you haven't, you know,
- 2:00Speaker 1: been to new London, uh, over the past 20 years
- 2:03Speaker 1: and all the events happening, then you really don't know
- 2:05Speaker 1: what you're missing because she puts on incredible events really does. Uh,
- 2:11Speaker 1: and then at eight 30, you know, this is where
- 2:13Speaker 1: we're going to kind of let loose a little bit. And, uh, uh,
- 2:17Speaker 1: Waterford's own Mike Bassetto will join me. And, uh, I'm
- 2:21Speaker 1: not even sure what we're going to talk about. But
- 2:24Speaker 1: he's got a few things he wants to say and
- 2:27Speaker 1: to promote. And, you know, he's a great community guy.
- 2:32Speaker 1: So we'll hear what he has to say. Yeah, pretty
- 2:37Speaker 1: big week for me. Pretty transitional week. I did get
- 2:41Speaker 1: a new job.
- 2:42Speaker 3: That's right.
- 2:42Speaker 1: I've been at the Homeless Hospitality Center for eight years now,
- 2:47Speaker 1: I think. You know, I started at the Homeless Hospitality
- 2:50Speaker 1: Center in development, you know, sort of fundraising. And from there,
- 2:57Speaker 1: moved into program management with a couple of different programs.
- 3:03Speaker 1: Those programs have been sunsetted by the state. So, you know,
- 3:06Speaker 1: I'm sort of in limbo. So I've been looking. And thankfully, thankfully,
- 3:12Speaker 1: the Easterseals in Norwich has hired me as their digital
- 3:15Speaker 1: technology teacher. And I will be teaching... Vets, technology, phone technology,
- 3:21Speaker 1: computer technology. That's right. Let's hear it. And, yeah, and,
- 3:29Speaker 1: you know, building resumes. And these are things I do
- 3:31Speaker 1: now anyway with a lot of my homeless folks or
- 3:34Speaker 1: folks experiencing homelessness, I should say. You know, rebuild their
- 3:38Speaker 1: lives with resumes and try to get them jobs. That's
- 3:40Speaker 1: going to be the same sort of thing up at
- 3:43Speaker 1: Rally Point, but it will be combined and additioned with um, technology. Uh,
- 3:50Speaker 1: and apparently up there, there's all kinds of cool computers and, um, and,
- 3:54Speaker 1: and gadgets and whatnot. And, and a lot of great
- 3:57Speaker 1: folks that up there that are, that are in need, uh,
- 4:01Speaker 1: and to rebuild their lives and need to know this technology.
- 4:03Speaker 1: I mean, you know, today's new iPhones or, or phones
- 4:07Speaker 1: in general can be tricky and computers are always an issue,
- 4:11Speaker 1: especially for older folks. Um, and that, uh, and if
- 4:14Speaker 1: I can help them in, in some way, shape or form,
- 4:17Speaker 1: then that is what I will do. Um, so that
- 4:20Speaker 1: is where I'm headed. And, you know, at the end
- 4:22Speaker 1: of this month. Um, and so, uh, I look forward
- 4:26Speaker 1: to starting, starting a new career with vets up at
- 4:30Speaker 1: rally point. So there we go. Um, a couple of
- 4:34Speaker 1: things happened this week that, uh, you know, in my,
- 4:37Speaker 1: on my caseload at, at the shelter, I have, I
- 4:41Speaker 1: don't know, maybe, maybe 14 people or so. Um, And
- 4:48Speaker 1: I have pretty good success with them in taking them
- 4:53Speaker 1: from having been homeless to be housed. And then with
- 5:00Speaker 1: continual care and management, keep them housed and keep them
- 5:06Speaker 1: sort of drug free and on the right path. That's
- 5:10Speaker 1: been my goal. I mean, you know, with with with
- 5:14Speaker 1: with my clients. The program I'm in has 50 clients.
- 5:18Speaker 1: I only have 14 of them. So I can't speak
- 5:20Speaker 1: to everybody else. But one of my clients this week
- 5:25Speaker 1: sort of took me off the rails a little bit.
- 5:30Speaker 1: One of my steady clients. And I have been working
- 5:34Speaker 1: with this client who has been in rehabilitation for about
- 5:38Speaker 1: a year for drug and alcohol use. And literally a
- 5:45Speaker 1: year in rehabilitation, working with him, programs, everything. And in
- 5:51Speaker 1: this year he has, uh, lost his, was in jeopardy
- 5:57Speaker 1: of losing his voucher because he was not housed and
- 6:01Speaker 1: you need to be housed to keep your voucher. So
- 6:06Speaker 1: about four months ago, uh, we had a hearing and I,
- 6:12Speaker 1: and I, uh, you know, was sort of, uh, his,
- 6:18Speaker 1: his voice and with the state. And I, you know,
- 6:23Speaker 1: I did my best Tom Cruise, you know, I really did. I, I,
- 6:27Speaker 1: you know, you can't handle the truth is exactly what
- 6:30Speaker 1: happened here. Okay. You can't handle the truth about these
- 6:33Speaker 1: folks and, and, and what's happening with this, this client.
- 6:36Speaker 1: And this is where he is. And, and we, we,
- 6:38Speaker 1: I did this whole song and dance thing. And I
- 6:41Speaker 1: got his voucher. He did not lose it, which is
- 6:44Speaker 1: almost unheard of. It really is. Once you're unhoused for
- 6:47Speaker 1: a while, they just the state has no, you know,
- 6:51Speaker 1: feelings or anything. They just sort of take it away.
- 6:54Speaker 1: And that's it. After 90 days, that's it. So he
- 6:57Speaker 1: is he was clearly out of bounds with that. So
- 7:03Speaker 1: I got his voucher back and with his voucher. Now
- 7:05Speaker 1: we can get a place. because he's been in rehabilitation
- 7:09Speaker 1: and is ready to get a place. And we have
- 7:11Speaker 1: to get him a place quickly, because he has to
- 7:13Speaker 1: be housed. I did that. So last week, I got
- 7:18Speaker 1: him a place, I think on Thursday. And it was
- 7:25Speaker 1: a very happy moment for him. It really was. He
- 7:29Speaker 1: literally was in tears as we brought in, you know, sofa, couch...
- 7:34Speaker 1: that we got, you know, donated and a nice bed and, uh,
- 7:39Speaker 1: all the, all the things you need to start.
- 7:42Speaker 4: Right.
- 7:43Speaker 1: I got it all for him. It was a, it
- 7:44Speaker 1: was a week prior to moving in of just moving
- 7:49Speaker 1: him in and getting stuff and finding stuff. And so
- 7:55Speaker 1: this was Thursday and then we had the big nor'easter,
- 7:58Speaker 1: you know, we lost power and all that good stuff,
- 7:59Speaker 1: including myself. Um, And during that Nor'easter, on the weekend,
- 8:08Speaker 1: I get a few calls that he is in the hospital. Now,
- 8:12Speaker 1: this is movement Thursday. And by Saturday, he's in the hospital,
- 8:17Speaker 1: completely drunk, completely just overloaded. That's it. So, you know,
- 8:26Speaker 1: get the reports, write the reports, you know, and so forth.
- 8:33Speaker 1: Comes back on Sunday. And as soon as he gets back,
- 8:37Speaker 1: goes back right at it. Right at it. So I
- 8:41Speaker 1: do a house call. I do a house call. I
- 8:44Speaker 1: go to his house. And I read him the riot act.
- 8:49Speaker 1: Up one side and down the other. Take all the
- 8:52Speaker 1: alcohol and dump it out in front of him. Right
- 8:55Speaker 1: into the into the and the hard alcohol, by the way,
- 8:59Speaker 1: not just beer, right into the sink. shaking like a leaf,
- 9:03Speaker 1: read him the Rydak. Absolutely. And I do this with
- 9:06Speaker 1: his cousin on the phone because his cousin's the only
- 9:09Speaker 1: person that speaks to them. And so I wanted her
- 9:11Speaker 1: to hear what's going on. I mean, I think, I
- 9:15Speaker 1: think I, I haven't been that mad in a while
- 9:18Speaker 1: because I spent so much time with this gentleman saving his,
- 9:26Speaker 1: his arse and, and getting him where he is. And
- 9:31Speaker 1: so I just stood there and just belittled him and
- 9:35Speaker 1: what we've done and where he's going to lose his voucher, everything.
- 9:39Speaker 1: So I dumped it all out and I left and
- 9:41Speaker 1: I said, I'll come back on Monday and I better
- 9:44Speaker 1: not see this place like this at all. Well, I
- 9:50Speaker 1: try to come back on Monday. I can't get in.
- 9:53Speaker 1: So I figure he's sleeping. Come back a little bit later.
- 9:58Speaker 1: The door is open. Blood everywhere. Bottles everywhere. Feces everywhere.
- 10:08Speaker 1: Chairs turned upside down. Absolute chaos. I'm walking and I
- 10:16Speaker 1: don't even know what I'm walking on. Flies are everywhere.
- 10:22Speaker 1: Windows are wide open. Lights are turned on. Milk spilled everywhere.
- 10:29Speaker 1: So I called the hospital. Sure enough, he went back
- 10:33Speaker 1: at it. Broke his jaw. Absolutely obliterated. Brain bleed. And
- 10:43Speaker 1: now he's at Yale New Haven Hospital. And at that point,
- 10:46Speaker 1: I just kind of sat back and I just realized...
- 10:51Speaker 1: I can't help everybody. I can't do it. I can't.
- 10:55Speaker 1: I can't do it. And so I made the reports again.
- 11:03Speaker 1: Talked to his cousin again. And we got to figure
- 11:07Speaker 1: out how. I'm not going back in this place. Not
- 11:10Speaker 1: at all. I need a hazmat suit to go back
- 11:12Speaker 1: in there. Just not doing it. And so we have
- 11:16Speaker 1: to figure that out. But it was just. with such
- 11:20Speaker 1: success that I've had and my clients absolutely love me
- 11:23Speaker 1: and rely on me. It just was one that really
- 11:26Speaker 1: hit me hard. It's like the demon one, right? The
- 11:33Speaker 1: demon one, no matter how much, how much I helped him,
- 11:38Speaker 1: he just gave me lip service and he knew exactly
- 11:40Speaker 1: what he was going to do. And I couldn't stop it.
- 11:44Speaker 1: And now he's in Yale New Haven hospital and he'll
- 11:46Speaker 1: be there for a while. Matter of fact, when he
- 11:48Speaker 1: comes out, I may not even be at the place anymore.
- 11:52Speaker 1: That might be the last time I see him right there. So, anyway,
- 11:59Speaker 1: not to go sad, but we're going to take it
- 12:01Speaker 1: up from there. But that was the story this week,
- 12:04Speaker 1: and I can't win it all. Win some, you lose some.
- 12:09Speaker 1: But today, we're going to start right now and bring
- 12:11Speaker 1: it up, and we're going to win some. Kevin Allen
- 12:12Speaker 1: on next.
- 12:20Speaker 5: I'll wash away your lies And have you hypnotized.
- 12:25Speaker 6: There'll be no compromise today.

- 20:02Speaker 1: many push-ups we can actually do.
- 20:05Speaker 9: In a row.

- 20:15Speaker 1: with Kevin Allen. And, you know, uh, I don't think
- 20:18Speaker 1: Kevin realized the guns that I have. I don't think
- 20:20Speaker 1: he understands it.
- 20:21Speaker 24: I'm at the gun show between the two, the LC
- 20:23Speaker 24: brother and Steve LC brother here, brother. It's like, uh,
- 20:27Speaker 24: I feel like I'm on a set of a WWE wrestling.
- 20:29Speaker 1: Well, you could be, it, it, it could very well be, uh, Kevin,
- 20:33Speaker 1: what's going on?
- 20:35Speaker 24: Good morning and happy Friday, Steve.
- 20:36Speaker 1: Happy Friday to you.
- 20:37Speaker 24: My favorite show of the week is this week.
- 20:40Speaker 1: It's Fridays. Well, I appreciate that.
- 20:42Speaker 24: After you get off, I'm saying, but I mean not Fridays.
- 20:44Speaker 5: Whoa!
- 20:45Speaker 9: Look at that!
- 20:47Speaker 1: A comedian as well. So what's new? What's happening in
- 20:50Speaker 1: your world?
- 20:51Speaker 9: Oh, man.
- 20:52Speaker 24: Well, first and foremost, thanks for having me on.
- 20:53Speaker 2: Yeah, of course.
- 20:54Speaker 24: And thank you to the whole team here.
- 20:58Speaker 9: Amazing.
- 20:58Speaker 1: You know what's new in my world?
- 21:00Speaker 24: Every day is a smile, man. I truly am feeling
- 21:03Speaker 24: so blessed and Just love life.
- 21:06Speaker 1: I love that. And you've got a lot of new
- 21:09Speaker 1: sort of ventures happening.
- 21:11Speaker 24: Always do. I mean, let's go again. But this one's
- 21:13Speaker 24: been the real one.
- 21:14Speaker 25: Right.
- 21:14Speaker 1: But you've had quite the career, right? You're a former
- 21:17Speaker 1: state rep. You've been a first selectman. You've been, I
- 21:20Speaker 1: don't know, 100 other things. 100 other things.
- 21:22Speaker 24: Corrections officer.
- 21:22Speaker 1: Corrections officer. But now you have something new that you've introduced.
- 21:27Speaker 1: And what is it?
- 21:28Speaker 24: So it's actually seven years old, this project, with Uncle Earl's.
- 21:31Speaker 24: I'm actually wearing the shirt. Seven years ago, I lived
- 21:34Speaker 24: on a hemp. I got you a shirt coming. I
- 21:36Speaker 24: got you all shirts. Shirts on the way. Seven years ago,
- 21:39Speaker 24: I had a hemp farm. We did a hemp farm
- 21:41Speaker 24: up in Plainfield, Connecticut, 40 acres, lived off the grid,
- 21:44Speaker 24: nine months, no running water, no power. Best experience of
- 21:47Speaker 24: my life. Changed my life. And I started thinking about
- 21:50Speaker 24: products in the CBD world because that was the businesses
- 21:53Speaker 24: I was entering into. And we ended up creating 12
- 21:57Speaker 24: different stores in Connecticut. Had a really great experience. I
- 21:59Speaker 24: started creating drinks. And I was battling my alcoholism. And
- 22:04Speaker 24: I wanted to still drink a Manhattan, and I wanted
- 22:06Speaker 24: to do it in an authentic way. So I started
- 22:08Speaker 24: working on creating a non-alcohol spirit that could be infused then.
- 22:12Speaker 24: I was thinking CBD, THC, whatever you want to put
- 22:16Speaker 24: in it is an infusion. And ultimately, seven years later,
- 22:20Speaker 24: we launched our project. And we are happy to say
- 22:22Speaker 24: that we'll be on the shelves on November 24th, our release.
- 22:25Speaker 24: With Uncle Earl's non-alcohol bourbon this year. And so it's amazing.
- 22:28Speaker 1: It's called Uncle Earl's non-alcoholic bourbon.
- 22:31Speaker 26: Thank you.
- 22:31Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 22:32Speaker 24: Thank you to the audience out there.
- 22:33Speaker 27: Wow.
- 22:34Speaker 1: Big cheer.
- 22:35Speaker 24: Bottles of alcohol, non-alcoholic spirits on the way out for
- 22:38Speaker 24: the visitors here.
- 22:39Speaker 1: And so what is, you know, does it, I mean,
- 22:41Speaker 1: what's the taste?
- 22:43Speaker 24: It's authentic.
- 22:44Speaker 1: It's authentic.
- 22:44Speaker 24: Yeah, it's an authentic bourbon taste. We actually had the
- 22:47Speaker 24: privilege of being a part of... a pitch last two
- 22:50Speaker 24: weeks ago. Um, you, you know about that, uh, down at, uh, uh,
- 22:53Speaker 24: talks brewing there in new London with sector. And, I
- 22:57Speaker 24: got to present my product, um, and, uh, actually came
- 22:59Speaker 24: in third place.
- 23:00Speaker 9: Amazing.
- 23:01Speaker 24: Just so I'm just so grateful for that opportunity. And, uh, yeah,
- 23:05Speaker 24: people tasted it.
- 23:06Speaker 1: They loved it.
- 23:06Speaker 24: And, um, I'm out knocking doors. I mean, this week alone, I,
- 23:10Speaker 24: I had a lot of great sales this week. So
- 23:12Speaker 24: let me ask you.
- 23:12Speaker 1: So where this goes, you would pitch this to any bar,
- 23:16Speaker 1: any restaurant, anything, right? This can go anywhere. Or has
- 23:19Speaker 1: it got a specific place you're putting it?
- 23:21Speaker 24: No, actually, great question. So we're actually looking to be
- 23:24Speaker 24: in any retail establishment that would want something like this.
- 23:28Speaker 24: And you're seeing a trend happen now with flavor profiles.
- 23:30Speaker 24: 45% of Gen Z's don't drink alcohol anymore. And it's growing.
- 23:35Speaker 1: There's a big push for like, you know, these.
- 23:38Speaker 1: Adult looking smoothie bars that have a nightlife feel, but
- 23:43Speaker 1: they're non-alcoholic.
- 23:44Speaker 3: Exactly.
- 23:45Speaker 1: Exactly.
- 23:45Speaker 24: I think you look at COVID and, you know, me
- 23:48Speaker 24: and many other people went through COVID and alcohol took
- 23:52Speaker 24: the best of me. And, you know, since COVID 50%
- 23:55Speaker 24: of the drinkers are drinking 50% less.
- 23:57Speaker 28: I know.
- 23:58Speaker 1: Well, listen, I, I, had a story earlier. I started
- 24:01Speaker 1: with a story about an alcoholism and a client of mine.
- 24:03Speaker 1: So I know it's real. And I, and I, and I,
- 24:05Speaker 1: I've seen the demon.
- 24:06Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 24:07Speaker 1: And, uh, you know, and I'm glad that you've faced
- 24:10Speaker 1: the demon and won the demon, beat the demon. And
- 24:13Speaker 1: now you're actually like going to profit off that demon
- 24:15Speaker 1: in a way that's going to help other people.
- 24:17Speaker 24: Well, our, our goal is, uh, thank you for that.
- 24:19Speaker 24: And our goal is to create this company here in
- 24:21Speaker 24: Southeastern Connecticut, uh, launch, uh, here over the next, uh, year.
- 24:25Speaker 24: And then getting late into third quarter Q3 of 2027, uh,
- 24:29Speaker 24: Start looking at some other states and some other distribution.
- 24:32Speaker 24: But ultimately, we're here to support local nonprofits that deal
- 24:37Speaker 24: with people with alcoholism, mental health. So one percent of
- 24:40Speaker 24: our gross is going to go to a and I'm
- 24:42Speaker 24: not going to announce it till we make an official.
- 24:44Speaker 24: But we're going to be actually supporting a local establishment here.
- 24:47Speaker 24: And that's important because to me, without those resources, I
- 24:50Speaker 24: don't think I'd be alive today.
- 24:52Speaker 21: I get it.
- 24:52Speaker 1: I get it. So is it just– so you have
- 24:54Speaker 1: one drink. It's one– So far. So far, yeah. So
- 24:57Speaker 1: what's– if you were to kind of expand that a
- 25:00Speaker 1: little bit, where would you want to take it next?
- 25:02Speaker 1: If you have this one, which is fabulous, but what's next?
- 25:04Speaker 24: So we have vodka, tequila, rum, gin, and every one
- 25:07Speaker 24: of the profiles and the recipes have been built. We
- 25:10Speaker 24: just picked up a deal with a flavor house that
- 25:13Speaker 24: creates products, and we're working with them directly.
