- 0:00That car show is brought to you by Sheffield Watches.
- 0:03We all love Sheffield Watches and we know you do too.
- 0:06We of course just got back from Monterey Car Week and we saw
- 0:09Sheffield Watches on lots of wrists.
- 0:12The Sheffield Watch brand has a long and storied history, but it
- 0:15was revived a couple of years back by our good friend and
- 0:18TrueCar guy Jay Turkus. Jay had been gifted a Sheffield
- 0:22Watch by his parents when he was a kid, and he still has it to
- 0:24this day. Jay wanted to make that same
- 0:27experience available to all of us.
- 0:29A reasonably priced, high quality watch that'll endure.
- 0:33From divers watches to watches designed for travel, to
- 0:36collaborations with automotive pals like Spike Farriston and
- 0:40Jay Leno, Sheffield has a watch for you.
- 0:43Find your own Sheffield watch at sheffieldwatches.com and at
- 0:47Sheffield Under Score. All sport Under Score watches on
- 0:50Instagram and let Jay know you heard about Sheffield watches on
- 0:54that car show. It was very Swedish.
- 0:58Children of the Corn is what I'm getting at tonight.
- 1:03We're fresh off of Car Week and we're coming in hot.
- 1:06The good, the bad and really was all good, much of it very good.
- 1:10The funny and the surreal. Car week didn't disappoint and
- 1:14well, we never did find any roof underwear.
- 1:16We do have a stories. Oh so many stories.
- 1:20It's that car show. It is that car show.
- 1:23What's up guys? How are you?
- 1:26Still recovering hell of a car week in the very best way.
- 1:32Yeah, the the best problem to have.
- 1:34But yeah, I think we're all still half there because it was
- 1:39such an amazing week. I'm already looking forward to
- 1:42next year and I'm still, yeah, still recovering from this, but.
- 1:45Yeah, we're not even a week out. No, no, this was my second Dan.
- 1:50This was how many for you? Probably half as many as Lindsay
- 1:54I reckon for maybe 5 or 6. Lindsay, I think this is the #33
- 1:59for you. Right.
- 2:01Which is weird because I'm only 22, but you know, don't.
- 2:04Don't think too hard about it. There was a few years where they
- 2:07did 2A year right? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 2:09So you rack them up more quickly?
- 2:11Exactly. That's right.
- 2:12That's right. So then if you skip, you don't
- 2:14drop your numbers either. Right.
- 2:16Yeah, well, I'm still processing it all.
- 2:18You know, while we were at Car Week, me and my little gang, and
- 2:23if you've never been to Car Week, you sort of end up hanging
- 2:25out with the people that you stay with for the most part,
- 2:27right? And obviously Dan, you were
- 2:28there doing work stuff. But so while we crossed paths,
- 2:31we didn't spend most of our time together.
- 2:34So we kind of each had our own adventures and wanted to talk
- 2:38about those a little bit today. I know we had some highlights,
- 2:42really no low lights. I don't think it was all.
- 2:44It was just kind of degrees of amazingness, you know, like it
- 2:46was. Well, mate, I was sort of
- 2:50marveling at that once we were back, you know, once we had all
- 2:54left the Monterey area was how little we actually saw each
- 2:58other in person. And I think that really
- 3:00illustrates car week if you haven't been there, because we
- 3:04all had different schedules. And so it's there's so much
- 3:08going on. We all had different schedules
- 3:10that even the fact that we do the podcast together, we kept,
- 3:14you know, bumping into each other spontaneously,
- 3:16momentarily. Yeah.
- 3:18And it was like high 5. And hey, I'll see you on
- 3:21Riverside on Thursday and we can catch up.
- 3:24Yeah, I mean, that's just kind of how it is, you know, And then
- 3:26you had all your other stuff going on, so I don't know how
- 3:28you did it, but should we go down the list?
- 3:32Yeah, but I didn't see you, Ryan, until maybe the part.
- 3:38No. Did I see you on Thursday night?
- 3:41What was the thing? I saw Thursday morning climbing
- 3:45into a Land Rover. That's right.
- 3:48Right, right. Well, and that's even funnier, I
- 3:52had seen Ryan right before I saw you, and you 2 never saw it.
- 3:55No, no. No, that that event, yeah.
- 3:58And to clarify, that was the the Tour de Pebble, right, which is
- 4:01this. So it's all the cars and most of
- 4:03the cars that are on the lawn at the Concorde Elegance.
- 4:08The drive is the 70 mile drive. No, it's it's up the Highway 1
- 4:15I. Think.
- 4:15This is what we did because we were along the coast.
- 4:17It's so the formal name is the Pebble Beach Tour d'elegance and
- 4:22it's anyone who is exhibiting a car on the lawn on Sunday and
- 4:26wants to drive their car. And it's about an hour, hour and
- 4:29a half round trip. And if they drive their car in
- 4:32this rally on Thursday, than if it gets down to it during the
- 4:36judging on Sunday and there's a tie between two cars in the
- 4:40class or in the whatever, the cars that have participated and
- 4:43driven and the rally get an extra point.
- 4:45So often it's a tie breaker. Interesting.
- 4:49Yeah. I thought it was interesting as
- 4:50well that you were. So you were in a vintage Range
- 4:52Rover in that group of, I'm sorry, Land Rover, rather Land
- 4:56Rover. And that group of vintage Land
- 4:58Rovers weren't necessarily being shown on the lawn, but they were
- 5:01part of, I guess, the, the larger event.
- 5:04But I think it was probably no coincidence that they ran those
- 5:07after all the other cars. We were kind of there were, we
- 5:12weren't, we were all thinking maybe we were towards the back,
- 5:16but we ended up being kind of in the middle.
- 5:19And, and the cars, they had some additional cars that didn't do
- 5:24the tour, but all the cars that did the tour ended up they were
- 5:27on the lawn on Sunday and I was very lucky I got to ride in.
- 5:31It was a 1998 Defender 110 and it was the one that was used by
- 5:36the US team in the penultimate Camel Trophy.
- 5:40Really. So you weren't breaking down
- 5:42because that was like jungle proof.
- 5:45Right, it had to be right. We started in Chile and they
- 5:49ended in Argentina for that rally.
- 5:51But yeah, I mean, all of the cars that all of the Land Rovers
- 5:55that participated in the tour have this tremendous over
- 5:59landing history one way or another.
- 6:00And they were all like preservation class, basically
- 6:03unrestored. A lot of them were private
- 6:06owners. But what was remarkable for me
- 6:09was how comfortable it was. Like we all kept remarking, this
- 6:13is delightful and you might not expect that.
- 6:17Some of the vehicles were steam powered or made out of wood or.
- 6:22Right. I mean.
- 6:24It was incredible. Ended up winning it, all right.
- 6:26But yeah. But we should backtrack because
- 6:28I think the week at least started for me with Motor Lux.
- 6:31And that was that was the night before.
- 6:33And so Motor Lux, if you don't know, was put on by our friends
- 6:36at Haggerty. So it's this social event, it's
- 6:39this great party at the, at the is it, what do they call it the
- 6:42The Jets? Monterey Jets.
- 6:43Monterey, right, where we all flew in, right and, and, and
- 6:48they transform this, this, this runway, these taxiways into the
- 6:51event. But there's, there's also the
- 6:53broader auctions that are going on and it's kind of like the, I
- 6:58don't know, it's kind of like the opening bell to everything,
- 7:01right? So it's a great event.
- 7:03They have these food stations, drink stations.
- 7:05You run into it is a who. If ever there was 1.
- 7:10First who's who, Yeah. And it gets a little tougher and
- 7:13then it goes on because it gets darker and people drink.
- 7:15But it's, yeah, it's a, it's a fantastic event.
- 7:18So, so we, we all came out of that going into Thursday for the
- 7:22tour and, and, and all the other things that that, that went on.
- 7:27But but Thursday was kind of a chill day, right, compared to
- 7:29the days that would follow. It depends.
- 7:34I think it depends on what your schedule was well.
- 7:36What else did you do on Thursday?
- 7:39Thursday I had I went to the track after the tour and then I
- 7:43had Range Rover had a reveal. They did a one of one called the
- 7:47Asilomar and it was a tribute to the Monterey Bay.
- 7:51And so they revealed that Thursday evening.
- 7:55So it was a a very Rover day for me.
- 7:57So you're a pro though? Yeah, you've been doing this for
- 7:59a minute and and some. Of us did you get a a fragrance?
- 8:04I didn't, but I did end up with. Something with a with a Range
- 8:08Rover. Yes, funny enough, I brought the
- 8:11Asilomar home in my suitcase. Thank you for asking.
- 8:14Well, it's, I went to the Range Rover house as they were setting
- 8:18up earlier in the day and they had an English lady who
- 8:24apparently the, the biggest selling or the fastest
- 8:27trajectory in terms of products right now for fragrances are in
- 8:32car smells. So if you forget your Christmas
- 8:36trees or your magic, you know, lights and stuff, these are
- 8:39curated smells for your cars. And so this lady was telling me
- 8:45through the story. And because Range Rover
- 8:48partnered with them, we got a free, free package of it.
- 8:52So you basically they've curated from around the world these
- 8:57different experiences and they put them through a diffuser,
- 9:00which you can either hang from your wing mirror, your rearview
- 9:03mirror, or you can plug into your your air vents.
- 9:08Yeah. And essentially you can have
- 9:11your car smelling. And apparently it's so popular
- 9:14that these millionaire billionaires will ship these
- 9:16kits to their cars around the world.
- 9:19So all their cars smell the same.
- 9:21So anyway, that was a Range Rover, Land Rover house thing
- 9:24that was quite cool. It wasn't as cool as that car
- 9:27which they were auctioning. So you couldn't you couldn't put
- 9:31a price on it because it was a one of one.
- 9:33They were accepting bids over the weekend and the person who
- 9:37bid the highest was going home with it.
- 9:40That's. Right.
- 9:42And it was that part of the proceeds are benefiting the
- 9:45Monterey Bay I think preservation group.
- 9:48That's funny the sales guy didn't tell me that bit.
- 9:51There's several names. Yeah, part of the money.
- 9:55The money is going to that. But I thought.
- 9:57And, yeah, I saw that. I saw on Instagram that you had
- 10:00gotten to see the cartoon. I mean, this is how little we
- 10:02saw each other. But I think one of the coolest
- 10:05things about the car was the attention to detail in the seat
- 10:10fabric and upholstery and part of the seats.
- 10:13They had designed it to look like the crashing waves.
- 10:16And so it had shimmering threads in the fabric and, you know,
- 10:20kind of variegated. And it was beautiful, but it was
- 10:23really interesting to hear about that attention to detail.
- 10:27And then the way they had done the paint, it was sort of an
- 10:30ombre, you know, darker blue, lighter blue to again, like
- 10:34indicate and sort of be tribute to the waters of the Monterey
- 10:38Bay and really unique. Did you say ombre?
- 10:42I did. They should have called it the
- 10:44ombre. They could.
- 10:47They should have asked. Us What happened to that Ford
- 10:49position? Looking for the nomenclature
- 10:50specialist? Right.
- 10:52I'll tell you what happened. I clicked on it today.
- 10:54I was going to apply and it's closed.
- 10:55So there goes that dream. Wow.
- 10:58So congratulation to the new nomenclature expert at Ford.
- 11:01We'd love to have you join us. That's right.
- 11:03I can't wait to hear what you come up with.
- 11:06Right. Oh, Asilomar is taken, just so
- 11:08we're clear. The Asilomar.
- 11:11Yeah. What does that mean?
- 11:12Yeah. Oh, that's the Bay.
- 11:15It's. The name of the Bay.
- 11:17The name of the Bay? OK, I didn't know.
- 11:19Yeah, Solomon Bay, I think, OK. That makes sense.
- 11:24Yeah, it was beautiful. And it was.
- 11:26It was all blue like with the exception of the white
- 11:30porcelain. Part of the door cards was white
- 11:33porcelain, but the rest of it was all different shades of
- 11:35blue. If you want to see a video of
- 11:37it, it's on my Instagram. OK, that's right.
- 11:40What's your Instagram, Dan? Just in case people don't know.
