- 0:03Speaker 1: Hi, get everybody on Dan Horden. Thanks for downloading The
- 0:06Speaker 1: Bengals Booth Podcast. The Go Big, Go Big, Go Big,
- 0:11Speaker 1: Go Big. Addition, as I introduce you to the new
- 0:16Speaker 1: very large man in the middle of the Bengals defense,
- 0:19Speaker 1: TJ Slayton. Then it's my final interview from the NFL
- 0:23Speaker 1: Scouting Combine as we hear from Charles Davis from CBS Sports.

- 0:49Speaker 1: a quick reminder that you can have the latest edition
- 0:52Speaker 1: of this podcast delivered write to your phone, tablet or
- 0:55Speaker 1: computer by subscribing wherever you get your podcasts. It's the
- 0:59Speaker 1: greatest thing since changing clocks. I did not enjoy losing
- 1:05Speaker 1: an hour of sleep last weekend for daylight savings, but
- 1:09Speaker 1: I did enjoy going around the house and changing our clocks.
- 1:13Speaker 1: It's the one area of my life where I might
- 1:16Speaker 1: have a slight case of OCD. You see, it's not
- 1:20Speaker 1: enough to just change the clocks. I have to make
- 1:23Speaker 1: sure they are synced up perfectly twice a year when
- 1:27Speaker 1: it's time to spring forward or fall back. So in
- 1:30Speaker 1: our kitchen, for example, I will make sure that the
- 1:34Speaker 1: clocks on the wall, coffee maker oven, and toaster oven
- 1:38Speaker 1: are all set within a split second of each other.
- 1:42Speaker 1: Is it a little obsessive? Absolutely? Is it also oddly satisfying? Three?
- 1:49Speaker 1: Two one? Yes. Now let's get to my first guest.
- 1:56Speaker 1: So far, in free agency, the Bengals have re signed
- 1:59Speaker 1: several of their own key players, including Mike Kasiki, B J. Hill, and,
- 2:03Speaker 1: according to published reports, Joseph Oside. They've brought back a
- 2:08Speaker 1: valuable player from the Super Bowl fifty six team in
- 2:10Speaker 1: running back sama J. P Rin, and added a couple
- 2:13Speaker 1: of players from other teams. Linebacker Orrin Berks, who played
- 2:18Speaker 1: nearly every snap on defense for Philly in the Eagle
- 2:21Speaker 1: Super Bowl win over the Chiefs, is expected to put
- 2:24Speaker 1: pen to paper early next week, and defensive tackle TJ. Slayton,
- 2:28Speaker 1: who started every game for Green Bay over the last
- 2:31Speaker 1: couple of years, signed his Bengals contract on Thursday. It's
- 2:35Speaker 1: reportedly a two year, fourteen million dollar deal. Two years ago,
- 2:41Speaker 1: Pro Football Focus ranked the three hundred and thirty pounds
- 2:44Speaker 1: Slaton as the number two nose tackle in the NFL
- 2:48Speaker 1: behind the New York Giants Dexter Lawrence. When the Bengals
- 2:51Speaker 1: hired new defensive coordinator Al gold and I asked him
- 2:54Speaker 1: about trying to acquire somebody like Slayton. Do you feel
- 3:00Speaker 1: like it's important to add size inside, particularly playing six
- 3:04Speaker 1: games in the AFC.
- 3:05Speaker 2: North, no doubt, especially with the running attacks that we'll see.
- 3:09Speaker 2: I haven't looked at the schedule yet. Overall, that's something
- 3:11Speaker 2: we'll do in the off season. But obviously if you
- 3:14Speaker 2: can stop the run, and more importantly than that is
- 3:17Speaker 2: you can't always play an out number box in this
- 3:19Speaker 2: day and age in the NFL, and so you need
- 3:21Speaker 2: some guys that can gap in half or get the
- 3:23Speaker 2: ball on the ground without having an out number box.
- 3:26Speaker 2: And I think that's where the scheme is important. That's
- 3:30Speaker 2: where having that size and strength, and you know, those
- 3:33Speaker 2: are the guys that you know, we're hoping to move
- 3:35Speaker 2: forward with. You know in the future.
- 3:38Speaker 1: Slayton certainly has size and strength, but he's also an
- 3:42Speaker 1: athletic freak, and that's where I started our conversation. TJ.
- 3:48Speaker 1: You are six four three point thirty, but I looked
- 3:51Speaker 1: up some footage on the internet and saw you doing
- 3:54Speaker 1: a windmill dunk just a few years ago. Can you
- 3:58Speaker 1: still dunk at your size? Yeah?
