- 0:23SPEAKER_00: I only have one earpod, that's all I have.
- 0:26SPEAKER_00: I'm expecting more from a company that's looking to invest in me.
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: I'm expecting more, but I don't have them right now, so I hope the audio is okay.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: It's what it is, it's what it's gonna be.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: But you guys know I freaking love you.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: You freaking know I love you.
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: You know that you're the best.
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: Car medians, I love you guys.
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: Let's break it down.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: So, this all started yesterday on Tuesday.
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: I got up in the morning, I got ready, I went grocery shopping, so my family was all set with food, and I took off.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: I brought clothes with me, I brought stuff with me in case I stayed over.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: It was likely I was probably gonna stay over, but I didn't know how I was gonna feel, and I drove myself down to San Diego.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: Santiago and did orders for a tiny little bit.
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: Then it was time.
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: It was time to get the comedy started.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: First spot yesterday, comedy store La Jolla.
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: I'm number nine, I had a good set.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: I had a great set.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: 22 laughs in three minutes, ladies and gentlemen.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: 22 laughs in three minutes.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: The first laugh I had, or the first minute I had six, the second minute I had nine, and the third minute I had seven.
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: That made me very happy.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: 22 laughs, three minutes.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: I figured I was gonna go to the finals, and I did.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: I went to the finals of the set of the night at the La Jolla comedy store, and I did not win.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: Nope.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: The guy who won, he brought half the room.
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: There was like 20 people, maybe a little more, in the audience, and like a dozen of them were his homies and his family, and so yeah, it was it was a losing battle.
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: It was a losing battle.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: I don't think he had more laughs than I did, although I didn't really watch his set very much.
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: Um, but yeah, I thought my set was pretty good, but you know what?
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: It's what it is.
- 2:38SPEAKER_00: What are you gonna do?
- 2:39SPEAKER_00: Excuse me.
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna take a swig of water.
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: Thank you very much.
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: I sorry if that I'm so sorry about that.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: I shouldn't have.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: I was very unprofessional.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: It was very unprofessional.
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: So uh yeah, the set went really good.
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: Uh got to make a couple of networking connections there, which was really cool.
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: Get booked at another spot, uh, which was awesome.
- 3:02SPEAKER_00: I got booked at another club, which was, you know, it's always the ideal situation.
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: You go to a mic, you do your best, you put your best foot forward.
- 3:09SPEAKER_00: Maybe there's a booker or a producer there that hasn't seen you before, and then you get booked on something, and that's that's the way it's been going for me recently, this third year of comedy.
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: Uh, and so I'm excited.
- 3:20SPEAKER_00: It's been pretty cool.
- 3:21SPEAKER_00: Uh, then from there, I went to American Comedy Co.
- 3:25SPEAKER_00: I showed up about 8 45.
- 3:27SPEAKER_00: Uh the Padres game was going, so I paid$20.
- 3:30SPEAKER_00: $20 freaking dollars for parking.
- 3:33SPEAKER_00: Get the frick out of here.
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: I want to go punch myself.
- 3:35SPEAKER_00: $20 for parking.
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: Frick me.
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: Okay?
- 3:39SPEAKER_00: Frick frick frickin frick.
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: Okay?
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: Pardon my freaking French.
- 3:46SPEAKER_00: $20 for parking.
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: I went down there, uh, got a couple tickets in the bucket.
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: 90 seconds after I put tickets in the bucket, Nathan Donovan.
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: If you guys don't know him, meet him.
- 3:58SPEAKER_00: What a character.
- 3:59SPEAKER_00: 90 seconds after I put tickets in the bucket, he comes on stage, he goes, next up, Dave Thomas.
- 4:05SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, Dave Thomas?
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: What the fick?
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: Or he said on deck, Dave Thomas.
- 4:10SPEAKER_00: And so I went to the green room of the club and I was like, hey, uh, you said Dave Thomas, you mean Thompson, right?
- 4:16SPEAKER_00: And he goes, Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 4:17SPEAKER_00: Like, good to see you again.
- 4:19SPEAKER_00: I was like, bro, you high.
- 4:21SPEAKER_00: You freaking boosted right now, dude.
