- 0:01Romans Chapter 7. Let us pray, oh Lord, our God
- 0:08who reigns on high, we love you, King Jesus.
- 0:12Lord, we exalt you over all of our emotions and circumstances.
- 0:17We exalt you over every single person, over every single thing
- 0:23that tries to tear us away. God, from the love and from the
- 0:27communion. God that we share with you.
- 0:31God, we lay down all of our own wants and desires and passions.
- 0:37And God, we take up our cross, Lord, knowing that it brings the
- 0:41eternal life, knowing that it brings the abundant life,
- 0:44knowing that will never be put to shame.
- 0:48Jesus Christ, because of what you did for us.
- 0:51God, I pray that we can let go of all of the things that are
- 0:55entangling us and ensnaring us. God, all of the briars and the
- 1:00thistles and the tares, Lord, that try to choke out the
- 1:03fruitfulness. God, we pray against the bird
- 1:06coming and snatching the seed. God, we pray against the enemy.
- 1:11God, we pray against the accuser of the brethren coming and
- 1:15trying to snatch away the fruitfulness of your word that
- 1:19goes out, Lord, as a beacon of light, as a lighthouse God,
- 1:24drawing many men unto salvation in the remission of their sins.
- 1:28God, I pray in the name of Jesus for a deep, deep, deep growth
- 1:33roots that go down and support the mighty oaks that grow.
- 1:38Father, I pray against shallow soil today.
- 1:41God, I pray against shallowness today.
- 1:43Let's go deep with you, Father. You're the Mariana Trench.
- 1:47God, You're the unsearchable God.
- 1:50You are the the treasure in the field, Father, and I pray that
- 1:53Lord, we've counted the cost. We know that you are worth all
- 1:58of our life from the birth all the way to our death.
- 2:02Lord, come and get us. Father, bring us to yourselves.
- 2:06Show us more of your glory, God, come and get your glory.
- 2:09God, we just want more of you. We want to be found in you and
- 2:13you and us and producing much fruit.
- 2:16God, I pray that we do not leave the fruit on the branch.
- 2:19I pray that the heart harvest will be plenty and the workers
- 2:22will also be plenty. Father, I pray that many people
- 2:26will come and join us. God, in the work that you're
- 2:30doing. Lord, as we're going out into
- 2:32the highways and the byways, Lord, as we're going out and
- 2:36saving those firebrands out of the fire, God, put your
- 2:40righteousness upon us. God, put your white robes.
- 2:45God, put the robes dipped in your blood.
- 2:47God on us. Lord, you are faithful and true.
- 2:50Lord, you are coming soon. God, we see our redemption
- 2:54drawing near. Lord, we just want you.
- 2:57We want more of you. We want to be filled with your
- 3:00self, Lord. We want to be filled with your
- 3:03words, God. We want to be filled with the
- 3:05mind of Christ, God, we just want you.
- 3:08And so Lord, I just prayed that today will be the day of
- 3:11salvation for many. I pray that there will be many
- 3:14that come into the fold. We hear your voice, God, and we
- 3:17obey your voice, God, and we hear that still small voice,
- 3:22Lord, And we sit in your presence, Lord, and we receive
- 3:26from you, God. Give us the impartation today of
- 3:30your holiness, God. Sanctify us, God, as we
- 3:34consecrate this temple. Lord, I pray that we can get rid
- 3:38of anything that is holding us back.
- 3:40God, I pray that Holy Spirit, you will put your finger on
- 3:44anything in our lives that's holding us back from
- 3:47experiencing the fullness of God Almighty.
- 3:50And Lord, we love you. King Jesus, show us your eternal
- 3:52paths. Take us to new heights with you.
- 3:55Father, break our heart for what breaks yours.
- 3:58Help us to see this world all around around us the way that
- 4:01you do. Help us to see the people that
- 4:04we come into contact with every single day the way that you do.
- 4:08Father, I pray for the loss today.
- 4:11I pray for those that are addicted today, God, I pray that
- 4:15you will change that addiction towards you.
- 4:18Let them get addicted to the Holy Spirit.
- 4:20Let them get addicted to your word, God.
- 4:23Let them be addicted to doing whatever it is that you've
- 4:26called them into the perfect and pleasing will for their lives.
- 4:30Father, I pray you'll switch those addictions, God.
- 4:34And I pray in the name of Jesus for the hurting today, for the
- 4:38malnourished today. I pray, God, that will be the
- 4:41answer to that. God, I pray that we'll stay and
- 4:44in the gap with intercessory prayer, I pray that we'll give
- 4:47up the luxuries of this life to be able to send it ahead.
