Latest / Normally / Normally Podcast: Anti-ICE Church Protest Sparks First Amendment Outrage, Media Spin & Virginia Politics
Transcript
- 0:07Speaker 1: Yea, we are back on normally normal things for when
- 0:10Speaker 1: the news it's weird. I am Mary Catholic and I'm
- 0:13Speaker 1: Carol Markowitz.
- 0:14Speaker 2: You know I'm noticing. I'm like in a heavy hoodie
- 0:17Speaker 2: and you are in a tank top and you live
- 0:20Speaker 2: in Virginia and I live in Florida.
- 0:23Speaker 1: You know what, It is very cold right now. But
- 0:25Speaker 1: perhaps I have just become like more northern, I guess
- 0:30Speaker 1: since I've been here. No, it's it's warm in my
- 0:33Speaker 1: room so here, I am. Yeah, I think that's what
- 0:35Speaker 1: it is.
- 0:35Speaker 2: We end up like either heating or cooling our houses
- 0:39Speaker 2: to the temperature that we like them.
- 0:40Speaker 1: And yeah, so this is because Barack Obama is not
- 0:43Speaker 1: president to tell me not to, but we want Al Gore.
- 0:47Speaker 2: Although al Gore, of course famously his house had like
- 0:50Speaker 2: the largest carbon footprint of any house in the area
- 0:53Speaker 2: because he did whatever he wanted while telling us not to.
- 0:56Speaker 1: It's for all of you to fix the problem, not him. Right,
- 1:00Speaker 1: He's just going to speak and get a million dollars
- 1:02Speaker 1: about the problem. All right, let's get into it.
- 1:04Speaker 2: It is Martin Luther King day, our kids are home
- 1:07Speaker 2: from school. We're just going to have to roll with this.
- 1:10Speaker 1: Indeed, we'll see who sneaks in. Oh yeah, all right.
- 1:13Speaker 2: So there was a protest over the weekend at a
- 1:16Speaker 2: church in Saint Paul, and it is one of the
- 1:19Speaker 2: most vile things I have seen in some time. A
- 1:23Speaker 2: group of protesters, anti ICE protesters invaded a church in
- 1:28Speaker 2: Saint Paul. They yelled at the congregants, They shamed the
- 1:34Speaker 2: pastor for not standing with them and not letting them
- 1:38Speaker 2: just run rampant in his church. And Don Lemon was
- 1:42Speaker 2: there for all of it because he is part of
- 1:45Speaker 2: their group. When he got to the protest, he kisses
- 1:48Speaker 2: the main protester, lady Hello, and proceeds to interview her
- 1:52Speaker 2: about her amazing work of going to various police officers'
- 1:56Speaker 2: houses and harassing them there. And he's just interviewing her
- 2:01Speaker 2: and nodding along.
- 2:03Speaker 1: With all of it.
- 2:03Speaker 2: It was I truly, I can't imagine that most Americans
- 2:08Speaker 2: watching this aren't going to be as disgusted as I am.
- 2:11Speaker 2: And I hope that there are arrests. I'm very much not.
- 2:15Speaker 2: You know, I at no point was I a lock
- 2:18Speaker 2: her up chander in twenty sixteen or any of it
- 2:23Speaker 2: in general. Don't think that arresting your political opponents. Is
- 2:28Speaker 2: a great idea, but this is not acceptable. And this
- 2:32Speaker 2: is so across the line that liberals need to understand.
- 2:35Speaker 3: That, well, yeah, it is against the law right and
- 2:38Speaker 3: against the law correct.
- 2:40Speaker 1: What they believe is that they are operating under the
- 2:43Speaker 1: First Amendment. In fact, they are not. They are violating
- 2:46Speaker 1: the First Amendment rights of the people in the congregation
- 2:49Speaker 1: to gather peaceably in worship. Now, the ostensible reason for
- 2:53Speaker 1: this is that the pastor is in some way is
- 2:57Speaker 1: named in some lawsuit about ice peak because he's like
- 3:00Speaker 1: a director of a field office or something. Yeah, doesn't matter,
- 3:05Speaker 1: doesn't at all, It doesn't matter.
- 3:07Speaker 2: What's funny about this. Sorry, I was going to say
- 3:09Speaker 2: just for the arrest part. If they do get arrested,
- 3:11Speaker 2: it's likely going to be under the FACE Act, which
- 3:15Speaker 2: is the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act of
- 3:18Speaker 2: nineteen ninety four, a US federal law making it illegal
- 3:21Speaker 2: to use force, threats, or physical obstruction to prevent people
- 3:24Speaker 2: from obtaining or providing reproductive health services or exercising religious
- 3:29Speaker 2: freedom at places of worship. It's going to be some
- 3:32Speaker 2: level of irony that the same law that doesn't allow
- 3:35Speaker 2: protesters to invade say, a planned parenthood location is going
- 3:40Speaker 2: to be the law that gets the people that protested
- 3:44Speaker 2: inside this church.
