- 0:02This is an unspoiled network podcast. This is spoil Me, covering One Piece
- 0:12episodes three sixty eight, three sixty nine, Nice, and three seventy,
- 0:18The Silent Assault, the mysterious visitor Tyrant Kuma, Oars plus Maria, the
- 0:25most heinous combination of brains and braun, and the secret plan to turn the
- 0:32Tables Nightmare. Lufy makes his appearance in these episodes. We have got a
- 0:42hollow Oars that's just being fucking piloted like he's some kind of blimp. We've
- 0:49got Lufy, who it turns out, can take shadows in even though he
- 0:53has a soul already, and we have a suppress rising number of ineffective attacks
- 1:02on Oars. I really thought something was gonna work, and so far we
- 1:07haven't got much. Welcome to spoil Me, Welcome to the show everyone.
- 1:30I am Natasha. Thank you very much to the One Piece crew for commissioning
- 1:34this episode. What's up everybody? Thank you all so much for joining me.
- 1:40I just want to say right out of the gate, I am still
- 1:44really really loving this arc. I am still stunned that there are people who
- 1:48do not like it. I genuinely do not know like I there is a
- 1:53bunch of problematic shiit mixed in here. Don't get me wrong, but honestly,
- 1:57the goofiness of it is so over the top, and I just I'm
- 2:02like waiting for a shoe to drop. I'm sort of feeling like, is
- 2:07there something in the end of this arc that makes it so that you retroactively
- 2:12don't like it as much? Because I don't get it? What is wrong
- 2:15with everyone? If you are listening and you're not a fan of this arc,
- 2:21explain yourself, Explain yourself. I want to know, I really do.
- 2:24I'm not even like trying to be confrontational because there's so many other arcs
- 2:29that I feel like have less to offer, and this is just a good
- 2:34time. It's just rollicking. Also, I want to mention for those of
- 2:38you who are into that kind of thing. Gabby commissioned all of the first
- 2:46season of the live action of One Piece, which I believe is coming out
- 2:52in like a month or so. Currently it is June sixth. I think
- 2:57it's coming out in July, and I am not going to be able to
- 3:01begin coverage on it until I think like September. I'll double check that,
- 3:07but it is pretty exciting to me that I'm going to get to cover the
- 3:13live action, because I was already going to resist watching it when it came
- 3:19out on the off chance that somebody would commission it. But there have been
- 3:24a lot of times where I have done that. I've held back because I'm
- 3:28trying to be like available for commission for a certain thing that has gotten a
- 3:32little bit of buzz and people have expressed interest, and then nobody commissions it,
- 3:38and I just sit there not having watched the thing that I would really
- 3:40like to watch. So I'm pretty excited that at this point I am guaranteed,
- 3:49even though when it comes out, I'm still going to have to hold
- 3:52back a little bit, but I'm guaranteed that I'm going to get to watch
- 3:55it, and that makes me really happy. So thank you for that,
- 3:59Gabby. October, my bad. I won't be able to cover it until
- 4:01October. The first day of recording for that will be October twelfth, and
- 4:08I have a lot of pre bookings for other things before that, so the
- 4:12one piece crew tried to prebook, but I am booked well into November at
- 4:15this point. So yeah, I was trying to resist doing that because I
- 4:21recognize that it's sort of me taking a loan against myself when I like accept
- 4:26payment for something so far in advance, but frankly, I need the money
- 4:29so bad lately, and I am I have all the time in the world.
- 4:33I don't see myself stop and doing this anytime soon, So you know,
- 4:38I guess let's just go for it, all right. So the Silent
- 4:44Assault the Mysterious Visitor Tyrant Kuma, by far, of the three, in
- 4:51my opinion, the most boring episode. I think that it's got to do
- 4:57a lot with the fact that Kuma doesn't seem all that interesting. Like initially,
- 5:01I was pretty excited by the fact that he seems a lot less intimidating
- 5:08than I originally thought, and I was sort of hoping that we were going
- 5:13to be able to like get a bit more about him in a personal sense,
- 5:17and we don't really get that. I was waiting for it, you
- 5:21know, the fact that he keeps asking, like, where would you go
- 5:25on a vacation? If you could go anywhere. It's a funny bit,
- 5:29but it's just we're just doing the exact same thing again, And I wanted
- 5:33us to expand the bit a little bit. I said, bit a lot
- 5:42I'm sorry. So anyway, the whole thing with him too, like essentially
- 5:49all he's here for is to deliver the news to Maria that he himself has
- 5:58come to assist in case Maria finds himself unequal to the task of dealing with
- 6:05the straw Hat pirates. And Maria is really really offended, like just genuinely
- 6:15so disgusted that this is how little they estimate he can contribute. And as
- 6:25far as he is concerned, it's sona. You know, I've got his
- 6:30shadow. I put it in what do you call it? I put it
- 6:36in ors? What is it? Number nine hundred? Is that the name
- 6:41of the zombie? And so even though there is still possibility because Lucy's running
- 6:51around that they can purify oars, of course for reasons that I think are
- 6:59pretty obviously just ego, Maria has no consideration for that happening. There is
- 7:04that just it's not it's not I think he would say, it's straight up
- 7:10that it is not possible. This is really weird, you guys. I'm
- 7:15on Funimation and I am on allegedly the episode with Kuma and all of this.
