- 0:00Speaker 1: Anthony Rizzo, David Ross, John Maylee, Rik Kinsky Take one.
- 0:13Speaker 1: Welcome back to another episode of the Lovable Reunion podcast.
- 0:16Speaker 1: Me and My Patna David Ross joined by the best
- 0:20Speaker 1: duo I've ever had, He's ever had, John Maylee and
- 0:25Speaker 1: Eric Kinski are hitting coaches in twenty sixteen.
- 0:29Speaker 2: Welcome to the show's boys. Thank you, so pumped to
- 0:33Speaker 2: have you.
- 0:33Speaker 3: Guys.
- 0:33Speaker 4: This is this is the crew. This is the guys
- 0:37Speaker 4: that are in the batting cage.
- 0:39Speaker 3: The hitting coach life is on another level.
- 0:41Speaker 2: They're basically like, you're psychologist every single.
- 0:44Speaker 3: Day, every single day. And two good ones. Yeah, two
- 0:46Speaker 3: good ones.
- 0:47Speaker 1: Twenty sixteen, we had a two hundred and fifty two
- 0:52Speaker 1: run differential, which means we outscored our opponents by two
- 0:55Speaker 1: hundred and fifty two runs.
- 0:56Speaker 5: Good.
- 0:59Speaker 3: That was pretty good.
- 1:00Speaker 1: Guys were the masterminds behind it. This was before really
- 1:03Speaker 1: all the analytics really dove into the game. You guys
- 1:08Speaker 1: kept an old school, but news school. You were the
- 1:11Speaker 1: best duo at a time where really it was like
- 1:14Speaker 1: the first time there was actually two hitting coaches on
- 1:18Speaker 1: the teams.
- 1:18Speaker 5: That's true.
- 1:19Speaker 2: Why how did you guys work so long? Well?
- 1:23Speaker 5: His eyes are really close together.
- 1:24Speaker 6: And really hard, so that matches up good.
- 1:28Speaker 7: I looked like a skinny thing and he looks like
- 1:30Speaker 7: a whale in the head of.
- 1:33Speaker 6: Hammerhead Hamhead.
- 1:34Speaker 7: We went, I'll tell you you were go ahead.
- 1:38Speaker 5: Well we met and right away we knew. We love baseball,
- 1:41Speaker 5: We loved being in the cage, and we like to
- 1:42Speaker 5: drink a little bit. So that's a match, you know,
- 1:44Speaker 5: made He mainly now five years sober. Congratulations, very well done.
- 1:49Speaker 4: Well and now I've got it. Like the stories already
- 1:51Speaker 4: popping in. We're in Milwaukee and he's like, meet me
- 1:55Speaker 4: at what the bar. Mail is going to go up
- 1:56Speaker 4: real quick, come down, we go, we buy, you know,
- 1:59Speaker 4: everybody gets two beers and we're at the table. Males
- 2:02Speaker 4: comes down. I'm like halfway through with my other one
- 2:04Speaker 4: with my first one. Males comes down and he's down too,
- 2:08Speaker 4: and back to the bar before he got to him.
- 2:10Speaker 5: Yeah, we used to.
- 2:11Speaker 3: We used to be able to put him back. The boys. Uh,
- 2:13Speaker 3: we had a good time.
- 2:14Speaker 2: We had a good time.
- 2:15Speaker 7: We want to talk shout, we want we won the
- 2:17Speaker 7: day in the Night twenty sixteen Cobies with Joe Madden.
- 2:23Speaker 7: Letting you do your thing and being your own person,
- 2:25Speaker 7: and we went hard during the day.
- 2:27Speaker 6: We played hard. We worked hard than anybody, and you
- 2:30Speaker 6: were the.
- 2:30Speaker 4: First one there cleaned up in the cage like something
- 2:34Speaker 4: about well, it's a thing we talked. We just talked
- 2:37Speaker 4: to Addie about like some of the things you've learned.
- 2:39Speaker 4: It's about posting every single day and bringing your a
- 2:41Speaker 4: game every single day throughout the season, like you were
- 2:44Speaker 4: the probably the best I've ever been around. And from
- 2:46Speaker 4: a coaching standpoint of guys that show up and are
- 2:48Speaker 4: ready to work every single single day, you guys, I
- 2:51Speaker 4: guys did a lot.
- 2:52Speaker 1: For I don't think people understand how much Hitt and
- 2:54Speaker 1: coaches mean to you as a player every day, day
- 2:57Speaker 1: in and day out, because it was actually with YouTube.
- 3:01Speaker 1: This was before the day of every day Hitters meeting,
- 3:03Speaker 1: So we would just do a meeting a series if that.
- 3:05Speaker 1: But I would walk into the cage every single day
- 3:08Speaker 1: and I'd say, what do we got, whether it was
- 3:10Speaker 1: a males or ski and they knew exactly what I needed, exactly.
- 3:13Speaker 2: What I want.
- 3:14Speaker 1: Okay, this is where you're going to do off the sky,
- 3:15Speaker 1: this is what he's going to try to do, and
- 3:17Speaker 1: I DIBt, let's do it. And that was my skind
- 3:19Speaker 1: of report and then I would I would do my
- 3:21Speaker 1: own homework. But the routines that you guys helped me
- 3:25Speaker 1: learn as a big leader was especially you Ski you
- 3:28Speaker 1: were before malely.
- 3:29Speaker 4: But do you know anybody's routine? Can you can you
- 3:31Speaker 4: give me Ris routine?
- 3:32Speaker 5: Right? If?
- 3:34Speaker 2: Oh? Hard?
- 3:38Speaker 6: Well, it was real quick.
- 3:39Speaker 7: It's just on the dynamics of Eric and I. You know,
- 3:42Speaker 7: Eric stood in the box and I'm a big believer
- 3:45Speaker 7: and you had to stand in the box a little
- 3:46Speaker 7: bit too. I respect guys that that came before me.
- 3:49Speaker 7: I played professional baseball, but I really didn't stand in
- 3:51Speaker 7: the box and having that experience and the anxiety and
- 3:54Speaker 7: all those things that I never could experience as a player,
- 3:57Speaker 7: even though I played professional baseball, never at the level
- 4:00Speaker 7: you guys play that the things that he brought to
- 4:02Speaker 7: there were so it's just offset. What his strengths were
- 4:07Speaker 7: were my deficiencies. And one of them would be experienced.
- 4:09Speaker 7: I've experienced coaching, but I didn't have experience standing in
- 4:11Speaker 7: the box.
- 4:12Speaker 6: And I would always get with Eric.
- 4:14Speaker 7: If someone was out of line or something because he
- 4:16Speaker 7: had he has a lot of He's very confidently, very
- 4:19Speaker 7: positive guy, very respectful, but he'll come at you and
- 4:22Speaker 7: tell you the truth, and guys respect that. I mean,
- 4:25Speaker 7: there was one time David and I got into it.
- 4:26Speaker 6: One time.
- 4:27Speaker 7: You know, you tell David, I said, there was one time.
- 4:34Speaker 6: I remember this.
- 4:35Speaker 7: I come in and when David is the nicest human
- 4:38Speaker 7: being you'll ever meet and helps everybody.
- 4:40Speaker 6: He's so into the game funniest ship.
- 4:42Speaker 7: But when he played the days he played, you better
- 4:45Speaker 7: look out because he was on one and there was
- 4:47Speaker 7: no playing games. He was going out to win and
- 4:50Speaker 7: he's going to find a way to beat you no
- 4:52Speaker 7: matter what it took. And everybody knew it, and you
- 4:54Speaker 7: had to really be careful on how you address him.
- 4:56Speaker 7: So I would go over to David and tell him, Okay,
- 4:58Speaker 7: So and so's coming in, and I would tell him
- 5:01Speaker 7: he's got this, he got this, and he.
- 5:02Speaker 6: Goes, well, what the fuck is he gonna get me out?
- 5:04Speaker 7: I said, oh ho, look on, David, all right, So
- 5:07Speaker 7: the next time I go, he's gonna throw you a
- 5:09Speaker 7: bunch of slider? Well, how heart does he throw? Tell
- 5:11Speaker 7: me what he's got And I said, Okay, David, he's
- 5:13Speaker 7: got this and that because he would get and remember
- 5:16Speaker 7: he's catching right. So when he comes off the catching,
- 5:18Speaker 7: He's got John Lester in his ear about something right,
- 5:21Speaker 7: and him and Johnny are going and he's yelling at.
- 5:22Speaker 6: Johnny, do this, do that?
- 5:23Speaker 7: Because he really took control of that situation. He had
- 5:26Speaker 7: to come in. He's leading off, there's a new pitcher
- 5:28Speaker 7: coming in. He's sweating rockets, taking his shit off. He's
- 5:31Speaker 7: yelling at you Lester on the other end of the
- 5:32Speaker 7: dog out throw fucking strikes or.
- 5:34Speaker 6: Something like that.
- 5:35Speaker 7: Right, And then he's got it and I'm going to
- 5:37Speaker 7: try to talk to him before he goes up there
- 5:39Speaker 7: to hit in a big game. And you can see
- 5:41Speaker 7: where that goes where. And then Eric, that was such
- 5:45Speaker 7: a balance of the approach stuff, and he knew the
- 5:47Speaker 7: mechanics and I could get into a little more of
- 5:50Speaker 7: Kinemannic sequencing because I had to come up through that,
- 5:52Speaker 7: being through Houston and that was the new wave of
- 5:55Speaker 7: the hitting coaches.
- 5:56Speaker 6: He had to be able to talk that language. Of course,
- 5:58Speaker 6: what Eric was one of his strengths, I.
- 6:00Speaker 4: Thought was here and I couldn't hear that language, like
- 6:02Speaker 4: he couldn't hear hear that language.
- 6:04Speaker 6: Daven couldn't hear that.
- 6:05Speaker 7: And Tony said, just tell me, do I land square
- 6:06Speaker 7: to the play or you want me to ope my
- 6:07Speaker 7: hips first?
- 6:08Speaker 6: You know, that's what they wanted to hear. So I
- 6:10Speaker 6: could break it down, so I could talk to the
- 6:12Speaker 6: upstairs people digest it.
- 6:14Speaker 7: But Eric's one of his biggest strengths of the experience
- 6:16Speaker 7: was the ability to break it down in its simplest form,
- 6:19Speaker 7: to give it to a player, Hey, get your foot
- 6:21Speaker 7: down earlier, Hey start sooner.
- 6:23Speaker 6: You're late. You're not getting in a hitting position on time.