- 11:44Range Rover for hire at D9NN YP. There you go, there you go.
- 11:53I think that night was also the Evans party.
- 11:55Some of us made it, some of us didn't.
- 11:57I ended up getting together for dinner with our local Denver
- 11:59McLaren Rep, which was which was fun.
- 12:01Had a nice meal on the harbor, which was cool.
- 12:05Of course we went to dinner and at a pasta place on the water,
- 12:09which seemed to didn't quite track for me, so we all ended up
- 12:13ordering a lobster ravioli. But anyway, the Vance party here
- 12:16was a good time and it's some some friends.
- 12:20It was fun. We saw the Deisties.
- 12:23If you're ever at a party you want to be with the Deisties
- 12:26because they were really long line for pizza and I don't quite
- 12:29know how but John convinced the guy cooking the pizzas to swap
- 12:33the pizzas for beer. So we managed to skip the line
- 12:35and grab 2 fresh pizzas. That's amazing.
- 12:40Yeah, hands, hands down to John, who Yeah played the system and
- 12:45won. Yeah, and if you don't know John
- 12:47Dyste, he is the Porsche salesperson you want.
- 12:50He's at Porsche Colorado Springs, and he swears he can
- 12:54get you any car you want at sticker.
- 12:56So I'm not kidding. Now you know and he can swap.
- 13:00A nice what now? All right, cars, it's TS, you
- 13:04name it. Yeah, give him a call.
- 13:07Yeah, anyway. But Lewis?
- 13:10Yeah, they really are. So Lewis is his son and his dad.
- 13:12Todd was there, and Todd are here.
- 13:13He's a cool guy. We all came to the conclusion
- 13:16that he looks exactly like a young Roger Penske.
- 13:18I don't know why this hadn't crossed our minds before, but it
- 13:22is true. And I think he got a couple
- 13:25second glances. I think you got a couple of
- 13:28passes to different areas because they look like Roger
- 13:30Pensky. You're the guy with a Porsche
- 13:32963. They thought so, anyway.
- 13:34Yeah, they thought that Todd looked like Roger Pensky.
- 13:37Yeah, that's amazing. Yeah.
- 13:39He got into Casa Ferrari and I think it was partly because they
- 13:42thought he was Roger Pensky. You.
- 13:44Guys, Roger Pensky's here and he didn't bring the 963, but it's
- 13:48OK. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 13:50I didn't see him in one, but he should definitely wear a Pensky
- 13:52hat next. Year.
- 13:53There we go it. Doesn't already?
- 13:54Yeah, it. Doesn't really complete the
- 13:55illusion. Yeah, absolutely.
- 13:57It was like one year at the Quail.
- 13:58I don't know if you guys remember, but there was a fake
- 14:00Brad Pitt. When was that?
- 14:04It was about 3 years ago and there was rumours he'd bought
- 14:07this house in Carmel and he was just finishing the filming of
- 14:12the movie, the F1 movie, and there was a guy who looked just
- 14:15like Brad Pitt, but it wasn't Brad Pitt walking around the
- 14:18quail. So all these people were after
- 14:20selfies and stuff with the fake Brad Pitt?
- 14:24Brad Pitt, impersonator. Extraordinary.
- 14:26It's just Dan Pilling, sorry to disappoint.
- 14:29Yeah. Disappointing.
- 14:30Like, I didn't know Brad Pitt was British.
- 14:32Yeah, just go ahead. Well, the next day I think was
- 14:37was the first sort of big event, right signature event and that's
- 14:40the quail one. If you don't know, the quail is
- 14:41really, I think, becoming, you know, one of the go to car week
- 14:46things. Maybe, you know, maybe second
- 14:47only to to Pebble at this point, But they're they're different,
- 14:51different animals for sure. And right.
- 14:52How do you? Describe talk about them like in
- 14:55the same breath, in terms of like comparisons.
- 14:57Yeah, yeah, yeah. How would you describe Quail
- 15:01versus Pebble for those who haven't been to Car Week?
- 15:03A lot of new car announcements, more modern cars, right?
- 15:10Oil is much less classic cars. It's much more.
- 15:12The manufacturers are there with a reveal, especially if you get
- 15:15to go early in the morning, which is when they do, they call
- 15:18them the press conferences and that's when they're unveiling
- 15:22all of the new cars that then you can walk around and see
- 15:24during the day. And there are some classics, but
- 15:27Pebble is primarily focused on classic cars and, you know, the
- 15:32real true collectors like examples.
- 15:37I think one of the bigger differences is when you go to
- 15:40quail, if you have a ticket and you get in, everything is like
- 15:45they really roll out the red carpet in terms of the
- 15:47experience. There's you know, 5 or 6 giant
- 15:49tents with different themed food.
- 15:51There are lemonade stands, ice cream stands.
- 15:56Champagne on the way in, you know.
- 15:58Right. Champagne on the way in.
- 15:59It's it's inclusive. Whereas Pebble is different in
- 16:04that way. You know, if you don't know
- 16:05somebody or if you don't have access to a sweet or hospitality
- 16:09or a manufacturer's, you know, tent area, people will bring in
- 16:14like picnics on the lawn and Pebble.
- 16:16But quail is much more, sort of like feeding you almost against
- 16:22your will. Yeah, it's kind of the the
- 16:24Pebble of the people, right. And it's, it's a little, Yeah,
- 16:27it's a little more. The people who can.
- 16:29Start the deal. Right, the rich people.
- 16:32Right. Yeah, yeah.
- 16:33Yeah. But I think what's interesting
- 16:35is that all of the, at least a lot of the exhibitors or
- 16:40manufacturers, you know, Myers Banks is there, Roof is there.
- 16:43Yeah. And they have started even
- 16:45having like they always had water and champagne, But I know
- 16:49last year, you know, roof had breakfast burritos if you got
- 16:51there early enough. Myers Manx has amazing sun hats
- 16:54that they've been known for. So it's sort of there's, it's
- 16:58like party favors non-stop quail.
- 17:01Speaking of roof, I saw no roof underwear, but I did get my roof
- 17:05hat. So excellent.
- 17:07Like nice. It was pretty police.
- 17:10Did you go in Austin if they had any patents?
- 17:13Well, even the hat was difficult, let me tell you,
- 17:15because they don't just hand them out when you go up.
- 17:19You got to sort of have a conversation and they kind of
- 17:21hint at the hat and they grow them back and it's a big
- 17:23production. They get out-of-the-box.
- 17:24They they kind of punch it into shape.
- 17:26I can't imagine what they do if they had undies but but I I
- 17:30think it's it's. Much more awkward for everyone.
- 17:35Yeah, it's and I still mean it. I would absolutely wear those in
- 17:38the outside roof, But but I, I think, you know, it's kind of
- 17:42proof of the, the accessibility right of, of the thing.
- 17:45You can go up and you can talk to Aloise roof, right, and the
- 17:47roof family. You can go and go up and you can
- 17:49talk to the engineers, the people that built the cars.
- 17:51You can get yourself a hat, right, But that's everywhere.
- 17:54You can, you can go to go to singer and talk with our, our
- 17:56friend Seamus, right? And he'll spend time at the end
- 17:59and regale you with great stories, right?
- 18:02You know, and there's all this like amazing hardware like Roof
- 18:05and like Singer, but then there are concept cars and then
- 18:08they're like these these newcomers, right, with this like
- 18:11amazing stuff you've never seen before.
- 18:13Like is it a Chentria? Is that the name of the the
- 18:18Italian outfit that that is that?
- 18:21The Diablo 1. Yeah, reimagines the Diablo
- 18:23ones. Yeah, I know I'm, I'm butchering
- 18:26that, that name. But it's just like stuff you
- 18:27didn't even know existed till you, you know, you show up at at
- 18:30the wheel and you can go up in these.
- 18:32Right, so our friends from Colorado Springs had a car.
- 18:35Yeah. Absolutely.
- 18:37So Joe and team have built a a super off road.
- 18:42So I think like a Dakar on steroids.
- 18:45They built it with Ramon. Dumas, Dumas to eat it, Yes.
- 18:51So they had, they had a stand. So I managed to catch up with
- 18:56them and I probably just interrupted your train of
- 18:58thought, Ryan, but no, no. And I think they're going to
- 19:01build 10 of those and put them up for sale so we can all go in
- 19:05on one. But there we go.
- 19:06They're really something to behold.
- 19:09And we can get to the Porsche party later.
- 19:11But I do believe that they got pulled over on the way in that
- 19:14car. So, well, look.
- 19:16At that, they were just showing up.
- 19:19Yeah, there's a bit more of a story to that because I caught
- 19:22up with Joe and we were talking about the car.
- 19:26And I said, are you going to come to the Porsche party
- 19:28tonight? And he went, yeah.
- 19:29And I went, you know what you should do?
- 19:30And he's like, what I said, park that red car in front of the
- 19:35Porsche party. You'll get so much press.
- 19:37You'll get so much photography. And he's like, that's a good
- 19:40idea. So I am in an Uber coming down
- 19:44to the Porsche party. And as I'm coming down, I see
- 19:48that he's been pulled over by the cops.
- 19:50So now I automatically feel guilty because it was my idea
- 19:53that he brought the car down, but apparently Justin had a
- 19:59permission to pass permission to drive slip.
- 20:02So actually the police just wanted to have a look at it and
- 20:05they let him off. That's someone else I didn't see
- 20:07but for 5 minutes all car we got called Justin Underwood from
- 20:11Porsche Colorado Springs. So.
- 20:12I know I didn't see him at all. I mean, it's remarkable that we
- 20:16saw each other like a couple times each, honestly, when you
- 20:19think about our schedules and the number of people and the
- 20:22number of things that were going on.
- 20:24I know, I know. Well back to the quail, though,
- 20:27you know, it's always amazing, right?
- 20:29I, I, I, I've talked last year about arriving to car week and
- 20:32I, I'm seated in a restaurant next to James May right, right.
- 20:36And this year I had a similar experience where I'm at one of
- 20:39these many food stations at the quail and I've gotten my food
- 20:43and my friends are coming back, My group are coming back with,
- 20:46with drinks. And so it sort of saved room for
- 20:48them. And this, this tall, handsome
- 20:51man kind of comes to the table so well, can I, can I sit across
- 20:53from you? And I and I said sure and didn't
- 20:55really think much about it. And then everyone else,
- 20:57including John Dyston, the people who are really no come
- 20:59back. And like, that's, that's, that's
- 21:01Timo. That's Timo.
- 21:02He's the the president and CEO of Porsche Cars North America,
- 21:06right? And then I clicked and then we,
- 21:09you know, and had a nice conversation, super nice guy.
- 21:12But this is the kind of stuff that happens at at the quail and
- 21:15throughout car week, right? You know I amazing people.
- 21:20Watching. Yeah.
- 21:24And I said to you he was in agreement that the GT 4 was the
- 21:29best carpools you made. I did hear that now there must
- 21:31have been. There might have been something
- 21:32lost in translation, but it may have been 4 point OGTS.
- 21:38But yeah, it's I, I did overhear a couple, you know, they look
- 21:43like they, they were a moneyed couple.
- 21:44But I, I did hear a man at the quail tell his partner that this
- 21:49is lovely. But it's good to know that we're
- 21:51worth as much as everyone else here.
- 21:54Wow. And that's, that's a flex, yeah.
- 21:58There you go. Well, that.
- 22:00May not have been true, but. That is one of the ways that
- 22:04quail has been evolving. And I've heard people comment
- 22:07like, and I know Matt Farah related this story last year,
- 22:10but part of the reason that the hypercar manufacturer, supercar
- 22:15manufacturers, the more modern, you know, current manufacturers
- 22:20display there is because they, and we talked to Johnny about
- 22:23this a little bit too. But they are able to debut a
- 22:26car. And you know, I'm sure there's
- 22:29some technical definition, you know, fudging, but basically
- 22:33sell out at the quail. And you know, Matt heard a
- 22:38couple, like you said, Ryan, they were talking and he
- 22:41overheard them and I don't know which manufacturer they were at,
- 22:44but they were debating which colors to get.
