- 0:00Coming up. On this week's episode of hip Hop Now podcast, Eric Summon
- 0:05says he's bringing that old day back with an album called Ya three, but
- 0:12Yay says otherwise. Stove Got Cooks is warming up with a new single called
- 0:20Carbone. And my thoughts on a new album by Schoolboy Q Blue Lips.
- 0:29I don't think I understand what the title means, but I think the album
- 0:34is pretty good. Let's get into it. Welcome to hip Hop Now Podcasts.
- 0:44It from the future. You know what you do, show as out
- 0:48about that life, so disrespect the leg like hip hop is said to day's

- 1:30out for a little bit, you come back We do have a video version
- 1:36now on YouTube, and the link is in the description of the episode.
- 1:40If you don't want to, just listen to the audio version, right,
- 1:45and some people prefer one or the other. You know, I'm a big
- 1:49podcast listener. There are podcasts that I'll watch right, like Nightcap with Shannon
- 1:57Sharp. But you know, when you commute in the work, when you
- 2:01cleaning up or whatever, or in in my case where it really gets heavy
- 2:07sometimes shoveling snow, or you can call it y'all, you'd be doing y'all
- 2:12work, whatever it may be. Man, I just run through podcasts because
- 2:15it's just like a nice information I was gonna say overload, but that wouldn't
- 2:22be a good thing. But it's nice information dump of all the content I
- 2:27follow, and I follow way more than just hip hop, you know,
- 2:30sports, tech, video games, all kinds of podcasts that I get into
- 2:37that. I say sports because I'm a big sports fan. But you should
- 2:40make this podcast a companion to your podcast listening, whether it's exclusively or you
- 2:46know, you just match it with somebody else podcasts. Mainly because I'm not
- 2:52doing interviews like everybody else, But if you would like me to do interviews,
- 2:58put the comments in the comments A love big shout out to hip HOPDX
- 3:02dot com, all hip hop dot Com, and a couple of places where
- 3:07I'm getting some of these stories from. Let's get right to business. So
- 3:14I love Eric sinon. EPMD was my favorite group back in the days.
- 3:17When they broke up, I was broken by it. Never really recovered because
- 3:23I just really kind of ignored the albums that came after that, including the
- 3:27Comeback album, even though they were dope songs on that album and on the
- 3:32album after that. I think it's called unfinished No, I don't know something
- 3:38business. But nevertheless, I kind of, you know, fell back on
- 3:43epm D, even though I got a bested epm D on my phone that
- 3:47I listened to and all of that. And over the years when they would
- 3:52do interviews, Eric sermon specifically from time to time would kind of annoy me
- 3:59a little bit. And I didn't know if it was his personality the moment,
- 4:04whether he was on something. I don't think he was on something.
- 4:06I think that's just him. But he always talked like the stream of consciousness,
- 4:14and sometimes it you know, if he talked for so long, like
- 4:18on a drink, champs or whatever. He would contradict things that he said
- 4:23earlier because it's kind of rambling and it's just something personal with me. With
- 4:27it's difficult to watch somebody not slow down and think all the time before they
- 4:32talk. But in recent interviews, I don't know what was going on before,
- 4:39but he seemed a little bit different and it didn't seem like stream of
- 4:43consciousness, and maybe it was edited, who knows, But nevertheless, it's
- 4:46good interviews because Eric Simmon is a legend in his game, legendary producer,
- 4:51legendary rapper. He has so many credits, insights, admiration. He talked
- 4:58about, you know, working what it's like working with doctor Dre, all
- 5:00of that, but more What was more interesting about the interview I saw and
- 5:09I saw this on Hip Hop d X dot com. I don't know if
- 5:11it's their original video, but that's why I saw it. What was most
- 5:15interesting was when he talked about Kanye West and how he works with him from
- 5:21time to time and you know how great he is to work with because he
- 5:26listens to Eric Simon and Eric Simon's goal working with Ya on a couple of
- 5:31songs was to bring the old Ya back now when people hear that, you
- 5:35know, I missed the old YEA. First of all, Kanye West does
- 5:40not like okay, He does not like to hear that. But generally when
- 5:45people say that, they just want him to get back to music that felt
- 5:50so entrenched within the black community without spewing hate towards another community. The music
- 5:58was more soulful and and probably most importantly, Yay was just dead to try
- 6:04to be the best rapper, Like that's it. Not to make a statement
- 6:10about politics or race or everything, all illuminati and conspiracy theories, but to
- 6:15really just be the best rapper. And that's what Eric Simon wanted to do
- 6:19with this Yay three album. And he said they did a couple of joints
- 6:25and he was like, I got him, I got it, I got
- 6:28the old Yay back. He rap it, I got him, y'all.
