- 1:29Speaker 2: Here's what you may have missed with the Kraken coming
- 1:32Speaker 2: out of the holiday break and in period one with
- 1:35Speaker 2: a scoreless tie and a red hot captain looking to
- 1:39Speaker 2: ignite the offense.
- 1:40Speaker 3: Back into the offensive zone four Seattle.
- 1:42Speaker 4: But here behind the.
- 1:43Speaker 3: Goal bark corner in front, Every suits got.
- 1:54Speaker 5: Jordan Every goals at three straight games. As couple Cucko
- 1:59Speaker 5: feeds it from the right corner, it's a one nothing,
- 2:02Speaker 5: cracking lead sixteen twelve to play in a second, but
- 2:05Speaker 5: Como Conco.
- 2:06Speaker 6: Gets the pucked down low on the right side after
- 2:08Speaker 6: Maddy Beneers takes it into the offensive zone and Como
- 2:11Speaker 6: Coco finds Everyy on that back door. Every wastes no
- 2:14Speaker 6: time putting this one pass. Blodar Tom shelf.
- 2:17Speaker 3: The Captain's on.
- 2:18Speaker 4: The board one nothing crackodur out.
- 2:21Speaker 6: To play it front.
- 2:22Speaker 5: Stevenson stoo. Ellie Taubanan from behind the cage points in
- 2:34Speaker 5: sixth straight chandler. Stevenson on the finish points in ten
- 2:38Speaker 5: of us last eleven.
- 2:40Speaker 3: It's a two nothing saddlead Boma's a good zone clear
- 2:44Speaker 3: from the cracking d of the ice at Ellie Tolvdan
- 2:46Speaker 3: beats sen. I'm the puck behind the net, just wins
- 2:48Speaker 3: it straight up, finds Stevenson floating down in the middle
- 2:52Speaker 3: of the ice and puts it right on it with blade.
- 2:54Speaker 3: Stevenson makes no mistake bottom corner on Blodar.
- 2:58Speaker 6: Two nothing, stieve it said, racing after it hell pocket free,
- 3:02Speaker 6: steven said.
- 3:03Speaker 5: Down the ice flow the goaline looked in front, so.
- 3:08Speaker 6: It goes damn it.
- 3:09Speaker 3: R back to the bench.
- 3:10Speaker 6: Extra attacker coming back on l A Tolvenan.
- 3:13Speaker 7: Stale shots Ellie Golvin in his second of the night.
- 3:25Speaker 5: End up cracking back up by.
- 3:27Speaker 6: A field goal for one. Ellie tolven doing some great
- 3:31Speaker 6: work because he hunted down that buck, picked it off
- 3:34Speaker 6: and it got deflected towards the flyer's nets. He had
- 3:37Speaker 6: nothing but space to go after that and get his
- 3:40Speaker 6: seventh off the season.
- 3:42Speaker 2: Well, that's certainly a way to close it out. The
- 3:44Speaker 2: crack end getting a one nothing lead after one period
- 3:46Speaker 2: of play every fits you. Al Kiniski had the soundtrack
- 3:50Speaker 2: for a three goal third period, with Chandler Stevenson helping
- 3:54Speaker 2: Ellie Tolbnan extend this point streak to six consecutive games,
- 3:58Speaker 2: and Tolbnen himself it up with a pair of empty
- 4:01Speaker 2: ned goals to support a terrific effort once again by
- 4:05Speaker 2: Philip Grubauer, who had thirty one saves, was First Star
- 4:09Speaker 2: and was one fifty seven away from a shutout that
- 4:12Speaker 2: was broken up by Carl Grunstrom late in the third period.
- 4:16Speaker 2: But the Kraken getting Jared McCann and Vince Dunn back
- 4:19Speaker 2: into the lineup promising signs here for a team that
- 4:21Speaker 2: has won now four games in a row and went
- 4:24Speaker 2: to bed one point back the cut line of the
- 4:26Speaker 2: Western Conference after a four to one victory over Philadelphia.
- 4:31Speaker 2: One of those players who's back is forward Jared McCann,
- 4:34Speaker 2: and here he is last night meeting with the media.
