- 0:00Welcome to the cable tv .com podcast where we
- 0:03give you the lowdown on all things television
- 0:05streaming and internet. Thanks for stopping by.
- 0:09Do you remember when streaming services were
- 0:11the hero saving us from overpriced cable? Now
- 0:14they're the villains sneaking bigger bills onto
- 0:16our bank statements. Seriously, Netflix's price
- 0:19tags keep climbing like it's chasing Everest
- 0:22and Hulu's not far behind. I get sticker shock
- 0:25every time I check my subscriptions. Today, we're
- 0:28pulling back the curtain on streaming price hikes,
- 0:30why they happen, which ones are sensible, which
- 0:33are just cash grabs, and whether your favorite
- 0:35service is still worth it. We'll spotlight Netflix's
- 0:37wild ride, Disney's turbo increases, Hulu's slow
- 0:41changes, and Apple TV's oddball tactics. Plus,
- 0:45bundle hacks, ad add -ons, and Crunchyroll's
- 0:49switch from free to paid. Ready to decode the
- 0:52madness? Back in the day, Netflix at $7 .99 felt
- 0:56like the deal of the century. Unlimited binging,
- 0:59no ads, almost too good to be true. Honestly,
- 1:02price hikes barely crossed my mind then. Netflix
- 1:05was rock solid for years. So predictable, it
- 1:08was boring in the best possible way. Now, yearly
- 1:11increases are so routine, I brace myself whenever
- 1:14I get an email from them. It's wild how what
- 1:16was once a playground is now a maze, with every
- 1:20service, changing plans, adding tiers, or restricting
- 1:24sharing. Speaking of sharing, Netflix's password
- 1:27crackdown really marks the moment streaming turned
- 1:29into a tightly controlled and expensive business.
- 1:31When Netflix started, it was basically a free
- 1:33add -on if you were getting DVDs. Now, the standard
- 1:37plan is nearly $20, premium almost $27. That
- 1:41escalated fast. What's wild is how the first
- 1:43price hikes were sneaky just a few bucks every
- 1:45couple years. Suddenly, doubling the price is
- 1:48normal, and ad -free is now a luxury. Plus, they
- 1:52killed the basic plan. Two streams max, and if
- 1:55your family's bigger, you pay more for each member.
- 1:57It's almost ironic what started as unlimited
- 1:59TV for all now feels like a premium club with
- 2:02hidden fees. Makes you question if Netflix still
- 2:05delivers on its original promise. That's the
- 2:07big question. Is sticking with Netflix still
- 2:10worth it? or are we just paying out of habit?
- 2:12Disney Plus took the opposite approach. It launched
- 2:15in 2019, but doubled its price within four years.
- 2:19No slow climb, just pedal to the metal. And don't
- 2:22forget, ads arrived in 2022. Now you pay more
- 2:26to remove them, plus they slash tons of content.
- 2:29Feels like they're scrambling to recoup costs.
- 2:31Unless you're a diehard Star Wars fan, Disney
- 2:33Plus alone is pretty pricey for what you get.
- 2:36Their bundle with Hulu is the workaround, especially
- 2:38since Hulu will only exist through Disney Plus
- 2:41soon. Talk about a twist! Hulu was famous for
- 2:45stability, no price changes, just two clear options.
- 2:49But since Disney took over, premium prices have
- 2:51been quietly creeping up. Feels like Disney's
- 2:54nudging people to ditch Hulu standalone and jump
- 2:57to their bundle. The slow trickle of increases
- 3:00is classic behavioral nudging. And now, Hulu's
- 3:04merging with Disney Plus. The standalone app
- 3:07won't survive past 2026, but Hulu as a service
- 3:10lives on inside Disney+. Most people will probably
- 3:14just go with the bundle, even if it costs more.
- 3:16That's the whole strategy. Make the bundle too
- 3:19convenient to resist. The Disney bundle is a
- 3:22circus duo, trio, legacy, all sorts of combos.
- 3:26If you're okay with ads, it's a decent deal compared
- 3:29to subscribing separately. But premium is steep.
- 3:33Paying $30 a month for Hulu Disney Plus and ESPN
- 3:37ad -free makes Netflix's premium look tame. The
- 3:40gap between basic and premium is almost punitive.
- 3:44Once Hulu content is fully baked into Disney
- 3:47Plus, expect even bigger changes by late 2026.
- 3:51Disney's betting everything on bundles. Makes
- 3:54me wonder if bundles will get so confusing most
- 3:56people just pick the cheapest option even if
- 3:58it means watching with ads. HBO Max is drama
- 4:01incarnate. It launched expensive, never competed
- 4:04on price, then rebranded to Max, lost its HBO
- 4:07identity, then switched back. That rebrand was
- 4:10a mess. Dropping HBO was supposed to attract
- 4:13families, but they stripped out Cartoon Network
- 4:16and alienated kids. Then they started selling
- 4:19major titles to Netflix and Hulu confusion everywhere.