- 6:31You know, we just need to finish, but I got him for y'all
- 6:34get ready. So a part of me was like, well, I don't
- 6:41know if it's going to change anything he's done so far, but it would
- 6:45be interesting to hear what the old Yay sounds like today. Wow. Kanye
- 6:51West called Wind the Back because you know what happened. People heard Eric Simon
- 6:58say that people trust Eric Simon. They probably ran over to ya, like,
- 7:00yo, you got an album called Yea three? You know, you
- 7:05know the old yay back, oh yay back, and they just wound up,
- 7:09probably irritating himself. This is uh And just to confirm yes, the
- 7:14interview was with Hip Hop d X. Let's see, let's find what Kanye
- 7:19said. Kanye said, this is fake news. Ain't no album called why
- 7:29three. It's called Why three? I said, ya three, Ain't no
- 7:31album called why three? And ain't nobody trying to be the old ya?
- 7:36When I made eight O eights and Heartbreaks, people were running around talking about
- 7:44they missed the old Yea And then he went off to ramble, like what
- 7:50he said, we just made king back to me Carnival talking just to name
- 7:57a few, what do he say, got numbers? Hold up, this
- 8:01is a lot of just a lot of ramblers. We got the number one
- 8:05song in the world and number one album in the world with top level beats,
- 8:09top level bars, top level hooks, top level features. I'm the
- 8:13greatest artist in any genre ever, ever, and I'm just getting started.
- 8:20And what do I say about that? What a disappointment. I get it
- 8:28right. Let's just look at jay Z Knis. Jay Z and Nis has
- 8:31said similar things about fans who wanted them to be all Maatic Nas again or
- 8:37Reasonable Doubt check and they both had two great lines that kind of summarized how
- 8:45they felt about that sentiment, right, Nas on Stelmatic saying they thought I'd
- 8:52make another Allmatic, but it's only forward. I'm moving, never back with
- 8:56stupid. Here's another classic c Noteses Fuller from the sky like once he said
- 9:01that, I was like, yep, I don't I don't want Allmatic.
- 9:05I want this guy, this guy who put that line together, and Jay
- 9:13I think it was on Blueprint three said hold on that new ish people like,
- 9:18how come they want my old music, by my old album? He's
- 9:28absolutely one thousand percent right when you like ten albums deep, y'all want that
- 9:33old thing. I know what I do. Anytime I want to feel nostalgic
- 9:37for old jay Z from Reasonable Doubt or any of the Value series or the
- 9:46Blueprint or American Gangster you know or whatever, I just go back and listen.
- 9:52Man, you don't have to keep giving me the same thing over and
- 9:56over, because after a while, I get tired of it now. The
- 10:00counterpoint is we have to like what you're doing now because there is merit in
- 10:07people wanting the old Yay. His music hasn't been as good since maybe in
- 10:16my opinion maybe Jesus. I think that was like the cap, but really
- 10:24because Jesus is something I started to like later, like more recently. I
- 10:28didn't really like it when it came out. But my Beautiful Dog Twisted Fantasy
- 10:33is to me like that back is old. Yeah, And it's something to
- 10:39be said about that old game, right, because again I don't I listened
- 10:43to Volch's one, and I don't think it's a bad album Musically. I
- 10:52think it sounds great. I think the quality that comes with it just shows
- 10:56what kind of a producer he is. I think that part is that part
- 11:01of the old Ya is still there. It may not be the same beats,
- 11:05but that craftsmanship as a producer, it's still there. That demand for
- 11:11quality, it's still there in his music. But what's not there is who
- 11:16he is. Lyrically. I ain't hearing no bars on that album that made
- 11:20me feel like the old YA was back, let alone dope lyrics like you
- 11:28want to talk about oh, yay to me on Watch the Throne. Kanye
- 11:33was better than jay Z. I thought I would never think that, but
- 11:37he was in his bag. That's what people want, Kanye. They want
- 11:43that slick talk. Your slick talk. Now when you're walking around dressed like
- 11:46the monsters, like the Frankenstein, the pops on that joint, and then
- 11:52you talking about you the best rapper when you got a mask on like you're
- 11:54thirty second entrant on the Royal Rumbo. May get out of here, We
- 12:01get out of here. There's nothing you can say. There's no amount of
- 12:03money you can talk about things that I'm gonna just say me. You're gonna
- 12:07talk about things I've never heard of before. I don't care because people have
- 12:15to care to be offended by stuff like that. I don't care how much
- 12:20money you've got. I don't care that. You know you walk your woman
- 12:24around like I don't know what's going on with that. Get back to the
- 12:30music for real, because this ain't it. And you know, maybe I'm
- 12:37a victim of Eric Simon hyping me up. I don't know, but that's
- 12:43how I felt about it. How do you feel you want the oh yeah?
