Transcript
- 0:00SPEAKER_01: Down in Mayberry, things are just grand.
- 0:04SPEAKER_01: It's the friendliest little podcast in the land.
- 0:09SPEAKER_01: Nip it in the bud.
- 0:16SPEAKER_02: Hi everyone.
- 0:17SPEAKER_02: Welcome back to Nip It in the Bud, our Andy Griffith Tribute Podcast.
- 0:22SPEAKER_02: I'm Paul.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: And I'm Tim.
- 0:25SPEAKER_02: So in season one, episode four, Ellie comes to town.
- 0:30SPEAKER_02: And I'm going to explain that artwork, the update with the Aunt Roe was right.
- 0:40SPEAKER_02: And and so I don't know if I've ever told you, Tim, about my uh my Aunt Roe.
- 0:46SPEAKER_02: Rosemary is her name, my mom's sister.
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 0:49SPEAKER_02: And and when I grew up, and I and I and uh you would be, I would say the same, right?
- 0:55SPEAKER_02: We were like the first uh like true TV generation.
- 1:00SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: I would say so.
- 1:01SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:02SPEAKER_02: And it's actually similar to, I guess, now with you know the kids growing up with phones all the time streaming, and everybody saying, boy, that's bad.
- 1:14SPEAKER_02: That's good, bad things are gonna happen.
- 1:17SPEAKER_02: And yes.
- 1:18SPEAKER_02: And my aunt was ahead of her time and predicting that that was bad.
- 1:24SPEAKER_02: And and my mom would always tell me, she's like, you know, your your aunt Rose says you watch too much TV.
- 1:32SPEAKER_02: And and my parents always supported my TV uh watching, and but my aunt thought it was not good.
- 1:42SPEAKER_02: And uh, so all these years later, I I uh I remembered that when we were doing these podcasts, and I thought, you know, as I'm watching these episodes and preparing for us to talk, I'm thinking, you know, Aunt Ro was right.
- 1:58SPEAKER_02: I did watch and do watch too much TV.
- 2:02SPEAKER_02: So I want to I want to honor her a little bit by uh mentioning her gr her prediction.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: I love it, Paul.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: I think that's great.
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: What a great story.
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: And yeah, let's let's do good by Aunt Ro's memory today.
- 2:17SPEAKER_02: And how about those credits, uh, Tim, with uh Eleanor Donnie who really moved up the in her first episode, she's above Don Knotts.
- 2:27SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: How about that?
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that uh that's her first appearance, but she also appears in the credits ahead of Don Knotts, which is I think some indication of how they felt she was going to contribute to the show, that she was gonna be a big part of it.
- 2:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and she had been a star on uh you know Father Knows Best, the one of the the oldest daughter, uh Betty of uh Robert Young, the star of Father Knows Best.
- 3:00SPEAKER_02: So she kind of established herself there and went right from that hit show when it ended to over to to uh Andy Griffith.
- 3:10SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: Man, so she was a rising star for sure at that time, uh, but she had really been a child actor, and I guess we've been talking about Ronnie Howard in that respect the last few weeks, but to see another one who kind of came up through the ranks as a child actor, and then she had a long career as an adult, too.
- 3:34SPEAKER_02: And she's still with us, she's 89 now, and I I saw her uh watch one of our interviews, and and anybody that uh hasn't done it, the Television Academy website has uh you just do a search, and there's uh fantastic uh and very long interviews with uh you know many of our favorites.
- 3:59SPEAKER_02: Uh and also the thing that's nice about it is there they have like chapter markers.
- 4:05SPEAKER_02: So, you know, like in Eleanor Donahue's case, when she talks about, you know, like fathers knows best is separated.
- 4:12SPEAKER_02: Like if you just want to hear that, you can just hear that section.
- 4:16SPEAKER_02: And you can go, yeah, makes it really convenient, it's really well done.
- 4:21SPEAKER_02: And and in her um interview, she said the producers of Andy Griffith uh she didn't mention Andy for that.
- 4:30SPEAKER_02: Uh uh it was like not an audition.
- 4:34SPEAKER_02: They just met with her and talked to her about the show, and uh, she was interested.
- 4:40SPEAKER_02: And she said when she got home, she got a call and said she got the part.
- 4:43SPEAKER_02: So she they just kind of told her about it.
