- 0:19Speaker 1: reading by Lucy Burgoyne. The Blue Fairy Book by Andrew Lang,
- 0:26Speaker 1: Chapter thirty Trusted John. Once upon a time there was
- 0:32Speaker 1: an old king who was so ill that he thought
- 0:35Speaker 1: to himself, I am most likely on my death bed.
- 0:39Speaker 1: Then he said, send Trusty John to me. Now, Trusted
- 0:44Speaker 1: John was his favorite servant, and was so called because
- 0:49Speaker 1: all his life he had served him so faithfully. When
- 0:53Speaker 1: he approached the beard, the king spoke to him, most
- 0:58Speaker 1: Trusted John, I feel my end is drawing near, and
- 1:02Speaker 1: I could face it without a care were it not
- 1:05Speaker 1: for my son. He is still too young to decide
- 1:09Speaker 1: everything for himself. And unless you promise me to instruct
- 1:14Speaker 1: him in all he should know, and to be to
- 1:17Speaker 1: him as a father, I shall not close my eyes
- 1:21Speaker 1: in peace. Then Trusted John answer, I will never desert him,
- 1:27Speaker 1: and will serve him faithfully, even though it should cost
- 1:31Speaker 1: me my life. Then the old king said, now I
- 1:35Speaker 1: die comforted and in peace. And then he went on.
- 1:40Speaker 1: After my death you must show him the whole castle,
- 1:44Speaker 1: all the rooms and apartments and vaults, and all the
- 1:48Speaker 1: treasures that lie in them. But you must not show
- 1:52Speaker 1: him the last room in the long passage, where the
- 1:55Speaker 1: picture of the Princess of the Golden Roof is hidden.
- 2:00Speaker 1: When he beholds that picture, he will fall violently in
- 2:04Speaker 1: love with it and go off into a dead faint.
- 2:07Speaker 1: And for her sake he will encounter many dangers. You
- 2:12Speaker 1: must guard him from this. And when Trusted John had
- 2:15Speaker 1: again given the king his hand upon it, the old
- 2:19Speaker 1: man became silent, laid his head on the pillow, and died.
- 2:25Speaker 1: When the old king had been carried to his grave,
- 2:28Speaker 1: trusted John told the young king what he had promised
- 2:32Speaker 1: his father on his death bed, and added, and I
- 2:37Speaker 1: shall assuredly keep my word, and shall be faithful to
- 2:41Speaker 1: you as I have been to him, even though it
- 2:45Speaker 1: should cost me my life. Now, when the time of
- 2:49Speaker 1: morning was over, Trusty John said to him, it is
- 2:53Speaker 1: time you should see your inheritance. I will show you
- 2:57Speaker 1: your ancestral castle. So he took him over everything and
- 3:03Speaker 1: let him see all the riches and splendid apartments, only
- 3:08Speaker 1: the one room where the picture was He did not open,
- 3:12Speaker 1: but the picture was placed so that if the door opened,
- 3:16Speaker 1: you gazed straight upon it, and it was so beautifully
- 3:20Speaker 1: painted that you imagined it lived and moved, and that
- 3:24Speaker 1: it was the most lovable and beautiful thing in the
- 3:28Speaker 1: whole world. But the young King noticed that Trusted John
- 3:33Speaker 1: always missed one door and said, why do you never
- 3:38Speaker 1: open this one for me? There is something inside that
- 3:42Speaker 1: would appall you, he answered, But the king replied, I
- 3:48Speaker 1: have seen the whole castle and shall find out what
- 3:52Speaker 1: is in there. And with these words he approached the
- 3:55Speaker 1: door and wanted to force it open, but Trusted John
- 4:00Speaker 1: held him back and said, I promised your father before
- 4:05Speaker 1: his death that you shouldn't see what that room contains.
- 4:10Speaker 1: It might bring both you and me to great grief.
- 4:14Speaker 1: Ah No, answered the young king. If I don't get in,
- 4:19Speaker 1: it will be my certain destruction. I should have no
- 4:22Speaker 1: peace night all day till I had seen what was
- 4:26Speaker 1: in the room with my own eyes. Now I don't
- 4:30Speaker 1: budge from the spot till you have opened the door.
- 4:34Speaker 1: Then Trusted John saw there was no way out of it,
- 4:38Speaker 1: so with a heavy heart and many sighs, he took
- 4:42Speaker 1: the key from the big bunch. When he had opened
- 4:45Speaker 1: the door. He stepped in first and thought to cover
- 4:50Speaker 1: the likeness so that the king might not perceive it.