- 4:02Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean because I'm still working out all the time,
- 4:05Speaker 3: so the body is still able to do those things.
- 4:08Speaker 3: So you know, I don't think I ever really lost it.
- 4:11Speaker 3: It's just every now and then you just slow down,
- 4:14Speaker 3: but you know, you got to pick it back up.
- 4:16Speaker 3: So usually in the offseason I play basketball.
- 4:19Speaker 1: So what are the some of the freaky athletic things
- 4:21Speaker 1: that you've done at your size that have made other
- 4:24Speaker 1: people go, come.
- 4:26Speaker 3: On, no way, I've did a I've done a couple
- 4:29Speaker 3: of things, handstands, bat flips, headstands, spin around on it
- 4:38Speaker 3: like on the ground on your back.
- 4:40Speaker 1: It a lot, so backflip every now and then.
- 4:44Speaker 3: I try to stay away from the bat flips, but
- 4:46Speaker 3: they could be done.
- 4:48Speaker 1: All right, I'd like to see it. That's pretty incredible.
- 4:51Speaker 1: So I think people listening to this know that you
- 4:54Speaker 1: spent four years with the Green Bay Packers, and for
- 4:56Speaker 1: the first three of those seasons, Jerry Montgomery was your
- 4:59Speaker 1: defensive line coach. He's now here with that job in Cincinnati.
- 5:03Speaker 1: How big of a factor was that connection?
- 5:06Speaker 3: Uh? It was big. It was pretty big. Uh. I
- 5:10Speaker 3: was one of the I was one of the guys
- 5:12Speaker 3: that didn't want to see him go. But now that
- 5:16Speaker 3: we and we're both in a place where, you know,
- 5:18Speaker 3: we feel good about one another, So I think it's
- 5:22Speaker 3: gonna be great.
- 5:23Speaker 1: He's a young guy. He almost looks like he could
- 5:26Speaker 1: still play. He played your position, he played tackle. Yeah.
- 5:30Speaker 1: Uh does that help you connect with him? Uh?
- 5:32Speaker 3: Most definitely, because then he he understands the ins and outs. Uh,
- 5:36Speaker 3: he understands, like if something was going wrong in the game,
- 5:39Speaker 3: he he can get it, cause like, well, we played
- 5:42Speaker 3: the same position, So I understand what exactly what you're
- 5:44Speaker 3: going through, what you're seeing, so I can I know
- 5:47Speaker 3: exactly what you need for me to help you get
- 5:50Speaker 3: better at the position. So that's good.
- 5:52Speaker 1: So your eyes kind of light up as you describe that.
- 5:55Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah, Cause it's as I'm saying, as a
- 5:58Speaker 3: football player, you always want to get better, you know,
- 6:00Speaker 3: you always want to try and find some knowledge or
- 6:03Speaker 3: find some something in the game that helped you play faster,
- 6:07Speaker 3: or you knowing the formation or knowing where the running
- 6:10Speaker 3: back's going to help you play faster so you can
- 6:12Speaker 3: be successful.
- 6:14Speaker 1: We're visiting the TJ. Slayton. The Bengals have struggled at
- 6:17Speaker 1: stopping the run the last couple of years. You are
- 6:20Speaker 1: known for your ability to stop the run. Do you
- 6:22Speaker 1: take run stopper as a compliment?
- 6:27Speaker 3: I take it as that's what I do because at
- 6:32Speaker 3: the end of the day, I know I'm not the
- 6:34Speaker 3: best pass rusher. I'm not saying I can't pass rush,
- 6:37Speaker 3: but stopping the run is my number one on when
- 6:41Speaker 3: it comes to the list of things to do in
- 6:43Speaker 3: the game, I gotta stop the run before I can
- 6:46Speaker 3: rush the passer or play a screen or whatever. I
- 6:49Speaker 3: got to stop the run first.
- 6:51Speaker 1: ESPN graded you as the number one defensive tackle in
- 6:56Speaker 1: run stopping win rate last year. I assume that you've
- 7:00Speaker 1: heard that or saw that stat what's a take. What's
- 7:03Speaker 1: it take to be the guy that does the dirty
- 7:05Speaker 1: work and stops to run.
- 7:07Speaker 3: It's all in the technique. Come out your hips, use
- 7:11Speaker 3: your hands, knock the guy back and shed them off
- 7:13Speaker 3: and make the play.
- 7:15Speaker 1: How much of it is want to.
- 7:17Speaker 3: Every play, every player that you see, you want to make.