- 4:45SPEAKER_02: She never had to read for it or anything.
- 4:48SPEAKER_02: And interesting.
- 4:50SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it was yeah, I was really surprised.
- 4:53SPEAKER_02: And she said she uh signed a three-year contract, which I I don't know that I ever knew that, but since then I've seen there's been a lot, there's been a lot written about that that I I just wasn't aware of.
- 5:07SPEAKER_02: But but she said one of the things that started happening was during the table reads when they would read the script, that um Andy would uh, and she said he was the boss on the set, not not a bad boss at all, but he was in charge and uh he ran the show.
- 5:25SPEAKER_02: And she said during the table reads, uh like a lot of her lines uh as time went on, um Andy would suggest to have Don Knotch try that same line uh and to make it funnier, and and they would do that, and she said she said, and and he would like the line that she had done, she's like, I really wasn't certainly not as funny as Don Knotts, but she didn't consider herself funny, and she said Don Knotts really made it funnier, and so then he got the line, and she said little by little she kept like losing lines.
- 6:02SPEAKER_02: So you could see that kind of you know upset her, and she said she was going through a lot of personal turmoil, like when uh Father Knows Best ended, and when uh Andy Griffith began, it just kind of got worse in her personal life, and just kind of looking into what that was, she didn't mention it, but it it was a divorce she was going through at the time.
- 6:26SPEAKER_02: Okay, she had a young child, and and she um she said it was a really bad time in her life.
- 6:34SPEAKER_02: And with that happening, with her losing line, she felt she wasn't giving her best work to the show.
- 6:40SPEAKER_02: And so she approached the uh producers and she said she'd like to be out of let out of her contract at the end of the year, and and they immediately agreed.
- 6:54SPEAKER_02: And she said she would have stayed if they would have just asked her to stay.
- 6:59SPEAKER_02: She was she said at that time in her life she just wanted to be wanted, and they and they didn't they let her go.
- 7:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah, they let her go.
- 7:09SPEAKER_02: Oh it was a sad, uh, a sad moment uh to hear that.
- 7:16SPEAKER_02: But she did say, like she they asked her about, you know, well, how did they deal with you leaving the show on the show?
- 7:25SPEAKER_02: And she said she she never watched again, and she said it wasn't because of any animosity towards the show, but because she just doesn't watch much television.
- 7:36SPEAKER_02: But she said that she did end up start going to um the fan conventions.
- 7:42SPEAKER_02: And oh, is that right?
- 7:43SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and she said uh fans were always fantastic to her, even though she was just on one season.
- 7:50SPEAKER_02: Then she got to know, like she said, she never had worked with Gomer and the other characters who came later, and she got to know everybody and make new friends.
- 8:01SPEAKER_02: Well, it's it's interesting.
- 8:03SPEAKER_00: I I did come across a tidbit that she and Ron Howard are the two surviving members of the entire cast.
- 8:12SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 8:13SPEAKER_00: As of today, when we're recording this.
- 8:21SPEAKER_00: She's a year older than my dad, who is still with us too, thank goodness.
- 8:27SPEAKER_00: Right, that's right.
- 8:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah, she was she definitely made an impression on the what was it, dozen episodes that she was on, and yeah, I think there were a lot of uh good bits from this whole episode where she she did contribute a lot, I would have said.
- 8:48SPEAKER_02: Agreed, agreed, and uh and starting with this uh great first first episode.
- 8:57SPEAKER_02: And Andy, how about Andy taking uh Aunt B to the pharmacy and uh the way it opens?
- 9:05SPEAKER_00: Oh, so great that uh they are expecting to go in.
- 9:10SPEAKER_00: Aunt B wants to get some things from the drugstore, but uh the door is locked, and they chat about that.
- 9:19SPEAKER_00: They think, oh, Fred must be ailing again, and so Andy reaches up about as high as he can reach above the door frame and finds the key and lets himself in.
- 9:30SPEAKER_00: So that's comical right there.
- 9:33SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 9:35SPEAKER_02: And how about the term um you know, you don't hear that product called that much.
- 9:41SPEAKER_02: Aunt B asking for him to get some toilet water.
- 9:44SPEAKER_02: I think anybody here in toilet water right now wouldn't really think that that is perfume.