- 7:26I'm running through it and it is playing the like actually the previous episode,
- 7:33and I have adjusted twice and it keeps on playing the previous episode,
- 7:39and I don't know why it's doing that. We're getting a lot of Maybe
- 7:43that's maybe it's just so much flashback that it's looking like it's all the previous
- 7:47episode. But I'm halfway through it and we've got we've got like us up
- 7:56laughing at Oars and getting him to punch himself in the face. I just
- 8:00watched this. This is not here. Their funnimation fucked up there. They
- 8:05something's got its wires crossed. That is a really weird I've never had this
- 8:11happen before. Okay, Well, I mean the whole thing that Kuma is,
- 8:18the fact that he is here just to like basically help out Maria if
- 8:24he's not up for it. I am also a little bit disappointed in that
- 8:28he even says something about how he wasn't like officially sent he has volunteered to
- 8:33do it, which is less an insult from the government, even though Maria
- 8:43is still taking it that way. And I think probably if you were to
- 8:46look into it, it would be like it's not official. I volunteered,
- 8:50but I was like suggested to volunteer through official channels and they just didn't want
- 8:56to make anything too specific. You know. I'm really sorry though, because
- 9:03I want to talk about that scenes and I'm going through it, and because
- 9:07it's playing very clearly the wrong episode, I am unable to like give you
- 9:15guys the blow blah blow of that conversation, which is really weird. I
- 9:20moved on to the second of the two or second of the three, and
- 9:24it's playing the correct one. So I don't know what's going on. But
- 9:30the whole situation with the way accessing this show works, I am telling you
- 9:39guys, I don't know how this is the most like popular anime ever when
- 9:46it is this difficult to get a hold of, Like you know what I'm
- 9:52saying. It just feels like maybe we need a better system here. And
- 10:00I know that the streaming services and everything dealing with like international properties is really
- 10:05really tricky, and I get that dubs and whatnot also make it difficult,
- 10:11but my goodness, this is just too much, Florence says. Kuma also
- 10:18tells Maria about Blackbeard as the new warlord since Crocodile had had taken out Thank
- 10:22you, yes, And we see that fight, which, for the record,
- 10:26and I now know that I was wrong about this, But it's Blackbeard
- 10:33that is fighting Ace in that flashback, right, and we have talked about
- 10:41how it's funny because he doesn't have a beard, but the design of that
- 10:46guy looked so much like Kuma that I thought we were going to find out
- 10:54that Kuma was actually Blackbeard, and that basically Blackbeard is someone who works for
- 11:03the government, the world government, but like Moonlights as this incredibly notorious pirate.
- 11:09I thought we were just going to get a little bit of like secret
- 11:11identity shit, and it just turns out that their character designs are just really
- 11:16really similar. Just they've got those like square jaws and the long curly black
- 11:20hair, really like wide builds, and they look so similar and I was
- 11:26like, oh shit, but no, that was not what it was at
- 11:30all. We also have this whole like bit with Lufy who thinks that he
- 11:37is chasing Maria at the end of the previous section. He finds out that
- 11:41he was actually chasing Maria's shadow the whole time, which is super embarrassing for
- 11:48him, and he is infuriated in this section and starts like, kind of
- 11:56Lufy is really I think that it's remarkable how much. I can still enjoy
- 12:05Lufy when a lot of the time the parts of the story that he is
- 12:09given are the most boring parts because you've got to find a reason to keep
- 12:16him out of the fight. Like he is so overpowered that if he were
- 12:24to get involved directly right away most of the time, then it's just gonna
- 12:28be game over. So they have to sideline him and do weird shit to
- 12:33make it so that he can't participate. And that results in Lufy being in
- 12:41like unintentionally a boring character. And it's not like he isn't a boring character.
- 12:50You know, he's fun, but it feels like he so rarely gets
- 12:56to really like stretch himself. Oh my god, I'm sorry. I didn't
- 13:01mean to do that. I wasn't on purpose, but I'm gonna go with
- 13:05it. I'm gonna say it. It's just a lot of the time when
- 13:13we cut back to Lufy, I have to mentally prepare myself to be not
- 13:18only kind of bored, but also frustrated because usually it's him attempting to correct
- 13:24or get out of whatever situation he's in, and for whatever reason in that
- 13:28plot, it does not work. And I know that it's not going to
- 13:31work because we're too early in the ark, so I just have to like
- 13:35sort of bear it and get through. And I don't like having that reaction
- 13:43to him. I wish that there were other ways to do this, and
- 13:46I don't really have a better idea. I understand the necessity of it plot
- 13:52wise. I understand that, you know, we can't just have him like
- 13:58man, we can't always have just magical power ups for him, although we
- 14:03have been pretty consistently doing that. I just I really enjoy how everybody else
- 14:13gets their fights and their little moments where they show off and also get to
- 14:20be with the rest of the crew and contribute in a group setting, because
- 14:26there's something unifying about everybody getting to like show off what they are in particular
- 14:30are good at and work as a team. In this section especially, we
- 14:35have a bit where Chopper, you know, he sends Zoro flying, and
- 14:41Zoro chops up a building and Sangi kicks the building into Oars. Now does
- 14:46it work. No, it does not. It does not work because Oars
- 14:50is a fucking monster, literally, But I thought it was really fun to
- 14:56watch the three of them come up with a plan that utilized each of their
- 15:01skills, and I think that's what's sort of missing with Lufy is that it's
- 15:09weird with him being the captain and being the person who is so he's the
- 15:16lynchpin, you know, He's the one that everybody sort of circles around.