- 22:46And they said, OK, well, this one's going to be this and this
- 22:48one's going to be this. And that is a big part of that
- 22:51event is the manufacturers and they bring in their clients and
- 22:55everybody's shopping. Yeah, and something to remember
- 22:58for those, for those of us who aren't shopping to maybe not
- 23:00take up too much time of these folks who are there and
- 23:04accessible because there are actually people, you know,
- 23:07throwing down dollars and, you know, and that does happen.
- 23:11And I, you know, I, I hope that we get to that point where we
- 23:14can do the same. But for now, it's a spectacular
- 23:17place to window shop. And, you know, I, I guess so.
- 23:20Favorites from the Quail. Dan.
- 23:24I liked the Golden Murray S1, which is a they're, they're very
- 23:32careful to say it's not the evolution of the McLaren F1, but
- 23:37it looks very much like the evolution of the McLaren F1.
- 23:40And yeah, that that car for me was the one of the show.
- 23:44Yeah, Yeah. Would you think that and what do
- 23:49you think about it right as as an evolution, because I think we
- 23:52all hold the F1 as up as sort of the the Holy Grail, like the the
- 23:56alpha and the Omega, you know, of, of, of super cars, right?
- 23:59And I think it is right. But it's, it's, you know, it's
- 24:02also been a few years. I like this new thing, but it
- 24:08also wasn't as pure in form as the original car right.
- 24:12And I think that's one of the things that that makes that car
- 24:15beautiful. That said, you know, you can't
- 24:19look the same and I thought they did a hell of a job of evolving
- 24:21that original shape, but that was definitely one of the stars
- 24:25of the show for sure. The quail is tough.
- 24:28If you've never been to the quail, it's it's really a it's
- 24:30a, it's a spoil of riches, right?
- 24:32There are things that I heard people talk about later that I
- 24:34didn't even see, right. Don't even ask me where they
- 24:36were because I didn't even see them, right?
- 24:40You know, but it's, it's, it's like the world's best, like
- 24:44State Fair, right? Like, you know, where you look,
- 24:46there's a booth or something cool.
- 24:48You know, it, it's just, it's overwhelming.
- 24:50It's overwhelming. But what were your two favorite
- 24:53cars? Me.
- 24:56Well, either of you. Yeah, in any order.
- 25:00I really like the the Porsche Roman Dumas one like, and I
- 25:05don't know what they're calling it, but I just I love the
- 25:07concept. I thought Edith was such an
- 25:09amazing story and movie, and so I like that they're honoring
- 25:14that and sort of extending the story.
- 25:17But yeah, it's interesting, Ryan, that you said there's
- 25:20things you didn't even see. I know because that tells you,
- 25:23it tells you how much is there and in a much smaller space, I
- 25:27think, than Pebble. But it is, it really is like an
- 25:31overwhelming candy store for people that are car people
- 25:35'cause you go and it's just like, where do you even look?
- 25:37For yeah, yeah, yeah, I do believe that that car will be
- 25:39called the Luis Rs. Perfect, SO.
- 25:41You so you heard it here. 1st that's interesting because they
- 25:44have an Instagram account that's something completely different.
- 25:49Sorry to to piss on your call. What are they calling it?
- 25:51What are they calling? It so their Instagram account is
- 25:56Rd. which I'm assuming stands for Roman Dumat Rd. extreme with
- 26:02an E so it's Rd. dot extreme so if you want to follow them.
- 26:06And is it extreme did you say with an X?
- 26:08Starting it's EXT OK REME so Rd. Proper way of spelling extreme
- 26:15right. Just the normal way, yeah.
- 26:17Yeah, yeah, What about you follow them?
- 26:21Yeah, it's hard to say. I so I really like the singer
- 26:24that was there that meant D Green Was it the was it the DLSI
- 26:28don't even know. It was just fantastic.
- 26:30I, I, I would absolutely buy a singer if I had the money.
- 26:33But you know, I was really, really drawn in by those
- 26:37echentricas, I think is what they're called these, these.
- 26:40So it's this Italian firm talked with a guy in charge.
- 26:43He said he would come on the show.
- 26:45So maybe that's why I like the cars so much.
- 26:48But you know, you start with the Diablo, right?
- 26:51And we've always talked about like, what's the next singer,
- 26:54right? And, and I've made a case for
- 26:55the R1O7 Mercedes SLS, right, as a as a, as a car that it's got a
- 27:00great foundation. The Sky's the limit.
- 27:02And you know, as wonderful as they were, they maybe really
- 27:05weren't the Super light, you know, sports cars, you know,
- 27:09that that the name would would lead you to believe.
- 27:11But a lot of potential. They're everywhere.
- 27:13They can be picked up cheaply. OK, Diablo is not so much but I
- 27:17think the Diablo is a car right? That's got a lot of room for
- 27:20improvement. I tried to drive a Diablo a
- 27:23couple months ago. You know, this, it broke along
- 27:25the way, right? And So what they do is they,
- 27:28they find the, the, I think in the words of the, the founder
- 27:31and CEO, the, the worst Diablos they can find.
- 27:33As long as the engine is good, right, the body doesn't matter
- 27:36so much. So as long as it's got a good
- 27:37engine, a good drivetrain, these cars are good candidates.
- 27:41Now, I don't know how many Diablos they built, but it
- 27:43certainly wasn't like the 964 where they were grown on, you
- 27:46know, trees basically. You know, I I can't imagine it
- 27:51was we should look this up if there's only a way we could look
- 27:54this up. But I'm guessing there were, you
- 27:55know, a few 1000 Diablos ever built, maybe like low few
- 27:59thousand 23000 right, which is my guess.
- 28:02But but but but point is they they that's it's a car that was,
- 28:06you know, built in kind of a rough era for car building.
- 28:10And of course, you know, the Diablo, I think spanned 3
- 28:12different owners, right. So it's a car that you know that
- 28:16that I think can be improved. How many, Dan?
- 28:19How many? I would guess, and this is only
- 28:21a guess, that they were built from 1990 to 2001.
- 28:25I would guess in total they made 2884.
- 28:29I would guess of which 900 regular diablos, maybe 530 VTS,
- 28:35maybe 465 Vt roadsters, 30 GTRS and 337 Vt 6 liters.
- 28:47But that's only a guess. Rough estimates, of course.
- 28:51Well, let me let me let me wax poetic a little bit on these
- 28:53things, right. I should probably learn how to
- 28:55pronounce the name properly. But they take the Diablo and you
- 28:59know, all the stuff that, you know, we quote UN quote hate
- 29:01about the Diablo, right? The the interiors, the switch
- 29:04gear and all that is, is replaced.
- 29:06They, they, they expose the engine in a way that it's, it's
- 29:09visible. They, they, they tuck the, the
- 29:11tailpipes up in a way it's there's an artistry there, much
- 29:13like singer where things are just done right.
- 29:15You'd be hard pressed to point at something and say, Hey, I
- 29:18would have done that differently.
- 29:20And the interiors really are, are one of the parts of the
- 29:23Diablo that that are ripe for improvement.
- 29:25And and if you look at these cars, I think it's a chentrica
- 29:29cars on an Instagram, maybe a dot in the middle of those two
- 29:33words. But you know, the switch gear,
- 29:35right? The the interior.
- 29:37It is basically like much like a singer what those cars would be
- 29:40if they were built today. They're just fantastic.
- 29:44And just again, is it is someone you know who's had a career in
- 29:47design. You pick up on these little
- 29:49things, the textures, the shapes, they look appropriate to
- 29:51the car, but they're also executed a level that, you know,
- 29:55Lamborghini of of the 90s could never have imagined.
- 29:57So I don't actually know how much they cost, but if the donor
- 30:01car is 200 and some $1000, I'm guessing the final product is
- 30:05not a cheap 1. So check them out.
- 30:08They just the thing really just just pulled me over.
- 30:12There was also the is it the ring brothers that did that
- 30:15Aston Martin? That was beautiful.
- 30:17That was beautiful. Now the ring brothers, you know,
- 30:19I think they're from Wisconsin of all places, as am I so, but
- 30:23they they've never really been on my radar.
- 30:25I think they've done more traditional sort of restomod
- 30:28stuff. And this thing again takes a
- 30:30car, probably one of the, I don't know, one of the the
- 30:33lesser appreciated Aston's, although prices have come up a
- 30:36lot over the years. This original Vantage that they
- 30:38built, I guess 70s through the 90s, is that what you'd say,
- 30:42Dan? Yeah, it was.
- 30:43It was a public car, wasn't it? For a while.
- 30:45Yeah, yeah. Or not staying esque, right?
- 30:49Yeah, in the best way. But, but again, they've taken
- 30:53this thing and completely reinvented it in a way that just
- 30:56really elevates. And I think that's the test for
- 30:58these restomods, right? Are you genuinely improving
- 31:01right across the board with the with the end result?
- 31:03Because you know, some of these aren't right, Some of these
- 31:06don't right. We've all seen them.
- 31:08I won't name names, but these were two that really stood out
- 31:10to me as exceptional, exceptional end products.
- 31:14So. Well, and I think like you're a
- 31:17good judge because we've all been lucky enough to see, like
- 31:20you said, there are, you know, a good number of companies doing
- 31:24that with a variety of cars and we've all been lucky enough to
- 31:26see several of those in person. And so you do start to compare,
- 31:30but it also hones your ability to sort of discern who's doing
- 31:34it well and who's not. So that's really, I think it
- 31:37says a lot that those two were your favorites.
- 31:40Yeah, yeah. I mean, you know, because it is
- 31:43a, it's a crowded field, right? Right you.
- 31:46Know this, most of the time we're talking to people, right?
- 31:49You know, it's just we're running into friends, we're
- 31:51running into listeners, you know, we're meeting new people
- 31:54and and, and so there's, you know, there's a lot of yeah,
- 31:58there's very little like car sort of appreciating actually
- 32:00being done. Fortunately, unfortunately, but
- 32:03you know, these are these are cars that stood out, stood out
- 32:06to me. So I don't know.
- 32:09I think go ahead. Yeah.
- 32:10No, they, they do pack a lot into like not really that much
- 32:16space geographically. Yeah, but it takes a lot, like
- 32:21you said, because we're all lucky enough to know so many
- 32:23people at this point and, you know, enthusiasts, attendees,
- 32:27and we've all gotten to know people at the different
- 32:28manufacturers too. So like you said, to have any
- 32:32meaningful time with any of those people and then try and
- 32:34see all the cars, yeah, you would really need a couple days.
- 32:37Yeah, I know, I know. It's it's it's just like, just
- 32:41like that, but. But like, what an embarrassment
- 32:43of riches. No, it, it, it really is.
- 32:45It's just it's, it's turning into, like I said, one of the
- 32:47one of the must do events. Yeah, it's it's really, you
- 32:51know, formulating its own sort of flavor.
- 32:54I'm always impressed with what shows up.
- 32:55It's a good vibe. I mean, any, any place where
- 32:58they hand you a drink on the way in is a is a good place.
- 33:00And, you know, in my mind and, you know, it's just, it's just
- 33:05it's kind of a scene. It's sort of it's sort of the
- 33:07become the social hub. I think, you know, for for the
- 33:09week or, you know, a great kick off after after motor Lux, of
- 33:12course. Favorite food stand?
- 33:14What was your favorite? So they do these food stands.
- 33:16They do like kind of international cuisine, right.
- 33:19So there was French one, there's an Italian one, I heard the
- 33:23American 1 is pretty good. Didn't get to it, but I guess
- 33:25they had a mean burger. Mean slider.
- 33:27Where'd you guys go? Would you or did you even make
- 33:29it anything? Well, I think one of my
- 33:33favourites and I don't know, I didn't go this year, but the OR
- 33:38I didn't make it there, but the cotton candy, they had cotton
- 33:40candy and rose. Completely.
- 33:42There you go. And then it was just a little
- 33:44stand. But I think one other thing that
- 33:47is so unique to Quayle is the and it's not the Blue Angels.
- 33:51I don't know which planes it is, but it's a military jet fly
- 33:55over. Yeah, yeah.