- 4:52God, let us send the treasures ahead unto you, God, by
- 4:56supporting all of the things that you're doing in this world
- 4:59all around us. God, I pray against the schemes
- 5:02of the enemy. God silenced the voice of the
- 5:05accuser today God. Silence that voice today.
- 5:08Silence the lies that are getting spoken over your
- 5:12children today, God. I pray that we can let go of the
- 5:15rat race of this world that will let go of all of the things,
- 5:20Lord, that are trying to distract us from you, Lord.
- 5:24And I pray that we will be hyper fixated upon your face, hyper
- 5:29fixated upon your will for our lives, God, and not going off
- 5:35either side of the road. But we will stay, God, rooted
- 5:38and grounded in your word today and reveal to us the unrevealed
- 5:43things, Lord, of where we should go and what we should do God,
- 5:48and how this day should go. Reveal to us those things by us
- 5:52getting into the word. Let us be like the Bereans, God
- 5:55searching the scriptures daily. I thank you, God, for your
- 5:59eternal words. God, I thank you for the
- 6:02infallible, inerrant word. God, I thank you for the Rhema.
- 6:05Thank you God, that this word is alive and active.
- 6:08God, let us rightly divide it today.
- 6:10Lord, we love you, King Jesus, and it's in your holy and
- 6:13precious name that I pray. Amen.
- 6:18Let's start in verse one. Know you not brothers, for I
- 6:27speak to them that know the law how that the law has dominion
- 6:34over a man as long as he lives. So here he is.
- 6:38Paul's about to wax eloquently. He's about to let us know that
- 6:44the law is in opposition to to the Spirit.
- 6:50Friends, the flesh and the spirit, they do not cohabitate
- 6:54and they are at war with one another.
- 6:56And we must choose who we're going to obey.
- 7:00Are you going to obey your carnal fleshly desires, or are
- 7:04you going to give in to this grace and in to the Spirit?
- 7:10And if you walk in the Spirit, you will not satisfy the lusts
- 7:15of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life will
- 7:18have no power over you. Friends, those are not from God.
- 7:22And Paul is going to show us here how to have victory.
- 7:27We must first identify that there are two warring members
- 7:31within us trying to rule the day.
- 7:34And we must subdue the flesh. We must subdue the carnal
- 7:39desires, and we must walk in the Spirit.
- 7:43Verse 2 For the woman which has a husband is bound by the law to
- 7:49her husband so long as he lives. But if the husband be dead,
- 7:54she's loosed from the law of her husband.
- 7:56So what He's wanting us to know is that the law died, Friends,
- 8:03whenever Jesus Christ was risen from the dead and He snatched
- 8:08the keys to death and to Hades, you need to know that He
- 8:13satisfied all of the Law. We cannot let our works be the
- 8:18measure of how much we love God or where our standing is with
- 8:22God, where our right standing is with God.
- 8:25You cannot see that from your works, friends.
- 8:28It is only by being indwelled by the Holy Spirit and knowing
- 8:32Jesus Christ Christ as your personal Savior that you can
- 8:35start to walk in the Spirit as He gives you the Holy Spirit.
- 8:40Verse 3. So then if while her husband
- 8:43lives she be married to another man, she shall be called an
- 8:47adulteress, but if her husband is dead, she's free from the
- 8:51law, so that she is no adulteress though she be married
- 8:56to another man. We were once married to the
- 8:59flesh. We were once married to the law,
- 9:02and it was through the law that revealed our need for the Lord
- 9:05Jesus Christ. But now that law is dead and we
- 9:09are married and yoked up with Jesus Christ.
- 9:12We are the bride and He is the groom, and we are waiting for
- 9:16Him. We're married, we are his bride.
- 9:20For wherefore, my brothers, you also are become dead to the law
- 9:27by the body of Christ, that you should be married to another,
- 9:33even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring
- 9:37forth fruit unto God. So here He's letting us know
- 9:42that when we are in Christ Jesus and the Holy Spirit is in us, we
- 9:49are not a slave to the law, we're not a slave to the flesh
- 9:54anymore. We're not married to that.
- 9:57And this would have been of great importance to the first
- 10:03early century Christians who were coming in.
- 10:07And there was an idea here that they had to come through Moses
- 10:11and had to be circumcised, and they had to obey all of the law
- 10:16in order to come in to God's acceptance.
- 10:20And Paul here is refuting that whole idea and letting them know
- 10:25that all of that is dead. It was fulfilled and Christ
- 10:30expounded upon it. He didn't just abolish it, He
- 10:34expounded upon it and He made it.
