- 0:05Speaker 1: Hey everyone, It's Alex S. Garrett, host of One Look
- 0:07Speaker 1: Up with Alex Garrett aka One Look Up.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Alex.
- 0:10Speaker 1: Excited to have you for a year thirteen of this podcast.
- 0:13Speaker 2: We've gotten through.
- 0:14Speaker 1: Twelve amazing years thanks to you. Here's to lucky thirteen.
- 0:20Speaker 1: All right, well back here on Terminello's Take with my friend,
- 0:24Speaker 1: my buddy, lou Terminello. Welcome back. Firstly, how are you feeling.
- 0:29Speaker 1: Are we're gonna set the gold standard this weekend or
- 0:30Speaker 1: what louis?
- 0:33Speaker 2: Hi? Alex, good morning, and thanks for having me as always, Yeah,
- 0:39Speaker 2: I hope so, I hope we do set the gold
- 0:41Speaker 2: standard this weekend. And obviously what we're talking about is
- 0:45Speaker 2: USA Hockey Team USA VERSUS Team Canada tomorrow morning at
- 0:50Speaker 2: a ten Eastern time. It's going to be a hell
- 0:54Speaker 2: of a game. These are the two best teams in
- 0:56Speaker 2: the tournament. This is the best United States a national
- 1:02Speaker 2: team Olympic team in any international tournament ever. I'm looking
- 1:07Speaker 2: forward to it, I really am, Alex.
- 1:10Speaker 1: Let's talk about why they're you know, they're at this level.
- 1:15Speaker 1: I mean I almost think they are stronger than they
- 1:17Speaker 1: were fifteen sixteen years ago. I mean, this is the
- 1:19Speaker 1: strongest team USA. I've seen even rather doubt even since
- 1:23Speaker 1: last year. I don't know what improvement they made, but
- 1:25Speaker 1: they added some guys it feels like since last year even.
- 1:28Speaker 2: Well, the one guy who was not there in Four Nations,
- 1:31Speaker 2: who was injured, who got injured just before the tournament.
- 1:34Speaker 2: And in my opinion, you can argue whether it's Austin
- 1:37Speaker 2: Matthews or Quinn Ughes, who's the best American player currently
- 1:43Speaker 2: in the National Hockey League. Quinn News was not in
- 1:46Speaker 2: Four Nations last year. If Quinn News wasn't Four Nations,
- 1:50Speaker 2: they might have won that gold medal game against Canada.
- 1:54Speaker 2: And he's been the best United States player. He controls
- 1:58Speaker 2: the game, as US head coach Mike Sullivan says, he's
- 2:04Speaker 2: a magical player. And he is a magical player, and
- 2:09Speaker 2: that's one of the reasons why this team is better
- 2:11Speaker 2: than last you see, and compared to twenty ten, they're
- 2:15Speaker 2: a level better this team, which.
- 2:18Speaker 1: To me, I'm looking at it as well. See, this
- 2:20Speaker 1: should inspire Drey. If you give Mike Sullivan's team to coach,
- 2:24Speaker 1: he'll actually coach. Well, I mean, look what he's been
- 2:26Speaker 1: doing with Team USA.
- 2:28Speaker 2: There's there's no doubt about it. You need uh. As
- 2:32Speaker 2: great a coach as any in any sport might be.
- 2:35Speaker 2: You do need uh, you do need personnel, and this
- 2:39Speaker 2: is this team is excellent. They have depth, they have speed.
- 2:46Speaker 2: Jack Hughes is playing great. Quinn's brother, he's you know,
- 2:49Speaker 2: he's been a tremendous player for them. Tate Thompson, who
- 2:53Speaker 2: was not.
- 2:53Speaker 1: On that Funny, isn't it funny because we were all
- 2:56Speaker 1: in the traces area. Oh my god, Jack Hugh zac
- 2:59Speaker 1: us yet so by the way, he's Quinn's brother, Like,
- 3:01Speaker 1: it's just funny the way you worded that.
- 3:06Speaker 2: Well, he's playing great, obviously, we know obvious when he's healthy,
- 3:11Speaker 2: he's as good as there there is. And you know,
- 3:17Speaker 2: playing on a very effective line with the Detroit Red Wings.
- 3:24Speaker 2: Dylan Larkin, who's been great in this tournament along with you.
- 3:28Speaker 2: They moved to us to to Wane. He's a natural center,
- 3:31Speaker 2: he's played wing and he's played very well. And Cage Thompson,
- 3:34Speaker 2: who got hurt in the second period of the wind
- 3:38Speaker 2: yesterday against Slovakia. Hopefully he's ready to go tomorrow morning.
- 3:45Speaker 2: They they did, of course, as in hockey, you know,
- 3:47Speaker 2: they don't identify most injuries, but hopefully he's he's ready
- 3:53Speaker 2: to go.
- 3:54Speaker 1: But that was about the guy who scored the first
- 3:57Speaker 1: goal at Larkin. I mean, is he because I feel
- 3:59Speaker 1: like he's the guy that we don't really hear about
- 4:00Speaker 1: often in the NHL season.
- 4:03Speaker 2: He's a star. He's part of the rebirth of the
- 4:06Speaker 2: Detroit Red Wings, who look like they're gonna be back
- 4:09Speaker 2: in the playoffs this year. He's fast. The United States
- 4:12Speaker 2: team is fast, and one of the keys tomorrow is
- 4:15Speaker 2: going to be how quickly they move the puck and
- 4:20Speaker 2: get the puck up to their forwards. I think they're
- 4:22Speaker 2: going to be able to do that. They have good
- 4:24Speaker 2: team speed. You have to win every board battle. And
- 4:29Speaker 2: the other thing is yesterday when the game was still
- 4:32Speaker 2: too nothing US over Slovakia, they took four penalties the
- 4:38Speaker 2: United States. You cannot do that against the Canadian Olympic team.
- 4:44Speaker 2: They will bury you. And the game winning goal yesterday
- 4:48Speaker 2: for Canada versus Finland was a power play goal and
- 4:55Speaker 2: with thirty five seconds ago alex Finland when they took
- 4:59Speaker 2: the tow lead. And I'm watching this game and no
- 5:03Speaker 2: team plays better with the lead, whether it's the Olympics,
- 5:08Speaker 2: whether it's the World Championships, whatever international tournament it is.
- 5:14Speaker 2: No team plays better with the lead and goes into
- 5:17Speaker 2: a bubble better than Finland. But Finland went into the
- 5:20Speaker 2: bumble way too early in the second period yesterday, and
- 5:23Speaker 2: they were trying to protect the lead. They were not
- 5:27Speaker 2: doing anything offensively and by the time they tried to
- 5:33Speaker 2: it was too late. They went. They went into Katie
- 5:37Speaker 2: bar the door, as the old saying goes protection way
- 5:41Speaker 2: too early, and it basically cost them the game. They
- 5:44Speaker 2: almost got away with it, but.
- 5:48Speaker 1: It really asked you this. So when I record that
- 5:52Speaker 1: little bit about the elite nature of biological brotherhood in
- 5:58Speaker 1: the USA hockey world since nineteen twenty, Philand was up
- 6:01Speaker 1: to nothing and they obviously could not hold Canada and
- 6:05Speaker 1: they lose. Let's say US goes up by that margin.
- 6:09Speaker 1: What do they have to do to hold down Canada
- 6:11Speaker 1: and not let them come back.