- 25:16Speaker 29: Yeah.
- 25:17Speaker 24: We just talked to Knowledge Beverage Company to do our production.
- 25:20Speaker 24: And so everything's lined up. But the bourbon, I wanted
- 25:23Speaker 24: the release with a bourbon. And I will say for
- 25:25Speaker 24: my own selfishness, I want a Manhattan. And so I
- 25:28Speaker 24: created this product. And it came out really good. And
- 25:32Speaker 24: so we're excited about it.
- 25:34Speaker 1: Listen, I know the event you were talking about. And
- 25:37Speaker 1: it was well attended. And everybody seemed to like it.
- 25:43Speaker 1: the cowboy what you were offering the drink it was
- 25:48Speaker 1: great it really was and of course you do radio
- 25:52Speaker 1: as well I do.
- 25:52Speaker 24: A little bit of that I'm not to the reputation
- 25:56Speaker 24: of yourself and others but I try but that's an
- 26:00Speaker 24: outlet for me that I'm just so blessed to be
- 26:02Speaker 24: able to get on and talk I love talking your
- 26:04Speaker 24: brother inspired me I give him credit all the time
- 26:06Speaker 24: he's one of my mentors I got a chance to
- 26:09Speaker 24: do it a long time ago it's fun to be.
- 26:10Speaker 1: Here You know, and it's not just, you're not just
- 26:14Speaker 1: going on the radio, though, but you're creating some community vibes, right?
- 26:19Speaker 1: You're trying to connect communities. You know, I'm on here today,
- 26:24Speaker 1: and I'm just kind of speaking out and doing things
- 26:26Speaker 1: with folks, but you have got a mission to connect people. 100%.
- 26:29Speaker 1: And so tell us a little bit about how that
- 26:31Speaker 1: works with you.
- 26:31Speaker 24: Yeah, so, I mean, one of the things I've been
- 26:33Speaker 24: blessed to do with, you know, media and coming through
- 26:35Speaker 24: all these iterations of my life, and I'm open about it, man, like,
- 26:39Speaker 24: One of the greatest calls I get typically is from
- 26:41Speaker 24: a guy named Lee Elseen. He'll say, so what are
- 26:43Speaker 24: you up to now? Because it's like, what are you
- 26:45Speaker 24: up to now, bro? Like, what are you doing, right?
- 26:48Speaker 24: You always got something going on. I've tried so many mountains,
- 26:50Speaker 24: but you know what? Let me say to the kids
- 26:52Speaker 24: out there that are listening before school, don't give up
- 26:55Speaker 24: on your dreams, man. I'm 56 years old, and I've
- 26:57Speaker 24: been dreaming since I was a little boy. And every
- 27:00Speaker 24: one of my dreams, you know what? People might have
- 27:02Speaker 24: an opinion of it, and unfortunately— That's their problem. I've
- 27:06Speaker 24: made an effort to enjoy every part of my life
- 27:08Speaker 24: and I've screwed a lot up. But you know what?
- 27:10Speaker 24: I don't stop. But my real dream is to bring
- 27:12Speaker 24: people to a table. And, you know, we named the
- 27:15Speaker 24: series I do is the one table radio show. And
- 27:18Speaker 24: the concept one table is like everyone comes to that table.
- 27:21Speaker 24: I mean, it happens right here.
- 27:22Speaker 1: You have King Arthur, the round table.
- 27:24Speaker 4: Exactly.
- 27:25Speaker 24: And everyone's got an opinion. Everyone's got something to say.
- 27:28Speaker 24: And I love that part of it.
- 27:29Speaker 1: Well, you know. again, the King Arthur, you know, the
- 27:32Speaker 1: one table, it's a round table. It's not, it doesn't
- 27:34Speaker 1: have a head of the table. It doesn't, it's just
- 27:36Speaker 1: all round. Everybody has the same voice, right?
- 27:38Speaker 27: Yeah. Yeah.
- 27:39Speaker 1: And, uh, yeah. Respect.
- 27:41Speaker 3: Respect.
- 27:41Speaker 1: And I know you're taking this round table idea on
- 27:45Speaker 1: the road.
- 27:45Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 27:46Speaker 25: Yeah.
- 27:46Speaker 24: We have a, we, uh, secured an opportunity for a
- 27:48Speaker 24: residency with the Chestnut theater, um, in downtown knowledge, the
- 27:52Speaker 24: chest on a beautiful little place. Um, And we're going
- 27:55Speaker 24: to be doing six series, six. Well, right now we're
- 27:57Speaker 24: looking at targeting six different speaking series next year at
- 28:00Speaker 24: the Chestnut. And it's going to be fun. I'm working
- 28:03Speaker 24: out the details right now. Hopefully going to get some
- 28:05Speaker 24: local people. And, you know, the first show is going
- 28:08Speaker 24: to be first show we're targeting or at least one
- 28:10Speaker 24: of the first shows is going to be, you know,
- 28:12Speaker 24: local influencers, people that are influencing.
- 28:15Speaker 1: Am I on the first show? Oh, of course, Steve.
- 28:17Speaker 24: Yes, yes, of course you are on the first show.
- 28:19Speaker 24: You're coming in for the last 30 seconds of the show,
- 28:22Speaker 24: but you're coming.
- 28:23Speaker 1: In to kind of just round it all out. Yeah,
- 28:25Speaker 1: just help.
- 28:26Speaker 24: People get out of the theater at the end. Of
- 28:27Speaker 24: course you're on.
- 28:28Speaker 1: Help them right out. This way. Yeah, exactly. Follow me.
- 28:31Speaker 24: But it's fun because it brings a lot of– I
- 28:33Speaker 24: want to just– if I had anything to leave behind,
- 28:36Speaker 24: I hope it's that I tried to help people.
- 28:40Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 28:40Speaker 1: I tried to help in my way. And that's– our
- 28:42Speaker 1: relationship– is sort of recent, I would say.
- 28:48Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 28:48Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 28:49Speaker 1: And that is sort of the, um, the vibe that, uh,
- 28:53Speaker 1: our first meeting, um, that I got was, you know,
- 28:58Speaker 1: immediately you were just, you, you, you helped me understand
- 29:03Speaker 1: where you're coming from and it was community based. And
- 29:08Speaker 1: so immediately, um, I was like, okay, let's do this.
- 29:12Speaker 1: Let's do it. That's, that's where, that's, that's where it is. Um,
- 29:15Speaker 1: It wasn't a I, I, me, me sort of thing
- 29:17Speaker 1: where you're trying to, you know, how do you put
- 29:19Speaker 1: yourself on a spotlight? It was how do we build
- 29:21Speaker 1: something where real voices can be heard and real opinions
- 29:26Speaker 1: can be heard and not fought over, just heard and
- 29:29Speaker 1: thought about and seeds being planted so you can do
- 29:33Speaker 1: your own investigation and research and figure it out for yourself.
- 29:36Speaker 1: I think we best figure things out when we communicate,
- 29:39Speaker 1: you know, as humans.
- 29:40Speaker 18: Right?
- 29:40Speaker 24: Like when we can get in a room or on
- 29:42Speaker 24: a call or whatever and talk. And quite honestly, it's
- 29:45Speaker 24: I used to be about me, Steve. So, you know,
- 29:48Speaker 24: you've seen a new version. You know, I can promise
- 29:51Speaker 24: you that I can look back and own every everything
- 29:53Speaker 24: that I've done in my life. And I always I
- 29:56Speaker 24: wasn't always that way. And, you know, there's there's I
- 29:58Speaker 24: talk about it. There's some reasons maybe why I might
- 30:00Speaker 24: have acted that way.
- 30:01Speaker 1: Yeah, certainly.
- 30:02Speaker 24: But who I am today, man, I'm just feeling so blessed.
- 30:05Speaker 24: I get to meet so many amazing people. I get
- 30:06Speaker 24: to smile every day.
- 30:07Speaker 27: Yeah.
- 30:08Speaker 24: And I'm just, you know, I give all glory to
- 30:09Speaker 24: my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. And I know higher
- 30:12Speaker 24: powers are different for people out there. But I'll tell
- 30:14Speaker 24: you right now, for me, God saved me on December
- 30:17Speaker 24: 17th of 2022. And I have not looked back since.
- 30:19Speaker 1: I love that. I love it. I love it. It's amazing.
- 30:21Speaker 1: It's amazing.
- 30:22Speaker 13: And yeah.
- 30:23Speaker 1: You know, as I opened up where you, you know,
- 30:26Speaker 1: you were in politics, right? I was, yes.
- 30:28Speaker 24: You know, you were a state rep, right? You were
- 30:31Speaker 24: a first selectman.
- 30:32Speaker 1: So, you know, you've done the campaigning and all of that.
- 30:37Speaker 1: What got you out of that?
- 30:39Speaker 24: Well, the fact that I was going to be exposed
- 30:42Speaker 24: for being a dirtbag, you know? You want an honest answer?
- 30:46Speaker 24: I was drunk doing terrible things, disrespecting my My reputation
- 30:51Speaker 24: and my family and my community. And I didn't want
- 30:54Speaker 24: to own up to it. And what I did is
- 30:55Speaker 24: I ran away from all that and I opened a
- 30:58Speaker 24: hemp farm, a 40-acre hemp farm.
- 31:00Speaker 1: That's the truth. And I love that that's the truth.
- 31:03Speaker 1: And there's– And what's funny, when you say it like that,
- 31:08Speaker 1: it's so– it puts me at ease. It's like it's
- 31:12Speaker 1: real and it's a real problem.
- 31:14Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 31:15Speaker 1: And you dealt with it and you won.
- 31:17Speaker 24: Listen, I was at the statehouse. I was drunk every
- 31:20Speaker 24: day I was at the statehouse. Every day that I
- 31:22Speaker 24: served in office, I was drunk.
- 31:24Speaker 27: Wow.
- 31:25Speaker 24: I was drunk every day.
- 31:26Speaker 25: Wow.
- 31:26Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 31:27Speaker 24: I served in public office most of my days. It
- 31:30Speaker 24: started off in the morning by mid-afternoon.
- 31:32Speaker 1: What was your choice? A drink? Yeah.
- 31:35Speaker 24: Well, I like a nice bourbon.
- 31:38Speaker 1: So this is like first thing in the morning, bourbon?
- 31:39Speaker 10: No, no, no.
- 31:40Speaker 1: I would start with a.
- 31:41Speaker 24: Couple beers in the morning. That would just get my
- 31:42Speaker 24: tummy right.
- 31:43Speaker 18: Okay.
- 31:45Speaker 24: Then I'd go into it. But then, of course, vanity.
- 31:48Speaker 24: I'd want to drink some of the lighter drinks for
- 31:50Speaker 24: vodka and McUltra. So you don't want to look sloppy
- 31:54Speaker 24: if you're an alcoholic.
- 31:55Speaker 1: No, of course not.
- 31:55Speaker 24: Because by the time you're drunk at the end of
- 31:57Speaker 24: the night, you're already sloppy enough.
- 31:58Speaker 1: You don't want to look sloppy.
- 31:59Speaker 24: But I would pretty much say I got up to
- 32:02Speaker 24: my worst drinking about a half a handle a day.
- 32:05Speaker 24: And probably two or three pot cookies.
- 32:07Speaker 1: Oh, my God.
- 32:08Speaker 24: That was my appetite every day.
- 32:10Speaker 1: So this ultimately unraveled. Oh, yeah.
- 32:13Speaker 24: I went right to the edge, bro. I consider suicide.
- 32:16Speaker 24: I talked about it right here in this very studio.
- 32:18Speaker 24: I mean, I went to the edge.
- 32:20Speaker 1: And listen.
- 32:21Speaker 24: You know what the beautiful part about this conversation is?
- 32:24Speaker 24: I'm not being coy.
- 32:25Speaker 1: No, that's what's beautiful about it. I got it.
- 32:29Speaker 24: I know what it's like to go through that experience,
- 32:31Speaker 24: and I know a lot of us think, oh, it
- 32:32Speaker 24: can never happen to me. I never thought it would
- 32:34Speaker 24: happen to me. I was a correctional officer for 21 years.
- 32:36Speaker 26: Yeah.
- 32:37Speaker 24: I retired from the same prison my mom was serving
- 32:39Speaker 24: time at when I was a kid. I talk about
- 32:41Speaker 24: that publicly. I'm just going to say, you were a
- 32:43Speaker 24: corrections officer, right?
- 32:44Speaker 20: Yeah.
- 32:45Speaker 1: So you know right from wrong.
- 32:47Speaker 4: Oh, yeah.
- 32:47Speaker 1: And still, this is the power of it. This is
- 32:50Speaker 1: the power of addiction.
- 32:51Speaker 24: And still, you couldn't beat it at that time. Listen,
- 32:55Speaker 24: you know what it comes down to? I think the
- 32:56Speaker 24: alcohol comes to excuse the behavior after you already made
- 33:00Speaker 24: a decision.
- 33:01Speaker 1: Gotcha.
- 33:01Speaker 24: So there's somewhat of ownership without the intoxication that we
- 33:05Speaker 24: need to take. And I did that. Like I took
- 33:07Speaker 24: ownership without the alcohol, and then I brought in the excuse,
- 33:11Speaker 24: if need be, to put it in that category, of
- 33:13Speaker 24: how I got there. But, no, the reality is I
- 33:15Speaker 24: was the one making the bad decisions. And I think
- 33:17Speaker 24: that's with everyone in life, right? I mean, you know
- 33:19Speaker 24: right from wrong. Humans are designed with a couple qualities,
- 33:23Speaker 24: and one is we know right from wrong. We choose
- 33:25Speaker 24: to do wrong when we do.
- 33:27Speaker 1: Here with Kevin Allen and, you know, giving a little
- 33:30Speaker 1: bit of– an update on, on all his incredible new
- 33:35Speaker 1: ventures that he's doing and, and the past would brought
- 33:38Speaker 1: him here right now. And, and, and it's funny, I
- 33:41Speaker 1: didn't know some of that stuff and I've, you know,
- 33:43Speaker 1: we've talked a lot, you know, and, and that some
- 33:46Speaker 1: of that stuff is, and that's super powerful, man. And, and,
- 33:49Speaker 1: and actually it, it, it framed for me, it frames
- 33:52Speaker 1: you in a different way. It really does. It gives,
- 33:53Speaker 1: it gives me a little bit, uh, I hope that
- 33:59Speaker 1: someone like the story I shared earlier, at some point
- 34:02Speaker 1: maybe they can get out of their own way because
- 34:04Speaker 1: you've obviously got out of your own way, and you're
- 34:06Speaker 1: doing incredible things for the community.
- 34:09Speaker 24: You really are. Listen, at the end of the day,
- 34:11Speaker 24: if we can help somebody, I drive them around a lot,
- 34:14Speaker 24: as some know, and I publicly haven't talked too much
- 34:16Speaker 24: about it, but I'm so close to actually leaving my
- 34:19Speaker 24: current career, which is I've been driving Uber since last December.
- 34:23Speaker 24: I was just telling this story last night.
- 34:25Speaker 1: Uber's fun.
- 34:26Speaker 24: I went to Randy Travis, right? And I texted one
- 34:27Speaker 24: of my buddies, Glenn Templeton, who used to be a big,
- 34:30Speaker 24: he's open for Garth Brooks, right? And he himself shared
- 34:34Speaker 24: his alcohol with me, his issue. A credible interview. He
- 34:38Speaker 24: asked me not to ever publish it, and I'm not.
- 34:40Speaker 24: But the point is, I was thinking about all these things,
- 34:42Speaker 24: these journeys and everything, and all of a sudden I realized, like,
- 34:45Speaker 24: God's got such a plan for us, man. You know,
- 34:47Speaker 24: even in the worst of your days, if you can
- 34:49Speaker 24: just find that glimmer of hope, man, you can see
- 34:51Speaker 24: something bright. And I was able to see something bright,
- 34:53Speaker 24: so I've already won. I've already won. I'm not sitting
- 34:57Speaker 24: here bragging. I'm saying I'm alive, man. I'm smiling. I
- 35:00Speaker 24: got a granddaughter.
- 35:01Speaker 1: Trust me, the vibe in this room, for those of
- 35:04Speaker 1: you out there, the vibe in this room is exactly
- 35:06Speaker 1: how he's speaking it right now. He's happy, positive, you know,
- 35:11Speaker 1: sort of committed to doing some community good. That is
- 35:14Speaker 1: the vibe in this room. He's not just saying it.
- 35:16Speaker 1: I'm feeling it.
- 35:17Speaker 24: Well, you know, Shana, who's my wife, and she owns
- 35:20Speaker 24: a beautiful little company here in New London County, and
- 35:23Speaker 24: She's busy. Her and I came into together. We both
- 35:25Speaker 24: have alcohol addiction. We both came into our lives together
- 35:28Speaker 24: and we've watched our lives change together. And, you know,
- 35:31Speaker 24: that partnership is something that I think I always needed
- 35:33Speaker 24: in my life that I never could find in somebody.
- 35:36Speaker 24: And that's a beautiful part of where I am today.
- 35:38Speaker 24: I just have so many good things. I just want
- 35:40Speaker 24: to help people. But driving around, I see so many people.
- 35:42Speaker 24: desperately seeking help and needing help, that it really hurts
- 35:46Speaker 24: me in my heart. And I don't care what they are.
- 35:48Speaker 24: I don't care what they're— When you say people that—
- 35:50Speaker 24: Homeless people, people I meet on the streets.
- 35:53Speaker 1: And you know a little bit about that, yes.
- 35:54Speaker 24: Yeah, I can smell it a mile away, you know.
- 35:55Speaker 24: I mean, people hop in my car. You know, I
- 35:57Speaker 24: was getting to the point, I drive Uber. I've been
- 35:59Speaker 24: driving Uber, and I brought Glenn Templin out because when
- 36:01Speaker 24: I came back, I was going to help Glenn with
- 36:03Speaker 24: his— he' s going to be working out of Tennessee for a while.
- 36:05Speaker 24: And I came home last December from that trip, and
- 36:08Speaker 24: I was going to get ready to start working with him.
- 36:10Speaker 24: And I said to Shane, I said, I'm done. I'm
- 36:11Speaker 24: working on a project for me this year. Nobody else.
- 36:14Speaker 24: And that's when I started working on the drink project.
- 36:16Speaker 24: And there's there's you know, that that gave me the
- 36:19Speaker 24: chance to get out there. But the point is, then
- 36:21Speaker 24: I started meeting people in the street and I'm like, oh,
- 36:23Speaker 24: my gosh, this is this is a beautiful opportunity. I've
- 36:25Speaker 24: had more people. I have people right now, prostitutes. drug dealers,
- 36:31Speaker 24: drug addicted people, alcohol addicted people. They text me and
- 36:34Speaker 24: tell me their updates. They're living better and cleaner since
- 36:37Speaker 24: I've met them. Not because of me, but because they
- 36:39Speaker 24: had an Uber driver.
- 36:41Speaker 28: Yeah, man.
- 36:41Speaker 1: Yeah. That's true.
- 36:42Speaker 10: I know.
- 36:43Speaker 1: Listen, I know all about that. And I know that
- 36:45Speaker 1: it is, uh, you know, if there.
- 36:47Speaker 24: Was a TV show, the Uber driver, it's in work,
- 36:50Speaker 24: it's in, it's in progress.
