- Lucas: Hey Luna, ready for another episode of Learn Dutch with Fexingo? Luna: Yeah, I'm excited! What are we learning today? Lucas: Well, we've done a lot at the bakery already—bread, pastries, thank yous. But today I thought we'd focus specifically on buying pastries, like a little cake or a cookie. Luna: Oh, I love that. I can almost smell the fresh stroopwafels. Lucas: Speaking of which, if you're finding these episodes useful, you know what keeps them coming? Listener support. If Fexingo has been helping you make progress with Dutch, you can buy me a coffee at buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. It helps us keep the show ad-free. Luna: Absolutely. It's a small way to say thanks and keep the episodes rolling. Lucas: Alright, let's get into it. So imagine you walk into a cozy Dutch bakery. You see a display case full of delicious pastries. How do you ask for one? Luna: Uh... I'd probably just point and say 'this one'. Lucas: That works, but it's nicer to say: Ik wil graag een gebakje. That means 'I would like a pastry.' Let's break it down slowly: Ik wil graag een gebakje. Luna: Ik wil graag een gebakje. Lucas: Perfect. Now, the baker might ask which one, or you can just point and say that phrase. Luna: So I point at the appeltaart and say 'Ik wil graag een gebakje'. Lucas: Exactly. But then you need to know the price. So you ask: Hoeveel kost het? That's 'How much does it cost?' Say it with me: Hoeveel kost het? Luna: Hoeveel kost het? Lucas: Great. So you've asked for a pastry and the price. Now, what if you want two? You can say: Mag ik er twee? That means 'May I have two?' Luna: Mag ik er twee? So I can get one for me and one for a friend. Lucas: Precies. Now the baker will hand you the pastries and say: Hier is uw gebakje. 'Here is your pastry.' Listen closely: Hier is uw gebakje. Luna: Hier is uw gebakje. Lucas: And then you take it and say: Bedankt en tot ziens! 'Thanks and see you later!' Let's hear you say that. Luna: Bedankt en tot ziens! Lucas: Wonderful. So let's do a quick role play. I'm the baker, you're the customer. Ready? Luna: Ready. Lucas: Goedemorgen, wat kan ik voor u doen? Luna: Ik wil graag een gebakje. Lucas: Welke wilt u? Luna: Die met chocolade. Hoeveel kost het? Lucas: Vijf euro. Luna: Mag ik er twee? Lucas: Natuurlijk. Hier is uw gebakje. Luna: Bedankt en tot ziens! Lucas: Perfect, you did it! You just bought pastries in Dutch. Luna: That was fun. I think I'll actually use this next time I'm in a bakery. Lucas: Definitely. Now, before we go, let's run through the phrases one more time. First: Ik wil graag een gebakje. Luna: Ik wil graag een gebakje. Lucas: Hoeveel kost het? Luna: Hoeveel kost het? Lucas: Mag ik er twee? Luna: Mag ik er twee? Lucas: Hier is uw gebakje. Luna: Hier is uw gebakje. Lucas: And finally: Bedankt en tot ziens! Luna: Bedankt en tot ziens! Lucas: Great job. Practice these and you'll be ready for any Dutch bakery. Thanks for listening, and see you next time on Learn Dutch with Fexingo. Luna: Doei!
