- 0:52Speaker 4: on Let's Talk.
- 0:54Speaker 2: Hello, ladies and gentlemen.
- 0:55Speaker 1: Missus Carley with Let's Talk, and I have in the
- 0:58Speaker 1: building today. I got my co host Hollis Lewis and
- 1:01Speaker 1: the Queen, Miss Lisodi.
- 1:03Speaker 3: Hello.
- 1:04Speaker 1: So it's been an interesting it's been an interesting kind
- 1:09Speaker 1: of a week. I guess even in in into the
- 1:12Speaker 1: whole sports.
- 1:15Speaker 3: I thought you were going to say, because I wasn't
- 1:17Speaker 3: here last week.
- 1:18Speaker 2: No no, we did. We didn't miss you. Now, yes
- 1:22Speaker 2: we did.
- 1:24Speaker 3: Go ahead, go ahead, but.
- 1:27Speaker 1: Our hometown colleges, our major colleges. I'm going to make
- 1:35Speaker 1: the case, Hollis that where where where are we heading?
- 1:42Speaker 5: Do you?
- 1:44Speaker 1: Where do you think our future is going to be
- 1:46Speaker 1: with one or both of them, whichever one if you
- 1:49Speaker 1: want to come from about Marshall, I think Marshall.
- 1:53Speaker 2: I think they're going to get it together.
- 1:55Speaker 1: They played they went to uh Louisiana yet l U
- 2:02Speaker 1: l L and they played them tough. It was a
- 2:05Speaker 1: double overtime game that kind of you know, things just
- 2:07Speaker 1: fell apart. I think they just ran out of gas.
- 2:09Speaker 1: It was actually a phenomenal game. So I think they're
- 2:12Speaker 1: gonna be alright once they really get into the rhythm
- 2:15Speaker 1: and get into a conference play, yeah, which they already
- 2:18Speaker 1: are in. But I really think they'll be all right again.
- 2:21Speaker 1: They probably won't win the conference this year, but I
- 2:23Speaker 1: think they'll end up having a winning record at least
- 2:25Speaker 1: in conference.
- 2:26Speaker 2: Now.
- 2:27Speaker 1: WVU, on the other hand, it's just and I tell
- 2:31Speaker 1: people this all the time, regardless of who they're playing,
- 2:34Speaker 1: that Big twelve is just number one is just uneventful.
- 2:39Speaker 1: It's just not something that you get up for. It's
- 2:44Speaker 1: one of them things where I think more than strategy,
- 2:48Speaker 1: more than even players sometimes I think, you know, Rich Roder,
- 2:52Speaker 1: whoever is the coaster, their job is to manage the emotions.
- 2:56Speaker 1: How do we get up to play? Who do we play?
- 3:01Speaker 2: Utah?
- 3:01Speaker 3: Utah? Utah? Yeah?
- 3:03Speaker 2: Wow? Great?
- 3:04Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean no, but that's not a slight to Utah.
- 3:08Speaker 1: But they just don't have a history. It's Virginia Tech. Yeah,
- 3:12Speaker 1: and then next week you gotta go to you got
- 3:14Speaker 1: to go to b YU. So it's just like these
- 3:17Speaker 1: teams just aren't. It's connectivity as far as historical reference.
- 3:22Speaker 1: And and you know what, and Hollis, I'm glad you
- 3:25Speaker 1: said that because and I'll just jump to let's so
- 3:30Speaker 1: let's just say, going back to my days in Minnesota.
- 3:33Speaker 1: The thing that you knew you were going to play
- 3:36Speaker 1: the Packers. You know what I'm saying, Like you knew,
- 3:39Speaker 1: I'm just saying.
- 3:40Speaker 2: I'm just saying, you knew.
- 3:44Speaker 1: You're gonna you're gonna play the Packers, You're gonna play
- 3:47Speaker 1: the Bears.
- 3:48Speaker 2: You knew who you were gonna play.
- 3:50Speaker 1: And you and when you got on the field, whether
- 3:53Speaker 1: it be home or away, there was excitement of that
- 3:58Speaker 1: being a rivalry when you don't have that connection. To
- 4:02Speaker 1: be honest, I don't really know. It's just difficult. We
- 4:06Speaker 1: seen WVU this year when they had that emotion when
- 4:09Speaker 1: they're playing Pitt. We've seen what can happen when that
- 4:12Speaker 1: emotions matches that talent and that acumen that they have
- 4:15Speaker 1: on the field. But outside of that, these games are
- 4:18Speaker 1: just emotionalless. The fans aren't necessarily I mean, as a
- 4:22Speaker 1: WU fan, of course you're excited to see WVU play,
- 4:26Speaker 1: but far as you're not excited to see BYU, you're
- 4:28Speaker 1: not excited to see Utah, you're not excited to see
- 4:31Speaker 1: Ohio University.
- 4:32Speaker 2: It changes your hotel game.
- 4:36Speaker 3: I'm with you definitely on that part. It's way easier
- 4:39Speaker 3: to get up for a rival like Pitt than it
- 4:41Speaker 3: is the you know, when Utah rolls into town. But
- 4:44Speaker 3: in all fairness to the team, earlier in the week,
- 4:47Speaker 3: and I was telling you this Hollis before we came
- 4:49Speaker 3: on that rich Rod had said in a press conference
- 4:52Speaker 3: he had like eight offensive players questionable and he knew
- 4:55Speaker 3: his starting quarterback Nico Marcio was out. He has a
- 4:59Speaker 3: foot issue. He's in Colorado getting an evaluation, and who
- 5:03Speaker 3: knows when he'll be back. So basically, you have already
- 5:06Speaker 3: these guys that are questionable were already inexperienced, true, and
- 5:09Speaker 3: you're replacing inexperienced guys with more inexperienced and it's just
- 5:16Speaker 3: a you know, it's a terrible kind of a thing
- 5:20Speaker 3: they're going through up there right now. With or without
- 5:22Speaker 3: the rivalry. I don't even know if that would have
- 5:24Speaker 3: been pitt even. I don't know if they had enough
- 5:27Speaker 3: players on that field that were experienced enough to lead
- 5:30Speaker 3: them to a victory like they did that week.
- 5:32Speaker 1: Okay, so let me ask the two of you all.
- 5:36Speaker 1: Do you think that the fan base somebody may not
- 5:40Speaker 1: have known that until you said it, right and reason?
- 5:45Speaker 2: All right? Will the fan base be patient enough? Is that?
- 5:51Speaker 1: Is that enough for an excuse to say, okay, we'll
- 5:54Speaker 1: give you two or three more games to get some
- 5:58Speaker 1: guys back. Are the WANs that patient?
- 6:01Speaker 2: I mean, you gotta be patient?
- 6:03Speaker 1: I mean, come on, I mean, I know you're player,
- 6:05Speaker 1: I know you're in the fandom. I get it, you're
- 6:08Speaker 1: a fan of the team. You want to see your
- 6:10Speaker 1: team do well. But I mean, when you got eighty
- 6:12Speaker 1: plus players a whole new coaching staff. And like I said,
- 6:14Speaker 1: you're playing in the Big twelve, you never know what's
- 6:16Speaker 1: what you gotta give rich Rodd two three years. You
- 6:21Speaker 1: have to be I don't I don't think you cannot
- 6:23Speaker 1: not be patient. You have to be patient.
- 6:25Speaker 3: I think I totally agree with that statement as well.
- 6:27Speaker 3: But I think I think the issue with rich Rod
- 6:29Speaker 3: he was already a controversial hire the way he left
- 6:33Speaker 3: West Virginia years ago to go to Michigan. Those diehard
- 6:36Speaker 3: fans still have a bad, bad taste in they're a
- 6:38Speaker 3: bad you know, thought in their mind and taste in
- 6:40Speaker 3: their mouth about the way he left, you know. And
- 6:43Speaker 3: and there was already this divide in you know, the fans,
- 6:46Speaker 3: the people that wanted him back and the people that didn't.
- 6:49Speaker 3: It wasn't lukewarm. You either really wanted him back or
- 6:52Speaker 3: you didn't want him back at all. And so right now,
- 6:55Speaker 3: I mean fair or not? I mean I don't think
- 6:57Speaker 3: it's fair. But you know there's already talk about you know,
- 7:00Speaker 3: if he's not in the hot seat, he sure is
- 7:02Speaker 3: walking toward it. You know what.
- 7:03Speaker 2: But I guess to that.
- 7:04Speaker 1: Point, which is fair from the fans, And well, I'll
- 7:07Speaker 1: say to the fans.
- 7:08Speaker 2: Who else was gonna take this job?
- 7:10Speaker 1: Amen, like like in also right, the person outside of
- 7:14Speaker 1: rich Rod, outside of maybe a WVU alump that was
- 7:18Speaker 1: gonna take this job, was gonna for the sole purpose
- 7:21Speaker 1: to take the job, build it up, win the conference,
- 7:24Speaker 1: and go get paid at another spot. Rich Rod is
- 7:26Speaker 1: the only I ain't gonna say, legit higher, but he's
- 7:29Speaker 1: the only name quote unquote higher. I'm not yeah, it's
- 7:32Speaker 1: gonna take this job. And probably he ain't going. This
- 7:35Speaker 1: is rich Rod's probably last stop, right, He's committed to
- 7:38Speaker 1: building this up. So I say from that, you have
- 7:41Speaker 1: to give him some time. And I and that's a
- 7:43Speaker 1: great that's a great point.