- 6:25Speaker 7: And that's really at this level most of these guys,
- 6:27Speaker 7: that's all they need. Our job is when they get
- 6:29Speaker 7: out of whack. Our job is to bring him back.
- 6:31Speaker 7: We got to bring him back physically and mentally. There
- 6:34Speaker 7: was a time one more scenario because I thought about this.
- 6:36Speaker 7: I don't know if it's a mere Garrett or let's
- 6:38Speaker 7: just tell you a little bit about who Tony was.
- 6:41Speaker 7: I don't know if it's a mere Garrett. Were playing
- 6:42Speaker 7: at Pittsburgh or Cincinnati.
- 6:45Speaker 6: And he had a home run. He threw a left
- 6:46Speaker 6: handed pitcher.
- 6:47Speaker 7: He threw Tony at fastball up and in right at
- 6:49Speaker 7: his neck, and he hit it over the fence down
- 6:50Speaker 7: the line. I don't know who it was, but for
- 6:53Speaker 7: two years, I've been telling him to stop swinging at
- 6:55Speaker 7: that pitch.
- 6:55Speaker 6: Stop so I can hit that pitch. I can hit
- 6:57Speaker 6: that pitch. And now two.
- 6:58Speaker 7: Minutes later he goes up there and hits it over
- 7:01Speaker 7: the fence.
- 7:01Speaker 6: He says, see, I told you I could hit that pitch.
- 7:04Speaker 6: But he always for it. But he's one for.
- 7:08Speaker 7: He said, hey, man, you you're one for forty off
- 7:11Speaker 7: at this pitch. You can't hit that pitch. Stop swinging
- 7:13Speaker 7: at it. I mean, it was those of the conversation
- 7:15Speaker 7: and Hinsy goes, what are you dumb ass?
- 7:17Speaker 6: Don't swing at that pitch. You can't hit that you dummy,
- 7:19Speaker 6: You know what I mean?
- 7:20Speaker 7: And that was the balance And and I think just
- 7:23Speaker 7: watching Tony and the way David played and how much
- 7:25Speaker 7: they cared in the character and Tony playing hurt and
- 7:28Speaker 7: David just concussions all over the place and just went
- 7:31Speaker 7: to his ability to lock in the game and take
- 7:33Speaker 7: over the game. Is I think one of the reasons
- 7:35Speaker 7: that after we won and seven, they picked up and
- 7:37Speaker 7: walked you off.
- 7:38Speaker 2: So we really appreciate yeah, yeah, yeah, well I appreciate that.
- 7:40Speaker 4: I I go back because you talk about your dynamic,
- 7:43Speaker 4: like just you're talking about your career. Eric Hensky is
- 7:47Speaker 4: the only one that has three rings. I think you
- 7:50Speaker 4: got Yankees as a player, one red Sox to the player,
- 7:54Speaker 4: and Chicago Cubs as a.
- 7:55Speaker 2: Coad so and he's Philly and he's loved in Philly too.
- 7:58Speaker 5: Why because I struck out the last start of the
- 8:00Speaker 5: World Series in two.
- 8:01Speaker 2: Thousands another ring for that.
- 8:04Speaker 4: But talking about a guy that knows approach, like exactly
- 8:08Speaker 4: what you said, he would tell me, roster you just
- 8:09Speaker 4: you're starting late, b you got to get started early.
- 8:11Speaker 3: Like little things like that helped me.
- 8:13Speaker 4: And there's never been a more awkward situation than playing
- 8:17Speaker 4: with a guy in Atlanta and being teammates and then
- 8:20Speaker 4: you get over to Chicago and he's flipping to the training.
- 8:25Speaker 1: Dynamics, play law or maybe you just didn't play at
- 8:28Speaker 1: the right time. Because I've had like fifteen yeah, yeah,
- 8:31Speaker 1: I played with my coaches, so now.
- 8:33Speaker 2: Yeah, maybe in one of them Ski Eric was here,
- 8:36Speaker 2: what was your first year thirteen or fourteen?
- 8:37Speaker 5: Fourteen fourteen is a first base.
- 8:39Speaker 1: Coach and I was still young and still trying to
- 8:42Speaker 1: find my way. And if there's honestly one person in
- 8:47Speaker 1: my career that I could put a stamp on as
- 8:51Speaker 1: erkin Ski because in twenty fourteen, Yeah, and I would
- 8:57Speaker 1: talk every single day every bat and he would be like, hey,
- 9:00Speaker 1: why'd you swing at that? I know why you swung
- 9:02Speaker 1: at that. And then he would say, okay, well think
- 9:04Speaker 1: about this scenario. They're not pitching you there, run around second.
- 9:07Speaker 1: He would run through all these scenarios, and then it
- 9:10Speaker 1: had me started thinking more of a hitter of when
- 9:12Speaker 1: I went up to the plate and what they were
- 9:14Speaker 1: going to throw me. And literally by halfway through that season,
- 9:17Speaker 1: it was like, hey, I know why he swung at that.
- 9:18Speaker 2: Nice. Nice.
- 9:19Speaker 1: It was more of like encouragement and also teaching. And
- 9:23Speaker 1: then in fourteen everyone always asked me, oh, why do
- 9:25Speaker 1: you stand so close to the plate. It's because he's
- 9:28Speaker 1: told me he's a left handed hitter. He's been in
- 9:30Speaker 1: the box.
- 9:30Speaker 2: He's like, dude, I used to always swing at the
- 9:33Speaker 2: pitch from the left and off the plate one hundred
- 9:36Speaker 2: percent of the time might swing at that. So he's like,
- 9:38Speaker 2: just move up. You won't hit it, you won't swing anymore.
- 9:40Speaker 1: Hit you or your move Yeah, and for I made
- 9:43Speaker 1: him a career off of hitting lefties or getting hit
- 9:46Speaker 1: by lefties.
- 9:47Speaker 2: True and that's because Eric, we's.
- 9:49Speaker 5: Put him on the plate because first of all, the
- 9:50Speaker 5: shift remember we had a lot of shift talk. He
- 9:52Speaker 5: would get in his dome and start growing up the
- 9:54Speaker 5: second a little too much, and it's like because he
- 9:55Speaker 5: was chasing either right handed cutters in or lefties that
- 9:58Speaker 5: were sinking it down and in on him right. So
- 10:00Speaker 5: if you put your dick on the plate, make the
- 10:01Speaker 5: outside pitch middle, and then just stay gap to the
- 10:03Speaker 5: app you won't swing at anything that starts in. But
- 10:06Speaker 5: I learned that from standing in the box. And when
- 10:08Speaker 5: I got to Anthony, I was like, Oh, he's a big, hairy,
- 10:10Speaker 5: left handed hitter that I relate to very well, let's
- 10:13Speaker 5: see what he does with this. And I don't know,
- 10:15Speaker 5: he's going to get hit forty times a year or
- 10:16Speaker 5: whatever it was, thirty forty times a year.
- 10:18Speaker 1: This isn't about me, but number one, number one left
- 10:21Speaker 1: handed hit by pitch of all time.
- 10:23Speaker 5: I bet can I jump in on that?
- 10:27Speaker 6: So Anthony got hit with thirty.
- 10:30Speaker 2: Sometimes that one you're yeah, oh yeah.
- 10:32Speaker 6: And we're in the playoffs and I said, Anthony, please
- 10:34Speaker 6: get off.
- 10:34Speaker 7: The plate, because you always wanted me off the Get
- 10:37Speaker 7: off the plate, because if you get hurt.
- 10:39Speaker 6: We're going to have trouble winning the World Series, buddy.
- 10:41Speaker 7: And they'll gladly being you right before, They'll let you
- 10:45Speaker 7: hit a double or a homer off them.
- 10:46Speaker 6: I promise you. That's why you get hit all the time.
- 10:49Speaker 7: And he looked at me and he said, Mals, I'm
- 10:51Speaker 7: not afraid to get hit. He said, I survived cancer.
- 10:53Speaker 7: Remember you telling me that I survived cancer. I'm not afraid.
- 10:58Speaker 2: You won't make it.
- 11:00Speaker 7: I'm not afraid of a five violence ball.
- 11:02Speaker 6: I'd beat cancer.
- 11:03Speaker 7: And ever since then, I said, my man, wow, And
- 11:07Speaker 7: that was really something that stuck with me for a
- 11:08Speaker 7: long while.
- 11:09Speaker 6: That was really cool.
- 11:09Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean with Ski there in twenty fourteen. So
- 11:14Speaker 1: on our team plane it was religiously it was Me Hinsky,
- 11:19Speaker 1: Tim Bust and Peter Chase.
- 11:23Speaker 2: Nate would sit with us.
- 11:24Speaker 1: Our video guy Nate home, and we'd all be kind
- 11:28Speaker 1: of in the front of the plane and we would
- 11:29Speaker 1: just be enjoying the plane ride.
- 11:30Speaker 2: The longer plane rides were better.
- 11:32Speaker 1: So we're flying out to San Diego and we're all
- 11:36Speaker 1: hanging and Brandon Hide as our bench coach at the time.
- 11:38Speaker 1: So Brandon Hike comes back and says, hey, skipper, who's
- 11:41Speaker 1: Rick Rennery at the time, wants to give you a
- 11:43Speaker 1: day off, and we're facing Eric Stoltz. I hated playing
- 11:46Speaker 1: in San Diego at the time because I got traded.
- 11:48Speaker 2: I stunk there, and.
- 11:50Speaker 1: I'm like, fuck, really, like, I don't want to offen
- 11:53Speaker 1: Eric's We've been probably a little over, sir.
- 11:56Speaker 8: You're like, fuck no, you play every fucking day and
- 11:59Speaker 8: you face every you fucking play. That's how you that's
- 12:02Speaker 8: how you're in respect this you post, you post, you
- 12:04Speaker 8: puft and I go to Hyder, I go, no, I'm playing.
- 12:07Speaker 2: Go tell Rick, I'm playing. I'm not no days off.
- 12:09Speaker 5: That's because nobody wants to see the backup first basement
- 12:11Speaker 5: in there. Everybody comes to see Anthony Rizzo play.
- 12:13Speaker 2: And you instilled that in it.
- 12:14Speaker 5: Yes, you got to play every day to be good
- 12:16Speaker 5: in this game. You have to.
- 12:17Speaker 2: I go out that game and hit two hormones.
- 12:19Speaker 5: Hell yeah.
- 12:20Speaker 1: And I was like that just instilled that confidence in
- 12:24Speaker 1: myself of like, this is why you play.