- 7:20Speaker 3: You want to make it. You want you want to
- 7:21Speaker 3: play to be yours. So at the end of the day,
- 7:24Speaker 3: like you going as hard as you can to try
- 7:26Speaker 3: to make that play. So I feel like i'ma be
- 7:29Speaker 3: able to trans I feel like I'm gonna be able
- 7:30Speaker 3: to transition pretty well.
- 7:32Speaker 1: Here. Defense takes all eleven. But how much of a
- 7:35Speaker 1: difference can one guy make at stopping the run in
- 7:38Speaker 1: the middle of the defensive.
- 7:39Speaker 3: Line, Because it's like it's it's like it gets repetitive,
- 7:44Speaker 3: it gets like frustrating for the running back, like he
- 7:46Speaker 3: keeps trying to run the ball in the A gaps,
- 7:48Speaker 3: keep trying to run the ball in the B gaps,
- 7:50Speaker 3: and it's not working.
- 7:51Speaker 4: Like what's going on.
- 7:52Speaker 3: It's gonna it's kind of demoralizing for offense that they
- 7:54Speaker 3: can't run the ball. So it's like, that's that's good
- 7:57Speaker 3: for my confidence, and I'm pretty sure that's gonna be
- 7:59Speaker 3: good for it nobody else confidence around me. It's like,
- 8:01Speaker 3: we're doing our job, so that's something we should, you know,
- 8:04Speaker 3: we should feel good about.
- 8:05Speaker 1: We're chatting with TJ. Slayton, one of your most impressive
- 8:08Speaker 1: traits in your four NFL seasons is that you've never
- 8:11Speaker 1: missed a game regular season or postseason, and the Packers
- 8:14Speaker 1: went to the playoffs three times in your four years.
- 8:18Speaker 1: You had to play through a lot. I mean, nobody
- 8:21Speaker 1: stays completely healthy through seventeen eighteen nineteen games, whatever it
- 8:25Speaker 1: was in a season. What were some of the thought
- 8:27Speaker 1: some of the things you gutted through.
- 8:28Speaker 3: I've had my knicks, uh, thumbs, fingers, turf toe, ankle
- 8:35Speaker 3: ten and night is shoulders. It's not easy, you know,
- 8:40Speaker 3: but I love the game and I don't want to
- 8:43Speaker 3: miss a game, so I always try to. I don't know,
- 8:45Speaker 3: I fight through a lot of stuff and that that's
- 8:48Speaker 3: good and a bad thing, but I don't view it
- 8:50Speaker 3: as a bad thing because I want to be out there. Uh.
- 8:54Speaker 3: I probably mostly one hundred percent of the time, I'm
- 8:57Speaker 3: will tell the Chrainers however, I feel I'm still going
- 8:59Speaker 3: to play.
- 9:00Speaker 1: Uh.
- 9:01Speaker 3: But it's just like I think, I honestly believe, like
- 9:04Speaker 3: it's me not growing up with like brothers. So I
- 9:07Speaker 3: always want to, you know, be out there playing with
- 9:09Speaker 3: my brothers, and I always wanted to. I don't want
- 9:12Speaker 3: to miss a game because I know how they feel
- 9:14Speaker 3: when they miss a game, So I don't want that feeling.
- 9:17Speaker 3: But at the end of the day, like, that's how
- 9:19Speaker 3: that's how I see it.
- 9:21Speaker 1: That means a lot to the people in the room.
- 9:23Speaker 1: How much respect do you think you've gained for your
- 9:25Speaker 1: teammates in Green Bay from never missing a game in
- 9:28Speaker 1: four years.
- 9:30Speaker 3: I'm pretty sure they can look back on it and
- 9:32Speaker 3: be like, he's solid, he ain't gonna miss a game.
- 9:35Speaker 3: He always gonna play through whatever he got going on,
- 9:38Speaker 3: or at least he's gonna try. I think one thing
- 9:42Speaker 3: they can probably say, it could say is about me,
- 9:44Speaker 3: is like I play I played hard when I was
- 9:46Speaker 3: out there.
- 9:48Speaker 1: You were a high school All American as an offensive lineman.
- 9:52Speaker 1: I know you played both, but you're graded as the
- 9:55Speaker 1: number three guard in your high school class. How did
- 9:59Speaker 1: you become a defensive lineman full time at Florida?
- 10:02Speaker 3: Uh? I just switched, just switched over. I asks the coaches, like,
- 10:06Speaker 3: you know, could I play defense?
- 10:07Speaker 1: Uh?
- 10:07Speaker 3: They was like, and they said they needed some help.
- 10:11Speaker 3: They agreed to it, and that's how we ended up
- 10:14Speaker 3: on the defensive side of the ball.
