- 0:48[SPEAKER_01]: Hey everybody Brian Smith here with the item team series and your daily influence and today we're going to talk about self discipline and
- 0:59[SPEAKER_01]: really going to get specific to the difference between discipline and motivation and why execution is really I wouldn't call it a new leadership skill but it is but it requires us to get tactical as leaders so that's really what I want to talk about today because you know while motivation is powerful it can be amazingly
- 1:22[SPEAKER_01]: unreliable, it can be interrupted, it can wane, it spikes, it fades and oftentimes it can't even be scheduled as a lot of outside influences can get in the way of motivation.
- 1:35[SPEAKER_01]: In 26, I think leaders who are winning aren't going to be the most inspirational.
- 1:41[SPEAKER_01]: They're going to be the most disciplined and they don't really rely on energy or urgency or heroics.
- 1:48[SPEAKER_01]: They're going to find that relying on
- 1:51[SPEAKER_01]: cadence and clarity is what's going to get them moving towards those milestones that they hope to reach this year.
- 1:59[SPEAKER_01]: And so that means today I want to talk about why execution has become lead to finding leadership skill and why motivation is no longer enough and how disciplined systems like smart management can create progress even when people are tired, they're distracted
- 2:21[SPEAKER_01]: Motivation starts things.
- 2:23[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it gets us going.
- 2:25[SPEAKER_01]: It motivates us to really take that first step and oftentimes many steps afterwards, but you know what really gets us to the finish line is the discipline and.
- 2:36[SPEAKER_01]: you know motivations and emotional thing and discipline is operational and most organizations that we deal with and even sometimes within our own we don't fail because people don't care we fail because caring isn't structured you know when motivation dips progress can stall unless discipline is already in place something to support us.
- 2:59[SPEAKER_01]: And so discipline doesn't replace the passion.
- 3:02[SPEAKER_01]: It protects progress when passion fades.
- 3:06[SPEAKER_01]: And that's really important as a leader.
- 3:09[SPEAKER_01]: And in us conveying and getting that into our organizations on a very regular basis.
- 3:17[SPEAKER_01]: Because execution failure is usually structural, not personal.
- 3:22[SPEAKER_01]: When leaders say people aren't following through, we keep dropping the balls and nothing is sticking.
- 3:29[SPEAKER_01]: That's rarely a people problem.
- 3:31[SPEAKER_01]: It's usually a design problem.
- 3:33[SPEAKER_01]: What I mean by that is that whatever the project was, it was likely not designed well.
- 3:39[SPEAKER_01]: It didn't have the structure.
- 3:41[SPEAKER_01]: It didn't have the clarity.
- 3:42[SPEAKER_01]: It didn't have what was needed to be understood.
- 3:46[SPEAKER_01]: Unclear ownership, vague timelines, missing measures.
- 3:51[SPEAKER_01]: These quietly sabotage execution and discipline exposes these gaps early.
- 3:58[SPEAKER_01]: usually before frustration turns personal.
- 4:02[SPEAKER_01]: Discipline also reduces the need for heroics in our organizations.
- 4:07[SPEAKER_01]: If success depends on someone stepping up, but then the system's broken.
- 4:13[SPEAKER_01]: Discipline execution means work has an owner.
- 4:18[SPEAKER_01]: When work has an owner, there's clarity in when things need to be done, how things need to be done.
- 4:24[SPEAKER_01]: what to be expected.
- 4:25[SPEAKER_01]: That's both internally and in a team environment.
- 4:29[SPEAKER_01]: Progress also becomes visible.
- 4:31[SPEAKER_01]: People know where they're going.
- 4:33[SPEAKER_01]: They know what those milestones are.
- 4:35[SPEAKER_01]: And check-ins are routine.
- 4:37[SPEAKER_01]: They're not reactive.
- 4:38[SPEAKER_01]: They're not when something gets missed.
- 4:40[SPEAKER_01]: We all said are scrambling to find out where we're at.
- 4:44[SPEAKER_01]: When discipline exists,
- 4:46[SPEAKER_01]: leadership stops rescuing the organization or the project or the milestones and starts managing forward in a proactive and productive way.
- 4:57[SPEAKER_01]: One thing I love about smart is that it's really not motivation.
- 5:02[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, it motivates me.
- 5:03[SPEAKER_01]: Don't get me wrong.
- 5:05[SPEAKER_01]: Having a system that we've
- 5:07[SPEAKER_01]: appended and designed to support not just the framework, but our behavior characteristics is pretty motivating for me and for most of us that live in a smart environment, but it wasn't designed to be a motivation.
- 5:21[SPEAKER_01]: It's a management discipline.
- 5:24[SPEAKER_01]: Smart isn't about setting better goals.
- 5:27[SPEAKER_01]: It's about sustaining movement towards
- 5:29[SPEAKER_01]: continuous improvement.
- 5:31[SPEAKER_01]: Specifics remove ambiguity.
- 5:34[SPEAKER_01]: Measurement removes emotion and timing creates rhythm, rhythm, and a cadence that we can get into and understand and move with in a comfortable way.
- 5:45[SPEAKER_01]: When smartest practice is a discipline, execution becomes predictable and trust increases across the entire team.
- 5:54[SPEAKER_01]: Look, discipline creates calm, also, in uncertain times, and we are most definitely living in some uncertain times for a lot of us.
- 6:04[SPEAKER_01]: We see this across all business sectors, across many different levels of individual.
- 6:11[SPEAKER_01]: And it's oftentimes really difficult to help people through that.
- 6:17[SPEAKER_01]: But when we can give them something that they're going to rely on, like smart management, these undisciplined environments, eliminate what we often see, which is a noisy motivation,
- 6:32[SPEAKER_01]: discipline gets us quiet.
- 6:34[SPEAKER_01]: Clear structure can lower anxiety.
- 6:37[SPEAKER_01]: It can restore confidence, and it gives people something solid to leave on.
- 6:42[SPEAKER_01]: Even when conditions change and we get thrown current balls along the way, we have something to fall back into, something to trust and something that we know has carried us through time and time again and for us.
- 6:54[SPEAKER_01]: We're getting close to being able to say that for 30 years.
- 6:58[SPEAKER_01]: So it's not rigidity.
- 7:00[SPEAKER_01]: It's not so much structure.
- 7:02[SPEAKER_01]: It's in bases.
- 7:03[SPEAKER_01]: It's leadership maturity and it's growth for our teams as we move through the process of applying smart to our day-to-day games.
- 7:12[SPEAKER_01]: Look, motivation will always matter.
- 7:15[SPEAKER_01]: But it can't carry an organization.
- 7:18[SPEAKER_01]: Discipline is what allows leadership to scale.
- 7:24[SPEAKER_01]: progress to continue without constant pressure.
- 7:27[SPEAKER_01]: If execution feels heavy right now, don't ask for more effort.
- 7:31[SPEAKER_01]: Ask whether the structure is strong enough to support it.
- 7:35[SPEAKER_01]: Because 2026, it's going to be a year where leadership isn't about pushing harder.
- 7:41[SPEAKER_01]: It's about designing systems that move forward even when on a energy runs low and trust me folks energy is going to run low this year as we get challenged as we evolve and work through these challenges that we're facing.
- 7:55[SPEAKER_01]: Look, I hope that you enjoyed today's episode about the difference we motivation and the discipline that we have as leadership and I hope you'll join us again in a future episode of Daily Influence.
- 8:08[SPEAKER_01]: Have a great day.