- 4:37Speaker 8: Yeah, I was good. I thought we had some good chances. Obviously,
- 4:39Speaker 8: Cats made some good places tonight. You can see the
- 4:41Speaker 8: offense coming for him. You know, me and writer are
- 4:45Speaker 8: still trying to work with each other and you know,
- 4:48Speaker 8: create good offense.
- 4:49Speaker 9: There is there any sort of a dusting period period,
- 4:50Speaker 9: Look like you just came out fireing right away.
- 4:52Speaker 8: Uh yeah, beg skates will do that for you, right.
- 4:54Speaker 8: You know, it's a lot easier playing hockey than in
- 4:56Speaker 8: his bag skating. So you know, I just felt I
- 4:58Speaker 8: was excited to come out and just to try to
- 5:00Speaker 8: be a positive, positive ashbe for my team.
- 5:04Speaker 4: Love scoring first.
- 5:06Speaker 9: I guess a couple of periods and things changed a
- 5:07Speaker 9: little bit there in the end. But would you make
- 5:09Speaker 9: a kind of flow up this game? It just outline
- 5:11Speaker 9: in general.
- 5:11Speaker 8: I mean, groovy groovy was awesome for us to make
- 5:13Speaker 8: huge days. Our PK was great tonight. We didn't give
- 5:16Speaker 8: them too too much, but when we did, obviously Grooby's
- 5:19Speaker 8: there to back us up, so you know, coud just
- 5:21Speaker 8: to him and obviously we uh we need to uh
- 5:25Speaker 8: come up with the same after for you.
- 5:26Speaker 9: I mean, it's been obviously a weird season so far,
- 5:29Speaker 9: very limited action and I guess how are you feeling
- 5:33Speaker 9: right now? Do you feel like you're getting into a
- 5:35Speaker 9: rhythm with this game.
- 5:37Speaker 8: So yeah, yeah, it's kind of tough. Obviously, this is
- 5:38Speaker 8: the first time in my career I've kind of gone
- 5:40Speaker 8: through something like this. You know, mentally it's been tough,
- 5:43Speaker 8: but you know, I got great, great teammates here who
- 5:45Speaker 8: have been you know, supportive with me, and you know,
- 5:48Speaker 8: I'm just trying to make it through a game at
- 5:49Speaker 8: this point. So you know, I'm I'm looking forward to
- 5:53Speaker 8: the future here. You're just getting back into sort of
- 5:56Speaker 8: things yourself, but for you know, the team that's been
- 5:58Speaker 8: a long time to you have won a game in
- 6:00Speaker 8: this building.
- 6:00Speaker 6: To get that right out of.
- 6:01Speaker 4: A holiday break, and what do you feel like that
- 6:03Speaker 4: will do to the group to set things up?
- 6:04Speaker 8: Yeah, momentum. You know, we gotta we gotta use that
- 6:07Speaker 8: going in tomorrow. Obviously, you know, we're gonna worry about
- 6:10Speaker 8: us and what we can control, and that's our effort.
- 6:12Speaker 9: Tom He's giving a little more confidence in the back
- 6:15Speaker 9: to back considering how things had gone in that situation previously,
- 6:18Speaker 9: coming off of another back to back, so we.
- 6:20Speaker 8: Recently Yeah, yeah, it's uh, you know, the guys did
- 6:23Speaker 8: a great job in California. Obviously that's where it where
- 6:26Speaker 8: it started, and we were able to kind of get
- 6:27Speaker 8: one there in the back to back. We have I
- 6:30Speaker 8: think three more chances coming up here in the next
- 6:32Speaker 8: couple of days, so you know, we're we're excited, and uh,
- 6:36Speaker 8: we're just gonna keep pushing forward.
- 6:37Speaker 2: McCann did not score in last night's game, playing on
- 6:40Speaker 2: the right wing with Shane Wright as a centerman and
- 6:43Speaker 2: Bertlee Catton, but you can certainly tell a couple of
- 6:46Speaker 2: scoring chances he had. It could be a matter of
- 6:48Speaker 2: time before he pops another one. With five goals in
- 6:51Speaker 2: his first eleven games before coming back from a lower
- 6:55Speaker 2: body injury, his former team, of course, that drafted him.