- 12:26Speaker 5: I was at respect for guys. I played every day
- 12:28Speaker 5: because I couldn't hit lefties that well, and I'd be
- 12:30Speaker 5: in the lineup a lot against these nasty as lefties.
- 12:32Speaker 5: I'm over three and then here comes to left the
- 12:34Speaker 5: end of the bullpen, another slider, and the dirt fucked me.
- 12:37Speaker 5: I'm out again over four. And I always had that
- 12:40Speaker 5: respect for you, how you could handle left, the stay
- 12:42Speaker 5: behind the ball, hit it to both gaps, and I
- 12:44Speaker 5: was just like, damn, this guy's on another level and
- 12:47Speaker 5: we're gonna win the World Series.
- 12:48Speaker 1: You build these relationships with your coaches, and as a
- 12:52Speaker 1: position player, the hitting coaches are on their own level.
- 12:55Speaker 1: Like you have all the other coaches in the in
- 12:58Speaker 1: the locker room, in the clubhouse, but the hitting coaches
- 13:00Speaker 1: are literally two or three guys. Now sometimes teams are four,
- 13:05Speaker 1: but they're like on their own island.
- 13:07Speaker 5: Every day.
- 13:07Speaker 2: They're getting worn out by the front.
- 13:09Speaker 1: Office every day. Why the fuck is this guy not hitting?
- 13:12Speaker 1: What is going on with this guy?
- 13:13Speaker 2: Why not hitting? Why is ross he worn out? And
- 13:16Speaker 2: then they have to come from all.
- 13:19Speaker 1: The guys up top that are I think the game's
- 13:21Speaker 1: easy from the box, with all due respect.
- 13:24Speaker 2: And you guys need to filter that.
- 13:27Speaker 1: With all due respect, right, And the best hitting coaches
- 13:31Speaker 1: I are is YouTube and James Rowson, and James Rowse
- 13:34Speaker 1: was my first hitting coach, and I just had them
- 13:36Speaker 1: with the Yankees. You guys were so good at taking
- 13:40Speaker 1: all the noise that you're getting hit with on a
- 13:42Speaker 1: daily basis, because at some point someone's gonna be in
- 13:44Speaker 1: a slump. Right, No one's going, well, you're losing sleepover
- 13:47Speaker 1: a player every single day.
- 13:49Speaker 5: What do we say? No matter what, there's always got three,
- 13:51Speaker 5: three guys hurt.
- 13:54Speaker 7: And at the end of the night, we don't sleep
- 13:56Speaker 7: because we got to fig we got to get your back.
- 13:58Speaker 6: You're out of whack. We got to get your back.
- 14:00Speaker 7: Team you were And I came in fifteen because I
- 14:02Speaker 7: was with Houston.
- 14:03Speaker 6: I left Houston to come here to coach.
- 14:08Speaker 7: And THEO called me and I was going to bring
- 14:11Speaker 7: in a hitting guy and he says, hey, you have
- 14:13Speaker 7: a hitting guy in mine.
- 14:14Speaker 6: I said yeah, to help you.
- 14:16Speaker 7: And I said yeah, And he says, well, I got
- 14:17Speaker 7: a guy I want you to think about.
- 14:19Speaker 6: And I said, oh. He said Eric Hinsky.
- 14:21Speaker 7: I knew he as a player, and I like players
- 14:25Speaker 7: that coach especially, will be my assistance because again for
- 14:28Speaker 7: that same reason, Yeah, you know, I think it's huge
- 14:31Speaker 7: because I learned a ton from him too, right and
- 14:33Speaker 7: all along, even though I was the voice a lot
- 14:35Speaker 7: of times, and those things because he respected the chain
- 14:39Speaker 7: of command in a sense. But he always would tell
- 14:41Speaker 7: me things, always would talk to me, and always and
- 14:43Speaker 7: put things in my mind, and it made me just
- 14:45Speaker 7: keep moving. So when I interviewed them, I said, okay,
- 14:49Speaker 7: I said, I'll just talk to him.
- 14:51Speaker 6: I'll get back to it. And we went.
- 14:53Speaker 7: We met somewhere in Arizona, sat down, so had a drink,
- 14:58Speaker 7: and I talked for ten minutes. I didn't ask one
- 15:00Speaker 7: thing about the swing. Was it love at first sight?
- 15:02Speaker 6: It was?
- 15:02Speaker 5: It was we're at the Lion, I remember.
- 15:07Speaker 6: And then and I just talked and I said, are
- 15:10Speaker 6: you a good dude?
- 15:11Speaker 7: Man?
- 15:11Speaker 6: Are you good people? I need a good person with me.
- 15:13Speaker 7: I need somebody I can trust that's going to have
- 15:15Speaker 7: my back when chickles south, because they're not going to
- 15:17Speaker 7: give a fuck ups there sometimes. And we need to
- 15:19Speaker 7: stay at unified group. If we're wrong, we'll admit we're
- 15:22Speaker 7: wrong together, we're right, We're going to stick together. And
- 15:25Speaker 7: he said, of course, that's exactly who I am. And
- 15:26Speaker 7: he played and we just talked about everything else but
- 15:28Speaker 7: baseball after that, and I told a called THEO right after,
- 15:30Speaker 7: and so I'm in because I need the person. The
- 15:33Speaker 7: other stuff we can all learn.
- 15:35Speaker 6: He played.
- 15:35Speaker 7: If it's still in the box he hit, he knows sure,
- 15:37Speaker 7: you know, if he needs to say the kinematics weekends
- 15:40Speaker 7: and your torso's got to go, your pelvis gott to
- 15:42Speaker 7: go before your torso.
- 15:43Speaker 5: He can say that, which he's telling me. He's telling
- 15:45Speaker 5: me the stick him a lot. Like everything I know
- 15:48Speaker 5: about hitting co or biomechanics in general at all, I
- 15:50Speaker 5: learned all from this dude. How to run a meeting,
- 15:52Speaker 5: how to be a big league hitting coach, the entire
- 15:55Speaker 5: fucking thing. I swear I got the job in Anaheim.
- 15:57Speaker 5: I was like, where's mails.
- 15:58Speaker 2: I'm I want to be the head guy.
- 16:01Speaker 5: I need this dude, because I'm way better as the assistant.
- 16:04Speaker 5: When you're around you.
- 16:06Speaker 1: Whenever I was out of whack, I'm helping with what
- 16:08Speaker 1: the fuck's And I knew that this is the best
- 16:10Speaker 1: part about these two.
- 16:12Speaker 2: I knew when I was off.
- 16:14Speaker 1: I knew any time you came to me it was
- 16:16Speaker 1: from love and because you cared, because I knew you
- 16:20Speaker 1: were grinding. If I was off, the littlest bit, the
- 16:23Speaker 1: slightest bit you were grinding on video trying to figure
- 16:26Speaker 1: out what it was talking to Nate and talking with
- 16:28Speaker 1: the higher ups about Okay, this is what we need,
- 16:31Speaker 1: what's going on, this is what he's feeling. Let's try
- 16:33Speaker 1: to put this in words. And for me, it was like,
- 16:36Speaker 1: all right, I know you have my back. I know
- 16:39Speaker 1: I could talk to you about sequencing all that stuff.
- 16:42Speaker 1: And it's like at the end of the day when
- 16:44Speaker 1: you go up to the box, like that's what you want.
- 16:47Speaker 1: You want your hitting coaches up there with you, you
- 16:49Speaker 1: want your guys, your players up there with you.
- 16:51Speaker 4: And you guys were locked in on every at bat
- 16:53Speaker 4: like you're taking that at bat because Ice at the
- 16:56Speaker 4: bench a lot like heed to be struggling.
- 16:58Speaker 3: I'm like, Riz, imagine going up there with my swing.
- 17:02Speaker 9: I remember we were in the cage and I'm just like,
- 17:05Speaker 9: I'm down on myself and I'm just like, fuck, I
- 17:08Speaker 9: just can't I can't get my barrel in the zone
- 17:11Speaker 9: long enough or whatnot.
- 17:12Speaker 1: And Rossie looks at me. He goes, bro, he goes,
- 17:16Speaker 1: you're asking me for hitting advice. Hees, I'm a two
- 17:18Speaker 1: hundred hitter. Imagine I'm a backup catcher.
- 17:21Speaker 10: Imagine having my swing advice even just flex.
- 17:29Speaker 7: He hit the home run in game seven. He came
- 17:31Speaker 7: back and he said, nails he threw.
- 17:32Speaker 6: Then Daddy's looking.
- 17:36Speaker 4: But the fact that because I sat next to you
- 17:38Speaker 4: guys a lot and all the cheering in there, but
- 17:40Speaker 4: you're locked in. Well, you talked earlier about the one
- 17:43Speaker 4: O take, and I want to go back to that.
- 17:44Speaker 4: But like you knew it was like, Okay, here comes
- 17:46Speaker 4: a slider. They went ball under riz, here comes that
- 17:49Speaker 4: backput slider. He's going to take it now he's too
- 17:51Speaker 4: oh and locked in and like the league I think
- 17:53Speaker 4: caught on later on, but like that was one of
- 17:55Speaker 4: his routine that that started, like like have the a
- 17:58Speaker 4: bat you guys talking about like just that pitch, which
- 18:02Speaker 4: is kind of contradicting now because a lot of the
- 18:05Speaker 4: new school data is like swing early OPS is higher
- 18:08Speaker 4: on the first pitch.
- 18:09Speaker 1: But Ski you taught me passed down by Carlos Delgado.
- 18:13Speaker 1: I believe the one old auto take, and I'm not kidding.
- 18:16Speaker 1: For about ten years of my career, I would want
- 18:19Speaker 1: o auto take. And the thought behind it was, you
- 18:22Speaker 1: see another pitch. I'm hitting third or fourth usually in
- 18:25Speaker 1: the lineup, so if they throw me, say they throw
- 18:28Speaker 1: me a fastball first, they're probably not going to go
- 18:29Speaker 1: back to a fastball, so then you could see a
- 18:31Speaker 1: fastball in their spin. If they go spin early, was
- 18:34Speaker 1: going to see two pitches. Worst case, you're one to one.
- 18:37Speaker 1: Most of the time, I was too old because they
- 18:39Speaker 1: didn't want me to do damage, and I would look
- 18:42Speaker 1: like a genius, like they've they throw me a bastard
- 18:45Speaker 1: changeup or a bastard pitch and I'm taking it like
- 18:46Speaker 1: spitting on them, like yeah, like almost doing like a
- 18:49Speaker 1: little sodo on them.