- 15:22It's funny how little he actually gets to fight side by side with his own
- 15:28crew because of the fact that he is just too much. So I'm gonna
- 15:35jump since that is playing the wrong episode for sure, I'm gonna jump into
- 15:39three sixty nine Nice or Is plus Moria. And this I found pretty fun
- 15:45actually because what you know, I've mentioned how strange I found the like commer
- 15:56bund sort of area on oars, and it turns out that actually has a
- 16:03really specific function that I kind of This has made me retroactively wish that we
- 16:11got like more practical functions for all of the weird things in the costumes we've
- 16:15seen, because god knows, there's been a lot of weird fucking costumes.
- 16:19So if we were able to go back and be like, Okay, I
- 16:22know that this like lapel is shaped really weird and is very very wide,
- 16:29but guess what the lapel is also a knife, I would kind of enjoy
- 16:33that, like going step by step through some of the weirdest costumes of the
- 16:37show and just assigning like secret weapons or functions to things that definitely that's not
- 16:45cannon, but you're just deciding I'm going to make every part of this costume
- 16:49count and be useful in some way. So yeah, or is his middle
- 16:56which like, it's just open, It's just open like a tent on the
- 17:06inside is what I kept thinking of, like a circus tent, And I
- 17:10kept having to stop and be like, how would that work? And then
- 17:11remind myself that he's a zombie. And if I can accept that they just
- 17:18stuck a shadow in a zombie, why can't I just accept that that zombie
- 17:22has a hollow insides? Because it doesn't matter, it's not none of this
- 17:26is anything. It's fine. So Maria, in response basically to the insult
- 17:33of Kuma being here trying to tell him what's what, has decided that he
- 17:40is going to take matters into his own hands, and he is going to
- 17:45go down and serve as the brains of the operation. So he's inside ors
- 17:52giving him instructions on what to do. And there are times where it's genuinely
- 18:00really funny. There's like interesting stuff too. At one point, or Is
- 18:06gets lit on fire, and this is I think due to OO stop using
- 18:08like a some kind of exploding star thing, and ors is like patting,
- 18:18like kind of jumping in place, and he's panicking over the fact that the
- 18:22fire hurts, and Maria has to be like, hey, Bud, I
- 18:27think you'll find if you tune in for a second, it doesn't hurt.
- 18:33You just expect it to hurt because of the memories you have of fire hurting,
- 18:38and so it's in your head that you are feeling pain. But if
- 18:42you really stop and think about it, you don't feel any pain at all.
- 18:48And Lufy stops and realizes he's right and says something like, man,
- 18:53I look silly. You know what, guys, I think that I just
- 19:00have a real soft spot for the words silly, and I need to use
- 19:04the word silly more because fucking cars on the table. I use the words
- 19:11stupid and idiotic and you know whatnot And in truth, those all have pretty
- 19:18abless roots. Right now, the meaning of the words, I feel like
- 19:25has changed so much that there's a big part of me that is resistant to
- 19:29just being like cutting them out of my vocabulary because I feel like it doesn't
- 19:33really mean that anymore, but in some ways it does still, you know,
- 19:40So I'm trying to like edge my way toward being better and using words
- 19:47like wild instead of crazy, for example, small change. I really want
- 19:53to start incorporating silly because what I like about it is that it gets across
- 20:00the fact that something is sort of nonsensical, but it does so in a
- 20:06way that feels a little bit patronizing, like and sometimes that's what you want
- 20:15to be doing. The point of saying, well, that's stupid is to
- 20:22really like get it across that if you think this thing, then you are
- 20:29a gullible fool. And I feel like silly really does that. It nails
- 20:34like not only the fact that this does not make any sense, but that
- 20:38the person saying it is probably a bit of a goof. And I really
- 20:45appreciate any time that I see it used in the wild now days, and
- 20:49I want to incorporate it more. And and the fact that Rufie's zombie says
- 20:56it here and the way he's just like reallyish that cracked me up. And
- 21:03then a little bit later when Frankie gets tossed because yo Frankie gets tossed tossed
- 21:10like that was that was rough. They're all just sort of standing around looking
- 21:17at Frankie as he's landing, and Maria says to Oars, it looks like
- 21:22he's still alive. Go step on him, I think, is what he
- 21:26says, and uh, lufy, well lufy not lufy. Oars says,
- 21:34okay, and I really enjoyed that too. I don't know if this is
- 21:41hinting that Oars isn't really here for this, or if it's just meant to
- 21:48be that he is not enjoying being ordered around, you know, maybe feeling
- 21:55a little bit lazy and is like, okay, I got him now one
- 21:57and he's like, well you didn't really get him, and or it is
- 22:00just being like, oh my god, fine, I'll go do it.