- 4:23SPEAKER_00: Isn't that what the kids say?
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: You're boosted?
- 4:25SPEAKER_00: Isn't that what the freaking little freaking kids say?
- 4:29SPEAKER_00: Maybe, maybe not.
- 4:30SPEAKER_00: No, but he was freaking high as a kite.
- 4:32SPEAKER_00: That dude was in space, and and I got picked, and I'm like, frick, I just walked in the dang club, and now I'm about to go up.
- 4:39SPEAKER_00: Let's go.
- 4:40SPEAKER_00: So the person before me was kind of bombing, and so he hooked him off with his big hook.
- 4:47SPEAKER_00: He has a hook, he pulls people off.
- 4:50SPEAKER_00: And then it was my turn.
- 4:51SPEAKER_00: I went up and I had a good set, just like I had at the comedy store.
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: A little bit less laughs because I had a heckler interrupting me, and there was a couple of words I should have changed that I said to him, but it was all good.
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: Uh, but they also liked the set, and then I got paid to do the set, which was great.
- 5:11SPEAKER_00: They give up money if you have a good set, which was awesome.
- 5:14SPEAKER_00: And then, and then, and then, and then, every single time I go down to San Diego, I I get really hungry at night because you do comedy and I wanted to eat.
- 5:25SPEAKER_00: I didn't have lunch yesterday because I knew that I was gonna go down to Gas Lamp District, and I knew I was gonna have drum roll please, tacos el gordo.
- 5:37SPEAKER_00: Tacos El Gordo.
- 5:39SPEAKER_00: I was gonna absolutely go insane.
- 5:42SPEAKER_00: I was probably gonna spend$40 on myself, no cap.
- 5:46SPEAKER_00: I was gonna get eight tacos and a freaking naranja uh drink, and I walk from American uh across the street over to Tacos El Gordo, and they are closed.
- 6:04SPEAKER_00: They don't ever close, they stay open until 2 a.m., 3 a.m.
- 6:08SPEAKER_00: 4 a.m.
- 6:09SPEAKER_00: They do not close.
- 6:10SPEAKER_00: I've never seen them closed, nobody's ever seen them closed, and they were closed.
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: And the disappointment on my face, the disappointment in my stomach, the disappointment in my heart.
- 6:22SPEAKER_00: It overthrew me.
- 6:26SPEAKER_00: I was pissed.
- 6:27SPEAKER_00: I was not gonna have a good set the rest of the night.
- 6:30SPEAKER_00: The two sets I did at those clubs, they were gone.
- 6:34SPEAKER_00: The happiness and joy of making the finals of set of the night at the store, gone.
- 6:39SPEAKER_00: The happiness of getting picked and going in front of almost 200 people or over 200 people at an American Comedy Club, gone.
- 6:47SPEAKER_00: Getting paid to do comedy at a big club, gone.
- 6:50SPEAKER_00: Because I didn't get El Pastor Tacos El Gordo! This is a really, really hard time for me right now.
- 7:16SPEAKER_00: But you know what?
- 7:18SPEAKER_00: I'll get through this.
- 7:19SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna get through this.
- 7:20SPEAKER_00: And so, you know, I decided that I needed to eat something.
- 7:25SPEAKER_00: I did, I decided I needed to eat something, and then I went walking around for places to eat and asking for good referrals, and nobody had any good referrals, so I just didn't eat.
- 7:36SPEAKER_00: I just didn't eat and then I walked around and I found another comedy club and I went upstairs through this hookah lounge, and then there was a comedy club upstairs, and then my friend was on stage and she was killing it in like a uh an upper attic in a back room above stairs with a curtain above a freaking hookah lounge, and she was murdering, and I was like, frick, this is so cool.
- 8:01SPEAKER_00: San Diego's so hip.
- 8:03SPEAKER_00: It's so cool, it's so hip and cool.
- 8:07SPEAKER_00: And then from there I went over to the Madhouse Comedy Club and I did a set at the Madhouse, and there was four comics in the room, and no one else, and that was just that was just great.
- 8:18SPEAKER_00: They just got my anger from the from the taco place being closed.
- 8:24SPEAKER_00: Then I went over to trailer park after dark and I did a a set there for my fourth set of the night last night.