- 7:46Speaker 2: And I'll add.
- 7:47Speaker 1: To it to the fact that I'm not sure anybody
- 7:52Speaker 1: was really overly interested in taking that job because they
- 7:55Speaker 1: knew it.
- 7:56Speaker 2: May take a while.
- 7:58Speaker 1: If you give rich Rod the time and if you're patient, okay,
- 8:05Speaker 1: I think there's a turnaround.
- 8:06Speaker 2: But here's here's here's what bothers me, or here's my
- 8:10Speaker 2: question or concern.
- 8:13Speaker 3: Every time.
- 8:14Speaker 1: Let's say, Hollisher, you know I bring you in from anywhere.
- 8:18Speaker 1: You know obviously you're gonna have been playing somewhere. I'm
- 8:21Speaker 1: bringing you in.
- 8:22Speaker 2: You come in, I start you, and you place. You
- 8:26Speaker 2: just play? Well, how am I keeping? You see? Because
- 8:32Speaker 2: the problem with rebuilding.
- 8:34Speaker 3: It's, you.
- 8:39Speaker 2: Know, you still have to keep.
- 8:43Speaker 1: The players who are shining, and the players that are
- 8:45Speaker 1: shining aren't. Are they loyal enough to wu to say
- 8:50Speaker 1: I don't care, I'm gonna stay here all the way
- 8:53Speaker 1: through my tenure.
- 8:54Speaker 2: Probably, I mean probably not.
- 8:55Speaker 1: But again, I think that's another problem that's perpetuated because
- 8:59Speaker 1: I mean not only just you know the state of
- 9:01Speaker 1: college athletics, but I think that's a problem because we're
- 9:04Speaker 1: not in the A c C. I really think until
- 9:07Speaker 1: we get into a c C, this is w VU
- 9:11Speaker 1: football and people don't have to get used. There's gonna
- 9:12Speaker 1: be some good years, it's gonna be some bad years.
- 9:14Speaker 1: It's gonna just be I think across the board is
- 9:17Speaker 1: gonna be mediocre. We have to get into the ACC
- 9:19Speaker 1: because to your point, if I'm a player, and if
- 9:22Speaker 1: I'm you know, doing my thing, and if i'm you know,
- 9:25Speaker 1: all conference, all American and all that stuff, why would
- 9:28Speaker 1: I play. I'm gonna go to the A c C.
- 9:31Speaker 1: I want to go to the to the SEC. You know,
- 9:34Speaker 1: this is not an attractive conference. From the standpoint the
- 9:38Speaker 1: wv U, we have to get to the ACC. And
- 9:40Speaker 1: until we get into the ACC, I think we're gonna
- 9:42Speaker 1: just have.
- 9:42Speaker 3: These potential Do you think that's a reality? Do you
- 9:44Speaker 3: think that there's a chance at any time? I mean,
- 9:46Speaker 3: didn't they try that in the past The dissolved and
- 9:50Speaker 3: they couldn't.
- 9:50Speaker 1: Get any But I think, you know, I think it could.
- 9:53Speaker 1: Let me just say this, I don't know far as
- 9:56Speaker 1: like you know, prognice. I can't even say that word
- 9:59Speaker 1: truck trying to figure out the future. But what I
- 10:01Speaker 1: will say is that our athletic director and our president
- 10:04Speaker 1: and our coaches, they have to be vibal for They
- 10:06Speaker 1: got to be thinking about it.
- 10:07Speaker 2: How do we do this?
- 10:08Speaker 1: Somebody's got to be strategically planning for the next couple
- 10:11Speaker 1: of years and say, how do we get into the ACC?
- 10:13Speaker 1: Because I think that's going to just again just the
- 10:17Speaker 1: energy around w It's going to get like it was
- 10:19Speaker 1: big in the Big East. You know Big East years
- 10:22Speaker 1: were awesome. Yea, every every every week in conference place. Maryland,
- 10:27Speaker 1: it's pitt it's v Tech, it's North Carolina. You had Miami,
- 10:30Speaker 1: you had those teams that you just knew in those
- 10:32Speaker 1: games that you had to watch.
- 10:34Speaker 2: Are you saying? Okay? And I and I think what
- 10:36Speaker 2: you're saying is some of the teams that were playing.
- 10:39Speaker 1: Or I shouldn't say we because I'm not a w view,
- 10:41Speaker 1: but the West Virginia's playing, we don't know about who
- 10:47Speaker 1: they are, not necessarily who they are, but they're not
- 10:52Speaker 1: They're not anybody that we really want to beat or
- 10:55Speaker 1: want that.
- 10:56Speaker 2: We think.
- 10:57Speaker 3: It's travel too, don't you. I mean they yeah, get
- 11:01Speaker 3: from point b is ridiculous.
- 11:02Speaker 1: I mean, like you said, every week weekend we just
- 11:05Speaker 1: play Utah got beat really bad. Now you gotta fly
- 11:09Speaker 1: all the way to Utah. Yeah, but now you gotta
- 11:13Speaker 1: fly all the way to b yu. And the thing
- 11:15Speaker 1: about it is if you're in Morgantown, that means you're
- 11:19Speaker 1: driving forty five minutes an hour to Pittsburgh to get
- 11:22Speaker 1: on the get on the plane. So it's travel on
- 11:24Speaker 1: type of travel, you know, going halfway across the country.
- 11:27Speaker 1: These ain't like road games where you're just going to
- 11:28Speaker 1: take you can take the bus and and different, and
- 11:32Speaker 1: you don't you're not supposed to quote lose to Utah,
- 11:35Speaker 1: not because Utah. No, I'm not saying I don't. I
- 11:41Speaker 1: don't mean because they're not that, but because in my
- 11:45Speaker 1: head the way I see this, I'm thinking if I'm
- 11:47Speaker 1: a WVU fan, and I don't necessarily really I'm not
- 11:50Speaker 1: paying attention to Utah who they play, but all of
- 11:53Speaker 1: a sudden, we got them on our.
- 11:54Speaker 2: Schedule right when you're in conference.
- 11:56Speaker 1: Yeah, but I'm saying, so now we're playing them, I
- 11:59Speaker 1: don't think we're supposed to lose to them.
- 12:02Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying. You know what I'm saying.
- 12:03Speaker 1: I don't know if my thoughts of a WVU football
- 12:08Speaker 1: fans they I think that they have always had a
- 12:14Speaker 1: higher expectation, whether or not the team could meet it
- 12:17Speaker 1: or not, they've always had a higher expectation.
- 12:21Speaker 2: And the whole Penn State.
- 12:23Speaker 1: Games all those kind of things, they believed back in
- 12:26Speaker 1: the day that they should win those games. And no,
- 12:29Speaker 1: and again me just being me, not paying any attention
- 12:33Speaker 1: to Utah, thinking that they would lose to Utah, I
- 12:37Speaker 1: would say, no, they wouldn't do that.
- 12:38Speaker 2: They wouldn't lose to them. That should be a game
- 12:41Speaker 2: that they should win.
- 12:43Speaker 3: But all I know is we're they are zeroing to
- 12:46Speaker 3: in Big Twelve play, and these two games they have
- 12:49Speaker 3: not even been in They have not for a second
- 12:52Speaker 3: been part of the game. And that's the scary part
- 12:54Speaker 3: because even though the Big twelve is not a big
- 12:57Speaker 3: a good fit for WVU in my opinion like yours,
- 13:00Speaker 3: but it's a tough, tough conference. I mean, it's there's
- 13:04Speaker 3: no Kekewalks in it, and I just don't know. Unless
- 13:07Speaker 3: this team gets healthier as the year goes on, it's
- 13:11Speaker 3: gonna be tough for them to win some games.
- 13:13Speaker 1: Yeah, And just looking at that, I mean because we
- 13:15Speaker 1: talk a lot, you know, in IL, we talk a
- 13:18Speaker 1: lot about transfer portals, but just looking at college football overall,
- 13:22Speaker 1: outside of WVU, there's been a lot of great parody,
- 13:25Speaker 1: just you know, looking at the scores, looking at who's winning,
- 13:28Speaker 1: looking who's losing. So I think that, you know, if
- 13:33Speaker 1: we can survive this year without getting too banged up,
- 13:36Speaker 1: keep some of that core pieces and then get some
- 13:38Speaker 1: other transfers coming in, I think WU has a shot
- 13:41Speaker 1: to turn it around.
- 13:42Speaker 2: But it's not gonna be this year. Are you are?
- 13:44Speaker 1: You can you keep the best player, let's say the
- 13:48Speaker 1: top eight. I think you'll keep some I mean, like
- 13:52Speaker 1: I said, you'll keep some guys. Some guys are gonna go,
- 13:55Speaker 1: some guys are gonna stay, but you have to Again,
- 13:59Speaker 1: it's one of them situations where you have to recruit
- 14:02Speaker 1: them guys. You got to be almost recruiting them now.
- 14:04Speaker 1: And these are guys within your locker room. You got
- 14:06Speaker 1: to be recruiting them, guys, your core pieces to figure
- 14:08Speaker 1: out who that core is, like you said, Lisa said,
- 14:11Speaker 1: throughout this, you know this, next, you know, five or
- 14:13Speaker 1: six ball games, and then you got to be looking
- 14:15Speaker 1: out to who possibly can get in the next couple
- 14:18Speaker 1: of months.