- 22:04Nah. You know, I think it's probably that one, but I was
- 22:08sort of hoping that maybe it would turn out, and I've been hoping this
- 22:15the whole time, as you guys know, that there would come a point
- 22:18where like one of the zombies basically goes, you know what, fuck all
- 22:22of this, I'm out. And it would be pretty fun if Or's got
- 22:27ordered around so much that he just kind of decided that he was on strike,
- 22:33and it's just like, nah, man, you know what, I
- 22:36Am not interested in taking your fucking orders anymore. But it depends on how
- 22:42much of Lufy's personality is left in there, and you know, as time
- 22:47goes on, as we have seen, his personality begins to fall away.
- 22:52So I even if it were happening, I don't know how much that's going
- 22:57to be able to like develop, because the whole way the timing works is
- 23:04working against it. So anyway, I'm kind of jumping all over the place.
- 23:11But nevertheless, I just really wanted to talk about some of that stuff
- 23:15off the top. And we have Lufy who has been left in a patch
- 23:26of woods because he was following Maria's shadow, and eventually the shadow just ditches
- 23:33him, which I was genuinely surprised by. It just flies back to the
- 23:38castle and Lufy is yelling after it for it to tell him where he is
- 23:47because he's lost. But the thing is, guys, he's yelling that at
- 23:52the shadow that is clearly flying toward the castle, which is in clear view,
- 24:00and I'm not sure if it's just supposed to be that from where he
- 24:04is, Lufy can't see the castle, and it's just us as viewers that
- 24:08can see it because of the angle we're watching. But it really seems to
- 24:14me like Lufy should be able to see it. So I got confused about
- 24:18the fact that he's allegedly lost when he's got a pretty decent landmark right there
- 24:26that should aid him in a big way. And Lufy is standing there and
- 24:33it is just like, well, I have a you know, I gotta
- 24:37get this done before morning. You're leaving me here. This is screwing me.
- 24:41And then he stops and asks himself, why do we need to get
- 24:45this done before morning? Again, he's like completely lost the thread, and
- 24:49when he remembers, he begins to seriously panic and finally goes, I guess
- 24:56I better just follow Maria's shadow and hope it going the right way. And
- 25:00I was like, thank you, yeah, because it seems like that's pretty
- 25:07clear if Maria's intent was to ditch Lofy, it just felt like a really
- 25:15half asked way of doing it. I also have the question, you guys,
- 25:19because you know, the whole thing with the shadows being taken, if
- 25:26they are forcibly taken, they contain the personality and the skills, at least
- 25:33temporarily the personality of the person that's taken from. And I am really curious
- 25:41how much Maria's shadow is under Maria's control, and not to say like the
- 25:51Shadow is just going to become a free agent and do its own thing,
- 25:56But can it be controlled by Maria from afar or is it working totally independently
- 26:04and everything it does will come as a surprise when Maria hears about it later
- 26:11or is he like kind of aware of what it's doing and what's happening with
- 26:15it, because it's I'm just sort of thinking of it in terms of it
- 26:21being an entirely separate entity like a henchman, and that's not really what it
- 26:26is. So I'm not sure if it functions like a second set of eyes
- 26:32or if it really is sort of meant to be a whole separate being.
- 26:37And if it's a whole separate being, like that sort of changes things up
- 26:41as well, because I mean, the fact that Maria has this shadow that
- 26:45can fight for him to begin with is pretty big. Like this is also
- 26:51for those who are reading the Cradle series, and I'm starting coverage of the
- 26:56final book in the series today and I'm so excited. I have mentioned a
- 27:02lot throughout covering One Piece. How Will White, the writer of that series,
- 27:07is a massive One Piece fan, and there are so many places where
- 27:11I can see the influence. I can see the ideas that inspired different parts
- 27:18of Cradle, and this whole thing with the Shadow one hundred percent is reminding
- 27:26me of the concept of blood shadows. And for those who are not aware
- 27:30of what that is, I am not going to tell you because it's a
- 27:33tiny kind of a spoiler, and also it's a lot more effective to read
- 27:38than it is for me to tell you, So go read the books.
- 27:41But yeah, having this sort of separate entity that is and isn't you is
- 27:48It's just I really want to know how this works because Maria sort of just
- 27:55it feels like all he does is open the door to let the Shadow go
- 27:59do it, and after that doesn't really concern himself with what it's doing or
- 28:03even think about whether it will fail. There's no there's no fear from him
- 28:11or feeling of stakes like can his shadow be killed? I have to assume
- 28:18no, right, like or is it possible for another shadow to fight it?
- 28:26We know that the shadows are pretty much on a one way path back
- 28:30to their owner when they're just floating around in the air. But I guess
- 28:37the thing is that Maria is the only one who has this ability, right,
- 28:41everybody else's shadow just functions normally, and Maria is the only one who
- 28:47can make his operate independently. And maybe if somebody else had this power,
- 28:55but I have to assume there's no killing his shadow because there aren't other shadows
- 29:00that are interested in attacking without having a body to live in first. Anyway,
- 29:11I'm sorry, I'm just thinking out loud about like the implications of this.
- 29:15So there's a couple of different things here that are sort of interesting about
- 29:19what's going on with the whole crew. We've got Zoro, who is going
- 29:25forward to meet Oars and is like using this new sword. I think he
- 29:30calls it a black blade at one point, but apparently the weight of it
- 29:37is really different from what he is used to, so when he's using it
- 29:42at first, it isn't responding the way he expects and it's a little bit
- 29:48more difficult, like it's slower, is the way that he describes it.