- 3:45Speaker 1: Now here's the thing, Carol, is that you're right. People
- 3:48Speaker 1: who see this will be appalled. People will not see
- 3:52Speaker 1: it largely, people who are not deeply engaged in politics
- 3:56Speaker 1: will not see it. The press is not going to
- 3:58Speaker 1: cover this. In fact, I think the only way the
- 4:00Speaker 1: press will cover it, which could come back to bite them,
- 4:03Speaker 1: is if they cover that people are being rightly arrested
- 4:08Speaker 1: or prosecuted or fine or something for this behavior. Because
- 4:12Speaker 1: you are not allowed to roll up in a church
- 4:16Speaker 1: take it over, and it's doin their service. These poor
- 4:19Speaker 1: worshipers are just walking out the door like I guess
- 4:23Speaker 1: we're done now. And then women actually interviewed We're going
- 4:26Speaker 1: to play a clip of him, but he interviewed another
- 4:28Speaker 1: guy who was just wouldn't have the gaslighting and was like,
- 4:31Speaker 1: what good have you done here? What good have you
- 4:33Speaker 1: done here? None? And that's this is just so characteristic
- 4:37Speaker 1: of the left is that they will in this case,
- 4:40Speaker 1: as they do in many they will push the boundaries,
- 4:43Speaker 1: push the boundaries, push the boundaries, do things that are
- 4:45Speaker 1: flatly illegal. And then when someone says you could be
- 4:51Speaker 1: in trouble for this. We're gonna get you in trouble
- 4:53Speaker 1: for this. They go, oh, oh, rightly violated. Yeah, yeah,
- 4:59Speaker 1: the norms aren't being violated. You violated the norms, you did,
- 5:03Speaker 1: and then you paid the price for doing so. And
- 5:05Speaker 1: this is the theme of our discussions of all these
- 5:07Speaker 1: Minneapolis protests is yeah, once you have pushed the boundary,
- 5:11Speaker 1: pushed the boundary, pushed the boundary, every interaction with law
- 5:15Speaker 1: enforcement becomes exactly more pitched, becomes there's a greater chance
- 5:20Speaker 1: of someone making a mistake or having to defend themselves
- 5:23Speaker 1: against real threats. So this all just sort of gets
- 5:26Speaker 1: really pitched, and you can't pretend as if you have
- 5:30Speaker 1: done nothing to create the environment in which you're operating,
- 5:33Speaker 1: which is obviously what happened here.
- 5:36Speaker 2: That's right. So what's interesting about Don Lemon, and we'll
- 5:40Speaker 2: get to that clip in a second, is that he's
- 5:42Speaker 2: going to say I'm a journalist and I am just
- 5:45Speaker 2: covering this as a journalist. That didn't work for people
- 5:49Speaker 2: who said they were journalists on January sixth, and I
- 5:52Speaker 2: don't think it's going to work here because when you
- 5:55Speaker 2: break the law as a journalist, when you invade a
- 5:58Speaker 2: church during their service, stop them from praying, you should
- 6:02Speaker 2: be held accountable. And I think Don Lemon absolutely should
- 6:06Speaker 2: be here with all the protesters that were there that day.
- 6:09Speaker 1: What a career arc this guy is on my God,
- 6:12Speaker 1: Like he had a primetime show. I guess it was
- 6:15Speaker 1: late night, but primetime is show at CNN, and then
- 6:19Speaker 1: he which was famously off the rails, and then they
- 6:22Speaker 1: give him a mourning show, which Don Lemon is not
- 6:25Speaker 1: a morning It's not Mark at all.
- 6:26Speaker 4: Ye.
- 6:27Speaker 2: He's abusive and hateful and he has the Morning for
- 6:29Speaker 2: Sunny Mornings.
- 6:30Speaker 1: Yeah, and he was like nasty and bullying and at
- 6:34Speaker 1: times misogynist to his two female co hosts, Poppy Harley
- 6:37Speaker 1: and Caitlyn Collins. And then he almost started a show
- 6:41Speaker 1: on X with some sweetheart deal with all Elon, but
- 6:44Speaker 1: because he was unwilling to even like sit for one interview,
- 6:47Speaker 1: that didn't work out. And here we are live streaming
- 6:51Speaker 1: invasions of churches in Minneapolis.
- 6:55Speaker 2: Don Lemon, what you could have been?