- 4:22Meanwhile, prices kept rising. Premium is now
- 4:26nearly $23 for four streams, almost as high as
- 4:30Netflix, but with less family content. Shows
- 4:33how important branding is. If you lose your core
- 4:35audience, even prestige TV can feel overpriced.
- 4:39Amazon Prime Video used to be simple, one price,
- 4:42ad -free, bundled with Prime. But in 2024, they
- 4:45slapped ads on everything and started charging
- 4:48to remove them. Classic bait and switch. hook
- 4:51everyone on ad -free, then yank it away and hide
- 4:54it behind a paywall. Plus, as Prime itself gets
- 4:57pricier, streaming feels like an afterthought.
- 5:00Apple TV is the oddball. One plan, no ads, six
- 5:04streams, and just three price increases refreshingly
- 5:08simple compared to the madness elsewhere. But
- 5:10I'm almost afraid to praise them. Every time
- 5:12a service gets called consumer -friendly, they
- 5:15turn around and add a new fee. Their mostly original
- 5:18content helps keep costs down. No expensive licensing
- 5:21means fewer excuses for price hikes, or at least
- 5:24that's the hope. Still, Apple's rebrand from
- 5:27Apple TV Plus to Apple TV proves nothing is sacred.
- 5:31Simplicity can disappear overnight. Paramount
- 5:33Plus is a rare bird. It actually dropped prices
- 5:36for its Showtime bundle when rebranding to premium,
- 5:39the opposite of everyone else. Showtime is basically
- 5:43gone, folded in to Paramount Plus. Now you get
- 5:46both for less than the old bundle. It's almost
- 5:50shockingly reasonable. Though the constant renaming
- 5:53is confusing. Premium isn't what it was in 2022,
- 5:57and Shawtime is just a memory. Makes me wonder
- 5:59if Paramount will stick to this path or ramp
- 6:01prices up again once people get used to the deal.
- 6:03Peacock's naming scheme is bananas. Select is
- 6:06the cheapest but has ads and restricted content.
- 6:09Only Premium Plus is ad -free, which isn't how
- 6:12most services define premium. Losing the free
- 6:14tier in 2023 was a real blow. Now, even Select
- 6:19misses out on originals, sports, and movies.
- 6:23Peacock's biggest straws. If you're nostalgic
- 6:25for classic sitcoms, Select is fine, but anyone
- 6:28wanting new releases has to pay up. It's a nudge
- 6:31toward higher tiers. Honestly, the confusion
- 6:33probably helps them. If you can't tell the difference,
- 6:37you might just grab the most expensive option
- 6:39and call it a day. ESPN's rebrand from ESPN Plus
- 6:42to ESPN Select and Unlimited is a double -edged
- 6:44sword. Unlimited at $29 .99 includes all cable
- 6:48channels, but only with ads. For superfans, it's
- 6:52tempting, but if you want everything live or
- 6:54follow multiple sports, costs rack up fast. With
- 6:58standalone streaming, diehards pay more than
- 7:01ever. The shift made watching sports just as
- 7:03expensive as cable may be even worse. Casual
- 7:06fans get plenty with Select, but the real action
- 7:10and real costs are locked behind unlimited. Crunchyroll's
- 7:13transformation is wild. Now, every tier costs
- 7:16money. No more free streaming as of 2026. It's
- 7:20bittersweet. The lowest plan is $9 .99, but none
- 7:25of the tiers have ads and you get a solid anime
- 7:28experience. Their subscriber count is booming,
- 7:31but nostalgia for the free days lingers. Sometimes
- 7:34I miss just hopping on for free, but the paid
- 7:36tiers feel like a fair trade for quality and
- 7:39no ads. Still, that shift shows how even the
- 7:42most generous platforms can change their tune
- 7:44as streaming evolved. So, three big takeaways.
- 7:47Price hikes are inevitable. Bundles can sometimes
- 7:50soften the blow, and branding changes often signal
- 7:53even bigger shifts coming. The action step? Review
- 7:56your subscriptions. Look for overlap, wasted
- 7:59tiers, and check if a bundle actually saves you
- 8:01money. Don't just accept every increase. Streaming
- 8:04isn't getting any cheaper, but making smart choices
- 8:07can help keep your bills under control. Thanks
- 8:09for tuning in. Next episode, we'll dig into student
- 8:13discounts and annual billing secrets. Until then,
- 8:16happy streaming and keep those price alerts set.
