- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Monday, it's the start of a
- 0:15new week. It's the 16th of June and it's
- 0:18so good to have your company as we in the midst of this busy
- 0:23life of ours. Stop, take a moment and continue
- 0:28this expose on what it looks like to actually place God above
- 0:33all other things in our life. And so that is well, today,
- 0:36tomorrow, and the next day we will continue with the theme of
- 0:39really unpacking, as Moses does for his people, the very first
- 0:43commandment that God gave him on that mountaintop so that you and
- 0:47I can can reflect and think, how does this look in my life?
- 0:51Today we're going to be talking about the golden calves they
- 0:55created out of gold at the base of the mountain.
- 0:57And you and I may not make golden calves, but boy, there
- 1:00will be parallels in our life. So, Holy Spirit, come convict us
- 1:05of your truth in your way as we unpack your word.
- 1:10You ready, friends? Oh yeah, let's do it.
- 1:13Let's read together Deuteronomy Chapter 9.
- 1:26Listen, no Israel, today you are about to cross the Jordan River
- 1:31to take over the land belonging to nations much greater and more
- 1:35powerful than you. They live in cities with walls
- 1:38that reach the sky. A people are strong and tall,
- 1:43descendants of the famous Anakite giants.
- 1:46You've heard the saying who can stand up to the Anakites, but
- 1:50recognised today that the Lord your God is the one who will
- 1:54cross over ahead of you like a devouring fire to destroy them.
- 1:58He will subdue them so that you will quickly conquer them and
- 2:02drive them out, just as the Lord has promised.
- 2:05After the Lord your God has done this for you.
- 2:08Don't say in your hearts the Lord has given us this land
- 2:11because we are such good people. No, it is because of the
- 2:16wickedness of the other nations that He is pushing them out of
- 2:18the way. It is not because you are good
- 2:21or have such integrity that you're about to occupy their
- 2:24land. The Lord your God will drive
- 2:27these nations out ahead of you only because of their
- 2:31wickedness. And to fulfil the oath He swore
- 2:34to your ancestors, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, you must
- 2:38recognise that the Lord your God is not giving you this good land
- 2:42because you are good, for you are not.
- 2:45You are a stubborn people, remember and never forget how
- 2:49angry you made the Lord your God out in the wilderness.
- 2:52From the day you left Egypt until now, you have been
- 2:55constantly rebelling against him.
- 2:58Even at Mount Sinai you made the Lord so angry he was ready to
- 3:02destroy you. This happened when I was on the
- 3:05mountain receiving the tablets of stone inscribed with the
- 3:09words of the covenant that the Lord had made with you.
- 3:12I was there for 40 days and 40 nights, and all that time I ate
- 3:16no food and drank no water. The Lord gave me the 2 tablets
- 3:21on which God had written with His own finger all the words He
- 3:25had spoken to you from the heart of the fire when you were
- 3:29assembled at the mountain. At the end of the 40 days and
- 3:33nights, the Lord handed me the 2 stone tablets inscribed with the
- 3:37words of the covenant. Then the Lord said to me, Get
- 3:41up, go down immediately, for the people you brought out of Egypt
- 3:45have corrupted themselves. How quickly they have turned
- 3:49from the way I commanded them to live.
- 3:51They have melted gold and made an idol for themselves.
- 3:56The Lord also said to me, I have seen how stubborn and rebellious
- 4:00these people are, leave me alone so I may destroy them and erase
- 4:05their name from under heaven. Then I will make a mighty nation
- 4:09of your descendants, a nation larger and more powerful than
- 4:13they are. So while the mountain was
- 4:15blazing with fire, I turned and came down, holding in my hands
- 4:20the two stone tablets inscribed with the terms of the covenant.
- 4:25But there below me I could see that you had sinned against the
- 4:29Lord your God. You had melted gold and made a
- 4:32calf idol for yourselves. How quickly you had turned away
- 4:36from the path the Lord had commanded you to follow.
- 4:40So I took the stone tablets and threw them to the ground,
- 4:43smashing them before your eyes. Then, as before, I threw myself
- 4:49down before the Lord. For 40 days and nights.
- 4:52I ate no bread and drank no water because of the great sin
- 4:57you had committed by doing what the Lord hated, provoking him to
- 5:01anger. I feared that the furious anger
- 5:04of the Lord, which turned him against you would drive him to
- 5:08destroy you. But again he listened to me.
- 5:12The Lord was so angry with Aaron that he wanted to destroy him
- 5:16too. But I prayed for Aaron, and the
- 5:19Lord spared him. I took your sin, the calf you
- 5:23had made, and I melted it down in the fire and ground it into
- 5:27fine dust. Then I threw the dust into the
- 5:31stream that flows down the mountain.
- 5:33You also made the Lord angry at Tabara Massa and Kibroth Hatava
- 5:40and at Kadesh Barnier. The Lord sent you out with this
- 5:43command. Go up and take over the land I
- 5:47have given you. But you rebelled against the
- 5:49command of the Lord your God and refuse to put your trust in Him
- 5:53or obey Him. Yes, you have been rebelling
- 5:56against the Lord as long as I have known you.
- 6:00That is why I threw myself down before the Lord for 40 days and
- 6:04nights, for the Lord said He would destroy you.
- 6:07I prayed to the Lord and said, O sovereign Lord, do not destroy
- 6:11them. They are your own people.
- 6:13They are your special possession, whom you redeemed
- 6:16from Egypt with your mighty power and your strong hand.
- 6:21Please overlook the stubbornness and the awful sin of these
- 6:24people and remember instead your servants Abraham, Isaac and
- 6:29Jacob. If you destroy these people, the
- 6:32Egyptians will say the Israelites died because the Lord
- 6:36wasn't able to bring them to the land he had promised to give
- 6:39them. Or they might say he destroyed
- 6:43them because he hated them. He deliberately took them into
- 6:47the wilderness to slaughter them.
- 6:50But they are your people and your special possession, whom
- 6:55you brought out of Egypt by your great strength and powerful arm.
- 7:10Ah, Lord, your voice can sometimes feel hard to hear, and
- 7:14in the midst of a world that is all too happy to shout loudly at
- 7:18us its own priorities and beliefs.
- 7:21I pray that you give us patient hearts so that when Moses is on
- 7:26that mountain for 40 days and 40 nights and it feels like you
- 7:30have forgotten us or it feels like you are not going to answer
- 7:34us, it's so easy for us to look elsewhere to find our peace or
- 7:39our comfort or our provision. But Lord, I pray that we
- 7:44continually and steadfastly look to you, our Saviour, our
- 7:50Provider, and our loving God. Thank you for all that you are
- 7:55for us and all that you give to us, and that we are your special
- 8:00possession. We just claim that status and
- 8:05commit anew to live as your people.
- 8:08And we pray all of this in the precious name of Jesus, Amen.