- 18:50Speaker 5: Like well, it came from me because in my career,
- 18:52Speaker 5: I played for twelve years.
- 18:54Speaker 3: I can the year for Toronto, by the way, shout out.
- 18:57Speaker 5: I can't tell you how many times I do a
- 18:59Speaker 5: one o pitch. It was a chaine up down and
- 19:00Speaker 5: away from a rity and I thought it was a
- 19:03Speaker 5: regular sinker or something. I was going to go deep
- 19:04Speaker 5: on it, and I rolled it over and I was
- 19:06Speaker 5: motherfucking myself the first base, jogging down the first baseline
- 19:09Speaker 5: or sprinting because I was so mad and there was
- 19:11Speaker 5: steam coming on my ears and I'm not gonna do
- 19:12Speaker 5: this ever again. And the next that bad I did
- 19:14Speaker 5: it again. So I gave it to you. I'm like
- 19:16Speaker 5: one a wattle take bro I swear eighty five percent
- 19:19Speaker 5: of the time, you're going to be two oh. And
- 19:20Speaker 5: if you're not, you're one one who cares.
- 19:22Speaker 1: And I made it my identity. Like literally, anyone who
- 19:25Speaker 1: played against me or her knew me, knew I was
- 19:28Speaker 1: one on it new everyone knew. When I got traded
- 19:30Speaker 1: in New York and Hyder was the manager of the Orioles,
- 19:33Speaker 1: our first game were in Yankee Stadium. No oh, no, no,
- 19:36Speaker 1: I take one oh. And he's from the dugout nice
- 19:40Speaker 1: auto take.
- 19:41Speaker 2: That's what I did.
- 19:43Speaker 1: He's the manager and he he knows me better than anyone,
- 19:45Speaker 1: and I just give him a little smirk. And then
- 19:48Speaker 1: eventually it's like you start playing games. Because I knew
- 19:50Speaker 1: the Orioles had to know that I took all the time,
- 19:53Speaker 1: and I took probably ninety five percent.
- 19:54Speaker 5: More like when I was at the Diamondbacks. You you'd
- 19:56Speaker 5: be in a one ozer count. I'd be coaching the diamondbackside.
- 19:59Speaker 5: You'd stare at snare right out and down am I taking?
- 20:04Speaker 1: And those are the games within the game that no
- 20:07Speaker 1: one knows. But that's from the relationships we built. And honestly,
- 20:11Speaker 1: if I didn't do that, if I didn't make that
- 20:14Speaker 1: part of my identity. I don't think him as good
- 20:15Speaker 1: as a player because I bought in fully to the
- 20:18Speaker 1: one to zero auto take, and I swear most of
- 20:22Speaker 1: the time it worked out. I mean, I don't know
- 20:23Speaker 1: what the numbers say, but the confidence in the psyche
- 20:26Speaker 1: part used.
- 20:26Speaker 5: To tell me all the time.
- 20:27Speaker 6: Stop telling that heat.
- 20:30Speaker 7: Three years, bases loaded and he's taken.
- 20:33Speaker 5: I don't know if this coincidence, but three years I
- 20:35Speaker 5: was his assistant hitting coach. I believe it was a
- 20:36Speaker 5: three time all start.
- 20:37Speaker 2: I believe you're right, sorry about it, about it, bro,
- 20:43Speaker 2: This is what on?
- 20:44Speaker 6: Well, the thing is, you could hit with two strikes.
- 20:45Speaker 6: Now you were one of the top players in baseball.
- 20:48Speaker 7: That's a whole game because the ops falls off the
- 20:52Speaker 7: map with two strikes, right, and the ops grows as
- 20:54Speaker 7: a count crow, So O two is whatever? Five eighty
- 20:57Speaker 7: one two two two, three two. If you can fight
- 21:00Speaker 7: get to another pitch in that at bat and did
- 21:03Speaker 7: to a three to two count, you're on offense again.
- 21:05Speaker 7: So we didn't consider three two.
- 21:06Speaker 5: Did you just have an.
- 21:09Speaker 2: It's like, this is why I went to ski. What
- 21:12Speaker 2: do you what do you guys? How do you guys?
- 21:15Speaker 1: Know before a game that guys were locking, especially in sixteen,
- 21:19Speaker 1: Like what made that group to you guys so special
- 21:21Speaker 1: because you guys are watching a different lens than the players.
- 21:24Speaker 5: The fact that we started twenty one and six you
- 21:27Speaker 5: guys were ready to go. In April it was freezing.
- 21:30Speaker 5: I was like, these these are killing baseballs. We had
- 21:32Speaker 5: no problem scoring runs. I mean from jump it was
- 21:35Speaker 5: we knew we were special.
- 21:36Speaker 7: The lineup was so deep that you knew you didn't
- 21:38Speaker 7: have to be the guy he.
- 21:39Speaker 2: Was hitting seven.
- 21:42Speaker 7: Yeah, so when you when you you know, when you're
- 21:44Speaker 7: on a team and you've got three or four horses,
- 21:45Speaker 7: and then you're sprinkling the young guys that are learning
- 21:48Speaker 7: and all of that. That group got to carry it
- 21:51Speaker 7: where We were good one through nine, you know what
- 21:53Speaker 7: I mean. And our catchers could hit He hit Meggie
- 21:57Speaker 7: hit Wilson. Right, you were an animal lefties.
- 22:02Speaker 2: KB because Jack's got it all started.
- 22:07Speaker 7: George, George Solaire, I mean, just think about it. So
- 22:11Speaker 7: you knew we were going to hurt you somewhere, and
- 22:13Speaker 7: we did two things. We pulled the ball in the
- 22:15Speaker 7: air so we had homers, and we walked. So that
- 22:19Speaker 7: was I was hired for coach and they then they
- 22:24Speaker 7: I don't want to get into the rest of that,
- 22:25Speaker 7: but yes, that's how. That was the recipe, and we
- 22:28Speaker 7: had the people to do that and swarps. So you
- 22:31Speaker 7: had guys that you didn't want. You walked, you didn't chase,
- 22:33Speaker 7: and then you couldn't strike out. You had to seventy
- 22:36Speaker 7: with two strikes.
- 22:37Speaker 2: That's crazy.
- 22:38Speaker 7: The league average was one eighty two at that time
- 22:40Speaker 7: or one seventy six.
- 22:41Speaker 5: Crazy.
- 22:41Speaker 6: You had to seventy with some juice.
- 22:44Speaker 2: It's not about me though. It's okay dropping, but I'm sad.
- 22:49Speaker 7: It's okay to to work and get behind in the
- 22:53Speaker 7: count because you know you're good, where other guys aren't
- 22:57Speaker 7: in that position, they get the two strikes with for
- 23:00Speaker 7: they got to go early. It is what it is,
- 23:01Speaker 7: especially the young guys until they learned themselves and learn
- 23:03Speaker 7: to tax their strengths in the zone.
- 23:05Speaker 5: You know what I mean?
- 23:05Speaker 4: And I want to get off, like I hate talking
- 23:07Speaker 4: about riz, so let's get off his topic.
- 23:10Speaker 2: It's not about you.
- 23:11Speaker 4: We do this every segment and every shows. Get on
- 23:14Speaker 4: Frizz who cares already you're retired, Nobody cares. It's not
- 23:17Speaker 4: about me. Joe talked about before sixteen about of the
- 23:22Speaker 4: b hack and all that. I want to know from
- 23:24Speaker 4: a coaching standpoint, what were Joe's strengths.
- 23:28Speaker 3: Like, how was he how did he manage?
- 23:30Speaker 5: No, No, Michael, let.
- 23:33Speaker 2: Us do everyone, everybody what's made it work?
- 23:37Speaker 7: You think about it and we can get into the
- 23:39Speaker 7: whole dynamics of the environment. But the environment, including Tim
- 23:41Speaker 7: Bus who's here today, absolutely and.
- 23:43Speaker 6: People don't realize what that what that takes. And we
- 23:46Speaker 6: really got into this.
- 23:47Speaker 7: This would be a twenty five hour show just to
- 23:49Speaker 7: go through forget what happened in the game, the prep
- 23:52Speaker 7: that went into the or the environment that was created
- 23:55Speaker 7: there they're to me.
- 23:56Speaker 2: There's the bus rides, the plays, so.
- 23:58Speaker 7: Much stress in between those lines. If we create stress
- 24:02Speaker 7: as a staff on this side of the lines, you
- 24:04Speaker 7: got a big problem Joe with Joe with the petting zoos.
- 24:08Speaker 7: And if you think you look hot, wear it all
- 24:11Speaker 7: of those things instead of we used to have to
- 24:12Speaker 7: wear suits and then.
- 24:13Speaker 6: Are you gonna get your suit Tailey cleaned?
- 24:16Speaker 7: And because we want to be better everybody because we
- 24:18Speaker 7: wear suits. No, you wear what makes you feel hot
- 24:20Speaker 7: and what you're comfortable with. Remember, on that note, you
- 24:23Speaker 7: had to get on the plane and.
- 24:26Speaker 2: Painting.
- 24:29Speaker 7: If you wear flip flops, you have to have your
- 24:31Speaker 7: toenails painted.
- 24:32Speaker 6: And I remember this story.
- 24:33Speaker 7: And then David said, so his daughter was painting his
- 24:36Speaker 7: toenails and your son said, Daddy, can I paint your tone?
- 24:38Speaker 2: Don't you ever ask me? I'm sorry to bring that
- 24:42Speaker 2: up too soon, but.
- 24:46Speaker 7: The environment on the other side had to be relaxed
- 24:50Speaker 7: and had everybody was their own dudes. But we were
- 24:52Speaker 7: a close screwed right and then but when we got
- 24:54Speaker 7: in between those lines, it was on it.
- 24:56Speaker 5: There were some dudes as a coach, never knew how
- 25:00Speaker 5: to shut up. I was always talking, right, and he's like,
- 25:03Speaker 5: step back, listen to that guy for a while. And
- 25:05Speaker 5: then the last thing he says, asking back that same
- 25:08Speaker 5: sentence in a question and let him keep talking. And
- 25:10Speaker 5: that talks so much. Dude taught me so much. The
- 25:13Speaker 5: guy's like, man, forever, you taught me how to listen.
- 25:16Speaker 5: Helped me all aspects of life for sure.
- 25:18Speaker 4: Well, you've guys had I mean, you've guys moved on
- 25:21Speaker 4: obviously had great hit. I mean, if you guys both
- 25:23Speaker 4: coached Otani.