- 6:57Speaker 1: I mean, look, he was always irresponsible and errand this
- 7:00Speaker 1: is just another latest example of it. Yeah. I do
- 7:04Speaker 1: think this is the kind of situation where look, the
- 7:09Speaker 1: Renee good shooting incident. A lot of people saw video
- 7:13Speaker 1: of that, and a lot of people differ from us
- 7:16Speaker 1: and came to the conclusion that this is this is
- 7:18Speaker 1: just horrible. I'm not giving benefit of the doubt to
- 7:22Speaker 1: the officer feeling concerned for his life. Yeah, I think
- 7:27Speaker 1: once a vehicle is coming at you, you can make
- 7:29Speaker 1: that decision. Agree completely, and you shouldn't be coming out
- 7:32Speaker 1: an officer, whether you intend to hit him or not. Right,
- 7:36Speaker 1: But people saw that and made a different conclusion. I
- 7:38Speaker 1: think reasonable people can disagree about that. No one's going
- 7:40Speaker 1: to see this video of the left basically taking what
- 7:44Speaker 1: could be a political win because the numbers on immigration
- 7:47Speaker 1: enforcement and Trump have changed. This constitutes the best way
- 7:52Speaker 1: they know how to screw that up as a political
- 7:55Speaker 1: advantage because this kind of thing people do not take
- 7:58Speaker 1: kindly to. There's also a video of them, uh ironically
- 8:02Speaker 1: pulling over citizens and asking them who they are because
- 8:06Speaker 1: they think their vehicles sort of look like Ice. You
- 8:08Speaker 1: don't have the right to do that. Unlike Ice, you
- 8:10Speaker 1: have no right to do that. And then there's one
- 8:13Speaker 1: of a couple tech bros inside a cafe getting accosted
- 8:17Speaker 1: by people because they just looked like, I guess non
- 8:20Speaker 1: being cried dude.
- 8:21Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I thought racial profiling was wrong, man, Catherine,
- 8:26Speaker 2: was I mistaken about that?
- 8:28Speaker 1: Apparently it's okay. But if those if those kind of
- 8:30Speaker 1: videos do break through and you have a Minneapolis twenty
- 8:33Speaker 1: twenty feeling or a DC your outdoors dining and you
- 8:36Speaker 1: have to raise your fist feeling going back to brunch
- 8:39Speaker 1: gets to normies by the way, it was brunch before
- 8:42Speaker 1: they've escalated to church. You can't even have church anymore,
- 8:45Speaker 1: no going back to church. That this could turn what
- 8:48Speaker 1: would otherwise be a political turn in their favor against them.
- 8:52Speaker 1: If it gets some sort.
- 8:53Speaker 2: Of play, let's roll that Don Lemon clip.
- 8:55Speaker 1: Let's see what this man has to say. I mean,
- 8:58Speaker 1: this is unacceptable, it's shameful.
- 9:00Speaker 5: It's shameful to interrupt a public gathering of Christians in worship.
- 9:07Speaker 1: But there are folks I have to take care of
- 9:10Speaker 1: my flock. Listen, we live in there's a constitution in
- 9:13Speaker 1: the First Amendment to freedom of speech and the freedom
- 9:15Speaker 1: to assemble and protest.
- 9:17Speaker 5: We're here to worship. We're here to worship Jesus because
- 9:19Speaker 5: that's the hope of these cities. That's the hope of
- 9:22Speaker 5: the world is Jesus Christ.
- 9:23Speaker 1: He's very respectful, but please don't push me.
- 9:25Speaker 5: Then we're here. We're here to worship Jesus. That's why
- 9:28Speaker 5: we're here. Okay, that's why we're here. That's what we're about.
- 9:31Speaker 5: Who do you think Jesus would be understanding we're about.
- 9:34Speaker 5: We're about straying to love that Jesus did try to
- 9:38Speaker 5: talk to them.
- 9:38Speaker 1: Ayone is willing to talk. Okay, Sickening truly handles that.
- 9:44Speaker 1: He handles that very well, by the way.
- 9:47Speaker 2: And the past you're talking from the church, Yeah.
- 9:49Speaker 1: That's the pastor. And another part of that that is
- 9:52Speaker 1: emblematic of this move is Don Lemon has entered the church.
- 9:57Speaker 1: They have forcibly disrupted this event, and he's like, talk
- 10:01Speaker 1: to them. They are yelling. Not just that they are yelling.
- 10:05Speaker 1: They have been the aggressors at every step of this process.
- 10:08Speaker 1: And that pastor puts an arm undn Lemon and he's like,
- 10:12Speaker 1: don't push me, don't push me. Right, the flopping is
- 10:15Speaker 1: out of control. Yeah, the flopping is out of control.
- 10:18Speaker 2: Italian soccer stars would be impressed.
- 10:20Speaker 1: I mean, just amazing stuff. But you know, I kind
- 10:24Speaker 1: of hope that Minneapolis stays cold enough that we do
- 10:27Speaker 1: not get a full scale burning, Yeah, as we did
- 10:30Speaker 1: in twenty twenty. That's the thing you and I are
- 10:32Speaker 1: hoping for.
