- 0:05Speaker 1: It's the Craig Way Show with the voice of the
- 0:08Texas Longhorns in Hall of Fame Broadcasting, Craig Way.
- 0:17Speaker 2: Here are the Longhorns Monday as Texas comes off that
- 0:23thirty four to three winter of the Oklahoma Sooners winning
- 0:26that Red River rivalry matchup. Now, so I know a
- 0:31lot of the trends had pointed out Oklahoma and won,
- 0:33you know whatever, seven of the last ten. Now it's
- 0:36seven of the last eleven. As folks had pointed out.
- 0:38Texas can point to now having won two of the
- 0:40last three, having outscored Oklahoma in that eighty three to
- 0:45three during that time, outscoring them by eighty points. So
- 0:49they get the bragging right to get the Golden hat.
- 0:51And now it's on to Georgia and getting ready for
- 0:54the fifth ranked team in the country. Texas, by the way,
- 0:57did widen the gap in to the voting polls.
- 1:01Speaker 3: The AP Pole and the Coaches poll.
- 1:03Speaker 2: They garnered fifty six of the sixty two first place
- 1:06votes in the AP poll I believe fifty three to
- 1:09fifty five first place votes in the Coaches poll. Warrington
- 1:12is now number two in both polls following the Ducks
- 1:15win over Ohio State. But we all know that until
- 1:18the college football playoff ranking start coming out in early November,
- 1:23the rest of that doesn't matter an awful lot. It's
- 1:25about just continuing to play and get ready for the
- 1:27next one. And that was that code by Long Worn's
- 1:30head coach Steve Sarkisian. We brought.
- 2:01Speaker 4: You know, they didn't waiver, We had a sudden change.
- 2:03They went in, they played really good defense, they settled,
- 2:05they settled everything down in the second quarter, you know,
- 2:09the offense really got rolling. I think we had over
- 2:10two hundred and twenty something yards there in the second quarter,
- 2:14found some explosive plays. Again, played complimentary football. We got
- 2:17the turnover score in one play. Our special teams continue
- 2:21to play at.
- 2:21Speaker 3: A high level.
- 2:23Speaker 4: And then you know, for us, obviously the goal is
- 2:25if we can get a lead, extend the lead, try
- 2:27to make people one dimensional, and then try to go
- 2:29affect the quarterback and so to come out of the
- 2:32game with five sacks I think thirty pressures or something
- 2:35on the quarterback, that's a that's a good, you know,
- 2:38kind of recipe for success for us in a style
- 2:41of play. And on the same token, protect our quarterback.
- 2:43You know, oh you had a really good pass rush
- 2:46and ability to get to the quarterback. They sacked us
- 2:48on the first play of the game and then didn't
- 2:50give up another one after that, and so.
- 2:53Speaker 3: All in all, was really proud of our guys.
- 2:54Speaker 4: They're poise, their composure, their ability to play sixty minutes.
- 2:58I was so proud of that group that in there
- 3:00at the end uh to to maintain not giving up
- 3:03a touchdown in the game.
- 3:05Speaker 3: So, all in all was a good win for us.
- 3:07I was happy for the guys.
- 3:08Speaker 4: You know, it's always a great moment and you can
- 3:09bring the golden hat home, But as I said Saturday,
- 3:12it's more work to do and we've got a heck
- 3:14of a challenge this weekend against Georgia, very good football team.
- 3:19Have a ton of respect for coach Smart and the
- 3:21job that he's done at Georgia. They've kind of somewhat
- 3:25been the standard of college football here now for the
- 3:27last oh, you know, six seven years. You know, I
- 3:30think they've been to you know, seven SEC championship games.
- 3:33You know, they won three in a row, back to
- 3:35back national champs, competed for a third and so you know,
- 3:39they've recruited really well, they've got great schemes, are really
- 3:42well coached. You know, I know that the moment won't
- 3:45be too big for them coming into dk R. But
- 3:49with that being said, we need DKR to be rocking.
- 3:51Speaker 2: You know.
- 3:52Speaker 4: We need to make sure that that we've got a
- 3:53home field advantage and one that you know, our fans
- 3:56have done a tremendous job all year.
- 3:58Speaker 3: Uh, and we're looking forward.