- 36:51Speaker 1: I'm just saying it's in progress. Very interesting. I know
- 36:54Speaker 1: there's like, you know, uh, you know, you know, Coffee with,
- 36:57Speaker 1: you know, like Jerry Seinfeld had the coffee. But the
- 37:00Speaker 1: Uber driver show and the things that we are told
- 37:04Speaker 1: are just amazing.
- 37:05Speaker 24: It's amazing.
- 37:07Speaker 1: They just open up, and some of them are literally
- 37:12Speaker 1: at their worst moments, and they just jump into your car,
- 37:14Speaker 1: and they just tell you.
- 37:16Speaker 24: They just feel like you're their counselor. The Uber driver
- 37:19Speaker 24: is the new bartender concept. You know what I mean?
- 37:21Speaker 24: Like you used to go and talk to the counselor,
- 37:23Speaker 24: the bartender.
- 37:24Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 37:25Speaker 24: And it's interesting because I didn't think going into it,
- 37:27Speaker 24: it would be such an opportunity. But my chops, right,
- 37:30Speaker 24: my ability to speak, you know, on camera or whatever,
- 37:33Speaker 24: that's where you hone in on those skills, too. So
- 37:35Speaker 24: I'm interviewing. As soon as somebody gets in the car,
- 37:37Speaker 24: I do the first three minutes of interview. And I
- 37:40Speaker 24: can feel their emotions.
- 37:41Speaker 1: And I'm like, I won't bother. Some people want to talk.
- 37:43Speaker 1: Some people don't. Some people just don't even give you
- 37:45Speaker 1: a chance.
- 37:45Speaker 24: So you respect them.
- 37:46Speaker 1: It's awesome, though.
- 37:47Speaker 4: It's awesome.
- 37:47Speaker 24: So I love that part of it. And, you know,
- 37:49Speaker 24: I love the fact that, you know, technology also. We
- 37:52Speaker 24: talked a little bit about that, how, you know. I'm
- 37:54Speaker 24: working on an app. I mean, I'm working off an app.
- 37:57Speaker 1: I love that you've got so many things in the works.
- 37:59Speaker 24: I'm saying I work with the Uber app, right? That's
- 38:02Speaker 24: a technology-driven business.
- 38:03Speaker 5: Yes, yes.
- 38:04Speaker 24: And so think about all the world that has changed
- 38:06Speaker 24: so much for us and us old guys in the
- 38:08Speaker 24: room over 50. I think you're older than your.
- 38:11Speaker 1: Brother, right?
- 38:12Speaker 29: No.
- 38:12Speaker 24: I say that to you all the time.
- 38:13Speaker 1: I tease you. But you know what I mean.
- 38:16Speaker 24: We're all in our 50s, dude, right? We've seen so
- 38:18Speaker 24: many changes in technology.
- 38:19Speaker 1: Oh, I know.
- 38:20Speaker 24: I love technology. AI, by the way, and I heard Tom,
- 38:22Speaker 24: and I love Tom Cantone. I love what he said
- 38:25Speaker 24: about all the things are so spot on. But I
- 38:27Speaker 24: watched Randy Travis talk about how they used Randy Travis'
- 38:31Speaker 24: voice to recreate his last album. Legitimately, his sound, his voice.
- 38:36Speaker 24: And they played it last night at the show down
- 38:38Speaker 24: at the Guard.
- 38:39Speaker 5: Amazing.
- 38:40Speaker 24: Shout out to Gary for those tickets, by the way.
- 38:41Speaker 1: Thank you, Gary.
- 38:42Speaker 24: But the amazing part about technology is it brings people together.
- 38:45Speaker 17: We just.
- 38:46Speaker 24: Unfortunately, some of us are scared of it, and I
- 38:48Speaker 24: get it, but I love it, man.
- 38:50Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, the AI technology is, you know, it's
- 38:54Speaker 1: a double-edged sword, right? And it has, you know, and
- 38:58Speaker 1: you just have to be careful and walk the right
- 39:01Speaker 1: line because at any point in any industry, any genre,
- 39:06Speaker 1: it can just go awry, right?
- 39:08Speaker 24: Did you think when you were a kid that you'd
- 39:10Speaker 24: be able to hit a button on a phone? Our
- 39:12Speaker 24: phones were on the wall with cords, right? We didn't
- 39:16Speaker 24: have any of this vision.
- 39:17Speaker 2: No.
- 39:17Speaker 24: That was like so spaceship future.
- 39:19Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely. The whole thing is futuristic. And it's getting
- 39:26Speaker 1: so much better, so much faster. Every three months, I
- 39:29Speaker 1: think it doubles. or something like this. And it's just
- 39:34Speaker 1: in just a short order of time, it's going to
- 39:36Speaker 1: be so powerful. I mean, like, you know. AI, artificial intelligence, right?
- 39:43Speaker 1: Is it, you know, at some point soon, it's going
- 39:46Speaker 1: to be, you know, above our.
- 39:47Speaker 30: Intelligence, right?
- 39:48Speaker 5: Oh, it is.
- 39:48Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah. You know, and I don't mean that
- 39:51Speaker 1: in the way it processes numbers. I mean, its ability
- 39:53Speaker 1: to think, you know, and, you know, some people say,
- 39:57Speaker 1: call it what you will, that, you know, it, you know,
- 40:00Speaker 1: we have birthed. A new form of life.
- 40:04Speaker 6: Mm-hmm.
- 40:05Speaker 10: Mm-hmm.
- 40:05Speaker 1: You know.
- 40:07Speaker 24: You heard me talking to my app, right?
- 40:08Speaker 17: It's crazy.
- 40:08Speaker 1: In the sense of a binary code, ones and zeros,
- 40:10Speaker 1: it now has an ability to think for itself.
- 40:14Speaker 24: I went to module high. I don't know what binary
- 40:16Speaker 24: code is, but whatever that means.
- 40:18Speaker 1: And you ever see the matrix? Yeah, I got you. Anyway,
- 40:22Speaker 1: so that is, you know, a new form of life. So,
- 40:25Speaker 1: you know, here's the interesting thing. Mm-hmm. So if it
- 40:29Speaker 1: begins to think for itself, if it begins to align
- 40:33Speaker 1: itself with stuff and it becomes real in every which
- 40:36Speaker 1: way but loose, can you kill it?
- 40:42Speaker 24: You know, remember the movie War Games?
- 40:45Speaker 1: Does it become protected?
- 40:47Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 40:48Speaker 1: How does that work? Who controls it, right? Who controls it? Like,
- 40:51Speaker 1: you know, does it become, you know, once we deem
- 40:54Speaker 1: it its own entity, you know, does it have rights?
- 41:00Speaker 24: It's going to be interesting, interesting times ahead. I mean,
- 41:02Speaker 24: I'm embracing it right now, but these are all things
- 41:04Speaker 24: that I also agree with. Randy Travis' wife talked about
- 41:07Speaker 24: going and testifying in Congress because as much as they
- 41:10Speaker 24: used it, they don't want to have it abused. And
- 41:12Speaker 24: I think that's an important part.
- 41:13Speaker 1: Well, and that's already happening. I mean, you've seen China
- 41:17Speaker 1: and other– they have these– they have the Terminators rolling out.
- 41:20Speaker 1: And they're like 101s now, but give it five years
- 41:25Speaker 1: and literally Arnold Schwarzenegger will be walking around.
- 41:27Speaker 24: Isn't that crazy? Like I feel like we're living in
- 41:29Speaker 24: a movie. Like you said, The Matrix or something like that.
- 41:32Speaker 17: It's crazy times.
- 41:33Speaker 1: Yeah, it's like– so– Anyway, we are here. Kevin, thank
- 41:36Speaker 1: you so much for joining us today.
- 41:38Speaker 24: Yeah, man. It's been great, man.
- 41:39Speaker 1: And I think I'm... We've got to fix that. Anyway,
- 41:43Speaker 1: we're going to have some technical problems. We'll be back.
- 41:45Speaker 1: Stick around if you want with Hayward. You can chat
- 41:47Speaker 1: with us here. And we'll be back. Thank you.
- 41:49Speaker 24: Thank you.

- 44:19Speaker 16: And here's Smith-Machar through a translator.
- 44:21Speaker 35: When I was on the ground, I realized that the
- 44:23Speaker 35: aircraft is going down. And I told myself, this is
- 44:27Speaker 35: the last push, Smith. The door is right there. And
- 44:30Speaker 35: I was still getting hit, but I opened the door.
- 44:32Speaker 16: That allowed the passengers to see what happened.
- 44:34Speaker 34: And they rushed in, subdued the attacker, and safely landed

- 49:58Speaker 1: All right, we are, oh, already happening. Hold on, let
- 50:01Speaker 1: me see if I can just... tweak this here and
- 50:04Speaker 1: get it going. Maybe that helps. All right. So we
- 50:07Speaker 1: are back. Steve Elsie here. And I am with Hayward Gatch,
- 50:10Speaker 1: who is joining me again. And Kevin Allen is sticking
- 50:12Speaker 1: around for the conversation and, uh, off air here. Uh,
- 50:16Speaker 1: you know, I was, uh, uh, told that Hayward, uh,
- 50:21Speaker 1: kind of said that, uh, this is going.
- 50:23Speaker 2: To be a problem.
- 50:25Speaker 1: Uh, I think it might need a new bike. Uh,
- 50:28Speaker 1: Hold on one second. Standby. Standby. Standby.
- 50:31Speaker 30: Is this auto-tune?
- 50:32Speaker 1: I don't know. Maybe that's auto-tune. We're going to work
- 50:34Speaker 1: on that right now. But Hayward was saying that he
- 50:39Speaker 1: also had his demons with the bottle. And Kevin and
- 50:45Speaker 1: Hayward sort of just bonded. And they just met today.
- 50:48Speaker 1: And I thought that was pretty amazing. Hayward, welcome aboard.
- 50:52Speaker 24: What's happening?
- 50:52Speaker 30: Hey, happy to be here.
- 50:53Speaker 41: And, yeah, your first story about the gentleman who was
- 50:58Speaker 41: in the apartment and had a relapse so severe that
- 51:01Speaker 41: it ended up in his hospitalization, that's one thing that
- 51:05Speaker 41: Kevin and I touched on a few minutes ago. This
- 51:08Speaker 41: drinking thing, it has a known trajectory, and a lot
- 51:12Speaker 41: of people might think themselves– immune to that trajectory. A
- 51:16Speaker 41: lot of people might think that, oh, well, I'm just
- 51:20Speaker 41: going to do a little bit here, a little bit there.
- 51:23Speaker 41: But you're, perhaps in a very literal way, dancing with
- 51:27Speaker 41: the devil.
- 51:27Speaker 30: On this thing.
- 51:28Speaker 41: It's interesting you talk about the demons of it. There's
- 51:31Speaker 41: a theological angle you can really get into it with.
- 51:34Speaker 1: Thus they call it spirits, right?
- 51:37Speaker 9: Indeed.
- 51:37Speaker 1: Isn't that why?
- 51:39Speaker 30: I've heard yes.
- 51:40Speaker 41: It dates back to the Middle Ages and does have
- 51:43Speaker 41: that angle to it. But as far as drinking goes,
- 51:47Speaker 41: it's something I got into relatively late in life for
- 51:50Speaker 41: people of my generation, but not particularly late in terms
- 51:53Speaker 41: of life. I didn't start drinking until I was 21,
- 51:57Speaker 41: and I did it partially socially, but very quickly found
- 52:01Speaker 41: that I had a way of relieving, at least in
- 52:05Speaker 41: a temporary way, the chronic pain. Not directly COVID-related, but
- 52:10Speaker 41: just stress-related.
- 52:11Speaker 10: Sure.
- 52:13Speaker 30: I guess you could call it COVID-related because I.
- 52:16Speaker 41: Immediately had to start up a business with very little
- 52:19Speaker 41: warning because this whole pandemic thing happened. And my wife
- 52:23Speaker 41: was a dental hygienist, and people avoid dental care in.
- 52:25Speaker 30: Good times, right? People are like, oh, I don't want
- 52:27Speaker 30: to go.
- 52:28Speaker 41: So when we have this mystery virus from overseas coming,
- 52:31Speaker 41: people are like, I'm not going to the dentist. So
- 52:33Speaker 41: she gets laid off immediately, and I have to figure
- 52:35Speaker 41: out how to spin something up very quickly.
- 52:36Speaker 30: And that's got its stresses.
- 52:38Speaker 41: And so I leaned on the old crutch in order
- 52:41Speaker 41: to deal with those stresses.
- 52:43Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 52:44Speaker 41: And it became very, very severe. I'm talking all day
- 52:48Speaker 41: long drinking, every day. And while I was able, I suppose,
- 52:54Speaker 41: to hold it together, that does not make it safe
- 52:56Speaker 41: and that does not make it good because you keep
- 53:00Speaker 41: going down that road. You keep not dealing with those
- 53:04Speaker 41: problems and you... Like anything that you put in your body,
- 53:08Speaker 41: it starts to develop a tolerance. And over time, it
- 53:11Speaker 41: gets worse and worse and worse. And you drink more and.
- 53:13Speaker 30: More and more.
- 53:15Speaker 41: In politics, we call it a radicalization spiral. But you
- 53:18Speaker 41: have a similar effect in addiction.
- 53:20Speaker 1: And so.
- 53:22Speaker 41: I was in a very, very bad way. And to
- 53:26Speaker 41: reference Kevin's story and so many more around, it ended
- 53:31Speaker 41: up being a religious thing for me that broke the demon,
- 53:34Speaker 41: so to speak. So my wife and I at the
- 53:38Speaker 41: time were sort of dabbling with Christianity, and she came across,
- 53:42Speaker 41: I think it's 1 Corinthians 6, verse 10 maybe. It
- 53:47Speaker 41: talks about all the people that want to inherit the
- 53:48Speaker 41: kingdom of God, and one of them was the drunkard.
- 53:51Speaker 41: And so as she was saying it, I was drinking.
- 53:53Speaker 41: I was like, oh, all right. And so I just
- 53:56Speaker 41: poured it out. And I didn't drink since. And where
- 54:02Speaker 41: did that will come from? Where did that strength come from?
- 54:06Speaker 41: I'm not sure because I certainly didn't have it beforehand.
- 54:11Speaker 41: And that was a really powerful moment that I didn't
- 54:14Speaker 41: necessarily have the conceptual framework to describe at the time.
- 54:18Speaker 30: But I was like, wow, that was that was different.
- 54:22Speaker 41: I just didn't think that was possible to suddenly be
- 54:25Speaker 41: relieved of something that had controlled, and I kid you not,
- 54:28Speaker 41: every waking moment of my life. That's weird and powerful
- 54:34Speaker 41: and delightful. And that was about two years ago. And
- 54:39Speaker 41: this is a somewhat humorous story. The only time since
- 54:42Speaker 41: that alcohol has touched my lips is when a raccoon
- 54:45Speaker 41: sneezed in my face. And I was so worried about
- 54:49Speaker 41: the possibility of rabies that I ran inside and I
- 54:52Speaker 41: was like, ah, we don't have any alcohol in the house.
- 54:55Speaker 41: I grabbed the rubbing alcohol and started rubbing it on
- 54:57Speaker 41: my face and like swishing it. But guess what? No
- 55:01Speaker 41: desire to continue, right? Like the desire to keep drinking
- 55:05Speaker 41: isn't there. I didn't want to get rabies.
- 55:08Speaker 1: Now, Kevin, did you– Did you have that moment as
- 55:11Speaker 1: well where it's like, as Hayward's saying, it's just like
- 55:14Speaker 1: one day, either the strength from within or some power outside.
- 55:19Speaker 1: How did you get to that situation?
- 55:21Speaker 24: December 17, 2022. I didn't want to live anymore. I
- 55:25Speaker 24: went out into the woods. I shared this story right
- 55:27Speaker 24: here in this very studio, I don't know, about a
- 55:29Speaker 24: year ago maybe. And God saved me. And I give
- 55:33Speaker 24: all glory. I mean, that moment, I actually stopped swearing
- 55:37Speaker 24: for two years. I stopped watching porn. I stopped cheating.
- 55:40Speaker 24: I stopped lying. I stopped everything that I had no,
- 55:43Speaker 24: that brought me to the hole I was in. And
- 55:46Speaker 24: that was really because of alcohol. And that was the
- 55:49Speaker 24: easiest part is knowing. And I've gone to bars, restaurants,
- 55:52Speaker 24: I'm in, you know, whatever. I have no, like you,
- 55:54Speaker 24: I have no triggers, right? Because, you know, once you
- 55:56Speaker 24: get a strength like that, you believe in it like that,
- 55:59Speaker 24: you see it firsthand like that, you don't need to
- 56:01Speaker 24: second guess it anymore.
- 56:03Speaker 1: Amazing. I mean, I, you know, I'm listening to both
- 56:06Speaker 1: of you who, uh, I respect both of you quite well. And,
- 56:10Speaker 1: and it's, and I know how, how amazing you both
- 56:14Speaker 1: are now. And to think of both of you in
- 56:16Speaker 1: that situation, in those scenarios where the bottle literally rules
- 56:23Speaker 1: your life. And it's hard for me to fathom. I mean,
- 56:28Speaker 1: I listen, I drink, you know, But I don't have
- 56:34Speaker 1: the demon word, as you said, Hayward, all day, every day.
- 56:38Speaker 1: I just can't even imagine waking up wanting a beer.
- 56:42Speaker 1: I can't. I can't do it. Sure, a night after whatever,
- 56:45Speaker 1: but I just can't understand that, and that's part of...
- 56:54Speaker 1: And I'm glad I can understand it, to be honest
- 56:56Speaker 1: with you.
- 56:56Speaker 30: Yeah, absolutely.
- 56:59Speaker 1: But having seen it now firsthand and hearing it now
- 57:03Speaker 1: in studio from you guys, I mean, there's a reason
- 57:06Speaker 1: why they call it spirits. It gets in you and
- 57:08Speaker 1: it really becomes you.
- 57:10Speaker 30: Yeah, absolutely.
- 57:11Speaker 41: And, you know, people have drank since they figured out
- 57:15Speaker 41: how to eat the fermented fruit off the ground.
- 57:18Speaker 30: Sat there a little bit too long.
- 57:21Speaker 41: That's been a part of our conversation. societal culture for
- 57:24Speaker 41: an extremely long time. But with anything, the tendency and
- 57:28Speaker 41: possibility for abuse is there. And alcohol is one of
- 57:31Speaker 41: our oldest things we've struggled with. And, you know, Jesus
- 57:35Speaker 41: drank wine.
- 57:35Speaker 30: Like, people drink. It happens.
- 57:39Speaker 41: But there's a tendency that you can open yourself up
- 57:43Speaker 41: to that if you're a certain kind of person, especially
- 57:46Speaker 41: in my case, an arrogant person, that is really easy
- 57:50Speaker 41: for something to surprise you. you know, again, attending in
- 57:53Speaker 41: the theological direction, a lot of those architectures of temptation
- 57:59Speaker 41: are subtle and they always make you feel like you're
- 58:02Speaker 41: in control until you're not.
- 58:04Speaker 21: Yeah.
- 58:04Speaker 30: And that's, that's that slippery slope.
- 58:06Speaker 27: Yeah. Yep.
- 58:08Speaker 25: Yep.
- 58:08Speaker 41: And, and once you're in, especially with a lot of
- 58:11Speaker 41: the addictive tendencies, like the ones that have a chemical
- 58:14Speaker 41: angle to them, that's really hard to break away from.
- 58:17Speaker 30: And, Just like that, he'd lost.
