- 0:00Speaker 1: Is The nation heads into the Memorial Day weekend with
- 0:02Speaker 1: its commander in chief seemingly not in a solemn or
- 0:05Speaker 1: reflective mood, but perhaps a more vengeful one. Today, in
- 0:09Speaker 1: the Oval Office, the President was asked about his administration's
- 0:11Speaker 1: latest attack on Harvard University. Just yesterday, the Department of
- 0:15Speaker 1: Homeland Security announced they were revoking the school's ability to
- 0:18Speaker 1: enroll foreign students.
- 0:21Speaker 2: Are you considering stopping at other universities besides Harvard from
- 0:24Speaker 2: accepting forums.
- 0:25Speaker 3: Well, we'll take it a look at a lot of things.
- 0:26Speaker 3: And as you know, billions of dollars has been paid
- 0:31Speaker 3: to Harvard. How ridiculous is that billions? And they have
- 0:35Speaker 3: fifty two billion dollars as an endowment. They have fifty
- 0:38Speaker 3: two billion dollars, and this country's paying billions and billions
- 0:43Speaker 3: of dollars and then give student loans and they have
- 0:45Speaker 3: to pay back the loans.
- 0:46Speaker 4: So Harvard's going to.
- 0:47Speaker 3: Have to change his ways episode or some other.
- 0:53Speaker 1: Well, Harvard is, of course, not the only university that's
- 0:55Speaker 1: been targeted by the Trump administration, or even the only
- 0:57Speaker 1: university targeted. Yesterday, the Department of Health and Human Services
- 1:01Speaker 1: accused Columbia violating federal civil rights law by acting with
- 1:06Speaker 1: what they call deliberate indifference toward harassment of Jewish students
- 1:09Speaker 1: on campus since the October seventh attacks. It caps off
- 1:12Speaker 1: a very busy week for the President those in his
- 1:14Speaker 1: administration regards to investigations. Peter Baker, chief White House correspondent
- 1:18Speaker 1: for The New York Time, posted on x a list of.
- 1:21Speaker 4: Those who were, as he wrote, charged.
- 1:23Speaker 1: Investigated, or threatened with investigation by Trump or his team
- 1:26Speaker 1: just in recent days. Here's his list, Letitia James, Andrew Cuomo,
- 1:31Speaker 1: Lamonica mc iver, Democratic Member of Congress, Kamala Harris, Bruce Springsteen,
- 1:35Speaker 1: Beyonce Bono, Oprah Winfrey, James Comy, unnamed treasonist. Biden aids
- 1:40Speaker 1: the city of Chicago and the Kennedy Center. As for Harvard, DHS,
- 1:44Speaker 1: Secretary of Christy nomanown she was essentially banning these students
- 1:47Speaker 1: from attending after she says the university failed to hand
- 1:50Speaker 1: over five years of records on international students, specifying they
- 1:54Speaker 1: should include any disciplinary actions as well as audio and
- 1:58Speaker 1: video footage of any protest AX activity the students participated in.
- 2:02Speaker 1: Harvard says they complied with the record's request. Today, the
- 2:05Speaker 1: university filed student in federal court. They argued it was
- 2:08Speaker 1: clear retaliation for Harvard exercising its First Amendment rights to
- 2:12Speaker 1: reject the government's demands to control Harvard's governance, curriculum, and
- 2:16Speaker 1: the ideology of its faculty in students now, the the
- 2:20Speaker 1: suit went on to say, with the stroke of a pen,
- 2:22Speaker 1: the government has sought to erase a quarter of Harvard's
- 2:25Speaker 1: student body. Foreign students do make up twenty seven percent
- 2:28Speaker 1: of Harvard's enrollment this year. Even for a school with
- 2:31Speaker 1: an endowment as large as Harvard's, potentially losing such a
- 2:35Speaker 1: massive part of its students is no small threat. There
- 2:37Speaker 1: are also concerns at other universities that whatever happens, it'll
- 2:40Speaker 1: lead to a chilling effect that the best and brightest
- 2:43Speaker 1: students from around the world will not want a risk
- 2:45Speaker 1: coming to any American institution for fear of their lives
- 2:48Speaker 1: and their studies could be upended by a mercurial administration.
- 2:52Speaker 1: This is just the latest financial blow dealt to Harvard
- 2:55Speaker 1: by the Trump administration. The White House already froze more
- 2:58Speaker 1: than two point six billion dollars in federal grants and contracts,
- 3:01Speaker 1: and the IRIS is making plans to revoke Harvard's tax
- 3:04Speaker 1: exempt status.
- 3:05Speaker 4: Late today some breaking news in the case, a.
- 3:07Speaker 1: Federal judge granted a reprieve, temporarily halting the ban on
- 3:11Speaker 1: foreign students, saying the school quote will sustain immediate and
- 3:15Speaker 1: irreparable injury if the governments were allowed to revoke the
- 3:18Speaker 1: school's certification before the court could consider the matter.