- 9:52SPEAKER_02: You would think toilet water wouldn't smell good.
- 9:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah, completely different uh connotation now, but at that time, and and it's so funny to hear Andy um in the role of the shopkeeper, right?
- 10:10SPEAKER_00: He he decides to get behind the counter and wait on Aunt B and ask her what she wants, and then she he goes over to get the toilet water, and he's reading this inscription that's in French, and he does a horrible job of trying to pronounce everything.
- 10:27SPEAKER_00: It's uh it's a great little comic piece.
- 10:30SPEAKER_02: And he gave us some insight into uh his backstory because he says he was in France during the war.
- 10:37SPEAKER_00: How about that?
- 10:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I don't know that I've heard him talk much about his you know um that Andy Taylor being in the military.
- 10:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 10:48SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's uh and he says it was a great smelling country.
- 10:54SPEAKER_00: Yes, yes, perfect.
- 10:58SPEAKER_02: And then Ellie kind of shows up and sees that door pried open.
- 11:05SPEAKER_00: Right, she's kind of in a panic, and she she's calling for uh some help and she sees Barney and she's officer, officer.
- 11:15SPEAKER_00: And of course, uh great setup that Barney is parked right next to the mailbox, so he's reading the newspaper and reading the newspaper, and uh some great physical comedy trying to see him squeeze his way out of the door next to the mailbox.
- 11:37SPEAKER_02: You know what was funny too is she she said you could um why don't you just go out the other side?
- 11:43SPEAKER_02: You know, a lot of times on TV, you know, they you know the the audience is thinking that you know that type of solution.
- 11:51SPEAKER_02: But I thought it was pretty cool back then to have her say that because that's so true.
- 11:56SPEAKER_02: What why are you doing it?
- 11:58SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 11:59SPEAKER_00: Well, and as something you would see in this show, particularly, oh, sliding to the opposite side, because unlike the cars of today, there would be a bench seat in the front.
- 12:12SPEAKER_00: Yes, and you could actually slide across without killing yourself, going across the the console and whatever else is in the middle of the car now.
- 12:22SPEAKER_02: You could have three people in that front seat, at least three.
- 12:26SPEAKER_00: I certainly remember growing up with that, and I bet you did too.
- 12:31SPEAKER_02: Definitely sitting in that middle seat there.
- 12:34SPEAKER_02: That that was nice sitting there.
- 12:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 12:37SPEAKER_02: Well, Barney comes in, you know, right away he's got that uh got the gun out, which is a never good idea.
- 12:46SPEAKER_00: A never good idea for Barney.
- 12:48SPEAKER_00: No.
- 12:51SPEAKER_00: So he's he's expecting a criminal encounter, and what does he find?
- 12:56SPEAKER_00: But Andy bent down behind the counter, uh, trying to get something else for Aunt B.
- 13:02SPEAKER_00: And he comes in guns ablazing, right?
- 13:06SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 13:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so and that's when um Aunt B kind of lets us know that that's Fred's niece Ellie.
- 13:16SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 13:17SPEAKER_02: She had heard about that, that she was gonna come help him.
- 13:21SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 13:22SPEAKER_00: So it's a it's a very inauspicious introduction, you might say, to Ellie Walker, or or put another way, there's a lot of action.
- 13:33SPEAKER_00: Uh instead of just, oh, hello, you're you must be Fred's niece.
- 13:38SPEAKER_00: No, it's it's all kind of in in service of trying to catch the criminals who have broken into the drugstore.
- 13:49SPEAKER_00: Ellie is so upset, so upset.
- 13:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 13:54SPEAKER_00: She she's there, it's her first day, and all of a sudden everything seems to be going wrong.
- 14:00SPEAKER_00: It's it just is completely out of her control.
- 14:06SPEAKER_02: Especially when Andy's ringing up the purchases, he's working the cash register, he's putting change in and money in them in the in the register, and and she's just like once him out of there.
- 14:21SPEAKER_02: And Andy did a good job of conceit.
- 14:24SPEAKER_02: I mean, because you aunt being even Barney are kind of taken aback by Ellie's abruptness, and Andy did a really nice job of trying his best to smooth the whole situation.
- 14:37SPEAKER_02: It was uh I don't know that he was that successful, but he did calm her down.
- 14:42SPEAKER_00: Right, right.