- 12:46Back? Could care less? Given all the things he said. Leave
- 12:50the comments in the comments section below. Oh yeah, well, Eric Simon,
- 12:54Now that's what we're talking about. That's a combination we're talking about because
- 12:58I know every sermon going to be in his usual bad He don't have to
- 13:01be old ever excitement because he never changed really he enhanced. So we'll see.
- 13:09Stove God Cuts has a new single out called Carbone. I think that's
- 13:16how you pronounce it. I'm not going to say pause, because why would
- 13:20you even think that he's working with a dude named Stoop who I'm not that
- 13:26familiar with. I think he did the production of Now. Stove God had
- 13:31released a project I'm not a project, a single I think in January,
- 13:41and that single wasn't that impressive to me? Considering why we like him reasonable
- 13:50drought, I feel comfortable calling it a classic. Yes, already, every
- 13:58time I press play on that project produced by Rock Marciano, I feel like,
- 14:03man, this is Quen's essential boom back. Like, if you want
- 14:09to know what boombap is, obviously there's plenty of examples. This is it
- 14:15beats bars just perfect. And I wasn't the biggest fan in the beginning because
- 14:22I didn't really care for his style that much, but then it kind of
- 14:26wants to be completely honest rock Marciano's beats match with stove Goud Cooks was Chef's
- 14:35kiss perfect. So when I heard this new single in January, after waiting
- 14:41all this time because I know he's with Griselda, waiting all this time for
- 14:45stove Guide project, and I said it in my preview of twenty twenty four,
- 14:50I think this is the year. Wow, I'm gonna say it again,
- 14:52y'all, this is the year we want to finally get what this album
- 14:56means. This single, it's way better than the first one, but is
- 15:05extremely short. It's two minutes and I don't even know if it's a verse
- 15:13and a half. And what makes that so disappointing is his bars are crazy
- 15:20on him. I was listening to the first couple of seconds, I was
- 15:22like, oh, oh, oh, like okay, I think we think
- 15:26we're warming up. I think stove God is warming up. So while the
- 15:33record is short, it is worth checking out because if you had been anticipating
- 15:43a stove God song or album, I should say, and you're tired of
- 15:50hearing them all hooks on everybody else's album and you just don't you just want
- 15:54a Stove God project. I get the method to the madness because they wanted
- 16:00to keep him in the ears and eyes of hip hop heads on like Westside
- 16:06Guns, because like Westside Guns last album, he was on mad songs like
- 16:11and you Know he's on Benny Joined, like he's been on everybody joint.
- 16:15Like they're trying to keep him within the ether of things right, not that
- 16:21either, but trying to keep him busy in the public eye. This isn't
- 16:27the big single, but I think it's definitely a start. The next one
- 16:33gotta be crazy, next one gotta be crazy. This one, the beat
- 16:38is dope. I love the way he's rhyme, and it's just way better
- 16:41than the other singles. That other single doesn't even need to hit the album
- 16:45because I wouldn't miss it. It's not the worst thing in the world,
- 16:48but it was just so like, man whatever, it made me miss Rock
- 16:52Marcian's production. This Carbone song makes me optimistic for the production, because that's
- 17:00the key with Stove guys. He's so different from every other rapper that you
- 17:07can't just give him regular beats. They got to be big, or they
- 17:12got to be the thirtiest boom back beats ever. So he just get loose
- 17:18on that joint. We'll see. Like I said before, I'm optimistic.