- 33:57It's not The Who are the other ones, the red, I'm blanking, but
- 34:00it's like the Blue Angels and they do a fly over in the
- 34:03afternoon with the smoke and it's really stunning.
- 34:07And there's not a lot of carvings where they do that, no.
- 34:09No, it's also funny because the DJ knows it's coming and puts
- 34:13the old Top Gun music on. Yes, that's so if you, I
- 34:17remember the first time I was there and it happened and you're
- 34:19like, oh, Top Gun. Whoa, wait a minute.
- 34:23It's, it's just a, it's, it's a great event, you know, look
- 34:27forward to next year again, great to see so many people who
- 34:30listened to the show who came up and said hello and other things.
- 34:33And, and yeah, it's just, it's just a great kickoff for the
- 34:37week. You know, you mentioned not a
- 34:39lot of room maybe relative to, to Pebble, but I had a guy shut
- 34:44up Ryan in my group who I guess had, I'm going to say he wore a
- 34:48pedometer, but I don't think that's a thing anymore.
- 34:50He had like an Apple Watch, right?
- 34:51That kept track of his, his steps.
- 34:53And I think every day we were there, which was 5 days, I think
- 34:57we walked at least 6 1/2 miles each day that we were.
- 35:01We were you cover the. Exercise that I've had in the
- 35:03six months before. Yes, you end up covering so much
- 35:06ground and most of it on foot. Yeah, I remember last year, the
- 35:11first year I went, I decided it'd be a good idea to wear like
- 35:13nice shoes, like dress shoes. And this year I've just I've
- 35:16really get him, you know, myself to, you know, it's a nice clean
- 35:20sneakers, you know, every every day.
- 35:22I think that's that's the move. But anyway, so any other quail
- 35:27stuff of note before we move along?
- 35:31It's it's amazing. Yeah, it's the.
- 35:33It's the. Best in summary, yes.
- 35:35Yeah. So that that was a busy day
- 35:37because that was also, I don't know if either one of you got
- 35:39over to Radwood. We, of course we had Art
- 35:41Cervantes, one of the Radwood founders who's now with
- 35:43integrity. I got stuck in some of the
- 35:47famous car week traffic and did not make it, so I'm really
- 35:51curious to hear how it was. I was so sorry to miss it.
- 35:53Yeah, it was, it was cool. I found out later that it was a
- 35:55pop up. It wasn't like a full Radwood
- 35:57experience. I had gone to the Radwood event
- 36:00at Amelia last year in 24 and it was a huge event and, and this
- 36:04wasn't that. That said, it was still very,
- 36:06very cool. Unfortunate was kind of cool and
- 36:08misty that night, so it wasn't like the best for photo, you
- 36:11know, taking and on and all that, but it was a great event.
- 36:13There was some big I saw some some some big names there.
- 36:16I saw Camisa, I saw Ed Boley and some others.
- 36:19Think of a chance to cross paths with art.
- 36:21But how? Tall is Ed Boleyn.
- 36:24Did you see this? He stood next to Doug de Miro
- 36:27and made Doug de Miro look short.
- 36:30No way. Yeah.
- 36:31I'd never realized how tall he was.
- 36:33They're both tall and both much thinner than I expected them to
- 36:36be. So that, that, that kind of
- 36:38caught me off guard. But, you know, but yeah, both,
- 36:43both large, large gentlemen. And, you know, I don't know how
- 36:47they fit in some of the cars that they have driven or, or
- 36:49even own. I I saw Doug driving around in
- 36:52his Countach and I think Ed was in his.
- 36:55Was it his Diablo VS the Victoria's Secret car?
- 37:00We were all a little perplexed when we rolled up to Radwood and
- 37:03we see this Diablo. Of course, we've all heard of
- 37:04the SV, which was sort of a later Diablo when there was this
- 37:07car with that same font, that same script font, but it's a VS.
- 37:11And I think the story was that it was some sort of giveaway car
- 37:14or something for Victoria's Secret.
- 37:15Maybe they gave it to one of their models.
- 37:17You know, I, I don't know, I've got to do a little digging on
- 37:19that, but I believe that that's the car that he brought.
- 37:23And I think one the one, the whole thing with this, yes, you
- 37:26should. I mean, that's I.
- 37:27Mean, you know that's. Kind of peak Radwood, right?
- 37:29So. Well, they used to do those.
- 37:31It was like Victoria's Secret's version of the Neiman Marcus.
- 37:35Like, you know, the over the top dream Christmas gifts where
- 37:38they're like, there's one of these, you know, Neiman Marcus
- 37:40Lamborghinis. I wonder if they did that one
- 37:43year because they were trying to, to set, you know, they were
- 37:46trying to. Establish that for Victoria's.
- 37:48Secret too, just to guess, Just to guess.
- 37:50But maybe in 1998 they created 2 called the Victoria's Secret's
- 37:54edition. But again, it's it's just a
- 37:57guess, right? Like if you had to just like
- 38:00shot in the dark. Yeah, yeah.
- 38:03Was that Yeah, Because you remember they used to do those
- 38:05$1,000,000 bras covered in diamonds and they it was like
- 38:09the dream gift catalog. Or something.
- 38:11Yeah, yeah, apparently. Let's say maybe in the 1998 one
- 38:15that was an option. Wasn't there a car like covered
- 38:19in rhinestones or something that was driving?
- 38:20That was the Valkyrie. That was the Valkyrie, right?
- 38:23Someone had bedazzled the the Valkyrie.
- 38:27Because if the Valkyrie is not enough car for you, you bedazzle
- 38:30it, right? Yeah.
- 38:31Like how do we possibly top this?
- 38:33No, right. Hey, I mean, you know, so I
- 38:41think that Radwood this year and we'll talk about Concourse so
- 38:44Italiano, which was the next day, but that was part of
- 38:45something you called, it's called the paddock, which was at
- 38:49a place that was called Bayonet Black Horse, which is another,
- 38:52you know, apparently golf courses are, you know,
- 38:55everywhere on the Monterey Peninsula and that's where that
- 38:59was. But that that night was, you
- 39:01know, one of the only young parties that I think the three
- 39:03of us try never to miss. And that was the that is the
- 39:06aforementioned Porsche party. Why is that party so good?
- 39:10I love that party. I love the people I run into.
- 39:13The food is great, it's just a great scene.
- 39:16But I don't know. What's your take on the Porsche
- 39:18party and what makes it so great?
- 39:20I think it is, like you said, the food is great, the crowd is
- 39:24good. And it's so it has a similar
- 39:27feel to quail in the sense that once you're in, yeah, everything
- 39:31is included. Yeah.
- 39:32And I think the food really is delicious.
- 39:35It's high quality, it's unique, which is not always the case at
- 39:38an event like that where you're feeding a crowd.
- 39:40But it's it's really good. It's scallops, it's tomahawk
- 39:45steak. It's like, and it's free if
- 39:48you've got a ticket. And that's the that's what I
- 39:49mean. And that's that's the best part.
- 39:51You know, it's. Once you're in, you're in and
- 39:54it's a really fun crowd and it's a cool the barn location where
- 39:59they do it. The Barns at Cooper Molera is a
- 40:01really unique venue and I think plus there's an element of.
- 40:07You know, sort of exclusivity of like, did you get into the
- 40:09Porsche party? So it you know, it feels nice to
- 40:11get in. Without rattling off the famous
- 40:14faces, there were some key folks there that we were rubbing
- 40:19elbows with and it was just a lot of fun.
- 40:21But everyone was at ease. It was cool last year.
- 40:23I didn't see him this year, but last year we ran into.
- 40:26Andreas. Andreas Bruniger Yeah.
- 40:29GT Mr. GT himself didn't see him there this year, did you?
- 40:33I don't think he was saying that this year.
- 40:35Obviously we saw some other other folks, but yeah, great
- 40:37night. We actually got to catch up a
- 40:39little bit there. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 40:42What? Did you guys get to see the 963
- 40:45while you were there? Yeah.
- 40:47Yeah, but we should probably explain that Lindsay wasn't
- 40:50there this year. And you know, that's not because
- 40:52she didn't get an invite, it's because you got a better invite.
- 40:56I I'm just realizing, no, you were there.
- 40:58See, it's hard to keep all this straight.
- 41:00I know well we were all there together last.
- 41:03Year that's. Super fun and that was I think
- 41:05that was the only time that we were all together last year was
- 41:11at the Porsche party because again, we all had such different
- 41:15schedules. But no, this year unexpected
- 41:18like last minute. I had a plan my my whole Friday
- 41:22changed, which I think is also very indicative of car week.
- 41:26If you are, you know, trying to do all these different events,
- 41:30you go into it thinking, OK, I know what my Wednesday looks
- 41:33like. I know what my Thursday looks
- 41:34like. Thursday night, my Friday
- 41:37completely changed, but in the best way.
- 41:41I ended up getting to attend the Haggerty House reception for the
- 41:45checkered flag 200 and and the there was a Ferrari group that
- 41:49was also there and that was really fun.
- 41:53Great house. And it was not far from the Land
- 41:57Rover House, which is where I ended up going next for a dinner
- 42:00with some clients, but also a lot of members of the media.
- 42:04There were people from Edmonds and Maxim and then some
- 42:07freelancers. And my new friend Scott Brady,
- 42:10who is the editor of Overland Journal.
- 42:13He's the one that drove the Defender that I wrote in on the
- 42:15tour. And then some of the members of
- 42:18the Jaguar and Land Rover PR team who have gotten to know.
- 42:22So I got to go have dinner at the house and, you know, hang
- 42:25out with all the all the all of them.
- 42:28And it was really fun. We should probably explain what
- 42:32this concept of, of, of houses is, right, Much like, I guess
- 42:37Harry Potter or college. There are these houses,
- 42:42generally mansions in the Carmel, Monterey area that are
- 42:46either owned or, you know, taken over for the week by OEMs, other
- 42:51automotive entities, insurance companies, you know, others.
- 42:56And it's, it's, it's where a lot of the action is.
- 42:59We get to where a lot of the the great parties are a lot of the
- 43:03media events. I got to go to.
- 43:05Thank you to you, Lindsay, the Haggerty house.
- 43:07I think the following day for a media event and, and got got to
- 43:12to sit in with for a really great presentation by our friend
- 43:17Sasha Neilu cars. It was fascinating.
- 43:20It was great. Got to ask questions.
- 43:22We got to walk through the whole design process.
- 43:24And yeah, it's it's just, it's I think it's a concept that's kind
- 43:27of unique to car week, you know, and, you know, just one of
- 43:32those, one of the many things that makes car week special.
- 43:35And I think, you know, one of the one of the nice things
- 43:37about, I guess being in the business, if you want to call it
- 43:39that, or, you know, doing a podcast or writing or whatever,
- 43:43as you get access to some of these things.
- 43:45And, and it's just, yeah, it's a, it's a pretty neat perk and,
- 43:47and, and kind of cool concept, so.
- 43:50So you had a good night, Ed Ryan.
- 43:52Like when you cross the Monterey County line, there is like a
- 43:54sorting hat, like momentarily. I was wondering who range where
- 44:00we were going to play in Quidditch that's.
- 44:03BMW because they were right next door.
- 44:05So that's right, they're the first tier and then they work
- 44:08their way up the bracket. So I hear, I hear Jaguar is an
- 44:10easy mark these days. But, you know, hey, what do we
- 44:14talk about that Jaguar that showed up at the Quail Like that
- 44:17was the car. That was the car that was in,
- 44:19you know, the buzz was all about, you know.
- 44:21Right. Well, and it was at Motor Lux as
- 44:23well. OK.
- 44:24And then, yeah. I'm sure, yeah, yeah, Motor Lux
- 44:27is where we saw it. Yeah, first.
- 44:29And then they had a like a design studio in downtown
- 44:32Monterey that they had it on display on Saturday and they had
- 44:36the car and they had a forum with some of the designers and
- 44:40you could get up close. I mean, I don't know about you
- 44:42guys, but it was wild to see it in person after having seen all
- 44:46of the print and the media and obviously all of the discussions
- 44:49and the buzz and the opinions to walk in and see it in person.
- 44:53I had a moment of like, that can't be real.
- 44:55Like, wait a minute. Yeah, there it is.