- 10:38Of importance to those who will come to Him is that they need to
- 10:44know that all of it was fulfilled in Him and they do not
- 10:48need to be circumcised. They do not need to try to
- 10:51uphold all of the traditions that Christ fulfilled every
- 10:55single bit of it. Not that He went and said it
- 10:59wasn't good. It was just for us to see that
- 11:02there was no way we could ever make it to God Almighty without
- 11:06Him coming and living the perfect life that He did.
- 11:12We got to bring the fruit unto God, and it must come from our
- 11:17relationship with Him through Jesus Christ. 5 For when we were
- 11:23in the flesh, the motions of sins which were by the law, did
- 11:28work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death.
- 11:32That is not a a hard concept for anybody who came to the Lord
- 11:37Jesus Christ late in the game. It's not a hard concept to
- 11:41understand that when we were following after our sinful
- 11:46desires, all it produced was death. 6 But now we are
- 11:54delivered from the law, that being dead, wherein we were
- 11:59held, that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in
- 12:05the oldness of the letter. So that's what you need to know.
- 12:10This newness, friends, if anyone is in Christ, he's a new
- 12:15creation, and we can have that renewing of our minds, friends,
- 12:20through the washing of the word over us and cleansing us. 7 What
- 12:27shall we say then? Is the law sin?
- 12:32God forbid? No, I had not known sin, but by
- 12:38the law, for I had not known lust, except the law had said
- 12:45you shall not covet. So that's what you need to know
- 12:48here, friends, is that he's saying, should we?
- 12:58What shall we say then? Is the law sin?
- 13:00Should we consider the law sin? Absolutely not.
- 13:06But the law revealed to us our sinfulness and our inability to
- 13:12ever save ourselves. That was the whole point of the
- 13:16whole crux of the whole matter, friends, is that God gave the
- 13:20Law in order to point us to Christ.
- 13:25He knew that we could never fulfill it to the letter, but we
- 13:29desperately needed one who could.
- 13:31And that's exactly what Christ did in His 33 years on this
- 13:37earth. He lived a perfect, sinless life
- 13:40and fulfilled all of the law. So that you and I are not under
- 13:45the law, but we are under grace. Friends, we would not even know
- 13:53what sin is unless the Law had showed us what sin was a But sin
- 14:00taking occasion by the commandment, wrought in me all
- 14:05manner of coveting. For without the law, sin was
- 14:11dead. So that's what you need to know
- 14:14is that from Adam all the way to Moses that they were unaware of
- 14:22all of the sins, even though God had placed eternity into our
- 14:26hearts and minds and we have conscience.
- 14:29God gave the Law through Moses to show us as we progressed
- 14:35further and further on that we were guilty and we were in
- 14:40desperate need of a Savior and his name is Jesus Christ. 9/4 I
- 14:48was alive without the law once, but when the commandment came,
- 14:53sin revived and I died. So here Paul is trying to paint
- 14:58the picture to us that before we could see sin and what sin
- 15:04actually was, we thought that we were alive, but we were only
- 15:10deceived and we were heading down into the darkest pits of
- 15:15despair. And once we can see sin for what
- 15:21it actually truly is, it's death, friends.
- 15:25And there are many today who think that hell is a joke.
- 15:31There are many today who think that their lifestyle is
- 15:37happiness, that their lifestyle is joyful.
- 15:41Their simple lifestyle brings them so much.
- 15:47But what they're going to find as time goes on, that they are
- 15:52serving the Father of lies. And it is only thieving.
- 15:58It is only stealing, killing. It is only destruction and it is
- 16:05only eternal damnation. And Paul here was saying before
- 16:11he knew Christ, he thought he was alive, but he realized he
- 16:15was just dead. 10 And the commandment which was ordained
- 16:20to life I found to be unto death.
- 16:24So he's saying that as he went about trying to fulfill all the
- 16:31law as a Pharisee of the Pharisees, thinking that was
- 16:35going to bring eternal life. Now that he is in Christ, he
- 16:39sees that it was only death upon death. 11 For sin taking
- 16:48occasion by the commandment deceived me, and by it slew me.
- 16:54That is why Paul was upholding all of the traditions, all of
- 17:00the requirements of a Pharisee. He was a Pharisee of Pharisees,
- 17:06came from the school of Gamaliel and was looked up to.
- 17:10He was so zealous for God that he even persecuted the early
- 17:15church. And here, now that he is
- 17:19indwelled with the Holy Spirit, now that he has met the
- 17:23resurrected Christ and communed with him, now he could see that
- 17:30there was perpetual frustration. There was no satisfaction, there
- 17:36was no atonement. There was no peace with God
- 17:40because he did not have Jesus Christ.