- 17:23I think Hip Hop DX also has some bars here. They can't do it
- 17:29like I do. They say they getting money, but they don't look like
- 17:33I do. Oh but they didn't put the real bars here. Okay,
- 17:37well trust me, he got some bars better than that. But we'll see.
- 17:48I don't know. I don't want to jinx it. This is one
- 17:49of my most anticipated albums this year. I didn't know if it would even
- 17:56come out. But we're starting RAMPO. We won't be up here all right.
- 18:03Lastly, same So if you follow this here podcast hip Hop Now podcasts,
- 18:11and you can follow me everywhere on social media at Vegas World, I
- 18:17n C and subscribe to the podcast and audio form wherever you get your podcast,
- 18:22but also YouTube check the video because we are trying to get to five
- 18:26hundred subscribers. We're crawling to four hundred. You know, we like at
- 18:32ninety three, ninety three, you know, seven more people subscribe we have
- 18:37four hundred. That next one hundred should be easy money. But we've been
- 18:44talking about Schoolboy Q. It's been a time. It's been a long time
- 18:48since he's released something, or at least it feels that way, and you
- 18:55know, really tde kind of being quiet because it felt like you had the
- 19:00big Kendrick release and you know, it was like Kendrick and Sisson and it
- 19:07was like, well, where's everybody else? Now? Isaiah Rashad he got
- 19:11a dope new record out that I really like a lot, Like I really
- 19:15like it a lot, But we was waiting on, like where's Schoolboy CUTA
- 19:21like where he at? Like if there was Heads of the Table. You
- 19:26know, everybody's equal, don't get me wrong. App Sola is dope as
- 19:29well, But if it was like Heads of the Table kind of thing,
- 19:34Schoolboy c was like the probably third most important member of the Justice League,
- 19:41you know what I'm saying, Like that's how it feels, not that Justice
- 19:42TD. But and I don't think personally, I don't think he have a
- 19:47whack album. Even the album that people liked the least, I still felt
- 19:52it was good. It just wasn't better than what he had done. So
- 19:56now he releases Blue Lips, which comes in at about an hour fifty eight
- 20:03minutes. I had eighteen tracks, the lead single was What's called YEARN one
- 20:10on one, which I thought was cool. An album features Apps, Soul,
- 20:15Jazi, Child's Major, Freddy Gibbs, we Go Nasty, among others.
- 20:22And my listening experience with this isn't a review. This is more of
- 20:29impressions. But my listening experience is always to listen three times. Right.
- 20:33One is just the initial reactions. Usually sometimes I do that at midnight because
- 20:41I'm up. The second listen is when I'm in the gym, and then
- 20:45the third listen is usually right after that to kind of confirm what I thought
- 20:52on a second listen. And I gotta say, I feel like this is
- 20:56another good album from Schoolboy Cue. I don't feel like it's an instant classic.
- 21:03I don't feel like, oh it's so great. I just feel like
- 21:07it's good. But I gotta give it some time, mainly because I feel
- 21:11like it has a strong start, and then somewhere in the middle I started
- 21:18to lose it, started to lose my attention a little bit. Now,
- 21:22typically let's just take my gym listen. Typically, if I'm engaged in the
- 21:27album while i'm working out, man, I hear everything about it. It
- 21:32don't matter what workout I'm doing. I hear every single word beat, you
- 21:37know, when I come up from a set, I'm looking like, what
- 21:40song was that? Or you know who was on there? Blah blah blah.