- 44:57And it's huge. Yeah.
- 44:59And it's what, what would you call the color?
- 45:02It was kind of a. Oh, it's like a brilliant, like
- 45:06super intense. So Ford used to have a color
- 45:10similar to that called moonlight Blue and it's just this very
- 45:14intense. It's like if you've seen the
- 45:15Range Rover Sport SV they. Were really that's.
- 45:20Very intense. Yeah.
- 45:21Royal blue metallic. And it was like that, but in a
- 45:24matte. Yeah, yeah.
- 45:26Like this almost, it's like almost purple.
- 45:28You almost can't see it. It's such an.
- 45:29It absorbs light, you know? Yeah, and I got to say it's not
- 45:34a bad looking thing. I think people just again, we've
- 45:36talked about this ad nauseam, but I think it's just it's just
- 45:39departed so much from the the design language of Jaguars as
- 45:43we've known it. So good on them.
- 45:45It was kind of like a flex right to to, you know, have that thing
- 45:48front and center right at these at these events.
- 45:51But. Well, and it was, there was
- 45:53something, and I don't know what the experience was for you guys.
- 45:56There was something about seeing it in person, and maybe it was
- 46:00because we've seen all the pictures.
- 46:01It wasn't the initial shock that we all had when it first debuted
- 46:05in the ads and all the media, but it was less stark or less
- 46:11aggressive visually in person than it was in the photos.
- 46:15I thought. Yeah, yeah.
- 46:16Yeah, you're absolutely right. Speaking of cars and Speaking of
- 46:20houses, I had a, a funny story. You went to the you went to all
- 46:25these houses? Yeah, we, we got an invitation
- 46:27somewhere on the week to go to the Koenigs Egg house.
- 46:30OK, Now, Koenigs Egg is not a, you know, a car, you know, I'm
- 46:34super familiar with. I appreciate them.
- 46:36I think they're awesome. There's always the question,
- 46:38Koenigs Egg versus Pagani, which, what do you got right?
- 46:41I've always claimed Koenigs Egg. I just, I've always liked the
- 46:43way they looked. Obviously, they're amazing
- 46:45performers. They're doing some amazing
- 46:47things. Christian von Koenigs Egg was
- 46:49making the round at Car Week. It didn't quite work up the
- 46:53courage to say hello to him, but somewhere along the line we got
- 46:55an invitation at the Koenigsegg house.
- 46:57OK, nice. So three of us roll up.
- 46:59It's my buddy Colin Seckle who you both know had a Range Rover
- 47:05Sport for the week and I've got thoughts on that which we can
- 47:08come back. He toned it down this year then.
- 47:11What's that he? Toned it down this year because
- 47:14last year he. Had that was electric Gummer.
- 47:16Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. And that's when those were
- 47:18pretty new. And I think, yeah, we had people
- 47:21taking pictures and it was, yeah, it was, that was and it
- 47:23didn't fit anywhere. This was at least a slightly
- 47:25smaller car. Yeah, that was an enormous car
- 47:28for Carmel. So this was a Range Rover Sport,
- 47:31a nice appliance, white right from the rental condo.
- 47:34It was a great, you know, vehicle to shuttle around in.
- 47:36But so Colin was driving. Colin's a big dude.
- 47:39I'm not a small guy. I'm in the, the passenger seat
- 47:42and in the back seat we have our, our friend Brian Rudin.
- 47:44And, and if you listen to the show, you know, Brian, because
- 47:48he's got an amazing garage and he's let me drive some of his
- 47:50cars to write about for, for auto blog and, and to talk about
- 47:53here. So we, we roll up to this house
- 47:56and you kind of picture it. It's, it's much like the
- 47:58Haggerty house or one of these others where, you know, it's a,
- 48:01it's a driveway off a residential St. you know, kind
- 48:04of tree lined, but it's a house, right?
- 48:06It's not, you know, it's not a parking lot.
- 48:08There's a little driveway. And so we go in and we see two
- 48:10Koenigs eggs, 2 Koenigs egg cars on the left and then a couple of
- 48:14obvious like rental cars on the right.
- 48:16What was it? BMW and was like a Chevy Malibu
- 48:17or something. But there's really only room for
- 48:19those four cars, right? And we just thought it was
- 48:23strange. Maybe there's a shuttle we
- 48:24missed that we should have taken or whatever.
- 48:26And but it's, it's, it's, it's strangely quiet.
- 48:29So we roll up in this thing. And again, there's one way in,
- 48:31one way out. And there were three or four
- 48:34sort of lean young Swedish, you know, men polishing cars and
- 48:40just sort of, you know, I don't know, hanging out.
- 48:43I thought you were about to say masseuses.
- 48:45But they could have been masseuses.
- 48:46They could have. What I found was.
- 48:48Interesting. To find out, Dan.
- 48:51They were all like dressed in like, do you remember parachute
- 48:53pants back? They seemed to sort of have like
- 48:56these sort of fitted sort of, you know, suits on like
- 48:58parachute pants, white T-shirts. And then they all had the
- 49:00Koenigs egg ghost. If you know the Koenigs egg
- 49:02coast, it's a ghost. It's this, I think sort of this,
- 49:05this Air Force, Swedish Air Force derived symbol.
- 49:07I think the company started in a former Swedish Air Force hangar
- 49:10or something. All had these.
- 49:12So it was, I don't want to say cult like, but they were all
- 49:15kind of dressed the same and then all had these medallions
- 49:18around their necks. And so we roll up and and Konig
- 49:21Zegg, if you're listening, this is this is these are just
- 49:24observations. I very, very much want to be re
- 49:27invited next year. So we roll up and we're kind of
- 49:30thinking someone's going to come out to greet us, tell us where
- 49:32to park, that kind of thing. And you know, the one young
- 49:35Swedish fellow comes up and Colin rolls down his window and
- 49:41he looks in and he sees Colin and he looks at me and he sees
- 49:44Brian in the back seat. And he kind of, I don't know,
- 49:47hangs out, you know, over the, over the, the window that's
- 49:50down. And he looks hussy and, and he
- 49:53goes, hey, what's going on? And Collin says, I don't know,
- 49:56you tell me. And the guy from Koenigsay goes,
- 50:01well, what are you looking to do?
- 50:05And none of us really know how to reply.
- 50:08And it felt very illicit. You're like, hold on, what are
- 50:12the options? And yeah, and this conversation
- 50:19went back and forth a few times. It was very awkward and strange.
- 50:23And, and, you know, we we had on, on good authority that we
- 50:26were welcome to stop by any time that it was an open house,
- 50:29right. And, and finally, you know, it,
- 50:33it came out that Oh, well, well, well, the, the, IT wasn't an
- 50:38open house, but we were welcome to, to park and, and check out
- 50:42the cars if we want it. But, but, but the family, as
- 50:46they refer to it was all gone. They were out and about.
- 50:48They would be back later and we could come back later if we
- 50:50wanted. And, and we just decided to sort
- 50:54of cut our losses and slowly back.
- 50:58It was very Swedish Children of the Corn is what I'm getting at.
- 51:04Which is atypical for car week, but that's why you go.
- 51:08I'm wondering if that's the title for our show.
- 51:13Ain't no corn like Swedish corn. But it was, you know, I want to
- 51:18say they weren't friendly because they weren't.
- 51:19I think they were just genuine, genuinely perplexed, as were we.
- 51:23And, you know, I'm sure not many people have the, you know, have
- 51:28the balls to drive right up to the Koenigsegg house without
- 51:30invitation, which I think it's what they thought we were doing.
- 51:34Or I thought, you know, we were in this Range Rover.
- 51:36Maybe they thought we were, I don't know, the protection for
- 51:39the guy in the back seat. Maybe he was a wealthy guy or
- 51:42something. It was so they didn't want to,
- 51:44they didn't want to, you know, tell us no, right.
- 51:47You know, they didn't want to, you know, ruin some potential
- 51:50deal or whatever because we've discussed these deals do happen
- 51:52during car week. They're trying to to divine who
- 51:55you're protecting in the backseat.
- 51:57And hell, Brian could buy a Koenig sack I guess is the is
- 52:01the thing too. But we slowly backed out, waved
- 52:04goodbye awkwardly, and we never saw the Koenigsegg family again.
- 52:10So anyway. So and you and Colin are
- 52:13available as security details for Nick Harvey?
- 52:15That's what I'm hearing. I don't know how threatening I
- 52:18am anymore. You know, you guys, you know I
- 52:20turn 50 tomorrow, 5th. Tomorrow.
- 52:23Oh, oh wow. In the sky or whatever.
- 52:26Yeah, yeah. Well, happy early birthday.
- 52:29Thank you. And if you're listening the day
- 52:31of the show, happy birthday. Yeah, and I I think we would ask
- 52:37everyone should send a message on his Instagram to wish him a
- 52:39happy. Day I'll take it anything that
- 52:42will lift me from the malaise of of what's officially I think old
- 52:46man era is are you? Entering your very own malaise
- 52:51era. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 52:55I am the equivalent of a 7.2 liter V8 that makes 120
- 53:00horsepower, right. That's is that what you're
- 53:01saying? At least you're not an old
- 53:03diesel that's. A No, no, that's no one of those
- 53:06Oldsmobile diesels which would, which would, you know, turn off
- 53:10cylinder banks and, yeah, really be ineffective now.
- 53:13No, I I'm going into this with a smile on my face.
- 53:17I think you know some new ideas about how to live life right.
- 53:21You know, things that you know 1520 years ago were vanity are
- 53:24now just about staying alive. I can.
- 53:28Show your back, it doesn't hurt. That's right, that's right,
- 53:30that's right. So I I do currently have a
- 53:33temporary crown on a tooth. So I am entering my 50s with a
- 53:37temporary crown. Just yet another reminder of of
- 53:40age and all that comes with it. But yeah, it's, it's definitely
- 53:47a new chapter. I'm writing an article right now
- 53:50about much of what we're talking about for Autoblog and it yeah,
- 53:54it started as sort of, you know, I don't know, I guess an ode to,
- 53:59to car week and, and has sort of devolved into I don't.
- 54:04Know reflections on. Reflection on on aging.
- 54:08Yeah. Check it out, it's great.
- 54:12It's a really uplifting read. That's what I'm hearing it is.
- 54:14And also you really know how to party.
- 54:19Absolutely, you know, but thank God for car week, right?
- 54:22I mean, because, you know, it does afford us these
- 54:24opportunities to live a little, right?
- 54:26And and you know, you don't think about politics, you're not
- 54:29checking the news. You know, you might as well be
- 54:3225 while you're there, right? And you know, it's, it's, it's
- 54:36just an amazing, amazing week. Like it is, it is a little bit
- 54:40of, it's like, it's like the dream week for car enthusiasts
- 54:45and people that love driving. And it's like we all agree to
- 54:48just suspend reality and just enjoy all of the crazy stories
- 54:52and opportunities that come our way.
- 54:54And it's magical. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 54:58There's definitely like a there's a high right that
- 55:01lingers right for a couple weeks at least.
- 55:04And Speaking of highs, should we introduce a competition this
- 55:08week? And do we think I think we
- 55:10should. So I think we announced a couple
- 55:13of weeks ago that we are lucky enough to have a sponsor for the
- 55:17show. We've got a few lined up, but
- 55:19this one in particular is Sheffield Watches.
- 55:22We've been fans of Sheffield Watches for, you know, quite a
- 55:25while now and, you know, actively bought our own watches
- 55:28and, you know, been fans of the brand.
- 55:32But as part of this sponsorship, we actually get to occasionally
- 55:35give watches away. This would be our first watch
- 55:39giveaway. So in honor of our first watch
- 55:42giveaway, and what we thought we would do is give folks a task
- 55:45and the very first person to complete the task will win the
- 55:49watch. It will be a watch of their
- 55:52choice from the Sheffield website, subject to
- 55:55availability. So we'll make our very best to
- 55:58try and get that watch. If not, we'll get a second
- 56:01alternative. And what we thought we would do
- 56:03is make it quite simple this time around.