- 10:16Speaker 1: Do you like that side of the ball more? Having
- 10:19Speaker 1: played both?
- 10:20Speaker 3: I like defense?
- 10:20Speaker 5: Better.
- 10:21Speaker 3: I like defense better. Offense was fun in high school,
- 10:24Speaker 3: you know, blocking for Tony Mitchell and Isaiah McKinsey and
- 10:27Speaker 3: all that. That was fun, but it was like when
- 10:30Speaker 3: I was chasing back then, I was chasing like individual success.
- 10:34Speaker 3: So once I got to college, that kind of defense
- 10:38Speaker 3: showed me, you know, what it all was about. And
- 10:41Speaker 3: on defensive side of the ball, it takes all the living.
- 10:44Speaker 3: So and once I got behind that, and once I
- 10:47Speaker 3: started believing in that, everything just started falling into place
- 10:51Speaker 3: and everything really started taking off.
- 10:54Speaker 1: Jerry Montgomery is not your only connection at Cincinnati. Your
- 10:58Speaker 1: former high school and college team. Marco Wilson is here,
- 11:01Speaker 1: Money mac Evan McPherson is here. Does that add to
- 11:05Speaker 1: your comfort level knowing that you'll walk into a locker
- 11:07Speaker 1: room with some guys that you've already played with.
- 11:09Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, I trained with I trained with cam Uh,
- 11:14Speaker 3: So that was fun. You know, it's always, you know,
- 11:17Speaker 3: fun to be around people that you've known before, So
- 11:20Speaker 3: it brings you some comfort, so you don't feel like
- 11:23Speaker 3: you're all alone in a new place. So that's good.
- 11:27Speaker 3: That's that's actually great for me because I mean I
- 11:32Speaker 3: wouldn't say it like it gets to me. But it's good,
- 11:35Speaker 3: you know, to have people around that.
- 11:37Speaker 1: You know Cam Sample when you said you trained with Cam, Yeah,
- 11:41Speaker 1: because there's Cam Taylor Britt as well, so just.
- 11:43Speaker 3: Check it is Sample the Detagler.
- 11:48Speaker 1: So you had it good in Green Bay. The team
- 11:52Speaker 1: was good, you had individual success. I know you weren't
- 11:55Speaker 1: necessarily looking to leave, but football is a business. Did
- 11:59Speaker 1: this underscore or that aspect of the career?
- 12:02Speaker 3: Oh, I wouldn't say underscore. It was just like, you know,
- 12:05Speaker 3: I got drafted there, four year deal. You know, it
- 12:11Speaker 3: came to it and you thought you did enough, you know,
- 12:15Speaker 3: to stay, or you did enough to deserve to stay,
- 12:19Speaker 3: but you know that just wasn't the case. So no
- 12:22Speaker 3: hard feelings, you know, it's just it's just time to
- 12:25Speaker 3: move on.
- 12:27Speaker 1: Your rookie year, the Bengals went to the Super Bowl.
- 12:30Speaker 1: The next year, they went to the AFC Championship Game.
- 12:32Speaker 1: Obviously the last couple of years haven't gone quite as well.
- 12:35Speaker 1: But since you've been in this league, the Bengals have
- 12:38Speaker 1: been considered to be a contender. Yeah, what's that mean
- 12:41Speaker 1: to you? Joining the team now.
- 12:44Speaker 3: That means they have the guys, That mean they have
- 12:46Speaker 3: the vision and they have the mindset to go out
- 12:49Speaker 3: there and execute and get to the dance. So like
- 12:54Speaker 3: realizing that, how can you not say though, you got
- 13:01Speaker 3: people around here, even people upstairs, who understand what it
- 13:05Speaker 3: takes to get to the most important game that we
- 13:09Speaker 3: all dream of playing in. So it's just like, no
- 13:13Speaker 3: disrespect to the guys at Green Bay. I'm not saying
- 13:16Speaker 3: they didn't know what I'm saying, but this organization has
- 13:18Speaker 3: been there and then has been close the next year,
- 13:23Speaker 3: so they know exactly what it takes to get over
- 13:26Speaker 3: the hunt of those first two games that you need
- 13:28Speaker 3: to get over in the playoffs. So it's like, Okay,
- 13:33Speaker 3: I got that, plus I got a coach, and plus
- 13:36Speaker 3: I got a team, so it's like, all right, cool,
- 13:38Speaker 3: I can work for that.
- 13:41Speaker 1: I think if you ask a lot of people around
- 13:42Speaker 1: the league about the Bengals, they would say, as long
- 13:44Speaker 1: as you got a quarterback like Joe Burrow, you got
- 13:46Speaker 1: a chance to win the whole thing.