- 14:19Speaker 3: And I found this interesting and maybe Matt can help
- 14:23Speaker 3: me out with this one and our producer. But there
- 14:26Speaker 3: was a press conference earlier. This maybe was this week
- 14:28Speaker 3: or last week. Might have been last week or the
- 14:31Speaker 3: week before. It's what I meant, not this week. It's Monday,
- 14:33Speaker 3: but anyway, it was about his recruiting tactics. He wants
- 14:38Speaker 3: to focus on high school players. Somewhere I read that,
- 14:43Speaker 3: and that he wants to develop those players so that
- 14:47Speaker 3: they become, you know, a part of WU lore, like
- 14:51Speaker 3: that would be their first and last stop. I'm not
- 14:54Speaker 3: sure if that's a good strategy in his mind, he
- 14:56Speaker 3: feels like, you know, it's the way that not total
- 15:00Speaker 3: high school kids, but he wants to focus on them.
- 15:03Speaker 1: I actually think that's not a bad idea. Again, it's
- 15:05Speaker 1: one of them situations in which does he will he
- 15:09Speaker 1: have the time to do that. I really don't think
- 15:12Speaker 1: it's a bad idea because if you can get you
- 15:14Speaker 1: twenty thirty high school guys that are legit dudes, three four,
- 15:18Speaker 1: five star guys, and you can develop them over two, three,
- 15:22Speaker 1: maybe four year period, that sets us up in the
- 15:25Speaker 1: future to be pretty good.
- 15:26Speaker 2: So I think, and again, and you also have to
- 15:29Speaker 2: look at it from.
- 15:29Speaker 1: The financial standpoint, because to your point, we're not Georgia,
- 15:32Speaker 1: We're not Alabama. We're not going to have the resources
- 15:35Speaker 1: to cut five and you know, six and seven figure
- 15:39Speaker 1: deals just throughout our roster. So high school because from
- 15:42Speaker 1: a financial standpoint, maybe the way to go and.
- 15:45Speaker 3: That philosophy ahead the court that you're talking about.
- 15:48Speaker 6: What he was saying there was because they had such
- 15:50Speaker 6: a late start on recruitment.
- 15:52Speaker 3: Okay, they didn't get a chance to really get a
- 15:53Speaker 3: lot of high school so he wants to start focusing.
- 15:56Speaker 6: He said, next year we'll be when they'll have more
- 15:58Speaker 6: high school players in hopefully.
- 16:00Speaker 2: Yeah, but now will they thank you.
- 16:04Speaker 1: Will he be able to entice them to come to
- 16:08Speaker 1: WU if they don't, let's say they don't have a
- 16:11Speaker 1: great season.
- 16:12Speaker 2: Can he entice them?
- 16:13Speaker 1: Is he's gonna have to entice them with the N
- 16:15Speaker 1: I L Or can he entice them with the school
- 16:18Speaker 1: and the.
- 16:19Speaker 3: Maybe with ties like maybe focused on players that their
- 16:22Speaker 3: their families have ties to the school. That might be
- 16:24Speaker 3: you know, a route that might work for him.
- 16:27Speaker 2: See.
- 16:27Speaker 3: Money definitely always works. It just depends on how much
- 16:30Speaker 3: he has of it.
- 16:31Speaker 1: See, and that's what See, that's what that's what scares
- 16:33Speaker 1: me about Marshall and WVU in the whole recruiting process
- 16:38Speaker 1: and or the getting other players that are that are
- 16:42Speaker 1: playing now. So you're not getting high schools because high
- 16:46Speaker 1: school recruiting is a challenge now because you don't have
- 16:49Speaker 1: time to wait on that guy to develop.
- 16:54Speaker 3: But if you but that tells me he's committed, Like
- 16:57Speaker 3: he's not going anywhere. If he's thinking about reading high
- 17:00Speaker 3: school kids like you know, he's not like trying to
- 17:02Speaker 3: get portal kids and JUCO kids. He wants to develop,
- 17:06Speaker 3: And that tells me, you know, he's like you said, Hollis,
- 17:09Speaker 3: he's there for the long haul. He's not going to
- 17:11Speaker 3: I think he's for the long haul. But if the
- 17:13Speaker 3: fans will keep him for the fan base.
- 17:16Speaker 2: Keep them.
- 17:17Speaker 1: Man, they don't got a choice. I just don't see
- 17:20Speaker 1: that you have a choice. I mean, you not to
- 17:22Speaker 1: say they aren't good coaches out there, and I'm sure
- 17:25Speaker 1: there are people come in and make some things happen.
- 17:28Speaker 1: But for the long haul, if you're looking for a
- 17:30Speaker 1: guy to be here the next to five ten years,
- 17:32Speaker 1: I mean, I don't know who else would. He wants
- 17:35Speaker 1: to retire here. He wants to be hugging, he wants
- 17:37Speaker 1: to be kneeling, he wants to This is the final stop.
- 17:40Speaker 2: This is it.
- 17:40Speaker 1: So he's in a position where he's back against the wall.
- 17:43Speaker 1: He has to make this work. This is the legacy.
- 17:45Speaker 3: And do you think that's why Marshall wanted Tony Gibson
- 17:48Speaker 3: is because of those I think. I mean, that's the
- 17:51Speaker 3: only thing that we have is you know, as far
- 17:53Speaker 3: as we don't have the money to pay coaches like
- 17:55Speaker 3: other schools, you want somebody that has that might loyalty.
- 17:59Speaker 1: Yeah, who might be stuck on the loyalty and the
- 18:03Speaker 1: desire to change, to to change the image of the
- 18:06Speaker 1: team to what they want it to be over money
- 18:11Speaker 1: because they don't necessarily quote need the money.
- 18:13Speaker 2: You know.
- 18:14Speaker 1: Now, they may want it, but they don't necessarily quote
- 18:17Speaker 1: need it. That's not their goal. Their goal is to
- 18:19Speaker 1: define a school that they love. These are legacy dudes. Yeah,
- 18:24Speaker 1: both of these legacy guy. They want to turn this around.
- 18:28Speaker 1: They want to win championships. They want to have the
- 18:30Speaker 1: lore of those universities. And I think, you know, West
- 18:33Speaker 1: Virginia schools, that's that's what we have. And we got
- 18:36Speaker 1: to make that work because, like I said, we're not
- 18:38Speaker 1: gonna be able to pay you what other coaches are
- 18:39Speaker 1: getting paid. And I would say, I would say to
- 18:42Speaker 1: the fan base, you have to understand that. You know,
- 18:50Speaker 1: for sure, you because the reality of this is you
- 18:54Speaker 1: have West Virginia coaches coaching West Virginia team and.
- 18:58Speaker 2: Trying to make them the best that they can be.
- 19:02Speaker 1: Every kid on that team wants they want that kid
- 19:07Speaker 1: to be successful some form of fashion, academically, athletically, both
- 19:12Speaker 1: however they can make them successful.
- 19:14Speaker 3: Sure, well, they're both two and three. Both teams are
- 19:17Speaker 3: two and three, So I don't know how that bodes.
- 19:19Speaker 3: I mean it is, I mean, I know it's both
- 19:21Speaker 3: their first years in the in the positions that they're
- 19:23Speaker 3: you know, each respectively in. But like you said, most
- 19:26Speaker 3: fan base, the fan base doesn't understand the logistics of
- 19:30Speaker 3: what we're talking about. The layman, the layman, you know,
- 19:33Speaker 3: just a normal day, front of the day fan.
- 19:36Speaker 2: I think the diehard fan doesn't get it.
- 19:41Speaker 3: I need to get it.
- 19:42Speaker 2: You would like to think.
- 19:43Speaker 1: That the diehard would would get it because they understand
- 19:47Speaker 1: the whole structure and this whole because this was a
- 19:50Speaker 1: big turnover. I mean, you know what I'm saying, This
- 19:53Speaker 1: was a huge turnover for both of these coaches and
- 19:56Speaker 1: for both of these teams.
- 19:57Speaker 3: They're starting over every basically everywhere.
- 20:00Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, I don't know.
- 20:01Speaker 1: I think the WV you die fair, I think they
- 20:04Speaker 1: have to get it, man, because we can say the
- 20:06Speaker 1: opposite for Marshall, because Marshall's had recent success, right they
- 20:09Speaker 1: won the conference, They've they've kind of always been in
- 20:12Speaker 1: the groove under the former head coaches, huffing his previous coach,
- 20:17Speaker 1: so I think they could probably to that point. And
- 20:20Speaker 1: you have been a little bit impatient because of that.
- 20:22Speaker 1: But I mean, you may not, like Rich Rodin, may
- 20:25Speaker 1: be emotional because you don't like kind of previously what.
- 20:28Speaker 2: Happened, but you ain't got no choice. This is what
- 20:31Speaker 2: it is.
- 20:34Speaker 3: I'll be shocked. I don't think. I mean, what do
- 20:36Speaker 3: you guys think. I don't think they're going bowling this year?
- 20:39Speaker 2: I mean they hand Bowl games. Yeah, so you don't
- 20:42Speaker 2: think they won six games.