- 6:58Speaker 2: The Vancouver Canucks will here into Climate Pledge Arena for
- 7:02Speaker 2: their first matchup of the season and facing plenty of
- 7:05Speaker 2: question marks after trading their captain Quinn Hughes to Minnesota
- 7:10Speaker 2: and what ultimately was arguably one of the bigger blockbuster
- 7:13Speaker 2: trades the NHL has seen in years, the Canucks getting
- 7:18Speaker 2: defenseman Ze Buuyam, forwards Marco Rossi and Liam Ogrin, and
- 7:22Speaker 2: a first round draft pick in this next year's NHL
- 7:25Speaker 2: Entry Draft in exchange for Buoyam and a trade that
- 7:28Speaker 2: went down sixteen days ago. A lot can happen in January,
- 7:33Speaker 2: but it still feels like right now, two teams going
- 7:36Speaker 2: in opposite directions are squaring off for this evening, with
- 7:39Speaker 2: the Kraken winning four in a row one point back
- 7:41Speaker 2: at the cut line in the West of sixteen fourteen
- 7:44Speaker 2: and six and the Canucks right now in the basement
- 7:47Speaker 2: of the Western Conference after losing back to back games,
- 7:50Speaker 2: their record at fifteen nineteen and three with thirty three points. Still,
- 7:56Speaker 2: you get these two teams on the ice, anything can happen.
- 8:00Speaker 2: Time to fire up. Talk on the IE five will
- 8:02Speaker 2: read to quote our friend ever it fits you, kracking
- 8:05Speaker 2: Canucks this evening a climate pledge arena our good friend
- 8:08Speaker 2: from the visitors. Brendan Bachelor joining us right now, Radio
- 8:12Speaker 2: voice of the Canucks on sports Net six fifty. Brendan,
- 8:15Speaker 2: thank you very much here for joining us. First off,
- 8:17Speaker 2: I have to ask you the holidays. The break wasn't
- 8:21Speaker 2: too long, but was it long enough for you? Had
- 8:23Speaker 2: you enjoy it?
- 8:24Speaker 4: Sir? It's always too short when you get to spend
- 8:27Speaker 4: time with family and you know, get away from the
- 8:30Speaker 4: rink for a few days, especially with how compressed the
- 8:33Speaker 4: schedule has been this season. But glad to be back
- 8:36Speaker 4: and talking about hockey again as we get set to
- 8:39Speaker 4: enter the new year here in a few days.
- 8:40Speaker 2: Yeah, good to have you. And certainly I echo those
- 8:43Speaker 2: same sentiments as far as the break being short enough,
- 8:45Speaker 2: and that's the world here that we live in with
- 8:47Speaker 2: the Olympic break, cramming a lot here into the schedule
- 8:50Speaker 2: for December and January, back to back for the crack
- 8:52Speaker 2: inside ending today, back to back for the Canucks ending tomorrow.
- 8:56Speaker 2: I just first want to go back and kind of
- 8:58Speaker 2: examine where matt were back in October compared to now,
- 9:03Speaker 2: and a little bit certainly has changed on the Canucks
- 9:05Speaker 2: side as far as their roster when you look at
- 9:07Speaker 2: it here from the scope pre Quinn Hughes trade, post
- 9:11Speaker 2: Quinn Hughes trade, What does the outlook of the Canucks
- 9:15Speaker 2: right now than say, versus two months ago.
- 9:17Speaker 4: Well, they are now a rebuilding team, which is not
- 9:20Speaker 4: what they planned to be coming into the season. All
- 9:22Speaker 4: the talking Vancouver was about trying to get back to
- 9:26Speaker 4: being competitive and surround Quinn Hughes with the kind of
- 9:30Speaker 4: players that could help this team win so that they
- 9:32Speaker 4: could prove to him that you know it was worth
- 9:34Speaker 4: it to stay in Vancouver and sign a contract extension. Ultimately,
- 9:39Speaker 4: things went completely sideway for this team in the first
- 9:44Speaker 4: portion of the season. They had a ton of injuries,
- 9:46Speaker 4: especially down the middle of the ice. Philip Heatl, who
- 9:50Speaker 4: had been penciled in as their second line center, was
- 9:52Speaker 4: hurt in the first couple weeks of the season and
- 9:55Speaker 4: hasn't yet returned. Teddy Blueger, who was going to be
- 9:58Speaker 4: their third line center, has only played two games thus
- 10:02Speaker 4: far this year, and Elias Petterson has been banged up
- 10:05Speaker 4: and in and out of the lineup at different points too.