- 56:05And we'll repeat this at the end of the show as well, just so
- 56:07that if people didn't get it in this first instance, they'll
- 56:10hear it at the end. What we'd like you to do is
- 56:12follow Sheffield Watches on Instagram and follow Sheffield,
- 56:17sorry, follow Sheffield Watches on Instagram and follow that car
- 56:20show on Instagram. Then what we would like you to
- 56:23do, and there's only two things you need to do here, the
- 56:25follows. And then go to one of the
- 56:28Sheffield Watches posts and comment on it and say at that
- 56:32car show and whatever watch you would like, that will
- 56:36automatically then appear in our feed and the very first person
- 56:39who does that will win themselves a watch.
- 56:43So just in a recap, follow 2 accounts that car show Sheffield
- 56:47Watches. Go on to Sheffield Watches, look
- 56:50at one of the posts and comment at that car show and what watch
- 56:54you would like. So it's pretty simple and it's
- 56:57probably the easiest way you could ever win a watch.
- 56:59So first listener, first giveaway.
- 57:02Good luck to you all. That's right and we should share
- 57:05the Sheffield Instagram is Sheffield under score all sport
- 57:09under score watches. So go check it out and I think
- 57:12the pink. I think I saw another post about
- 57:15the pink GT which. Yeah, just today.
- 57:17Unsurprisingly, very excited about it.
- 57:19So yeah, that's. A pretty that's a pretty great
- 57:22deal though, right? I'm I'm just saying, I mean you
- 57:24just you just have to be a early bird gets the worm or in this
- 57:27this case, the Sheffield watch. So can't wait to see who wins at
- 57:31that and we'll have more to come too.
- 57:32So if you miss out on this, just stay tuned.
- 57:37Sorry I. No, no, thanks for yeah, yeah,
- 57:40because we're at 55 minutes, I'm afraid, kind of on a tear here.
- 57:45So I'm glad you mentioned. That we haven't even done
- 57:47Sunday. Yeah, have.
- 57:49We let's talk about Saturday because Saturday at the end, I
- 57:52don't know what you were up to. I was at Concorso Italiana,
- 57:55which I'm happy to talk about, but you, Lindsay, were with our
- 57:58friends at Spikes Car Radio for a live recording, which that's.
- 58:01Right. I was at the Concord forums, the
- 58:05Pebble Beach forums where they do all different types of panel
- 58:09discussions. They had one with all women this
- 58:12year. They had Land Rover did 1.
- 58:14Scott Brady was on the panel. And they, as they've done the
- 58:18last few years, the Spikes crew did a live podcast as well.
- 58:22And I got to go, which was really fun.
- 58:25And I actually had my own reserved seat, which is always
- 58:28special. It's always nice to see your
- 58:30name and lights, as it were. And this one was a little more
- 58:37sort of exciting and interesting and notable getting started
- 58:41because Spike and Jerry and Paul were misdirected by the people
- 58:46managing traffic. And so the show was slightly
- 58:49delayed. They were fashionably late.
- 58:52I don't know if you guys experienced this, but the the
- 58:56sort of traffic wardens this year were collectively like
- 59:00across the board less informed and no patients this year, which
- 59:04was shocking on both counts. Yeah, yeah, I can only imagine
- 59:10what they put up with. So I'll cut them a brain, but I
- 59:12noticed that as well. Yeah, It was sort of like even
- 59:15going in, you know, knowing that, like, sure, yeah, it was
- 59:20fascinating. But so they sent the talent
- 59:24going the wrong way. So the show was a little
- 59:27delayed, but it was especially, we know what goes into a podcast
- 59:31and watching Spike handle it. He was such a professional.
- 59:36Yeah. He had no time to get set up, so
- 59:38he had to get set up in front of the audience and handled it like
- 59:41a pro. Yeah.
- 59:42That's the worst. That's the worst.
- 59:44But it was fun because Jerry actually was there this year.
- 59:46So he came out and chatted with Spike for a bit and, you know,
- 59:50obviously everybody should go listen to the show.
- 59:53But he talked a bit about, you know, this sickness that we all
- 59:56share as car enthusiasts and all of the feelings that we ascribe
- 59:59to these hunks of metal and rubber and, and we're all, you
- 1:00:04know, in it together. And then.
- 1:00:06Zuckerman and Matt Farah and Johnny came out and I had seen
- 1:00:10Matt on my drive in. He was showing some people he
- 1:00:14had his new Myers Manx there and I looked over and saw the Manx
- 1:00:18as I was driving by and then realized Matt was standing right
- 1:00:20next to it. Nice.
- 1:00:22So, so that was fun, but yeah, it was really fun.
- 1:00:25They did some listener questions.
- 1:00:26I did some giveaways. They had some of the Morris
- 1:00:29Solomon's license plate brands. I want one.
- 1:00:33Which was really fun and he gave.
- 1:00:35We know a guy though, so. I know fingers crossed we can
- 1:00:38make something work, but he gave away one of those spikes Car
- 1:00:42Radio Sheffield green watches which are.
- 1:00:45Great. Really great.
- 1:00:47And yeah, it was just, you know, it's always fun to see them and
- 1:00:50then got to say hi to everybody at the end and excellent.
- 1:00:54It's such a unique car week experience, I think.
- 1:00:57But they just announced they're gonna be doing one at, I think
- 1:00:59the odd rain this year, too. Fantastic, yeah.
- 1:01:02Yeah, go see them there if you're there.
- 1:01:04Back to your point about doing a show live, it is a lot.
- 1:01:08I, you know, one of my past podcast lives, I did 1 at an
- 1:01:12event called Zufengruppa here in Denver.
- 1:01:16And this was up in Boulder about an hour from my house.
- 1:01:18I get up there and realize the power cord to our mixer was back
- 1:01:22at home and it was no one's fault but mine and my wife was
- 1:01:24kind of have to go back. So I mean, I, I know what that's
- 1:01:26like. And then you have to be on and
- 1:01:27then you're in the heat and everything else and you've got
- 1:01:29to, you've got to make a show. And of course they're pros.
- 1:01:32But you know, it's, it's, it's a unique challenge and I can't
- 1:01:39wait to listen. I'm sure it's amazing.
- 1:01:41Right. Like you would never have known
- 1:01:43if you weren't in the room. Yeah.
- 1:01:45And it was, it was really impressive to watch.
- 1:01:48Like they you just, you got to roll with it.
- 1:01:49And they did. Yeah.
- 1:01:50What were you doing that morning, Dan?
- 1:01:53I can't talk about it. OK, one of those.
- 1:01:55OK, well, Dan's doing big things.
- 1:01:58I. Love it.
- 1:01:58Dan was providing his own private security for someone who
- 1:02:01cannot be named. Yeah, I was trying to stop
- 1:02:03people getting into the Koenigsegg house.
- 1:02:08Well, you are a life young Swedish boy, aren't you?
- 1:02:10You guys recognize each? Other but.
- 1:02:17I was supposed to get to the track, but I didn't get to the
- 1:02:19track unfortunately and just got waylaid with work and stuff.
- 1:02:23So, but yeah, it was an interesting afternoon.
- 1:02:28I didn't get to Concorde, to Italiano, which I wanted to get
- 1:02:30to. Was that again that?
- 1:02:32Was that was fun, you know. So again, it was at this this
- 1:02:34new, you know, this new space, I guess they call the pattern
- 1:02:39where Radwood had been the night before.
- 1:02:42And I was really impressed with the turn out.
- 1:02:45I mean, if you want to see oddball Italian shit, of course
- 1:02:47of Italiano is the place for you.
- 1:02:49You know, the Maserati Mistral or however you pronounce it,
- 1:02:54four of them. I mean, I don't think I'd ever
- 1:02:55seen one, right. There were, you know, like barn
- 1:02:59fine, you know, Dinos, right there were obviously was there
- 1:03:03was there was new stuff, but there was amazing stuff.
- 1:03:05There were there's a whole field of Alfa Romeos, right?
- 1:03:07Julia's in, in GTV, GTV sixes and you know, and you name it,
- 1:03:11they had it. New cars, old cars.
- 1:03:13Dan, I know you had an AR for the week and I want to hear
- 1:03:17about that in time. But I mean, there was new stuff
- 1:03:19like that. There was old stuff, there was
- 1:03:21oddball stuff. I met, ran into a guy came up to
- 1:03:24me and said, Ryan Barkey, I know he was a listener New West from
- 1:03:28from Instagram. And he won the Balboni award.
- 1:03:33Ethan, shout out to Ethan won the the big, the big award of
- 1:03:38the show presented by Balboni himself, who then went on to
- 1:03:41sign Ethan's car. So and Diablo.
- 1:03:46Yeah, he had a Diablo, I think, an early Diablo black car, much
- 1:03:51like our buddy Brians. So they got to meet.
- 1:03:53It was a really fun event. I was there again with Colin and
- 1:03:57Brian and shout out Dino and some of our other gang who was
- 1:04:00there. Yeah, well, if your name is
- 1:04:03Dino, you better, sure as hell better show up to the concourse
- 1:04:06of Italiano. But yeah, but I think one of the
- 1:04:09most fascinating things about the show was the woman who was
- 1:04:11showing a car, a modern Ferrari, on the lawn while also
- 1:04:15simultaneously selling exotic cats and possibly crypto.
- 1:04:19So that was fun. And did you just take one of
- 1:04:23each? You're like, I'll take a cat.
- 1:04:25I. Couldn't afford either.
- 1:04:26That's the problem. So I think the cat started at 10
- 1:04:29or 12 and I'm not sure where the crypto started or crypto began,
- 1:04:32but but it was it was actually a very fun event, very cool.
- 1:04:36You know, you know, I wasn't sure what to expect.
- 1:04:38And I was pretty impressed with some of the stuff that was that
- 1:04:41was there. Again, you only scratch the
- 1:04:43surface. You start talking to people, you
- 1:04:45know, but it was really, it was really a fun event.
- 1:04:49And I also then got to the track finally that day.
- 1:04:52Nice. You know, Lindsay, you and I in
- 1:04:56a former podcast life got to actually commentate races at
- 1:05:02last year's Rolex Historics. Do you recall the race that that
- 1:05:06you called? It was, I think the.
- 1:05:08It was the Ken Miles Trophy class.
- 1:05:10Right, right. And I got to do the F1 cars of
- 1:05:12the 70s and 80s, which I know nothing about.
- 1:05:15That's right. But we somehow survived and it's
- 1:05:18a feather in our caps. But we didn't get to do that
- 1:05:20this year, either one of us. No, but that I was thinking
- 1:05:23about it a lot. That was like one of the most
- 1:05:26amazing memories I know. There are literally like 1000
- 1:05:30speakers projecting the voice plus, you know, Goodwood network
- 1:05:33and all that. So it was, I'm glad I didn't
- 1:05:36know all that at the time. Yeah.
- 1:05:38Well, that was why I didn't go to the live Spikes last year was
- 1:05:42because I was busy commentating the reason.
- 1:05:44Exactly. So, you know, but but because we
- 1:05:47weren't doing that this year, I got to properly spectate and I
- 1:05:49got to make it up to the the infamous Corkscrew, which I
- 1:05:54don't care what anyone says, no photographs, no video, no video
- 1:05:58games really expresses what A what AI?
- 1:06:04Guess what do you call a feature that is?
- 1:06:06Remarkable. Like.
- 1:06:09Experience. You talk about things that would
- 1:06:11never be built like that now, but you're so glad they exist.
- 1:06:14And and that was one of them because it's this the elevation
- 1:06:1819. What's the opposite change?
- 1:06:20Change is, is is shocking. It's just it's and it's blind.
- 1:06:25And I just, I had no real appreciation for what that thing
- 1:06:28was like until I saw it with my own two eyes.
- 1:06:32And I'm so glad I did. It's such a great track.
- 1:06:34You know, it's so, so well run. You know, everyone there was
- 1:06:38friendly. It was, you know, and racing
- 1:06:41tracks. That's a whole different scene,
- 1:06:42right? But that's that's really how Car
- 1:06:44Week began That in Pebble, right?
- 1:06:47It was that in Pebble we were. So my family has been going for
- 1:06:50a long time. The first year that we went was
- 1:06:521997, and my dad commented at the beginning of the week this
- 1:06:56year, he was marveling at our first time going up and he said
- 1:07:02we got our hotel room and our tickets the week before.