- 13:48Speaker 3: He got pieces. I think the offense is great, especially
- 13:52Speaker 3: with the receivers him the running back all the way
- 13:55Speaker 3: down to Olamas. So I know from watching them from TV,
- 13:59Speaker 3: I know that he got it under control, you know,
- 14:02Speaker 3: And I know from the TV that, like, you know,
- 14:06Speaker 3: you could tell from his eyes that you know, he
- 14:09Speaker 3: want to play, He want to win the championship. He
- 14:11Speaker 3: wanted to continue to be a you know, a great quarterback.
- 14:16Speaker 3: Obviously you could tell he doesn't want like the little
- 14:19Speaker 3: things to happen, interceptions, the close losses, like nobody wants that.
- 14:23Speaker 3: But I can get behind Joe.
- 14:27Speaker 1: You're an established bro, You're not a fan boy. But
- 14:30Speaker 1: is there anybody here that you're kind of excited to meet,
- 14:32Speaker 1: whether it's Joe or Jamar or anybody else on the steam?
- 14:36Speaker 3: Uh, I think, I think, I think I have fun,
- 14:40Speaker 3: you know, chopping up with bj like for the first time.
- 14:43Speaker 3: I mean, I've watched highlights and I've seen him, but
- 14:46Speaker 3: I ain't really get to see him. I ain't really
- 14:47Speaker 3: get to speak to him or like understand like you know,
- 14:51Speaker 3: where his football game comes from or whatever whatnot, so
- 14:54Speaker 3: that it's gonna be interested.
- 14:55Speaker 1: Yeah, you guys will hit it off famously, I'm sure. Uh,
- 14:59Speaker 1: you are exactly what this defense needs, a big immovable
- 15:04Speaker 1: object in the middle of the defensive line. We're happier here.
- 15:07Speaker 1: I appreciate your time. Look forward to seeing you play
- 15:09Speaker 1: this year.
- 15:10Speaker 3: Thank you.
- 15:10Speaker 1: Appreciate it. With Slayton in the middle of their defense,
- 15:14Speaker 1: the Packers finished third in the NFL in rushing yards
- 15:17Speaker 1: allowed per attempt and seventh and rushing alloweds per game.
- 15:21Speaker 1: Last year. The Bengals were sixteenth and nineteenth in those
- 15:25Speaker 1: two categories. The Bengals Booth Podcast is brought to you
- 15:29Speaker 1: by pay Corps, proud to be the Bengals official HR
- 15:31Speaker 1: software provider, by Alta Fiber future proof fiber Internet designed
- 15:36Speaker 1: to elevate your home, business and community to a new level,
- 15:39Speaker 1: and by Kettering Health the best care for the best fans.
- 15:43Speaker 1: Kettering Health is the official healthcare provider of the Bengals.
- 15:47Speaker 1: Up next Charles Davis, who calls NFL games for CBS
- 15:51Speaker 1: and covers the draft for the NFL Network. I caught
- 15:55Speaker 1: up with him recently at the NFL Scouting Combine, a
- 15:58Speaker 1: few days after Duke toe and called the Bengals a
- 16:01Speaker 1: championship caliber team.
- 16:05Speaker 4: I agree with Duke that they are championship caliber team.
- 16:08Speaker 5: I think what we've got to look at, though, is
- 16:10Speaker 5: they didn't make it two years ago, and that was
- 16:13Speaker 5: an easy reason why Joe.
- 16:14Speaker 4: Burrow was hurt last year.
- 16:17Speaker 5: Not making a little more problematic so I think, based
- 16:21Speaker 5: off of what I'm seeing, what Duke's saying is, we
- 16:23Speaker 5: have pieces, we have players. What he's expecting is players
- 16:26Speaker 5: to play better and new staff, especially on the defensive
- 16:29Speaker 5: side of the ball, that they will be better that way.
- 16:32Speaker 4: And if so, they're right back in the mixing, back
- 16:34Speaker 4: in the fight.
- 16:35Speaker 5: I think that he is saying that to make sure
- 16:37Speaker 5: everybody knows this organization doesn't plan to go anywhere, and
- 16:41Speaker 5: behind the scenes, I think he must to make a
- 16:43Speaker 5: few moves.
- 16:44Speaker 1: He also expressed confidence that they can extend the contracts
- 16:47Speaker 1: of Jamar Chase t Higgins and Trey Hendrickson. It's obviously
- 16:51Speaker 1: a lot of money. Do you buy it? Do you
- 16:54Speaker 1: find yourself skeptical? Where do you stand on that?
- 16:56Speaker 4: I buy it?