- 6:12Speaker 2: Well, the one thing they have to do, Alex is
- 6:15Speaker 2: they have to continue to play smart but aggressively. Because
- 6:20Speaker 2: the one thing watching Canadian national teams over the years,
- 6:25Speaker 2: whether it's in Canada Cup, Four Nations, Olympics, World Championships,
- 6:30Speaker 2: whatever it is, you have to drive a stake through
- 6:34Speaker 2: the Canadian heart to win. They don't give up when
- 6:38Speaker 2: they're behind. That gets them even more motivated. Alex If
- 6:44Speaker 2: the United States is up four to one or five
- 6:46Speaker 2: to one tomorrow with ten minutes to go, the United
- 6:48Speaker 2: States still can't take their foot off the gas pedal. Yes,
- 6:52Speaker 2: they have to be cautious, they can't get caught they
- 6:55Speaker 2: get caught up ice, But they can't just allow Canada
- 7:00Speaker 2: to take to play them because Canada, their will to
- 7:04Speaker 2: win on a scale of one to ten is an
- 7:06Speaker 2: eleven and you really have to play sixty minutes to
- 7:10Speaker 2: beat them. And that's what the United States is going
- 7:12Speaker 2: to have to do tomorrow to beat them. A couple
- 7:15Speaker 2: of things that I've just really caught my eye the
- 7:18Speaker 2: rise of Macklin Celebrini and we talked about it on
- 7:21Speaker 2: the last podcast talking about the skill levels of Cono
- 7:24Speaker 2: McDavid and Nathan McKinnon, and we said that rising to
- 7:29Speaker 2: that level is Macklin Celebrini, and Macklin Celebriny is having,
- 7:34Speaker 2: at the age of nineteen, in his first ever Olympics,
- 7:37Speaker 2: is having a spectacular tournament. Their quality of skill is
- 7:46Speaker 2: off the charts. And yesterday when Finland was up to nothing,
- 7:50Speaker 2: John Cooper the coach of the Tampa Bay Lightning, who
- 7:53Speaker 2: is the coach of the Canadian Olympic team, took McDavid
- 7:59Speaker 2: was playing with Celebate and Tom Wilson. He took Wilson
- 8:04Speaker 2: off that line and he put McKinnon in there. So
- 8:06Speaker 2: he put the three big guns on that line. They
- 8:08Speaker 2: were on that line for the rest of the game.
- 8:10Speaker 2: He put Wilson with Sam Bennett and Brad Marshatt and Uh, Wilson,
- 8:19Speaker 2: Bennon and Marshant were as good as any line on
- 8:22Speaker 2: the ice. The physically helped lead to the tying goal.
- 8:27Speaker 2: I know Finland. UH thought that it was uh, you know,
- 8:32Speaker 2: a crease of violation and the goaltender interference. It was close.
- 8:36Speaker 2: I thought. I thought it was a good goal, but
- 8:39Speaker 2: Marshaant being aggressive in front of the net allowed them
- 8:41Speaker 2: to tie the game with McCart tied it with the
- 8:45Speaker 2: with the slap shot. Uh and UH. Then there was
- 8:49Speaker 2: a penalty with two with two thirty five to go,
- 8:51Speaker 2: a high stick on on Amico mcle of the back
- 8:55Speaker 2: to back champion UH Florida Panthers. It I would have it.
- 9:01Speaker 2: It wasn't the worst high stick in the world. We've
- 9:02Speaker 2: seen those high sticks get passed up sometimes, but it
- 9:06Speaker 2: was a penalty and you put you put McDavid McKinnon,
- 9:11Speaker 2: s calabreening mccarr all on the power play. Yeah, you
- 9:16Speaker 2: better say your prayers and you cannot you cannot make
- 9:21Speaker 2: penalties against Team Canada. Especially.
- 9:24Speaker 1: Let me ask you about this. I feel like this
- 9:26Speaker 1: tournament more than others, maybe because Kenny Albert and those
- 9:29Speaker 1: are pointing it out, but the the idea of being
- 9:32Speaker 1: teammates going into these world levels, it helps. I mean
- 9:36Speaker 1: Bennett and Marsha and their teammates and then Boldie, you know,
- 9:39Speaker 1: he gave it. He was the first right there with
- 9:41Speaker 1: Quinn Hughes because they're teammates up and I mean, the
- 9:44Speaker 1: the idea of the teammates is really in playing a
- 9:46Speaker 1: role this Olympics, isn't it.
- 9:48Speaker 2: I totally agree. I mean, you look at Team Canada.
- 9:53Speaker 2: They have cal mccarr and they have Delante's they play
- 9:57Speaker 2: regularly with the with the Kyle with the Avalanche, with
- 10:01Speaker 2: the Colorado Avalanche, and they and they're they're lead defensive
- 10:05Speaker 2: pair and they play together, which is which is smart.
- 10:10Speaker 2: So one hundred right, the familiarity definitely makes a difference
- 10:15Speaker 2: the other thing is there was a play and there
- 10:17Speaker 2: wasn't a goal scoring play. It was happened. It happened,
- 10:20Speaker 2: uh in the first period where Marshant bowled over his
- 10:27Speaker 2: teammate Nico mcla going into uh jurisorrows in the uh
- 10:31Speaker 2: finished net. So there's it. They're looking at these, whether
- 10:36Speaker 2: your teammate or not, for this. For these two weeks,
- 10:40Speaker 2: it's it's the enemy. You might next week you might
- 10:44Speaker 2: be going out to dinner with them when you're backup
- 10:46Speaker 2: playing for your team or whatever you do off ice,
- 10:50Speaker 2: but this week they're they're the enemy. And uh yeah.
- 10:56Speaker 1: I mean Nicol was playing up against you know, jt
- 10:59Speaker 1: and and Trocheck and I heard from Eli Walker that
- 11:03Speaker 1: he was crying after Sweden got knocked out of this Olympics.
- 11:07Speaker 1: A lot of these guys got emotional. I mean, this
- 11:09Speaker 1: is a very big deal.
- 11:10Speaker 2: It's a big deal. Now that being said, yes, it
- 11:15Speaker 2: is a big deal. And I remember some of the
- 11:17Speaker 2: Americans who were crying after they lost that overtime game
- 11:20Speaker 2: in twenty ten in Vancouver to the Sydney carsby golden goal.
- 11:28Speaker 2: The thing is, even though they want to they want
- 11:31Speaker 2: to win this gold medal. Every player wants to win
- 11:34Speaker 2: this skull medal that's in this tournament. And you know
- 11:36Speaker 2: eighty five percent of them are NHL players, no matter
- 11:39Speaker 2: what what nation is.
- 11:40Speaker 1: That's why medaling in general is going to be so
- 11:43Speaker 1: important to me. It's like, you want to get the gold,
- 11:45Speaker 1: but we're getting medaled. I mean, that's a big deal
- 11:48Speaker 1: that the US with this caliber. But we should go
- 11:50Speaker 1: for gold obviously. But I think I know where you're
- 11:51Speaker 1: going with this is to medal are important.
- 11:54Speaker 2: It is important. But if you if you go to
- 11:58Speaker 2: June and you ask any of these players that when
- 12:01Speaker 2: they're playing for this in the Stanley Cup playoffs and
- 12:04Speaker 2: they have a chance to win the Stanley Cup, Olympic
- 12:06Speaker 2: Medal or Stanley cuper of them are gonna say Stanley Cup. Yes,
- 12:14Speaker 2: they want to win. They want to win tomorrow. The
- 12:17Speaker 2: United States does not expect to lose tomorrow. They do not,
- 12:20Speaker 2: and it will be heartbreaking if they lose.