- 10:33Speaker 6: That.
- 10:33Speaker 2: What are these protesters hoping for? They're hoping for that
- 10:36Speaker 2: full scale burning and timblewalls. Who will get two more.
- 10:40Speaker 2: In the next segment, he wants that he is not
- 10:44Speaker 2: bringing down the temperature at all.
- 10:46Speaker 1: He keeps ratcheting it up. It's out of.
- 10:49Speaker 2: Control that they're willing to burn their own city down,
- 10:52Speaker 2: and you and I are sitting here in not Minneapolis,
- 10:55Speaker 2: saying please don't, please don't.
- 10:57Speaker 1: By the way, there's a fantastic clip of Jacob Fried
- 11:00Speaker 1: talking about and I'll just act it out and describe it.
- 11:03Speaker 1: Talking about and he puts the words in other protesters' mouths,
- 11:06Speaker 1: but he says, we have citizens here, activists who want
- 11:13Speaker 1: our local police to fight ICE agents in the streets.
- 11:18Speaker 1: The chief of police is standing over his shoulder and
- 11:20Speaker 1: you should see his eyebrows. A seat to the moon.
- 11:24Speaker 1: He is like, no, no, no, no, no, no, we
- 11:26Speaker 1: will not be doing that, and you will not be
- 11:28Speaker 1: sending that message from an official podium. But that is
- 11:32Speaker 1: what he's doing. And I just think that is you
- 11:35Speaker 1: can look at the totality of the situation and you
- 11:38Speaker 1: can ask for ICE reforms, and you can say that
- 11:40Speaker 1: these things need to be trained better. And also no
- 11:44Speaker 1: to that, Yeah, no to that.
- 11:47Speaker 2: I mean you think the mayor of the city would
- 11:50Speaker 2: not want that. But here we are again saying why
- 11:53Speaker 2: do you want that? Why do you want violence.
- 11:55Speaker 1: In your streets?
- 11:56Speaker 2: What do you think you win? You think you're going
- 11:57Speaker 2: to win the midterms on this? And speaking of the
- 11:59Speaker 2: MIDI I absolutely think Republicans have to be showing this
- 12:05Speaker 2: church riot in ads. It's important that Americans see it.
- 12:09Speaker 2: Like you said, I don't think the media is going
- 12:11Speaker 2: to cover it. I don't think most Americans are going
- 12:13Speaker 2: to see it until it becomes front and center. And
- 12:15Speaker 2: if a rest's happen, I think those should be in
- 12:18Speaker 2: the ads too.
- 12:19Speaker 1: I do also think that talking about the actual people
- 12:24Speaker 1: who are being arrested in these operations is important, and
- 12:28Speaker 1: I wish that the administration was clearer about that on
- 12:30Speaker 1: a regular basis. There's another viral clip of a man
- 12:34Speaker 1: who is an ICE agent telling activist we are arresting
- 12:37Speaker 1: a man who is a child sex offender right now,
- 12:40Speaker 1: and you are whistling to warn him that's who you're protecting,
- 12:43Speaker 1: and then he just calls it insanity and drives away.
- 12:47Speaker 1: A lot of normal people would feel that way if
- 12:49Speaker 1: it were framed that way. It's not often framed that way,
- 12:52Speaker 1: and it's the administration's job to do a better job
- 12:56Speaker 1: of that and to make sure that people think it's
- 12:59Speaker 1: being done competently, because federal law should be enforced. As
- 13:03Speaker 1: you saw in my locality, like just a couple of
- 13:05Speaker 1: weeks ago, they released a guy didn't honor an ice
- 13:08Speaker 1: detainer and he murdered someone allegedly because he murdered someone
- 13:12Speaker 1: the next day. The next day, so there is a
- 13:15Speaker 1: human cost on that front too. Speaking of Virginia, we
- 13:19Speaker 1: have a new governor.
- 13:19Speaker 2: Yes, you do have a new governor. How is that
- 13:22Speaker 2: going for you?
- 13:23Speaker 1: Oh? Not great, Carol. Abigail Spamberger was sworn in in Virginia.
- 13:27Speaker 1: Democrats have full control in the state of Virginia of
- 13:31Speaker 1: the Senate and the House. And I don't say this lightly.
- 13:35Speaker 1: The Senate Democrat leadership in Virginia is out of their minds.