- 8:30SPEAKER_00: I did I did a set there, and then and uh there was a guy trying to heckle me and said he didn't believe in God, and he was wearing an angel's an angel's uh jersey, which is funny, because you know you it's funny you say you don't believe in God, but you think the angels are good, dude.
- 8:46SPEAKER_00: You really do believe in miracles, dude.
- 8:48SPEAKER_00: You believe in miracles, you believe it if you believe in the angels, dude, you gotta believe in God because the angels are terrible.
- 8:55SPEAKER_00: You know what I mean?
- 8:55SPEAKER_00: I don't even watch baseball and I know that the angels are a meme.
- 8:59SPEAKER_00: You know what I mean?
- 9:01SPEAKER_00: So yeah, and then I was tired, and so I I was like, you know what?
- 9:07SPEAKER_00: Maybe if I ate at midnight, that would be a good idea.
- 9:13SPEAKER_00: That's what I said to myself.
- 9:16SPEAKER_00: So I ate.
- 9:18SPEAKER_00: I ate in and out burger by the airport in San Diego, and then I was I found myself a nice little spot to cozy up, and then I went to sleep.
- 9:29SPEAKER_00: And then I I took a whole nap in my car, and I slept all night in my car, and I was worried about homeless people.
- 9:36SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna be honest with you, I was definitely worried about homeless people, um, because I saw a few of them.
- 9:44SPEAKER_00: Before I started sleeping, I saw a few of them, and I was like, oh frick.
- 9:48SPEAKER_00: Hopefully, these homeless people don't come and try and rob me.
- 9:52SPEAKER_00: That would be terrible.
- 9:53SPEAKER_00: I don't want to get robbed by homeless people, that would not be good.
- 9:58SPEAKER_00: So um, yeah, but it turned out okay.
- 10:01SPEAKER_00: I slept okay.
- 10:02SPEAKER_00: I woke up a couple times because I was a little uncomfortable in different positions, so I just uh kind of went all over the car.
- 10:08SPEAKER_00: I was in the trunk, and then I was in the the middle seats.
- 10:12SPEAKER_00: Well, I started in the front seat, but it kind of hurts my throat when I sleep in the front seat because I sleep in my car for comedy.
- 10:20SPEAKER_00: You know, if it makes sense for work and and it's it's I can't afford to drive home if I'm doing a show or a spot or something.
- 10:27SPEAKER_00: Sometimes I gotta sometimes I gotta make money before I get to go home.
- 10:30SPEAKER_00: So it's like I it's imperative that I door dash and make money, or else I can't get home.
- 10:35SPEAKER_00: So um, yeah, so I um I I started in the front seat and then I went to the back and I laid down all of the middle seats because I got three rows in my car, and then I laid back there, but I just couldn't get quite comfortable because I don't have a mattress back there, it's kind of just hard, you know what I mean?
- 10:53SPEAKER_00: And so I was trying to get comfy.
- 10:54SPEAKER_00: I brought my pillow and I had a jacket to cover up with, and I was like, frick, like this isn't comfy.
- 11:01SPEAKER_00: And then at like I don't know, 2 a.m.
- 11:04SPEAKER_00: I was like, I'm gonna go freaking sleep in the middle of the car and just like stretch out across the middle row.
- 11:11SPEAKER_00: And then and then I woke up again at 3 something because it was a homeless guy walking by and uh it like jolted me out of my sleep.
- 11:18SPEAKER_00: He wasn't even looking at me or anything.
- 11:20SPEAKER_00: I was just I was just scared, that's all it was.
- 11:22SPEAKER_00: I was just a little scared, and then I went back to sleep because I can go back to sleep anytime, even if there's a threat of danger, so no worries, dude.
- 11:30SPEAKER_00: I got the power of God and anime on my side.
- 11:32SPEAKER_00: You kidding me?
- 11:33SPEAKER_00: I got the power of God and anime and a giant uh pair of kitchen shears because I keep kitchen shears in my car.
- 11:42SPEAKER_00: And you might wonder, why do you keep a brand new pair of sharp kitchen shears in your car, Dave?
- 11:47SPEAKER_00: Why do you do that?