- 1:07:05That would never happen. And we were saying the same
- 1:07:08thing. It was the vintage races and
- 1:07:09Pebble. It was not.
- 1:07:11It was not car week. Like to see the evolution of
- 1:07:14what it has become is really fascinating.
- 1:07:17Yeah. Yeah, I mean in the very best
- 1:07:19way. I'm sure the people that live
- 1:07:20there can't wait for it to be done.
- 1:07:21But I can also imagine the, you know, the the monies that are
- 1:07:25brought in and and you know, right.
- 1:07:27So I'm sure it's, you know, it's a give take kind of thing, like
- 1:07:30a lot of relationships, but but you know, it's the racing is
- 1:07:34great and you know, it's just, it's a great place to watch a
- 1:07:37race because there's so many vantage points.
- 1:07:39You don't have to walk quite as far as some tracks, right, in my
- 1:07:42experience. But then I think one of the
- 1:07:43highlights is walking the paddock, right and and seeing
- 1:07:46these amazing cars not only that are being driven on the track,
- 1:07:49but are also that are driven to the track.
- 1:07:51And and point of example is we saw this amazing red 250 GTO
- 1:07:55rolling up. It was our old friend Chip
- 1:07:57Connor behind the wheel. It took the time to say hello
- 1:07:59and and and, you know, share with us a little bit and and
- 1:08:03that's the magic of car week. That's the magic of of of going
- 1:08:06to the track, right. It's just you never know who
- 1:08:08you're going to see what you're going to run into the cars,
- 1:08:11famous cars you've only seen in books and there they are right,
- 1:08:14right, being started up. You can smell in here and it's
- 1:08:16just it's it's a. Well, I'm being raised.
- 1:08:19I mean, I think that's the crazy thing.
- 1:08:21Like, you know, you said like the class that I got to
- 1:08:24commentate last year, Jim Farley was one of the drivers like in a
- 1:08:27Cobra. I mean, it's just, it's like
- 1:08:29it's the wildest confluence of your heroes and these hero cars
- 1:08:34and, you know, famous people and people that are car famous and
- 1:08:38just regular famous. It's wild.
- 1:08:41Exactly the race that I commentated.
- 1:08:44Sorry, Dan, go ahead. You just kind of gave me a
- 1:08:46flashback. Yeah.
- 1:08:47At the quail, I met Jim Farley's son.
- 1:08:49Oh, you did. Oh yeah.
- 1:08:50Nice. I think you must be like 14 or
- 1:08:5315. Amazing, yeah.
- 1:08:54And I think you used to just random, sorry.
- 1:08:58No, they have the nicest family. It's.
- 1:09:00Also Wisconsin Do you do you? Do you see the theme here?
- 1:09:03We're. Fencing A thingy, yeah.
- 1:09:05That's that's that's right. That's right.
- 1:09:07Well, that night, just to move things along here a little bit,
- 1:09:10was the also infamous Zinger party.
- 1:09:13Were you all there? Were we all there?
- 1:09:15I can't remember. OK, Dan wasn't there.
- 1:09:18Lindsay, you and I were there. We actually got the catch up.
- 1:09:20I know how many people there. It was really, really cool.
- 1:09:24And it was. Amazing the people I met.
- 1:09:26And Matt Farah had actually emceed, they shared a
- 1:09:30documentary of what they've done with the car and they they did a
- 1:09:35tour of tracks in California, setting records at the various
- 1:09:39tracks and they made a documentary film.
- 1:09:41So it reminded me of going to see Edith with you guys last
- 1:09:45year. So apparently a theme for me for
- 1:09:47Car Week is I get to go see a documentary every year.
- 1:09:50I'm not sure what's going to be. Next.
- 1:09:52Year, it was really cool, yeah. And they even took the car
- 1:09:57through the drive, through it, in and out.
- 1:09:58Oh, I saw it. That was so so, so epic.
- 1:10:01Well, and I always joke, you know, like when people have
- 1:10:04these insane cars and they go, OK, but you'd never drive it.
- 1:10:07Like I always joke that if you're gonna get something like
- 1:10:10that, you have to just drive it as much as you can, take it to
- 1:10:12the market for eggs, whatever. Yeah.
- 1:10:14So that's my new like would you take it through the drive for it
- 1:10:17in and out? Has your GT4 been through the
- 1:10:19drive through Lindsay? Not yet, because it hasn't been
- 1:10:23near an in and out. Squad goals.
- 1:10:25Squad goals. Exactly.
- 1:10:27Well, Zinger famously, and we talked about this the last time
- 1:10:29we talked about car week had this this area 21.
- 1:10:32The car is called the 21 something or other.
- 1:10:35By the way, it's 2100 horsepower, right, which is, you
- 1:10:38know, that'll get you a record or two.
- 1:10:40But but last year they had this this amazing sort of area 51 or
- 1:10:44what's it every 50 themed alien UFOs, you know, and you know,
- 1:10:49lots of silver, you know, Lemay body suits and gyrating, you
- 1:10:54know, young people. And it was a blast.
- 1:10:56Didn't have that this year, but they did bring the Shake Shack
- 1:10:59burgers and fries out again at the end of the which was wildly
- 1:11:02appreciated. Legendary, yeah.
- 1:11:05So good. Yeah, they were in.
- 1:11:07They did gold this year, some of the women.
- 1:11:10Yes, yes. But it was not quite the over
- 1:11:12the top spectacle. I think they really focused on
- 1:11:13the achievements of the car and and all that and it was cool.
- 1:11:16Yeah. And again, I think as far as
- 1:11:18like value for dollar for like people that I bumped into that I
- 1:11:21met was introduced to for the first time or I'd, you know, met
- 1:11:24before that may have been the party.
- 1:11:27I think we picked up a few potential guests along the way.
- 1:11:30A couple. Commitments.
- 1:11:31Well, yeah. And our friend Mark from Horace
- 1:11:33Straps was there. Yes, Shaheen from Rivian was
- 1:11:37there, obviously Matt Farah. Retro Mobile.
- 1:11:41That I got to do, yes, that's right, we got to see Roma and
- 1:11:45Java from Retro Mobile. Yeah, they say they're coming
- 1:11:48on, so we'll see. I know.
- 1:11:50Look forward to it had that liquid courage and I was asking
- 1:11:53people left and right so it's moving on moving on.
- 1:11:57So the next day was Sunday, not a small day on in the car week
- 1:12:03calendar. So a three days start.
- 1:12:07Dawn Patrol. Dan, were you there for that?
- 1:12:11I wasn't. I caught up with Lindsay shortly
- 1:12:13afterwards. Didn't get a hat.
- 1:12:15But the interesting thing this year with the hats, yeah, was
- 1:12:18they have metal tags and I think they're numbered, aren't they,
- 1:12:21Lindsay? They are, Yep.
- 1:12:23So now you not only have to get a hat, but you have to get a
- 1:12:25good number, right? Like it's the Colorado Grand or
- 1:12:28the Amelia, right? That's.
- 1:12:30Right. Yeah, Seinfeld would probably
- 1:12:31not be pleased. I don't know what numbers I got.
- 1:12:3522 or nothing for me but right. Car numerology no yeah they have
- 1:12:40like authenticity they're. Amazing.
- 1:12:42Yeah, amazing. And that's that's, I think,
- 1:12:44because they're friends at Haggerty, right, That Hans is.
- 1:12:46Yes, Haggerty are the ones that distribute the hats and yeah,
- 1:12:50so. And the Donuts.
- 1:12:51And. The Donuts, Sorry.
- 1:12:53And the Donuts. And the Donuts.
- 1:12:55And the coffee. That's right.
- 1:12:56Yeah, well, I slept in, unfortunately what I miss.
- 1:13:00So it was beautiful and it was clear, which is really unusual.
- 1:13:03It was like the first year that it was clear at dawn patrol in a
- 1:13:07long time. The what?
- 1:13:08The weather the whole week was unusual because we had rain at
- 1:13:11the singer party, like actual rain the night before.
- 1:13:14But then it was clear, you know, there were stars in the sky on
- 1:13:17the way into dawn patrol, which was really cool.
- 1:13:19And I hadn't done it before and my dad and I went.
- 1:13:23So we got there just after 5:30. And what's interesting as you
- 1:13:26walk in, you kind of, you know, wind around the lodge on the
- 1:13:30road down and we came around the corner and the crowd was so big
- 1:13:33that we gasped because there were so many people there, which
- 1:13:36is quite a feat. And it tells you the draw of the
- 1:13:38hats that that many people have gotten up and gotten there by
- 1:13:425:30 in the morning. And what was interesting is how
- 1:13:45many people cleared out once the hats were distributed to the
- 1:13:50crowd really thins out. But we were able to get, yeah, I
- 1:13:54mean, we were able to get kind of right up to the chain where
- 1:13:57the cars were coming through. And we mentioned the Deistys.
- 1:14:01John and Lewis met us and we hung out for most of the parade
- 1:14:06as the cars were moved onto the lawn.
- 1:14:08But yeah, I mean, you could up close and personal with those
- 1:14:11cars and to see them driving, you know, it's another like the
- 1:14:15tour, the Tour de Pebble where you just, it's amazing to see
- 1:14:19them driven. And it was really cool because
- 1:14:22as the Land Rovers went through, my friend Lynn Woodward was
- 1:14:25driving one of them. So I got to say hi to her.
- 1:14:27And yeah, it's, it's definitely worth the early morning for
- 1:14:31sure. So one of the things that struck
- 1:14:34me during the tour with those same cars was, yeah, now maybe
- 1:14:37not the Land Rovers, not the sports cars, but some of those
- 1:14:39like brass era cars, some of those Pierce Arrows and
- 1:14:42Duesenbergs and those, you know, that type of, you know, the, the
- 1:14:45real, you know, the bespoke, the, you know, the coach built
- 1:14:49cars, right? They run silently.
- 1:14:51It's amazing. It's amazing, like.
- 1:14:54Yeah, you would expect much more.
- 1:14:57Noise. Yeah, it's a completely
- 1:14:58different kind of flex. You know, that's some, you know,
- 1:15:04some what's what's the the book? I mean The Great Gatsby, right?
- 1:15:07I mean that's, you know, that's these are the cars these folks
- 1:15:09were driven and that was the flex right.
- 1:15:11Now it's, you know, crackles and pops on your BMW, whatever.
- 1:15:14But back in the day, I mean that that's how cool they were,
- 1:15:16right? And and yeah, they're just.
- 1:15:18I just was so impressed with that.
- 1:15:19But so. On the to getting to see, you
- 1:15:23know, that's what struck me during the tour and then getting
- 1:15:26to see them again at dawn patrol is most people never see one of
- 1:15:30those cars on the road. That's it.
- 1:15:31That's. It and to get to see that
- 1:15:34collection of them all at once. And then some of them I saw
- 1:15:37driving twice getting to do the tour and dawn patrol.
- 1:15:41And you really one thing about the tour is that people camp out
- 1:15:44all along the route along Hwy. 1 and then at the turn out because
- 1:15:49it's you go out and back the same road.
- 1:15:53And so people know where the cars turn around.
- 1:15:55So they go up there and wait to see them turn.
- 1:15:58And if you've ever been to, you know, if people have been to
- 1:16:02Good Vibes, like on a Thanksgiving weekend or like a
- 1:16:06big day at Good Vibes, it was almost double that.
- 1:16:09It felt like at the turn out for the tour because people are just
- 1:16:14so excited. And it's like you think about
- 1:16:15how lucky we are to see these cars moving.
- 1:16:19Yeah, you. Know it's.
- 1:16:20It's amazing. Yeah, it really is.
- 1:16:22Dan, when did you enter into the picture, I guess?
- 1:16:26I think it was reasonable about 7:30.
- 1:16:28OK, so got in, managed to con someone into giving us a golf
- 1:16:35cart lift in. The best?
- 1:16:37It's always a good secret. You just can be lost, pass all
- 1:16:41the past, all the the Gen. pop and like, you know, like you're
- 1:16:44the king. It's the best.