- 58:19Speaker 1: So let me ask you. So you broke that habit
- 58:21Speaker 1: in both of you guys. Was it replaced with something else?
- 58:26Speaker 41: You know, in my case, not so much. I mean,
- 58:28Speaker 41: I guess you could say replaced by going to church
- 58:30Speaker 41: and stuff.
- 58:31Speaker 1: Okay. So that was the replacement, right?
- 58:34Speaker 9: Well, yeah.
- 58:34Speaker 41: So, like, there's—I don't remember precisely where it is. Perhaps
- 58:37Speaker 41: Kevin can correct me here. But somewhere is referenced the phrase,
- 58:41Speaker 41: the peace beyond all understanding. And— I think it's so
- 58:46Speaker 41: important that it's described that way because not only is
- 58:49Speaker 41: it hard to understand unless you experience it, it's hard
- 58:52Speaker 41: to even describe. It exists in a language older than
- 58:56Speaker 41: words in such a way that you can't necessarily use
- 58:59Speaker 41: these man-made collections of syllables to encapsulate this way.
- 59:04Speaker 30: Of being, but it's there.
- 59:06Speaker 28: Yeah.
- 59:07Speaker 30: And so you end up just sort of flailing your
- 59:08Speaker 30: arm saying, look, this thing, it's complicated.
- 59:10Speaker 1: Yeah um.
- 59:12Speaker 41: But yeah it's it's to have relieved that entirely and
- 59:18Speaker 41: is it impossible that at some point in my life
- 59:20Speaker 41: something might come across that will knock me back down
- 59:23Speaker 41: again that's life yeah that's life right But at this point,
- 59:28Speaker 41: I feel so much sharper. Once you get past, I
- 59:31Speaker 41: think it's a month or so, your brain really does
- 59:33Speaker 41: a good job at starting to rebuild and reset a
- 59:37Speaker 41: lot of things. So once you get out past that,
- 59:40Speaker 41: even your REM sleep, for example, gets messed up by drinking,
- 59:43Speaker 41: which then often motivates more drinking beyond that. And so
- 59:47Speaker 41: getting out from that cycle, things start to change. They
- 59:52Speaker 41: change neurochemically, they change behaviorally, they change spiritually, and that
- 59:57Speaker 41: has been really important for me.
- 59:59Speaker 1: Kevin, how about you? Is there a replacement there?
- 1:00:02Speaker 24: You know, I was thinking it's interesting also a good
- 1:00:04Speaker 24: point to be made, and I don't know if we
- 1:00:06Speaker 24: planned on making this. I hope we didn't shift the
- 1:00:08Speaker 24: topic here too much.
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: No, this is good stuff.
- 1:00:10Speaker 24: It's a great topic for people to hear because it's real.
- 1:00:12Speaker 24: But I also know that people can drink without a problem,
- 1:00:15Speaker 24: and I also respect that. Like my issue doesn't mean
- 1:00:18Speaker 24: it's your issue or whatever. And so for me, it
- 1:00:21Speaker 24: was so– I was able to get such clarity that
- 1:00:24Speaker 24: I knew– looking back to that lifestyle, looking back to
- 1:00:28Speaker 24: that desire, would just bring me back into.
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: That hole again.
- 1:00:31Speaker 24: And I just, it was like that, you know, the
- 1:00:34Speaker 24: sun comes out kind of thing. And all of a sudden, like, oh,
- 1:00:36Speaker 24: I was clear-headed, right? And as soon as my head
- 1:00:38Speaker 24: got clear, it took a few months, right? But as
- 1:00:41Speaker 24: soon as it did, and there's a wet brain. And
- 1:00:43Speaker 24: I will say, you know, people can talk about this.
- 1:00:46Speaker 24: I did not do the meetings, AA meetings specifically. I've
- 1:00:49Speaker 24: gone to a few. To me, I was fortunate to
- 1:00:52Speaker 24: have somebody in my life that could personally counsel me.
- 1:00:55Speaker 24: who had some experience and it really worked.
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: It really worked.
- 1:00:58Speaker 24: And I never looked back to that. You know, I never,
- 1:01:00Speaker 24: I go into places so it doesn't have any triggers
- 1:01:03Speaker 24: for me anymore. I don't know how to really answer
- 1:01:04Speaker 24: because I feel like if I even entertain that question,
- 1:01:07Speaker 24: I'll probably try thinking about things and I'm good where
- 1:01:09Speaker 24: I am and I don't need to think about it anymore.
- 1:01:11Speaker 35: Yeah.
- 1:01:11Speaker 24: I'm just living my life clean.
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: Yeah, no, that's good.
- 1:01:14Speaker 24: And I'm not opposed to that. You know, alcohol, people
- 1:01:17Speaker 24: use cannabis smartly. They use other products in a way
- 1:01:19Speaker 24: that they don't ruin their lives.
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: You know what?
- 1:01:22Speaker 24: I'm okay with that. If it helps you get through
- 1:01:24Speaker 24: life and you're productive and you're a good person, if
- 1:01:27Speaker 24: you're a bad person, you're out there driving drunk. Well,
- 1:01:29Speaker 24: you're not right.
- 1:01:29Speaker 40: Right.
- 1:01:30Speaker 24: You know what I mean? Or intoxicated. You're not good.
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: That's not good.
- 1:01:34Speaker 27: Yeah.
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: Well, I mean, and you know, I, again, Steve Elsie
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: here with Haywood Gatch and Kevin Allen. And we are just,
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: you know, the conversation has taken on its own, its
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: own life here. I don't, you know, this wasn't planned
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: and how we're, we're discussing this today, but it sort
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: of is the topic of the day, maybe sparked by
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: my story in the beginning. Um, you know, uh, when
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: you said you have somebody personal that has helped you,
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: I feel that at the, at the shelter, you know,
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: my clients, that is me to them, right? Not all
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: of them. I've obviously, I've, I've been able to, to help, but,
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: but most of them, and it's a continual, um, job
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: it doesn't it's not a day it's not a week
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: it's it's 365 days a year of continuous monitoring um
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: when they have an addiction like they do.
- 1:02:27Speaker 24: And you pair mental health i mean mental health and
- 1:02:29Speaker 24: you pair that.
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: Yes that's there's there's a lot of things that go
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: along with it but um you know that's that's what
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: happens and you know in your case kevin it entered
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: into into politics and And I'm sure Haywood's— I mean.
- 1:02:43Speaker 24: Haywood's qualified to talk about politics. I listen to him
- 1:02:45Speaker 24: on the show.
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: No, we can transition over to— Let's talk about all
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: the alcoholics in politics.
- 1:02:49Speaker 9: That's what we need to do.
- 1:02:50Speaker 24: Start with me, by the way. I'll be the first one.
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: Speaking of alcohol, let's talk about this administration.
- 1:02:54Speaker 24: Hey!
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: Hey!
- 1:02:55Speaker 41: Yeah, I mean, alcoholics in politics is not new.
- 1:03:00Speaker 9: No.
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: Alcoholics and politics.
- 1:03:04Speaker 24: That's a good podcast.
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: No, but Hayward, obviously this has been a great conversation,
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: but you have lots to say about this world and
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: the way it's operating right now. What's new on your
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: mind with that?
- 1:03:19Speaker 41: Boy, the flood the zone strategy really still is... Very,
- 1:03:22Speaker 41: very much happening.
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: I love what you said last week, just by the way,
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: the permissions.
- 1:03:26Speaker 41: Oh, yeah, the permission structure.
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: The permission structure. And this is what I try to
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: tell folks, and they don't completely understand. And if you
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: missed last week, Hayward, can you just recap what the
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: permission structure is from Donald Trump and that?
- 1:03:41Speaker 41: It's sort of like what it sounds like, but it
- 1:03:43Speaker 41: comes down to this concept that If you push the
- 1:03:46Speaker 41: envelope in this administration, regardless of your politics, you can
- 1:03:49Speaker 41: certainly admit this administration has been pushing a lot of envelopes.
- 1:03:52Speaker 41: They've been testing the limits of their power, which, technically speaking,
- 1:03:57Speaker 41: is their right to push the limits of that power.
- 1:04:00Speaker 41: But it's dangerous territory, certainly in my opinion. But what
- 1:04:02Speaker 41: happens when you push the limits, you either hit a
- 1:04:06Speaker 41: brick wall or you get away with it. And when
- 1:04:09Speaker 41: you get away with it, that creates the permission structure.
- 1:04:12Speaker 41: That creates a precedent. You can use that word as well.
- 1:04:16Speaker 41: It creates a precedent for getting away with it in
- 1:04:19Speaker 41: the future. And when we surrender our principles, which I
- 1:04:24Speaker 41: would argue we've been doing for a very long time,
- 1:04:27Speaker 41: we get to places like where we're at now where
- 1:04:32Speaker 41: there are people in this administration who now reinvestigating Watergate
- 1:04:36Speaker 41: to find out if that was going too far, whereas
- 1:04:40Speaker 41: several decades ago that was a red line in the
- 1:04:43Speaker 41: sand of, well, we can't have this. And so that
- 1:04:46Speaker 41: diminishing baseline of what is acceptable, in my opinion, is
- 1:04:50Speaker 41: not helpful.
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: Did you see any of the Jack Smith— hearings recently you.
- 1:04:59Speaker 41: Know i'll tell you what i'm a little bit behind
- 1:05:01Speaker 41: on those because guess who's been working 12 hours.
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: Yeah no i well i say that because you know
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: you know speaking of permissions right so and you know
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: that's i know you know.
- 1:05:10Speaker 41: About jack right and that's sort of the whole point
- 1:05:12Speaker 41: though we many of us especially with this cost of
- 1:05:17Speaker 41: living crisis are working so much that that permission structure
- 1:05:22Speaker 41: starts to exist by default because we are too busy
- 1:05:26Speaker 41: to pay attention. Now, remember last time I said that
- 1:05:29Speaker 41: power derives their authority from the consent of the governed,
- 1:05:32Speaker 41: but you can short circuit that consent by keeping the
- 1:05:35Speaker 41: governed too busy, too distracted, fighting over each other constantly
- 1:05:39Speaker 41: in order to get away with just about everything.
- 1:05:42Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 1:05:43Speaker 41: We talked about the kitty litter in the bathroom thing
- 1:05:46Speaker 41: that ended up being some kind of a hoax, but
- 1:05:47Speaker 41: think about how much time we spend talking about that.
- 1:05:49Speaker 30: Think of how many.
- 1:05:50Speaker 41: Gigabytes worth of storage exists of people arguing about this
- 1:05:55Speaker 41: and multiply that times how many crises per day are
- 1:05:59Speaker 41: we arguing about and how many of them are completely
- 1:06:02Speaker 41: irrelevant to your daily life. How many distractions are out
- 1:06:06Speaker 41: there in order to make you miss what's actually happening?
- 1:06:11Speaker 30: That's scary.
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: Too many. You know, I talk to a lot of folks,
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: and that is exactly, I feel, this administration's MO. Like,
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: is they just put everything out there to keep us all,
- 1:06:27Speaker 1: you know, looking at the next and hottest story and
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: keeping us busy figuring out if that story is actually
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: real or not, while, with the other hand, doing exactly
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: what they want to do.
- 1:06:40Speaker 30: Absolutely.
- 1:06:41Speaker 41: And this abandonment of principle is something I've talked about
- 1:06:44Speaker 41: quite a bit over the years. You know, I was
- 1:06:47Speaker 41: very annoyed insofar as I can be annoyed about the
- 1:06:50Speaker 41: conduct of a complete stranger. I was annoyed to see
- 1:06:53Speaker 41: Hunter Biden having that overlap with Burisma Holdings, leveraging the
- 1:06:57Speaker 41: connections with his father in order to do a myriad
- 1:07:00Speaker 41: of corrupt things.
- 1:07:01Speaker 30: I was annoyed by that.
- 1:07:03Speaker 41: I was also annoyed, even though as a father I
- 1:07:05Speaker 41: get it, that he pardoned his son at the end
- 1:07:08Speaker 41: after saying he wouldn't.
- 1:07:09Speaker 24: Like, I get it.
- 1:07:10Speaker 41: Like, you have a son. However, it doesn't look good,
- 1:07:14Speaker 41: and it creates a permission structure for what we have now,
- 1:07:18Speaker 41: where the president's sons are making billions of dollars. We
- 1:07:22Speaker 41: have a president now making more than any president has
- 1:07:24Speaker 41: made in history, and you have The precedent set by
- 1:07:30Speaker 41: previous administrations, everything goes a little bit along the way.
- 1:07:33Speaker 41: So unless we have a serious reckoning, God only knows
- 1:07:36Speaker 41: what the next administration, regardless of who's in charge, is.
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: Going to hold. But as you said, it's been growing along.
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: But this administration, I would say— skipped a couple here, right?
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: It just jumped higher than the normal push. Am I
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: wrong about that?
- 1:07:54Speaker 41: Well, I think you're absolutely right in that, and that's
- 1:07:58Speaker 41: for a couple of reasons. First of all, I think
- 1:08:00Speaker 41: there's a parabolic slope here. In the same way that
- 1:08:03Speaker 41: you can fall into drinking, there's a point at which.
- 1:08:06Speaker 30: That slope gets so slippery that you just fall.
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: And how do you come back? How do we come
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: back from it? It's really hard. How do we do it?
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: Do we have to burn it all down and start again?
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: How does that work?
- 1:08:16Speaker 41: Well, I have my sympathies toward resistance generally. However, historically speaking,
- 1:08:21Speaker 41: politically speaking, anything now that we can do in a
- 1:08:25Speaker 41: society as large and complex and interconnected as this is
- 1:08:31Speaker 41: going to be an extremely hard lift. We sometimes build
- 1:08:35Speaker 41: so much architecture on top of us that kicking out
- 1:08:39Speaker 41: any one pillar or the other might crush us all.
- 1:08:43Speaker 33: But.
- 1:08:44Speaker 41: To not deviate from this trajectory is to get crushed
- 1:08:48Speaker 41: by default. And that's scary as well. But again, to
- 1:08:51Speaker 41: this president as well, something I think that is very
- 1:08:54Speaker 41: different that characterizes why we have such a meteoric expansion.
- 1:09:00Speaker 41: of government power, of pushing the limits, of seeing what
- 1:09:04Speaker 41: you can do. One of the main reasons we have
- 1:09:06Speaker 41: that is this is one of the first times we've
- 1:09:08Speaker 41: had a businessman as a president. Now, without casting any
- 1:09:12Speaker 41: aspersions at the president, despite my opinions, Think about the
- 1:09:17Speaker 41: way of being of a high-powered CEO. Think about how
- 1:09:21Speaker 41: you are used to having things happen at your command.
- 1:09:26Speaker 41: Think of how you are used to a relatively shorter
- 1:09:29Speaker 41: power structure. I mean, you have your board of directors,
- 1:09:31Speaker 41: but at the end of the day, a person in
- 1:09:32Speaker 41: his position can just say things and make them happen.
- 1:09:35Speaker 41: Now put that person into something with extremely intricate checks
- 1:09:40Speaker 41: and balances laid in place by our founders to specifically...
- 1:09:45Speaker 41: resist this tendency toward the concentration of power in the
- 1:09:49Speaker 41: executive versus having the co-equal branches. It's a fundamental conflict
- 1:09:55Speaker 41: of those person's value sets. And that's not to say
- 1:09:57Speaker 41: it's bad to be a businessman that has that type
- 1:10:00Speaker 41: of charge.
- 1:10:01Speaker 30: I might have my.
- 1:10:01Speaker 41: Opinions, but it's not necessarily bad to be a businessman
- 1:10:05Speaker 41: in that way. But you drop them into the presidency
- 1:10:08Speaker 41: and there's going to be a conflict. And when you
- 1:10:10Speaker 41: have someone who is as fundamentally sure of themselves as
- 1:10:13Speaker 41: the president, You're setting yourself up to have very interesting history.
- 1:10:20Speaker 9: You're not wrong.
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: You're not wrong. And it's just, you know, you vote
- 1:10:29Speaker 1: people in and you hope for change. And it seems
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: as though the process just happens. They get overrun by...
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: with pressures and end up deviating from their purpose of being,
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: you know, uh, somebody for the people. And that's where
- 1:10:50Speaker 1: corruption comes in. So either new laws or the, or, or,
- 1:10:56Speaker 1: or the money needs to be stripped out of it
- 1:10:58Speaker 1: or all of the above, because I don't see with
- 1:11:03Speaker 1: the exception of superheroes that just joined the Congress and
- 1:11:05Speaker 1: just make it so they're, they're just untouchable and immune
- 1:11:08Speaker 1: to all this, which I don't see happening. going to
- 1:11:11Speaker 1: be difficult.
- 1:11:12Speaker 41: Yeah, you know, I often talk about the system as
- 1:11:15Speaker 41: being designed in such a way that it is fundamentally
- 1:11:18Speaker 41: resistant to change. Like any system, like any collection of
- 1:11:22Speaker 41: living beings, there's an immune system, and part of that
- 1:11:24Speaker 41: immune system is the resistance to outsiders changing things. Now
- 1:11:30Speaker 41: think about, again, I talk about these processes, these historical
- 1:11:34Speaker 41: processes that unfold over time. The mainstreaming of lobbying as
- 1:11:39Speaker 41: we know it now only goes back to like the
- 1:11:41Speaker 41: 50s and 60s think about even in the past what
- 1:11:44Speaker 41: is it now 15 years we're all getting old I
- 1:11:46Speaker 41: can't keep track Citizens United being put in right where
- 1:11:49Speaker 41: corporations were allowed to have unlimited speech where those restrictions
- 1:11:53Speaker 41: were removed there are fairly predictable outcomes to that which
- 1:11:57Speaker 41: is why the people pushing them wanted to push them
- 1:12:00Speaker 41: but now we have those so how do you how
- 1:12:02Speaker 41: do you come back I'm.
- 1:12:03Speaker 1: Not sure I don't know how either but I gotta
- 1:12:05Speaker 1: thank both of you Hey, we're got Kevin Allen. Thank
- 1:12:09Speaker 1: you guys for joining me today. What great conversation. I'm

- 1:18:36Speaker 29: with the Steelers and the Browns on Thursday Night Football.
- 1:18:40Speaker 29: And don't look now, but your Cleveland Browns are 3-1
- 1:18:44Speaker 29: and are in first.
- 1:18:45Speaker 9: Place in their division. Yep, last night, Deshaun Watson, the quarterback.
- 1:18:50Speaker 29: That nobody wanted, led the Browns on a come-from-behind win
- 1:18:53Speaker 29: for their third game.
- 1:18:55Speaker 9: In a row.
- 1:18:55Speaker 24: And last night's win over the Steelers was even sweeter.
- 1:18:58Speaker 2: One, because it was a division rival.
- 1:19:00Speaker 24: Two, because they beat that baby Aaron Rodgers.
- 1:19:03Speaker 29: And three, it was only the second time a Browns
- 1:19:06Speaker 29: quarterback led them on a game-winning drive in the fourth quarter.
- 1:19:10Speaker 24: Since the 1970 merger.
- 1:19:12Speaker 29: I know we're only four weeks into this season, but

- 1:22:06Speaker 26: These boots are.
- 1:22:07Speaker 48: Made for walking.
- 1:22:09Speaker 9: And that's just what they'll do.
- 1:22:12Speaker 42: One of these days, these boots are going to walk
- 1:22:15Speaker 42: all over you.
- 1:22:18Speaker 7: United States Congressman turned political analyst.
- 1:22:21Speaker 16: It's time for John Laboutelier.