- 25:24Speaker 7: Yeah, can I get into that when him and yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 25:27Speaker 7: so he went with the Angels.
- 25:29Speaker 10: Well KB was k kbut Trout Stanton two, Carlo Stanton
- 25:39Speaker 10: and Mike was Mike Andi and Carlo.
- 25:41Speaker 7: Yeah, if you go down the tree, it's pretty cool. Well,
- 25:43Speaker 7: I'm almost proud of I think seven guys that were
- 25:45Speaker 7: hitting coaches for me became had coaches in the Big League.
- 25:49Speaker 3: Yeah, that's cool.
- 25:49Speaker 6: That came through my sister.
- 25:50Speaker 7: So I'm very no thank you, but I'm very proud
- 25:52Speaker 7: of that because they helped me get so much better
- 25:55Speaker 7: and I learned so much from them. And I always
- 25:57Speaker 7: tried to pick a guy that has a different experience
- 25:59Speaker 7: or things so I can.
- 26:00Speaker 6: Continue to grow.
- 26:02Speaker 7: And but by far O Tani so Otani, when he
- 26:06Speaker 7: first came over, he couldn't eit a heater right, the
- 26:08Speaker 7: left handed hitter had a huge lay kick, and Ski was,
- 26:11Speaker 7: you know, we're talking about centripetal force and ship and
- 26:14Speaker 7: I didn't have them yet.
- 26:15Speaker 6: And then Ski's like.
- 26:17Speaker 7: Just get your foot down, dude. If you get your
- 26:19Speaker 7: foot down, you hit the ball hard. Get your foot down,
- 26:21Speaker 7: and that's when he got rid of the lake kick
- 26:23Speaker 7: and he went to the early stride that came from Eric.
- 26:26Speaker 5: I remember that.
- 26:27Speaker 6: But then he.
- 26:30Speaker 5: Was terribly hit like one hundred, had a huge leg kick.
- 26:32Speaker 5: He couldn't get to anything. And I just told him, like, hey,
- 26:34Speaker 5: I referenced like Chris Bryant and Freddie Freddy Freeman six
- 26:37Speaker 5: five hitters that have leveraged and they don't need to
- 26:39Speaker 5: generate with a huge leg kick, right. So I'm like,
- 26:42Speaker 5: you have to be in the ground to be able to,
- 26:44Speaker 5: you know, make a decision on time to hit the baseball, right.
- 26:46Speaker 5: Is that what we're doing. We're trying to get on
- 26:47Speaker 5: time in the ground to make a good hitting chucks right,
- 26:49Speaker 5: to make a swing decision. So he's like, okay, let
- 26:52Speaker 5: me try it in batting practice. Was this between series
- 26:56Speaker 5: the Dodgers are playing the Angels and doesn't batting practice
- 26:58Speaker 5: he hits home wrapper homer and VP's like all right,
- 27:01Speaker 5: I'm in And that was it. And now he's do you.
- 27:03Speaker 3: Get any seven hundred mimbes getting that?
- 27:05Speaker 5: I should I should get just a show.
- 27:09Speaker 4: Come on, bro, come on, showy, showy, come on. That's like, well,
- 27:13Speaker 4: you guys resume like that is just so epic. And
- 27:16Speaker 4: I I bring that up because I'm just like, what
- 27:19Speaker 4: stands out You guys have had great hitters Like what
- 27:22Speaker 4: I wasn't a great hitter and I grinded, you know,
- 27:24Speaker 4: the way we talked about. But you guys have seen
- 27:27Speaker 4: a lot of good hitters. What stands out and the
- 27:28Speaker 4: good hitters that you've seen, like championship caliber at bats
- 27:31Speaker 4: and some of the best that you've been arounds or
- 27:33Speaker 4: any any anything that you would you're teaching your son.
- 27:36Speaker 5: Right right, minus timing, they're never off time, and if
- 27:39Speaker 5: they are off time, they have the ability to like
- 27:41Speaker 5: ride their front knee and keep their bear on the
- 27:42Speaker 5: zone forever because they're so mechanically sound, like they never
- 27:46Speaker 5: get off sequence and it's crazy, you'll be able to
- 27:48Speaker 5: stay behind a baseball when it's coming at you one
- 27:50Speaker 5: hundred and then it's you know, eighty two off of
- 27:52Speaker 5: that and the same arm speed. That they never get
- 27:55Speaker 5: off time very much, and if they do, it's rare,
- 27:59Speaker 5: and like my trout Anthony Rizzo, Chris Bryant, like not
- 28:02Speaker 5: David Ross.
- 28:06Speaker 2: That's not about me.
- 28:08Speaker 5: Yeah, it's just mechanically they're sound, and they're just on time,
- 28:12Speaker 5: and they're like I said before, in the ground and
- 28:14Speaker 5: they can make a decisions.
- 28:16Speaker 7: The guys they've been around them in the best, or
- 28:17Speaker 7: they don't have any fear to try to make adjustments.
- 28:20Speaker 7: But they're very they're very You got to tell them.
- 28:24Speaker 7: As a hitting coach, in my opinion, you have to tell.
- 28:25Speaker 7: If you can't tell the player what's happening, why it's happening,
- 28:28Speaker 7: and how to fix and feel it, you shouldn't say
- 28:30Speaker 7: shit anyway. And every time the guys are hitting, they
- 28:32Speaker 7: pop the ball up in the cage and you're underneath it.
- 28:36Speaker 7: No shit, what gave that away?
- 28:37Speaker 2: It's right there?
- 28:38Speaker 6: You know what I'm saying.
- 28:39Speaker 2: Now.
- 28:40Speaker 7: If I look back at you, males, and I say,
- 28:42Speaker 7: why am I underneath it?
- 28:43Speaker 6: Then tell me if you know you know what I mean?
- 28:46Speaker 7: And I think it all comes back to timing and
- 28:48Speaker 7: what the best guys they've been around, the confidence they
- 28:50Speaker 7: believe in their swings. They know they can fucking hit,
- 28:53Speaker 7: and it just comes down to approach and being on time,
- 28:55Speaker 7: and then they get that one hit and all of
- 28:56Speaker 7: a sudden they say I'm back and nothing's changed mechanically. Now,
- 29:00Speaker 7: we will as coaches occasionally say hey, when you were
- 29:02Speaker 7: going really good, your stance was two inches further I know,
- 29:07Speaker 7: or it would be this because sometimes and it was
- 29:09Speaker 7: maybe maybe true, but I don't think that was the answer.
- 29:12Speaker 7: If you tell me your hands are here or here,
- 29:15Speaker 7: come on, you know what I mean?
- 29:16Speaker 6: Are they dropping.
- 29:16Speaker 5: Lower right here? You know?
- 29:21Speaker 6: Invertency? So something small.
- 29:22Speaker 7: But if you tell them that sometimes like you're fine,
- 29:25Speaker 7: you're doing good?
- 29:26Speaker 6: Well, two ways to do that? Fuck that.
- 29:28Speaker 7: I need something to hold on to. Bro even tell
- 29:30Speaker 7: me I'm good at one for twenty eight I ain't.
- 29:32Speaker 6: I ain't good.
- 29:33Speaker 7: You can't lie to player. You gotta tell them too
- 29:36Speaker 7: that I ain't good. Right, So hey, when we look back.
- 29:39Speaker 6: And then we'll go do all the thing.
- 29:40Speaker 7: Now, they got ways to measure you were standing four
- 29:43Speaker 7: more inches off the plate.
- 29:44Speaker 2: It's all.
- 29:44Speaker 7: It's so much easier to be a hitting coach today
- 29:46Speaker 7: in the sense of knowing if you're right or wrong
- 29:49Speaker 7: about what's happening. Like Anthony, you're laid on the fastball,
- 29:52Speaker 7: like I remember what Bryce back in uh in eighteen
- 29:57Speaker 7: or nineteen. It was nineteen when you got there the
- 29:59Speaker 7: first he was struggling and we looked back and he
- 30:03Speaker 7: wasn't able to pull the ball, and I thought he
- 30:04Speaker 7: was late all the time, and he said he didn't
- 30:06Speaker 7: feel like he was late.
- 30:07Speaker 6: And we did a bird's Eyedea, where you take the all?
- 30:09Speaker 2: Who's this talking about?
- 30:10Speaker 6: Bryce Harper?
- 30:11Speaker 5: Okay?
- 30:11Speaker 7: And then we did over the top view and it
- 30:13Speaker 7: showed here and his contact points, and I said, well,
- 30:16Speaker 7: were you best?
- 30:17Speaker 6: And whatever year he won the Mvper was almost on
- 30:19Speaker 6: the MVP. I think he won it.
- 30:21Speaker 7: And then I showed him where he was making contact
- 30:23Speaker 7: on fastballs in relation on home plate. They were all
- 30:25Speaker 7: out in front and now they're all that back here,
- 30:27Speaker 7: and he goes, I'm late, And I'm thinking to myself, yeah,
- 30:30Speaker 7: no kidding, but it's okay, how you portray it, But.
- 30:35Speaker 6: I ain't making it up.
- 30:36Speaker 2: Now.
- 30:36Speaker 7: Why you're late? I don't know you're in the box.
- 30:39Speaker 7: Why are you late? And he said that he had
- 30:41Speaker 7: worked really hard on going the opposite way in the
- 30:43Speaker 7: off season, so he's backing balls up. He was blocking
- 30:45Speaker 7: his front side and he wasn't being able to release
- 30:48Speaker 7: the head. So everything was played back here, which you
- 30:50Speaker 7: know is a lot of ground balls and bad things
- 30:52Speaker 7: the game out here.
- 30:53Speaker 6: You're lift it naturally and you get it in the here.
- 30:55Speaker 2: The hardest thing to do is repeat.
- 30:56Speaker 1: It's so easy for a little bad habit to creep
- 30:59Speaker 1: over the time.
- 31:00Speaker 7: Right, So and our job is to pay attention to this.
- 31:02Speaker 7: We have like a nowadays, we have a two week
- 31:04Speaker 7: checkup where we look back in and see all your
- 31:05Speaker 7: measurements and say, okay, did you realize you were standing
- 31:08Speaker 7: further off the plate?
- 31:09Speaker 2: Did you realize sixteen? Yeah, we didn't need it.
- 31:12Speaker 5: We didn't need it.
- 31:12Speaker 2: We want ye. Well yeah, so on that.
- 31:16Speaker 4: Like when did you guys know we were loaded? Like
- 31:19Speaker 4: we were good fifteen. We go back to fifteen. It's
- 31:23Speaker 4: like that that San Francisco series that we swept San
- 31:27Speaker 4: Francisco they were to find world champs, Like was the
- 31:29Speaker 4: light bulb?