- 13:41Speaker 1: Louise Lucas you can look her up on X is
- 13:44Speaker 1: one of the members of leadership in that August body,
- 13:47Speaker 1: and she is the only Democrat I have seen come
- 13:51Speaker 1: close to touching Trump level trolling. And it's not that
- 13:55Speaker 1: I like it, but there's a part of me that's like,
- 13:58Speaker 1: she's she's given it college try here. Nonetheless, despite the craziness,
- 14:04Speaker 1: the Virginia voters wanted this. This is what they asked
- 14:07Speaker 1: for and this is what they want to get. Yeah,
- 14:10Speaker 1: let me tell you a couple of things that they
- 14:12Speaker 1: are working on and proposing right now. Taxpayer funded suggestions
- 14:16Speaker 1: for taxpayer funded housing assistance for local government employees only,
- 14:20Speaker 1: free education for illegal residents, expanding sales and retail taxes.
- 14:24Speaker 1: They are proposing taxes on investment funds. Of course that
- 14:29Speaker 1: sound you here as investments leaving Virginia. Can't we talking
- 14:32Speaker 1: about this is the last episode?
- 14:34Speaker 2: Like billionaires are the most mobile, but people who have
- 14:37Speaker 2: investments also mobile.
- 14:40Speaker 1: Well, and they also think these things through. And when
- 14:43Speaker 1: they hear this, they go, what should we do with
- 14:46Speaker 1: this money? Should we lay it right here so that
- 14:49Speaker 1: Democrats and Vertidy take it, or should we move it?
- 14:53Speaker 1: Another fun one is moving to ban gas power leaf blowers,
- 14:57Speaker 1: and then they're also going to tax anything you have
- 15:00Speaker 1: that's an electric leaf flower it's good. You can't can't
- 15:05Speaker 1: can't leaf flow. No more leaf flowing in Virginia is
- 15:09Speaker 1: pretty impressive. Oh. Also, immediately, the first thing Spamberger did
- 15:15Speaker 1: was eliminate the youngkin Era Agreement or requirement that localities
- 15:20Speaker 1: cooperate with ICE.
- 15:21Speaker 2: So yes, obviously that's the most important thing on the agenda,
- 15:25Speaker 2: number one, number one.
- 15:27Speaker 1: So yeah, the onslaught is going to be pretty serious.
- 15:30Speaker 1: And you know, elections have consequences. They do, they do.
- 15:36Speaker 2: You know what I'll say, I'll say that Florida is
- 15:38Speaker 2: waiting for you. My locality just reduced our sales tax.
- 15:44Speaker 2: I've never had that happen before my life. In my life,
- 15:47Speaker 2: I've never had the county say hey, we're going to
- 15:49Speaker 2: reduce their sales tax. It's only by a penny or two,
- 15:53Speaker 2: but like, come on, that has never happened to me.
- 15:56Speaker 1: I don't even know what I was, like, what is this?
- 15:58Speaker 1: They're making it lower? Meanwhile, meanwhile, my area in.
- 16:02Speaker 3: A purple county, so you know, Meanwhile, our area just
- 16:05Speaker 3: raised takeout taxes and they're also going to on the
- 16:11Speaker 3: state level, they're attempting to impose taxes on all online retailing.
- 16:17Speaker 1: Man affordability Carol, it feels great.
- 16:22Speaker 2: I feel like you could get used to the heat.
- 16:23Speaker 1: Come on now, man, I mean that part's not an
- 16:26Speaker 1: issue for me.
- 16:28Speaker 2: All Right, We're going to take a short break and
- 16:30Speaker 2: come back with a little in case you missed it
- 16:32Speaker 2: about Kamala Harris, be right back. We are back on normally,
- 16:39Speaker 2: and Kamala Harris, she is just.
- 16:42Speaker 1: Still frequently in the news.
- 16:43Speaker 2: I saw a clip of Kris Wisher telling a story
- 16:47Speaker 2: about Kamala maybe a week ago, and I was like, Oh,
- 16:50Speaker 2: if something else happens with Kamala, will save this.
- 16:53Speaker 1: Clip for that.
- 16:53Speaker 2: But and here we are, because we're going to get
- 16:55Speaker 2: into what Josh Shapiro, Governor of Pennsylvania, says he was
- 17:00Speaker 2: asked during his VP vetting process. And it's a good one.
- 17:04Speaker 2: But let's start with this Kara Swisher clip about Kamala.
- 17:10Speaker 6: I just had an experience with Kamala Harris where we
- 17:12Speaker 6: were joking about something backstage about Robert Kennedy Junior. It
- 17:17Speaker 6: was specifically around circumcision and autism, the link he was
- 17:21Speaker 6: making a link which is not there. And then when
- 17:23Speaker 6: I got on stage and mentioned it, she looked at
- 17:25Speaker 6: me dead and said.
- 17:26Speaker 1: People will die because of what they're doing. I can't
- 17:30Speaker 1: laugh about that.
- 17:30Speaker 6: I'm sorry, And she had just laughed about it, and
- 17:33Speaker 6: then she went into this sort of high handed kind
- 17:35Speaker 6: of thing where she was like yelling at me.
- 17:37Speaker 1: Kara, it's personal for me.