- 29:55And he decides that he is just going to go into this fight against oars
- 30:00by himself and not like ask for backup from his friends and not have any
- 30:08particular plan. So all of his friends are sort of screaming for him to
- 30:15fucking turn around and come back, but he is extremely wrapped up in his
- 30:22brand new toy that he wants to try out, and he uses like a
- 30:27technique that he has used before, which has way way more power than it
- 30:34normally does, and he's realizing that the strike from this technique has been kind
- 30:44of what's the word I want? It's like the blade gathered all three sword
- 30:49strikes together and like condensed it into this one extremely powerful. It's what I
- 30:56kept thinking when I was imagining the way this would work him in my head
- 31:03was taking the power of like three punches and putting them together into that sort
- 31:11of like really tight finger punch where it's like a finger pistol idea actually,
- 31:18where it's one really concentrated area, but the hit is so much harder because
- 31:23all of that power is concentrated that way. So he is pretty excited about
- 31:33the change in power, but also recognizing that the fact that it is a
- 31:37more difficult blade to handle is going to require some practice, and he actually
- 31:44thanks the samurais just sort of like, you really gave me one hell of
- 31:48a sword here, and or says something about how Zoro could have put his
- 31:56eye out, which I find genuinely funny, and says I'm going to grind
- 32:02you down to goo and begins chasing Zoro. All of his friends have been
- 32:07sort of like watching from the edges of this courtyard, I suppose, And
- 32:15as the as Zoro's like backing up from Oars, Oars is approaching the rest
- 32:22of the crew and they're all starting to get a little bit nervous about this
- 32:24situation. And finally Zoro strikes again, because it's a lot of him just
- 32:31dodging, you know, running away, and he does one strike that gets
- 32:38Oars dropped on his side, and I was thinking that he had, like,
- 32:45I don't know, suffered Achilles ten in or something really crucial. It
- 32:51turns out Oars is able to get right back up again. And this is
- 32:54what I mean in the opening when I said, like, everybody is throwing
- 33:00attacks at Oars and nothing is really doing anything. I kept waiting for something
- 33:08to turn out to be the magic bullet. And you have a moment right
- 33:15after each attack where you're feeling like that really did something, and you're waiting
- 33:22for the evidence. You're waiting for it to hit Oars or for Oars to
- 33:27react, and then he just doesn't in the way that you expect. So
- 33:31in this one, he just stands right back up again. I thought Zoro
- 33:36had dealt him a pretty vicious blow and he just shook it off. And
- 33:43this is the same thing like with the fire, which turns out to really
- 33:45not be a thing. And they're the buildings, like when they get the
- 33:52chunks of the building flying and Sangi is kicking them across. All Oars has
- 33:58to do is basically like punch them back at them, which is really unfortunate
- 34:07that he is even able to do that. I mean, that just seems
- 34:10kind of unfair. But yeah, so everything that he is attempting isn't everything
- 34:19they are attempting. I'm saying he because because I'm talking about Zoro at the
- 34:22moment, but all of them is. It's all shaping up in these like
- 34:28big dramatic moments of initiation. You know, like when USAP in the third
- 34:38of these episodes, USAP has that like giant sort of slingshot thing. He
- 34:45calls it again like King's stag beetle or something. I can't remember what he
- 34:50calls it, but I found the name really weird and it rang a bell,
- 34:52and I'm pretty sure I found it weird the other time too. But
- 34:55the whole way that this works is essentially it's a catapult to send Frankie flying
- 35:02towards oars up towards like face level, and he hasn't had a chance to
- 35:09test it, so he doesn't know if it's going to work. And I
- 35:13sort of thought maybe what we were going to get was the catapult just not
- 35:16really working the right way. This giant slingshot. I guess a catapult is
- 35:21technically a different thing. But we, like I said, we have this
- 35:25big build up. You know, he's holding it in place and straining against
- 35:30it, and Frankie walks up and they have a talk about, you know,
- 35:34whether it's going to work. It's a whole thing, and then Frankie
- 35:37gets launched across and by the way, instead of just shooting forward like head
- 35:40first, the way that most of us would if we were attempting to become
- 35:45more streamlined for you know, air flight, Frankie decides he's going to sit
- 35:52cross, lean like he's doing a meditation or something. And I don't know
- 35:58why, but that shit was so there was something so funny about it.
- 36:04You know, I don't know why that got me, but yeah, all
- 36:08this build up, Frankie's flying across, he's really feeling himself. He assures
- 36:14usap like, you know, count on me, kid, I've got this,
- 36:17and then Or just just fucking picks him out of the air and like
- 36:23chucks him and Frankie goes down like really hard. And this is what I
- 36:31mean, is I felt like and this is I would say, a good
- 36:37thing. It's just disorienting when you have these big moments where a weapon or
- 36:45a technique is getting a special kind of focus and there's a lot of build
- 36:52up to it, and a lot of like, oh, well this has
- 36:57not been out of testing yet, or I haven't a chance to try this
- 37:00yet. What I traditionally expect is usually like, oh, it's the solution.