- 31:30Speaker 2: Was like, oh, we're really good.
- 31:31Speaker 4: But there's there's some time we were like this, these
- 31:34Speaker 4: guys are a beast. I mean you said start in
- 31:36Speaker 4: the season, started season for sixteen, you're talking about sixty sixteen.
- 31:39Speaker 5: Yeah. I kind of knew instantly. Well I knew in
- 31:43Speaker 5: fifteen and at the end of fifteen, like like you said,
- 31:45Speaker 5: the Giant Series, but going into spring training, even the
- 31:49Speaker 5: guys that weren't in the big leagues, I was like,
- 31:51Speaker 5: these guys are really, really, really good fucking players. And
- 31:54Speaker 5: our team was so stacked and I really think I
- 31:57Speaker 5: remember we started off twenty one and six, and I
- 31:59Speaker 5: don't know if like one, we have one bad stretch
- 32:01Speaker 5: and we lose like seven games in a row Star
- 32:03Speaker 5: Break right before the yeah, and then nobody cares it
- 32:06Speaker 5: checked out. We came in after those games and I finished.
- 32:09Speaker 2: I finished that.
- 32:10Speaker 1: I finished sixteen All Star Break like like twelve or fifteen.
- 32:16Speaker 2: Okay, it wasn't my fault.
- 32:19Speaker 4: We told the story about lest story. He came in
- 32:21Speaker 4: and he said, we just got to get the pitching
- 32:22Speaker 4: going war. Oh but yeah, did you have fifteen fifteen?
- 32:28Speaker 6: You know what I do?
- 32:29Speaker 7: You remember in fifteen when we all said goodbye the
- 32:32Speaker 7: last game at home to Yeah, the old number of
- 32:37Speaker 7: the stealing fans, You remember, Like I should get into
- 32:39Speaker 7: that story about.
- 32:40Speaker 6: How we parted with the player of the game.
- 32:43Speaker 7: Jumped over the thing and I look up and there's
- 32:45Speaker 7: somebody's underwear going around.
- 32:47Speaker 1: After games, we would celebrate wins and we would turn
- 32:50Speaker 1: it into a club and music again, another Joe Matten thing,
- 32:54Speaker 1: bringing it in, embracing it, and we turned literally our
- 32:58Speaker 1: old locker room at Wrigley to a club, smoke machines, drinking,
- 33:03Speaker 1: and we carried that to the new one too. I
- 33:07Speaker 1: don't think it's there anymore.
- 33:09Speaker 7: So in fifteen, when we did that goodbye and I
- 33:11Speaker 7: looked around the room, we all knew something was up.
- 33:14Speaker 6: That was a good group.
- 33:15Speaker 7: Were all a lot of us had tears in our eyes,
- 33:17Speaker 7: and and Dexter we knew was going to leave. So
- 33:20Speaker 7: I'm thinking, we got to get a center field and now.
- 33:22Speaker 7: But this group's got it. We got and you look
- 33:23Speaker 7: down them, you look at Lester Area and all those
- 33:25Speaker 7: it's a joke what they got. And we got the
- 33:28Speaker 7: pitching and the position players are all young and all
- 33:31Speaker 7: you mixing with the veterans would experience. So it was
- 33:34Speaker 7: ultra talented. And then when Dexter came back. Remember in
- 33:38Speaker 7: spring training, THEO walks them out in the middle of
- 33:41Speaker 7: the spring training. We're on the fielding bumpings or some shit,
- 33:44Speaker 7: and he walks out. Here comes Dexter. We all thought
- 33:46Speaker 7: he was just coming to say goodbye. And Dexter comes,
- 33:50Speaker 7: runs out and says, boys, I'm black, you.
- 33:56Speaker 6: Know what I mean.
- 33:56Speaker 7: But and then I couldn't believe it. And then after
- 33:59Speaker 7: that it was like, okay, it's time roll man.
- 34:01Speaker 5: I know when it's a trade deadline. We're twenty two
- 34:05Speaker 5: games over five hundred and in walked the role this
- 34:07Speaker 5: chap yes, and I was like, yes, we're winning the
- 34:11Speaker 5: world shot right now.
- 34:13Speaker 1: I said this that every year when you are the
- 34:16Speaker 1: best team and you go get the best player game over.
- 34:19Speaker 5: Field, did it? Dude? He walked in. I was like, Oh,
- 34:21Speaker 5: that motherfucker's in here. It's good night, everybody.
- 34:24Speaker 1: Bad man walking in and we knew it too, and
- 34:26Speaker 1: he knew it, and he came in and he shot.
- 34:28Speaker 5: He takes his wallet out of his pocket.
- 34:30Speaker 4: Over So, going back to Anthony stories, we need, we
- 34:39Speaker 4: need a good story.
- 34:40Speaker 1: I want to tell well, I want to first before
- 34:43Speaker 1: we get into that, I want to talk about the
- 34:45Speaker 1: two strike approach that you're talking about earlier, because you know,
- 34:49Speaker 1: striking out is such a big part of the game.
- 34:51Speaker 1: Now people don't care. And for me, I hated striking
- 34:54Speaker 1: out and I always try to strike out looking more
- 34:56Speaker 1: because that means I take pictures. But with two strikes
- 34:59Speaker 1: out expanded, I would drive My hitting coach is crazy,
- 35:01Speaker 1: but I knew get into two strikes.
- 35:04Speaker 2: That I could fight off and I could.
- 35:05Speaker 1: If I could fight off that bastard pitch and get
- 35:07Speaker 1: to the next pitch, I could do damage.
- 35:09Speaker 2: So I was never scared to hit with two strikes.
- 35:11Speaker 1: But when things got real dark and tough, I knew
- 35:16Speaker 1: I had something in my back pocket.
- 35:18Speaker 2: At all times. A couple times a year, Male's ski.
- 35:21Speaker 1: You guys probably have seen this a little too much
- 35:23Speaker 1: over our time, but I would like to go into
- 35:26Speaker 1: the cage and hit.
- 35:30Speaker 2: Naked, commanding, fully naked, fully naked fully.
- 35:35Speaker 5: But shorts on first.
- 35:36Speaker 6: They start on they saw on.
- 35:39Speaker 2: Basically the process start going.
- 35:42Speaker 1: I would take my shirt off and then I would
- 35:44Speaker 1: do I would because Males was big on my stride
- 35:47Speaker 1: in length. So the shorts we had at the time
- 35:51Speaker 1: they had really tight elastic bands. They were almost like, uh,
- 35:54Speaker 1: I don't know what kind of they had, good, good waist,
- 35:57Speaker 1: So I pulled my shorts all the way down. I
- 35:59Speaker 1: was always commando on erneath before I hit, and I
- 36:01Speaker 1: would just work on my stride length off the tee
- 36:03Speaker 1: and mails his feet of me.
- 36:05Speaker 2: And it was so anybody walked down. Remember I remember
- 36:10Speaker 2: walking in Pittsburgh.
- 36:11Speaker 4: I got a photo on my phone. I'm like, well,
- 36:13Speaker 4: there's Anthony's ass again.
- 36:15Speaker 6: Well there's another time when Fount was throwing VPD.
- 36:17Speaker 7: You were in the tanking and he was a BT
- 36:19Speaker 7: pizzro you made him throw naked and I don't.
- 36:21Speaker 6: Know where we were at now, we were grind anyway.
- 36:23Speaker 2: I didn't see that.
- 36:24Speaker 6: So I told Tony. I said, Tony, you're overstriding again.
- 36:27Speaker 6: He says, all right, we'll work on it tomorrow. Guys
- 36:30Speaker 6: gets in it.
- 36:30Speaker 2: Look.
- 36:30Speaker 6: Next day he comes in the cage.
- 36:31Speaker 7: He's got no shirt on, his usual regular shorts, no
- 36:36Speaker 7: drawers on.
- 36:37Speaker 6: Comes in the cage, put the ball on the tee.
- 36:40Speaker 6: Put the ball on the tee.
- 36:41Speaker 7: He goes, drops his pants and he's standing there and
- 36:45Speaker 7: you know how he always goes like this. Now I'm
- 36:48Speaker 7: only using my peripheral vision. Thank god, I can't see
- 36:50Speaker 7: well the side of my eyes.
- 36:54Speaker 6: Thank god they're so close together.
- 36:55Speaker 7: Thank you so and he would do his little wiggle
- 36:59Speaker 7: and he would hit, and then you just use your
- 37:01Speaker 7: imagination and what that looked like.
- 37:03Speaker 6: And then it was.
- 37:04Speaker 5: It worked, It worked.
- 37:05Speaker 1: It drop percent success rate every time I kid, one
- 37:10Speaker 1: hundred percent success.
- 37:11Speaker 2: And you're this is full hacks. People at home have to.
- 37:14Speaker 1: Understand, this is a This is like I would I
- 37:17Speaker 1: would pretend I was like twenty fourteen hobby bias and
- 37:20Speaker 1: just try to swing as hard as I could, go.
- 37:22Speaker 2: Down to a knee.
- 37:23Speaker 1: Yeah, you drop a back name completely naked, like falling over,
- 37:26Speaker 1: getting back up barefoot like.
- 37:30Speaker 6: Yeah, but it worked.
- 37:31Speaker 7: Then he pulled his shorts up and you two would
- 37:33Speaker 7: hug and roll around on the ground and says, I
- 37:34Speaker 7: love this ship.
- 37:35Speaker 6: I love this ship.
- 37:36Speaker 3: Remember that.
- 37:37Speaker 7: And then we sit there and we lay all of
- 37:39Speaker 7: our heads, Hinsky's mine and Tony's head. We just laying
- 37:43Speaker 7: our back and we talk and we've been a little.
- 37:44Speaker 2: Star in the gy. These are the relationships that we had.
- 37:49Speaker 5: We had to slay the dragon, dude, we.
- 37:51Speaker 2: Had to say the dragon.
- 37:53Speaker 4: Was there anybody more quirky than Riz or like anybody
- 37:57Speaker 4: that stood out from that sixteen team that that you
- 37:59Speaker 4: guys got like Hobby and OKB was.
- 38:01Speaker 5: Pretty sobers dude, sober nuts fucking nuts. Dude, Shake wait,
- 38:08Speaker 5: shake wait, put in the two, put in the portal
- 38:09Speaker 5: and finish. What the fuck are you talking about? Dude.