- 20:43Speaker 3: I don't know. I don't know, and.
- 20:46Speaker 2: I know that you can get I mean.
- 20:48Speaker 3: I'm telling you, I really feel like if you know
- 20:52Speaker 3: some of these players are out indefinitely and you've got
- 20:55Speaker 3: these guys that are even more, like I said, inexperience, I.
- 20:58Speaker 1: Don't even wasn't even a thought to even ask that question.
- 21:04Speaker 2: I don't, I don't.
- 21:05Speaker 1: I just I just don't see that, Like I just
- 21:08Speaker 1: from from from my view of where and both teams
- 21:14Speaker 1: where both teams are like, I don't see, I don't see.
- 21:19Speaker 2: I don't I'm not thinking bowl games.
- 21:21Speaker 1: I think I'm thinking, can can you get a winning streak?
- 21:25Speaker 3: Like can you well, I mean that's what I mean.
- 21:27Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, I mean before before bowl, before bowls.
- 21:34Speaker 3: You have to win six games to be Bowl eligible, right,
- 21:37Speaker 3: and you can have a losing season, yes, some of
- 21:40Speaker 3: the games.
- 21:41Speaker 1: It's just the bowl games just don't have the luster.
- 21:43Speaker 1: So it's like, even if you like the thing is like,
- 21:46Speaker 1: do you even accept it? I mean maybe you accept
- 21:48Speaker 1: it because you get the extra practice you get like
- 21:50Speaker 1: basically depend on where your bowl games, you might get
- 21:52Speaker 1: like a three four weeks extra practice. Think do you
- 21:55Speaker 1: even accept it? But are the fans going to go?
- 21:58Speaker 2: Though?
- 21:59Speaker 3: Depends on the ball, depends on the bu if it's drivable.
- 22:02Speaker 3: I'm I'm not.
- 22:03Speaker 1: Sure because my memory is horrible, but I think that
- 22:06Speaker 1: we were talking about bowl games once before, and we
- 22:09Speaker 1: were talking about it being like a negative kind of
- 22:12Speaker 1: a negative thing because of these.
- 22:14Speaker 3: Teams in the past. Whenever the bowl game was the
- 22:17Speaker 3: big you know, that was.
- 22:18Speaker 1: That was we got bowl games where people success.
- 22:23Speaker 2: Or maybe even under that's not really that really a
- 22:27Speaker 2: bowl game.
- 22:29Speaker 1: I don't see that as a bowl game, no matter
- 22:31Speaker 1: what name you put on it, no matter what how
- 22:35Speaker 1: you how.
- 22:37Speaker 3: You Okay, Okay, So I understand, Okay, I went, I
- 22:41Speaker 3: went down to this dark path, and you guys are
- 22:43Speaker 3: making me pay for it. But honestly, I know it's
- 22:47Speaker 3: going to take time. But do you ever ever, I
- 22:49Speaker 3: don't care who's at Marshall, who's at w w v U.
- 22:52Speaker 3: Do you ever see these two teams ever getting a
- 22:55Speaker 3: shot at the National Football the Collegiate Championship in the
- 22:59Speaker 3: play off? Do you ever see them with with the
- 23:02Speaker 3: way the system is designed within ile, with a transfer portal,
- 23:07Speaker 3: with money, no revenue sharing.
- 23:11Speaker 2: I definitely see w v U. I can see them.
- 23:14Speaker 2: I can see them.
- 23:15Speaker 1: Because in the playoffs, I could see w Marshall be
- 23:21Speaker 1: a lot difficult just because they're you know, they're not
- 23:24Speaker 1: a non powerful right, But I can definitely see w
- 23:28Speaker 1: v U. Like I said, man, you get ten players
- 23:31Speaker 1: that can that can go that turns this around. I
- 23:35Speaker 1: mean far as this year is concerned, it's just w
- 23:38Speaker 1: v has to go to to b y U. They
- 23:42Speaker 1: have to go to U c F. That's a winnable game.
- 23:46Speaker 1: They home at TCU, that's gonna be tough. They have
- 23:49Speaker 1: to go to Houston, that's gonna be tough. Colorado's coming in.
- 23:53Speaker 1: Colorado's not great, that's a winnable game. Then you have
- 23:56Speaker 1: to go to Arizona. That's tough. And then Texas Tech
- 24:01Speaker 1: come to U Texas. Texas the top fifteen team, So
- 24:05Speaker 1: it's gonna be travel.
- 24:11Speaker 2: I mean, we're talking about four more games. I don't know.
- 24:17Speaker 2: I don't see. I don't see.
- 24:22Speaker 1: Is it okay to go to a bowl game, a
- 24:24Speaker 1: lower tier bowl game, win it or lose it? Does
- 24:28Speaker 1: does does it matter? I mean, I mean you celebrate that,
- 24:34Speaker 1: celebrate okay.
- 24:35Speaker 3: But the thing.
- 24:37Speaker 1: Because I don't But the thing is that as a coach,
- 24:40Speaker 1: and here's a here's a here's the other issue with
- 24:42Speaker 1: that because number one, the thinking previously was that if
- 24:47Speaker 1: we go to the bowl game, even though we may
- 24:49Speaker 1: not be in a national championship picture, then we're gonna
- 24:51Speaker 1: get those extra practices in, so you get two to
- 24:54Speaker 1: maybe four weeks extra practice. Now here's the caveat with
- 24:58Speaker 1: that now, because now players aren't they're inter the transfer
- 25:02Speaker 1: port they're not playing in that bowl down. So if
- 25:05Speaker 1: you know that you're going to some some lower level
- 25:07Speaker 1: bowl game, a lot I ain't gonna say most, but
- 25:09Speaker 1: a lot of players sort of the the trend is
- 25:12Speaker 1: to say, hey man, I'm not playing that bowl game.
- 25:14Speaker 1: I'm gonna enter the transfer porter portal or enter the
- 25:17Speaker 1: league and I'm just not gonna feel full with it.
- 25:19Speaker 1: So to your point, depending on the number of players
- 25:23Speaker 1: that choose the leap, it may not be worth it.
- 25:25Speaker 1: So that's also another consideration that you have to consider.
- 25:29Speaker 1: And my thing is now, I say, get rid of
- 25:32Speaker 1: the boat games.
- 25:34Speaker 2: If it's not playoffs or conference champions I would be good.
- 25:38Speaker 2: Get rid of the bow games.
- 25:39Speaker 1: I never would have said that or thought that, probably
- 25:42Speaker 1: because I'm thinking that that's impossible that it would happen.
- 25:44Speaker 2: But it does make sense.
- 25:46Speaker 1: Yeah, because you're the players aren't playing because they're entering
- 25:49Speaker 1: the transfer portal. So it's like I'm not gonna get
- 25:51Speaker 1: risk getting hurt for a game that doesn't matter. I mean,
- 25:54Speaker 1: you got some some kids, like some third and second
- 25:56Speaker 1: string players that went to the playoffs last year. Their
- 25:59Speaker 1: teams into the playoffs and they chose to sit out
- 26:02Speaker 1: because they entered the transfer portal. So I'm saying get
- 26:05Speaker 1: rid of the Bowl games.
- 26:05Speaker 3: They do not think they would do that though, I
- 26:07Speaker 3: mean the money.
- 26:08Speaker 1: Money, but it don't matter that because but I'm looking at.
- 26:11Speaker 3: It's a sad ending to an era sad.
- 26:14Speaker 1: But if I'm but if I'm a company, I'm looking
- 26:16Speaker 1: at the r O. I dang, I'm dishing out all
- 26:19Speaker 1: this cash for this game. What am I getting back there?
- 26:22Speaker 3: The TV? Like a lot of people still watch Bowl games.
- 26:25Speaker 3: We watch I mean December, when when you know, bold
- 26:27Speaker 3: season starts. We watched bowl games all all of the
- 26:30Speaker 3: whole month.
- 26:30Speaker 2: I could say I didn't as much as I used
- 26:32Speaker 2: to because most of it.
- 26:37Speaker 3: Seems like Marshall would never get to do any I mean,
- 26:39Speaker 3: they're not going to go these these smaller schools. They
- 26:42Speaker 3: don't get to go to the National champion the playoffs,
- 26:44Speaker 3: so why not have bowl games for them to enjoy it?
- 26:46Speaker 2: Well? And I understand last year was.
- 26:48Speaker 3: An anomaly with with the health leaving and taking the team.
- 26:51Speaker 2: I think that's going to be normal.
- 26:55Speaker 3: I meant because they won the conference championship. Otherwise that
- 26:59Speaker 3: they would have if he hadn't a left right after
- 27:01Speaker 3: that with the whole team and they hadn't won the
- 27:03Speaker 3: conference championship and they just gone to a lesser bowl,
- 27:06Speaker 3: Marshall fans would have been excited.
- 27:08Speaker 6: What about I don't know, what about if in the
- 27:11Speaker 6: age of n I L you go play the bowl
- 27:13Speaker 6: game and the players win a pot of money, the players,
- 27:19Speaker 6: if you team, you get money.
- 27:21Speaker 2: Why not? Thing? Though?