- 1:22:24Speaker 9: All right.
- 1:22:25Speaker 1: Steve Elzey here back with the great John Laboutelier. John,
- 1:22:29Speaker 1: welcome aboard.
- 1:22:31Speaker 39: Morning, Steve. Great to talk to you.
- 1:22:33Speaker 1: Great to talk to you.
- 1:22:34Speaker 10: How are you?
- 1:22:34Speaker 1: I am well, and I know you are well. As
- 1:22:36Speaker 1: the Yankees roll forward, we can start a little right there.
- 1:22:41Speaker 39: I want to tell you, all year, they can't. Every
- 1:22:46Speaker 39: game is.
- 1:22:47Speaker 4: 2-1, 3-2. Pathetic.
- 1:22:48Speaker 39: They get three hits. They're lucky to get a run.
- 1:22:51Speaker 39: It's been a pathetic offensive year. We come in here
- 1:22:55Speaker 39: against two very good pitchers, Peyton Tolley and Sonny Gray.
- 1:22:59Speaker 39: Sonny Gray, arguably... Could have been, could be the Cy
- 1:23:03Speaker 39: Young winner.
- 1:23:04Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:23:05Speaker 4: 18 wins.
- 1:23:05Speaker 39: Fantastic job this year. And we come in here and
- 1:23:09Speaker 39: we just annihilate those, those teams. Now we didn't annihilate
- 1:23:13Speaker 39: Peyton totally and Sonny Gray. We hit them and got
- 1:23:17Speaker 39: ahead of both of them. And then the Boston manager
- 1:23:20Speaker 39: pulled the plug way too quickly.
- 1:23:22Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:23:23Speaker 39: And off we go with that bullpen. But yeah, the
- 1:23:25Speaker 39: Yanks are great. They were great, but now we got to,
- 1:23:28Speaker 39: a tough opponent starting tomorrow night in Tampa.
- 1:23:32Speaker 1: We'll see how that goes. Well, you know, transitioning here
- 1:23:37Speaker 1: because there's a lot going on. You know, off air,
- 1:23:39Speaker 1: we talked a little bit about polls. We talked about
- 1:23:42Speaker 1: Jack Smith. We talked about Iran. We just, you know,
- 1:23:44Speaker 1: just kind of getting our juices flowing a little bit here.
- 1:23:48Speaker 1: Where are we with all this? Where are we? What's
- 1:23:52Speaker 1: going on?
- 1:23:52Speaker 39: Well, we're 32 days from the midterms, which are a
- 1:23:56Speaker 39: 100 percent referendum on Donald Trump. That's what it is.
- 1:24:00Speaker 39: It's nothing but an up or down vote on Trump.
- 1:24:06Speaker 39: And every poll everywhere, every indication that you get is
- 1:24:13Speaker 39: that a majority of people are voting thumbs down on
- 1:24:16Speaker 39: Trump and therefore on Republicans across the board. Yeah, some
- 1:24:22Speaker 39: Republicans will survive, obviously. I don't know that Susan Collins
- 1:24:27Speaker 39: is going to lose in Maine, for instance, because she's
- 1:24:29Speaker 39: got an independent name up there. But she's in a
- 1:24:32Speaker 39: tough race just because Trump's the head of the Republican Party,
- 1:24:37Speaker 39: and she has voted for most things with Trump. So
- 1:24:41Speaker 39: that's what it is. On every issue, the Iran war,
- 1:24:46Speaker 39: cost of gas, diesel, groceries, rent, Every single thing, tariffs,
- 1:24:52Speaker 39: everything he's done is being blamed for the lousy economy
- 1:24:57Speaker 39: that 75% of us are suffering through. 25% are making
- 1:25:02Speaker 39: money hand over fist and good for them. And I'm
- 1:25:07Speaker 39: not one that believes in bashing people who are doing well.
- 1:25:11Speaker 39: We all want to do well. But the problem is
- 1:25:14Speaker 39: it looks like the administration tilts towards those people. And
- 1:25:20Speaker 39: that's why Trump's in deep political trouble. That Associated Press
- 1:25:24Speaker 39: poll yesterday has got a 31 percent approval rating. That's
- 1:25:28Speaker 39: the lowest since either George W. Bush, when he was
- 1:25:35Speaker 39: leaving office in 2008 and 2009. I think he was
- 1:25:40Speaker 39: at 26 percent. And I think Nixon was at 26
- 1:25:44Speaker 39: percent the day he got on a helicopter and quit.
- 1:25:49Speaker 39: And Trump is getting in that territory.
- 1:25:52Speaker 1: You know, I don't know what, you know, what would
- 1:25:56Speaker 1: what would need to happen? You know, if you were,
- 1:25:59Speaker 1: you know, Trump's advisor, what what what what should he
- 1:26:03Speaker 1: do right now to get that back on track?
- 1:26:07Speaker 39: Well, I guess two ways for now. I mean, here's
- 1:26:10Speaker 39: the thing. They're voting already a little bit in some
- 1:26:13Speaker 39: states by mail. And early voting begins in another week
- 1:26:17Speaker 39: or two in many states. Three weeks from now, we
- 1:26:21Speaker 39: start here. We have 10 days of early voting in
- 1:26:23Speaker 39: New York. That's in-person early voting. But you can get
- 1:26:28Speaker 39: your mail-in ballot now in many states, including here in
- 1:26:31Speaker 39: New York. And so they're already voting. And the numbers
- 1:26:36Speaker 39: on who's requesting a ballot came out this week, and
- 1:26:41Speaker 39: it shows a huge Democratic uptick. from 2024 and 2022. Interesting.
- 1:26:47Speaker 39: So the enthusiasm is on the Democratic side to come
- 1:26:53Speaker 39: out and stick it to Trump. And on the other side,
- 1:26:57Speaker 39: the Republicans, the MAGA, all of them, they're dispirited, beaten down,
- 1:27:02Speaker 39: not particularly happy with anything. The economy affects them just
- 1:27:06Speaker 39: as much. And I think that's the two things. Increased
- 1:27:10Speaker 39: Democratic turnout, decreased Republican turnout, And independents are like 65-35
- 1:27:17Speaker 39: voting Democrat at this time.
- 1:27:20Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:27:21Speaker 1: You know, all right, let's hypothetical think here a little bit.
- 1:27:27Speaker 1: So let's say the blue wave comes through, and let's say,
- 1:27:31Speaker 1: you know, the House and the Senate go Democratic. You know,
- 1:27:37Speaker 1: there are thoughts of like a deep MAGA, a dark
- 1:27:41Speaker 1: MAGA type thing where they've already thought this through. where
- 1:27:44Speaker 1: at that point, you know, this administration may, you know, say, hey,
- 1:27:49Speaker 1: it was rigged, an outside force, you know, everything was wrong,
- 1:27:55Speaker 1: and then mire the states that are in blue in
- 1:28:01Speaker 1: litigation and then ultimately not seat them. You hear anything
- 1:28:05Speaker 1: about that?
- 1:28:06Speaker 39: Well, it's been talked about, sure. I've seen it for
- 1:28:09Speaker 39: a year. One of the possible plans of Trump First,
- 1:28:14Speaker 39: they try to intimidate people by putting ICE and OPS
- 1:28:18Speaker 39: and FBI at polling places. And by the way, he
- 1:28:23Speaker 39: tried to interfere through the courts to take over mail-in
- 1:28:28Speaker 39: voting by the federal government. The courts said, forget it.
- 1:28:32Speaker 39: That's not happening. All this other stuff about putting armed officers, which,
- 1:28:37Speaker 39: by the way, is against the law.
- 1:28:39Speaker 4: Yep.
- 1:28:40Speaker 39: Inside polling stations, that's never going to happen. More of
- 1:28:44Speaker 39: this stuff they do, first of all, tells us how
- 1:28:47Speaker 39: desperate they are and how they're losing. They wouldn't be
- 1:28:51Speaker 39: talking about doing that if they felt they were going
- 1:28:53Speaker 39: to do well on November 3rd. They know they're going
- 1:28:57Speaker 39: to get their ass handed to them. And so all that. Now,
- 1:29:00Speaker 39: the seating afterwards, tricky situation, because ultimately each legislative body
- 1:29:07Speaker 39: decides in the end whether someone gets seated or not.
- 1:29:12Speaker 39: If the Democrats have a big win, you know, not
- 1:29:16Speaker 39: by one vote, but I mean, if it's not, if
- 1:29:21Speaker 39: it's fairly clear in the popular vote, In many districts
- 1:29:27Speaker 39: and states, none of that post-election stuff is going to happen.
- 1:29:31Speaker 49: Right.
- 1:29:32Speaker 5: Right.
- 1:29:33Speaker 39: But, you know, I don't rule it out. Look, what's
- 1:29:36Speaker 39: going on since Trump got into this thing years ago?
- 1:29:39Speaker 39: The courts always find against him and the Republicans when
- 1:29:44Speaker 39: they try these shenanigans.
- 1:29:46Speaker 9: Right.
- 1:29:47Speaker 8: Right.
- 1:29:47Speaker 1: Well, not always, though, because if you look at the
- 1:29:50Speaker 1: Jack Smith hearings, right, the Supreme Court did side with
- 1:29:52Speaker 1: Donald Trump on that, right, on his immunity clause. What
- 1:29:54Speaker 1: did you think of the Jack Smith hearings, if you
- 1:29:56Speaker 1: saw them?
- 1:29:59Speaker 4: I did.
- 1:30:00Speaker 39: I watched the whole morning. It ended about 1 o'clock.
- 1:30:04Speaker 39: I thought Eric Schmidt revealed himself to be an idiot,
- 1:30:12Speaker 39: and he is an idiot, and he'll never live it down.
- 1:30:18Speaker 39: Because he's a stupid man. He could live it down.
- 1:30:22Speaker 39: If he came out right after and said, I really
- 1:30:24Speaker 39: blew it, and he made fun of himself and laughed
- 1:30:27Speaker 39: at himself, you can get away. You can overcome any mistake.
- 1:30:33Speaker 39: America's a forgiving place. But instead, he's doubled down. He
- 1:30:38Speaker 39: said he won the day. It proved what he wanted.
- 1:30:41Speaker 39: And now I heard this morning he's canceling all interviews
- 1:30:44Speaker 39: with the media. So he's clearly gotten a word that
- 1:30:48Speaker 39: it isn't working for him.
- 1:30:49Speaker 1: Because he was lying, or he didn't have his facts right,
- 1:30:52Speaker 1: any way you want to put it, right?
- 1:30:55Speaker 39: Well, I think it's outrageous. This is a guy that's
- 1:30:58Speaker 39: defending— I' m talking about Eric Schmidt. He's defending cop beaters on
- 1:31:05Speaker 39: January 6th. And he's attacking as a quote-unquote dirtbag. the
- 1:31:12Speaker 39: federal prosecutor who has served in both Republican and Democratic administrations,
- 1:31:18Speaker 39: who was asked to prosecute this case. You know, it's
- 1:31:22Speaker 39: beyond me, and hopefully it's the end of Eric Schmidt.
- 1:31:26Speaker 39: I think he's an embarrassment.
- 1:31:29Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. I had the same takeaways from that. To
- 1:31:35Speaker 1: say it's comical is just satire. It was just so poignant.
- 1:31:41Speaker 50: Poor.
- 1:31:41Speaker 1: It was just poor. I want better. Like, you know,
- 1:31:45Speaker 1: I want better.
- 1:31:45Speaker 39: Let's see if it reveals something else, because the hearing,
- 1:31:50Speaker 39: when the questioning began after the opening statements, the chairman,
- 1:31:56Speaker 39: Chuck Grassley, age 92, he, in his 10 minutes of questioning,
- 1:32:03Speaker 39: opens up this line of questioning of, have you ever
- 1:32:06Speaker 39: received counseling or advice or discussed any of this with
- 1:32:12Speaker 39: former CIA director John Brennan.
- 1:32:16Speaker 3: Okay.
- 1:32:17Speaker 39: Now, what the hell is that all about? Because right away,
- 1:32:19Speaker 39: Jack Spence said, I've never met John Brennan, never talked
- 1:32:22Speaker 39: to him. That was another conspiracy theory in the works
- 1:32:27Speaker 39: that someone had fed to Grassley, like someone fed this
- 1:32:31Speaker 39: Atlanta Hawks basketball thing and Bonnie Willis to Eric Schmidt.
- 1:32:37Speaker 39: And that's the problem with the modern-day Republican Party and
- 1:32:42Speaker 39: Fox News, Newsmax, and the Internet is that they live
- 1:32:47Speaker 39: in a world of manufactured, untrue conspiracy theories. And they
- 1:32:55Speaker 39: revel in these things. And so the more elaborate the conspiracy,
- 1:32:59Speaker 39: you put it to them, and they believe it and
- 1:33:01Speaker 39: go down these rabbit holes without any facts. And that's
- 1:33:06Speaker 39: why he was exposed as an idiot on Wednesday.
- 1:33:10Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:33:10Speaker 1: You know, I don't like I don't like these rabbit holes,
- 1:33:14Speaker 1: these idiots, these these people that push, you know, these
- 1:33:18Speaker 1: these unproven theories. But listen, to be fair.
- 1:33:20Speaker 4: Right.
- 1:33:20Speaker 1: It happens on both sides.
- 1:33:22Speaker 4: Right.
- 1:33:22Speaker 1: This isn't the first time this has happened. It just
- 1:33:25Speaker 1: seems with this administration, it it it leaps, you know,
- 1:33:29Speaker 1: above and beyond we've ever where we've ever been. Right.
- 1:33:34Speaker 39: I don't know that it happens on both sides. I
- 1:33:37Speaker 39: don't think there's a huge conspiracy machine on the Democratic side.
- 1:33:44Speaker 39: I'm a Republican. I'm not defending Democrats.
- 1:33:46Speaker 1: No, I know.
- 1:33:47Speaker 39: I've never seen anything like this until Trump and Fox
- 1:33:53Speaker 39: got married to each other.
- 1:33:54Speaker 27: Yes.
- 1:33:55Speaker 39: And Fox, where I worked for five years, they didn't
- 1:33:58Speaker 39: do conspiracies. They had legitimate news stories about legitimate reporters
- 1:34:04Speaker 39: on there running the place, too. And something happened after
- 1:34:09Speaker 39: Trump became president where Fox became part of the White
- 1:34:13Speaker 39: House press operation, and Sean Hannity became the White House
- 1:34:18Speaker 39: de facto press secretary. And we start calling out, you know,
- 1:34:22Speaker 39: Pizzagate and all this stuff. And by the way, the
- 1:34:27Speaker 39: biggest conspiracy of them all, which may very well be true,
- 1:34:31Speaker 39: is the Epstein stuff.
- 1:34:33Speaker 49: Yes, yes.
- 1:34:34Speaker 39: Because that came from the right, yet it's about right-wing people,
- 1:34:39Speaker 39: and it's about the biggest abuser in the Epstein story,
- 1:34:42Speaker 39: who's in the files more than anybody else, is, oh,
- 1:34:46Speaker 39: Donald Trump.
- 1:34:47Speaker 1: I know, I know. I know, I know. So, you know,
- 1:34:52Speaker 1: why then? So we're at Donald Trump's second term, and
- 1:34:56Speaker 1: we're about two years in, or almost. And, you know,
- 1:35:00Speaker 1: about to become arguably a lame duck, right? So why
- 1:35:05Speaker 1: are they still, you know, kind of falling on their sword, right?
- 1:35:10Speaker 1: And losing credibility and their job and their career over
- 1:35:14Speaker 1: this guy?
- 1:35:17Speaker 39: Because Trump still is enormously popular among the Republican base.
- 1:35:22Speaker 9: Okay.
- 1:35:23Speaker 39: So whatever Republicans there are, he gets... He was up
- 1:35:29Speaker 39: at 92 percent in these latest polls. He's lower. He's
- 1:35:33Speaker 39: at 80, 73 percent, somewhere in there. But that's still
- 1:35:37Speaker 39: a lot of people inside the Republican Party who are
- 1:35:41Speaker 39: totally devoted to Trump. And if you're a congressman or
- 1:35:44Speaker 39: a senator, you're under you have come to realize that
- 1:35:50Speaker 39: your voters that voted for you to elect you in
- 1:35:54Speaker 39: your state or your district. They actually are more loyal
- 1:35:57Speaker 39: to Trump than they are to you.
- 1:35:59Speaker 25: Yeah.
- 1:36:00Speaker 39: So you don't want to cross Trump. You don't want
- 1:36:02Speaker 39: Trump coming after you like he does. And they're afraid
- 1:36:08Speaker 39: of him. And businesses are afraid of him because he
- 1:36:11Speaker 39: can drive the stock price down of a company with
- 1:36:15Speaker 39: one tweet, which is now a true social posting.
- 1:36:18Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:36:19Speaker 39: That's why they've all sucked up to him, said, I
- 1:36:22Speaker 39: don't want to take him on. I'll pay them off instead.
- 1:36:25Speaker 39: And they blowed the money into corrupt Donald Trump.
- 1:36:29Speaker 20: Amazing.
- 1:36:30Speaker 1: Absolutely amazing. And you hear the rumbling still of a
- 1:36:37Speaker 1: Trump third term, right? You hear these rumblings. Forget it.
- 1:36:43Speaker 1: Nothing's happening, right? A.
- 1:36:45Speaker 39: It's illegal. B, nobody wants it. C, he even is
- 1:36:51Speaker 39: talking about who's going to be the nominee in 2028?
- 1:36:56Speaker 39: Is it going to be Vance? Is it going to
- 1:36:57Speaker 39: be Rubio?
- 1:36:58Speaker 17: Right.
- 1:36:58Speaker 39: It's his acknowledgement. It's not going to be him.
- 1:37:01Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:37:01Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:37:01Speaker 39: So there are no rumblings to get.
- 1:37:04Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:37:05Speaker 39: He would get beaten anyway.
- 1:37:07Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:37:08Speaker 1: No, I get you. John LeBoulier on with us, you know,
- 1:37:13Speaker 1: you know, really, really hitting hard on what's happening. And, and,
- 1:37:19Speaker 1: you know, it's, it's just, I just look at it all. And,
- 1:37:23Speaker 1: you know, it's like, you know, part of me just
- 1:37:25Speaker 1: like I want it. I want to burn it down
- 1:37:27Speaker 1: and start again, but I don't know how. Like, how
- 1:37:29Speaker 1: do you get out of the corruption loop that we're
- 1:37:31Speaker 1: in right now? I mean, the permissions of what this
- 1:37:34Speaker 1: administration has allowed to now happen in real time where
- 1:37:40Speaker 1: we're getting all these all this stuff that is insane,
- 1:37:45Speaker 1: as you were just talking about. How do we stop
- 1:37:47Speaker 1: it and go backwards and get it to where it was?
- 1:37:49Speaker 1: Can it even be stopped?
- 1:37:51Speaker 39: The people speak. That's how the country runs. The people
- 1:37:55Speaker 39: are going to speak in the midterm election. The two
- 1:37:59Speaker 39: biggest issues, the polling shows it, we'll see for sure
- 1:38:03Speaker 39: when real votes are cast, but are cost and corruption.
- 1:38:09Speaker 39: The people aren't dumb. They see all the stuff going on.
- 1:38:13Speaker 39: They're getting poorer while Trump and his family are getting richer,
- 1:38:17Speaker 39: and they don't like it. And they probably wouldn't be
- 1:38:22Speaker 39: upset as much if they, too, were doing well financially.
- 1:38:28Speaker 39: They'd tolerate it.