- 17:44And now that Jesus Christ has arrived on the scene, He flipped
- 17:49everything over. He turned the world right side
- 17:52up, friends. And we can see our need for a
- 17:55Savior. We can see that we could never
- 17:58save ourselves. 12 Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment
- 18:07holy, and just and good. So he's saying that Jesus Christ
- 18:12did not come to abolish the law, but to fulfill it, and he filled
- 18:16it to the last letter, Friends. 13 Was then that which is good
- 18:22made death unto me, God forbid. How many of these God forbids.
- 18:29As Paul said here, we can see that there is futile thinking
- 18:37whenever we try to rationalize our sinful behavior.
- 18:42You can see here that we cannot abolish the law.
- 18:46We cannot just call the law sin. Friends, we cannot just sin so
- 18:52that grace can abound. He's showing us the futility of
- 18:56that reasoning and we should not approach God that way.
- 19:02And this to to wrap it all up and to show you what he's trying
- 19:07to say in the most simple terms, friends, is this.
- 19:14When you came to the Lord Jesus Christ, he gave you a license to
- 19:20sin. There might be many of you who
- 19:25understand that that is not right, but bear with me.
- 19:31You have a license. Every single sin that you've
- 19:35ever committed, our committing or will commit is under the
- 19:38blood of Jesus Christ. But if you truly know Him, you
- 19:41will never use that license. That's what you need to know.
- 19:46You are forgiven and it is by grace.
- 19:49But we do not abuse that. We do not abuse it, but when we
- 19:54sin, not if, but when we sin, we do not let condemnation rule the
- 20:01day. We do not let the devil have a
- 20:05heyday by calling our salvation into question.
- 20:11All we do is we confess those things, we repent of those
- 20:16things, and we allow him to sanctify us.
- 20:24God forbid. That we keep sinning so that
- 20:29it'll work death and that death try to tries to get turned
- 20:34around into good. 14 four, We know that the law is spiritual,
- 20:42but I am carnal, sold under sin. So there was a purpose and a
- 20:47reasoning for God to give the law and to Moses for all the
- 20:52Israelites to try and follow. And the reasoning behind it is
- 20:57to point them towards Christ. And here Paul is showing
- 21:02humility. Paul is showing his inability as
- 21:06a Pharisee of Pharisees to try and uphold all of the letter of
- 21:12the law. Here we go. 15 For that which I
- 21:19do, I allow not for what I would that do I not, but what I hate
- 21:29that do I, I do the things that I don't want to do and I don't
- 21:35do the things that I do want to do is essentially what Paul is
- 21:40trying to show us here, that we need Christ, we need the Holy
- 21:49Spirit. We have to rely on the Holy
- 21:52Spirit. We cannot rely on our own flesh
- 21:56and our own reasonings and our own instincts and our own power.
- 22:00We will be put to shame and dismay every single time we
- 22:06leave the leading and the promptings of the Holy Spirit.
- 22:10When we grieve the Holy Spirit, we sear our consciences,
- 22:15friends, and he becomes silent in our lives and we go off just
- 22:21like Samson. We go off thinking the Lord is
- 22:24with us and he's not. And we get pummeled by sin, we
- 22:29get pummeled by the demonic, we get pummeled by Satan whenever
- 22:34we are not indwelled with the Holy Spirit and full of the Holy
- 22:38Spirit. And it's available to us.
- 22:40Friends, we do not have to give in to all of this.
- 22:43What you will find as time goes on is that this Romans 7, do
- 22:48what I don't want to do and do the things I don't want to do,
- 22:51and don't do the things I do want to do.
- 22:54What you're going to find is this window starts to shut and
- 22:58it gets closer and closer together, and as sanctification
- 23:03increases, you will not fall for all of these traps any longer.
- 23:08You're going to see this gap getting shorter and shorter and
- 23:16shorter, and that is the goal. Friends 16 If then I do that
- 23:23which I would not, I consent unto the law that it is good. 17
- 23:31Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwells in me.
- 23:3818 For I know that in me that is in my flesh dwells no good
- 23:45thing, for to will is present with me.
- 23:49But how to perform that which is good?
- 23:52I find not. There is nothing good in US, no,
- 23:56not one thing. Let every man be a liar, and all
- 24:01of our righteousness is filthy rags.