- 27:23Speaker 1: Here's the thing with that, though that makes sense, and
- 27:25Speaker 1: that's probably a good idea, but you but you still
- 27:27Speaker 1: got the transfer a portal problem because now I have
- 27:30Speaker 1: to I have to go in December in order to
- 27:33Speaker 1: see where I'm going so I can get signed up
- 27:34Speaker 1: for my classes in Jauer.
- 27:36Speaker 2: And the other thing is to Tommy think.
- 27:40Speaker 1: To that is too, is the school is getting that
- 27:44Speaker 1: money right.
- 27:45Speaker 3: You know, they're not gonna get that.
- 27:46Speaker 1: They're gonna they're not gonna want to give that.
- 27:50Speaker 3: But I like that. You like that idea.
- 27:52Speaker 1: I would like that idea too, you know, and because
- 27:55Speaker 1: at that point, really, honestly, even if even if you
- 28:01Speaker 1: weren't getting your I on money, you're receiving money through
- 28:05Speaker 1: winning a bowl game or even participating.
- 28:08Speaker 2: I mean, I like the idea.
- 28:09Speaker 1: I just think you still have a timing issue because
- 28:11Speaker 1: the problem is that again, if I'm trying to transfer
- 28:14Speaker 1: to another school, I have to start that process in
- 28:17Speaker 1: December so I can be enrolled by January. It may
- 28:20Speaker 1: take a month for me to find an home. And
- 28:21Speaker 1: so I think they need to push that process back
- 28:24Speaker 1: and they need to let these kids roll in February.
- 28:27Speaker 1: You'll be alrighty not going to class for a couple weeks,
- 28:29Speaker 1: You've be fine.
- 28:32Speaker 3: Yeah. See, I understand technology.
- 28:35Speaker 2: I agree with that.
- 28:36Speaker 1: But see, I'm thinking and I'm trying to think this
- 28:39Speaker 1: through as a as a player who's thinking I'm gonna leave. Okay,
- 28:43Speaker 1: so after our last game, whether it's a it's a
- 28:46Speaker 1: bowl game, whatever it's going to be, I'm I'm ready.
- 28:49Speaker 1: I'm ready to jump into portal. I'm ready to try
- 28:51Speaker 1: to commit to another place. I'm not playing anyway, right,
- 28:57Speaker 1: I'm not gonna play in any any game after our
- 29:01Speaker 1: last season game. If we're not quote already Bowl eligible
- 29:06Speaker 1: or in a major bowl place or championship, I'm out.
- 29:13Speaker 2: Yeah, I just don't.
- 29:14Speaker 1: I guess my thing is like, if you're a starter
- 29:17Speaker 1: and you've been starting, you've been playing the whole season,
- 29:19Speaker 1: you got some tape, you had a pretty good year,
- 29:21Speaker 1: and you decide, you know, I want to go to
- 29:23Speaker 1: the next school. I just don't know what playing in
- 29:25Speaker 1: the bowl does for you anymore. Just yeah, it just
- 29:28Speaker 1: doesn't if you're not going to the playoffs. Yeah, I mean,
- 29:32Speaker 1: again to your point least, I did watch some of
- 29:34Speaker 1: the bowls and it was fun to watch like those
- 29:36Speaker 1: third string guys to get a shot. But at the
- 29:39Speaker 1: same time, that's not like the highest quality of football.
- 29:42Speaker 1: And with the playoffs, what is it twelve teams? Now, Yes,
- 29:45Speaker 1: that's all the matter, Like I'm trying to see that,
- 29:48Speaker 1: I ain't trying to see nothing else. So I would
- 29:50Speaker 1: actually say, if you're going to do a top twenty five,
- 29:53Speaker 1: if we got a top twenty five, do a twenty
- 29:57Speaker 1: five team playoff.
- 29:58Speaker 2: That's what we got. They ate everything else.
- 30:01Speaker 1: And same thing for non power forward non power forwards
- 30:05Speaker 1: have their own playoffs. I like that, you know what
- 30:07Speaker 1: I'm saying, And they should. Now they can play up
- 30:09Speaker 1: if they if they make it. So those teams can
- 30:11Speaker 1: play up. You know, if you're if you're a TOASA,
- 30:14Speaker 1: if you're a Marshall, if you're a Boise State, you
- 30:16Speaker 1: can play up into the Power five playoff. But you
- 30:18Speaker 1: can also if you don't make it, you play the
- 30:19Speaker 1: Power four non Power four playoffs. So I say, you
- 30:23Speaker 1: have two sets of playoffs, just like you have Division two, three, whatever,
- 30:26Speaker 1: and just play it that way. So that way we
- 30:27Speaker 1: just eliminate and you can like first round toast he
- 30:30Speaker 1: does whatever bowl.
- 30:32Speaker 2: You know, the playoff games to the playoff games.
- 30:36Speaker 3: Yeah, so I just do it like that. It's just
- 30:39Speaker 3: a big, big mess, that's what I say. It's a
- 30:42Speaker 3: big mess. And why about money games? Do we have
- 30:46Speaker 3: time to talk about that. While we're talking about money
- 30:48Speaker 3: and games, we'll just put it together.
- 30:50Speaker 1: Yeah, well, let's take a quick break, okay, and then
- 30:52Speaker 1: we'll come right back.

- 32:22Speaker 4: the conversation.
- 32:23Speaker 2: All right, ladies and gentlemen, we're back.
- 32:25Speaker 1: And the queen over there has got some information or
- 32:30Speaker 1: Christen for us.
- 32:31Speaker 3: Now, well, well, we've talked a little bit on the
- 32:35Speaker 3: show before about money games, and so I was kind
- 32:38Speaker 3: of curious to see it's the time of year where
- 32:41Speaker 3: they start to release, you know, how much money some
- 32:44Speaker 3: of these smaller teams were paid to go and play,
- 32:47Speaker 3: you know, as a sacrificial Lamb to the larger schools,
- 32:51Speaker 3: and so basically I looked up what money game means
- 32:55Speaker 3: because I know some people out there were like, what's
- 32:56Speaker 3: a money game? Well, games where a smaller program is
- 32:59Speaker 3: pays a significicking amount of money to play a larger
- 33:02Speaker 3: established program. That's basically what it means, because you know,
- 33:05Speaker 3: some people may not realize that, but basically some of
- 33:07Speaker 3: the bigger games and what they were paid this this
- 33:10Speaker 3: one's this was really like eye opening to me. Grambling
- 33:14Speaker 3: State went to Ohio State lost seventy to nothing, but
- 33:17Speaker 3: were paid one million dollars for one game. Charlotte visited Georgia,
- 33:23Speaker 3: and so did Marshall. Okay, Charlotte was paid one point
- 33:26Speaker 3: nine million for their game. Marshall was paid one point
- 33:29Speaker 3: seven that's the kind of money George's plan with. Okay,
- 33:32Speaker 3: and then of course Central Michigan was paid one point
- 33:34Speaker 3: five to go visit ann Arborn. You know, be Michigan.
- 33:38Speaker 3: It's a little toy for a while. But what are
- 33:41Speaker 3: your thoughts on this? I mean, basically, the money that
- 33:44Speaker 3: some of these schools got, that's almost their whole budget.
- 33:47Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm going to make the case that it's it's
- 33:51Speaker 1: well above their budget possibly, and it's been it's truly
- 33:57Speaker 1: beneficial for them. But now I think they're gonna run
- 34:03Speaker 1: short out of that because of inn I L.
- 34:07Speaker 2: George is not running short.
- 34:08Speaker 1: No, no, well.
- 34:12Speaker 3: Afford that.
- 34:14Speaker 2: Not for the football program.
- 34:16Speaker 1: Well see, I'm thinking in my thoughts, and I might
- 34:19Speaker 1: and I might be wrong, but like my question, my
- 34:22Speaker 1: question then is you're gonna pay Let's say you're gonna
- 34:27Speaker 1: pay Marshall a million dollars is to come and play, right,
- 34:35Speaker 1: and then you're gonna pay then you're in I L budget. Well,
- 34:40Speaker 1: it's it's different now because I think those are different
- 34:45Speaker 1: parts of money. I agree, I agree, But how much?
- 34:50Speaker 1: How I mean how much resources? Do you think some
- 34:54Speaker 1: of these places limitless? Absolutely less? They have all the
- 34:58Speaker 1: money in like a small country. Alabama football has Georgia.
- 35:05Speaker 1: They're never running out of them. At Tennessee, Alabama and USC,
- 35:08Speaker 1: they're not running out of money. Here's the thing that
- 35:11Speaker 1: what I think people don't realize, even like to that
- 35:14Speaker 1: point where Marshall plays Georgia for one and they get
- 35:17Speaker 1: paid one point seven, what we have to analyze is
- 35:20Speaker 1: the cost of going to Georgia because you still got
- 35:22Speaker 1: to put those guys in the hotel. You still got
- 35:24Speaker 1: to put those guys on a plane. You still got
- 35:25Speaker 1: to feed those guys. You got to bring those guys back.
- 35:27Speaker 1: In addition to the human capital, which is some guys
- 35:30Speaker 1: can go.
- 35:30Speaker 3: How different than the season teams though, I mean they
- 35:32Speaker 3: could drive to Georgia.
- 35:33Speaker 1: Couldn't They know they're not driving the probably Georgia. All
- 35:36Speaker 1: that stuff comes out of that cost, So that one
- 35:39Speaker 1: point seven may actually turn into seven hundred grand or
- 35:41Speaker 1: five hundred grand once you delete the costs. Deon Sanders
- 35:44Speaker 1: talked about this why money games aren't always what they see.