- 1:16:46The way to do it. But yeah, so got to see quite a
- 1:16:49few of the cars, got to see the Deisties, so Lindsay and yeah,
- 1:16:53yeah. And then the sun came out and it
- 1:16:55was a beautiful day. Yeah.
- 1:16:56It was gorgeous. Yeah.
- 1:16:57Yeah. It was, it was warm when the sun
- 1:17:01came out, but it wasn't too warm.
- 1:17:02It was just kind of a perfect day.
- 1:17:04It was. It was absolutely.
- 1:17:05I mean, that setting is incomparable, right?
- 1:17:08Yeah. It's just, if you've never been
- 1:17:09there again, something that's not really captured, you know,
- 1:17:12in photographs, it's just it's a magical location and.
- 1:17:16Because there's something in the air there too.
- 1:17:18Like really the whole peninsula, you know?
- 1:17:21Smells like money. That's what's hanging in the
- 1:17:23air. It's that fragrance that Dan
- 1:17:26whipped up. Yeah, but it is you're.
- 1:17:31Right ode to currency. Rich people don't sweat.
- 1:17:40So what were some of your favourites from the Lawn guys?
- 1:17:44Oh man, I like the oddball stuff, you know, like the car
- 1:17:49that, if you want to call it that, like the, the car that
- 1:17:51ended up winning, like the whole thing was, was amazing.
- 1:17:54What was the car with the, with the with the the cow head or the
- 1:17:58the? Bull.
- 1:17:59Oh my gosh. The the horns that spanned the I
- 1:18:01think it was a Cadillac or something.
- 1:18:03It was a 48 Chrysler Town and. Country, Chrysler Town and
- 1:18:06Country. That's the and I don't even I
- 1:18:08didn't even get to take the time to investigate what that was or
- 1:18:11the story there, but I'm sure it's got a great one.
- 1:18:14There was an amazing dark green Ferrari and I don't even know,
- 1:18:18like you know what it was it. Only just made it on the lawn.
- 1:18:21Which car, really? The green Ferrari.
- 1:18:24OK, what so? I was in the paddock and they
- 1:18:27were still trying to get it started like when we parked up.
- 1:18:30Right, because the car has to. It was like 738.
- 1:18:33Oh, really? OK.
- 1:18:34Oh wow. Yeah, yeah, that was panicking
- 1:18:37about not getting on the lawn. Yeah.
- 1:18:39Gosh, Can you imagine getting that close and then not being
- 1:18:41able to get it there? Crazy.
- 1:18:44What about you guys? What cut your eye?
- 1:18:47Because I mean these cars really are the best of the best.
- 1:18:50I mean, these are the best most special cars in the world.
- 1:18:54They won't make these cars again anything like them right?
- 1:18:56The tech, the the craftsmanship, it just, it can't be recreated
- 1:19:00right? I mean, there were so many.
- 1:19:04I think there was. Did you guys see the class of
- 1:19:07Moretti's which I've never seen before?
- 1:19:08Those are neat. Tiny 2 door I mean they look
- 1:19:12like toys you know and they several of them were two-tone
- 1:19:16like little jewel. You know they look like living
- 1:19:19matchbox cars. So those were really fun.
- 1:19:23There was a 68 Serenissima GT Kia, which I've never seen
- 1:19:29anything like that. Just so many.
- 1:19:33I mean, there was a gorgeous Aston Martin DB2 coupe, and
- 1:19:40growing up in the family that I did, the Cobra class was near
- 1:19:43and dear to our hearts. Yeah.
- 1:19:45Yeah, yeah. That was really fun and the
- 1:19:48there's a cobra, it's called the Essex Wire Cobra and I think
- 1:19:53it's the winningest cobra like of all the Cobras that exist.
- 1:19:58And we got to meet the owner, but.
- 1:20:02Years ago, Tori actually found a box of memorabilia in a small
- 1:20:08antique store in Pennsylvania and bought it.
- 1:20:11And then when he got into it, it had.
- 1:20:13So the driver of this Essex wire cover was Ed Lother, and it was
- 1:20:17one of Ed Lother's racing suits and helmets, and there were log
- 1:20:21books for another car. But so he ended up reuniting the
- 1:20:24memorabilia with the different cars.
- 1:20:26So some of the stuff went to this Essex wire car.
- 1:20:29That's special. Yeah, and he'd been telling me
- 1:20:31the story and then we walked onto the lawn and I'm like,
- 1:20:33wait, I was just hearing about this.
- 1:20:35Yeah, yeah, that is, that's incredible.
- 1:20:37I'm going to the wrong antique stores, apparently.
- 1:20:39Right. I mean, that's, you know, it's
- 1:20:41like you wish rescue dogs could talk.
- 1:20:43I'm like, I wish this racing suit could talk.
- 1:20:45Like how did you end up in a tiny town in Pennsylvania
- 1:20:47without the car? That's incredible, yeah.
- 1:20:50I don't know, those are my favorites.
- 1:20:52Anything catch your eye? It was good to see Bruce Meyer
- 1:20:55with his cobra. And yes, yes, can I, can I happy
- 1:20:59there? Because I ran into Bruce a
- 1:21:00couple of times and he was so gracious.
- 1:21:02I think he remembered who I was. I mean, he's just such a, he's
- 1:21:06such a champ. What a cool guy.
- 1:21:08He just, what a great guy. So thank you, Bruce.
- 1:21:12Yeah. And.
- 1:21:13His cobra is gorgeous. Yes, Oh my God.
- 1:21:15Yes, yeah, it was a battle of the bruises, wasn't it?
- 1:21:17Because he had the first one and then Canipa had the last one,
- 1:21:21right? So they were good friends and
- 1:21:24competing against each other and Bruce won his class.
- 1:21:26So congratulations to Bruce. Yeah.
- 1:21:29It's fun to see the like the bookended production on display
- 1:21:34there. Yeah, yeah, really cool that.
- 1:21:36Was neat. Also, people watching was
- 1:21:38amazing. Like it was at the Quail, but in
- 1:21:40a different way. There's some people in costume,
- 1:21:43some people very dressed up. There's some people that, you
- 1:21:46know, are dressed to sort of align with the vehicle that
- 1:21:48they're showing, which is cool, right?
- 1:21:51I think it's safe to say that the Pebble commands a certain
- 1:21:55level of attire, right? You know, I mean, even if it's
- 1:21:58warm out, you know, us guys will suffer through with a jacket on
- 1:22:00because it's, it's right. Well, it's sort of, yeah.
- 1:22:04I think it's sort of a mark of respect.
- 1:22:06Yeah. You know that you dress up for
- 1:22:09that I think. Did you guys see the
- 1:22:12Hispanosuisa Tulip wood? Oop.
- 1:22:18Do we lose Dan? Yeah.
- 1:22:19We're going to keep talking because they don't have time to
- 1:22:20edit this. So Dan, hopefully you'll you'll
- 1:22:24rejoin us. But, well, that was the car
- 1:22:26that. Ghosted us.
- 1:22:27That was the is that enough for you car stories?
- 1:22:31Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:22:32So. Well, let's carry through.
- 1:22:32So that was the car that won it all.
- 1:22:34And I don't know what the story, but it was almost like built
- 1:22:36like a barrel. It was this wooden thing that
- 1:22:39kind of had a but in like a very handsome barrel, you know.
- 1:22:42And again, I don't. Do you know why the car was made
- 1:22:45of wood? I don't, no.
- 1:22:47And not only was it made of wood, like for people that
- 1:22:49haven't seen pictures, it was covered with brass, you know,
- 1:22:52rivets or nail heads or whatever it was.
- 1:22:55Sure. Yeah.
- 1:22:55But even the name, I mean, it was called a Tulip wood torpedo.
- 1:22:58Maybe that's why it was shaped the way it was.
- 1:23:01I'm sure there was reason for it.
- 1:23:02It was epic. It was amazing.
- 1:23:04But I, you know, I don't quite know this, this story there.
- 1:23:081924 though. I mean, that's amazing.
- 1:23:10We got to see it driving. I can't imagine it's a
- 1:23:12lightweight thing, you know, but there's got to be a reason
- 1:23:16tonight. If only we had our our guests
- 1:23:18are here and his ChatGPT friend. But I I think we're probably
- 1:23:23getting into, you know, getting to the end of this.
- 1:23:25So I mean the week kind of there he is, the week kind of ends.
- 1:23:29With. It's OK, we're glad to have you
- 1:23:32back. We just decided we're going to
- 1:23:33move forward because I don't have time to edit this one
- 1:23:35tonight, Dan. So favorite cars, you know, of
- 1:23:40course, then just the experience that Pebble is.
- 1:23:42And one of the moves at Pablo, of course, is to have access to
- 1:23:48at least one hospitality suite. I was able to visit a couple.
- 1:23:52Thank you. Infinity made some new friends
- 1:23:55at Infinity, including their director of design.
- 1:23:57So thank you for spending time with me.
- 1:24:00And then I think the ultimate flex is to eventually make your
- 1:24:03way up to the deck at the Mercedes-Benz suite and Lord
- 1:24:07over all those beneath you. And that's how my day ended.
- 1:24:12I didn't get to do that last year.
- 1:24:15That was pretty cool. Yes, they have the best food.
- 1:24:17Yes, they have the most comfortable chairs.
- 1:24:19Yes, they have the best air conditioning and yes, you see
- 1:24:22the most interesting people up there.
- 1:24:23So that was. Well, and I think one of the
- 1:24:26reasons too is like that is the center suite at the lodge.
- 1:24:29So if you are there when they announce the winner, there's
- 1:24:32nothing quite like it because I mean, people are crammed in
- 1:24:36because it's the best view because you get to see the
- 1:24:39platform and then you can walk down onto the platform where the
- 1:24:41winning car is. Yeah, so cool.
- 1:24:45That said, the lodge also shares space with Ferrari and Porsche,
- 1:24:48neither one of which extended an invitation my way.
- 1:24:51I own a Porsche, so maybe next year Porsche, you'll hook the
- 1:24:55three of us up. That said, the big bad you know
- 1:24:59lounge to be in is suite is Mercedes-Benz so.
- 1:25:04Thank you. Yeah.
- 1:25:05What about you 2? How'd you end your day?
- 1:25:09My day ended a little bit earlier because I had to head
- 1:25:11back to Southern California. So it was dawn patrol, run
- 1:25:15around the lawn and then get out of town.
- 1:25:17Unfortunately, Yeah, Yeah. And Dan, you had to drive.
- 1:25:21I had security join me for sushi at the end of the evening,
- 1:25:27because how? Was your sushi?
- 1:25:29We had sushi along the way and I was a little underwhelmed.
- 1:25:31Dude. Dude talking about the same
- 1:25:33dinner you were at. Or maybe I will have to edit
- 1:25:40this out. Sorry, I thought you were with
- 1:25:42your other crew. Got see this is what happens
- 1:25:45with. Private security, yeah.
- 1:25:48I'm tired. I'm sorry.
- 1:25:49I. Think you keep it in?
- 1:25:51Shoot. So we had $700.00, a very, very
- 1:25:54average sushi. Whoa.
- 1:25:57There was seven or eight of us, right?
- 1:25:59Yeah, that's true. That's yeah, You were there.
- 1:26:02I was there. It was the thing that happened.
- 1:26:05Well, apparently I was there, but.
- 1:26:08Allegedly. I mean, we're not even
- 1:26:11mentioning half the things that we did or places we ate or
- 1:26:14people we saw. That's and that's the that's the
- 1:26:16challenge. I mean, we'd be here for 8
- 1:26:19hours. Truly.
- 1:26:20Yeah. Like, which is an amazing
- 1:26:22problem to have. Like it's that's car week is
- 1:26:25just, there's so much. Yeah.
- 1:26:27That's why it takes like a month to process it when you get home
- 1:26:30because, you know, you wake up the next day and you just go,
- 1:26:33what did I even do? And then you do it again.
- 1:26:37I think that's a show, isn't it guys?
- 1:26:39I think it. Is do we want to just do a plug
- 1:26:42again for the free watch? Sure.
- 1:26:45Do you want to give us the rundown?