- 38:13Speaker 5: I'd be like, yeah, that looks good, sick, We're as
- 38:15Speaker 5: good about that.
- 38:17Speaker 1: We would be in the shake the whole dugout.
- 38:21Speaker 2: Shake with Chile, shake nuts.
- 38:24Speaker 4: Speaking of celebrations, that was that was one of my
- 38:27Speaker 4: favorite parts we had, Like our dugout from I've never
- 38:30Speaker 4: been on a team where coaches celebrated as much as
- 38:33Speaker 4: we did in sixteen. We guys went deep and She's
- 38:37Speaker 4: like like jumping, yeah.
- 38:41Speaker 2: And it was like we start clapping and doing the
- 38:43Speaker 2: dance and stuff like we were. It was fun to be.
- 38:46Speaker 11: An other teams, yeah, because we when we would when
- 38:51Speaker 11: we came to play, they knew, like we rolled in
- 38:55Speaker 11: there like the fucking Motley Crew, bro, and we came in,
- 38:58Speaker 11: We beat your ass, and you've left.
- 39:01Speaker 2: A mess behind him, a mess. But we never like respectfully, yeah,
- 39:05Speaker 2: very respectfully.
- 39:06Speaker 4: There was no animosity on the other team. We were
- 39:08Speaker 4: just doing our thing. That's where I think Joe created.
- 39:10Speaker 4: We were so there was no outside noise.
- 39:13Speaker 5: Like if you'd roll into Chicago and you got area
- 39:15Speaker 5: at a Lester Lack Lack Yeah, Hendricks like good luck.
- 39:20Speaker 5: They were nasty as hell. Yeah, and we put up five.
- 39:23Speaker 5: So yeah, that's like.
- 39:24Speaker 6: We went out and it was us versus us. You know,
- 39:27Speaker 6: that's the old thing.
- 39:28Speaker 7: If we can not beat ourselves and just go out
- 39:30Speaker 7: play our game, well, any good team that's the way
- 39:32Speaker 7: it is, right. But we were able to do it
- 39:33Speaker 7: every day and I just remember losing in that that's
- 39:38Speaker 7: seven games or whatever, and Joe, you know, and I
- 39:40Speaker 7: just came from a place where, you know, everything was
- 39:43Speaker 7: like this. If you didn't win, everybody was all, Joe's
- 39:46Speaker 7: got the song on in his room. Don't worry, the
- 39:49Speaker 7: happy sitting there with his feet up, drinking wine. Yeah,
- 39:52Speaker 7: seven games in a row, he said, you win hard,
- 39:54Speaker 7: you lose hard. You got twenty minutes. After twenty minutes,
- 39:57Speaker 7: that's over, with time to go move on memory. Yeah,
- 40:00Speaker 7: So with twenty minutes, that music would go on with
- 40:02Speaker 7: Joe and he would drink that wine and play that song.
- 40:04Speaker 1: Everybody said, oh, okay, we're good exactly. That's leadership in
- 40:09Speaker 1: my opinion, one oh one. When when your head guy,
- 40:12Speaker 1: you see him not cavin everyone else. Okay, I can relax,
- 40:16Speaker 1: especially in today's game where it is males. You were
- 40:19Speaker 1: kind of a pioneer of your industry of not having
- 40:23Speaker 1: the big leading experience. Now it's almost like a prerequisite
- 40:27Speaker 1: if you played, you're like almost black balls from being
- 40:30Speaker 1: a coach. They want no experience, which doesn't make sense
- 40:33Speaker 1: to me because the information is great, but the experience
- 40:38Speaker 1: paired with the information is electric. There's nothing better than it.
- 40:42Speaker 4: So that's why you guys were so dynamic, and it
- 40:46Speaker 4: felt like you had two hitting coaches that could relate
- 40:48Speaker 4: to two.
- 40:48Speaker 3: Different mentalities of hitters, right.
- 40:50Speaker 4: And you guys did such a good job of balancing
- 40:54Speaker 4: that and having fun in our work and the workout
- 40:57Speaker 4: that you guys like the hitting coaches and like usually
- 41:00Speaker 4: the strength guy. They're like the boys, right, you know,
- 41:03Speaker 4: they're usually part of the boys.
- 41:04Speaker 6: And we're done in the cage all day.
- 41:05Speaker 7: You hear anything from everybody, right, and we're all trying
- 41:08Speaker 7: to figure out what do you see anything with him?
- 41:11Speaker 7: And you guys did a really good job of talking
- 41:13Speaker 7: to each other too. And I think some of the
- 41:14Speaker 7: best instruction you remember as playing is coming from your peers,
- 41:18Speaker 7: guys that stand in the box, right, for sure. And
- 41:20Speaker 7: we had a really good group where everybody worked together.
- 41:23Speaker 2: And then I would make males. He would slip to
- 41:27Speaker 2: me behind the L screen.
- 41:28Speaker 1: But he's righty, so if you're lefty with the righty arm,
- 41:31Speaker 1: you get blocked by the big pull on the L screen,
- 41:34Speaker 1: so I would never really see his arm action. So
- 41:37Speaker 1: for me, my timing was big. You know, I'm humping,
- 41:39Speaker 1: I get the leg kick and all that stuff. So
- 41:41Speaker 1: if I couldn't see the arm at all my timing
- 41:43Speaker 1: and the cages mess up. If my timing is messed
- 41:45Speaker 1: up off soft toss, I was a zoo. So I'd
- 41:48Speaker 1: make a move out from the l screen to the
- 41:51Speaker 1: side so I could see his arm flip and then
- 41:54Speaker 1: he'd like run back in and now ten years later
- 41:57Speaker 1: he's blaming me for his knee issues.
- 42:00Speaker 6: Tournament tournaments. So I would have to stand there and picture.
- 42:03Speaker 7: You're in front of a screen, so only thing here's
- 42:05Speaker 7: our arms. You know, my whole body had to be
- 42:08Speaker 7: out and he's only eighteen feet away. So as I
- 42:10Speaker 7: flip it, I've got to release it and get back
- 42:12Speaker 7: there as it's hitting it.
- 42:13Speaker 6: One hundred and ten.
- 42:14Speaker 5: I think what I learned from him too was routine
- 42:16Speaker 5: players are routine based. I was like crazy, right, but
- 42:19Speaker 5: I wanted to be the face you saw when you
- 42:21Speaker 5: walked into the cage, no matters what time it was.
- 42:23Speaker 5: You taught me that you can't not be in the cage.
- 42:25Speaker 5: So they walk in there and they have to look
- 42:26Speaker 5: for the hitting coaches. Their routines fucked up. Wow, So
- 42:29Speaker 5: I made it a point to always be there. And
- 42:31Speaker 5: that might have been, you know, nine hours a day
- 42:34Speaker 5: in the cage. But for sure I was there for you.
- 42:37Speaker 5: I was always there. Hey, absence makes the heart grow fonder,
- 42:41Speaker 5: but too much absence makes the heart wander.
- 42:45Speaker 2: What knowledge? Straight?
- 42:47Speaker 1: Now we want to talk about relationships. Yeah, I'm gonna
- 42:50Speaker 1: test you here. What what are our two songs? What
- 42:53Speaker 1: are our two favorite songs?
- 42:55Speaker 5: Every Rose has a Storm?
- 42:56Speaker 2: That's all right now?
- 42:57Speaker 5: Three? Okay? Adele? Which one though?
- 43:02Speaker 2: Olivia Rodrigo.
- 43:05Speaker 1: Drivers and Lady Gaga shallow shallo?
- 43:10Speaker 5: Yeah, very yeah.
- 43:13Speaker 1: Piano that we got We got into New York. I
- 43:15Speaker 1: think it was at sixteen. We got real late.
- 43:17Speaker 5: It wasn't a dell. You loved the dell. You love
- 43:18Speaker 5: to hit to her?
- 43:19Speaker 2: I loved it still. I walked up to him the
- 43:21Speaker 2: gym two days ago. I'm like, is Z. He's like, sorry,
- 43:25Speaker 2: what what bumping?
- 43:29Speaker 1: So we got into New York one night late, real late,
- 43:32Speaker 1: and we and you went to a karaoke bar and
- 43:34Speaker 1: we're just crazy singing every roll. Just shut the bar down.
- 43:41Speaker 1: Five six o'clock. I go to AA Bagel their clothes.
- 43:45Speaker 2: I walk in.
- 43:45Speaker 1: I'm like, tipsy, no, we're closed. I just hand them
- 43:48Speaker 1: one hundred dollars bell. I'm like, give me something, Okay.
- 43:50Speaker 2: Thank you. They give me like three bagels. They were
- 43:52Speaker 2: so they loved me.
- 43:53Speaker 5: There. Did you get any hits the next day?
- 43:55Speaker 2: I did, because you got a post.
- 43:58Speaker 5: How along you werout last night?
- 43:59Speaker 2: Doesn't you can't? For me?
- 44:02Speaker 1: I loved I really enjoyed going out, and I knew
- 44:06Speaker 1: the balance of playing every day. But when you did
- 44:08Speaker 1: go out and you had those iconic nights, you knew
- 44:12Speaker 1: the next day like, you've got to be accountable to
- 44:15Speaker 1: your teammates and you're cure and you better turn it on.
- 44:18Speaker 2: There's no like, ah, I'm tired.
- 44:20Speaker 1: Like that's the days you need to post the most,
- 44:23Speaker 1: and those are some of my favorite days.
- 44:25Speaker 7: Look, those are usually some of the better days guys
- 44:27Speaker 7: do because they don't think so much, right, they get
- 44:29Speaker 7: out of all of this and that I'm just trying
- 44:31Speaker 7: to see this ball. I'm just trying to hit the
- 44:32Speaker 7: one in the middle. Males, I'm gonna hit off his forehead. Totally,
- 44:34Speaker 7: very simple plan. You're looking for a ball in the
- 44:36Speaker 7: middle and you're going right back there, and that usually
- 44:38Speaker 7: lines your back up to where you.
- 44:39Speaker 2: Need to be for two three weeks. The lines you you.
- 44:42Speaker 7: Look at guys that come back from injuries and they're
- 44:43Speaker 7: always hot when they come back, and they think they're
- 44:45Speaker 7: not going to have any timing because they just they
- 44:47Speaker 7: don't expect anything, right.
- 44:49Speaker 6: I just want to compete here. I'm not supposed to
- 44:50Speaker 6: get it hit. I haven't played in two weeks.