- 10:07Speaker 4: So that essentially decimated their center ice position to the
- 10:11Speaker 4: point where they had a number of guys who you
- 10:13Speaker 4: would project to be in the AHL having to play
- 10:17Speaker 4: down the middle in the NHL, and in some situations
- 10:19Speaker 4: as second and third line centers, playing relatively big minutes
- 10:23Speaker 4: and in matchup roles, and so you know, obviously that
- 10:27Speaker 4: limited this team's ability to have success. And you know,
- 10:31Speaker 4: unfortunately for the Canucks when they've struggled on the ice,
- 10:34Speaker 4: it led to dysfunction off the ice over the past
- 10:37Speaker 4: couple of years. You look at the JT. Miller trade
- 10:39Speaker 4: last year and the publicized rip between him and Elias Petterson, Well,
- 10:44Speaker 4: it became clear that Quin Hughes was really unhappy with
- 10:46Speaker 4: how the season was playing out, and ultimately that led
- 10:49Speaker 4: to the trade, which happened earlier in December and kind
- 10:53Speaker 4: of breathed some new life into the team to a
- 10:56Speaker 4: certain extent, because you get three pieces that come in
- 11:00Speaker 4: and help out, most notably Marco Rossi at center ice.
- 11:03Speaker 4: So it solidified some of those issues that they had
- 11:05Speaker 4: been having due to the injuries, and they rattled off
- 11:08Speaker 4: four straight wins with the new editions that they brought
- 11:11Speaker 4: into the lineup, but they lost the final game before
- 11:14Speaker 4: the holiday break. They lost the first game coming out
- 11:18Speaker 4: of the holiday break, and it's going to be a
- 11:19Speaker 4: struggle for them in the second half. It's an organization
- 11:21Speaker 4: that is said, now that we've moved on from Queen Hughes,
- 11:24Speaker 4: we're leaning into, you know, at least partially rebuilding. What
- 11:29Speaker 4: exactly that means is hotly debated in Vancouver, but they
- 11:33Speaker 4: find themselves right now thirty second in the NHL standings,
- 11:37Speaker 4: and more of the talking Vancouver is around whether they
- 11:40Speaker 4: could draft right at the top of the draft in
- 11:42Speaker 4: the summer than it is about contending for a playoff
- 11:44Speaker 4: spot or winning games or anything like that.
- 11:46Speaker 2: Yeah, before I get onto the big return here as
- 11:49Speaker 2: far as this trade, and I think that zee boo yam,
- 11:51Speaker 2: I want to get into the whole understanding of the
- 11:54Speaker 2: context of retool and rebuild, especially here for you know,
- 11:58Speaker 2: fans who were still kind of learning more and more
- 12:01Speaker 2: about how this works and the projected timeline that usually
- 12:05Speaker 2: is attached to it. So when you dive into the
- 12:09Speaker 2: definition of those two words, and maybe the understanding that
- 12:13Speaker 2: the Caducks may or may not want to build around,
- 12:16Speaker 2: say a core of Elias Peterson and Brockbster, how different
- 12:20Speaker 2: could this roster be looking Brendan you think roughly in
- 12:23Speaker 2: about two to three years from now.
- 12:25Speaker 4: Well, that is a fascinating question, and it's one that's
- 12:29Speaker 4: kind of hard to take down at the moment because
- 12:32Speaker 4: the organization is entering what they are calling a hybrid build,
- 12:38Speaker 4: which is a new term that I don't think I
- 12:40Speaker 4: had ever heard before. But what they're essentially saying is, look,
- 12:44Speaker 4: we realize that we're not going to be good this year.