- 4:53Speaker 1: But it was hopeless. The King stood on tiptoe and
- 4:57Speaker 1: looked over his shoulder, and when he saw the picture
- 5:01Speaker 1: of the maid, so beautiful and glittering with gold and
- 5:04Speaker 1: precious stones, he fell swooning to the ground. Trusty John
- 5:10Speaker 1: lifted him up, carried him to bed, and thought, sorrowfully,
- 5:15Speaker 1: the curses come upon us, Gracious Heaven, what will be
- 5:20Speaker 1: the end of it all? Then he poured wine down
- 5:23Speaker 1: his throat till he came to himself again. The first
- 5:28Speaker 1: words he spoke were, Oh, who is the original of
- 5:32Speaker 1: the beautiful picture? She is the princess of the Golden roof.
- 5:37Speaker 1: Answer Trusty John. Then the king continued, My love for
- 5:43Speaker 1: her is so great that if all the leaves on
- 5:46Speaker 1: the trees had tongues, they could not express it. My
- 5:51Speaker 1: very life depends on my winning her. You are my
- 5:55Speaker 1: most trusty John. You must stand by me. The faithful
- 6:00Speaker 1: servant pondered long how they were to set about the matter,
- 6:05Speaker 1: for it was said to be difficult even to get
- 6:07Speaker 1: into the presence of the princess. At length, he hit
- 6:12Speaker 1: upon a plan, and spoke to the king. All the
- 6:16Speaker 1: things she has about her, tables, chairs, dishes, goblets, bowls,
- 6:23Speaker 1: and all her household furniture are made of gold. You
- 6:27Speaker 1: have in your treasure five tons of gold. Let the
- 6:31Speaker 1: goldsmiths of your kingdom manufacture them into all manner of
- 6:36Speaker 1: vases and vessels, into all sorts of birds and game
- 6:41Speaker 1: and wonderful beasts that will please her. We shall go
- 6:45Speaker 1: to her with them and try our luck. The king
- 6:49Speaker 1: summoned all his goldsmiths, and they had to work hard
- 6:54Speaker 1: day and night, till at length the most magnificent things
- 6:58Speaker 1: were completed. When a ship had been laden with them,
- 7:03Speaker 1: the faithful John disguised himself as a merchant, and the
- 7:07Speaker 1: King had to do the same, so that they should
- 7:10Speaker 1: be quite unrecognizable. And so they crossed the seas and
- 7:15Speaker 1: journeyed till they reached the town where the Princess of
- 7:19Speaker 1: the Golden Roof dwelt. Trusted Jon made the king remain
- 7:23Speaker 1: behind on the ship and await his return. Perhaps he said,
- 7:29Speaker 1: I may bring the princess back with me, so see
- 7:33Speaker 1: that everything is in order. Let the gold ornaments be
- 7:37Speaker 1: arranged and the whole ship decorated Then he took a
- 7:42Speaker 1: few of the gold things in his apron, went ashore
- 7:47Speaker 1: and proceeded straight to the palace. When he came to
- 7:50Speaker 1: the courtyard, he found a beautiful maiden standing at the
- 7:54Speaker 1: well drawing water with two golden pails, And as she
- 8:00Speaker 1: was about to carry away the glittering water, she turned
- 8:04Speaker 1: round and saw the stranger and asked him who he was.
- 8:09Speaker 1: Then he replied, I am a merchant, and opening his apron,
- 8:14Speaker 1: he let her peep in. Oh my, she cried, what
- 8:19Speaker 1: beautiful gold wears. She set down her pails and examined
- 8:25Speaker 1: one thing after the other. Then she said, the princess
- 8:30Speaker 1: must see this. She has such a fancy for gold
- 8:33Speaker 1: things that she will buy up all you have. She
- 8:37Speaker 1: took him by the hand and let him into the palace,
- 8:41Speaker 1: for she was the lady's maid. When the princess had
- 8:45Speaker 1: seen the wares, she was quite enchanted and said, they
- 8:50Speaker 1: are all so beautifully made that I shall buy everything
- 8:54Speaker 1: you have. But trusty John said, I am only the
- 8:58Speaker 1: servant of a rich man merchant. What I have here
- 9:02Speaker 1: is nothing compared to what my master has on his ship.