- 14:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and and he's putting on the southern charm, you might say, trying to smooth the situation over.
- 14:52SPEAKER_00: And I think it's about the time that he's doing that, that uh he walks back out, and who is there in the store now but Emma Brand, who we saw in the manhunt episode?
- 15:04SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 15:06SPEAKER_02: She she never and that's where it really comes to light that she never misses an opportunity to tell Andy about all of her ailments.
- 15:17unknown: Yeah.
- 15:17SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 15:18SPEAKER_00: Andy's about ready to leave, and she says, Andy, aren't you gonna ask me, did I have a pain last night?
- 15:28SPEAKER_00: And then just to hear her old description of it when he says, Oh, I'm so sorry, Emma.
- 15:34SPEAKER_00: Did you have a pain last night?
- 15:35SPEAKER_00: Oh, Andy, did I have a pain?
- 15:39SPEAKER_00: You know, went up down one side, up the other, around the back, and up to her neck, and it was oh clearly this was the episode to introduce Ellie Walker or Eleanor Donahue into the cast.
- 15:53SPEAKER_00: And who takes it over, though, but Emma Brand.
- 15:58SPEAKER_00: She she just grabs a hold of every scene that she's in, and it's great.
- 16:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and it it kind of continues then.
- 16:07SPEAKER_00: They they uh she has her episode with Ellie not wanting to give her her pills.
- 16:16SPEAKER_00: That's all she describes them as, is she wants her pills, and here's my dime.
- 16:21SPEAKER_00: And uh again, uh Ellie must feel like she just landed from another planet.
- 16:27SPEAKER_00: Like, what pills and why do they only cost a dime?
- 16:32SPEAKER_00: It's um another kind of fish out of water situation for Ellie Walker.
- 16:39SPEAKER_02: And Ellie's demanding or at least ask him for the prescription, you know, which we're all I mean, maybe then it wasn't as a familiar of a term, but uh definitely in Mayberry it wasn't, but but uh yeah, she just needs a prescription and she can have her pills.
- 16:57SPEAKER_02: And uh Emma, there's yeah, what's that?
- 17:02SPEAKER_02: She's not going to any doctor.
- 17:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I never had a prescription, never had to have a prescription before, and all this and that.
- 17:10SPEAKER_00: And she's really put out that Ellie is not going to give her her pills because she even points over behind the counter.
- 17:17SPEAKER_00: It's those blue ones in that jar there.
- 17:20SPEAKER_02: And uh Emma was really angry at this.
- 17:27SPEAKER_02: You don't want to get Emma mad.
- 17:29SPEAKER_02: And she goes over to Andy, over to the uh the sheriff's office and to report a murder.
- 17:38SPEAKER_00: That that might have been the my favorite scene of the whole thing.
- 17:42SPEAKER_00: She wants to report a murder, and Andy and Barney just immediately jump into action, like, you want to report a murder?
- 17:50SPEAKER_00: Who who got murdered?
- 17:53SPEAKER_00: Yes, she said, me.
- 17:56SPEAKER_00: Lady druggist won't give me my pills, and just goes on from there.
- 18:03SPEAKER_02: Um you know that scene kind of I almost had like a deja vu moment of the goes to Mr.
- 18:11SPEAKER_02: Chicken, the Don Knott's film that uh like 1965, because he goes in, if you remember that film, he goes into to that sheriff's office in that film to report a murder when uh because of uh you know the fella being hit in the head with a two by four.
- 18:31SPEAKER_02: And it was kind of the same thing where the sheriff or the police chief or his role, he was like, What?
- 18:39SPEAKER_02: Everybody's like in a panic over a murder in a small town.
- 18:43SPEAKER_02: And um that whole little incident with you know her reporting that to Andy, and he was, you know, that was a big deal.
- 18:51SPEAKER_02: I mean, a big deal anywhere, but especially there.
- 18:54SPEAKER_00: Especially there.
- 18:56SPEAKER_00: And then Andy points out the technicality to her that, well, you ain't exactly dead yet.
- 19:02SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 19:03SPEAKER_00: And then she she gets in a huff and you know, leaves she bad, bad sheriff.
- 19:13SPEAKER_02: She even mentioned that she voted for him.
- 19:16SPEAKER_02: How about that?
- 19:16SPEAKER_02: I thought, wow.
