Speaker 1: your hosts me Gia, Judice.
• 0:06
Speaker 2: Daisy Kent, and Jennifer Fessler. Hi, guys, I am Jen Bessler,
• 0:14
Speaker 2: joined by Daisy Kent and Joan Vasso's and we are
• 0:18
Speaker 2: Dirty Rush today. We are here to talk all things
• 0:23
Speaker 2: dorm rooms. So how do we get from tapestries and
• 0:27
Speaker 2: beer bottles to tiny mansions? It is over the top.
• 0:32
Speaker 2: We need to know how this happened. We need to
• 0:35
Speaker 2: know why this happened. We need to know the dirty,
• 0:38
Speaker 2: dirty details. So Daisy, Joan, what do you think about
• 0:43
Speaker 2: what is going on? I don't know, Daisy, You're closer
• 0:45
Speaker 2: to this than maybe than Jonah and I are. Was
• 0:48
Speaker 2: this going on when you were back in a dorm?
• 0:51
Speaker 3: I feel like it definitely was. I don't know if
• 0:53
Speaker 3: there were like interior designers doing it, but like some
• 0:56
Speaker 3: girls on my floor, they're like everything was like totally
• 1:00
Speaker 3: decked out, like their pillows had like their initials on it.
• 1:03
Speaker 3: Like and I remember I just got to college and
• 1:06
Speaker 3: we had like a bedspread and they brought all my
• 1:08
Speaker 3: clothes and then we went after we saw my dorm room,
• 1:11
Speaker 3: then me and my parents went and like looked around
• 1:13
Speaker 3: and me and my roommate like color, like coated it.
• 1:17
Speaker 2: But we didn't go like super all out like I think.
• 1:19
Speaker 3: Our dorm room was still really cute, but it wasn't
• 1:21
Speaker 3: like anything like super crazy.
• 1:24
Speaker 2: I mean that was definitely j What was your experience
• 1:27
Speaker 2: that was not mine?
• 1:28
  Speaker 4: Not at all?
• 1:28
Speaker 5: I want to do over. First of all, because I
• 1:30
Speaker 5: showed up with my comforter and all my clothes. I
• 1:33
Speaker 5: didn't know my roommate like you. We may have had
• 1:36
Speaker 5: like one chat on the phone. It's not like now
• 1:38
Speaker 5: where you just link up on social media and it's
• 1:40
Speaker 5: so easy to get to know each other and each
• 1:42
Speaker 5: actually each other's style really because you can see from
• 1:44
Speaker 5: their instagram like what kind of person they are or
• 1:47
Speaker 5: what if they're going to match your style, Like I remember,
• 1:49
Speaker 5: I just showed up with like bare minimum. But I'm
• 1:52
Speaker 5: also thinking about my daughters. I moved two daughters and
• 1:54
Speaker 5: two sons into dorms, and I mean, you know, they're
• 1:57
Speaker 5: in their thirties, so that wasn't that that long ago,
• 2:00
Speaker 5: and it wasn't this big of a deal. It was bigger,
• 2:03
Speaker 5: but not this big.
• 2:04
Speaker 2: When I moved in. My first school was Bosson University.
• 2:07
Speaker 2: Then I transferred to UT I don't think my parents
• 2:09
Speaker 2: even slowed down when they threw me out of that.
• 2:11
  Speaker 2: I don't remember that setting up. I don't remember, like
• 2:16
  Speaker 2: so I when I'm I did it for Rachel. I
• 2:18
Speaker 2: don't know that we hired Harry designer. It was right
• 2:21
Speaker 2: after COVID, so she was able to get her own room.
• 2:22
Speaker 2: But I remember doing They had that wall they just
• 2:25
Speaker 2: gotten that wallpaper that peel and stick, and I'm like, so, wait,
• 2:30
Speaker 2: you want me to put wallpapers wallpaper up on these bricks.
