Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: So the Israeli Defense Force is reporting right now that
- 0:03Speaker 1: rockets are being filed, missiles are being fired from Iran
- 0:08Speaker 1: into Israel being intercepted by the Iron Dome.
- 0:12Speaker 2: The skies above us are lighting up. We are seeing
- 0:16Speaker 2: Israeli Iron Dome interceptors and they appear to be shooting
- 0:21Speaker 2: down some of these missiles as they streak over the
- 0:24Speaker 2: skies of northern Israel.
- 0:27Speaker 1: James mackenzie is the REUCES Bureau chief for Israel and Palestine.
- 0:30Speaker 1: He's with US Live this morning. James, Welcome to the show. Hello,
- 0:36Speaker 1: tell me what's happening at the moment.
- 0:39Speaker 3: Well, yes, as you're hearing a missile barrow has been
- 0:45Speaker 3: going on, the sirens sounding warning alerts being sent out
- 0:48Speaker 3: to people's mobile phones to take cover and go to
- 0:51Speaker 3: the shelters. This is, you know, the second attack by Iran,
- 1:00Speaker 3: an early one in April, and this is you know,
- 1:03Speaker 3: happening in the moment. It's a little difficult to tell
- 1:06Speaker 3: exactly what the impact has been. Certainly we can hear booms,
- 1:09Speaker 3: which are the typical when the when the aerial defense
- 1:12Speaker 3: system hits these missiles. You know, we can hear the
- 1:15Speaker 3: sirens and you know, we're really just sort of waiting
- 1:19Speaker 3: to see how it's all in a playout.
- 1:22Speaker 1: Yeah, as you say, it is, it is early days,
- 1:24Speaker 1: has only just happened in the last sort of ten
- 1:26Speaker 1: to fifteen minutes it started. But how big of a
- 1:29Speaker 1: deal is it given that that you know, Iran has
- 1:32Speaker 1: done this before in April, as you said, most of
- 1:34Speaker 1: the missiles were intercepted.
- 1:38Speaker 3: Well, it's a very big deal in a sense, almost
- 1:42Speaker 3: regardless of whether the you know, of how successful the
- 1:45Speaker 3: aerial defense system is, because you know, the first the
- 1:51Speaker 3: first time has happened, not no significant damage was or
- 1:57Speaker 3: very little significant damage was caused, and you know, they
- 2:01Speaker 3: seem to be a sort of tacit agreement to let
- 2:03Speaker 3: it slide as well, you know, struck back also in
- 2:07Speaker 3: a kind of limited way. But I think if it
- 2:09Speaker 3: happens again, then mistakes are definitely raised. We've already seen,
- 2:14Speaker 3: you know, really sharp up together essentially the beginning of
- 2:16Speaker 3: war in Lebanon, you know, very very heavy is rarely
- 2:21Speaker 3: air strikes. This morning, a ground incursion by commandos. He
- 2:26Speaker 3: the silent background is now and I think you know
- 2:31Speaker 3: this is you know, a very potentially a very dangerous
- 2:36Speaker 3: step up from that. You know, We're gonna have to
- 2:41Speaker 3: see what what they decided to do. But you know,
- 2:44Speaker 3: I think this is definitely a very serious step.
- 2:47Speaker 1: James, Where are you right now?
- 2:51Speaker 3: I'm in our office in Jerusalem where you can maybe
- 2:56Speaker 3: hear the hear the siren.
- 2:58Speaker 1: Yeah, are you not in a bombshell or are you
- 3:01Speaker 1: just in your office?
- 3:03Speaker 3: Well, we have we have a we have a bombshell,
- 3:05Speaker 3: so that.
- 3:05Speaker 1: You know, And and can you tell me do you
- 3:10Speaker 1: think Israel is feeling I don't know if emboldened is
- 3:14Speaker 1: the right word to respond, but after obviously taking out
- 3:17Speaker 1: in israela and you know, going after his Billa, do
- 3:21Speaker 1: you think that perhaps Israel's response to Iran, you know,
- 3:26Speaker 1: to these attacks might be stronger, might be different.
- 3:30Speaker 3: I think so. I mean it does seem, you know
- 3:32Speaker 3: that they were for a long time as well as
- 3:35Speaker 3: been kind of on the back foot over the you know,
- 3:38Speaker 3: the very the very critical you know, the world reaction
- 3:44Speaker 3: to you know, the campaign in Gaza with you know,
- 3:47Speaker 3: which is caused these these these huge number of casualties
- 3:50Speaker 3: can cause so much damage. I think you know that
- 3:53Speaker 3: that the sort of public move has been very much
- 3:58Speaker 3: you know, from the Israeli point of view, the scessful
- 4:01Speaker 3: operations that have been having in the assassination of all
- 4:06Speaker 3: these essentially decapitation of the Edible movement and the leader
- 4:14Speaker 3: a raft of other and you know, I think.
- 4:22Speaker 1: I think we might be losing James.
- 4:24Speaker 3: There.
- 4:24Speaker 1: That is the voice of James mackenzie. He's the Reuters
- 4:26Speaker 1: bureau chief for Israel and Palestine, currently sheltering in a
- 4:31Speaker 1: bomb shelter inside the Router's office in Jerusalem, talking to
- 4:34Speaker 1: us there. The sirens you can hear in the background
- 4:37Speaker 1: are air sirens from warning of other imminent or current
- 4:43Speaker 1: strike from Iran. We're hearing from the Israeli Defense Force
- 4:48Speaker 1: that at least one hundred missiles have been launched just
- 4:51Speaker 1: in the last ten to fifteen minutes from Iran into Israel.