- 19:18SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 19:18SPEAKER_02: Even in 1960, they're throwing that up, you know.
- 19:22SPEAKER_02: I voted for you.
- 19:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah, didn't even consider anybody else.
- 19:28SPEAKER_00: Um, but then we break from that and head back to the drugstore where you find uh Ellie cleaning I forget what kind of I don't even know what kind of soap they used back then to clean windows, but it's she had a lot of it on there.
- 19:44SPEAKER_00: A lot of it on there, just rubbing it off, and right at uh the level that she's rubbing it off, you see Opie looking in through the window.
- 19:57SPEAKER_02: Yeah, they're making faces and it was a really cute moment.
- 20:03SPEAKER_00: It really was.
- 20:04SPEAKER_00: You know, they they have their little moment together and Yep.
- 20:08SPEAKER_02: And you know, and she said during those uh those television academy interviews that that up to that point in her career, he was the best child actor she worked with, which is really saying a lot considering she was on, you know, Father Knows Best and had worked, you know, had uh you know had a career prior to Andy Griffith, and she said that uh that he was just so natural that it wasn't like you're working with like someone who's acting, and and she also uh gave kind of a uh credit to his parents about them always being on the set and how his dad would prepare him for his lines and and how just and how they were you know very good actors and uh in their own right.
- 20:55SPEAKER_02: And um, you know, it was just a nice family.
- 20:58SPEAKER_02: So it's nice to hear her say all that about uh what you know what we already knew about Ronnie, but it was good good to hear that from her too.
- 21:09SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 21:10SPEAKER_00: And for anybody listening, uh Paul put me onto it, but I've been listening to the audio version of a book called The Boys, which is sort of a dual biography or autobiography of Ron and Clint Howard.
- 21:26SPEAKER_00: And in listening to that, you really get a sense of how important Rance Howard, their dad, and and their mom, Gene Howard, were in their life.
- 21:39SPEAKER_00: And and I think I even read something, Paul, you probably came across this too, about how the interactions on the show the relationship between Opie and Andy, uh often they look to the real life relationship between Ronnie and Rancehoward for inspiration because they they really had a model relationship, I guess you'd say, uh, father and son.
- 22:12SPEAKER_00: So it's it's really interesting to hear that Eleanor Donahue picked up that as well.
- 22:18SPEAKER_00: It must have been just really clear to everybody.
- 22:23SPEAKER_02: Definitely, yeah.
- 22:25SPEAKER_02: And she she gave Opie a a free ice cream con, which really looked good.
- 22:33SPEAKER_00: Oh, and the whole sequence there where she's given it to him if he'll stop saying ain't.
- 22:42SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 22:43SPEAKER_00: So I ain't gonna say it now.
- 22:45SPEAKER_00: Oh, and yeah, and of course, not too long before Andy comes in, and he Opie's trying to explain how he's got an ice cream, but didn't have to pay for it.
- 22:55SPEAKER_00: Uh, and he said, She gave it to me on account of me or asking me not to say ain't anymore, so I ain't gonna say it no more, Pa.
- 23:08SPEAKER_02: That's so good.
- 23:12SPEAKER_02: He even weaved in how asking kids are it's just so natural of a whole conversation because kids are so blunt and just asking her, are you married?
- 23:23SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 23:24SPEAKER_02: He's looking to set up Andy already.
- 23:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he is not shy about asking her, and and then he leaves, right?
- 23:34SPEAKER_00: And they're there to uh Andy and Ellie are there to kind of awkwardly acknowledge what uh Opie brought up.
- 23:44SPEAKER_00: Really classic, good stuff, and and Andy's whole reason for coming in was to talk about Emma, and before he even gets the chance, there you see this hat just sort of floating, well, old lady's hat with a feather in it, uh kind of floating behind the counter, and all of a sudden uh they discover Emma sneaking in to get her pills.
- 24:13SPEAKER_02: How about that?
- 24:14SPEAKER_02: Her going to that lake to get her pills, it was hilarious.
- 24:18SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah, yeah, I I just love the the way they shot that.
- 24:23SPEAKER_00: Uh the way it just that's all you see is that hat kind of moving along, and and then all of a sudden it dawns on you what's going on, and then and then for Andy and Ellie in the scene too to realize, oh, that's Emma.