• 2:34
Speaker 2: And I was okay, whatever, Yeah, I did the best
• 2:37
Speaker 2: I could. I don't Her room was adorable. It did
• 2:40
Speaker 2: not look like what we are seeing now.
• 2:42
Speaker 3: Though, Oh my gosh, I never of that putting wallpaper
• 2:46
  Speaker 3: over the bricks.
• 2:46
  Speaker 2: That's all thet It's a great idea, I know, I know,
• 2:50
Speaker 2: was big. Well, we have our first guest here, you guys,
• 2:54
Speaker 2: and I'm very excited to talk to her. So let
• 2:57
Speaker 2: us please bring in Amy Joyce.
• 3:00
Speaker 3: I can already tell you're just so stylish.
• 3:02
Speaker 2: Yeah, seeking that too, Dasy.
• 3:05
Speaker 4: We are literally in the middle of Mexico, so getting
• 3:07
Speaker 4: Wi FI is just it's a whole you know.
• 3:10
Speaker 6: So, yeah, how are you.
• 3:12
Speaker 2: We're well, thank you so much for joining us.
• 3:14
Speaker 5: Yeah, you must be on vacation. Thank you for being here.
• 3:19
Speaker 6: Well, I come here to source for the business.
• 3:22
Speaker 4: Oh there are some incredible like artists and artisans and just.
• 3:27
Speaker 6: All sorts of things.
• 3:28
Speaker 2: Amy, I'm sorry, I'm gonna interrupt. You come to you
• 3:31
Speaker 2: go to Mexico to source for dorm rooms?
• 3:34
Speaker 4: No, so I am my Amy Choice Designs is a
• 3:37
Speaker 4: full service interior design firm. So that is like we
• 3:40
Speaker 4: specialize in luxury remodels, new construction, you know. Yes, so
• 3:48
Speaker 4: I source for all sorts of you know projects obviously
• 3:51
Speaker 4: that we have going on, and this particular dorm room
• 3:55
  Speaker 4: obviously was.
• 3:56
Speaker 6: It was. It was a whole thing. It was amazing.
• 4:01
Speaker 4: It was one of the It was kind of honestly
• 4:03
Speaker 4: like a one off project. The client that asked me
• 4:07
Speaker 4: to do it, their daughter was going off to school.
• 4:09
Speaker 4: It's their first child to lead the house. She actually
• 4:13
Speaker 4: has impeccable taste them on and she pretty much just
• 4:16
Speaker 4: called me and she was like I can't handle this,
• 4:18
Speaker 4: Like I need you to come up with the design, implement,
• 4:23
Speaker 4: bring your team to install, do all the things. So
• 4:27
Speaker 4: it was a start to finish and it was somewhat
• 4:29
Speaker 4: fast and furious. We started on this about five and
• 4:33
Speaker 4: a half weeks before we actually installed, which is kind
• 4:35
Speaker 4: of everything in that room was completely custom.
• 4:41
Speaker 2: Was this was the first time that you did this.
• 4:43
Speaker 6: That was the first time I had done it.
• 4:44
Speaker 4: I had been pushing the dorm design for a few months.
• 4:48
Speaker 6: I knew also that.
• 4:49
Speaker 4: I was going to be very intentional with the projects
• 4:51
Speaker 4: that I took on. Truthfully, a lot of people just
• 4:54
Speaker 4: don't know what this, you know, cost. I want to
• 4:59
Speaker 4: make sure it's on brain. And for me, this was
• 5:03
Speaker 4: just a lot of fun because they clearly love color
• 5:06
Speaker 4: and patterns, and their daughter was just I mean, she had,
• 5:11
Speaker 4: you know, some influence. So to me, my gift is
• 5:15
Speaker 4: being able to spend time with the client and really
• 5:18
Speaker 4: being able to kind of pull some things right, like
• 5:20
Speaker 4: just as a designer, when I'm meeting someone in their
• 5:22
Speaker 4: home and asking the questions and I can see how
• 5:26
Speaker 4: their space operates, you know, do they have children, pets,
• 5:30
Speaker 4: you know, all the things. And with this it was
• 5:31
Speaker 4: a little bit different because I didn't have any of that,
• 5:34
Speaker 4: so everything was pretty much virtual.