- 3:21Speaker 4: The hearing is set for next week.
- 3:23Speaker 1: When I check in with Jason Carroll, who's in Cambridge,
- 3:25Speaker 1: Massachusetts right now, near Harvard University, you spoke some international students.
- 3:29Speaker 5: What do they tell you, Jason, Well, certainly I understand
- 3:33Speaker 5: there's a lot of uncertainty here on campus, a lot
- 3:36Speaker 5: of unease. These students that we spoke to really feel
- 3:39Speaker 5: as though this is not just an attack on Harvard.
- 3:42Speaker 5: They feel like this is an attack generally on higher education,
- 3:46Speaker 5: and the international students here basically feel as though they're
- 3:48Speaker 5: just being caught.
- 3:49Speaker 4: In the middle of it all.
- 3:53Speaker 6: For many international students at Harvard, being accepted in coming
- 3:56Speaker 6: here is a dream come true, a dream many now
- 4:00Speaker 6: fear is coming to an end.
- 4:02Speaker 7: I came to this place because I love this country,
- 4:04Speaker 7: and I love the values that it stands for, and
- 4:07Speaker 7: it's openness, to people of different backgrounds, and I truly
- 4:10Speaker 7: believe that that is still America. But right now Trump
- 4:14Speaker 7: is attacking all of those values. I'm in limbo, and
- 4:17Speaker 7: you know the government has showed its hand here, and
- 4:19Speaker 7: it's showed to what lengths it is willing to go.
- 4:21Speaker 6: Vic Karen, students like him are now faced with big decisions.
- 4:24Speaker 6: Do they stay and hope the courts permanently block the
- 4:28Speaker 6: Trump administration's order banning Harvard from admitting international students, or
- 4:33Speaker 6: not take the risk and leave.
- 4:36Speaker 4: Right now, we are not shown. No one is with
- 4:38Speaker 4: We're legally allowed in the US or not.
- 4:42Speaker 6: Abdellas idcl is Harvard's student Boddy President, and a sophomore
- 4:47Speaker 6: studying applied mathematics.
- 4:49Speaker 5: Do you feel confident that you will be able to
- 4:52Speaker 5: come back and study in the fall.
- 4:55Speaker 4: Not at all, not even close. I'm not confident.
- 4:58Speaker 6: About thatdministration says its efforts are in part an effort
- 5:02Speaker 6: to get Harvard to do more to stop anti Semitism
- 5:06Speaker 6: on campus. This international student from Israel says while the
- 5:10Speaker 6: university could take more action, she does not believe the
- 5:14Speaker 6: Trump administration's decisions are helping.
- 5:17Speaker 8: This specific measure targets a population that is not actually
- 5:23Speaker 8: in position to fight any of it, and that is
- 5:28Speaker 8: also going to include, among others, Jewish and Israeli students
- 5:33Speaker 8: who have been experiencing this anti semitism and hostile environment
- 5:37Speaker 8: for the past two years and now are also experiencing this.
- 5:41Speaker 4: I'm mess.
- 5:42Speaker 6: Harvard professor Ryan Eno says, even if the courts ultimately
- 5:46Speaker 6: decide in Harvard's favor, the damage may already be done.
- 5:50Speaker 2: I am not sure I can look to a student
- 5:53Speaker 2: now at a straight face and say I can guarantee
- 5:55Speaker 2: what's going to be in the future for you. And
- 5:57Speaker 2: that's a really sad thing.
- 6:00Speaker 4: And Anderson.
- 6:01Speaker 5: One other point that the professor wanted to make is
- 6:04Speaker 5: he says, oftentimes there are so many of these students
- 6:06Speaker 5: who come to him looking for advice. These international students
- 6:09Speaker 5: now have been coming to him asking what they should do,
- 6:12Speaker 5: what they should do, And he told me, he said, look,
- 6:14Speaker 5: I can't look at them straight at the eye, straight
- 6:16Speaker 5: in the eye, with confidence and tell them specifically what
- 6:19Speaker 5: their next step should be.
- 6:20Speaker 4: Thanks Cheryl, thanks very much.
- 6:22Speaker 1: Want to get perspective out from Massas Congressman Jake Auchincloss,
- 6:25Speaker 1: who's also a Harvard alumnus, so Congressman the White House
- 6:27Speaker 1: has Enrolling foreign students is a privilege, not a right.
- 6:30Speaker 2: What do you say, Anderson, Good evening, Thanks for having
- 6:35Speaker 2: me on. I think Donald Trump is behaving just like
- 6:40Speaker 2: the unhinged anti Israel campus protesters that he's claiming. He opposes.
- 6:45Speaker 2: He's performative, he's illogical, he's cruel, and he's doing nothing
- 6:50Speaker 2: to help address anti Semitism on campus. Bullying students from Nigeria,
- 6:56Speaker 2: from China, from Europe does not help students from Israel.