- 24:41SPEAKER_00: And so Ellie goes charges over there and puts a stop to it right away.
- 24:48SPEAKER_02: And and Ellie's like really tough about not only what Emma's doing with you know, basically about to commit theft, but the Andy condones it.
- 24:59SPEAKER_02: And yeah, she is not happy about that.
- 25:03SPEAKER_02: And Andy, we really see a different, I'd say maybe the first time a side of Andy that's not as you know, he is he's mad.
- 25:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he's not his affable kind of self.
- 25:15SPEAKER_00: And he kind of gets to on his soapbox a little bit about how would you feel if you're sick, and this is where he's talking to Ellie, uh, and you can't get your pills and all those kind of things.
- 25:31SPEAKER_00: And he's yeah, he's kind of been a huff about the whole thing.
- 25:36SPEAKER_02: And and really, uh, you know, besides Emma telling Ellie that she's heartless and mean, and then Andy saying those things to her, I mean, it was really a rough way to leave her, um, being new in town.
- 25:51SPEAKER_02: And um, you know, it was a little rough.
- 25:55SPEAKER_02: Uh then they then we when they come back from the break, there's Barney trying to says he says he has completely memorized these sheriff rules and wants Andy to test them.
- 26:10SPEAKER_02: And don't you feel that whole exchange?
- 26:13SPEAKER_02: Well, first of all, doesn't it seem like that exchange they was like it it's such comic relief?
- 26:19SPEAKER_02: Right, right.
- 26:21SPEAKER_02: They might have needed a little more time.
- 26:24SPEAKER_02: Uh but but remember the uh the I know you uh everybody sure Lissa will remember the preamble to the Constitution when Barney had that all locked in.
- 26:35SPEAKER_02: And yes, this this is the same thing, it was so great.
- 26:40SPEAKER_00: Oh my gosh.
- 26:42SPEAKER_00: Uh those are probably two of the most memorable scenes in the whole series for me, Paul.
- 26:49SPEAKER_00: Um and and I can't remember it, it may have been done more than that, but uh when I first saw what was what was up here, all of a sudden I couldn't help myself from laughing, thinking about what was yet to come.
- 27:05SPEAKER_00: But the the whole repartee between Andy and Barney where uh Barney asks then after after he's been studying these sheriffing rules to have Andy quiz him and uh repeat back to Andy what the rules are.
- 27:27SPEAKER_00: But he's he's pulling his hair out, and yeah.
- 27:35SPEAKER_00: It's hard to describe even how he's uh he he can't even get the first word, so but he he's saying he has it all memorized.
- 27:46SPEAKER_00: That's the that's the beauty of it.
- 27:48SPEAKER_02: He doesn't even know the first word.
- 27:50SPEAKER_00: You need the first word to get rolling.
- 27:52SPEAKER_00: So Andy gives him the first word, and it's it's like, well, okay, uh the second word.
- 28:00SPEAKER_00: And by the time they work through all that, and like you said, the whole time he's making faces, you know, he's straining so hard to remember.
- 28:11SPEAKER_00: He's mussing up his hair, he's he's got his fingers all over his face, and just in great pain trying to remember who enters next, but Aunt B coming by with some soup that she wants Barney to take over for Emma.
- 28:27SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 28:28SPEAKER_02: And and you know, the my first observation with that soup was that wasn't a lot of soup.
- 28:35SPEAKER_02: I was a little surprised that container.
- 28:37SPEAKER_02: I thought she she that's one uh one meal, she's done.
- 28:44SPEAKER_02: But apparently, though, Emma's sick in bed from not getting those pills.
- 28:49SPEAKER_00: So oh yeah, she's it's really coming on fast, I guess.
- 28:56SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 28:57SPEAKER_00: But that that's what really then drives the the final scene or the climactic scene where um Andy Andy's got his dander up again now.
- 29:10SPEAKER_00: Uh we're gonna do something about this.
- 29:12SPEAKER_00: He tells Barney to bring the uh one of the statute books.
- 29:16SPEAKER_00: They're gonna try and figure out some legal way to force uh Ellie to uh give Emma her pills, but first they've got to deliver the soup.
- 29:27SPEAKER_00: So that's where you see them next is outside Emma's house.
- 29:33SPEAKER_00: And how about that?