- 37:13Once we do it, either for comedic effect, it's going to completely
- 37:16fail in a really spectacular way, or it's going to turn out that we
- 37:22like stumbled across the solution to our problem here. And with all of these
- 37:30that's not really the case. Our friends are like trying things out, and
- 37:35it's a momentous moment for them to be attempting what they're doing, and to
- 37:42a degree they are getting feedback from the experimenting that they're on the right track.
- 37:47Like Zoro with his new technique and the blade and everything, he is
- 37:52unsuccessful at trying to take ors down with it, but it's clear he is
- 37:58headed towards a more powerful version of what he's been doing so far, and
- 38:04this is something that he can utilize in the future. But we don't get
- 38:09a victory out of it. We get lots of little like it will be
- 38:15a victory as long as everybody lives through this, you know, and I
- 38:20know they will because they just will. But I enjoyed, I would say,
- 38:25actually, the fact that I kept getting tricked into thinking, oh,
- 38:30okay, here it is, this is the thing that's going to do it,
- 38:34and it just never was. It just always failed. And it doesn't
- 38:38even just like almost work and then fails for technical reasons. Everything fails pretty
- 38:47spectacularly. Like Zoro's attacks just really don't do shit. Frankie flying at his
- 38:55face, I mean, Frankie does nothing but sort of inconvenience or for a
- 39:00few minutes because there's all this like dust kicked up I think, or maybe
- 39:05that was a zoro and like Sanji kicking the buildings towards them. There's no
- 39:09moment where Oars is like, oh no, he just shoots that ship right
- 39:15back and makes all of our friends evacuate the area in a panic, basically
- 39:21like to a point where Brooke, who is back with his giant bag of
- 39:25salt by the way, he like collapses in a bit of a panic and
- 39:30Robin has to save him with her hand magic. That sounds really filthy.
- 39:38I will never say it like that again, but yeah, I just really
- 39:45the fact that I kept thinking, oh, okay, here's a thing I
- 39:50should know. Of course, none of this is going to be the thing
- 39:54because Lufy is ultimately the one that's going to have to fight Oars. That's
- 39:59just the deal. That's how this is. This is where we're heading,
- 40:02like clearly, but I wasn't considering the greater arc or you know, even
- 40:08if it weren't that they took him down, I was thinking they would make
- 40:13a significant dent in him, and they do not. It doesn't seem like
- 40:19Oors is at all worse for the wear by the time they're done attempting all
- 40:25of these different methods. So because I'm a Dodo and I wasn't really thinking
- 40:32things through, I was caught off guard. But I also enjoy that because
- 40:38none of them worked. First of all, there's the element of surprise for
- 40:40me of getting to watch them fail so badly. And of course you get
- 40:45the build up of the fact that this guy is so tough that all of
- 40:50these incredibly powerful and intense attacks don't work. So when Lufy comes through and
- 40:57he starts fighting, it's going to be a lot clearer to us as an
- 41:02audience exactly what he's up against and how hard he's going to have to go
- 41:07to get this dude at all on the back foot, you know. And
- 41:14we also have the appearance of Nami again, which very predictably Sanji does not
- 41:21handle super well. She's yelling at him for not saving her, and he
- 41:29is just so delighted to be yelled at, which makes sense. Sanji definitely
- 41:34feels like a sub to me, and he would just delight in it.
- 41:37He would have such a good time. And then you guys, then we
- 41:45get something that I didn't expect and that I'm really mad about. So or
- 41:52is this standing there and looking at Nami and we're gearing up for him to
- 41:58punch in her direction, and he's saying gum gum as he's like revving up,
- 42:04so to speak. And I'm thinking to myself, he keeps saying gumgum
- 42:07even though the stretching never works. I guess it's just force of habit,
- 42:14you know, we know it doesn't actually work. And then he does manage
- 42:22to stretch after all, And I am extremely concerned because I didn't think this
- 42:30was possible, and I felt like the show and I were both on the
- 42:32same wavelength in terms of how the Devil Fruit powers work and that we had
- 42:39both agreed that that is the sort of thing that is like affecting a live
- 42:45body and causing some changes, and that it would likely not work out the
- 42:50same way on a dead one. So I felt we were on the same
- 42:55page and I was good with it. And now we're changing up the script
- 43:01and we are throwing it out there that actually this can be done by oars
- 43:08as well, And my question is what changed? Why can he do it
- 43:14now? And if he gets the ability, does this mean that Lufy is
- 43:21going to lose it? Temporarily because he you know, only one person at
- 43:28a time can have the ability. Does his shadow count as a second person?