- 16:57Speaker 5: And the reason I buy it is that quarterback. You know,
- 17:02Speaker 5: when you have him, you gotta figure it out. Okay,
- 17:05Speaker 5: I realize he said the windows always open if I'm here.
- 17:09Speaker 5: That's great confidence, and in most cases he's probably right.
- 17:12Speaker 4: But he can't do it by himself.
- 17:13Speaker 5: He's got to have that help and you have to
- 17:16Speaker 5: have your core. And Dan, we've seen wherever the best
- 17:20Speaker 5: teams are, their core kind of stays intact. And you
- 17:24Speaker 5: have to build into pieces around them because of free
- 17:26Speaker 5: agency and how people move, but that core goes with you.
- 17:30Speaker 4: That's a pretty good core right there. Best pass you know, number.
- 17:33Speaker 5: One sat guy last year, number one receiver with the
- 17:36Speaker 5: triple crowd quarterback dead in any other year was an MVP.
- 17:40Speaker 4: You better take care of everyone.
- 17:41Speaker 5: Oh, by the way, T Higgins, Reggie Wayne, and Marvin Harrison.
- 17:47Speaker 5: Harrison was the one, Wayne was the two. Harrison retires,
- 17:51Speaker 5: Wayne became the one seamlessly. This is one of the
- 17:54Speaker 5: few places where you could envision that as well. If
- 17:57Speaker 5: Jamar Chase isn't there, you have a one and is.
- 18:00Speaker 1: T Higgins and no issue with spending that much money
- 18:03Speaker 1: on one position.
- 18:04Speaker 5: Group is always an issue, but you've got to figure
- 18:08Speaker 5: it out because that's how you score points, that's where
- 18:10Speaker 5: your identity is, that's where your team is. So if
- 18:13Speaker 5: you're going to put the money in there, you may
- 18:16Speaker 5: not be able to put the same money in your defense.
- 18:18Speaker 4: But your defense has to play to a minimum level.
- 18:21Speaker 5: Last year they didn't for whatever reason. They did not
- 18:24Speaker 5: surprise me as much as problem with anyone else out there.
- 18:28Speaker 5: But if they just play to a minimum level with
- 18:30Speaker 5: that offense, you.
- 18:32Speaker 4: Like your chances.
- 18:33Speaker 1: Have you been at all surprised by how public Joe
- 18:36Speaker 1: Burrow has been, beginning with about a month ago in
- 18:39Speaker 1: the season, for what he would like to see the
- 18:41Speaker 1: Bengals front office do.
- 18:43Speaker 4: With most people, I'd say yes.
- 18:44Speaker 5: With Joe Burrow, I say no, because that's to me,
- 18:47Speaker 5: that's the core of who.
- 18:48Speaker 4: Joe Burrow is not going to talk a heck of
- 18:51Speaker 4: a lot. You know that better than anyone. He's not.
- 18:54Speaker 4: You know, like when we do our production meetings with him, he.
- 18:57Speaker 5: Comes in, he shakes hands, he sits down, he looks
- 18:59Speaker 5: at the comp does't he like, time's yours?
- 19:01Speaker 4: What do you want? And I think that we're very
- 19:03Speaker 4: good with at our crew.
- 19:04Speaker 5: We believe that we are, and we hope that Joe
- 19:06Speaker 5: would agree with us, ask our questions. Don't linger. We're
- 19:10Speaker 5: not trying to play hail fellow. Well met He doesn't
- 19:12Speaker 5: care about that. He's not rude, but that's not what
- 19:15Speaker 5: his business is. His business winning football games. That's why
- 19:18Speaker 5: I'm not surprised he said something. He knows he's the franchise,
- 19:21Speaker 5: he knows he's the guy, and he knows what he
- 19:24Speaker 5: wants out of his team and his offense, and there's
- 19:26Speaker 5: a loyalty in that statement as well.
- 19:28Speaker 4: These guys are produced for me. I want them taking care.
- 19:30Speaker 1: Of Charles Davis is our guest. I've heard from several
- 19:34Speaker 1: NFL draft gurus that if you are looking for defensive linemen,
- 19:39Speaker 1: this is a good year to need them. Do you agree?
- 19:41Speaker 4: I agree totally.
- 19:43Speaker 5: And you know my colleague Daniel Jeremiah, who is the
- 19:47Speaker 5: best in this business of this draft stuff from our.
- 19:49Speaker 4: TV side, He's called a meat and potatoes draft, so
- 19:54Speaker 4: I don't see any reason to try and term it
- 19:55Speaker 4: anything else.