- 4:00Speaker 4: For that with another night game, a lot happening in
- 4:03Austin this weekend with F one, with College Game Day
- 4:06being here, and I think to the point I made
- 4:09to the players, we need to continue to stay enamor
- 4:11with us and what we need to do and focus
- 4:13on the task at hand and not get caught up
- 4:16in what you guys are talking about or anybody else
- 4:18is talking about. It's not what other people say. It's
- 4:21actually about what we do. It's about our action and
- 4:24we can control. We can control. And that was today's
- 4:26walkthrough and implementation of the game plan, and then focus
- 4:30on it one day at a time from there. So
- 4:32great challenge, great opportunity. I know our players are looking
- 4:35forward to it. Like I said, against a very good opponent.
- 4:38Speaker 2: All right, those were the opening comments, the opening statement
- 4:41there from Sark, and then it went on to the
- 4:46questions the Q and A. For him, the first thing
- 4:50he was asked about us about the defense, which played
- 4:52so well and really on a day when they did
- 4:55a lot with the five sacks and the takeaways. What
- 4:58impressed Sark most about the defense that.
- 5:01Speaker 3: We're not a one dimensional defense.
- 5:02Speaker 4: You know, you think to yourself, Okay, where's the where's
- 5:05the holes? I would say, gosh, okay, you know there.
- 5:10You know we're we got to try to run it
- 5:12to control it so we can minimize the pass rush.
- 5:14But it's difficult to run it. Okay, you want to
- 5:17take shots. Well, we don't give up explosive passes. I
- 5:20think we gave up one explosive pass Saturday on a
- 5:22curl route. Okay, Well, maybe let's get too empty and
- 5:26spread them out and find completions. Well, the pass rush
- 5:29is getting home, and so that would be the thing
- 5:31and be you always try to look for, Okay, where
- 5:32can I gain an advantage? But I think the one
- 5:35thing in evaluating our defense is that we're playing really
- 5:38well across the board. We're not playing great against the run,
- 5:41and we're struggling against the pass or vice versa.
- 5:44Speaker 3: I think we're pretty balanced that way, all right.
- 5:48Speaker 2: The other things that you got the address, and this
- 5:51was an interesting thing he was He was asked about
- 5:55players who transfer into the program. Now, when this day
- 5:59and age, in this modern era of college football, with
- 6:03the transfer portal and nil and all of the things
- 6:06that have changed the game a bit, sometimes transfers it.
- 6:13It does hit differently, and it doesn't hit differently in
- 6:17a good way a lot of times. And the long
- 6:21runs have had some of those that were kind of
- 6:23more missed than hit. But by and large, the players
- 6:27who have transferred into the program and are playing the
- 6:30season have hit in a big way and they've they've
- 6:34made a difference. And so Sark was asked, what makes
- 6:38it work when you have the are opportunity to bring
- 6:45guys in and what you know. The other part of
- 6:52the question was when you are researching guys who have
- 6:58put their name into the portal, what goes into the process.
- 7:03How well do you know these guys? How does that
- 7:06all come together when you're trying to decide who you
- 7:10would like to take once they had put their name
- 7:12in the portal.
- 7:13Speaker 4: I think all the guys that we took, you know,
- 7:17Trey Moore, Andrew mccuba, Matthew Golden, Silas Bolden, Isaiah Bond,
- 7:24Amari Ny Black.
- 7:25Speaker 3: I feel bad if I'm forgetting somebody here.
- 7:27Speaker 1: But.
- 7:29Speaker 4: All of them, and all the d lineman obviously from
- 7:32Norton to Lola and Tia, we had some sort of
- 7:36background with. Okay, we recruited matt Golden really hard out
- 7:39of high school, so we had an idea of what
- 7:41he was made up of. We recruited Isaiah Bond really
- 7:44hard out of high school. Johnny Nansen coached two of
- 7:47the three defensive linemen and recruited you know, Jermaine lay Uh,
- 7:50Trey Moore we competed against, and then you know, the
- 7:53one that we didn't was Silas. But yet a good
- 7:56friend of mine is Jonathan Smith, who was his head
- 7:58coach at Oregon State at that time. We knew a
- 8:02lot of people from his high school in that area
- 8:05in southern California, Rancho Cucamonga High School, and so we
- 8:08just tried to dive.
- 8:09Speaker 3: Into the character and what his makeup was.