- 43:32And would that remove it from Lufy? Is this you know, like,
- 43:38oh, sort of? There can only be one situation, and since
- 43:44his shadow is in another being right now, it isn't just considered a second
- 43:50whole person, because granted, we get some stuff happening later that I think
- 43:57is going to result in Lufy powering up in such a way that not having
- 44:01his devil Fruit powers wouldn't be the end of the world. I just don't
- 44:07like the idea that this is that taking a devil fruit power via a shadow
- 44:15is a possibility, and I don't like the idea that it is something that
- 44:22would sink in slowly and sort of like, even if you left the person
- 44:28alive who shadow you took, they're going to start walking around without even their
- 44:34devil Fruit powers anymore. It's bad enough to not be able to come out
- 44:37into the sunlight. It's also very bad to have had a superpower and then
- 44:45get it taken away from you after you've gotten used to having it for however
- 44:50long. So I'm just if it does turn out that only one of them
- 44:54can have it at a time. I'm really curious what Lufy's re action is
- 45:00going to be if he attempts to use gum gum anything and it doesn't work,
- 45:07and also what his reaction is going to be when he sees that Oars
- 45:12can use it. There's a part of me here because you know, I've
- 45:17said that I want to see each of our guys face down with the shadow
- 45:22of themselves and fight because that's just fun, Like how can that not be
- 45:28fun? But there's a part of me that wants Lufy to go up to
- 45:35Oars and like we would be watching expecting a fight, and then it turns
- 45:42out that they both have the exact same priorities and are so easygoing and chummy
- 45:49right away that they become friends and don't have to fight, and Loria is
- 45:52just sort of elbowed out of the way because Oors likes Lufy better. That
- 45:59is, I would enjoy that. I'm just gonna say, do I think
- 46:04that's like great writing? No? But I also it would be fun.
- 46:08There is something about or As being part loofy that you just don't really want
- 46:15him to get his ass completely handed to him, you know what I'm saying,
- 46:21Like I still have a feeling like that's loofy there and he is just
- 46:27doing what he is told and doesn't really get what's happening to him. And
- 46:31I for one, don't feel that he deserves to be put down exactly purified.
- 46:37Fine, but we'll see about that. And like Brooks showing up with
- 46:43this giant bag of salt, I was really hoping that what we were going
- 46:47to get was the sling shot that USAP uses with Frankie, that we were
- 46:53going to have that set up and reloaded, but loaded with the bag full
- 46:58of salt. And I am assuming in the end that is still going to
- 47:04be the way we wind up purifying him. I don't see it being that
- 47:07somebody drags up a bag of salt that size behind them as they like climb
- 47:14this creature. I have to assume either it's getting like dropped in when somebody
- 47:21jumps past like above or from a window in one of the buildings, or
- 47:27something like this the sling shot. So I guess we just have to sort
- 47:32of wait to see that. And what I am going to predict is going
- 47:37to happen is that Lufy is going to engage Oars in a fight and be
- 47:44instructed to sort of like turn oars in a certain direction or get him to
- 47:49open his mouth at a certain point or whatever, and then they will use
- 47:54the sling shot. And it's going to have required that Lufy be there to
- 47:59adequately stract Ores. So that I just want to say to you, I'm
- 48:04not totally sure how much Ores understands the danger of the salt. I think
- 48:08he gets it for the most part. But he had been about to eat
- 48:13that salted fish and they tell him like, dude, or is this your
- 48:16first day? You can't eat that? And you know, we know therefore
- 48:22that he has been given the actual information, but being told a thing and
- 48:28keeping it in mind afterwards that is not the same thing. And the latter
- 48:34is not one of Lufy's particular strong points. Let's just say he can be
- 48:37told things and he will lose it like a minute and a half later as
- 48:43if you never said it to him, because he has adhd will all we
- 48:47are all in agreement right like just one. So does Ores have the presence
- 48:54of mind if they were to just put a giant batch of salted fish next
- 49:00to him to not eat it? And we know Maria is in the mix
- 49:02now, so Maria might just be yelling at him, like, don't do
- 49:06it. Will that sink in, though, because this dude is very food
- 49:10obsessed, and I have to wonder whether the orders of his master are going
- 49:16to succeed in superseding the drive he has to consume and eat as much as
- 49:23he can. Well, I guess we'll have to wait and see. But
- 49:30we have this big bag of salt. I love it, and I want
- 49:34to see what happens with that. But I am also sort of like,
- 49:37I don't feel like you even need to worry about that. Guys. You
- 49:38could just get some salted food, just, you know, get a box
- 49:43of McDonald's fries. And so saunter on up done, which brings me to
- 49:49talking about the whole thing with the shadows in the woods. So Lucy gets
- 49:57stopped by a bunch of the guys who are wandering around without their shadows,
- 50:01and they have a woman with them. I think they call her Peggy the
- 50:07Proposer or Polly the Proposer some of the pay because apparently she just proposes to
- 50:14like every man she meets. And they tell him that when shadows go out,
- 50:23like when somebody gets purified. One of the zombies and the shadow comes
- 50:28out of their mouths and begins to fly back toward its owner. You could
- 50:34just grab the shadow out of the air with your bare hands, just snatch
- 50:39you out of the air and keep it for a while. And I my
- 50:45jaw dropped, You know that? Like what? That the idea that they
- 50:52are corporeal in that way. And granted we have been seeing Lufie literally fight
- 50:59a shadow, but that's Maria's shadow. That's like a special circumstance. I
- 51:04thought. I didn't think that they were substantial enough to touch when they're coming
- 51:09out of a body. And so these dudes have just stored up a fucking
- 51:16hundred and change of these shadows, which I just for the record, want
- 51:22to say. The fact that they're all doing this so they can get their
- 51:28shadows back, but also preventing people from getting their shadows back because they're just
- 51:31gathering them and holding onto them and hoarding them. I feel like that's not
- 51:37really great ethics, guys, but we'll set that aside. So they tell
- 51:45Lufy even though you are alive and you have a soul in you, you
- 51:53can still get a shadow put in you and take on the abilities of that
- 51:59person. And I again was like, oh my god. So they test
- 52:06it out by giving him the shadow of a swordsman, and I don't know
- 52:10who specifically it was, but he says in response to like, can you
- 52:17use a sword? He says no, and they hand him one and he
- 52:22does like a couple of really wild tricks with it, and everybody's like ha
- 52:28ha, and Lufy is dumbfound and it's just like wait what And it turns
- 52:35out now he can sword fight because of that shadow. He also has really
- 52:39heavy black liner under his eyes to signal that the shadow is within him.