- 9:06Speaker 1: His merchandise is more artistic and costly than anything that
- 9:11Speaker 1: has ever been made in gold before. She desired to
- 9:15Speaker 1: have everything brought up to her, but he said, there
- 9:20Speaker 1: is such a quantity of things that it would take
- 9:23Speaker 1: many days to bring them up, and they would take
- 9:27Speaker 1: up so many rooms that you would have no space
- 9:30Speaker 1: for them in your house. Thus her desire and curiosity
- 9:35Speaker 1: were excited to such an extent that at last she said,
- 9:41Speaker 1: take me to your ship. I shall go there myself
- 9:45Speaker 1: and view your master's treasures. Then Trusty John was quite
- 9:50Speaker 1: delighted and brought her to the ship, and the King,
- 9:54Speaker 1: when he beheld her, saw that she was even more
- 9:57Speaker 1: beautiful than her picture, and thought every moment that his
- 10:02Speaker 1: heart would burst. She stepped on to the ship and
- 10:06Speaker 1: the king led her inside, but Trusty John remained behind
- 10:11Speaker 1: with the steersman and ordered the ship to push off,
- 10:15Speaker 1: spread all sail, that we may fly on the ocean
- 10:19Speaker 1: like a bird in the air. Meanwhile, the King showed
- 10:24Speaker 1: the princess inside all his gold wares, every single bit
- 10:29Speaker 1: of it, dishes, goblets, bowls, the birds and game, and
- 10:34Speaker 1: all the wonderful beasts. Many hours passed thus, and she
- 10:39Speaker 1: was so happy that she did not notice that the
- 10:42Speaker 1: ship was sailing away. After she had seen the last thing.
- 10:47Speaker 1: She thanked the merchant and prepared to go home. But
- 10:51Speaker 1: when she came to the ship's side, she saw that
- 10:55Speaker 1: they were on the high seas, far from land, and
- 10:59Speaker 1: that ship was speeding on its way under full canvas. Oh,
- 11:05Speaker 1: she cried in terror. I am deceived, carried away, and
- 11:09Speaker 1: betrayed into the power of a merchant. I would rather
- 11:13Speaker 1: have died. But the king seized her hand and spake,
- 11:19Speaker 1: I am no merchant, but a king of as high
- 11:22Speaker 1: birth as yourself. And it was my great love for
- 11:26Speaker 1: you that made me carry you off by a stratagem.
- 11:30Speaker 1: The first time I saw your likeness, I fell to
- 11:34Speaker 1: the ground in a swoon. When the Princess of the
- 11:38Speaker 1: Golden Roof heard this, she was comforted, and her heart
- 11:42Speaker 1: went out to him, so that she willingly consented to
- 11:46Speaker 1: become his wife. Now it happened one day while they
- 11:50Speaker 1: were sailing on the high seas, that trusted John, sitting
- 11:54Speaker 1: on the forepart of the ship, fiddling away to himself,
- 11:59Speaker 1: observed three ravens in the air flying toward him. He
- 12:04Speaker 1: ceased playing and listened to what they were saying, for
- 12:08Speaker 1: he understood their language. The one croaked ha ha. So
- 12:14Speaker 1: he's bringing the Princess of the Golden Roof home, Yes,
- 12:18Speaker 1: answered the second, But he's not got her yet. Yes
- 12:23Speaker 1: he has, spoke the third, for she's sitting beside him
- 12:27Speaker 1: on the ship. Then number one began again and cried,
- 12:32Speaker 1: that'll not help him. When they reached the land, a
- 12:36Speaker 1: chestnut horse will dash forward to greet them. The king
- 12:40Speaker 1: will wish to mount it, and if he does, it
- 12:43Speaker 1: will gallop away with him and disappear into the air,
- 12:48Speaker 1: and he will never see his bride again. Is there
- 12:51Speaker 1: no escape for him? Asked number two. Oh. Yes, If
- 12:57Speaker 1: some one else man's quickly and shoots the horse dead
- 13:01Speaker 1: with the pistol that is sticking in the holster, then
- 13:04Speaker 1: the young king is saved. But who's to do that?
- 13:09Speaker 1: And anyone who knows it and tells him will be
- 13:12Speaker 1: turned into stone from his feet to his knees. Then
- 13:17Speaker 1: spoke number two. I know more than that, even if
- 13:21Speaker 1: the horse is slain, the young King will still not
- 13:25Speaker 1: keep his bride. When they enter the palace together, they
- 13:30Speaker 1: will find a ready made wedding shirt in a cupboard,
- 13:33Speaker 1: which looks as though it were woven of gold and silver,
- 13:37Speaker 1: but is really made of nothing but sulfur and tar.