- 17:39Speaker 6: I was like, I'm going to kill you.
- 17:41Speaker 1: I literally can't believe you just did that. I sometimes
- 17:44Speaker 1: get the sense that she doesn't realize her political career
- 17:46Speaker 1: is over. I was like, where's the person backstage? You
- 17:48Speaker 1: just had a very insightful comment about this. What a faker,
- 17:52Speaker 1: what a fraud. And we knew this.
- 17:54Speaker 2: We knew this about Kamala Harris, and the Kara Swishers
- 17:57Speaker 2: of the world assured us that wasn't so. And the
- 17:59Speaker 2: fact that she's telling the story now and not during
- 18:02Speaker 2: the campaign is very very telling. But this is who
- 18:05Speaker 2: Kamala Harris was. She was one person behind the scenes
- 18:08Speaker 2: and another person in front of an audience. And it
- 18:11Speaker 2: was obvious. It was obvious it.
- 18:13Speaker 1: Never worked, dude. Yeah, No, that's the thing. What Kara
- 18:17Speaker 1: felt in that switch is what everyone felt watching all
- 18:20Speaker 1: the time. They knew that whatever they were getting was
- 18:24Speaker 1: some weird like attempt at being a human that was
- 18:28Speaker 1: not real. And for all as we've said many times
- 18:31Speaker 1: for all of Donald Trump's weirdness, and there's a lot.
- 18:35Speaker 1: He is Donald Trump, right, Yeah, Kamala not the same deal.
- 18:40Speaker 1: And this reminds me. Also, do you remember when Eugene Daniels,
- 18:44Speaker 1: who's the head of the White House Correspondence Association, interviewed
- 18:47Speaker 1: her in one forum and it was like a very
- 18:49Speaker 1: friendly forums black journalists and she was being interviewed by YAE.
- 18:53Speaker 1: He was among them. And if you watch the live
- 18:55Speaker 1: stream when it ends, the look that Eugene Daniels gives
- 18:59Speaker 1: to his fellow panel list is like, oh my gosh,
- 19:02Speaker 1: I can't believe this person is the nominee. Yeah, y'all
- 19:05Speaker 1: all knew it. Y'all all knew. Everyone knew. Everyone knew.
- 19:08Speaker 2: They kept it a secret talk about something else everyone knew.
- 19:13Speaker 1: It turns out that Josh.
- 19:14Speaker 2: Shapiro was too Jewish to be the vice presidential nominee
- 19:19Speaker 2: for Kamala Harris. We kind of knew that, and we'll
- 19:21Speaker 2: get a little bit more into that. But also they
- 19:24Speaker 2: openly told him that he's too poor, Like yes, it's like, wow,
- 19:30Speaker 2: I gotta tell you, though you know, normally it's like
- 19:33Speaker 2: Jewish and too rich. That goes in in. You know,
- 19:36Speaker 2: this is very interesting. I'll read you a little clip
- 19:38Speaker 2: from the New York Times. Shapiro eventually returned to Pennsylvania
- 19:42Speaker 2: with his mind made up, though not before we misspoke
- 19:44Speaker 2: with him again, he writes, and suggested that the role
- 19:46Speaker 2: of vice president might be a financial burden for him
- 19:49Speaker 2: and his wife. Shapiro's financial vetting showed that he didn't
- 19:52Speaker 2: have much money, and the vice presidency would require Lori
- 19:55Speaker 2: to buy a new wardrobe and pay the costs for
- 19:57Speaker 2: second lady level hair and makeup, even as the couple
- 20:00Speaker 2: would be required to pay for food and entertainment at
- 20:03Speaker 2: the vice president's residence. Shapiro said he was taken aback.
- 20:06Speaker 2: Are you trying to convince me not to do this here?
- 20:08Speaker 2: Paul's asking remisresponded that she just wanted him to be
- 20:12Speaker 2: sure this was something he wanted. In the end, Shapiro wrote,
- 20:15Speaker 2: he realized that it was not.
- 20:17Speaker 1: So. This is what we said about Shapiro at the time,
- 20:20Speaker 1: is that it read like he didn't want to be
- 20:23Speaker 1: part of this. He did not want to hitch himself
- 20:25Speaker 1: to this that star. Yeah, and he was right, but
- 20:30Speaker 1: they also didn't want him. And here's why Kamala Harris
- 20:35Speaker 1: would have made an absolutely awful president. The reason they're
- 20:38Speaker 1: telling him he's too poor or too Jewish is because
- 20:41Speaker 1: they want him to remove himself from the process because
- 20:44Speaker 1: they are too cowardly to do it themselves exactly.
- 20:48Speaker 2: But it's funny because there's something gratifying about the fact
- 20:52Speaker 2: that she rejected Josh Shapiro and then picked Tim. I'm
- 20:55Speaker 2: a man I swear walls. It's like this, you got
- 20:58Speaker 2: what you deserved.