- 35:47Speaker 1: So what I would say is that if I'm a
- 35:49Speaker 1: program like Marshall or Ohio University or whoever, if I'm
- 35:54Speaker 1: looking for a money game, I'm looking for something right
- 35:56Speaker 1: close proximity. So I'm trying to play Ohio State so
- 36:00Speaker 1: I can drive. That's about a two hour drive. I
- 36:07Speaker 1: hit it, hit, come back. So all that one point seven,
- 36:09Speaker 1: whatever they're gonna pay me, I can keep as much
- 36:11Speaker 1: as possible. I ain't trying to get on a plane
- 36:13Speaker 1: and drive, go halfway across the country, have that expense
- 36:16Speaker 1: and then come back when I got my revenue is this,
- 36:19Speaker 1: but my profit is that. So I think I'm all
- 36:21Speaker 1: for money games. I think it's a revenue sharing model.
- 36:24Speaker 1: I think they ought to do a bunch of money
- 36:25Speaker 1: games to help some of these the lower programs. But
- 36:29Speaker 1: I would also I would my suggestion, would we keep
- 36:32Speaker 1: those games in close proximity so you can keep that money.
- 36:35Speaker 2: Coach Prewitt, when when I.
- 36:37Speaker 3: Was scheduling, sometimes does.
- 36:40Speaker 2: The problem.
- 36:40Speaker 1: I was at State. When I was at State and
- 36:43Speaker 1: Coach Prewitt was at Marshall and we played Marshall. That
- 36:50Speaker 1: was that was a quote money game. And I mean,
- 36:53Speaker 1: obviously we didn't get you know, we did we didn't
- 36:56Speaker 1: get anything like that, but the the amount that we got,
- 37:00Speaker 1: and I don't actually remember the total amount, but it
- 37:04Speaker 1: was enough for us to cover all the hotel expenses
- 37:11Speaker 1: that we might have for the season the season, so
- 37:14Speaker 1: it was it was enough for us to.
- 37:17Speaker 2: Now any money that we raised, any money that we.
- 37:22Speaker 1: Had budget budget wise, we didn't have to touch and
- 37:28Speaker 1: we had to and if without that, without that game,
- 37:33Speaker 1: we may not have been able to actually finish out
- 37:37Speaker 1: the whole season with with all the funding with you know,
- 37:40Speaker 1: because we were playing paying fees for the some of
- 37:42Speaker 1: the students who were full rides. We had to pay
- 37:45Speaker 1: that dollar. That was dollars coming out of our budget.
- 37:48Speaker 1: And it didn't cost you anything to go to the game, right,
- 37:52Speaker 1: it was all pretty much that game was all profit.
- 37:55Speaker 1: But if you think like Marshall for example, so they
- 37:58Speaker 1: go to Georgia to open them season, they get the
- 38:00Speaker 1: one point seven and then just this past week they
- 38:02Speaker 1: got to go all the way to Louisiana and come
- 38:04Speaker 1: all the way back. So it's not like you're going
- 38:06Speaker 1: down there Saturday morning and coming back Saturday night. Probably
- 38:08Speaker 1: down there Thursday, and all that racks up. Yeah, I
- 38:11Speaker 1: mean you're talking about those two games that travel alone.
- 38:14Speaker 1: Not to say it's one point seven, but it's significant.
- 38:17Speaker 1: And you got to you got you got eighty ninety
- 38:20Speaker 1: one hundred kids.
- 38:21Speaker 3: The band take you take a lot, Yeah, you take
- 38:24Speaker 3: the whole.
- 38:24Speaker 1: I don't think they take the band. I'm not a
- 38:27Speaker 1: school like Martina. They're not taking a band everywhere. You know,
- 38:30Speaker 1: you got a hotel, cheerleaders maybe hotels, you got meals,
- 38:35Speaker 1: yeah significant, you know, and and and you probably will
- 38:39Speaker 1: get a practice. You'll you'll probably have to pay for
- 38:41Speaker 1: a place to get a walk through practice.
- 38:45Speaker 2: I mean that's see that's what I'm saying.
- 38:47Speaker 1: I'm saying like, if you're going to take those games,
- 38:49Speaker 1: depending on where the game is, I would try to
- 38:52Speaker 1: negotiate not only just that one point seven, but I
- 38:55Speaker 1: want like travel expenses, Like.
- 38:57Speaker 3: Maybe help me out with that.
- 38:58Speaker 2: Maybe maybe.
- 39:01Speaker 1: I've never heard anybody getting detailed about it.
- 39:06Speaker 2: Dion when he was at Jackson State, he got detailed
- 39:08Speaker 2: about it.
- 39:08Speaker 1: He was like, man, we ain't really making that much
- 39:10Speaker 1: off these money games because we got to pay for everything.
- 39:13Speaker 1: So to me, is it I think it's well worth it.
- 39:16Speaker 1: It just depends on the proximity to where that money
- 39:19Speaker 1: game is.
- 39:19Speaker 2: See.
- 39:19Speaker 1: And I think I think that a lot of the
- 39:22Speaker 1: average fan does not think about the expenses that.
- 39:28Speaker 2: Come with with a sport, and.
- 39:32Speaker 1: Specifically football, you know, because you you got trainers, you've
- 39:36Speaker 1: got equipment people.
- 39:38Speaker 2: You know, you got to bring all this extra stuff.
- 39:41Speaker 3: And and just I mean this is just a reality
- 39:44Speaker 3: that these are needed, I mean necessary. Evil You've got
- 39:47Speaker 3: to go and you've got to go get beat and
- 39:49Speaker 3: you you walk off with your check and say thanks
- 39:51Speaker 3: a lot, you know.
- 39:52Speaker 1: And the and the and to add insult to injury,
- 39:56Speaker 1: the football teams going down there taking that whooping, and
- 39:58Speaker 1: that whatever the profit is from that check that they
- 40:02Speaker 1: just received is dispersed among the Olympic sports.
- 40:06Speaker 2: Yeah, great, thanks guys. So they get.
- 40:08Speaker 3: A little general.
- 40:11Speaker 2: So you don't even keep one hundred percent.
- 40:13Speaker 1: So that's what like what coach Prown was saying was like,
- 40:16Speaker 1: this ain't this ain't everything that you think it is.
- 40:18Speaker 1: Just taking this big. I just think it looks big.
- 40:22Speaker 1: It looks bigger than what you start.
- 40:24Speaker 3: They had to do it without that money. I don't
- 40:27Speaker 3: know how they would.
- 40:27Speaker 1: I mean, you have to, but I just my thing is,
- 40:29Speaker 1: if you're going to do it, I would say close proximity.
- 40:33Speaker 1: I don't think. I don't think in hold. I'm curious
- 40:36Speaker 1: with what you think that this. I don't think there's
- 40:38Speaker 1: a a college football program maybe with the exception of
- 40:45Speaker 1: UC maybe that wouldn't play a money game in the
- 40:51Speaker 1: state somewhat all of them. I mean, I mean w
- 40:55Speaker 1: v O obviously they are the money game for some
- 40:57Speaker 1: for some some Robert, but they didn't play Robert earlier
- 41:00Speaker 1: in Ohio, so that you had to pay.
- 41:04Speaker 2: They paid out. So but to your point, you got
- 41:06Speaker 2: to like you got to just and that's an.
- 41:08Speaker 3: Argument why you know, Marshall and WU don't play that.
- 41:11Speaker 3: They play teams like you know, Robert Morris, and they
- 41:13Speaker 3: play teams like Ohio University. Marshall could be a you know,
- 41:16Speaker 3: that would be beneficial.
- 41:18Speaker 2: Money in the state. They should play exactly.
- 41:20Speaker 3: That's what I'm thinking.
- 41:22Speaker 2: I would be all for them playing.
- 41:24Speaker 3: I don't like it, but I mean I think it's
- 41:26Speaker 3: it's it's a valuable game for both schools and the fans.
- 41:29Speaker 1: I think that every person who's a football fan is
- 41:35Speaker 1: trying to get to that game.
- 41:36Speaker 2: I don't care who. I don't care who your team is.
- 41:39Speaker 1: It's going to sell out in the state and you're
- 41:43Speaker 1: going to make tons of money.
- 41:45Speaker 2: And I don't even care.
- 41:47Speaker 1: We have to play that game in in Morgantown every
- 41:50Speaker 1: year because the stadium is going to Georgia.
- 41:53Speaker 3: Why not go to w I mean, yeah, I'm with you.
- 41:56Speaker 3: Some of those fans that you know in Huntington are like, oh,
- 41:58Speaker 3: we want you know, to for one, three, four, No
- 42:01Speaker 3: until until you beat them. You have nothing to to,
- 42:05Speaker 3: you know, try to negotiate with you. Just go to
- 42:07Speaker 3: Morgantown and if you win maybe maybe.
- 42:10Speaker 1: Then yeah, yeah you can't. I don't I don't really
- 42:13Speaker 1: think that you can, you know you can. You can
- 42:16Speaker 1: ask them to come to Huntington. I don't see why
- 42:19Speaker 1: they would come.