- 12:47Speaker 4: We want to look towards the future, and we're going
- 12:50Speaker 4: to make some moves to do that, but we're not
- 12:53Speaker 4: going to burn the whole thing down and build it
- 12:56Speaker 4: back up again, and many fans in Vancouver want to
- 12:59Speaker 4: see them do just that, want them to bottom out,
- 13:02Speaker 4: want them to trade veterans like Brockfessor and Elias Peterson
- 13:06Speaker 4: and Connor Garland and Pter Demco so that they can
- 13:10Speaker 4: acquire as many draft picks as possible, draft as high
- 13:13Speaker 4: in the draft as they possibly can, and build a
- 13:16Speaker 4: new era of Cannocks hockey through sort of an aggressive
- 13:21Speaker 4: rebuild as you would call it, where you know, you
- 13:24Speaker 4: move out all the pieces that might help you win
- 13:26Speaker 4: now and the veteran pieces that may not be here
- 13:29Speaker 4: when you want to turn it around and be successful.
- 13:32Speaker 4: So that's, you know, what I would look at in
- 13:34Speaker 4: terms of what Vancouver fans are talking about in terms
- 13:38Speaker 4: of a rebuild, A retool or a hybrid build is
- 13:42Speaker 4: similar to that, but I think on a faster timeline,
- 13:45Speaker 4: where the organization understands it's not going to be good
- 13:47Speaker 4: this year, they're going to trade some of their pending
- 13:50Speaker 4: on restricted free agents. We expect to see the likes
- 13:52Speaker 4: of Keeper Sherwood and a vander Kaine dealt between now
- 13:55Speaker 4: and the trade deadline, But I don't know if they're
- 13:58Speaker 4: going to move off of the likes of Rock Besser
- 14:00Speaker 4: or LEAs Petterson, just as a couple of examples, because
- 14:04Speaker 4: I think they are hoping that by bottoming out this year,
- 14:10Speaker 4: they can get a generational player at the top of
- 14:12Speaker 4: the draft and that can sort of jump start getting
- 14:15Speaker 4: them back into contention faster than might have happened otherwise.
- 14:20Speaker 4: But you know, you talk about a rebuild within the
- 14:23Speaker 4: context of the National Hockey League. I think the San
- 14:26Speaker 4: Jose Sharks are a great example within the Pacific Division
- 14:29Speaker 4: to look at because they are trending back in the
- 14:33Speaker 4: right direction now, but it took them six seasons of
- 14:37Speaker 4: missing the playoffs. And you know, really, I think, what
- 14:41Speaker 4: was it, three of those six seasons they finished last
- 14:44Speaker 4: in the Pacific Division and drafted very high in the draft,
- 14:47Speaker 4: And now you look at the group of young talent
- 14:50Speaker 4: that they've amassed, Maclin, Celebrini, will Smith, William Ecklin. Just
- 14:55Speaker 4: as a few examples. Sam Dickinson's a really good defenseman
- 14:59Speaker 4: in San Jose. That's the kind of thing that when
- 15:01Speaker 4: you fully aggressively go into a rebuild, you probably have
- 15:05Speaker 4: to be willing to entertain at least a half decade
- 15:10Speaker 4: of not being incredibly competitive, and although many Canucks fans
- 15:15Speaker 4: seem to want that, seemed to say, you know, yes,
- 15:17Speaker 4: we'll take the short term pain over the long term
- 15:20Speaker 4: gain of potentially building another Stanley Cup contender. It doesn't
- 15:24Speaker 4: seem like the organization is willing to spend five plus
- 15:28Speaker 4: years down at the bottom of the standings. And that's
- 15:30Speaker 4: where some of the disagreement and debate in Vancouver is
- 15:34Speaker 4: sort of centered. Is they want to turn it around
- 15:38Speaker 4: more like a two or three year timeline, and I
- 15:41Speaker 4: think many people are skeptical as to whether they're going
- 15:43Speaker 4: to be able to do that.
- 15:44Speaker 2: Brendan batchelorre joining us right now on Crack and this morning,
- 15:47Speaker 2: ahead of the crack and the Canucks here for this evening.