- 13:41Speaker 1: When the king puts it on, it will burn him
- 13:44Speaker 1: to his marrow and bones. Number three asked, is there
- 13:49Speaker 1: no way of escape? Then? Oh yes, answered number two.
- 13:55Speaker 1: If someone seizes the shirt with gloved hands and throw
- 14:00Speaker 1: it into the fire and lets it burn, then the
- 14:04Speaker 1: young king is saved. But what's the good anyone knowing
- 14:09Speaker 1: this and telling it will have half his body turned
- 14:12Speaker 1: into stone, from his knees to his heart. Then number
- 14:16Speaker 1: three spake, I know yet more, though the bridal shirt
- 14:22Speaker 1: to be burnt, the king hasn't even then secured his bride.
- 14:26Speaker 1: When the dance is held after the wedding and the
- 14:30Speaker 1: young queen is dancing, she will suddenly grow deadily white
- 14:35Speaker 1: and drop down like one dead. And unless someone lifts
- 14:39Speaker 1: her up and draws three drops of blood from her
- 14:43Speaker 1: right side and spits them out again, she will die.
- 14:48Speaker 1: But if anyone who knows this betrays it, he will
- 14:52Speaker 1: be turned into stone from the crown of his head
- 14:55Speaker 1: to the soles of his feet. When the ravens had
- 14:59Speaker 1: thus conversed, they fled onward, But trusted John had taken
- 15:05Speaker 1: it all in and was sad and depressed from that
- 15:09Speaker 1: time forward for if he were silent to his master
- 15:13Speaker 1: concerning what he had heard, he would involve him in misfortune.
- 15:19Speaker 1: But if he took him into his confidence, then he
- 15:23Speaker 1: himself would forfeit his life. At last, he said, I
- 15:28Speaker 1: will stand by my master, though it should be my ruin. Now.
- 15:33Speaker 1: When they drew near the land, it came to pass
- 15:36Speaker 1: just as the ravens had predicted, and a splendid chestnut
- 15:41Speaker 1: horse bounded forward. Capital said the King, this animal shall
- 15:47Speaker 1: carry me to my palace, and was about to mount,
- 15:51Speaker 1: But Trusty John was too sharp for him, and, springing up,
- 15:55Speaker 1: quickly seized the pistol out of the holster, and the
- 16:00Speaker 1: horse dead. Then the other servants of the king, who
- 16:04Speaker 1: had no time, looked favorably on Trusty John, cried out,
- 16:09Speaker 1: what a sin to kill the beautiful beast that was
- 16:13Speaker 1: to bear the king to his palace. But the King
- 16:16Speaker 1: spake silence. Let him alone. He is ever my trusty John,
- 16:22Speaker 1: who knows for what good end he may have done
- 16:25Speaker 1: this thing. So they went on their way and entered
- 16:29Speaker 1: the palace, and there in the hall stood a cupboard
- 16:33Speaker 1: in which lay the ready made bridle shirt, looking for
- 16:37Speaker 1: all the world as though it were made of gold
- 16:40Speaker 1: and silver. The young King went toward it and was
- 16:44Speaker 1: about to take hold of it, but Trusty John, pushing
- 16:48Speaker 1: him aside, seized it with his gloved hands, threw it
- 16:53Speaker 1: hastily into the fire and let it burn. The other
- 16:57Speaker 1: servants commenced grumbling again, and said, see, he's actually burning
- 17:03Speaker 1: the king's bridle shirt. But the young King spoke, who
- 17:09Speaker 1: knows for what good purpose he does it? Let him alone.
- 17:13Speaker 1: He is my most trusty John. Then the wedding was celebrated.
- 17:19Speaker 1: The dance begun and the bride joined in, but Trusty
- 17:23Speaker 1: John watched her countenance carefully. Of a sudden she grew
- 17:28Speaker 1: deadly white and fell to the ground as if she
- 17:32Speaker 1: were dead. He at once sprung hastily toward her, lifted
- 17:38Speaker 1: her up, and bore her to a room, where he
- 17:41Speaker 1: laid her down, and, kneeling beside her, he drew three
- 17:46Speaker 1: drops of blood from her right side and spat them out.
