- 0:04Marvin Cash: Hey, folks, it's Marvin Cash, the host of the articulate fly. And we're
- 0:07back with another central PA fishing report with George Costa from
- 0:10TcO fly shop in state college. How are you, George?
- 0:13George Costa: I am amazing as always, Marvin. How are you?
- 0:16Marvin Cash: Uh, you sound super excited. Did you get a lot of cool stuff in your Easter
- 0:18basket?
- 0:20George Costa: I did. I got some Cadbury eggs
- 0:23and I got some peep and all sorts of
- 0:25teeth rotting stuff.
- 0:26Marvin Cash: It was delicious. Awesome. What color peeps?
- 0:30George Costa: The yellow.
- 0:31Marvin Cash: That's the only true color.
- 0:32George Costa: Everyone knows that.
- 0:33Marvin Cash: You didn't do pink or lavender?
- 0:36George Costa: No, no, just the yellow ones. I like the standard yellow
- 0:38people.
- 0:39Marvin Cash: And you strike me as an artisanal jellybean.
- 0:41George Costa: Dude, that's too much for me. That's too much
- 0:44stress.
- 0:49Marvin Cash: Well, uh, you know, it may deal.
- 0:51George Costa: With those popcorn flavored jelly beans. That's too much for my mind to
- 0:54handle.
- 0:54Marvin Cash: Uh, where you have to literally, it's like harder than, like,
- 0:57identifying dry flies and spinners that have to lay the chart
- 1:00out and, like, color match them crew exactly.
- 1:03George Costa: I don't have that kind of time.
- 1:04Marvin Cash: Yeah, so although you do have some time,
- 1:07I, uh, looked at your weather and I mean, you know, east coast, we've gotten
- 1:10ripped with a ton of rain lately.
- 1:12George Costa: It is a h o t m m e
- 1:15s s right now. We just about most of our
- 1:18streams are at flood stage or above flood stage in the
- 1:21past 24, 48 hours. Um, so
- 1:24we have trash conditions right now.
- 1:27Um, I just look, this morning took a little bit of a
- 1:30little drive by the stream. Spring Creek is mess right
- 1:32now. Little J is back below flood stage.
- 1:35So it's, um, just gross, disgusting
- 1:38water. Um, so for the foreseeable future,
- 1:41I think that spring creek might be back into shape
- 1:44by late this weekend. And by late, I'm talking
- 1:47late Saturday, Sunday at the
- 1:49earliest. Um, little juniata
- 1:52pens. Um, is definitely going to be a little
- 1:54later than now. We're looking maybe early next week, Monday,
- 1:57Tuesday. Barring any more precipitation and
- 2:00the trees doing their job and soaking up some of this water,
- 2:03um, um, definitely going to be a few days till we can get back on the water.
- 2:06Um, um, we. Before all this rain, we were really starting to
- 2:09see some good bugs. Olives have been strong,
- 2:11granums have been good on spring. And, uh, um, who knows what
- 2:14this high water is going to do for the granums on the j and
- 2:17pens. Uh, um, but I think that hopefully by
- 2:19mid next week we should really start seeing these bugs
- 2:22just blow up. We are supposed to get cold the next couple days.
- 2:25But then we got a nice warm up spell coming, so
- 2:28catch me next week, if I can, an accurate idea
- 2:31of what's going on. But spring is here. We just got to get through this
- 2:34high water and cold event and, um, um, just to get us over the
- 2:37hump.
- 2:37Marvin Cash: Yeah, sounds like streamer fishing. Sunday,
- 2:40Monday, and then, you know, fingers crossed for dry
- 2:43fly activity on maybe Wednesday, Thursday, next week.
- 2:46George Costa: Yeah, we just got to see how everything comes back into shape. I don't
- 2:49see much precipitation, uh, uh, in the next couple of days, we
- 2:52got maybe some rain here and there. But, you know, barring
- 2:55anymore, you know, three, four inches of rain like we just
- 2:58got, um, um, you know, the rivers are going to take a couple days to get back into
- 3:00shape.
- 3:01Marvin Cash: God. Did.
- 3:02Anything, uh, cool going on in the shop you want to share with
- 3:05folks?
- 3:06George Costa: Um, uh, not particularly.
- 3:07Marvin Cash: We're loaded up.
- 3:08George Costa: We definitely got a lot of inventory here ready for spring. We've
- 3:11got a bunch of new fly patterns in, which are great. Um, um,
- 3:14good week to really get caught up and get ready. You know, get those flies
- 3:17tied for the, for the season here. You know, you can't fish. You might as well
- 3:20tie some bugs and come in and check out the shop. Um, um, there's a
- 3:23bunch of new, really cool new gear this year. Some really good new
- 3:26rods to check out. The new Scott rods are awesome. Session
- 3:28rods worth coming in and casting if you, if you haven't gotten a chance
- 3:31to check those out yet. Those have been casting well for us. Um,
- 3:34um, so, yeah, just, you know, loaded up, ready to go for the season.
- 3:37Marvin Cash: Yeah. And I know you were, uh, one of the few retailers actually got
- 3:40the hook up on the new Grundins too, right?
- 3:43Yep.
- 3:43George Costa: We got the new Grundins waiters in here. So we got all three
- 3:46models. You've got a low, um, medium and
- 3:49high end grundants. They're worth checking out too. Another great
- 3:52option in the, the waiter arena. We're excited to have that brand on
- 3:54board.
- 3:55Marvin Cash: Yeah. And I imagine to you, I think last time we spoke you
- 3:58were signing people up for learning to fly fish classes, right?
- 4:01George Costa: This is true as well. We've definitely got some good classes this spring.
- 4:04All of our tco shops have a lot of good beginners classes,
- 4:07more advanced classes with dry flies. We do a euro class
- 4:10up here in state college. Um, if you're new to the
- 4:13sport, you just listening to ol Marvin here on the podcast and
- 4:16you're like, maybe I'll try fly fishing. We got some really good
- 4:19beginners classes, um, throughout the spring and all of our locations.
- 4:22So check out the website under the education tab,
- 4:25and you can sign up for one of those classes to expand, uh,
- 4:28your horizon. We'll say yes.
- 4:30Marvin Cash: We call that being fly curious.
- 4:32George Costa: Oh, I like that very much.
- 4:34Marvin Cash: Well, you know, folks, we love questions on the articulate fly.
- 4:37You can email them to us, dm us on social media, whatever is
- 4:40easiest for you. And if we use your question, I will send
- 4:43you some articulate fly swag. And George will enter in a drawing
- 4:46for some cool stuff from the shop. Then the season.
- 4:48And, George, before I, uh, let you get back to it,
- 4:51you want to let folks know hours and all that kind of good stuff.
- 4:54George Costa: Absolutely. Absolutely. So we are here in State college.
- 4:57Tuesday, I'm sorry, Monday through Saturday, nine to
- 5:00six, and Sunday's nine to three. All of our other
- 5:03locations about the same hours. Uh, on the web
- 5:05tcoflyfishing.com.
- 5:07Marvin Cash: Uh, well, there you go. Well, listen, folks, when the water drops,
- 5:10get out there and catch a few tight lines, everybody. Tight
- 5:13lines. George, take it easy, Mark.