- 12:24Speaker 1: Well, let's say about that because you mentioned Cinda kid
- 12:28Speaker 1: and this year has been weird, right, So we had
- 12:29Speaker 1: that injury and they weren't sure he was going to play,
- 12:31Speaker 1: it didn't play yesterday, or it just it was kind
- 12:35Speaker 1: of a mess with him now they say he might
- 12:37Speaker 1: play tomorrow. I think he will. But to me and
- 12:41Speaker 1: maybe because of the twenty ten goal, that guy's the
- 12:43Speaker 1: vetterman of the team Canada. And if he's not locked
- 12:45Speaker 1: in one hundred percent or health one hundred percent, that
- 12:48Speaker 1: does favor the US a little bit more than the
- 12:50Speaker 1: other years.
- 12:52Speaker 2: Well, this Canadian team is so so so stacked. It's
- 12:56Speaker 2: so stacked. I mean, yeah, they probably they want to
- 12:58Speaker 2: have him just because of his the legacy of his
- 13:02Speaker 2: of his international and national hockey league career. But this
- 13:05Speaker 2: team is so is so stacked, this team Canada, it's it's.
- 13:11Speaker 1: Unbelievabviously McDavid took the reins yesterday and was able to
- 13:15Speaker 1: lock in, as they say, and and get this team
- 13:18Speaker 1: to win against Finland.
- 13:19Speaker 2: So yeah, but they did a great job. But they
- 13:23Speaker 2: would not have been out. They would not be playing
- 13:26Speaker 2: tomorrow if it wasn't for Tom Wilson, Sam Bennett and
- 13:30Speaker 2: Brad Marshawn. I mean that line was just as effective
- 13:34Speaker 2: as the McDavid McKinnon, the Celebrinian line. I can't believe
- 13:37Speaker 2: how good, how good celebrin he is this quickly. I
- 13:42Speaker 2: mean I saw him play live in college. I know
- 13:43Speaker 2: he was gonna be good, but in his second year
- 13:49Speaker 2: he's blossomed. Alex These young players in the National Hockey League,
- 13:53Speaker 2: whether they're from North America or from Europe, the future
- 13:57Speaker 2: of the NHL, as far as he's skill level young
- 14:00Speaker 2: guys is off the charts. There's this is just me speaking,
- 14:05Speaker 2: and you know, I have been watch in hockey for
- 14:07Speaker 2: sixty years plus. The skill level at the National Hockey
- 14:12Speaker 2: League level right now is the best in the history
- 14:16Speaker 2: of the league. There's no doubt in my mind.
- 14:19Speaker 1: You know. And I also think about how in eighty
- 14:21Speaker 1: they were not these six foot seven guys. They were
- 14:25Speaker 1: like smaller kids, and they were college kids, and they's
- 14:28Speaker 1: a bit more scrawny, I feel like. And now maybe
- 14:32Speaker 1: that's the evolution of Team USA from then to now,
- 14:35Speaker 1: but it just seems like a very different makeup than
- 14:37Speaker 1: the team that won in eighty. Yet somehow there is
- 14:41Speaker 1: an underdog spirit in both teams that I feel like
- 14:44Speaker 1: we're coming into it as tomorrow is we you know,
- 14:48Speaker 1: might be we're expected to win, but we got to
- 14:50Speaker 1: do it. And there's that sort of miracle, a nice
- 14:52Speaker 1: kind of energy I'm feeling going into tomorrow.
- 14:55Speaker 2: Well, if the United States wins tomorrow. It's no miracle. Yes,
- 14:58Speaker 2: it's ironically on the anniversary of the Miracle on Ice,
- 15:04Speaker 2: when the United States beat the Soviet Union four to
- 15:07Speaker 2: three February twenty second, nineteen eighty soul.
- 15:10Speaker 1: By the way, would be amazing on America to fifty
- 15:13Speaker 1: to win it on America's first presidents birthday, George Washington, Alex, the.
- 15:19Speaker 2: Symmetry is is pretty amazing. For sure. I hope they win. Obviously,
- 15:26Speaker 2: I'm rooting for them. I think they have a great
- 15:30Speaker 2: chance of winning. I think they have to stay out
- 15:32Speaker 2: of the box. They have to obviously take advantage of
- 15:38Speaker 2: any power play they get. They cannot be timid and
- 15:43Speaker 2: they cannot take as I said earlier, they cannot take
- 15:45Speaker 2: their foot off the gas pedal if they're leading in
- 15:48Speaker 2: the third period. They gotta play smart. But Canada will
- 15:52Speaker 2: not die. They will not die, Alex. They're like Dracula.
- 15:57Speaker 2: You gotta drive the stake through the heart to kill them.
- 16:00Speaker 1: And by the way, I think I'm going to add
- 16:02Speaker 1: a team USA Jersey to my fanatics. I don't know
- 16:05Speaker 1: if you saw this. The storefront I've created like a marketplace,
- 16:08Speaker 1: so I'm gonna add that to my collection and maybe
- 16:11Speaker 1: sell some Team USA stuff because they deserve it. This
- 16:13Speaker 1: year obviously you always want to rep Team USA. May
- 16:16Speaker 1: I'll throw a jersey up there and you can find
- 16:18Speaker 1: them linked below, because you know, hey, they've been at Finax,
- 16:23Speaker 1: has been truly supportive Team USA and they've been talking
- 16:25Speaker 1: about them all all tournament long. By the way, So.
- 16:28Speaker 2: Which color are you gonna get? There's a bunch of
- 16:30Speaker 2: colors I saw.
- 16:32Speaker 1: I really I do like the white one. I do?
- 16:34Speaker 2: Yeah, No, I actually I like the white one.
- 16:36Speaker 1: I do because I have a blue USA jersey, might
- 16:38Speaker 1: as well get a white one too, so you know,
- 16:40Speaker 1: even it out a little bit.
- 16:41Speaker 2: So so uh, Austin Matthews, Yeah, I know, statistically his
- 16:49Speaker 2: status looked.
- 16:52Speaker 1: And remember he's a guy that's coming off of this well,
- 16:54Speaker 1: he missed a few big shots last year in the
- 16:56Speaker 1: Four Nations, but he looks on this tournament. Am I right?
- 17:00Speaker 2: Well he has to, yes, and no, he's not been
- 17:08Speaker 2: the dominant player that he needs to be. I think
- 17:11Speaker 2: tomorrow is a big game for Austin Matthews, not only
- 17:16Speaker 2: for the South of the border, but he plays for
- 17:18Speaker 2: the Toronto Maple Leafs, Canada's most popular team because they
- 17:23Speaker 2: play in the biggest metropolitan area and they are a
- 17:25Speaker 2: national team in Canada, just like the Canadians. But the
- 17:30Speaker 2: Greater Toronto metropolitan area is the fifth largest market in
- 17:34Speaker 2: North America. And there's a lot of pressure I think
- 17:38Speaker 2: on Austin Matthews from both sides of the border because
- 17:43Speaker 2: he plays for Toronto and Toronto has failed in the playoffs,
- 17:47Speaker 2: and they have a lot of superstars, you know, Taveris
- 17:50Speaker 2: and Neilander, and you know I got rid of Marner
- 17:53Speaker 2: who won the game for Canada the other day in
- 17:56Speaker 2: overtime with a brilliant goal. I think tomorrow tomorrow is
- 18:02Speaker 2: a big pressure game for Austin Matthews. Watch Austin Matthews tomorrow.