- 44:52Speaker 7: And then you're not thinking and you're just hitting. And
- 44:54Speaker 7: then when you stop and you start raking, and then
- 44:56Speaker 7: you go bad a little bit, and all of a.
- 44:58Speaker 6: Sudden, I'm doing this.
- 44:58Speaker 2: I'm doing this, I'm doing that.
- 45:00Speaker 7: And that's why I think having that time away from
- 45:02Speaker 7: the park where you can get and it don't have
- 45:03Speaker 7: to be drinking all night or whatever, just getting away
- 45:06Speaker 7: from the game and spending with your family and the
- 45:09Speaker 7: guys that have the kids.
- 45:10Speaker 6: And now you go home and take care of the family.
- 45:12Speaker 3: You care about the guys you're around.
- 45:14Speaker 7: You disrespect, right, If I respect you, I'm gonna I'm not.
- 45:19Speaker 7: I'm gonna take a good secondary and lead at second
- 45:21Speaker 7: base because I'm trying to win the fucking game and
- 45:22Speaker 7: you're dogging it out there.
- 45:24Speaker 3: When I respect.
- 45:25Speaker 1: When I remember walking down the tunnel in Game seven
- 45:29Speaker 1: right to the cage in Cleveland, the cage is like
- 45:34Speaker 1: it feels like a half a mile away, it's a
- 45:35Speaker 1: long it's through the whole concourse underneath the tunnel and
- 45:39Speaker 1: through that concourse. Yet all the media, I saw David
- 45:42Speaker 1: Ortiz walking by Game seven, like saying what's up, and
- 45:44Speaker 1: I'm like zoned in and I'm going down there and
- 45:47Speaker 1: I know that you two are there, and it's like
- 45:50Speaker 1: just this calm presence of like looking at I just
- 45:54Speaker 1: remember looking at you guys and just being like yep,
- 45:57Speaker 1: like not more than five words were said, was just like, well,
- 46:01Speaker 1: that's that's the fucking did my routine, did my flips,
- 46:04Speaker 1: hit a little bit off the arm off and looked
- 46:07Speaker 1: at you guys, and just like one, let's go.
- 46:10Speaker 4: That was my like without getting all emotional, because this
- 46:12Speaker 4: is what I do. But like I remember going down
- 46:15Speaker 4: and males we it was super quiet and he got
- 46:18Speaker 4: done flipping and he like walks towards me as I'm
- 46:20Speaker 4: about to leave, He's like Rossie, Rossie, I'm like, what's
- 46:22Speaker 4: up and he just starts you started in on telling
- 46:24Speaker 4: me like what you know, like the nice things that
- 46:28Speaker 4: you said a little earlier.
- 46:29Speaker 3: I was I'll never forget that.
- 46:30Speaker 4: I was like, I was like, bro, we got I
- 46:32Speaker 4: can get rid of a game I'm getting I'm like
- 46:34Speaker 4: emotional right now, but it was like it meant a
- 46:36Speaker 4: lot to me. I'll never forget, like how you talked
- 46:37Speaker 4: about like the year and and me and and you know,
- 46:42Speaker 4: the respect you had for me and what I brought
- 46:44Speaker 4: to the team.
- 46:44Speaker 3: All that stuff was was really cool.
- 46:46Speaker 4: So thank you for that and that, but it was
- 46:48Speaker 4: it was cool to uh write for game seven, I'm
- 46:50Speaker 4: trying to get locked in and freaking males and got
- 46:53Speaker 4: me trying leaving the cage pretty game.
- 46:56Speaker 1: It's what it took, and hopefully throughout as we interview everyone,
- 47:00Speaker 1: Like I'm saying this again, I feel like, but without
- 47:04Speaker 1: you too, in my life, in my career, there's I
- 47:07Speaker 1: don't accomplish any I'm not a world champion. I don't
- 47:10Speaker 1: play for as long as I do because because of
- 47:13Speaker 1: your guidance. And I feel very lucky, blessed because seriously,
- 47:18Speaker 1: without you telling me what a lot of take getting
- 47:20Speaker 1: on the plate you us.
- 47:22Speaker 2: I know it sounds weird, but doing the shrine work
- 47:25Speaker 2: and believe in me.
- 47:29Speaker 1: I'm not the player I was in twenty sixteen, and
- 47:31Speaker 1: maybe we're not the team we were and we're not.
- 47:33Speaker 4: The player you were, but well, I wish you guys
- 47:35Speaker 4: would to help me on the two twenty batting appage,
- 47:37Speaker 4: I mean my career.
- 47:38Speaker 6: Some people you can't right.
- 47:41Speaker 2: Some people were just stunted.
- 47:44Speaker 1: It's just another really testament to the Puzzle of twenty sixteen,
- 47:50Speaker 1: where we said it in an episode before this, but
- 47:53Speaker 1: it was like without every single player in personnel, we
- 47:57Speaker 1: don't win. There's no way without males. There's no Ski
- 48:02Speaker 1: without Ski, there's no males. You guys fist pumping each other,
- 48:05Speaker 1: We're cock bumping in the dugout doing all this stuff, henn.
- 48:10Speaker 2: Screaming. If pictures even hinted at looking at our dugout
- 48:15Speaker 2: being ski would be wearing them the fuck out and
- 48:18Speaker 2: I would play with guys later on my career. Garrett
- 48:20Speaker 2: Cole is one of them, Like, Bro, I heard.
- 48:22Speaker 1: You all the time because we would just wear guys
- 48:25Speaker 1: out and scream at them. And it wasn't a disrespect thing,
- 48:29Speaker 1: it was just it was already heard.
- 48:31Speaker 4: We heard so much about winning, and here locked in
- 48:34Speaker 4: on other people who talking about carring.
- 48:35Speaker 3: You're locked in on other people's at bats because we're
- 48:38Speaker 3: all invested in one of those.
- 48:41Speaker 7: When the decks let off with that home run, you
- 48:44Speaker 7: see decks running down the first they show him and
- 48:46Speaker 7: the dug up going like this, Oh yeah, man, he goes,
- 48:49Speaker 7: fuck you Klueber, We're gonna be here all fucking nuts.
- 48:53Speaker 2: Sorry, but that's what it is. Respect all due respect.
- 49:00Speaker 7: But that's why what we felt that, you know what
- 49:02Speaker 7: I mean, because we knew we stuck together. And then
- 49:05Speaker 7: you guys, I'm sure we'll get into what happened when
- 49:07Speaker 7: the rain came, you know what I mean?
- 49:08Speaker 3: And yeah, why do you guys remember about that?
- 49:10Speaker 4: We've asked everybody about, Like I know the coaches weren't
- 49:13Speaker 4: in the room, but like we were almost dead.
- 49:17Speaker 2: And then coming.
- 49:17Speaker 4: Out of that, what did you guys feel when we
- 49:20Speaker 4: got back in and out of the rain away?
- 49:23Speaker 5: Well, I poured a drink, we all did, being honest, Yeah,
- 49:28Speaker 5: I was like, fuck, I got it.
- 49:29Speaker 7: People don't know about as.
- 49:34Speaker 5: When who's dude that hit the home er off Chatman?
- 49:38Speaker 5: Still to this day that allowed us I have ever
- 49:40Speaker 5: heard of stadium in my life. The momentum was gone.
- 49:42Speaker 5: We were like, oh God, like this.
- 49:43Speaker 6: Is city was shaken. You could feel the ground.
- 49:46Speaker 5: Movie and I was just like having a good meeting
- 49:49Speaker 5: down there in that weight room because we got to
- 49:52Speaker 5: win this thing and I can't go home and whatever.
- 49:56Speaker 5: I still do this day. I were coaches. I don't
- 49:58Speaker 5: even know what happened about it. Yeah, I have no idea.
- 50:00Speaker 3: It's it's all.
- 50:02Speaker 2: That's how tight the boys were when we were in there.
- 50:04Speaker 2: It was like, we're gonna fucking do this. We're Jays
- 50:07Speaker 2: say it in full.
- 50:08Speaker 1: But it couldn't have happened though without you too, and we
- 50:13Speaker 1: thank you for being on.
- 50:14Speaker 4: Do you have a you have a favorite moment from
- 50:17Speaker 4: two sixteen season or postseason?
- 50:20Speaker 2: You have anything that comes to mind.
- 50:21Speaker 12: I like the Giant Series and the pimped the home
- 50:25Speaker 12: run and almost him doing that was the Giant Series.
- 50:33Speaker 5: Contro hit the ball up the middle. That was a
- 50:36Speaker 5: rage fast in our dugout, we were going nuts. And
- 50:39Speaker 5: then that flight home, everybody banged up. Yeah that was
- 50:42Speaker 5: flight too.
- 50:43Speaker 1: Yeah that was a good yeah, because well we won
- 50:45Speaker 1: Game four in San Francisco, which clinch go.
- 50:48Speaker 5: Back to the face Quato if we if we didn't win.
- 50:51Speaker 2: We had Quato and Cuto nasty.
- 50:53Speaker 1: He had a great career, but he was like his
- 50:55Speaker 1: best then and we barely beat him one nothing in
- 50:58Speaker 1: Game one and we were on what four or five runs,
- 51:01Speaker 1: and we came back in the ninth and that was
- 51:02Speaker 1: kind of the Giants Achilles Heels their bullpen and it
- 51:05Speaker 1: was the even year. All this ship was like, oh fuck,
- 51:08Speaker 1: we got to play them in game five. So when
- 51:10Speaker 1: we won that game, it was like you said a
- 51:13Speaker 1: rage fast on the way home and coming back. Those
- 51:16Speaker 1: are the moments though, that made us closer. I say
- 51:19Speaker 1: this all the time to team, to our teams. When
- 51:21Speaker 1: I made the playoffs after it's like, you think we're close.
- 51:24Speaker 1: Now every single playoff game you win, we're about to
- 51:27Speaker 1: get closer. Every series we're about to get closer. And
- 51:31Speaker 1: winning at all it's like this, it's been ten years.
- 51:34Speaker 1: We haven't been together in years, hanging out like we
- 51:37Speaker 1: love you guys, like yesterday that we were all together
- 51:43Speaker 1: in this bubble of just happiness and the grind.
- 51:47Speaker 2: Yeah, its are sober now what they all happened? Yes
- 51:50Speaker 2: five years?
- 51:52Speaker 4: Thanks for having coming on man, what We're so thankful
- 51:55Speaker 4: obviously we love you and can't wait a party tonight.
- 51:58Speaker 5: Let's do it. You know, we'll do anything for you guys.
- 52:00Speaker 5: Anything I didn't have to wrap. Thanks boy,