- 11:48SPEAKER_00: Well, I do it because I buy shoes so often, because I buy shoes from Walmart, that every month I have to cut the tags off of the shoes while I'm out.
- 11:56SPEAKER_00: So I've always just needed a pair of scissors, and I never have one, so I just bought a pair of scissors, and the only thing I use it for is once a month cutting the tags off my new shoes, and that's just me being honest.
- 12:08SPEAKER_00: That's just me being honest.
- 12:11SPEAKER_00: That's just what it is, okay?
- 12:13SPEAKER_00: And then next thing you know, I woke up and it was like almost eight o'clock.
- 12:17SPEAKER_00: I felt energized.
- 12:19SPEAKER_00: I felt like, man, I had a decent amount of sleep.
- 12:25SPEAKER_00: My wife had texted me, she's like, you know, good morning, baby.
- 12:28SPEAKER_00: Uh she sent me a picture of our of our littlest one, our little Chloe, and I was like, man, this is a beautiful family.
- 12:35SPEAKER_00: This is why I work so hard, this is why I try so hard, uh, and this is why I I just like I work hard and I pray for things to get better and stuff because I want this family to have a freaking amazing and wonderful life, and you know, I'm just trying to put things together and make things work, made make ends meet, and it's hard, it's hard to do that and pursue something that you love.
- 12:57SPEAKER_00: It's really, really freaking hard, guys.
- 13:00SPEAKER_00: And I'm sure you guys are doing it too.
- 13:03SPEAKER_00: Those of you that are listening, I hope you guys are pursuing your dreams, and I hope you guys are pursuing things that you want to do, because it's a wonderful way to live.
- 13:11SPEAKER_00: Although it's not an easy one, or at least not for me.
- 13:14SPEAKER_00: Um, so I hope it goes better for you and whatever you decide to do.
- 13:18SPEAKER_00: But I'm happy because I got I got a healthy, wonderful family at home.
- 13:22SPEAKER_00: I got a beautiful wife, three wonderful children, and that is just the best thing in the world.
- 13:27SPEAKER_00: It's the best gift God ever gave me.
- 13:29SPEAKER_00: Really is.
- 13:30SPEAKER_00: Um you know, my faith and my and my family, it's what it's wonderful.
- 13:34SPEAKER_00: It's beautiful beautiful things, beautiful things.
- 13:38SPEAKER_00: Um now that I'm getting all zappy.
- 13:40SPEAKER_00: Now that I'm getting all zappy, um, you know, one of the things that I think about when I'm doing all this stuff is, you know, what makes sense.
- 13:50SPEAKER_00: And and I guess to finish the story, I did stay last night because I knew I had a show in San Diego tonight.
- 13:56SPEAKER_00: And then that show, after a full day's work, that show had eight comics in the room and a bartender.
- 14:07SPEAKER_00: But I had a great time because I tried out new stuff and new bits, and I feel like if you can get a little tiny chuckle out of a comic, maybe there's something there.
- 14:15SPEAKER_00: And so I didn't do it like a performative, like I'm doing all my best material for these comics.
- 14:20SPEAKER_00: I was trying new stuff, you know what I mean?
- 14:21SPEAKER_00: Everybody was kind of looking at their notes, trying new stuff, and I'm really glad I did it.
- 14:26SPEAKER_00: And I love I love the journey.
- 14:29SPEAKER_00: I'm sure the destination's gonna be wonderful, but the journey getting there, wherever that may be, uh, is amazing.
- 14:35SPEAKER_00: But Carmedians, I love you guys.
- 14:37SPEAKER_00: This was episode 15.5.
- 14:38SPEAKER_00: Please make sure to follow me on social media, Dave Thompson Comedy, at IE Comedy, at Heat Wave Comedy Tour.
- 14:45SPEAKER_00: Got dates coming up at Carmedy Podcast, and be on the lookout for a brand new podcast for me, an in person podcast.
- 14:53SPEAKER_00: Not to replace Carmody, but to add to it.
- 14:58SPEAKER_00: You guys, I love you so much.
- 14:59SPEAKER_00: Have a good night.
- 15:00SPEAKER_00: Bye!