- 20:59Speaker 1: You got that guy. Tim Moles doesn't have any money,
- 21:02Speaker 1: so it gives the lot. But he was just poor,
- 21:05Speaker 1: not poor and Jewish. Oh, yes, that's true. That's true.
- 21:08Speaker 1: By the way, this all comes from uh Or. This
- 21:11Speaker 1: new news cycle comes from Shapiro's new book, which is
- 21:14Speaker 1: called I Believe, Where We Keep the Light. I love
- 21:17Speaker 1: political memoirs. They just like sort of switch around light
- 21:20Speaker 1: and hope and make up new Like there's at somewhere
- 21:24Speaker 1: that's full of different memoir names. George W. Bush was
- 21:28Speaker 1: a charge to keep. Yes, that's a pretty good one,
- 21:31Speaker 1: is it. I do think, I do think against my
- 21:35Speaker 1: own interests. Audacity of hope was kind of a catchy
- 21:37Speaker 1: phrase that doesn't make sense though. Audacity of hope. That's
- 21:41Speaker 1: why it's that's why it's perfect for black Obama actually
- 21:47Speaker 1: makes sense. But no, this is true. In the book,
- 21:51Speaker 1: the Governor is measured in describing his interactions with Miss
- 21:54Speaker 1: Harris herself. The New York Times says, but mister Shapiro,
- 21:56Speaker 1: who is Jewish, details a contentious vetting process in which
- 21:59Speaker 1: Miss harris Is team focused intensely on his views on Israel,
- 22:03Speaker 1: so much so that at one point, he wrote, he
- 22:05Speaker 1: was asked if he had ever been an agent of
- 22:07Speaker 1: the Israeli government.
- 22:09Speaker 2: It's so good and that he goes on, had I
- 22:11Speaker 2: been a double agent for Israel? Wrote mister Shapiro, describing
- 22:14Speaker 2: his incredulous response to a last minute question from the
- 22:16Speaker 2: vetting team. He responded that the question was offensive, he wrote,
- 22:19Speaker 2: and was told, well, we have to ask have you
- 22:22Speaker 2: ever communicated with an undercover agent of Israel? The questioner,
- 22:25Speaker 2: Dana Remis, a former White House Council continued, according to
- 22:28Speaker 2: mister Shapiro, who recounted, if they were undercover, I responded,
- 22:32Speaker 2: how the hell would I know?
- 22:33Speaker 1: It's so good, that's fantastic. Are you aware of the
- 22:37Speaker 1: definition of undercover? Yeah?
- 22:40Speaker 2: If I knew, then they wouldn't be undercover. I you know,
- 22:44Speaker 2: Shapiro goes on to campaign for Kamala Harris. And that's
- 22:48Speaker 2: the thing about Democrats is that they will take this
- 22:51Speaker 2: and still go in campaign. I shouldn't say just Democrats,
- 22:54Speaker 2: Republicans do it too. There's so many lines where I'm like,
- 22:58Speaker 2: I don't care if I'm in ninety five percent agreement
- 23:01Speaker 2: with this person, I'm not supporting them if they ask
- 23:04Speaker 2: me if I'm an agent for Israel. And again, Republicans
- 23:08Speaker 2: absolutely do it too. I can think of some examples
- 23:10Speaker 2: of Donald Trump making comments to people who ended up campaigning,
- 23:14Speaker 2: and I personally couldn't do it, couldn't do it. I
- 23:17Speaker 2: would just be like, all right, I'm out of political
- 23:19Speaker 2: life for everyone.
- 23:19Speaker 1: I don't care.
- 23:20Speaker 2: I'm out.
- 23:20Speaker 1: That's why we don't run for office exactly.
- 23:23Speaker 2: I will go be a greeter at my local target
- 23:26Speaker 2: before I do this shit.
- 23:28Speaker 1: Understood. Same here, We're going.
- 23:30Speaker 2: To take a short break and come back with a
- 23:32Speaker 2: feel good story because there's been you know, a lot
- 23:34Speaker 2: of negativity here, so we'll be right back. We are
- 23:41Speaker 2: back with a story of a YouTuber who has decided
- 23:44Speaker 2: to take a break from the youtubing to better himself
- 23:47Speaker 2: and really improve his knowledge. His name is Kai seen It.
- 23:52Speaker 2: I think I'm saying that correctly, and he has gone
- 23:56Speaker 2: viral for sharing videos of himself reading a book I
- 24:00Speaker 2: believe the book is Atomic Habits, and then looking up
- 24:03Speaker 2: words that he doesn't know. Let's roll that clip.
- 24:06Speaker 7: Spontaneous, spontaneit, spontaneity.
- 24:10Speaker 4: How do I pronounce that?