- 15:50Speaker 2: I want to get to zee Buuyam now. And this trade,
- 15:53Speaker 2: Brendan I said earlier, it kind of reminded me of
- 15:55Speaker 2: the Tamusaloni trade at Anaheim back in nineteen ninety six.
- 15:59Speaker 2: It was that mass in the return that the Canucks
- 16:01Speaker 2: are also getting here as far as the roster parts
- 16:05Speaker 2: off of Minnesota was also significant. But I mean, Booyam
- 16:09Speaker 2: seems to be at the very top as far as
- 16:12Speaker 2: the headline piece of this return here and a defenseman
- 16:15Speaker 2: that I loved back in the twenty twenty four NHL
- 16:18Speaker 2: entry Draft and no surprise why Minnesota took him at
- 16:21Speaker 2: twelfth overall and he's immediately producing into the NHL. What
- 16:25Speaker 2: are the initial returns here on Billiam as a Canucks defenseman.
- 16:29Speaker 4: Yeah, I think you know, he's been he's been good
- 16:32Speaker 4: early on, and people are excited about getting such a
- 16:35Speaker 4: key young piece in return for Queen Hughes. Let's be honest,
- 16:39Speaker 4: if you were going to trade Queen Hughes, you had
- 16:41Speaker 4: to get a king's ransom. And I think, you know,
- 16:44Speaker 4: more of the criticism in Vancouver has been about the
- 16:47Speaker 4: fact that you had to trade Queen Hughes at all
- 16:50Speaker 4: than it has been about the return. I think it's
- 16:52Speaker 4: pretty universally agreed that this was a good return for
- 16:55Speaker 4: the Canucks to get to trade Queen Hughes away. And
- 16:58Speaker 4: see Billiam's a big part of that. A twenty year
- 17:00Speaker 4: old defenseman. He joins a young defensive group in Vancouver
- 17:05Speaker 4: now that has Tom Bilander who's also twenty, Elias Petterson
- 17:08Speaker 4: who's twenty one, and you can sort of see them
- 17:11Speaker 4: building the blue line of the future with these three
- 17:14Speaker 4: young guys, and I think unfortunately for Buoyam, he's probably
- 17:18Speaker 4: going to be unfairly compared to Hughes because of the
- 17:22Speaker 4: fact that, you know, he was part of the return
- 17:25Speaker 4: in the trade. I don't know if he's going to
- 17:27Speaker 4: be Quinn Hughes at the end of the day, but
- 17:29Speaker 4: he certainly has the potential to be a number one
- 17:31Speaker 4: defenseman for the Canucks, and as an organization that hasn't
- 17:35Speaker 4: really had a lot of elite level defenseman prior to
- 17:40Speaker 4: drafting Quinn Hughes, it was really important that they got
- 17:43Speaker 4: that back. And you know, just talking to Bouim a
- 17:45Speaker 4: little bit, he seems like a supremely confident kid at
- 17:49Speaker 4: the age of twenty. He comes in as a winner already.
- 17:53Speaker 4: He's won the World Juniors twice with the United States.
- 17:56Speaker 4: He won the NCAA National Championship at Denver two, so
- 18:00Speaker 4: you know, he he's a player with pedigree, a player
- 18:03Speaker 4: who knows how to win, and someone that can help
- 18:07Speaker 4: sort of solidify their blue line now that they've lost
- 18:10Speaker 4: Queen Hughes. So early returns have been good. There's a
- 18:13Speaker 4: lot of excitement around him, and I think he stayed
- 18:15Speaker 4: in pretty well to start the.
- 18:17Speaker 2: Crack and won't see Jake debrask here for this s evening.
- 18:19Speaker 2: Adam Foot already announcing that he'll be a healthy scratch,
- 18:22Speaker 2: So a big piece of their offense potentially out of
- 18:24Speaker 2: the lineup here, but one that will be there, will
- 18:27Speaker 2: be Key for Surewood. And you mentioned his name, a
- 18:29Speaker 2: potential free agent coming up here and a player that
- 18:32Speaker 2: will see how long if he's going to be around
- 18:34Speaker 2: long term or not. But diving into his game at
- 18:37Speaker 2: thirty years of age, Brendan previously career high for him
- 18:41Speaker 2: was ten goals for one season ever since then nineteen
- 18:44Speaker 2: last year with the Canucks, and this year sixteen goals
- 18:47Speaker 2: in thirty seven games already sixteen goals, four assists, twenty points.