- 18:07Speaker 2: He he needs to be a difference maker for the
- 18:10Speaker 2: United States and for himself. That's that's my observation.
- 18:15Speaker 1: I you know, all right now talking about performances, and
- 18:20Speaker 1: you know, he gets roasted for the way he it
- 18:23Speaker 1: was sort of a quicker exit I think for Winnipeg
- 18:26Speaker 1: last year. But Hella Buck, I mean, what a changing goal.
- 18:29Speaker 1: That was the difference maker. And you said that way
- 18:31Speaker 1: early on in the preliminaries loop.
- 18:34Speaker 2: You know, he's a great goaltender. He'll be under pressure tomorrow.
- 18:39Speaker 2: Remember he won the Vesno Trophy and MVP last year,
- 18:42Speaker 2: and really in the last thirty years, only two or
- 18:45Speaker 2: three goaltenders have one MVP. Jose Theodore Domi, Kashik carry Price,
- 18:54Speaker 2: I believe also won one year. But I think that's
- 18:56Speaker 2: it and there's gonna be there's gonna be pressure on him, but.
- 19:05Speaker 1: You know, it's being a managed I always thought it.
- 19:07Speaker 1: The way he spells is the name Austin, I always
- 19:09Speaker 1: thought was a Canadian spelling, not the American. That's why
- 19:12Speaker 1: I was like, Oh he's American. That's so interesting.
- 19:14Speaker 2: He's from Scottsdale, Arizona, the first superstar from Arizona. He's
- 19:20Speaker 2: a great player, but tomorrow has got to be He's
- 19:22Speaker 2: got to make an imprint on that game. You know,
- 19:26Speaker 2: the Jack Hughes and Larkin quin Us, they all have
- 19:30Speaker 2: to be as good as they've been throughout the tournament.
- 19:35Speaker 2: And it's gonna be a close I think it's gonna
- 19:36Speaker 2: be a close game. I hope there's no controversy in it.
- 19:41Speaker 2: I hope there's no crappy penalties down the stretch. I
- 19:44Speaker 2: hope the game is officiated correctly and at a level
- 19:51Speaker 2: for a gold medal game like this. And I'm telling you, Alex,
- 19:56Speaker 2: if this game was on at three o'clock like the
- 19:58Speaker 2: game in twenty ten one, because they was in Vancouver
- 20:04Speaker 2: and they had over twenty seven million viewers, which is
- 20:07Speaker 2: like NFL type numbers, I think they might have hit
- 20:10Speaker 2: between thirty five and forty million viewers tomorrow.
- 20:12Speaker 1: So listen of it. It's eight am because they want
- 20:15Speaker 1: to do the game earlier in Milan because of the
- 20:17Speaker 1: closing ceremony that night. I'm trying to figure it out.
- 20:19Speaker 2: Well, the uh puck drop is at two ten, you know, uh,
- 20:29Speaker 2: Milan time, and I believe the closing ceremonies I believe
- 20:35Speaker 2: are at two thirty New York time, so you know
- 20:42Speaker 2: they're gonna bump into each other.
- 20:44Speaker 3: So uh, you know they want to do that, so
- 20:49Speaker 3: you know, there'll be a little bit of a separation
- 20:51Speaker 3: between the last event, which is the Olympic Hockey Game
- 20:55Speaker 3: gold medal game, and the uh closing ceremonies.
- 20:58Speaker 2: But that's the reason. And then yeah, you got to
- 21:00Speaker 2: stick it out with time difference. So it's starting at
- 21:03Speaker 2: you know, at five town on the West coast, so
- 21:05Speaker 2: they're not going to get anywhere near the numbers that
- 21:07Speaker 2: they would get if the game was at two o'clock,
- 21:10Speaker 2: three o'clock or in prime time.
- 21:13Speaker 1: But I want to get to the other events because
- 21:15Speaker 1: obviously hockey's on our minds, and we got to talk
- 21:18Speaker 1: about Aaron Frankles Ryan miller est performance. I mean, that
- 21:21Speaker 1: was what I want to get to the other events
- 21:23Speaker 1: real quick. I thought I'd want to do adaptive skiing,
- 21:26Speaker 1: and I still might, but not at the level these
- 21:28Speaker 1: guys are doing it. I mean, I have never seen
- 21:30Speaker 1: so many crashes on a slope like I've seen almost
- 21:33Speaker 1: every day with these uh with these runs. Here are
- 21:36Speaker 1: you seeing that too?
- 21:38Speaker 2: It seems like every time I put on either USA
- 21:41Speaker 2: A Network, NBC or peacock, uh yeah, somebody is uh
- 21:47Speaker 2: uh crashing into uh into a bank of.
- 21:50Speaker 1: Snow vons down anomaly. It's been happening a lot.
- 21:55Speaker 2: And also it's been happening a lot.
- 21:57Speaker 1: Yeah. I'm like, is this lim gonna fly off? This
- 21:59Speaker 1: guy the way he's just unbelievable. And then they bank
- 22:02Speaker 1: off the one of these other guys in the snowboard
- 22:05Speaker 1: or whatever hit off the one of the edges, and
- 22:09Speaker 1: I'm like what's going on with these sports like I
- 22:11Speaker 1: don't understand.
- 22:12Speaker 2: It shows you how fearless these athletes are.
- 22:18Speaker 1: And then by Eric Frangle, but I have to cover
- 22:19Speaker 1: a Lissa loop. So as you know, Sarah Hughes when
- 22:23Speaker 1: she won her gold medal twenty four years ago, went
- 22:26Speaker 1: and supported the Viscardi Center right after because she's a
- 22:28Speaker 1: Long Island girl. So she came to Sportsnight that year
- 22:32Speaker 1: she won gold. And I have to say that story
- 22:33Speaker 1: real quick. I hope Alisa Lou does the same. But
- 22:37Speaker 1: she's the most jobial medal winner of all these people.
- 22:40Speaker 1: I mean, she's just the most happiest girl that won.
- 22:44Speaker 1: I'm sure you saw some of that.
- 22:46Speaker 2: Yeah, and obviously, you know, almost a quarter century between
- 22:51Speaker 2: gold medals for the United States, so it was very
- 22:53Speaker 2: big for her to break that streak, and she did.
- 22:58Speaker 2: She did. She did a great job, as did the
- 23:00Speaker 2: American women's hockey team. Yes, they were heavily favored, even
- 23:05Speaker 2: over Canada, and they needed heroics, you know, from from
- 23:12Speaker 2: Hillary Knight, who might who said this might be your
- 23:14Speaker 2: last in an interview with Kristin Tapman after what she
- 23:18Speaker 2: didn't make it sound for sure she might be back.