- 19:56Speaker 5: I think that he is right about that. They're defensive
- 19:59Speaker 5: lineman all the way through. Big guys inside edge Rusher's
- 20:04Speaker 5: not quite the same, but still guys who can make
- 20:08Speaker 5: plays like Landon Jackson is this big monster guy from
- 20:11Speaker 5: from Arkansas. Love the way he plays, will battle you,
- 20:13Speaker 5: get the extra effort and all probably not double digitsat
- 20:17Speaker 5: guy though, even though he's gonna probably play on the edge,
- 20:19Speaker 5: but he'll beat you.
- 20:20Speaker 4: Up all day long. All right, Can you move inside?
- 20:22Speaker 5: And you know you got Mason Graham and Kenneth Grant
- 20:25Speaker 5: from Michigan. I don't know how anyone move the ball
- 20:27Speaker 5: on that duo. And that's just a couple of guys
- 20:29Speaker 5: that we're starting with. We could go out all day,
- 20:32Speaker 5: but I think he's right.
- 20:33Speaker 1: I don't think i've seen Charles Davis's mock draft one
- 20:36Speaker 1: point oh yet. It's not out there yet. Any thought though,
- 20:41Speaker 1: what position group or where you're likely to have the
- 20:44Speaker 1: Bengals choosing.
- 20:45Speaker 4: Boy, I hadn't even thought about that part of it yet.
- 20:49Speaker 5: I have to wait and see, Dan, We'll see where
- 20:51Speaker 5: we go.
- 20:51Speaker 4: I'm gonna end up doing three, all right.
- 20:53Speaker 5: I'll do one probably right after probably about the week
- 20:56Speaker 5: after the combine, be my first one, and then there'll
- 20:59Speaker 5: be a second, probably mid March, and then a third
- 21:01Speaker 5: one right before the draft, and we'll just see where
- 21:05Speaker 5: it all goes.
- 21:05Speaker 4: But I know this, We're not.
- 21:07Speaker 5: Gonna have to wait to number fifteen pick to get
- 21:09Speaker 5: our first defensive player this year.
- 21:13Speaker 1: The Philadelphia Eagles are the reigning Super Bowl champions. They've
- 21:16Speaker 1: done a phenomenal job in team building. Howie Roseman gets
- 21:20Speaker 1: all the flowers, and it's well deserved. Is there anything
- 21:23Speaker 1: Philly is doing that Cincinnati can steal or can try
- 21:29Speaker 1: to emulate from a team building standpoint?
- 21:32Speaker 5: I think they're doing what all teams talk to us
- 21:34Speaker 5: about they're just doing it really well, and that is
- 21:37Speaker 5: you take care of your lines, your offensive and defensive lines, and.
- 21:41Speaker 4: You work your way from there. But they've hit, you
- 21:44Speaker 4: know they've hit.
- 21:45Speaker 5: It's not just drafting people and hoping. You're always hoping
- 21:50Speaker 5: when you draft, they've really hit. Like Jalen Carter was
- 21:54Speaker 5: not supposed to be available at the number nine pick.
- 21:57Speaker 5: He was the best player in the draft, and then
- 21:59Speaker 5: he got in trouble right before the draft. So now
- 22:02Speaker 5: he goes into play and when he got to a
- 22:05Speaker 5: certain range, Philadelphia said go and they jumped up and
- 22:09Speaker 5: got him. And I think they had to go what
- 22:10Speaker 5: two spots to get him because at ten he was
- 22:13Speaker 5: gonna be gone. Guess what they got it done. Jordan
- 22:16Speaker 5: Davis has elevated his play as a first round guy
- 22:20Speaker 5: inside and has increased stamina. You know, you flicking that
- 22:23Speaker 5: offensive line model. One thing I think Hawi Rosemand does
- 22:28Speaker 5: really well is that he drafts ahead of time. For drafting.
- 22:32Speaker 5: Cam Jurgens came in as their center of the future
- 22:36Speaker 5: for Jason Kelsey. You remember Dan, We thought maybe Jason
- 22:39Speaker 5: was going one more year, but.
- 22:40Speaker 4: He go another three.
- 22:42Speaker 5: So they put Cam Jurgens a guard and told that,
- 22:44Speaker 5: so he's gonna get experienced. He moved over seamlessly. This year,
- 22:47Speaker 5: they're still running that quarterback lead and he's the one
- 22:51Speaker 5: snapman and pulling.
- 22:52Speaker 4: If you didn't see a sixty te right, if you
- 22:54Speaker 4: didn't see his number, you'd swear Kelsey was back out
- 22:57Speaker 4: there doing it again.