- 18:53Speaker 2: Those are cy young numbers if I ever saw them.
- 18:55Speaker 2: But what's the biggest difference here you think in key
- 18:57Speaker 2: for Surewood's game now than say, versus two years ago.
- 19:01Speaker 4: Yeah, it's a really interesting question because I liked a
- 19:04Speaker 4: lot of his game a couple of years ago before
- 19:07Speaker 4: the Canucks signed him, because they played the Nashville Predators
- 19:10Speaker 4: in the first round of the playoffs that year and
- 19:12Speaker 4: Sherwood was a member of the Predators and was noticeable
- 19:16Speaker 4: in a fourth line role in that series, to the
- 19:18Speaker 4: point that when the Canucks had the opportunity to sign him,
- 19:22Speaker 4: Quinn Hughes himself said, yeah, sign that guy. I couldn't
- 19:24Speaker 4: stand playing against him. I'd rather have him on my side.
- 19:28Speaker 4: And you know, Sherwood has continued to grow his game
- 19:32Speaker 4: and flourish with opportunity since arriving with the Canucks. He's
- 19:35Speaker 4: a relentless four checker, a tremendously physical player. He led
- 19:40Speaker 4: the NHL in hits last year and broke a record
- 19:42Speaker 4: since hits were recorded for the number of hits in
- 19:46Speaker 4: a season last year. So he plays a very hard
- 19:49Speaker 4: brand of hockey. It's you know, takes a toll on
- 19:51Speaker 4: the body. But yet he played seventy eight games last season,
- 19:55Speaker 4: so it's you know, pretty impressive that he can play
- 19:59Speaker 4: that way night in and night out, but not go
- 20:03Speaker 4: down to injury or not be affected by it very much,
- 20:06Speaker 4: it seems. And you know, he's picked up right where
- 20:09Speaker 4: he's left off this year. He's second in the league
- 20:11Speaker 4: and hits right now, leads the Canucks in goals, has
- 20:13Speaker 4: played every game thus far this year. And you know,
- 20:17Speaker 4: you mentioned what I was talking about earlier. With him
- 20:20Speaker 4: likely being traded before the deadline, it sounds like the
- 20:24Speaker 4: value that he may have on the open market is
- 20:26Speaker 4: pretty high based on the intangibles he brings, to the
- 20:29Speaker 4: secondary scoring ability that he has to you know, he
- 20:31Speaker 4: would be a perfect third or fourth line player on
- 20:34Speaker 4: a Stanley Cup contender right now with the Canucks and
- 20:37Speaker 4: where they are, he's a top six forward who skated
- 20:41Speaker 4: on the first line in their last game the other
- 20:43Speaker 4: night against the San Jose Sharks. So you know, with
- 20:47Speaker 4: opportunity and with an organization that has trusted him, and
- 20:50Speaker 4: coaching staffs that have trusted him, first with Rick Tockett
- 20:54Speaker 4: and now with Adam Foot, he's really grown his game.
- 20:57Speaker 4: And you know, he's got a heck of a shot too,
- 21:00Speaker 4: which I think takes goaltenders off guard a lot of
- 21:04Speaker 4: the times. He can score from the top of the
- 21:06Speaker 4: circle with his wrist shot off the rush, and has
- 21:08Speaker 4: done so with you know, relative ease or regularity, maybe
- 21:13Speaker 4: I should say. And you look at the last two years.
- 21:15Speaker 4: He was thirteen percent shooting last year for nineteen goals.
- 21:18Speaker 4: He's nearly nineteen percent shooting this year for sixteen goals
- 21:22Speaker 4: in thirty seven games, so I do expect him to
- 21:25Speaker 4: be traded before the deadlineer whoever gets him will add
- 21:28Speaker 4: a pretty important piece to a potential playoff run.