- 23:20Speaker 2: Who knows and the game winning goal was amazing. That
- 23:26Speaker 2: pass from behind it behind the goal line was about
- 23:31Speaker 2: the one hundred and one hundred and twenty feet and
- 23:34Speaker 2: Megan Keller courted in stride, went down that left side,
- 23:39Speaker 2: put the fake on defenseman, and then went to the
- 23:43Speaker 2: back end and win the game. A brilliant goal. A
- 23:44Speaker 2: goal maybe again, I am not a women's hockey expert
- 23:48Speaker 2: and historian, but that has to be as good a
- 23:52Speaker 2: goal has been scored in American history, and the Americans
- 23:55Speaker 2: deserved to win the gold medal they did about.
- 24:00Speaker 1: The Keller and I'm like, there's are saying Megan Kelly,
- 24:06Speaker 1: aren't they like I was just waiting for.
- 24:07Speaker 2: That good But their opponents thirty three to two over that.
- 24:13Speaker 2: But over the two weeks.
- 24:14Speaker 1: How about the two hundred and fifty two minutes of
- 24:16Speaker 1: shutout play. I mean, that's really a remarkable, remarkable statue.
- 24:20Speaker 2: I mean remarkable. It is remarkable. And again, women's hockey
- 24:24Speaker 2: has to get better with the depth of their teams.
- 24:27Speaker 2: I think I heard this on Series. I didn't research
- 24:29Speaker 2: this myself, but I heard this on Series satellite radio
- 24:34Speaker 2: that at the last thirty two tournaments internationally, whether it's
- 24:43Speaker 2: a world championship we're talking about the women or Olympics
- 24:48Speaker 2: or whatever international tournament is a thirty out of the
- 24:51Speaker 2: last thirty two. The championship slash gold medal game was
- 24:57Speaker 2: the United States versus. They gotta get more competition, they
- 25:03Speaker 2: gotta get more parody at the women's international level. Uh.
- 25:09Speaker 2: And and I think.
- 25:10Speaker 1: P WHL is gonna be very interesting too, adding to
- 25:13Speaker 1: all of this, so that by four years from now,
- 25:16Speaker 1: you'll see more stars in the p WHL, be in
- 25:19Speaker 1: the Olympics, and it will be sort of similar and
- 25:23Speaker 1: parallel to the way that the NHL guys are allowed. I
- 25:26Speaker 1: have to say, I'm very happy Gary Beman left the
- 25:30Speaker 1: NHLers play this year. I mean, I didn't realize it
- 25:32Speaker 1: was two Olympics since removed since they played. And we
- 25:36Speaker 1: all know JT's injury was the reason why. Uh the Olympics. Yes,
- 25:41Speaker 1: they did not bring them back ripped.
- 25:44Speaker 2: That wasn't good. I mean the Islanders were out of
- 25:46Speaker 2: playoffs at that point, but they were still I thinking, uh,
- 25:50Speaker 2: you know, in distance to make the playoffs. To lose
- 25:52Speaker 2: their best player wasn't good. But Alex, that's the thing.
- 25:57Speaker 2: Kevin Fiala, he's out for the year, the Kings are
- 26:00Speaker 2: two three points out of a playoff spot. Kevin Fiala
- 26:04Speaker 2: has forty has scored forty points for them, and they
- 26:07Speaker 2: just got Pinaron to help supplement a guy like Kevin Fiala.
- 26:11Speaker 2: Fiale's out for the year with a very bad leg
- 26:16Speaker 2: injury and that needed an operation. So moving forward will
- 26:24Speaker 2: and the player is always going to want to play.
- 26:27Speaker 2: But as fans, sometimes do you say, is it worth it?
- 26:34Speaker 2: If you're a fan of the Edmonton Oilers, is it
- 26:36Speaker 2: worth it if say Gotha bid conor McDavid tears his
- 26:41Speaker 2: ACL tomorrow, or if you're the Minnesota Wild if if
- 26:46Speaker 2: quinn Ues gets injured and is out for an extended period.
- 26:51Speaker 2: I love Olympic hockey, I love international hockey with NHL players,
- 26:56Speaker 2: so it would be hard for me to vote against it.
- 26:59Speaker 2: Just throwing an out there, you know. I mean, it
- 27:03Speaker 2: doesn't look like Crosby's injury is serious. But the Penguins,
- 27:09Speaker 2: who are supposed to be in the running for the
- 27:11Speaker 2: number one draft pick this year, have a real chance
- 27:15Speaker 2: to make the playoffs, which and they haven't made the
- 27:17Speaker 2: playoffs for the last three years. I mean, the.
- 27:23Speaker 1: Whole team, and I guess Malcolinn retiring was part of that.
- 27:26Speaker 1: But uh, it's just well.
- 27:28Speaker 2: He's he's I mean, he's he might retire at the
- 27:31Speaker 2: end of this year, but he's having the tremendous he's
- 27:33Speaker 2: having a very good year, so he may not.
- 27:35Speaker 1: One of those other guys retired. I thought from the Penguins.
- 27:38Speaker 1: Maybe it was somebody else then, but no, it's been
- 27:42Speaker 1: It's been weird because I'm always used to the Penguins
- 27:44Speaker 1: being up at the top of this thing, and hey,
- 27:46Speaker 1: even competing against the Rangers in the playoffs a lot
- 27:48Speaker 1: of years.
- 27:49Speaker 2: But well, the weird thing is the assistant coach at
- 27:52Speaker 2: the Rangers fired, Don Muse is the head coach of
- 27:55Speaker 2: the Penguins, and the old Penguin coach is the coach
- 27:59Speaker 2: of the Arrange are going to make the playoffs, so
- 28:02Speaker 2: that is just stress.
- 28:03Speaker 1: And Sullivan's son in law is Charlie McAvoy. I learned that.
- 28:10Speaker 2: How crazy is that?
- 28:11Speaker 1: So that that's interesting stuff. All right, Well, we'll have
- 28:15Speaker 1: to see how it all plays out. And yes, I
- 28:17Speaker 1: almost said they were playing for the Stanley Cup, but
- 28:20Speaker 1: I meant the goal.
- 28:21Speaker 2: It's just yeah, no, I would know what you man.
- 28:24Speaker 1: A lot of these guys though, are Stanley Cup minded,
- 28:26Speaker 1: so we'll have to see. And yeah, there's a lot
- 28:28Speaker 1: more hockey to go after this tournament, uh for sure.
- 28:31Speaker 1: But this has been fun and I got to give
- 28:32Speaker 1: kudos to our buddy Kenny Albert. I mean to not
- 28:36Speaker 1: only do one gender, to do both genders and at
- 28:40Speaker 1: the same excellent level of excellency night and night out.
- 28:45Speaker 1: That's freaking impressive.
- 28:46Speaker 2: Louie Well, I watched all games, just about. I watched
- 28:50Speaker 2: nine every game, no matter who's playing. And I have
- 28:54Speaker 2: to Noie, as I said to you all fair yesterday,
- 28:58Speaker 2: I think Kenny Albert is a betterannouncer now that he
- 29:01Speaker 2: was three years ago. If that's possible, that's how that's
- 29:04Speaker 2: how good he's been. But all the entire NBC broadcast team,
- 29:10Speaker 2: as far as the hockey goes, they have been outstanding.
- 29:14Speaker 2: And it was a couple of them even they didn't
- 29:16Speaker 2: identify themselves when I was watching on Peacock and whether
- 29:21Speaker 2: it's Brendan Burg, who's great, AJ Molesco, who's who's a
- 29:25Speaker 2: great commentator, Eddie oldchuk Tjo she very impressive. I you know,
- 29:31Speaker 2: it was his first time I really heard him do
- 29:34Speaker 2: do game. Ana analyzing. Usually he's in studio. I like
- 29:38Speaker 2: him very much. I think he's going to end up
- 29:40Speaker 2: as a game analyst Anson Carter, like I said Brian Bouche.