- 21:42And with this I had, I found myself trying to bring my attention
- 21:49back to the album. On a third listen, I felt like, Okay,
- 21:57the album is good, but I think it's too long, and me
- 22:03coming from an era where albums sometimes were even longer than that, sounds crazy,
- 22:08but hit me out. I feel like nowadays, not that you have
- 22:14to make shorter albums or shorter songs, but I feel like nowadays you can
- 22:21easily lose someone's attention span because we are so distracted by other things, not
- 22:30even just music, just other things in general, other information in these devices,
- 22:34these phones and stuff that is so easy for you to take your mind,
- 22:41take your ears off, the music, off the lyrics. And I
- 22:45felt like there were times where I was doing that because there were songs that
- 22:48were just kind of like, this song isn't really that good, they could
- 22:55have took it off. I generally feel like, if you cut this album
- 23:00down to fifteen songs, it's great. It's top five of the year.
- 23:04Easy because What stands out to me the most on his Blue Lips album one
- 23:11is the production quality. Y'all gotta give TD some props. Man their album
- 23:18sound, all of them, Sizza, Isaiah Shah, all of them.
- 23:22The album sound excellent, Kendrick. They just sound good. They're just so
- 23:30well thought out with the musical choices and the sounds and the quality of the
- 23:33sounds, like everything and then the rappers is just so polished, Like Schoolboy
- 23:41Q is such a polished free MC that can go straight gangster and make it
- 23:48just as believable as an introspective song or a song where he chooses to use
- 23:55a lot of wordplay. Like That's what I love about what Schoolboy Q does.
- 24:00He just has a knack for being able to wear different hats bars.
- 24:06You know, I was feeding for the gap, Yo, I'm on the
- 24:08row now, but you know what I'm saying, Like he is just so
- 24:17flexible with adapting to the production styles that I think that's what the detriment is,
- 24:25because I think they're just certain tracks. If it don't really fit within
- 24:30the aesthetics of the album, or it's not as I don't know, let's
- 24:37go with good, it's not as good as your strongest records. I think
- 24:41it's okay to shelve those joints and maybe they sound better on a you know,
- 24:48unreleased stole, you know, B sides type of projects somewhere in between
- 24:53your album because I think maybe then it's more digestible because you know, this
- 24:59is what it is within the frame of this project. So with that said,
- 25:07oh, one real quick thing. So, school boy Q has said
- 25:10online that Freddy Gibbs watched him on the song they were on. I don't
- 25:15think so. I thought Freddy gibbs verse was dope, but I thought Schoolboy
- 25:19Q's verse was equally as dope. And they're just two different types of rappers,
- 25:25styles and how they approach music. He even posted about taking this album
- 25:32to jay Z and having him listen to it, having him listen to it,
- 25:36and jay Z saying, Yo, run that back. So you listened
- 25:41to two hours of this, that's what you're saying, because it's one hour
- 25:45to listen to the whole album. And maybe he did. Who else?
- 25:49Maybe he did, But I think jay Z heard what I heard. Just
- 25:55now. I'm gonna say this because I gotta keep saying this because Conway proved
- 26:00me wrong last year. I'm getting to the point where my anticipation for the
- 26:06artists that I really like gets so high that if it isn't met, I'm
- 26:12just kind of like, that's it. And then I continue to listen over
- 26:18time, and then I come back at the end of the year and be
- 26:21like, oh, I love it. I play it all the time.
- 26:22So what do you think? Have you heard Blue Lips by a schoolboy Q
- 26:30or your schoolboy Q fan? Do you like it? How does it compare
- 26:33it to the albums in this catalog? Can you compare it to anything in
- 26:37this catalog? I don't think so. I feel like it's very different than
- 26:42most of the albums we've got from like blank Face and Oxymoron and all of
- 26:48that. But I'm just gonna keep listening because I think it sounds really good.
- 26:55And sometimes you take a break and come back to it, and you
- 26:59know, you you hear an album with different as you hear it more deeply,
- 27:03and it's not forcing yourself to like it. It's not the point.
- 27:07It's maybe I wasn't listening as close. Because there's some garbage rappers that you
- 27:14can you could sit there like a statue and listen to their whole album and
- 27:18have the same conclusion this album's trashed, right, I don't have to do
- 27:22that. If I like, if I like this artist's previous work, I'm
- 27:26always going to give it the benefit of doubt, like Benny the Butcher's album,
- 27:30which I had a similar feel or a similar reaction to it and still
- 27:38kind of play it every day, y'all. So he's one of my he's
- 27:42one of my favorite rappers. So there you have it. Leave your comments