- 1:38:30Speaker 4: It.
- 1:38:30Speaker 39: At least the thing's working. I got more money in
- 1:38:32Speaker 39: my pocket, so I can't really worry about what Trump's doing.
- 1:38:36Speaker 39: But when I don't have more money in my pocket,
- 1:38:39Speaker 39: And I see him rolling around in gold all over
- 1:38:42Speaker 39: the place.
- 1:38:43Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 1:38:43Speaker 39: And his kid doing great and his son having his wedding.
- 1:38:47Speaker 1: I think his family is making the most money of
- 1:38:49Speaker 1: any political family ever.
- 1:38:53Speaker 39: By the way, no political family ever made any money
- 1:38:55Speaker 39: while they're in the White House. It never happened. No president.
- 1:38:59Speaker 39: My God, this guy has done more stock trades in
- 1:39:03Speaker 39: the last year and a half. More stock trades. First
- 1:39:09Speaker 39: of all, no president ever made any stock trades until
- 1:39:12Speaker 39: Trump came along, because they all put their money in
- 1:39:15Speaker 39: a blind trust and don't pay any attention because they're
- 1:39:18Speaker 39: too busy doing the job. Trump, who has told people,
- 1:39:22Speaker 39: I want to make money on the deal, he has
- 1:39:25Speaker 39: made more stock trades in a year and a half
- 1:39:27Speaker 39: than all 535 members of Congress combined. I mean, it's
- 1:39:32Speaker 39: just— And the answer is none of them should be
- 1:39:36Speaker 39: making stock trades while they're in elected office.
- 1:39:39Speaker 50: None of them.
- 1:39:40Speaker 23: I know.
- 1:39:41Speaker 39: It should all be banned by everybody out. You're going
- 1:39:44Speaker 39: to stop it. You ask, you know, what can be done.
- 1:39:47Speaker 39: The people are going to speak. And then whoever wins
- 1:39:51Speaker 39: this election, if we're right, that is on costs and corruption.
- 1:39:56Speaker 39: They've got to get to work legislatively and put in
- 1:40:00Speaker 39: new laws to prevent as much of this as can
- 1:40:02Speaker 39: be prevented.
- 1:40:03Speaker 1: Absolutely.
- 1:40:04Speaker 39: They have to do it.
- 1:40:05Speaker 1: Absolutely. John, thank you again for joining me today. Great, Steve.
- 1:40:10Speaker 1: It really is a pleasure to chat with you. I

- 1:52:49Speaker 23: that killed 14-year-old Carson Wilson of Groton. 19-year-old Cass Sherman
- 1:52:53Speaker 23: pleaded no contest to manslaughter, assault, and underage DUI charges
- 1:52:59Speaker 23: stemming from from the Fishtown Road crash. CCRI and the
- 1:53:03Speaker 23: University of Rhode Island have launched a fully online RN
- 1:53:07Speaker 23: to Bachelor of Science program for working nurses. The partnership
- 1:53:11Speaker 23: gives CCRI nursing graduates a flexible path to earn a
- 1:53:15Speaker 23: bachelor's degree while helping strengthen Rhode Island's healthcare workforce. I'm
- 1:53:21Speaker 23: Sean Murphy. When news breaks, we break in.
- 1:53:24Speaker 48: Today's show is brought to you by new 7-Up Zero Sugar.
- 1:53:28Speaker 9: Now with more sugar than ever.
- 1:53:30Speaker 42: Oh, no wonder why I look so fat.
- 1:53:34Speaker 1: The seat of honor. Brought to you by Densmore Oil
- 1:53:38Speaker 1: and Bugbee Plumbing. All right, we are back on, and
- 1:53:42Speaker 1: I have an amazing guest and a good friend, Barbara Neff,
- 1:53:46Speaker 1: downtown New London. Barbara, how are you? We just had
- 1:53:50Speaker 1: a spirited conversation. I wasn't thinking politics with Barb, but
- 1:53:55Speaker 1: we had a spirited conversation here about politics, and she
- 1:53:58Speaker 1: had a great question, and the question was, how is
- 1:54:01Speaker 1: it that in Waterford, and she's in Waterford, my brother,
- 1:54:05Speaker 1: and like, You have some people that are just, you know,
- 1:54:07Speaker 1: that lean right and some lean left. Where do they
- 1:54:10Speaker 1: get that impetus to do that, to see it? And
- 1:54:14Speaker 1: as I'm thinking this through and talking to you, I said,
- 1:54:17Speaker 1: you know, I grew up watching MTV and Feed the
- 1:54:20Speaker 1: World and Live Aid and Farm Aid. And I'm a musician.
- 1:54:24Speaker 1: I want to do it. But I don't think it
- 1:54:26Speaker 1: was a thing that saw me. I think people have
- 1:54:28Speaker 1: a compass inside that just ticks in their own direction.
- 1:54:32Speaker 1: And some things kind of bring it out. but I
- 1:54:36Speaker 1: don't think a specific thing makes you this. I think
- 1:54:39Speaker 1: you are, and those things kind of heighten those senses.
- 1:54:42Speaker 1: It's just my opinion.
- 1:54:44Speaker 42: Yeah, I like to say it's experiences. So what is
- 1:54:46Speaker 42: my experience and what did I experience that's different than
- 1:54:50Speaker 42: you that my ideas go one way or the other?
- 1:54:54Speaker 42: And I like to talk to people that are different
- 1:54:56Speaker 42: than myself and get what their experiences were so I
- 1:55:00Speaker 42: can understand them better. And I do that with a
- 1:55:05Speaker 42: lot of things. There's different kinds of conversations that are
- 1:55:08Speaker 42: out there, and I'm like, Somebody else has had a
- 1:55:11Speaker 42: different experience in their life. And I'm like, hey, tell
- 1:55:14Speaker 42: me why you believe in that.
- 1:55:16Speaker 20: Right.
- 1:55:17Speaker 42: And like what happened in your life that maybe you
- 1:55:20Speaker 42: saw something.
- 1:55:21Speaker 1: Your parents were business owners, right?
- 1:55:22Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 1:55:23Speaker 1: Typical business owners. They want the lower tax. They want
- 1:55:26Speaker 1: the business breaks. They want so that, you know, that
- 1:55:28Speaker 1: right there. not all business folks are Republican. I get it.
- 1:55:32Speaker 1: But I mean, that's a typical thing, you know, and
- 1:55:34Speaker 1: that fed down to you, right? There was a little
- 1:55:37Speaker 1: bit of your, and you, of course, are a very
- 1:55:38Speaker 1: successful business owner in London. We'll get to some of
- 1:55:40Speaker 1: the things that you got coming up. But that's part
- 1:55:44Speaker 1: of it, right? Now, listen, my dad was a business owner, too.
- 1:55:47Speaker 1: It didn't particularly work that way for me. I'm just
- 1:55:49Speaker 1: saying that maybe.
- 1:55:51Speaker 42: I just think it's funny how two brothers that are
- 1:55:53Speaker 42: so close are so different. That's why, and I'm like,
- 1:55:56Speaker 42: you know, that was what stemmed the conversation.
- 1:55:59Speaker 1: You know, Yeah, and I would say, and it's great
- 1:56:02Speaker 1: right now because he can't say, so I'm just going
- 1:56:04Speaker 1: to say. So I put myself in a very good
- 1:56:09Speaker 1: position at the moment. But no, I would say that
- 1:56:13Speaker 1: there are some definite things that we are different on,
- 1:56:16Speaker 1: but then there are some definite things that we are
- 1:56:18Speaker 1: very much the same on. If I were to talk
- 1:56:23Speaker 1: to Lee about animals... And saving and not hurting animals
- 1:56:29Speaker 1: and having animal protection rights, which is a very democratic thing, right?
- 1:56:33Speaker 24: Right.
- 1:56:34Speaker 1: He would be on my team.
- 1:56:35Speaker 42: I'm on your team, man.
- 1:56:36Speaker 1: I know, but remember now, so you've got to go
- 1:56:40Speaker 1: higher than that, right? So if you're going to want
- 1:56:42Speaker 1: to protect animals, what's hurting the animals? That means the business,
- 1:56:45Speaker 1: the oil, the factories, right? So then you've got to
- 1:56:48Speaker 1: look at them, and how are you going to do that?
- 1:56:51Speaker 1: So that's where it stops with a lot of folks, right?
- 1:56:54Speaker 1: So they'll say they want animals. They say they want
- 1:56:56Speaker 1: to protect everything like that, but then when it gets to,
- 1:56:59Speaker 1: you know what, let's let the CO2 happen. Let's light
- 1:57:03Speaker 1: up the world. Let's make... environmental regions disappear and kill
- 1:57:08Speaker 1: animals because of the all-important dollar. So here's the thing.
- 1:57:14Speaker 1: If you're going to walk the walk, if you're going
- 1:57:18Speaker 1: to actually be an advocate for something, then it just
- 1:57:21Speaker 1: doesn't start at one level. It actually trickles up. And
- 1:57:25Speaker 1: so what is killing? If you're going to love animals
- 1:57:27Speaker 1: and you hate that they're being killed and their environments
- 1:57:29Speaker 1: are being destroyed, we've got to ask why. And you've
- 1:57:32Speaker 1: got to address that issue. And if you're not willing
- 1:57:35Speaker 1: to address that issue, which is a democratic thing, then
- 1:57:38Speaker 1: you go the other way. And that's fine. And there's
- 1:57:39Speaker 1: nothing wrong with that. I'm just saying that's where the
- 1:57:42Speaker 1: metal hits the road right there, right? That's where you've
- 1:57:45Speaker 1: got to go, right? And so that's... And this is where, like,
- 1:57:51Speaker 1: you can say to me, I'm on your team, right?
- 1:57:53Speaker 1: But then when they go up and up and up,
- 1:57:55Speaker 1: you're not so much on my team, right?
- 1:57:58Speaker 42: You know, it's really... I think Lee can have this
- 1:58:03Speaker 42: fight better with you than I can. I'm here to
- 1:58:05Speaker 42: talk about events, man.
- 1:58:09Speaker 4: Well.
- 1:58:10Speaker 49: with that, let's get to those events.
- 1:58:13Speaker 1: Because, Barb, you know, you have been doing events in
- 1:58:19Speaker 1: New London for quite some time. And this is like
- 1:58:25Speaker 1: hot off the press.
- 1:58:33Speaker 54: We also don't want to see people suffer or watch
- 1:58:35Speaker 54: homeless folks struggle or people go hungry, but the difference
- 1:58:38Speaker 54: is that Republicans want to help people help themselves and
- 1:58:41Speaker 54: Democrats want to simply use other people's resources to help
- 1:58:44Speaker 54: less fortunate. Yes, Lee likes animals and the environment, but
- 1:58:48Speaker 54: weight windmills and turbines kill birds of prey and whales.
- 1:58:52Speaker 54: Solar farms lay waste to open space. So what the
- 1:58:56Speaker 54: left is doing is flawed.
- 1:58:58Speaker 1: Okay, so I'm just going to say one thing about
- 1:59:00Speaker 1: that flawed philosophy. Let's just say the windmill kills birds.
- 1:59:06Speaker 23: All right.
- 1:59:06Speaker 1: So the smokestacks that float across all of America, like,
- 1:59:10Speaker 1: you know, it doesn't kill birds. I mean, come on.
- 1:59:13Speaker 1: You can't have your cake and eat it too, right?
- 1:59:15Speaker 9: Once again.
- 1:59:16Speaker 1: You can't have your cake and eat it too. If
- 1:59:18Speaker 1: you're going to say windmill kills birds and not smokestacks
- 1:59:21Speaker 1: and CO2 doesn't kill animals... Then you got a problem.
- 1:59:26Speaker 1: So anyway, let's go back and out of the AI
- 1:59:29Speaker 1: and let's talk about what's amazing happening in New London and, Barb,
- 1:59:35Speaker 1: all kinds of events. Let's bring it back home. And, Barb,
- 1:59:38Speaker 1: what's happening? Seriously.
- 1:59:40Speaker 42: So we start off next Wednesday, which is going to
- 1:59:44Speaker 42: be a beautiful day. Um, with the food stroll. And
- 1:59:47Speaker 42: so new London's bringing back the food stroll and we
- 1:59:49Speaker 42: have tickets available online at downtown new London.
- 1:59:54Speaker 1: So people know what is the food stroll?
- 1:59:55Speaker 42: So the food stroll is you buy a ticket and
- 1:59:58Speaker 42: you go to over 20 different restaurants and get samples
- 2:00:02Speaker 42: of food.
- 2:00:03Speaker 3: Oh yeah.
- 2:00:04Speaker 42: And so you walk about three miles.
- 2:00:06Speaker 1: You walk off the food that you eat. You do.
- 2:00:09Speaker 42: And there's everything from Ecuadorian food to Indian food to
- 2:00:13Speaker 42: popcorn to you have a beer. And so once you
- 2:00:17Speaker 42: buy the ticket, it's all free. And there's a little
- 2:00:20Speaker 42: map downtown, and I just looked at the weather, and
- 2:00:23Speaker 42: it's going to be beautiful. And so it'll be a
- 2:00:25Speaker 42: great night to spend in downtown London.
- 2:00:27Speaker 1: I have been on this multiple times in the years,
- 2:00:30Speaker 1: and it is so fun. I mean, the vibe in
- 2:00:32Speaker 1: downtown London with everybody walking the streets is awesome. And
- 2:00:36Speaker 1: all the vendors outside sort of handing you all kinds
- 2:00:40Speaker 1: of food. And there's also entertainment, right?
- 2:00:44Speaker 42: Yes, I have. Thor is going to be playing music downtown. Yeah,
- 2:00:48Speaker 42: he's going to be. And I have some witches that
- 2:00:51Speaker 42: will be doing a flash mob downtown.
- 2:00:53Speaker 27: Yeah.
- 2:00:53Speaker 42: So we have stuff going on.
- 2:00:54Speaker 1: I love that. Yeah. So there's all kinds of things.
- 2:00:57Speaker 1: And it really it almost resembles a festival. It's fun.
- 2:01:02Speaker 9: It is.
- 2:01:03Speaker 4: It is.
- 2:01:03Speaker 42: And, you know, it's great when the weather's great. You know,
- 2:01:05Speaker 42: you walk around downtown, you see everybody down there that,
- 2:01:08Speaker 42: you know, usually the mayor and the counselors will walk
- 2:01:11Speaker 42: around down down there and during the stroll.
- 2:01:15Speaker 1: So, you know, no, it's great. And it's it's it's
- 2:01:19Speaker 1: a big hit for New London. So if you had.
- 2:01:21Speaker 1: So where does one get tickets for this?
- 2:01:23Speaker 42: So you can go to the DowntownNewLondonAssociation.com and purchase a
- 2:01:28Speaker 42: ticket online. And then you get bracelets, and you come
- 2:01:31Speaker 42: to my office and pick up the bracelet, and you stroll.
- 2:01:33Speaker 24: All right.
- 2:01:34Speaker 1: So if you can't go online, is there a way
- 2:01:37Speaker 1: you can do it just by walking there?
- 2:01:39Speaker 10: Yes.
- 2:01:39Speaker 1: Is there some way to do it?
- 2:01:40Speaker 4: Yep.
- 2:01:41Speaker 42: The day of the event, which is Wednesday at 4.30,
- 2:01:44Speaker 42: you can purchase tickets.
- 2:01:45Speaker 1: Okay.
- 2:01:45Speaker 42: You can come to the office and purchase tickets that way.
- 2:01:47Speaker 1: So any way, shape, or form, you get down there,
- 2:01:49Speaker 1: you can get a ticket, and you can be part
- 2:01:50Speaker 1: of this.
- 2:01:51Speaker 33: Yes.
- 2:01:51Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 2:01:52Speaker 1: And I know a lot of the restaurants already, and
- 2:01:54Speaker 1: we've been, you know, since I work in New London, I've...
- 2:01:58Speaker 1: I chat with them about it, and they're pretty excited
- 2:02:00Speaker 1: about it. Even the restaurant, like, you know, it's a
- 2:02:03Speaker 1: good vibe. It really is.
- 2:02:04Speaker 42: Yeah, I was just talking to Harbor Cantina, which is downtown,
- 2:02:07Speaker 42: and they're an Ecuadorian restaurant, and they're doing ceviche two
- 2:02:11Speaker 42: different ways. So you get to try that, which is great.
- 2:02:14Speaker 42: We have the hygienic that's doing oxtail mac and cheese. So,
- 2:02:19Speaker 42: you know, you'll have different things. The social is.
- 2:02:22Speaker 1: Come hungry, right? Right.
- 2:02:24Speaker 42: The social is doing... Cheddar Gouda mac and cheese with
- 2:02:28Speaker 42: a short rib on top.
- 2:02:29Speaker 1: You had me at the Gouda. You had me at
- 2:02:34Speaker 1: the Gouda. All right, so you have this next Wednesday,
- 2:02:36Speaker 1: the food stroll. So what else is happening in your world?
- 2:02:39Speaker 42: Well, I have this company called Uncovering New London, and
- 2:02:44Speaker 42: we are doing historic haunted tours for the month of October.
- 2:02:49Speaker 42: Love it! And I got this new person, Dosen, that's
- 2:02:55Speaker 42: going to lead it. And we're training him right now.
- 2:02:57Speaker 1: Do I know him?
- 2:02:58Speaker 42: You do know him.
- 2:03:00Speaker 1: Might it be me? Yes, it's you. It's my introduction
- 2:03:08Speaker 1: to acting. I'm an actor.
- 2:03:09Speaker 4: Okay.
- 2:03:10Speaker 1: I'm an actor.
- 2:03:10Speaker 5: All right.
- 2:03:11Speaker 1: And I'm going to give him a... I actually... A
- 2:03:13Speaker 1: fun story for everyone. So I met Barb down... you know,
- 2:03:18Speaker 1: down in new London waterfront and to go, what I
- 2:03:21Speaker 1: thought was just going to go over what it is that,
- 2:03:24Speaker 1: you know, the roots and just sort of talk about
- 2:03:26Speaker 1: it and everything. And she sits down and she says,
- 2:03:30Speaker 1: all right, I'm going to time you. And I went,
- 2:03:34Speaker 1: and I went, wait, uh, time me. Oh, you want
- 2:03:37Speaker 1: me to do the tour now? Like right now? And
- 2:03:41Speaker 1: she's like, yeah.
- 2:03:41Speaker 49: And she sits down and crosses her legs and she
- 2:03:43Speaker 49: goes with the watch. I'm like, all right, let's go.
- 2:03:48Speaker 49: Talk about jumping into the fire. But no, we had
- 2:03:50Speaker 49: a good time and we learned a lot. And I
- 2:03:52Speaker 49: learned a lot, actually. And Barbara really has this stuff.
- 2:03:57Speaker 49: It's a machine.
- 2:03:58Speaker 1: I was on her. What was it? The Revolutionary Tour?
- 2:04:01Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 2:04:01Speaker 1: OK. Which I thought was fantastic with Benedict Arnold and
- 2:04:05Speaker 1: this one. The scripts that I have here are just awesome.
- 2:04:08Speaker 1: New London is just rich with all kinds of history
- 2:04:12Speaker 1: and hauntings and just things.
- 2:04:14Speaker 27: Right.
- 2:04:15Speaker 9: It is.
- 2:04:16Speaker 42: And it's really fun. I don't give the tours. I
- 2:04:18Speaker 42: just promote the tours and sell the tickets and do
- 2:04:21Speaker 42: that kind of thing. But October, let's see, we're doing
- 2:04:25Speaker 42: the haunted tours on Friday night. So the next one
- 2:04:28Speaker 42: is October 9th.