- 29:46Speaker 2: Jen Barderall who used to do some work for the Islanders.
- 29:50Speaker 2: Now she's on Hockey Night in Canada and she's a former,
- 29:54Speaker 2: a former Hall of Famer as is Aj Molesco. She's
- 29:57Speaker 2: an American Gold medalist in nineteen ninety and the Hall
- 30:01Speaker 2: of Famer, uh, the uh, the play by play and
- 30:05Speaker 2: the analysts for all these hockey games. I give him
- 30:08Speaker 2: an a. I give him an a that it's been tremendous.
- 30:13Speaker 2: It really has been.
- 30:14Speaker 1: It's been. It's been quite a run. And they did
- 30:17Speaker 1: use the NBA, NHL, NBC theme a couple of times
- 30:20Speaker 1: during intermission at points, and that was really a throwback.
- 30:22Speaker 1: But no, they did. They've done a great job.
- 30:25Speaker 2: Yeah. I wish the I wish the NHL. I love
- 30:27Speaker 2: I love the fact that they went to ABC ESPN
- 30:31Speaker 2: with the with the new deal, and I knew they're
- 30:33Speaker 2: going to add a second network. Just me, I would
- 30:36Speaker 2: have preferred NBC, you know, and they would use obviously
- 30:39Speaker 2: they would use U s A and Peacock and Uh,
- 30:43Speaker 2: you know NBCs centers back. Uh, yeah, I would do.
- 30:47Speaker 2: To me, that would have been the combination. T N
- 30:50Speaker 2: T is a cable channel exclusively, so you know.
- 30:54Speaker 1: M T and T. I don't know if you saw
- 30:56Speaker 1: an ESPN because they're both on the networks respectively. Did
- 31:00Speaker 1: you see Royalty sitting next to each other Wayne Gretzky
- 31:04Speaker 1: and Mark Messier in the booth during the Canada game
- 31:08Speaker 1: And there's a moment where they panned in and and
- 31:11Speaker 1: Gretzky's like making a point about something. And I'm like,
- 31:15Speaker 1: because they've talked about how they could fix the Rangers.
- 31:17Speaker 1: I made a meme about this, I'm like, maybe they're
- 31:19Speaker 1: not about how bad the Rangers are because they used
- 31:21Speaker 1: to be Ranger Royalty for quite a few years. Maybe
- 31:24Speaker 1: they can fix the team for Tory. Why not?
- 31:27Speaker 2: Who knows? Who knows? I think I think that Gretzky
- 31:32Speaker 2: is on that's something for the Oilers. I don't he might,
- 31:36Speaker 2: I'm not sure I think he did. I'm I'm I'm
- 31:39Speaker 2: not sure. But who knows? You know, Uh, what's what's
- 31:45Speaker 2: what's what's gonna happen? Uh with the Rangers at the
- 31:47Speaker 2: end of the ship. But I don't think, Alex. I
- 31:49Speaker 2: don't think Chris Drewy is going anywhere.
- 31:51Speaker 1: No, they're they're settled with him, even as they're trying
- 31:54Speaker 1: to make the Rangers and Nicks are publicly traded team.
- 31:58Speaker 1: Did you hear about this?
- 31:59Speaker 2: Yes? I did. I did see that.
- 32:02Speaker 1: So maybe we own stakes, we can have a say
- 32:04Speaker 1: in these teams.
- 32:05Speaker 2: Yeah, that's it.
- 32:07Speaker 1: Let our voices be hurt and and and the Giants
- 32:10Speaker 1: already gave ten percent of their steak to somebody else.
- 32:13Speaker 1: I mean, maybe these are Maybe Theanks are going to
- 32:15Speaker 1: be next, although they have had other minority owners in
- 32:20Speaker 1: the Yankee world, so maybe we're gonna see more of
- 32:22Speaker 1: this divesting and and allowing more people to have a steak.
- 32:27Speaker 1: That would be kind of interesting if that was the
- 32:28Speaker 1: case with all our teams. So we'll have to see,
- 32:31Speaker 1: all right, I have to. I have to figure this
- 32:33Speaker 1: out with you because I got to learn from vivid seats.
- 32:37Speaker 1: And it's a little off topic. But the soccer team
- 32:39Speaker 1: is now the New York City Pigeons. Is this correct?
- 32:42Speaker 1: Are we really the Pigeons in New York?
- 32:44Speaker 2: Wait? Wait, wait, wait wait, I did not see this.
- 32:47Speaker 1: Apparently in the New York City Football club are now
- 32:49Speaker 1: called the New York City Pigeons, And I'm a little
- 32:52Speaker 1: perturbed by this.
- 32:53Speaker 2: You mean the team that's going to play in a
- 32:54Speaker 2: new stadium across the way from City Field. Yes, they
- 32:58Speaker 2: changed there, and I did, Alex, you have breaks, you
- 33:01Speaker 2: have you have breaking news because I did not hear that.
- 33:06Speaker 2: And if that's the truth, if that story is accurate,
- 33:09Speaker 2: that's that's probably the worst, the worst nickname.
- 33:14Speaker 1: The Pigeons has been the club's unofficial nickname for as
- 33:16Speaker 1: long as any of us can remember. Now I remember
- 33:19Speaker 1: ever them calling themselves the Pigeons, do.
- 33:21Speaker 2: I And I know soccer teams internationally have unofficial nicknames
- 33:28Speaker 2: besides the.
- 33:30Speaker 1: Pigeon, a mascot called Skyscraper. So that's really where we're
- 33:33Speaker 1: at right now with them.
- 33:36Speaker 2: Oh my god, Well, that's a terrible nickname. There's some
- 33:38Speaker 2: horrible nicknames in my opinion, the Toronto Raptors, the Nationale Predators.
- 33:44Speaker 2: Just to name two off the top of my head,
- 33:46Speaker 2: terrible nicknames, the utah Madmoth. It's not as bad as
- 33:50Speaker 2: the Raptors are the Predators, but there's some terrible nicknames
- 33:54Speaker 2: out there. In my opinion, I'm more traditional. It's when
- 33:58Speaker 2: it comes to sports nicknames.
- 34:00Speaker 1: I could tell well, I'll always love the Blackhawks because
- 34:03Speaker 1: my dad loved that team.
- 34:04Speaker 2: Well, that's a great nickname. I would never put put
- 34:08Speaker 2: the Blackhawks in the category of the Toronto right.
- 34:12Speaker 1: And they're the most striking logo to me, I've always
- 34:14Speaker 1: loved their logo.
- 34:16Speaker 2: It's a beautiful logo.
- 34:19Speaker 1: Anyway. So there's that little nugget that they apparently are
- 34:22Speaker 1: calling themselves the Pigeons now so and and I don't
- 34:26Speaker 1: I don't know. It doesn't make us like a strong
- 34:28Speaker 1: force going into a game. I'm sorry. It just did
- 34:31Speaker 1: not give me a fear of that.
- 34:32Speaker 2: No, I mean the difference between the nickname the Pigeons
- 34:37Speaker 2: and say the Eagles or the Seahawks. Yeah, that sounds
- 34:42Speaker 2: more intimidating than And.