- 21:31Speaker 2: All right, looking forward to this one here, first of
- 21:33Speaker 2: four matchups coming up, and these two teams will see
- 21:35Speaker 2: each other again coming up on Friday in Vancouver. My friend,
- 21:40Speaker 2: great talking with you, have a great call in the meantime. Man,
- 21:43Speaker 2: Happy New Year to you and.
- 21:45Speaker 4: To you and all your listeners as well. Thanks for
- 21:47Speaker 4: having me, all.
- 21:48Speaker 2: Right, thank you, my friend, Brendan Bachelor joining us again
- 21:51Speaker 2: radio voice of the Vancouver Canucks on Sports Nets six fifty.
- 21:55Speaker 2: It's not exactly a home and home series, but they
- 21:57Speaker 2: will see a lot of each other here for the
- 22:00Speaker 2: week one matchup in Seattle tonight and then the next
- 22:04Speaker 2: matchup in Vancouver coming up on Friday, and that will
- 22:07Speaker 2: end a back to back again for the Kraken after
- 22:10Speaker 2: facing Nashville at home on New Year's Day. In the
- 22:13Speaker 2: overall scope of the series has been a pretty sharp
- 22:16Speaker 2: you turn ever since the beginning. The Kraken lost their
- 22:19Speaker 2: first five matchups with Vancouver in regulation, but they have
- 22:22Speaker 2: taken control of this series ever since, taking at least
- 22:25Speaker 2: a point or a win in nine of the last
- 22:28Speaker 2: previous ten meetings the Kraken averaging four and a half
- 22:31Speaker 2: goals a game over the last ten meetings. They've had
- 22:34Speaker 2: seven wins in that span. The Canucks with two shootout
- 22:37Speaker 2: wins out of three total in that last stretch two
- 22:41Speaker 2: point eight goals per game. Elias Peterson shares a Canucks
- 22:44Speaker 2: scoring lead right now with twenty two points, but don't
- 22:47Speaker 2: be full by just him at the top, of course,
- 22:49Speaker 2: Philip Peronic has got a massive rocket of a shot
- 22:52Speaker 2: twenty two points, also tied here for the scoring lead
- 22:54Speaker 2: in the back end, and Connor Garland He's also tied
- 22:58Speaker 2: for the lead with twenty two points, and it has
- 23:00Speaker 2: been a pretty tough player to handle here historically in
- 23:03Speaker 2: this head to head series, he leads the Canucks as
- 23:05Speaker 2: far as active skaters against the crack and for head
- 23:07Speaker 2: to head scoring with fourteen points in fifteen games. On
- 23:12Speaker 2: the cracking side, Elie Tulinan guess who He's taken over
- 23:15Speaker 2: the krack and scoring lead now with twenty five points
- 23:18Speaker 2: on the season right now, riding his six game points
- 23:21Speaker 2: scoring streak into this matchup, ty for the longest active
- 23:25Speaker 2: streak right now in the entire League. He's got fourteen
- 23:28Speaker 2: points in the month of December. Not too far behind
- 23:31Speaker 2: him though Chandler Stevenson with twelve points in the month
- 23:34Speaker 2: of December, so matters are certainly trending upward offensively here
- 23:38Speaker 2: with the Crack and looking to extend there win streak
- 23:41Speaker 2: to five by the end of the night. Kevin Lankanan
- 23:45Speaker 2: is your confirm starter in net for the Canucks, and
- 23:47Speaker 2: it wouldn't be surprising here to see Joey de Cord
- 23:49Speaker 2: get a turn after Philip Grubauer went last evening, and
- 23:53Speaker 2: we'll have more updates for you coming up this evening,
- 23:55Speaker 2: beginning at six point thirty on your pregame show served
- 23:58Speaker 2: up by Frostbrewed Cores Light Choose Chill, and the first
- 24:02Speaker 2: match up for the Kraken and the Canucks to follow
- 24:04Speaker 2: at seven o'clock from Climate Pledge Arena. Looking forward to
- 24:08Speaker 2: having you. Also, big thank you to Brandon Bachelor for
- 24:11Speaker 2: joining us and for Krakeen this morning. I'm Mike Benton.
- 24:14Speaker 2: Have a happy Monday and enjoy the game.