- 2:04:30Speaker 1: And how do they get tickets for these tours?
- 2:04:32Speaker 42: UncoveringNewLondon.com. You go online and there is a schedule there
- 2:04:35Speaker 42: and you buy a ticket and it's $ 25 and you
- 2:04:38Speaker 42: go on a 90-minute walk in downtown New London and
- 2:04:41Speaker 42: we show you all the beautiful buildings downtown and give
- 2:04:43Speaker 42: you a little bit of history and maybe tell you
- 2:04:45Speaker 42: some haunted stories.
- 2:04:47Speaker 1: So it's definitely a walk. So make sure that you
- 2:04:49Speaker 1: realize that it's, you know, it's a little bit of
- 2:04:51Speaker 1: a walk.
- 2:04:52Speaker 42: It's three quarters of a mile.
- 2:04:53Speaker 24: There you go.
- 2:04:54Speaker 42: See, I have all that. I got it all.
- 2:04:56Speaker 1: She's got all of that.
- 2:04:59Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 2:05:00Speaker 7: No.
- 2:05:00Speaker 1: And then so after the after this Halloween haunting season,
- 2:05:04Speaker 1: is there another one in the works already?
- 2:05:06Speaker 42: So we also have some we still have some American
- 2:05:09Speaker 42: Revolutionary and some Gilded Age tours that happens on Saturdays
- 2:05:12Speaker 42: and Sundays. And those are at 10 o'clock in the morning.
- 2:05:15Speaker 42: So we run to the end of October.
- 2:05:16Speaker 1: Awesome.
- 2:05:17Speaker 42: And then I go into Christmas because I love Christmas.
- 2:05:20Speaker 1: Yeah, I know. We talked a little bit about it yesterday.
- 2:05:21Speaker 42: I love Christmas. So I have, if you have a
- 2:05:25Speaker 42: Jeep out there, we do a lighted Jeep parade the
- 2:05:28Speaker 42: Friday after Thanksgiving.
- 2:05:30Speaker 5: Cool.
- 2:05:30Speaker 42: We start at Shaw's Cove, and we bring Santa in,
- 2:05:33Speaker 42: and we light the Christmas tree, and we have Christmas carols,
- 2:05:36Speaker 42: and we have Santa, and we decorate downtown. So I'm
- 2:05:40Speaker 42: working on that for this year.
- 2:05:41Speaker 1: Downtown New London gets decorated, right? And it looks great.
- 2:05:45Speaker 1: I mean, like, it just has this feeling, like, with
- 2:05:50Speaker 1: all the lights come up and the wreaths and the vibe.
- 2:05:54Speaker 1: I don't know. It really looks great. I think you
- 2:05:56Speaker 1: did a good job.
- 2:05:57Speaker 42: When we have the old buildings and things like that,
- 2:05:59Speaker 42: it gives you, like, this nostalgic feeling down there when
- 2:06:02Speaker 42: you walk down there.
- 2:06:03Speaker 27: Yep.
- 2:06:03Speaker 42: Christmas.
- 2:06:04Speaker 4: Yep.
- 2:06:06Speaker 1: No, it's great. So that tour is great. I'm happy
- 2:06:10Speaker 1: to be trying my hand at it. And it was
- 2:06:13Speaker 1: a very funny day yesterday on how that all worked.
- 2:06:17Speaker 1: And now I know better. I know I had some
- 2:06:23Speaker 1: work to do. But no, so that's good. So that's
- 2:06:27Speaker 1: going to play in.
- 2:06:30Speaker 1: Heavily with the new Coast Guard Museum, right?
- 2:06:32Speaker 9: It is.
- 2:06:32Speaker 42: Actually, we're working on a tour right now, doing some
- 2:06:35Speaker 42: research about doing an actual Coast Guard tour, talking about
- 2:06:39Speaker 42: people that were in the Coast Guard. And as you
- 2:06:41Speaker 42: might or might not know, the owner of the roadhouse,
- 2:06:44Speaker 42: Tom Crosby, his dad was in the Coast Guard. And
- 2:06:46Speaker 42: when you walked into the roadhouse... It had a lot
- 2:06:48Speaker 42: of memorabilia. So we're going to start. We're going to
- 2:06:52Speaker 42: talk about him and we're going to talk about some
- 2:06:54Speaker 42: other people that were in the Coast Guard. And we're
- 2:06:55Speaker 42: actually doing a Coast Guard tour. So maybe you go
- 2:06:58Speaker 42: into the Coast Guard Museum, but then you want to
- 2:07:00Speaker 42: learn some more about the people. We do American Revolutionary,
- 2:07:04Speaker 42: Gilded Age, Black History because it's Black History Trail downtown.
- 2:07:08Speaker 24: Yeah, there is.
- 2:07:09Speaker 42: They just put up two new markers down there.
- 2:07:11Speaker 1: Oh, I didn't see them.
- 2:07:12Speaker 42: Yep.
- 2:07:13Speaker 26: Take a look.
- 2:07:13Speaker 1: Yep. Yep.
- 2:07:15Speaker 42: Barclay Hendricks was one. And then there was another one
- 2:07:18Speaker 42: put on the waterfront. It had to do with the Pequots.
- 2:07:22Speaker 24: Oh, the Pequots.
- 2:07:22Speaker 1: That's right. There's so much in New London history of
- 2:07:28Speaker 1: things to talk about and just stories.
- 2:07:31Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 2:07:33Speaker 1: You know, you've got your hands full. I mean, you
- 2:07:35Speaker 1: can create. You can just, I mean, endless. It's, you know, almost.
- 2:07:38Speaker 42: So somebody called me the other day and was telling
- 2:07:40Speaker 42: me about this woman who was an Irish woman in
- 2:07:42Speaker 42: New London. And so they said, you should do a
- 2:07:44Speaker 42: tour about her. And we started researching her. And my
- 2:07:46Speaker 42: historian and myself, like, we had never heard this story.
- 2:07:49Speaker 42: So maybe for St. Patrick's Day, we're going to do
- 2:07:51Speaker 42: a story about this woman. Fire departments are also pretty
- 2:07:55Speaker 42: good in New London. There were tons of fire departments
- 2:07:59Speaker 42: in New London.
- 2:08:01Speaker 1: I have friends whose relatives were in the fire department.
- 2:08:06Speaker 1: you know, in New London that go back and back.
- 2:08:08Speaker 1: And there is a big history of fire departments there.
- 2:08:10Speaker 1: That might be something to think about too, you know.
- 2:08:12Speaker 42: Well, we're also doing bus tours. So if you have
- 2:08:14Speaker 42: more than six people and you don't want to do
- 2:08:16Speaker 42: the walk, we can put you on a bus and
- 2:08:18Speaker 42: we can actually do all of New London. So we've
- 2:08:21Speaker 42: done that too. We've had groups that have come down
- 2:08:23Speaker 42: and want to do a Gilded Age tour where we
- 2:08:25Speaker 42: go to Harkness and we go, to the south end
- 2:08:28Speaker 42: of New London and do that. We've done that quite
- 2:08:30Speaker 42: a few times.
- 2:08:32Speaker 1: Recently, of course, you did the Maritime Festival.
- 2:08:35Speaker 42: Yes, that you participated in.
- 2:08:37Speaker 1: I just wanted to circle back there. That was an
- 2:08:40Speaker 1: amazing festival. Everything was just... The day, for starters, was great.
- 2:08:47Speaker 1: It was beautiful. But all the entertainment, all the vendors,
- 2:08:51Speaker 1: the vibe, the boats, the ships, the drone show... you know,
- 2:08:57Speaker 1: if you're up to me, did you see the drone show? Yeah.
- 2:08:59Speaker 1: If it was up to me, I would get rid
- 2:09:00Speaker 1: of fireworks and just have drone show.
- 2:09:02Speaker 5: I know.
- 2:09:03Speaker 42: I know it was cool.
- 2:09:04Speaker 1: It was really, I mean, it's like, it's, it's, it's
- 2:09:08Speaker 1: unique and it can be personalized. I think.
- 2:09:11Speaker 10: Yes.
- 2:09:11Speaker 42: Yes, it can be.
- 2:09:12Speaker 25: Yeah.
- 2:09:12Speaker 20: Yeah.
- 2:09:12Speaker 1: And so, uh, especially from new London, all this stuff
- 2:09:15Speaker 1: that we're talking about, um, you know, could all be
- 2:09:18Speaker 1: brought up, brought to life, like right over the Thames river. Uh,
- 2:09:22Speaker 1: you know, I, I, I find it amazing and limitless, uh,
- 2:09:25Speaker 1: And that was only, what, 350 drones?
- 2:09:27Speaker 49: No.
- 2:09:28Speaker 24: Yeah, it was.
- 2:09:28Speaker 3: It started off.
- 2:09:29Speaker 42: Yeah, it was like 300... It was 300 drones, and
- 2:09:32Speaker 42: then we got a sponsor, so we ended up adding
- 2:09:34Speaker 42: some to.
- 2:09:35Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:09:35Speaker 33: Yeah.
- 2:09:36Speaker 42: So it was about 400 drones when we were done.
- 2:09:38Speaker 1: I mean, it's just.
- 2:09:40Speaker 1: Where I, you know, I didn't have, was it set
- 2:09:43Speaker 1: to music? Because that I don't know.
- 2:09:45Speaker 10: So.
- 2:09:46Speaker 1: Because that would be awesome. And I just happen to
- 2:09:48Speaker 1: know a musician who might be able to set that
- 2:09:51Speaker 1: stuff to music for you.
- 2:09:52Speaker 42: So what we did is we actually played patriotic music
- 2:09:57Speaker 42: at our main stage.
- 2:09:58Speaker 49: Yeah.
- 2:09:58Speaker 42: During the show.
- 2:09:59Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:10:00Speaker 42: You could put music to it. It's like a firework show.
- 2:10:02Speaker 9: Yeah, that's what I'm saying.
- 2:10:03Speaker 42: You can put music to it. We were, there was
- 2:10:07Speaker 42: a lot of creative changes at the end, and so
- 2:10:10Speaker 42: we couldn't put music to it. And that's like a,
- 2:10:12Speaker 42: you guys. It took 14 hours to download that show.
- 2:10:16Speaker 1: Oh my God, 14 hours.
- 2:10:17Speaker 42: Once you created it. I mean, it was.
- 2:10:19Speaker 1: The servers were going nuts.
- 2:10:21Speaker 42: It was, that show was a, the show we did
- 2:10:24Speaker 42: last year was a 14 minute show, which is really like,
- 2:10:27Speaker 42: For people, you know, that's a good long show for
- 2:10:30Speaker 42: people to sit there and pay attention to something.
- 2:10:32Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:10:32Speaker 42: But this one was a 19-minute and 10-second show.
- 2:10:36Speaker 1: 20 minutes seems about right for that sort of thing.
- 2:10:39Speaker 1: You can get that to work.
- 2:10:40Speaker 42: That's long, though. But people are going to come.
- 2:10:43Speaker 1: From all over and sit for hours like a fireworks show.
- 2:10:47Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:10:47Speaker 1: You've got to give them.
- 2:10:48Speaker 42: So fireworks, once again, so when you do.
- 2:10:50Speaker 1: Can you have both?
- 2:10:51Speaker 9: Can you have fireworks?
- 2:10:51Speaker 24: Yes, you can.
- 2:10:52Speaker 9: That is the ultimate. Make it happen.
- 2:10:55Speaker 42: I'll work on that.
- 2:10:57Speaker 1: Fireworks and a drone show and music.
- 2:11:01Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:11:01Speaker 1: By me.
- 2:11:02Speaker 9: Of course.
- 2:11:02Speaker 1: Who else?
- 2:11:05Speaker 4: All right.
- 2:11:06Speaker 1: We are here with Barbara Neff. Barbara, tell everybody again

- 2:21:52Speaker 1: Just go.
- 2:21:53Speaker 4: Go say hi to everyone.
- 2:21:54Speaker 26: Show your support.
- 2:21:56Speaker 4: It's not a walk-a-thon.
- 2:21:58Speaker 26: You have to walk 52 miles.
- 2:22:00Speaker 4: You can either talk or you can walk. Either one.
- 2:22:03Speaker 4: So it's just a A good.
- 2:22:04Speaker 26: Reason to come together and say, listen, basically the message,
- 2:22:08Speaker 26: keep your hands to yourself. I mean, that's the best
- 2:22:12Speaker 26: way I can do it, Steve, is say, you know,
- 2:22:14Speaker 26: there's different ways to argue and settle the argument, but
- 2:22:18Speaker 26: one of them is not domestic violence. So we try
- 2:22:21Speaker 26: to tell people and bring attention and awareness to this
- 2:22:24Speaker 26: issue that just about 30 to 40 percent of all
- 2:22:29Speaker 26: cases at the criminal courthouse in New London are domestic
- 2:22:32Speaker 26: violence related. So, State Futures Walk, this upcoming Sunday, you
- 2:22:39Speaker 26: don't have to pre-register.
- 2:22:41Speaker 4: You can show up. You can walk. You can talk.
- 2:22:43Speaker 50: You can lend a hand. You can, you know, if
- 2:22:46Speaker 50: you need help, that's.
- 2:22:48Speaker 4: The time to talk to people.
- 2:22:50Speaker 26: So, very excited to, I hate to have it, but
- 2:22:53Speaker 26: very excited to get all the people together.
- 2:22:55Speaker 1: And this isn't the first time you've had it either.
- 2:22:57Speaker 1: You've had it. This has been a huge success for
- 2:23:00Speaker 1: years now, correct?
- 2:23:01Speaker 5: Correct.
- 2:23:02Speaker 4: Yes.
- 2:23:02Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:23:03Speaker 4: And it's grown.
- 2:23:05Speaker 26: And, you know, from this stemmed conversations, which is all people,
- 2:23:10Speaker 26: you know, usually ask for. Let's just get the conversation started.
- 2:23:13Speaker 26: And some conversations are lengthy.
- 2:23:15Speaker 4: It takes time.
- 2:23:16Speaker 26: And, you know, different issues take different amounts of time.
- 2:23:20Speaker 26: And this one certainly has morphed into a family justice center,
- 2:23:25Speaker 26: which will be coming to Waterford.
- 2:23:26Speaker 4: And that is special. There's only a few around.
- 2:23:29Speaker 26: The entire country.
- 2:23:30Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:23:31Speaker 26: And as an example, someone who is a victim of
- 2:23:35Speaker 26: domestic violence, they perhaps had to go to 10 different
- 2:23:39Speaker 26: agencies and 10 different buildings to get the help they need.
- 2:23:43Speaker 26: This will all be wrapped into one, Steve.
- 2:23:45Speaker 4: So conversations led to this. There's a need.
- 2:23:49Speaker 26: The state of Connecticut has helped them with funding. But again,
- 2:23:53Speaker 26: they're a nonprofit. So they're just like everyone else who's
- 2:23:56Speaker 26: I hate to say fighting.
- 2:23:57Speaker 50: For the dollars, but, you know, just trying to say, hey,
- 2:23:59Speaker 50: look at me. You know, this is what we do.
- 2:24:02Speaker 4: So very proud to be part of that organization.
- 2:24:04Speaker 26: Then another one coming up October 18th is Cans to.
- 2:24:07Speaker 4: Dan and Stock to Stand. And that is in memory of.
- 2:24:11Speaker 26: Two great people from the town of Waterford, Dan Stewart
- 2:24:15Speaker 26: and Jody Nazarchik, who basically contributed their life to their town.
- 2:24:20Speaker 26: And whether you like them, don't like them, disagree with them,
- 2:24:23Speaker 26: whatever party they belong to, they did it. And years
- 2:24:28Speaker 26: and years and decades of countless hours. Another successful event,
- 2:24:33Speaker 26: which the drop-off will be at Philomena's, Steve, which, by
- 2:24:36Speaker 26: the way, in case you get lost, 262 Boston Post Road, Waterford, Connecticut.
- 2:24:40Speaker 1: Amazing. And their drop-off is Cans. It's Cans Foods. It's
- 2:24:43Speaker 1: all that stuff.
- 2:24:44Speaker 26: On Sunday, October 18th.
- 2:24:45Speaker 1: October 18th.
- 2:24:46Speaker 26: So a couple nice things to do, you know, that
- 2:24:50Speaker 26: people can join in and do their part. And I
- 2:24:53Speaker 26: say this to all of your listeners.
- 2:24:55Speaker 50: Is, Whatever you can do.
- 2:24:57Speaker 26: And it could be, hey, I can give this person
- 2:24:59Speaker 26: a ride.
- 2:25:00Speaker 4: Hey, I know somebody over here. It doesn't have to
- 2:25:02Speaker 4: be monetary.
- 2:25:03Speaker 26: It could be like, you know how they say, pack
- 2:25:05Speaker 26: the stands or show support.
- 2:25:07Speaker 4: Go there.
- 2:25:08Speaker 26: There'll be victims speaking, you know, at the walk. There'll
- 2:25:12Speaker 26: be law enforcement there. There'll be politicians there. There will
- 2:25:15Speaker 26: be just regular kids, you know, from colleges there participating.
- 2:25:19Speaker 26: And then the cancer, then we stock the stands. So
- 2:25:23Speaker 26: we reduce the cost.
- 2:25:24Speaker 4: Of all the items sold at the concession.
- 2:25:26Speaker 26: Stand, and then that money is filtered back into all
- 2:25:29Speaker 26: the sports programs. So just trying to do our part, Steve,
- 2:25:33Speaker 26: in this great community of eastern Connecticut.
- 2:25:35Speaker 1: Absolutely awesome. And, you know, this is what's great. And,
- 2:25:39Speaker 1: you know, for those out there who may not know,
- 2:25:41Speaker 1: very few of you, but if you may not know,
- 2:25:43Speaker 1: Mike is the owner of Philomena's in Waterford, and it
- 2:25:45Speaker 1: is an amazing spot. Fun venue, great menu, something like that,
- 2:25:49Speaker 1: how that goes.
- 2:25:50Speaker 4: Well, I change it, Steve, all the time. Like I'll
- 2:25:52Speaker 4: say it. Hey, great menu, flexible.
- 2:25:54Speaker 1: Venue because we have three event rooms.
- 2:25:56Speaker 4: You know what I mean?
- 2:25:56Speaker 17: Right.
- 2:25:57Speaker 4: Or live music venue.
- 2:25:58Speaker 50: Not that that has anything to do with you.
- 2:26:00Speaker 4: Because I don't know what you know about live music.
- 2:26:02Speaker 50: But anyway, you know, we.
- 2:26:03Speaker 4: Have it there.
- 2:26:04Speaker 1: Yeah, no, and it's great. And I guess my point, too, is,
- 2:26:08Speaker 1: you know, these events that you're doing, you know, this
- 2:26:11Speaker 1: isn't something new. You've been doing events at Philomena's to
- 2:26:13Speaker 1: help the community as long as you've been there. I mean,
- 2:26:17Speaker 1: and in any crisis that comes up, whether it had
- 2:26:19Speaker 1: been COVID or a hurricane, you know, whatever, you're the
- 2:26:25Speaker 1: first one out there helping the community in some way, shape,
- 2:26:28Speaker 1: or form. And, you know, it's amazing. And it doesn't
- 2:26:31Speaker 1: go unnoticed by everyone. I'm just letting you know that.
- 2:26:33Speaker 2: It's great.
- 2:26:34Speaker 26: I appreciate that very much. And you and your family
- 2:26:36Speaker 26: have been always a part of that.