- 34:43Speaker 1: By the way, the Seahawks got sold this week after winning.
- 34:46Speaker 1: That is just talk about turn of events with that.
- 34:50Speaker 1: I mean, they win the Super Bowl and now they're.
- 34:51Speaker 2: Sold sell at the top of their value. I don't
- 34:56Speaker 2: know if the sale is official yet, but I heard
- 34:59Speaker 2: that at they might go for eleven bill who knows.
- 35:06Speaker 1: Man, that's why and that's why this guy wants the
- 35:09Speaker 1: wide receiver, wants to raise now, so we'll have to
- 35:12Speaker 1: get it. Well. Look, as Ryan pointed out packs perspective,
- 35:16Speaker 1: pointed out, you know, the Jayson was not really well
- 35:22Speaker 1: the running back. But these guys, you know, they weren't
- 35:24Speaker 1: really under the They were under their radar a little
- 35:27Speaker 1: bit till this Super Bowl. Now they're all won money,
- 35:30Speaker 1: I guess, so we'll have to see, well.
- 35:31Speaker 2: JS Sam will get his money. Kenneth Walker may not,
- 35:35Speaker 2: because you can replace running backs probably better than and
- 35:39Speaker 2: quicker than any position, uh in in football. But Jackson
- 35:45Speaker 2: last note, but he is getting his money.
- 35:47Speaker 1: One last note, Rick Patino today at the Garden. I
- 35:50Speaker 1: mean it's about an hour away from tip off when
- 35:52Speaker 1: we're recording this. They should beat Creighton. I mean they
- 35:55Speaker 1: look like they're steam rolling the whole league at this point.
- 35:58Speaker 1: So we'll have to see. But the other note I
- 36:00Speaker 1: want to mention is as we hit more snow down
- 36:05Speaker 1: in Florida, Pete Alonso, first game as an Oreo, making
- 36:11Speaker 1: the Mets miss him already.
- 36:12Speaker 2: I mean, there was some shot, buddy move.
- 36:19Speaker 1: It's a statement home run. It's like I'm in Baltimore now,
- 36:22Speaker 1: so he is and he is.
- 36:25Speaker 2: And again we talked about a million times we don't
- 36:28Speaker 2: understand why he's not with the Mets, but I guess, uh,
- 36:33Speaker 2: you gotta ask David Sterns that behind Cloges doors.
- 36:36Speaker 1: Oh my god, man, it's just it's it's as I say,
- 36:41Speaker 1: that was the sports story of twenty twenty five. I
- 36:43Speaker 1: don't care anybody says losing Alonzo was the story in
- 36:46Speaker 1: New York in sports, just well, the.
- 36:48Speaker 2: Thing is losing Alonzo if they were in a battle
- 36:52Speaker 2: for him, but they didn't even battle for him. They
- 36:54Speaker 2: just let him go.
- 36:56Speaker 1: That's the more shocking part.
- 36:57Speaker 2: Yeah, that's the more shocking part.
- 36:59Speaker 1: It really is your your franchise home run winner, and
- 37:03Speaker 1: it just that you let them go. I don't know
- 37:05Speaker 1: what that is. But I don't know. I feel like
- 37:08Speaker 1: it's too early to get any takes from spring training
- 37:11Speaker 1: because they just started a Bowl yesterday, so it's too
- 37:14Speaker 1: early to figure it out. Plus half these guys are
- 37:16Speaker 1: now leaving for the World Baseball Classic, so it's gonna
- 37:19Speaker 1: be uh. But look, if we win gold tomorrow, I
- 37:23Speaker 1: hope to see you watching the World Baseball Classic because
- 37:25Speaker 1: then another team to root for in the USA. I mean,
- 37:27Speaker 1: I'll be rooting for USA. I hope you watch. I
- 37:30Speaker 1: hope that inspires you to watch next month too.
- 37:32Speaker 2: Well, Alex, Alex, you know when I think about the
- 37:35Speaker 2: World Baseball Classic, and it's not on the level.
- 37:37Speaker 1: With America to fifty. Everything's in that now again.
- 37:42Speaker 2: Alex Alex, I want to see America win. I am
- 37:44Speaker 2: not rooting against the USA. If I turn on Fox
- 37:48Speaker 2: or Fox Sports One or I think, well, I think
- 37:51Speaker 2: has the broadcast rights to tournament. I want to see
- 37:54Speaker 2: the USA win. To me, it's a semi legitimate tournament
- 37:57Speaker 2: because the pit there's pitch counts pitch. It can only
- 38:00Speaker 2: go so far. You know, it's well, it's sixty five.
- 38:03Speaker 1: The big difference is Otani's not pitching this year, I
- 38:05Speaker 1: don't believe.
- 38:06Speaker 2: So there's that again. Do I want to see USA win?
- 38:11Speaker 2: But I just want to see all the players, whether
- 38:14Speaker 2: they play for the Mets or not, get through this.
- 38:17Speaker 2: We're Nott being injured.
- 38:18Speaker 1: Yes, Well one more thing, and it's a little poltical,
- 38:21Speaker 1: but I have to say. My joke was if the
- 38:26Speaker 1: US plays Canada tomorrow, then all tariffs will be removed
- 38:31Speaker 1: from Canada. Now, obviously Supreme Court did that job yesterday,
- 38:34Speaker 1: so we are day early than that. But yeah, I
- 38:38Speaker 1: kind of called the tariffs will be off the table
- 38:39Speaker 1: if we'd beat Canada, And I was right for one part.
- 38:42Speaker 1: Now let's do another play tomorrow.
- 38:45Speaker 2: Yes, well we'll see what happened.
- 38:50Speaker 1: We'll come you know. And maybe because I was nineteen
- 38:53Speaker 1: in twenty ten or whatever eighteen, so I didn't really
- 38:57Speaker 1: know the whole roster. But I just feel more confident
- 38:59Speaker 1: this year than I did sixteen years ago. And I mean,
- 39:03Speaker 1: I'm just I'm ready. I'm ready to watch this thing
- 39:05Speaker 1: at eight am tomorrow, Alex.
- 39:07Speaker 2: This is a better team and has more firepower, has
- 39:09Speaker 2: more depth of scoring, has more two way players. I
- 39:14Speaker 2: can't say that's better goaltending because Ryan Miller had a
- 39:17Speaker 2: great career in the NHL and he was great in
- 39:20Speaker 2: that series, winning MVP in twenty ten. So I mean,
- 39:26Speaker 2: this is US has a great chance tomorrow, and I
- 39:28Speaker 2: hope they take the lead. You don't want to be
- 39:31Speaker 2: chasing because that puts pressure on you. Let Canada chase,
- 39:34Speaker 2: because Canada, Canada knows they know how to, they know
- 39:38Speaker 2: how to come back. But you want to play with
- 39:40Speaker 2: the lead. You want to play with the lead. You
- 39:42Speaker 2: want to get in front of Bennington and create all
- 39:47Speaker 2: kinds of havoc in front of the net. I think
- 39:49Speaker 2: it's going to be the most physical game of the
- 39:51Speaker 2: of the.
- 39:52Speaker 1: Of the billion Bennington. I think we talked about this before.
- 39:54Speaker 1: I think last year's Nation's Classic, he came back alive
- 39:58Speaker 1: because he was not at his peak for a while,
- 40:00Speaker 1: but then that Four Nations Cup happened. He was back
- 40:02Speaker 1: in his usual self. And now he's done it again
- 40:06Speaker 1: in the Olympic stage.