- 22:58Speaker 5: That was how he roseman, seeing future, getting ahead of it,
- 23:02Speaker 5: and already backfilling off of it.
- 23:04Speaker 4: About Mackay Beckton, Remember the T shirt you wore. I
- 23:08Speaker 4: am a.
- 23:08Speaker 5: Left tackle, and okay, you may think your left tack,
- 23:12Speaker 5: but you're on your last stop here, dude, all right,
- 23:14Speaker 5: because you're gonna compete to be the swing tackle.
- 23:18Speaker 4: And then one day someone was.
- 23:20Speaker 5: Out and Jeff Stoutlin, the great Offensilza, take some reps
- 23:23Speaker 5: at guard. Oh and then he said, okay, guess what,
- 23:27Speaker 5: You're not competing for the starting guard job with Tyler
- 23:29Speaker 5: Steve wins the job.
- 23:31Speaker 4: You think you could get Mackai beck Dion to want
- 23:33Speaker 4: to be a tackle again. No, his whole career is transformed.
- 23:36Speaker 5: They do a great job drafting, they do a great
- 23:38Speaker 5: job developing, coaching, all those things that go along with it.
- 23:43Speaker 5: To me, the lesson is you have to have it all.
- 23:45Speaker 5: You can't just have the draft, you can't just have
- 23:47Speaker 5: the coaching, can't just have the talent.
- 23:50Speaker 4: Philadelphia maximizes it, every bit of it.
- 23:53Speaker 1: You have had the good fortune misfortune. I don't know
- 23:57Speaker 1: of calling the Bengals season opener in recent years, and
- 24:00Speaker 1: clearly this is something that's got to be fixed. Yeah,
- 24:04Speaker 1: well they got to find a way to fix it.
- 24:05Speaker 1: The definition of insanity is doing the same thing and
- 24:08Speaker 1: hoping for a different result, So they've got to mix
- 24:11Speaker 1: it up. Any theories, I wish.
- 24:13Speaker 4: I had one, because I thought we had it last year.
- 24:15Speaker 1: Dan.
- 24:16Speaker 5: Truthfully, I thought the theory was very simple, that Joe
- 24:19Speaker 5: Burrow had been hurt right or coming off of injury
- 24:23Speaker 5: the year before, so his preseason wasn't full on.
- 24:26Speaker 4: Remember what was it happened Deck to me? One year?
- 24:29Speaker 5: Right, he's coming off in acl one year, all those things.
- 24:33Speaker 5: Last year we didn't have that. He was able to
- 24:36Speaker 5: practice full I thought, boy, they are primed now to
- 24:39Speaker 5: get out of the gate and go.
- 24:41Speaker 4: No one more surprised. Listen, I know Cincinnati fans were stunned.
- 24:45Speaker 5: No one was more surprised than us in the announcementoth
- 24:47Speaker 5: watching that New England opener, none of us like, in
- 24:51Speaker 5: no way anyone saw it. I think we go into
- 24:54Speaker 5: every game knowing anything can happen, but we're human. No
- 24:59Speaker 5: one that like, WHOA, what just happened here? So my
- 25:03Speaker 5: theory's out in the window. Now I've got nothing because
- 25:05Speaker 5: I thought the theory was just get Joe healthy and
- 25:07Speaker 5: have a good preseason. That wasn't it either.
- 25:11Speaker 1: Well, we'll see if they play guys in the preseason
- 25:14Speaker 1: what else they might try. I'm sure they're gonna try
- 25:16Speaker 1: something different. We'll see if it produces a better result.
- 25:19Speaker 1: In any case, you're crazy busy here in Indianapolis. I
- 25:22Speaker 1: really appreciate you getting us some of your time. Look
- 25:24Speaker 1: forward to a seeing you next year.
- 25:26Speaker 4: Hey, no busier than you are. Thanks a lot. It's
- 25:27Speaker 4: always great to see you.
- 25:30Speaker 1: Since that conversation, Charles has released his first mock draft.
- 25:34Speaker 1: He has quarterbacks Shador Sanders, cam Ward and Jackson Dart
- 25:39Speaker 1: going one, two three, and has the Bengals selecting Texas
- 25:43Speaker 1: A and m Edge rusher Shamar Stewart seventeenth overall. Stuart
- 25:47Speaker 1: is six' five just under two hundred and seventy pounds
- 25:51Speaker 1: and ran the forty yard dash in four point five nine.
- 25:55Speaker 1: Seconds his vertical, leap again at nearly two hundred and seventy,
- 25:59Speaker 1: pounds was forty. Inches the knock On steward is that
- 26:04Speaker 1: his incredible athleticism didn't lead to great production At TEXAS