- 52:45Right, that's like the sort of visual what's the word I want, not
- 52:53just clue, but like language. I guess communication. And I'm thinking,
- 53:02like, okay, that's cool having that extra ability. And it turns out
- 53:07they're basically like, you can take as many shadows as you can handle.
- 53:14So they hold Loofy in place, who yells to protest because it's pretty disorienting.
- 53:20It turns out to have a shadow put into you, and he's like,
- 53:23I didn't agree to this, and without his consent, just begin to
- 53:28bile shadows into his body really really quickly, and we cut away as they're
- 53:36doing this, and he's protesting, but then when we come back, he
- 53:39has succeeded in taking in a hundred of them, and everybody is just like,
- 53:45I have literally never seen anybody able to do anything remotely like this.
- 53:50Your willpower must be insane. And again just mentioning cradle here just just a
- 53:58thing with the willpower hour and the absorbing of you know, just saying so
- 54:07also you know, talking about like the visual language of the fact that he
- 54:13has the shadow being the under eyeliner. Once he takes in all these shadows,
- 54:20Lufy is jacked all to hell, Like he is looking a lot like
- 54:24Frankie to be honest. He has got the extremely big forearms and the like
- 54:32triangle like Derito shape body and is acting a little bizarre. Everybody is sort
- 54:43of like, is he okay? Because he hasn't passed out, and because
- 54:50of that and the fact that the shadows are staying in him, they are
- 54:53counting that as a win. But he just doesn't seem like himself, and
- 55:00they ask like, are you're right, Bud, and he's like, oh
- 55:05yeah, but you know that reassurance doesn't really feel like reassurance. So I
- 55:14was pretty psyched until they tell Lufy the fucking caveat here. The catch which
- 55:24is he can only hold these shadows within himself for ten minutes because he has
- 55:31a soul already, And you know, I am the way I sort of
- 55:36imagine it. The souls fits into a slot in your body, and there's
- 55:42something in that slot already. So all these shadows are going to be bouncing
- 55:45around trying to find a place that they fit, and they won't find it.
- 55:52Eventually, the body is going to reject them, and they are going
- 55:57to pop back out again and go back to their owner. Now, what
- 56:04I want to know is if it's possible to grab them out of the air
- 56:07and just stuff them right back in and basically do this indefinitely, because if
- 56:15you can grab them with your bare hands, I'll see why not, you
- 56:19know, I think what it really the question for me is how debilitating is
- 56:24it when the shadows leave you? Because if it's just like they just fly
- 56:30out of you and now you lose that ability, that's not too bad.
- 56:34But if it's sort of a reverse of whatever he feels when they go into
- 56:37him, then the shadows leaving may kind of lay him the fuck out and
- 56:43make him useless for a minute or two, and that wouldn't be so terrible
- 56:50if it was just the one shadow, but because he's got so many in
- 56:53him, if that happens, he's going to be completely vulnerable. So that's
- 56:59the thing that I'm really curious about. Is like the fact that it's they
- 57:04can only be held for ten minutes blows it really does. It sucks.
- 57:08I hate that, But I want to know what it looks like when they
- 57:13just leave, you know, because I feel like, if it's not terrible,
- 57:20he could just grab it and take it back and do it again.
- 57:23So yeah, So then the episode ends. I got so psyched up about
- 57:29it, and then it ends with him just like walking away and feeling himself
- 57:35because he is so he is so enormous and has all I have to imagine
- 57:47probably has like I don't want to say, voices in his head because I'm
- 57:52not sure that's exactly how this manifests, but it's probably a lot of conflicting
- 57:55information that is bouncing around inside his head. So I'm really curious. Even
- 58:02though he has gotten physically bigger, obviously he is nothing in comparison to Oars.
- 58:08I said that he looks a lot more like Frankie and that's true,
- 58:12and you guys have seen what Frankie looks like standing next to Oars. It's
- 58:15nothing. So what kind of abilities will Will? Oh my god, you
- 58:22guys, I'm already on cradle brain. Holy shit, Will Lufy? What
- 58:28is he going to pull out? What's he got in his pocket? I'm
- 58:30really interested to see what kind of ability is going to be useful against Oars
- 58:36when we've got a lot of pretty talented fighters here making no difference. You
- 58:39know, all of their attacks have no effect. So all right, well
- 58:45I'm going to wrap up, but thank you guys so much for hanging out
- 58:49with me. Appreciate you all. Sorry about the like weird confusion with Funimation.
- 58:52I don't know what's going on there. I watched the episodes from here
- 58:54and it was fine, but then going back and trying to rewatch them it's
- 58:59given me problem. So but um, I think I was able to cover
- 59:01pretty much everything. If I missed anything, let me know And until next
- 59:07time to loom Motherfucker's That was an Unspoiled Network podcast