- 29:34SPEAKER_00: A little uh a little inconsistency because right when we watched the manhunt episode, Emma's house was not in town.
- 29:45SPEAKER_00: She was out in the country out near where the escape criminal was.
- 29:53SPEAKER_00: But now apparently maybe she's got two houses.
- 29:56SPEAKER_00: It's got a lake house right.
- 29:59SPEAKER_02: That's a good observation.
- 30:01SPEAKER_02: You're right.
- 30:02SPEAKER_02: She's got a nice little regular city house.
- 30:05SPEAKER_00: Right, right.
- 30:06SPEAKER_00: She sure does.
- 30:08SPEAKER_00: And so they sit out in the car and discuss uh possible possible uh statute that they're going to enforce to get Ellie to um give her the pills.
- 30:24SPEAKER_00: Um and and that's funny too.
- 30:27SPEAKER_00: It's a little bit about a guy who the druggist wouldn't sell him some arsenic because he wanted to, the guy who wanted to take care of some mice or rats.
- 30:39SPEAKER_00: Uh and the pharmacist saying that he's just not a responsible, careful person.
- 30:47SPEAKER_00: And Barney's reading the whole thing about how uh court sided with the uh guy who wanted to get the arsenic and on uh May 2nd, and and Andy says, Okay, we got her.
- 31:02SPEAKER_00: That's it.
- 31:03SPEAKER_00: And Barney continues to say, and he was buried on May 7th.
- 31:09SPEAKER_03: Yeah, exactly.
- 31:12SPEAKER_02: Kind of right back where they started, right back where they started from.
- 31:16SPEAKER_02: Yep.
- 31:18SPEAKER_02: So then when they how about when they go in to see Emma and she's on the laying on the couch eating a turkey leg?
- 31:25SPEAKER_02: I mean, my good who does that, yeah.
- 31:30SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I mean, she's laying around like Henry VIII on her couch, yeah.
- 31:36SPEAKER_02: Saw the food, you see a full turkey, you see food everywhere.
- 31:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah, a full turkey.
- 31:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and there they are with that small container of soup from Aunt B.
- 31:50SPEAKER_00: And it seems like just lost among all the other pork roast and whatever else she's got there piled up on the table and over near her, uh, where she's laying down on the couch.
- 32:05SPEAKER_00: And and and yeah, so they're there, and oh, they're sympathizing with her poor Emma.
- 32:14SPEAKER_00: How are you?
- 32:15SPEAKER_00: How are you doing?
- 32:16SPEAKER_00: And uh and then there's another knock at the door, and Emma almost sits up straight and says, Oh, I hope that's not more soup.
- 32:29SPEAKER_00: But who is it but Ellie Walker coming?
- 32:33SPEAKER_02: Yes, and she's got soup, and you know, I I made a note she had more soup than Aunt B in her in a much bigger container.
- 32:43SPEAKER_02: So Ellie really does it all.
- 32:46SPEAKER_02: She's the pharmacist and she's uh can make soup, and you know, she's just a uh but yeah, and she has a big surprise for Emma too, along with that soup.
- 32:59SPEAKER_00: Right, she has brought the pills.
- 33:01SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but that's yeah, that's kind of uh uh that's all Emma wanted.
- 33:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's all she wanted.
- 33:11SPEAKER_00: So Ellie tells her to take one of these right away and take another one in a couple hours, you know, as you need to so you get over what what's ailing you here.
- 33:26SPEAKER_00: And uh but but but first uh Emma first chastises her or what are you doing here?
- 33:34SPEAKER_00: And yeah.
- 33:37SPEAKER_00: So she's she's not happy to see her, but then the things turn around when she she finds out, oh, she brought my pills, and she's she's happy.
- 33:47SPEAKER_02: She's yeah, she's really likes uh Ellie at that point.
- 33:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's like my my best friend has come to my side all of a sudden, and uh so yeah, things things start to turn around for Emma almost immediately, which is pretty funny too.
- 34:08SPEAKER_00: She's feeling a lot better as soon as she takes the pill.
- 34:12SPEAKER_02: And then Ellie's gotta get back to the store.
- 34:16SPEAKER_02: And uh and Andy, I was glad uh I mean you know what's gonna happen, but it's it's you know something you it should happen is uh he runs after Ellie to talk to her, especially the way they had ended their last encounter.
