- 0:28This is Gracelyn Keller with the Becker's Healthcare
- 0:30Podcast, and we are recording live at the
- 0:32tenth annual health IT, digital health, and RCM
- 0:35meeting. I'm currently joined by Mohammed
- 0:38Abdelaziz,
- 0:39who currently serves as the medical director
- 0:42of hospital medicine at Kingsmill Hospital at Bon
- 0:45Secours Mercy Health. So thank you so much
- 0:47for joining me today.
- 0:49To get us started, can you share a
- 0:50little bit more about yourself and your work
- 0:51in health care? Yeah. Thank you, for having
- 0:54me. So my,
- 0:56clinical background, I'm trained as an internal medicine
- 0:59physician.
- 1:00I'm a practicing hospitalist. I am also a
- 1:04physician informaticist,
- 1:05and,
- 1:07I got in medical care since I, you
- 1:10know, joined finished medical school and went into
- 1:14to medicine. So,
- 1:16been in the in health care,
- 1:18for the past,
- 1:19twenty years.
- 1:21And, currently, I serve as a medical director
- 1:24for hospital medicine at this small facility in
- 1:28the Cincinnati area, Kings Mills, which is part
- 1:31of the, larger,
- 1:33network of, Bonsignore Mercy Health.
- 1:36Perfect.
- 1:37And let's start our conversation talking about AI.
- 1:40Nearly half of medical practices reported using AI
- 1:43in some capacity in the past year, and
- 1:45it remains a key topic for health IT
- 1:47leaders. So from your perspective, what are the
- 1:49use cases that are making a difference right
- 1:51now, and how are you leveraging them in
- 1:52your organization?
- 1:54Yeah.
- 1:55I think there
- 1:57are several use cases.
- 1:59I believe as many other organizations, many organization
- 2:03and Bonsignore and other organization, there are
- 2:07still in the discovery phase. There are a
- 2:09lot of
- 2:11great solutions, but I guess, most importantly, we
- 2:14need to identify the right problems
- 2:16to solve with, such solutions.
- 2:19Ambient,
- 2:20scribe solutions,
- 2:22are,
- 2:23one of the, mostly adopted solutions. I think
- 2:27most organization
- 2:28now right now, either they adopted some sort
- 2:31of an ambient
- 2:32solution, or they are piloting, or they are
- 2:35looking at some sort of an ambient solution.
- 2:39Wonsacore is is no different.
- 2:42They have been,
- 2:43adopting and piloting,
- 2:45some solutions, especially for for outpatient.
- 2:48There are also the predictive models, analytic predictive
- 2:52models. Epic, they they it does provide,
- 2:56a lot of,
- 2:57AI powered
- 2:58predictive models, and some of them, they have
- 3:01been,
- 3:01adopted,
- 3:02by Bonsacor.
- 3:04And these,
- 3:06can change how we,
- 3:08take care of our patients.
- 3:11And as virtual care expands from AI enabled
- 3:14tools and remote monitoring to broader digital health
- 3:16platforms, introducing new tech does bring challenges.
- 3:19So what advice do you have for leaders
- 3:22navigating everything from governance to patient engagement? And
- 3:24can you share an example of how your
- 3:26organization has balanced innovation with operational constraint?
- 3:29Yeah. My take on this is,
- 3:32the way to deal with virtual care
- 3:35is virtual care is just health care. It's,
- 3:40the approach should not be any different from
- 3:43approaching
- 3:44any care we provide
- 3:46to our patient, the quality
- 3:49of the care we provide through virtual care,
- 3:51how
- 3:52we approach it in terms of, providing safe
- 3:55care,
- 3:56in terms of outcomes.
- 3:58We should look at virtual care just as
- 4:00parallel
- 4:01to in person care. I think that will
- 4:05help
- 4:05alleviate a lot of the,
- 4:07anxiety
- 4:08about doing things virtually rather than doing them,
- 4:12in person. Now with the advancement in technology,
- 4:16we can provide provide many of the aspects
- 4:18of the care virtually,
- 4:20and that can help,
- 4:23a lot of organizations
- 4:24with managing their, their workforce.
- 4:28And shifting gears slightly,
- 4:30how are you seeing recent legislation
- 4:32both at the state and federal levels affect
- 4:34health care organizations and health care IT specifically,
- 4:38and have you adjusted strategies in response?
- 4:42I think it's it's no no big surprise
- 4:44for for a lot of, organizations
- 4:46and a lot of people in in health
- 4:48care
- 4:49that,
- 4:51there would be
- 4:52less available money for,
- 4:55a lot of organizations. So
- 4:58the, most recent changes with Medicare reimbursements and
- 5:02cutting reimbursement
- 5:03that,
- 5:04affected a lot of,
- 5:06providers.
- 5:07That's probably
- 5:08it's not it's not gonna change, and probably
- 5:12a lot of organization,
- 5:13they need to adjust to the fact that
- 5:16there will be less and less,
- 5:19reimbursement,
- 5:21going into the future,
- 5:23and thus, I guess, efficiency
- 5:25becomes
- 5:26even more important in using your resources,
- 5:30wisely.
- 5:32And final question as we wrap our conversation.
- 5:35What's your top piece of advice for health
- 5:37care leaders as they prepare for further advancements
- 5:39in tech and rising demands for care?
- 5:42Yeah. I I think it's, you know, health
- 5:44care, the most important thing
- 5:47for everyone,
- 5:48who is involved in health care
- 5:52at whatever,
- 5:54shape or capacity
- 5:56is the mission.
- 5:57And as long as everybody
- 6:00is is is focused
- 6:02and everybody is oriented
- 6:04to the,
- 6:05mission,
- 6:06which is essentially taking care of patients,
- 6:10I think that's the most important thing.
- 6:12Any solution,
- 6:14any,
- 6:16projects,
- 6:17anything we do in health care should be
- 6:20guided
- 6:20by what best for our patients.
- 6:24Wonderful. Well, Mohammed, thanks so much for joining
- 6:26me today on the Becker's health care podcast
- 6:29and sharing these insights. Again, we are recording
- 6:31live at the tenth annual health IT, digital
- 6:34health, and RCM meeting. Well, thank you for
- 6:36having me.