- 24:15Speaker 7: Spawn spontaneity, spawn spawn two.
- 24:32Speaker 4: Oftentimes when I don't know what a word is pronounced,
- 24:35Speaker 4: I want to I get to look at how it's pronounced, it,
- 24:39Speaker 4: what it even means. Spontaneity, spontaneity, the condition of being spontaneous, spontaneity, spontaneity, spontaneity, spontaneity,
- 24:51Speaker 4: and spontaneity, spontaneity of life. Hardly such questions set up
- 24:56Speaker 4: a false what does that mean?
- 25:04Speaker 7: Uh?
- 25:09Speaker 1: Dichotomy? Dichotomy a false dicomedy?
- 25:12Speaker 4: What does that mean? A dicomedy a division or contrast
- 25:17Speaker 4: between two things that are or represented as being opposed
- 25:20Speaker 4: or entirely different. Hmm, repeated branching into two egs, dicomedy.
- 25:29Speaker 1: It's wonderful.
- 25:30Speaker 2: I love seeing that you are, Especially if you learn
- 25:35Speaker 2: words while you're reading them, you may mispronounce them. And
- 25:38Speaker 2: I've always seen that as a sign of intelligence and
- 25:40Speaker 2: not stupidity like it's considered in I feel like our culture,
- 25:45Speaker 2: we'll just see we see it as somebody dumb when
- 25:48Speaker 2: they mispronounce a word, but that they likely learn that
- 25:51Speaker 2: word by reading.
- 25:54Speaker 1: It's a good thing.
- 25:54Speaker 2: I showed that clip to my kids. I was like,
- 25:56Speaker 2: I love this. I love that this guy is bettering
- 26:00Speaker 2: himself reading a book, challenging himself, looking up wards. He
- 26:04Speaker 2: doesn't know.
- 26:05Speaker 1: Love all of that.
- 26:06Speaker 2: Please do it, you know, I told my kids, as
- 26:08Speaker 2: you get older, I want you to read challenging books
- 26:10Speaker 2: that you don't know all the words, and then yeah,
- 26:12Speaker 2: go look them up, go find out how they're pronounced.
- 26:15Speaker 1: Do it well. It's funny. I was writing a piece
- 26:19Speaker 1: for National Reviews two fifty issue about literacy, and I
- 26:24Speaker 1: was talking about how there is this trend now where
- 26:27Speaker 1: there are a few influencers whose thing is that they
- 26:31Speaker 1: read or they are learning to read. There's one guy
- 26:33Speaker 1: named Oliver James who was thirty two when the pandemic
- 26:37Speaker 1: began and realized, like, I can't even read a restaurant menu.
- 26:39Speaker 1: I was left behind in school. I fell through the
- 26:41Speaker 1: cracks and so he started to read on TikTok and
- 26:45Speaker 1: taught himself to read, moving up amazing from picture books
- 26:48Speaker 1: to Charlotte's Webb. He's now reading C. S. Lewis. I mean,
- 26:51Speaker 1: it's amazing. There's another guy called Chris Kinda Reads, who
- 26:55Speaker 1: is a young man who was a reader but had
- 26:59Speaker 1: never read classics. So he starts reading classics. Penguin Classics
- 27:03Speaker 1: sends him an entire library. He love it. He's like,
- 27:06Speaker 1: East of Eden is great, guys, you gotta get into it.
- 27:09Speaker 1: So I love the idea of things that are not
- 27:12Speaker 1: part of the dopamine hit attention economy, the old good
- 27:15Speaker 1: things becoming a trend. That is what we want as
- 27:19Speaker 1: a culture is people like this leading millions of young
- 27:22Speaker 1: people to say, perhaps I should read a book.
- 27:26Speaker 2: Yep. And anybody mocking these people is no friend of mine.
- 27:30Speaker 2: I just anybody mocking somebody trying to better themselves at
- 27:33Speaker 2: whatever age. If you realize at thirty that you're not
- 27:36Speaker 2: a great reader, and you set out to become a
- 27:38Speaker 2: better reader, good for you. Good for you.
- 27:40Speaker 1: It's like people who make fun of people who go
- 27:42Speaker 1: to the gym for the first time, right, they're new
- 27:45Speaker 1: to it. Yeah, they are learning. Yeah, I hate this
- 27:47Speaker 1: is what we should celebrate and I love to see it.
- 27:50Speaker 1: There is nothing like so close to magic as when
- 27:54Speaker 1: I saw my kids click and learn to read. I mean,
- 27:57Speaker 1: it is an amazing thing to see it get so
- 28:00Speaker 1: much joy out of it while they're doing it that
- 28:02Speaker 1: you can see it's really cool.
- 28:04Speaker 2: I love it.
- 28:05Speaker 1: Let's have more of that please.