- 2:26:38Speaker 4: And we have the same ideals. And, you know, we've
- 2:26:42Speaker 4: got to help people.
- 2:26:42Speaker 50: And some people just, you know, need a bump, need
- 2:26:45Speaker 50: a little boost.
- 2:26:45Speaker 4: I find this, Stephen. I don't know if you do.
- 2:26:49Speaker 26: But people are kind of on the simple, hey, I
- 2:26:52Speaker 26: just want a little bite to eat. I just want
- 2:26:54Speaker 26: to be left alone and have some comfort in my life.
- 2:26:58Speaker 50: So when those bumpy roads hit, we got to be there.
- 2:27:01Speaker 4: And truthfully, one of my.
- 2:27:03Speaker 26: Proudest moments in business was when COVID hit. And the
- 2:27:12Speaker 26: despair and the look of confusion and just people lost hope.
- 2:27:19Speaker 4: And I said, no way.
- 2:27:21Speaker 26: And I remember 250 nurses and doctors coming from Bacchus
- 2:27:26Speaker 26: and L & M at the.
- 2:27:28Speaker 4: Time, Yale.
- 2:27:29Speaker 26: And they drove in through Philomena's, no questions asked. We
- 2:27:33Speaker 26: just said, show me a badge. I guess that's a question,
- 2:27:36Speaker 26: just so we knew. And they were handed a a ham,
- 2:27:41Speaker 26: a bottle of wine, Girl Scout cookies, because the Girl
- 2:27:44Speaker 26: Scouts couldn't sell their cookies, so we bought them from
- 2:27:46Speaker 26: the Girl Scouts, and a pineapple. And so that was
- 2:27:52Speaker 26: a big deal. And people still today remember that.
- 2:27:56Speaker 4: It was just something like, hey, we got this.
- 2:27:58Speaker 50: We're going to be there.
- 2:27:59Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 2:28:00Speaker 26: And listen, statute of limitations, I hope it's worn off,
- 2:28:03Speaker 26: but at the time, you couldn't get hams.
- 2:28:06Speaker 20: Right.
- 2:28:07Speaker 26: And so I found a guy, being Italian, who diverted
- 2:28:11Speaker 26: some hams, 250.
- 2:28:13Speaker 4: Just for that cause.
- 2:28:15Speaker 26: And he's like, Mike, these got to go to Costco.
- 2:28:17Speaker 4: And this one and that one.
- 2:28:18Speaker 26: I go, nah, let's drop a truck off at Filomena's.
- 2:28:21Speaker 26: And I convinced a major supplier that the veterans could
- 2:28:25Speaker 26: use some hams that are nurses and healthcare workers and
- 2:28:30Speaker 26: and so forth, and it was a great moment for
- 2:28:32Speaker 26: me and a great moment for the community. So on
- 2:28:35Speaker 26: behalf of myself, my family, you know, my team, you.
- 2:28:39Speaker 4: Know, thank you so much to all.
- 2:28:40Speaker 26: The donors who helped me because it wasn't just me.
- 2:28:42Speaker 26: It was, you know, people like Benvenuti Oil and people
- 2:28:45Speaker 26: like Cactus Jack Foundation and all of these great groups
- 2:28:49Speaker 26: to help everybody.
- 2:28:50Speaker 4: So thank you again.
- 2:28:52Speaker 1: And you mentioned it just a second ago is vets.
- 2:28:55Speaker 1: You do a lot with vets, don't you?
- 2:28:58Speaker 4: A lot of events.
- 2:29:02Speaker 26: I just want to tell you this, Steve, that to
- 2:29:04Speaker 26: the veterans who have not been to Philomena's, I can
- 2:29:07Speaker 26: tell you that Congressman Courtney has been to Philomena's.
- 2:29:10Speaker 4: Both governors, well, Ned Lamont has been there twice.
- 2:29:15Speaker 26: Fazio has been there twice to Philomena's to check out
- 2:29:18Speaker 26: what we're doing to see the effect we have on
- 2:29:21Speaker 26: the community because we're more than a restaurant. And so
- 2:29:23Speaker 26: the veterans, we do a breakfast, complimentary breakfast, second Tuesday
- 2:29:28Speaker 26: of every month. And it has become the largest in
- 2:29:31Speaker 26: eastern Connecticut. Again, something I'm proud of.
- 2:29:34Speaker 4: And then, you know, people sponsor that as well. People
- 2:29:37Speaker 4: from the shack, they sponsor it.
- 2:29:40Speaker 26: Flanders, out of East Lyme, incredible people. They talk about
- 2:29:44Speaker 26: how good their donuts and bagels are. The people, incredible. So, like,
- 2:29:48Speaker 26: people join in.
- 2:29:49Speaker 4: Tom Garbati roofing, you know, and he joins in.
- 2:29:54Speaker 26: And all of a sudden, I got to tell you
- 2:29:55Speaker 26: this quick story about Tom. Very generous guy. He says, Mike,
- 2:29:59Speaker 26: how about I get some sweatshirts for the guys and gals.
- 2:30:01Speaker 4: You know, the vets? And I go, yeah, that'd be great.
- 2:30:03Speaker 26: And I didn't really tell him how many people go, Steve.
- 2:30:06Speaker 50: So I called him the next day.
- 2:30:09Speaker 4: I go, okay, 75 hats and 75 sweatshirts. And he's like, oh, okay.
- 2:30:13Speaker 26: But no, Tom was ready, willing, and able to do it.
- 2:30:16Speaker 3: Yeah, good guy.
- 2:30:17Speaker 4: He proudly did it.
- 2:30:18Speaker 26: And to see the, you know, the vets wearing the
- 2:30:21Speaker 26: sweatshirts and the hats in the winter, it's pretty awesome.
- 2:30:24Speaker 26: So it's meant to be, you know.
- 2:30:26Speaker 4: Some place.
- 2:30:28Speaker 26: That they cherish someplace that they can go to and.
- 2:30:32Speaker 4: Just have, you know, find comfort. And we laugh and
- 2:30:34Speaker 4: we joke.
- 2:30:35Speaker 45: Yeah.
- 2:30:35Speaker 50: It's not meant to be, you know, we're not.
- 2:30:37Speaker 26: Talking about homelessness vets and vets on drugs.
- 2:30:41Speaker 4: I don't do that. I uplift.
- 2:30:43Speaker 26: And let's talk about what's good in the world.
- 2:30:45Speaker 50: Let's talk about what's good in their world.
- 2:30:47Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 2:30:47Speaker 26: And let's see how we can, you know, combine our
- 2:30:49Speaker 26: efforts and enthusiasm to make a difference.
- 2:30:52Speaker 4: So, yeah. So to the veterans, yeah. please come, show up,
- 2:30:57Speaker 4: bring a friend.
- 2:30:58Speaker 1: I'll fill you in.
- 2:31:00Speaker 26: It's really a special time. And so very proud of
- 2:31:03Speaker 26: that as well. And we can go on, Terry Broder and,
- 2:31:07Speaker 26: you know, New London High School football, Fitch football. It
- 2:31:11Speaker 26: just keeps going. And because, you know, the people who
- 2:31:14Speaker 26: know that people will support them if they hold an
- 2:31:18Speaker 26: event at Philo's because the community has been really so
- 2:31:22Speaker 26: supportive So, so generous to anything I've done, and my
- 2:31:26Speaker 26: daughter now is doing it more.
- 2:31:28Speaker 1: Yeah, she's great.
- 2:31:29Speaker 4: I just relax a.
- 2:31:29Speaker 26: Little bit down in Charleston, South Carolina, but don't think
- 2:31:32Speaker 26: I'm sleeping, Mr.
- 2:31:33Speaker 10: Elsie.
- 2:31:33Speaker 4: Never.
- 2:31:33Speaker 1: Do not think I'm sleeping. I would never think that.
- 2:31:36Speaker 1: All right. No, but I want to say, as I
- 2:31:39Speaker 1: told everybody this morning, is I'm taking a new job
- 2:31:43Speaker 1: for the Easter Seals up at Rally Point. And I'll
- 2:31:46Speaker 1: be dealing with veterans solely and helping them with technology, recreation,
- 2:31:51Speaker 1: computer work, building resumes, and getting back into the force.
- 2:31:54Speaker 1: So maybe we can have a little bit of a
- 2:31:57Speaker 1: conversation at some point. Maybe I can help get a
- 2:31:59Speaker 1: lot more people to Philomena's.
- 2:32:02Speaker 4: I would love that.
- 2:32:02Speaker 26: And what I would offer you too, Steve, is if
- 2:32:05Speaker 26: you'd like to speak.
- 2:32:06Speaker 4: In front of the group or bring when you get hired.
- 2:32:09Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:32:10Speaker 26: Did they do a background check on you, by the way?
- 2:32:13Speaker 1: Not yet. I'm a little nervous about that, to be
- 2:32:16Speaker 1: honest with you.
- 2:32:16Speaker 50: That hasn't come through, okay, because I didn't.
- 2:32:18Speaker 4: Get any calls. I'm just letting you know.
- 2:32:20Speaker 1: Might not happen.
- 2:32:20Speaker 4: Stay in the job market, okay? But no, it's good.
- 2:32:24Speaker 50: They got a good catch. They got a good man.
- 2:32:26Speaker 50: But you can speak to them and leave pamphlets, and
- 2:32:30Speaker 50: they may.
- 2:32:31Speaker 4: Sign up.
- 2:32:32Speaker 50: They may say, oh, my God, I.
- 2:32:33Speaker 4: Could, you know, I have a.
- 2:32:34Speaker 26: Brother or cousin who could.
- 2:32:35Speaker 4: So, please, second Tuesday.
- 2:32:37Speaker 26: Oh, it's at 9 a.m., Steve, for all the listeners
- 2:32:40Speaker 26: and you.
- 2:32:41Speaker 4: We'd like to collaborate. So that's great. Congratulations. Right.
- 2:32:44Speaker 1: No, it's great. And I know, you know, above all
- 2:32:48Speaker 1: the community stuff that you do, you're still also out
- 2:32:50Speaker 1: in the town and a bit political. And I've seen
- 2:32:52Speaker 1: a couple of posts recently from yours, you know, from
- 2:32:55Speaker 1: New London and other places and trying to clean up
- 2:32:57Speaker 1: place and putting your opinions in on a lot of things.
- 2:33:01Speaker 27: Yeah.
- 2:33:01Speaker 1: What do you think about all that? Yeah.
- 2:33:03Speaker 26: Politics, it's not really a party. And I got to
- 2:33:08Speaker 26: tell you, it's really not that fun.
- 2:33:11Speaker 4: I've been in it.
- 2:33:12Speaker 26: I'm around it. And when people say, oh, this party,
- 2:33:16Speaker 26: that party, it's really not a party.
- 2:33:18Speaker 4: It's not fun.
- 2:33:18Speaker 26: It's, you know, people don't like to cut education. People
- 2:33:21Speaker 26: don't like to, you know, cut, you know, to different
- 2:33:25Speaker 26: groups and Right. But at the same time, you have
- 2:33:28Speaker 26: to balance, right?
- 2:33:29Speaker 4: You have to balance.
- 2:33:30Speaker 26: And that's the key word of, like, you know, taxpayers versus,
- 2:33:33Speaker 26: you know, people in need versus, you know, Waterford Beach.
- 2:33:39Speaker 4: Do you put money into that? Yeah.
- 2:33:41Speaker 50: You know, do you need new fields?
- 2:33:42Speaker 4: And so you can't have everything.
- 2:33:44Speaker 26: And so, you know, I say this. In the town
- 2:33:47Speaker 26: of Waterford, which I know real estate, that's one thing
- 2:33:50Speaker 26: I'll put my– I'm going to tap myself on the shoulder.
- 2:33:53Speaker 26: And Waterford is a very– probably the most reasonably priced
- 2:33:58Speaker 26: town in eastern Connecticut.
- 2:34:00Speaker 4: And I'll tell you why.
- 2:34:01Speaker 26: Marble, Ledger, New London, East Lyme, taxes are through the roof.
- 2:34:05Speaker 50: And many times, in many cases, Lake East Lyme, not only.
- 2:34:09Speaker 4: Is the taxes high, but the value of the home
- 2:34:11Speaker 4: is higher. So it's a double whammy. Waterford has done
- 2:34:15Speaker 4: a great job.
- 2:34:16Speaker 26: And I will say this, bipartisan, which is what I love.
- 2:34:21Speaker 50: I really have no idea who's who.
- 2:34:23Speaker 26: Except for the big names that are going for office
- 2:34:26Speaker 26: that are on the lawns every day. But other than that,
- 2:34:31Speaker 26: my family started Michael's Dairy, and my father started Michael's Arco.
- 2:34:36Speaker 4: I built a neighborhood in New London.
- 2:34:38Speaker 50: I really didn't ask them, people come in.
- 2:34:41Speaker 26: Are you Democrat, are you Republican, are you Green?
- 2:34:45Speaker 4: They're people.
- 2:34:46Speaker 49: Yeah.
- 2:34:46Speaker 26: And that's how we have to start to look at people.
- 2:34:48Speaker 26: And I wish there were no parties.
- 2:34:50Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:34:51Speaker 4: And people could just say that.
- 2:34:52Speaker 1: I wish that, too. There were no parties. I really do.
- 2:34:54Speaker 1: You just vote for the person and what they believe in. But,
- 2:34:56Speaker 1: you know, you've got to, you know.
- 2:34:57Speaker 4: I think, Steve, our small town, we could do a pilot.
- 2:34:59Speaker 4: We could do it.
- 2:35:00Speaker 26: Because, truthfully, there's no money coming down from the big,
- 2:35:04Speaker 26: you know, from the big state coffers of the Democratic
- 2:35:08Speaker 26: Party or the Republican Party. They're not getting funded huge
- 2:35:12Speaker 26: in our little town.
- 2:35:13Speaker 20: Yeah.
- 2:35:14Speaker 50: So I think we can do it.
- 2:35:15Speaker 4: I just, you know, take the label off and put
- 2:35:18Speaker 4: the names up there. Just see what happens. Like, don't
- 2:35:21Speaker 4: be afraid. We don't have to do stuff that we did.
- 2:35:23Speaker 26: The same way 75 years ago.
- 2:35:25Speaker 4: Or 100 years ago. Go for the person. Because once
- 2:35:28Speaker 4: you start doing that, it opens your eyes.
- 2:35:31Speaker 26: Because truthfully, our friends and my friends, your friends, some people.
- 2:35:36Speaker 4: Just, they just vote. They're going all D or all R.
- 2:35:39Speaker 26: And sometimes that's not fair to the.
- 2:35:41Speaker 50: Candidate because they're like, wait a minute, I just, I'm
- 2:35:44Speaker 50: more like this.
- 2:35:45Speaker 4: Than I am.
- 2:35:46Speaker 26: And it gets frustrating for them because, you know, unfortunately
- 2:35:50Speaker 26: they're lumped into a, you know, whatever basket people choose
- 2:35:54Speaker 26: to do without even talking to them.
- 2:35:56Speaker 1: I hear you.
- 2:35:58Speaker 26: Truthfully, I'm hopeful that, you know, people, there's debates and
- 2:36:02Speaker 26: people listen to them and form their ideas and, you know,
- 2:36:07Speaker 26: get to meet the person and.
- 2:36:08Speaker 50: Shoot them an email, shoot them a text.
- 2:36:10Speaker 26: Hey, I just need to clarify something because, Something that's
- 2:36:14Speaker 26: important to me may not be important to you, Steve,
- 2:36:16Speaker 26: or may not be important to Jane or Joe. Maybe
- 2:36:21Speaker 26: health care. I'm 55 years old, so now I'm looking
- 2:36:23Speaker 26: at health care for the next 10 years.
- 2:36:25Speaker 4: What am I doing?
- 2:36:26Speaker 26: What kind of coverage? But I'm not worried about college
- 2:36:30Speaker 26: loans anymore, which other people are. I bought a car,
- 2:36:34Speaker 26: and it's not a new car.
- 2:36:36Speaker 4: It's a used car, but I have five years.
- 2:36:38Speaker 50: So I'm not really worried about that.
- 2:36:39Speaker 4: But someone else.
- 2:36:41Speaker 26: Their decision to buy a car now is coming up.
- 2:36:43Speaker 17: I know.
- 2:36:44Speaker 4: And that's on their mind. And then the housing.
- 2:36:46Speaker 26: Like, you know, people are trying to buy houses, but
- 2:36:50Speaker 26: there's other people with 3%.
- 2:36:52Speaker 4: Loans that they're not getting out of the house.
- 2:36:54Speaker 26: And so, you know, here's an idea for that, by
- 2:36:57Speaker 26: the way.
- 2:36:57Speaker 4: I got to give you an idea. Otherwise, I'm just talking.
- 2:36:59Speaker 1: All right. We got 90 seconds.
- 2:37:01Speaker 26: Let that mortgage be transferred over so people can move on.
- 2:37:04Speaker 26: If somebody's in a 3% mortgage and the other person
- 2:37:07Speaker 26: who's buying.
- 2:37:08Speaker 4: You know, is... has good credit or whatever, and.
- 2:37:12Speaker 26: It's not 8%, take.
- 2:37:15Speaker 4: The 3% off. I mean, do the 3%. Let the
- 2:37:18Speaker 4: bank say, you know what? We'll move that mortgage. You know,
- 2:37:22Speaker 4: reassign it to you.
- 2:37:23Speaker 26: And I think that's a good way to open up
- 2:37:25Speaker 26: some more housing and some other ways.
- 2:37:27Speaker 4: It can be done.
- 2:37:28Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:37:28Speaker 50: It's just got to be creative.
- 2:37:30Speaker 4: And look at you. You're a creative guy.
- 2:37:32Speaker 1: I'm a creative guy.
- 2:37:33Speaker 10: You do.
- 2:37:34Speaker 4: You go to different things at different events.
- 2:37:36Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 2:37:37Speaker 26: You know, one day you're, You know, no Kings Parade
- 2:37:39Speaker 26: the next day.
- 2:37:40Speaker 4: You're doing a kid's event.
- 2:37:41Speaker 1: Well, I got something creative for you. Again, we're on
- 2:37:44Speaker 1: with Mike Bersetto finishing up right here. Here's my creative
- 2:37:46Speaker 1: thought for you for Philomena's real quick. This is it.
- 2:37:49Speaker 1: You know, I love the place. It's great, but it's
- 2:37:51Speaker 1: missing something, Mike. It's missing something. You want to know
- 2:37:54Speaker 1: what it's missing?
- 2:37:55Speaker 4: What?
- 2:37:55Speaker 1: You always call me Stevie Wonder, right? You're missing the
- 2:37:59Speaker 1: Stevie Wonder. The black bean burger with lettuce, tomato, and
- 2:38:02Speaker 1: a side of steak fries. The black bean burger. Stevie Wonder.
- 2:38:06Speaker 1: I guarantee you'll sell about six of them.
- 2:38:08Speaker 27: Stevie Wonder.
- 2:38:09Speaker 4: All right, at least.
- 2:38:10Speaker 1: You'll sell one. You'll sell one.
- 2:38:12Speaker 9: Maybe two. Maybe.
- 2:38:13Speaker 4: Maybe. Hey, you're motor bulls. I might get you for two.
- 2:38:17Speaker 9: I might get you for two.
- 2:38:18Speaker 1: Mike, thanks for being on today. And thank you all
- 2:38:21Speaker 1: for listening. I'm Steve Elsie. We'll see you next week.