- 17:51Speaker 1: She soon breathed again and came to herself. But the
- 17:55Speaker 1: young King had watched the proceeding, and, not knowing my
- 18:00Speaker 1: trusty John had acted as he did, he flew into
- 18:04Speaker 1: a passion and cried throw him into prison. On the
- 18:09Speaker 1: following morning, sentence was passed on Trusty John, and he
- 18:14Speaker 1: was condemned to be hanged. As he stood on the gallows,
- 18:18Speaker 1: he said, every one doomed to death has the right
- 18:22Speaker 1: to speak once before he dies, and I too have
- 18:26Speaker 1: that privilege. Yes, said the King, it shall be granted
- 18:32Speaker 1: to you. So Trusty John spoke, I am unjustly condemned,
- 18:39Speaker 1: for I have always been faithful to you. And he
- 18:42Speaker 1: proceeded to relate how he had heard the ravens conversation
- 18:47Speaker 1: on the sea, and how he had to do all
- 18:50Speaker 1: he did in order to save his master. Then the
- 18:54Speaker 1: King cried, oh, my most trusty John, pardon, pardon, take
- 19:01Speaker 1: him down. But as he uttered the last word, Trusty
- 19:06Speaker 1: John had fallen lifeless to the ground and was as stone.
- 19:11Speaker 1: The King and the Queen were in despair, and the
- 19:14Speaker 1: King spake, ah, how ill have I rewarded such great fidelity,
- 19:20Speaker 1: and made them lift up the stone image and place
- 19:23Speaker 1: it in his bedroom near his bed. As often as
- 19:27Speaker 1: he looked at it, he wept and said, oh, if
- 19:32Speaker 1: I could only restore you to life, my most trusty John.
- 19:37Speaker 1: After a time, the queen gave birth to twins, two
- 19:41Speaker 1: small sons, who throve and grew and were a constant
- 19:45Speaker 1: joy to her. One day, when the Queen was at
- 19:50Speaker 1: church and the two children sat and played with their father,
- 19:54Speaker 1: he gazed again, full of grief, on the stone statue,
- 19:59Speaker 1: and so wailed, Oh, if I could only restore you
- 20:05Speaker 1: to life, my most trusty John. Suddenly the stone began
- 20:11Speaker 1: to speak and said, yes, you can restore me to
- 20:15Speaker 1: life again, if you are prepared to sacrifice what you
- 20:20Speaker 1: hold most dear, And the king cried out, all I
- 20:24Speaker 1: have in the world, will I give up for your sake?
- 20:28Speaker 1: The stone continued, If you cut off with your own
- 20:32Speaker 1: hand the heads of your two children and smear me
- 20:36Speaker 1: with their blood, I shall come back to life. The
- 20:40Speaker 1: king was aghast when he heard that he had himself
- 20:44Speaker 1: to put his children to death, But when he thought
- 20:48Speaker 1: of Trusty John's fidelity and how he had even died
- 20:53Speaker 1: for him, he drew his sword and with his own
- 20:57Speaker 1: hand cut the heads off his children. And when he
- 21:02Speaker 1: had smeared the stone with their blood, life came back,
- 21:06Speaker 1: and Trusty John stood once more, safe and sound before him.
- 21:12Speaker 1: He spake to the King, your loyalty shall be rewarded,
- 21:17Speaker 1: and taking up the heads of the children, he placed
- 21:20Speaker 1: them on their bodies, smeared the wounds with their blood,
- 21:25Speaker 1: and in a minute they were all right again, and
- 21:28Speaker 1: jumping about as if nothing had happened. Then the king
- 21:32Speaker 1: was full of joy, and when he saw the queen coming,
- 21:36Speaker 1: he hid Trusty John and the two children in a
- 21:39Speaker 1: big cupboard. As she entered, he said to her, did
- 21:44Speaker 1: you pray in church? Yes, she answered, but my thoughts
- 21:49Speaker 1: dwelt constantly on Trusty John and of what he has
- 21:54Speaker 1: suffered for us. Then he spake, dear wife, we can
- 21:59Speaker 1: restore him to life, but the price asked is our
- 22:03Speaker 1: two little sons. We must sacrifice them. The queen grew
- 22:08Speaker 1: white and her heart sunk, but she replied, we owe
- 22:12Speaker 1: it to him on account of his great fidelity. Then
- 22:17Speaker 1: he rejoiced that she was of the same mind as
- 22:20Speaker 1: he had been, and going forward, he opened the cupboard
- 22:25Speaker 1: and fetched the two children and Trusty John out, saying,
- 22:30Speaker 1: God be praised. Trusty John is free once more, and
- 22:35Speaker 1: we have our two small sons again. Then he related
- 22:39Speaker 1: to her all that had passed, and they lived together
- 22:44Speaker 1: happily ever afterward. Footnote grim end of footnote end of