- 42:20Speaker 2: Now, you just played before, but it was you just
- 42:23Speaker 2: played at Morgantown. Yes.
- 42:24Speaker 1: Yeah, it's a simple stake and it's and it's a
- 42:27Speaker 1: better ven.
- 42:29Speaker 2: That should be the opener every season.
- 42:31Speaker 3: Exactly.
- 42:31Speaker 6: I was at one of the last times when WVU
- 42:34Speaker 6: came down and played at Marshall, and it was like
- 42:37Speaker 6: forty three thousand people in the zone, which is technically
- 42:40Speaker 6: only seats like thirty.
- 42:43Speaker 3: It was crazy aisles, It was.
- 42:45Speaker 2: Standing room only.
- 42:46Speaker 6: It was a lot of people.
- 42:47Speaker 3: It was almost like when WU went to Ohio University.
- 42:50Speaker 3: I mean it was basically that it was.
- 42:51Speaker 1: It was that crowd, played a game, put other stuff,
- 42:55Speaker 1: but everybody, every every sports fan is looking for that game. Yeah,
- 43:01Speaker 1: I mean it's the same thing like WVU in Marshall.
- 43:04Speaker 1: They used to come to the Civic Center and Charleston
- 43:06Speaker 1: and play.
- 43:06Speaker 2: Play the game. Yeah, play y'all overthink it every time.
- 43:12Speaker 2: Just play the game.
- 43:13Speaker 1: They have a soccer robery, now baseball robery. Play the game.
- 43:19Speaker 2: What is the what is what is the do any
- 43:21Speaker 2: of you all know? Like, what is the reasoning? That
- 43:24Speaker 2: it's not being played now.
- 43:26Speaker 1: Well, has there been a conversation about football the thought
- 43:30Speaker 1: that what I've always heard number one is it didn't
- 43:33Speaker 1: make sense for WVU, and it was a situation in
- 43:36Speaker 1: which why would you have an empty stadium with two
- 43:39Speaker 1: D one schools in the state with only two D
- 43:41Speaker 1: one schools where you can have two full stadiums that
- 43:44Speaker 1: they played a different teams. So to me, it was
- 43:48Speaker 1: always from like the WVU side, they just have more
- 43:50Speaker 1: to lose playing the game than marsh That's what I heard.
- 43:53Speaker 3: And I think the Marshall fans on the other side
- 43:55Speaker 3: of the coin, they wanted the deals where they come
- 43:58Speaker 3: to Huntington at least like once out of every three years,
- 44:02Speaker 3: or I can I.
- 44:03Speaker 2: Can see that. I can see that, But I.
- 44:06Speaker 3: Never won a game against WU. I will till you win.
- 44:09Speaker 3: You have nothing to negotiate with. End of story. Go
- 44:12Speaker 3: to Morgantown, get your check.
- 44:14Speaker 2: I get it.
- 44:16Speaker 1: I'm one hundred percent agree with you, But I'm just
- 44:18Speaker 1: saying I could I could see why Marshall would say, okay,
- 44:23Speaker 1: every two years, every five years, you know, I mean,
- 44:26Speaker 1: I could see that just as a negotiation. But I
- 44:29Speaker 1: also think man like we're like, like we just said, man,
- 44:32Speaker 1: we're in a day and age where rivalies are gone.
- 44:34Speaker 1: When you are, when you're WVU and you're playing like
- 44:38Speaker 1: the Utah the b y u s, why nobody really
- 44:41Speaker 1: cares about those? Yeah nobody. I mean saying we want you.
- 44:46Speaker 1: We want WVU to win, no doubt. And then they
- 44:48Speaker 1: may even have some good exciting teams, but there's nothing
- 44:51Speaker 1: really for it and for the fans other than the
- 44:53Speaker 1: ceing WV you win. I think this is just the
- 44:54Speaker 1: opportunity because there's nothing better. You get back, put back
- 44:57Speaker 1: on the schedule full time, you get Marshall on schedu
- 45:00Speaker 1: were full time.
- 45:00Speaker 2: Even take like a Virginia Tech, get them three games,
- 45:03Speaker 2: so let's go.
- 45:04Speaker 1: There's nothing There is nothing better than a rival game
- 45:07Speaker 1: and nothing better.
- 45:08Speaker 3: And the Big Twelve, you know, when they joined the
- 45:10Speaker 3: Big Twelve, it's been kind of diluted since then because
- 45:13Speaker 3: Texas left. Who else left the Big Twelve?
- 45:16Speaker 2: I know somebody else like Texas A and M.
- 45:18Speaker 3: Texas A and M. You know, those were those were
- 45:21Speaker 3: kind of exciting games because Texas is always good. Texas
- 45:24Speaker 3: A and M's fun too, But it's not like it was.
- 45:28Speaker 2: Well, speaking of ribvalies.
- 45:30Speaker 1: We I think we have a budding ribbery in the
- 45:32Speaker 1: NFL Packers versus Cowboys. Uh, you know what Michael Parson's
- 45:36Speaker 1: going and there was a tie. So, like we talked
- 45:40Speaker 1: about it, how do we feel about the current NFL
- 45:44Speaker 1: system when it comes to overtime and different things of
- 45:46Speaker 1: that nature.
- 45:48Speaker 3: Somebody needs to win here.
- 45:51Speaker 2: That's that's that's how I look at it.
- 45:53Speaker 1: I don't want I want to be able to walk
- 45:56Speaker 1: out of the stadium and know that I won or
- 46:00Speaker 1: long and currently how would it how the rules? You
- 46:02Speaker 1: correct me if I'm wrong, you get basically two overtimes
- 46:06Speaker 1: and if nobody comes ahead, and those two overtimes and
- 46:08Speaker 1: stem over. Yeah, correct, it's the time, so one over
- 46:10Speaker 1: time and there's no sudden death. Back in the day,
- 46:16Speaker 1: it used to be whoever winning coin toss first and
- 46:19Speaker 1: whoever score first. Basically one except for a field goal.
- 46:22Speaker 1: So if you get if you kick the field goal,
- 46:24Speaker 1: then the other team would get an opportunity to match
- 46:26Speaker 1: it or or get the touchdown. So I think I
- 46:29Speaker 1: would like to say to it, Well, I'll.
- 46:32Speaker 2: Let you say. You you said, what would be your rule?
- 46:34Speaker 2: Change to that?
- 46:35Speaker 1: My rule would be I just want to go out
- 46:39Speaker 1: or you play the game. I'm okay with if you score,
- 46:44Speaker 1: but I don't want a field goal. If you can
- 46:47Speaker 1: score a touchdown, if you can drive, you can take
- 46:49Speaker 1: a drive eighty yard drive, score a touchdown, boom.
- 46:53Speaker 2: See.
- 46:53Speaker 1: I say, you keep the two overtimes. Nobody wins in overtime,
- 46:57Speaker 1: the two overtimes. Then you go to sudden death after that. Yeah,
- 47:00Speaker 1: that's what that's what you're saying.
- 47:02Speaker 2: Are you just saying, just the regular game, just like
- 47:05Speaker 2: it's a regular quarter.
- 47:07Speaker 1: You get to two ten minute quarters. So after the
- 47:09Speaker 1: game is done tied up, you get one quarter. You
- 47:15Speaker 1: know what I'm saying, two ten minute quarters. If we
- 47:18Speaker 1: still don't have we're still tied at that point, then
- 47:20Speaker 1: you go to a sudden that you do the foreign
- 47:21Speaker 1: cause I would say even get rid of the kickoff.
- 47:23Speaker 1: Forget the kickoff. Just started your twenty like, you know
- 47:26Speaker 1: what I'm saying, So get rid of.
- 47:27Speaker 3: The kick that much time.
- 47:28Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean you're stopping.
- 47:29Speaker 1: You're not starting at there, you're starting at so you
- 47:32Speaker 1: gotta drive eighty eighty you know what I'm saying.
- 47:34Speaker 2: So I would say just do that. That's and then
- 47:36Speaker 2: if you went from there, you won.
- 47:38Speaker 1: You know what I mean, I'm good with anything that
- 47:42Speaker 1: can get you away from the tie, because you just
- 47:46Speaker 1: you done played all day and you're gonna walk a
- 47:50Speaker 1: stadium and say, oh, well we tied, and where does
- 47:53Speaker 1: that fit at the end of the year.
- 47:56Speaker 3: Well, at the end of the year that well, on
- 47:59Speaker 3: tie games. You know how they have a point system
- 48:01Speaker 3: when it comes to the playoffs. Tie games count as
- 48:03Speaker 3: a half win and a half loss. Wow, it's whatever. Yeah,
- 48:09Speaker 3: that's what I make. A point in a half a
- 48:12Speaker 3: point could make a difference. I mean, that's just.
- 48:19Speaker 1: What's the argument against it? Though, because the argument against
- 48:23Speaker 1: number one, as far as sudden death of having too
- 48:25Speaker 1: much footballs obviously guys can get hurt. But the argument
- 48:28Speaker 1: too is that even if I have to drive eighty
- 48:30Speaker 1: and a sudden death really with kickers now you may
- 48:33Speaker 1: only have to drive forty.
- 48:35Speaker 2: Yeah, you know what I'm saying, kickers can.
- 48:37Speaker 1: Boot it once you get it's it's like, but but
- 48:41Speaker 1: again to your point, that's that's part of the game.