- 7:01Speaker 1: You were actually critical of Harvard's for some of their
- 7:05Speaker 1: response to protests. DHS says it took this action because
- 7:10Speaker 1: Harvard didn't sufficiently respond to its demand for information about
- 7:14Speaker 1: every student who's there on a visa. The university said
- 7:16Speaker 1: it did provide that information and says that the government's
- 7:19Speaker 1: real mode of his retribution from the ideologicals stemming from
- 7:22Speaker 1: ideological demands it made to the school in April to
- 7:26Speaker 1: ban DEI initiatives and restrict campus protests.
- 7:29Speaker 4: What do you think is at the heart of this.
- 7:34Speaker 2: I am a ferocious critic of how Harvard responded to
- 7:36Speaker 2: October seventh. There's a direct line from the anti Semitism
- 7:41Speaker 2: that was allowed to flourish on Harvard and other elite campuses,
- 7:44Speaker 2: and the type of anti Semitic violence that we saw
- 7:47Speaker 2: two days ago in Washington, d C. Anti Semitic words
- 7:50Speaker 2: do become anti Semitic murders, and the inability of progressives
- 7:56Speaker 2: to check and condemn that anti semitism on the lad
- 8:00Speaker 2: left has allowed these tragedies to unfurl, whether at Governor
- 8:04Speaker 2: Shapiro's house or elsewhere. So I remain very critical of
- 8:07Speaker 2: progressive institutions that won't check anti semitism on the left.
- 8:10Speaker 2: But MAGA is not the organization or the movement that's
- 8:16Speaker 2: going to address that. I mean, the hypocrisy on the
- 8:19Speaker 2: hard right is just as galling. You've got Tucker Carlson
- 8:23Speaker 2: and others who are courting Holocaust denials. You've got the
- 8:26Speaker 2: Republicans on the same night that these two young Jews
- 8:32Speaker 2: were gunned down in Washington, DC, voting to subsidize the
- 8:35Speaker 2: purchase of silencers for pistols. So hard right extreme left,
- 8:40Speaker 2: neither side is equipped to help build out a liberal
- 8:44Speaker 2: truth seeking culture on these campuses, which is what Harvard needs.
- 8:47Speaker 1: Well, what do you think the impact of getting rid
- 8:51Speaker 1: of I mean, if it happens, getting rid of all
- 8:53Speaker 1: the foreign students, which is twenty seven percent of the
- 8:56Speaker 1: student body this year, not just has on you universities
- 9:00Speaker 1: but also on American businesses. I mean, these are often
- 9:04Speaker 1: the best and the brightest students from around the world
- 9:06Speaker 1: who will then go on to work for American companies
- 9:09Speaker 1: or tech companies. Here doing cutting edge research, cutting edge innovation.
- 9:17Speaker 2: Without doubt, Anderson high schooled immigration to our universities is
- 9:21Speaker 2: an economic boon. I'll give you one example of that.
- 9:25Speaker 2: Everyone's talking about generative AI and the impact of AI.
- 9:29Speaker 2: The twenty seventeen paper Attention Is All You Need was
- 9:32Speaker 2: a seminal piece of research that really launched this new
- 9:35Speaker 2: AI era that we're in. There were eight authors on
- 9:38Speaker 2: that paper, seven of them Anderson, were immigrants, and the
- 9:42Speaker 2: eighth was the grandson of refugees. The cutting edge research
- 9:45Speaker 2: that this country does is done with an accent.
- 9:49Speaker 1: Do you think that President's allies just want to be
- 9:51Speaker 1: able to say that they brought Harvard.
- 9:53Speaker 4: To its knees.
- 9:54Speaker 1: I mean it's a world famous, wealthy, liberal leaning institution
- 9:57Speaker 1: in New England. Is it kind of the ultimate target?
- 10:01Speaker 2: Yes, This is about culture, not about politics. Or policy.
- 10:04Speaker 2: They're attacking Harvard for the same reason they're attacking the
- 10:07Speaker 2: National Institutes of Health, they're NATO or National Public Radio.
- 10:10Speaker 2: They view these various institutions, which are at the commanding
- 10:14Speaker 2: heights of Western culture, as having been taken over by leftists,
- 10:19Speaker 2: and so they're launching guerilla warfare against these institutions. And
- 10:22Speaker 2: our job is to defend these institutions without defending the
- 10:27Speaker 2: status quo. We can say that we believe in academic
- 10:30Speaker 2: freedom and the freedom of expression on university campuses without
- 10:35Speaker 2: having to reflexively defend everything that happened on these campuses,
- 10:37Speaker 2: because they do need to fix themselves, and they can,
- 10:41Speaker 2: but we are not going to allow Donald Trump to
- 10:44Speaker 2: use them as a punching bag for his own political ends.
- 10:47Speaker 4: Yeah, Keresman, Jay Auchincloss, I appreciate your time. Thank you,