- 24:04That is the purpose and the plan that Jesus Christ wants us to
- 24:09know, that it is only by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit
- 24:13that we can do anything good. He asked the rich young ruler,
- 24:17Why do you you call me good? Only God is good and you need to
- 24:22know that Jesus Christ is God and if we are indwelled with the
- 24:26Holy Spirit, that is all the good that we can possess in our
- 24:31flesh. There is nothing good, and even
- 24:34as a new regenerate creation, we still have to war within our
- 24:42flesh until we are delivered from this body of death. 19 For
- 24:47the good that I would, I do not, but the evil which I would not,
- 24:53that I do. So here you can see this inner
- 24:58turmoil, and this really describes a new believer as they
- 25:02are being sanctified. And as you get a little along
- 25:06with the Lord, you're going to see this gap closing.
- 25:09And it does not mean that we ever arrive on this side of
- 25:13glory. You are going to struggle from
- 25:17now until the end of your life, and that might be dampening to
- 25:21your Spirit. But I want you to know there is
- 25:24victory in Christ and we do not have to keep repeating the same
- 25:29sins. He's going to work on sins that
- 25:33you're not even aware of yet, as He sanctifies you and gets you
- 25:38ready for all of eternity. 20 Now if I do that, I would not.
- 25:44It is no more I that do it, but sin that dwells in me. 21 I find
- 25:49then a law that when I would do good, evil is present with me.
- 25:5522 For I delight in the law of God after the inward man. 23 But
- 26:01I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my
- 26:06mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin,
- 26:11which is in my members. So that is the importance,
- 26:14friends, of bringing every thought into captivity and
- 26:19making them obedient unto Christ.
- 26:23And that is the discipline and the daily practice that we all
- 26:27must adhere to. When you allow your mind to
- 26:30want, when you allow your eyes to wander, when you allow your
- 26:34ears to just take in anything without even being conscience of
- 26:39what it is doing to the inner man, to the Spirit of God that
- 26:43lives inside of you as it grieves the Spirit.
- 26:46As you watch that garbage, as you lust after the material
- 26:50things in this world, you will see that there is this war
- 26:54that's going on within you as you finally get to a place where
- 26:59you can start to take every thought captive when you no
- 27:03longer just allow your mind to wander on, which will result in
- 27:07your actions later. Friends, you must have sin that
- 27:11is perceived before it is ever conceived.
- 27:14And you see that with David on the rooftop when he stares down
- 27:18at Bathsheba. He was perceiving that sin
- 27:22before he ever called for and before he ever had the
- 27:24adulterous affair, before he ever murdered her husband.
- 27:28And that is what you're going to find when you will not take your
- 27:31thoughts into captive is it leads to death.
- 27:34It leads to separation from God Almighty.
- 27:37It leads to your demise, friends.
- 27:39It leads to the grieving of the Holy Spirit and the searing of
- 27:44your conscience. You must pray about everything.
- 27:47You must have Him in the forefront of every decision of
- 27:51every day for every second, friends, and it is disciplined
- 27:55that that can happen. And if you are not there yet,
- 27:59pray to God Almighty to help you to get rid of all of the lusts
- 28:04and to get rid of all of the things that are more
- 28:07entertaining to you than God and His Word and prayer.
- 28:13If you are addicted to sin and addicted to this culture and
- 28:17addicted to all of the disgusting things that this
- 28:21world keeps propagating, ask God for deliverance from those
- 28:26things today. Friends, there's hope for you
- 28:29today because you woke up. Today is the day of salvation
- 28:33for you. 24 O wretched man that I am, who shall deliver me from
- 28:48the body of this death. What you need to know is one of
- 28:55the capital punishments of Paul's day is they would chain a
- 28:59man up to a dead body and the rotting of that person's flesh
- 29:04would spread unto the man that was chained to him.
- 29:07And that is what he's referencing here.
- 29:09But he's also referencing the lustful, carnal man.
- 29:15And we need deliverance from him.
- 29:16And the only one who has the power to deliver us from it is
- 29:20Jesus Christ and Jesus alone. There's no deliverance apart
- 29:27from the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, which is the name above
- 29:31all names. Bring that name upon your lips
- 29:34and watch the darkness flee. We'll end on 25I thank God
- 29:42through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind, I myself
- 29:50serve the law of God, but with the flesh, the law of sin, we
- 29:59will one day be rescued from this carnal mortal body that is
- 30:06wasting away, that is subject to the judgment that God gave it
- 30:13back in the garden, and we will be with Him forever as immortal.
- 30:21And all we really want is Him and everything we do is for Him.
- 30:26It is not for eternal life. It is not for the rewards.
- 30:31And because we have that mindset, eternal life and reward
- 30:35shall follow. It is Jesus Christ alone that we
- 30:38press towards. I hope you've been blessed by
- 30:41this amazing chapter here in God's Word.
- 30:49I love you, I'm praying for you. We'll see you back here
- 31:01tomorrow. God bless you.