- 40:07Speaker 2: Alex He is not having him good year for the Blues,
- 40:10Speaker 2: but Team Canada selected him anyway, which was controversial in
- 40:14Speaker 2: Canadian among Canadian fans and media that they picked Bennington.
- 40:20Speaker 2: Now Bennington has made some big saves. He really got
- 40:23Speaker 2: to try to knock him off his game, which is
- 40:25Speaker 2: very hard to do. He has great concentration, but and
- 40:30Speaker 2: he's got great poise. I just hope they I hope
- 40:33Speaker 2: they score early. I just hope they can. Can not
- 40:37Speaker 2: the US does not fall behind by a couple of
- 40:40Speaker 2: goals early. That's gonna make it tough. But again, remember
- 40:43Speaker 2: in twenty ten, the United States was losing too nothing
- 40:47Speaker 2: in the second period, you know, scored to make it
- 40:50Speaker 2: two to one, and then the Devil's JP Parisi scored
- 40:54Speaker 2: with the net empty for the United States with twenty
- 40:57Speaker 2: four seconds ago to force the overtime period.
- 41:00Speaker 1: So parsee wow, wow, wow, Wow, what a Nate. What
- 41:04Speaker 1: a blash from the past. Yeah, I say, did I
- 41:07Speaker 1: say JP?
- 41:08Speaker 2: I mean Zach that JP was.
- 41:10Speaker 1: His dad, Dak Fares Yep, Wow, that's that's a blast
- 41:15Speaker 1: from the past.
- 41:16Speaker 2: Well, I'm just retired last year.
- 41:19Speaker 1: We'll see what happens tomorrow. I'm excited and I'm trying
- 41:25Speaker 1: to remember what was on that roster in twenty ten.
- 41:27Speaker 1: Now they talk about it because I feel like there
- 41:29Speaker 1: wasn't as much star power as there is now.
- 41:31Speaker 2: Am I right, there's more. There's more star power now
- 41:33Speaker 2: because the development of American hockey is is uh so
- 41:39Speaker 2: far advanced. A it's my first all watching hockey. Like
- 41:42Speaker 2: I said, you know, in nineteen sixty fourish, there was
- 41:46Speaker 2: no Americans in the National Hockey League. There was one
- 41:49Speaker 2: Tommy Williams who played for the Bruins and American, but
- 41:52Speaker 2: he was a third liner. They were all Canadian and
- 41:58Speaker 2: that then the Summit Series of seventy two.
- 42:02Speaker 1: I would say the speed is faster than twenty ten. Also,
- 42:05Speaker 1: I think as well, so it's gonna be a lot
- 42:07Speaker 1: of differences, but here we are lou Usa, Canada, just
- 42:11Speaker 1: like we drew it up in a sense. So yeah,
- 42:14Speaker 1: well to see, I know our hockey fans that listen
- 42:16Speaker 1: to the show, we're gonna love this episode because we
- 42:18Speaker 1: basically covered all hockey there. It was wall to wall today,
- 42:21Speaker 1: or say board to board.
- 42:23Speaker 2: It was, and uh it it deserves, it deserves to
- 42:29Speaker 2: be the dominant subject today. So everybody go to bed
- 42:35Speaker 2: early tonight, wake up, have you bring it right away
- 42:38Speaker 2: in the borrow morning and turn on NBC at eight o'clock.
- 42:42Speaker 2: Watch watch Kenyan and Eddie Oldruck and Bouchet between the glasses,
- 42:48Speaker 2: between the glass and uh the Usa.
- 42:52Speaker 1: Oh man, those uh just this NBC production is bringing
- 42:56Speaker 1: me back to when Darren when of Darren Pang between
- 42:58Speaker 1: the glasses for many years?
- 43:00Speaker 2: Yeah, the glass.
- 43:03Speaker 1: And one last thing, I have to tell you a
- 43:05Speaker 1: quick story about Eddie Oldschik. As you know, he covered
- 43:07Speaker 1: the Belmont Stakes for NBC for many years. And by
- 43:12Speaker 1: the way, he's got quite a story because he battled
- 43:14Speaker 1: cancer too, and he was he was and it was
- 43:18Speaker 1: a black Hawk. So my dad immediately was drawn to
- 43:20Speaker 1: him because of the Blackhawk connection. But you know, I
- 43:23Speaker 1: asked him once. I said to Belmont because it was
- 43:25Speaker 1: Stanley Cup night that night, I said, where would you
- 43:28Speaker 1: rather be? What do you think the answer is? I
- 43:31Speaker 1: remember that very vividly, so he had a bit of
- 43:35Speaker 1: a dry sense of humor. But hey, if they're back
- 43:38Speaker 1: at Belmont, I'll definitely hang out with him next time
- 43:40Speaker 1: they're there. I don't think NBC has them now for
- 43:42Speaker 1: a while though, Belmont Stakes.
- 43:44Speaker 2: But yeah, I think I think ABC went it right.
- 43:48Speaker 1: I think you're right. But you remember all those years
- 43:50Speaker 1: it'd be Championship Saturday. You have that, and then you
- 43:53Speaker 1: have Stanley Cup right after. Like, yeah, I was the
- 43:56Speaker 1: lead in that was the leading to the Stanley Cup game,
- 44:00Speaker 1: and it was special because twenty eighteen was that year
- 44:02Speaker 1: they won. Bob Effort one went justified and they went
- 44:05Speaker 1: right to the NHL playoff Stanley Cup. We could talk
- 44:09Speaker 1: for hours on this, man. It's just so many memories.
- 44:13Speaker 2: There really are, Alex, They really are.
- 44:15Speaker 1: Because these networks. I mean, look NBA on NBC. I
- 44:17Speaker 1: grew up with that too. When I was a kid,
- 44:20Speaker 1: all Sundays were basically the Bulls on Sunday by NBC.
- 44:25Speaker 1: I grew up on the serious intro for the bulls.
- 44:27Speaker 1: That's how how far back I go with this, And
- 44:31Speaker 1: Bob Cossis I always love seeing his content, by the way,
- 44:34Speaker 1: you know why because I interviewed him also, and I
- 44:36Speaker 1: known him for like twenty years. So it's cool to
- 44:39Speaker 1: see these guys still on the You've.
- 44:42Speaker 2: Been You've interviewed him a couple of times, right, Alex.
- 44:45Speaker 1: At least well, no ones at the Guinness at the
- 44:48Speaker 1: Guinness Book of Records, longest catch or whatever it was,
- 44:52Speaker 1: yes last year with Yogi Bear's museum.
- 44:54Speaker 2: Okay, I thought you had interviewed him before that also,
- 44:58Speaker 2: but you interviewed everybody.
- 45:00Speaker 1: But anyway, that's our terminal's take this week. Enjoy your
- 45:04Speaker 1: Saturday rest up, wake up in red, white and blue tomorrow,
- 45:06Speaker 1: because we, as Mel Gibson would say in Brave Heart,
- 45:09Speaker 1: we ride at dawn. It feels like.
- 45:11Speaker 2: So that's right.
- 45:14Speaker 1: Here we go, loop.
- 45:15Speaker 2: Thank you, Alex, always pleasure being with you.
- 45:18Speaker 1: Thanks so much again for joining on one log up
- 45:20Speaker 1: Alex Sports Termino's take