- 48:43Speaker 1: I mean, you you play defense, you got to stop them.
- 48:45Speaker 1: So I say, I still want the sudden death.
- 48:48Speaker 3: Yeah, I think I think that's a good sense.
- 48:49Speaker 6: Why not just do it like basketball. You give them
- 48:52Speaker 6: the ten minutes and just let them play, and whoever's
- 48:55Speaker 6: got more points at the end of ten minutes is
- 48:56Speaker 6: the winner.
- 48:57Speaker 2: But that's the point that if you what if you
- 48:59Speaker 2: don't what if you say tied up.
- 49:00Speaker 3: They were tied last night.
- 49:03Speaker 6: Period, you played the whole ten minutes and then do
- 49:05Speaker 6: a sudden death or something like that.
- 49:07Speaker 2: So you're saying one tenn I like it. But that's
- 49:10Speaker 2: not bad.
- 49:10Speaker 6: Neither, yeah, because now it's like you're giving each team
- 49:13Speaker 6: a possession and all that stuff.
- 49:15Speaker 1: Just play the ten, flip the coin whoever gets it,
- 49:19Speaker 1: and you play your ten.
- 49:21Speaker 2: Yeah, and you see what happened.
- 49:23Speaker 6: I mean, one team might score in the first minute,
- 49:25Speaker 6: and then the other team's got nine minutes, they may
- 49:27Speaker 6: take up all nine. Maybe they'll go score in a
- 49:29Speaker 6: couple of minutes and it goes back and just play
- 49:31Speaker 6: the whole ten play.
- 49:32Speaker 2: Quarter like another quarter. Yeah.
- 49:34Speaker 1: Now, so currently they don't play it like another It's
- 49:38Speaker 1: like you get okay, I see what you're saying. So
- 49:40Speaker 1: it's just it's just a whole. It's just a quarter.
- 49:42Speaker 1: So you're just saying play.
- 49:43Speaker 3: Just play an extra quarter. Basically, Yeah, it happens to
- 49:49Speaker 3: play the ten. Yeah, let the coins fallow where they may.
- 49:52Speaker 7: Well.
- 49:52Speaker 3: Last night was horrible and I'm so glad I went
- 49:54Speaker 3: to bed. I'm so glad at my house. My husband's
- 49:58Speaker 3: a Cowboys fan. Oh man, I'm a poker fan, and
- 50:01Speaker 3: it's not the most comfortable even to be at the Nelson.
- 50:05Speaker 1: But it's crazy how that's turned into like a little
- 50:07Speaker 1: rivalry now, just just based off of one trade, you know.
- 50:12Speaker 2: So I actually I loved it. Man.
- 50:14Speaker 1: The NFL has been super good. It's been super good.
- 50:17Speaker 1: The chiefs beat of the Ravens. Ravens have been very disappointed.
- 50:20Speaker 1: The Ravens are many going apart.
- 50:23Speaker 2: I don't that.
- 50:24Speaker 1: And it's crazy because when you have like such elite offense,
- 50:28Speaker 1: no they need, they need Lawrence Taylor, they need back there.
- 50:31Speaker 1: That defense is the worst. That defense can't stop a nosebleed.
- 50:36Speaker 1: I mean, it's it is bad. And and they were
- 50:38Speaker 1: been known for their defense. And when you have such
- 50:40Speaker 1: elite offensive talent and your defense can't do nothing, it's
- 50:43Speaker 1: just it's to moralized. Trust me, I have been I
- 50:47Speaker 1: have fortunately been on some really really good defensive teams
- 50:51Speaker 1: that had a ton of great players on it, and.
- 50:55Speaker 2: We we struggled with the offense.
- 50:57Speaker 1: Yeah, you're out there, you're laying hard, you feel good,
- 51:01Speaker 1: you high five in each other. You go to the bench.
- 51:04Speaker 1: Two minutes later, you're back on the field. They throw
- 51:07Speaker 1: an interception, fumble the ball, or go three plays and
- 51:10Speaker 1: out and you're back on the field. You're like, Okay,
- 51:14Speaker 1: let's come on, guys, let's just go. You can only
- 51:16Speaker 1: do that for so long, right, you know, I remember
- 51:19Speaker 1: being a state and we had most of the time
- 51:20Speaker 1: we had better defense than offense. But I can remember
- 51:23Speaker 1: a seayre offense was clearly better. And you go out there,
- 51:27Speaker 1: you score twenty eight thirty points, what said you should weak.
- 51:31Speaker 2: Points as you win by and just they just give
- 51:33Speaker 2: it up and then you do stage.
- 51:35Speaker 3: I'm going to bring something up because we have a
- 51:39Speaker 3: man of honor us tonight, don't we? We do we
- 51:42Speaker 3: have mister Lewis didn't want to say anything, but he
- 51:47Speaker 3: was the recipient of the Young Professional Achievement Award.
- 51:51Speaker 1: I'm question young, is that that part is a little concerning?
- 51:57Speaker 3: I agree is, But yeah, so that's a pretty prestigious award.
- 52:02Speaker 3: Tell us a little bit about it.
- 52:04Speaker 1: It's I mean, you know, uh, to be recognized by
- 52:07Speaker 1: your alma mater and that journey going to State.
- 52:13Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying.
- 52:13Speaker 1: I was a local kid, so going to State and
- 52:15Speaker 1: just like I told you, just being part of that
- 52:19Speaker 1: village and having an opportunity to like just having the
- 52:22Speaker 1: world sort of open up to you via the collegiate
- 52:26Speaker 1: experience was a great thing and it really contributed to
- 52:29Speaker 1: everything that I'm doing now. And you know, I think
- 52:33Speaker 1: it's worth noting that. You know, that's to me, that's
- 52:36Speaker 1: sort of the true value of college. When we talk
- 52:39Speaker 1: about that collegiate experience. We can all academics are one thing,
- 52:43Speaker 1: and I think as far as providing access online schools
- 52:46Speaker 1: and different things, you can, the academics are there. But
- 52:49Speaker 1: the true value in a collegiate experience is having that,
- 52:53Speaker 1: you know, that education that you can't get into a classroom, right, right,
- 52:57Speaker 1: that that education that you get. You know, there's you know,
- 53:00Speaker 1: having mentors like Coach Lee or a variety of other people,
- 53:03Speaker 1: and you know, like I said, just meeting people from
- 53:05Speaker 1: around the country and and just being exposed. Right. But
- 53:10Speaker 1: there's you know, and I can, I mean, I can
- 53:13Speaker 1: thank you for the for the words that you spoke
- 53:16Speaker 1: about me at the event, and I'm gonna but I'm
- 53:20Speaker 1: gonna address that in a different way. When you're a
- 53:25Speaker 1: coach and you realize that there is there is somebody
- 53:31Speaker 1: that when you touch, when you come in touch with
- 53:33Speaker 1: them like you, you realize that there's something better for
- 53:39Speaker 1: them than what the ball is gonna bring mm hmm.
- 53:43Speaker 1: And that was that was clear with Hollis from the
- 53:48Speaker 1: time that I met him. He got out on the field,
- 53:52Speaker 1: it's good quarterback, but everything about him spoke to.
- 53:58Speaker 2: Me success right, and he was he was. He was so.
- 54:08Speaker 1: Different than most players from a from a mannerisms, personality
- 54:14Speaker 1: kind of way that you could see. I could I
- 54:16Speaker 1: felt like football was something that I think he enjoyed,
- 54:20Speaker 1: but it wasn't. He wasn't ate up with it most
- 54:24Speaker 1: guys like, yeah, there was something else, something bigger, emotional.
- 54:33Speaker 2: He was He was just simply he was. He was different.
- 54:38Speaker 1: He played football because he played football in high school
- 54:42Speaker 1: and he was good enough to earn a scholarship.
- 54:44Speaker 2: He was good enough to play.
- 54:47Speaker 1: But what he but all of his focus was was
- 54:51Speaker 1: on a greatness that did not have the ball involved
- 54:54Speaker 1: with it, and you could see it. And then to
- 54:58Speaker 1: be able to be front center and witness him receiving
- 55:02Speaker 1: that award was was an honor for me. And I
- 55:07Speaker 1: could even make the case that I wasn't shocked, you know,
- 55:12Speaker 1: I wasn't shocked. I feel like if there if that
- 55:15Speaker 1: award has been out there for a while, I'm trying
- 55:17Speaker 1: to figure out like why.
- 55:18Speaker 2: He hadn't gotten.
- 55:21Speaker 6: You know.
- 55:22Speaker 1: So just just to say this, and and and for
- 55:26Speaker 1: the people who are listening, and for the people who
- 55:28Speaker 1: may not know Hollis personally, what you when you when
- 55:33Speaker 1: you find a young man.
- 55:35Speaker 2: That has a goal.
- 55:39Speaker 1: And has a mindset of wanting to be something different,
- 55:44Speaker 1: something better and do better for other people, that is
- 55:48Speaker 1: who he is to me.
- 55:50Speaker 2: That's who he is, and that's who he's always been.
- 55:53Speaker 1: Detective Now now next Monday, Yeah, he'll be fired by
- 56:01Speaker 1: next Monday. So all right, well, ladies and gentlemen, we're
- 56:05Speaker 1: gonna get out of here and we will see you