- 34:31SPEAKER_00: Oh, absolutely, absolutely, and he does, and they have this conversation outside the house where Ellie explains that oh they're nothing but sugar pills, Sheriff Taylor.
- 34:45SPEAKER_00: They have no medicinal properties at all, it's all in her head.
- 34:52SPEAKER_02: Yeah, Uncle Fred let her know that that's what he would give her, and that's why he didn't require a prescription, and and uh she said she became the town villain.
- 35:04SPEAKER_02: I guess everybody was going in the the pharmacy and letting her have it.
- 35:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah, everybody had something to say about it, so she felt like she had to do something.
- 35:16SPEAKER_00: And funny little line from Andy after he hears all that, and he said, Yeah, I did think 10 cents was awful cheap for a miracle drug.
- 35:26SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 35:28SPEAKER_00: Uh so so yeah, that it seems like there uh it was sort of the turnaround or the the climax for everything.
- 35:38SPEAKER_00: So for Emma, but also for kind of turning around how things sat between Ellie and Andy.
- 35:47SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and then and Andy's ready to write a ticket.
- 35:50SPEAKER_02: Oh that's something Barney would normally do.
- 35:52SPEAKER_02: You don't usually see Andy pull out the uh the the uh pad to write a ticket.
- 35:58SPEAKER_00: To write a ticket.
- 35:59SPEAKER_00: But he said, yeah, they're breaking the law parked right in front of that fire plug, and uh and then so she goes on the offensive about well, what if they ran out of gas, or what if they didn't see the hydrant there and all this and that, and he finally relents and says, Well, I guess she convinced me, and and then I'm gonna feel gen I'm feeling generous, and I'm gonna let it go this time.
- 36:27SPEAKER_00: And she she then gets inside the car and drives off.
- 36:33SPEAKER_02: Yes, that was a nice touch.
- 36:36SPEAKER_02: That was her car the whole time.
- 36:38SPEAKER_02: I love it.
- 36:40SPEAKER_00: Me too.
- 36:41SPEAKER_00: That was that was just awesome.
- 36:43SPEAKER_00: That was awesome.
- 36:44SPEAKER_00: And then we we get our little last taste at the very end in the epilogue.
- 36:50SPEAKER_00: Outside uh the drugstore out on the street, Andy sees Ellie again.
- 36:57SPEAKER_02: And he's telling her that Emma, Emma uh is sick, and and and he she doesn't and Ellie's telling her that those it's no, those those pills, though she's she it's all in her mind, it's all in her head.
- 37:14SPEAKER_00: Exactly, exactly.
- 37:16SPEAKER_00: But Andy goes on to say, well, it's not in her head exactly, it's more in her stomach.
- 37:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 37:23SPEAKER_00: She ate all that food.
- 37:25SPEAKER_00: Ate all that food.
- 37:27SPEAKER_00: And yeah, you could imagine looking at that spread that was on her table in her house.
- 37:32SPEAKER_00: If she ate even a quarter of that, she'd she would just be laid out.
- 37:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 37:40SPEAKER_00: So uh good way to wrap everything up there at the end.
- 37:45SPEAKER_02: And and once that ends, our our fictional audience applauds again.
- 37:51SPEAKER_02: So we we have all that applause.
- 37:56SPEAKER_02: I love it.
- 37:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah, even when I was watching the show with my wife, she she commented on that uh about the audience, and I I hadn't even said anything to her, and she thought that was kind of interesting.
- 38:12SPEAKER_00: And coming up next is going to be Irresistible Andy is the title for the next episode.
- 38:19SPEAKER_02: I love that title.
- 38:20SPEAKER_02: That makes you think a lot of things.
- 38:23SPEAKER_00: It sure does.
- 38:24SPEAKER_00: It's it's kind of a good tease, uh good way for us to wrap things up today, too.
- 38:30SPEAKER_00: That I wonder what we're gonna see next time.
- 38:33SPEAKER_00: And how how this uh new potential love interest in town in Ellie Walker is going to have an effect on Andy.
- 38:45SPEAKER_02: Well, thanks.
- 38:46SPEAKER_02: Thanks, Tim.
- 38:47SPEAKER_02: Thanks everyone for listening, and see you next time, everyone.