- 8:11Speaker 4: And you don't, you're not a guy of his stature
- 8:15physically and have the success that you've had at this level.
- 8:19If you don't have a huge heart if you don't
- 8:21play the game with an immense amount of courage and
- 8:23effort and resilience. And that's what we got. You know,
- 8:27we got a guy who plays that way. It's maximum effort.
- 8:31Uh exudes courage every every chance that he gets. And
- 8:35I think that that's what we see. You know, I
- 8:37reference to the team today and in our meeting, you know,
- 8:40through our good, bad and ugly session. You know, last year,
- 8:43there was a play last season. It was ironically when
- 8:46Quinny come back, he gets TCU with an interception, when
- 8:50you saw Jordan Winnington and Xavier Worthy both get up
- 8:53off the ground chase a guy down, Jordan knocks the
- 8:57ball loose and Xavier recovers the fumble and and really
- 9:00changed the momentum of that game when that game could
- 9:03have went a different direction. And I felt like the
- 9:05play Silas made Saturday on Trey's touchdown run was another
- 9:10culture play. If you want to try to exemplify what
- 9:13this team is about. Here's a guy that blocks a corner.
- 9:16He's in the backfield and Tray's about twenty yards ahead
- 9:19of him, and nowhere in there did he think to
- 9:21put his hands in the air and just let the
- 9:23guy score. I mean he turned and was sprinting to
- 9:26get to the football, and ironically enough, that ball came
- 9:30out and he was Johnny on the spot. And that
- 9:33was a seven to three game at that time, and
- 9:35how that could have really changed the complexion of that
- 9:38game if we don't score that touchdown to make it
- 9:40fourteen to three. So I'm always looking for plays to
- 9:43point out, you know, you know, amazing effort, and we
- 9:46take pride in the effort that we play with. But
- 9:49then I try to find those plays that I refer
- 9:51to him as culture plays, you know, to me, that
- 9:54was our culture that Silas has fit in beautifully too,
- 9:58that in my opinion, really kind of kickstarted us there
- 10:01in that third quarter, excuse me, second quarter.
- 10:03Speaker 2: One other question, this one about his defensive line and
- 10:06the movement that the Loghorns have employed on that defensive
- 10:10front with the ends swinging around going to three down,
- 10:13look four down, look even five down in some cases,
- 10:16and the movement off the edge as well, and Sark
- 10:20was asked how much of a factor is that in
- 10:23making it more difficult for opposing offenses?
- 10:26Speaker 4: You know, that's something again I think our defensive staff
- 10:29has done a great job with Trey Moore's another one
- 10:31of those guys that's moved around a fair amount.
- 10:34Speaker 3: You know.
- 10:35Speaker 4: Again, we feel like we've got some pretty good pass
- 10:37rushers now. And you know, as an offensive coach, if
- 10:41you know where they're going to line up every play,
- 10:42you can.
- 10:43Speaker 3: Kind of scheme and game plan for that.
- 10:44Speaker 4: But when you start to give a variety of looks
- 10:47and you can try to create some of those one
- 10:48on one matchups for these guys, that's when they are
- 10:52really at their best. And you know, a couple of
- 10:54weeks ago, it was calling, you know, working off the
- 10:56edge and he was getting the one on one Saturday,
- 10:58you saw it with an Hill with a couple of
- 11:00those one on ones to create some rushes. But other
- 11:03guys were doing it too. You know, the sack Serell gets,
- 11:06it's really a heck of a pass rush. We had
- 11:08Vernon Broughton that you know, rushing on the left tackle
- 11:10that kind of squeezed the pocket and forced the quarterback
- 11:13to flush to get the sack. So a lot of
- 11:15the times the guy that gets the sack gets the credit,
- 11:18but it's a combination of all those guys working together.
- 11:21Speaker 3: That's why I'm going into the game.
- 11:22Speaker 4: We talk so much about our rush lanes because we
- 11:24didn't want to let the quarterback escape. We want to
- 11:27make sure that pocket collapse. But yet somebody could get
- 11:29home in the one on one pass rush.
- 11:31Speaker 2: All right, we'll hear more from Sark coming up next hour.
- 11:33Up next, we have Inconceivable here on sports Radio AM
- 11:37thirteen under the zone of the iHeartRadio app.
