- 0:00Speaker 1: It's Cubby and Christine, and there's a poll on Reddit,
- 0:03Speaker 1: and it's asking people, what sounds have you not heard
- 0:06Speaker 1: in a while, but if you heard it, it would
- 0:09Speaker 1: bring you back instantly.
- 0:10Speaker 2: You know exactly what it is.
- 0:12Speaker 1: Yes.
- 0:12Speaker 2: So I'm going to throw a few of the audio
- 0:15Speaker 2: components at you. Okay.
- 0:17Speaker 1: And you tell me if they bring back any memories, Christine. Okay.
- 0:20Speaker 2: And a few are fairly obvious.
- 0:21Speaker 1: Okay.
- 0:22Speaker 2: For example... Yeah, you know.
- 0:31Speaker 1: The old internet dial-up. It could be AOL. It could
- 0:35Speaker 1: be CompuServe. It could be Prodigy. Remember Prodigy?
- 0:39Speaker 2: That was like 1990. A friend of mine had Prodigy.
- 0:41Speaker 1: Wow.
- 0:42Speaker 2: But yeah, this sound.
- 0:43Speaker 3: I remember this very well.
- 0:44Speaker 2: Can't beat it. If I didn't get a connection by here,
- 0:46Speaker 2: you got nervous.
- 0:47Speaker 3: Sometimes it didn't connect. You went through all that, and
- 0:50Speaker 3: it didn't connect.
- 0:51Speaker 1: Yes.
- 0:51Speaker 2: And then how about this for a recognizable sound? Your
- 0:55Speaker 2: best friend signs on AOL.
- 0:56Speaker 1: AOL.
- 0:57Speaker 2: Or no, you sign on AOL and then they leave.
- 1:00Speaker 3: Yeah, they left.
- 1:01Speaker 2: Then there's this. You've got mail. A lot of AOL recognizable. Welcome. That. Goodbye. That. Goodbye.
- 1:09Speaker 2: So that's all the computer stuff.
- 1:11Speaker 3: Okay.
- 1:11Speaker 2: Now, do you remember this sound? That's the beginning of
- 1:24Speaker 2: a what?
- 1:25Speaker 3: That's mighty intense, dude. What is that?
- 1:28Speaker 2: That'd be a movie theater. That was the THX intro,
- 1:33Speaker 2: they called it.
- 1:34Speaker 3: Wow.
- 1:35Speaker 2: And you would hear that. I believe that played after
- 1:37Speaker 2: all the trailers.
- 1:38Speaker 3: Right, and you would know the sound was going to
- 1:39Speaker 3: be good.
- 1:40Speaker 2: Correct.
- 1:40Speaker 3: Okay, got it.
- 1:41Speaker 2: So that's an old 90s movie theater thing. Wow.
- 1:44Speaker 1: This one might be difficult, but this was a sound
- 1:46Speaker 1: that was heard a lot in households.
- 1:48Speaker 2: 80s, 90s. Here we go. I know it's a little difficult, but.
- 1:59Speaker 3: 80s, 90s.
- 2:01Speaker 2: This is a VCR rewinding a tape.
- 2:05Speaker 3: Oh, yeah, that's a tough one.
- 2:07Speaker 2: Yeah, because, I mean, VCRs varied, I guess. Right. So
- 2:10Speaker 2: they didn't all quite sound like that.
- 2:12Speaker 3: I thought, like, you were whipping, like, cake mix, like
- 2:14Speaker 3: a handheld. That's what it sounded like.
- 2:16Speaker 2: I was baking a cake?
- 2:17Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:18Speaker 2: Okay, what about this?
- 2:23Speaker 3: Hello, 1920s calling.
- 2:26Speaker 1: Yes.
- 2:28Speaker 3: Dial-up phone.
- 2:29Speaker 1: That would be a good old rotary phone. Another easy one,
- 2:34Speaker 1: but I haven't heard this in forever.
- 2:41Speaker 3: That sounds.
- 2:42Speaker 2: This is the end.
- 2:43Speaker 3: End of a record.
- 2:44Speaker 2: Of a vinyl record.
- 2:45Speaker 3: Oh, it's so crunchy and pretty. Yeah.
- 2:48Speaker 2: I love that. Oh, yeah.
- 2:50Speaker 3: It lifted up. The needle lifted up right at the
- 2:51Speaker 3: end there.
- 2:52Speaker 2: How about this one? What? Do you know what that was?
- 2:58Speaker 3: No.
- 2:59Speaker 2: Okay.
- 3:00Speaker 1: I'll do it again for you. That is a manual
- 3:07Speaker 1: credit card machine. You put your card down.
- 3:11Speaker 2: And the card would copy and they'd be like.
- 3:15Speaker 3: Wow.
- 3:16Speaker 2: How about that?
- 3:18Speaker 3: That's tough.
- 3:19Speaker 2: Okay. How about this one?
- 3:33Speaker 3: Oh, like something coming out of the printer.
- 3:35Speaker 1: That is a dot matrix printer where it would take
- 3:38Speaker 1: a good week for nine pages to come out.
- 3:41Speaker 3: Is that my map quest? You know, my directions.
- 3:44Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 3:44Speaker 2: All right.
- 3:45Speaker 1: Another thing from Reddit that people say they recognize immediately
- 3:49Speaker 1: when they hear it is this.
- 3:51Speaker 2: When was the last time you heard a busy signal?
- 3:54Speaker 3: We don't hear that anymore.
- 3:55Speaker 2: You don't? It'll ring and go to voicemail, right?
- 3:59Speaker 1: Do you ever hear, maybe if you call Light FM,
- 4:01Speaker 1: a lot of people are calling us, but I don't.
- 4:04Speaker 2: Hear a business signal very much anymore.
- 4:06Speaker 3: Really, no.
- 4:07Speaker 1: And then finally, another very recognizable sound you probably haven't
- 4:10Speaker 1: heard in a while.
- 4:17Speaker 2: That would be the Windows 95. Start up.
- 4:21Speaker 3: Yeah, kind of waiting for that to load.
- 4:22Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 4:23Speaker 3: Yeah, that would take some time, too.
- 4:24Speaker 2: So a lot of tech involved, but, you know, pretty cool.
- 4:27Speaker 3: We had to, like, sit and wait a moment for
- 4:28Speaker 3: our tech to fire up.
- 4:31Speaker 2: If you wanted to go on your computer, you're right, Christine.
- 4:34Speaker 2: You would turn it on and wait, like, 10 minutes.
- 4:35Speaker 3: Yeah, like, get that thing going. All right, I'll be back, right?
- 4:38Speaker 2: And we'll be back with more variety from the 80s
- 4:40Speaker 2: through today.