• 5:35
Speaker 6: I mean I didn't even actually meet this lady until
• 5:37
Speaker 6: we installed the day she right.
• 5:42
Speaker 4: Now we have mutual friends, and she knows some of
• 5:45
Speaker 4: my other clients you know, that.
• 5:47
  Speaker 6: We've worked with.
• 5:48
Speaker 4: But she just's so much about trusts and just you know,
• 5:52
Speaker 4: for me, like the design and the execution of the design,
• 5:57
Speaker 4: but also getting people to understand just visually. You know,
• 6:00
Speaker 4: we create like design boards where we're very specific, this
• 6:04
Speaker 4: is what's going here. We do AutoCAD renderings.
• 6:07
Speaker 2: Oh my god, Amy, did any of this seem I'm
• 6:11
Speaker 2: sorry to interrupt you, but does any of this seem
• 6:13
Speaker 2: for a dorm room? For you as a design er?
• 6:16
Speaker 2: Does it feel a little over the top. I don't
• 6:18
Speaker 2: know if you have, if you went you were ever
• 6:21
Speaker 2: in a dorm, if you went to the school where
• 6:23
Speaker 2: you did any of this, clearly you have the taste
• 6:25
Speaker 2: for it. But does any of this feel to you?
• 6:26
Speaker 2: And someone calls you and says, listen, design it, do
• 6:30
Speaker 2: cad whatever it's called you just said, and all of
• 6:33
Speaker 2: it custom it? Like, are you like, what are you
• 6:37
  Speaker 2: talking about?
• 6:38
Speaker 4: Probably not, because I'm very much a maximalus anyways, So
• 6:41
Speaker 4: and truthfully, you know, I've been in this industry for
• 6:45
Speaker 4: thirteen years. So the projects that have come my way,
• 6:49
Speaker 4: it's sometimes it's like, well, you know, my girls were
• 6:53
Speaker 4: with me. I have two daughters, and they both were like,
• 6:55
Speaker 4: is this what our dorm is gonna look like?
• 6:57
Speaker 2: When lucky girls that?
• 6:59
Speaker 5: Yeah, I looked. I did a little research on this,
• 7:03
Speaker 5: and I found out that it's a fourteen billion dollars
• 7:08
Speaker 5: a year industry, so you know, people are spending money
• 7:12
Speaker 5: on this, but normally it's door.
• 7:13
Speaker 2: I would think more of it as dormified than hiring
• 7:16
Speaker 2: an actual decorator. Total custom. I mean, I it seems
• 7:21
Speaker 2: extravagant to me, and I honestly it's you did an
• 7:25
Speaker 2: unbelievable job, but I don't know how popular it's becoming
• 7:28
Speaker 2: to do that. And did it seem at first crazy
• 7:30
Speaker 2: to you at all? Just to get get the dorm room?
• 7:33
Speaker 2: I don't mean decorating, no, No.
• 7:35
Speaker 4: I think the part that was a little bit overwhelming
• 7:38
Speaker 4: was that I was never able to get into that
• 7:40
Speaker 4: space before. It's all so I'm relying on college kids
• 7:45
Speaker 4: that are running this off canthus dorm situation to get
• 7:48
Speaker 4: me measurements. My client never even solved the space before
• 7:53
Speaker 4: we insolved, so there was a lot of I mean,
• 7:56
Speaker 4: we had to do some kind of deep diving. We
• 7:58
Speaker 4: found some parents that have had the exact layout, and
• 8:02
Speaker 4: I was able to reach out to people and say,
• 8:03
Speaker 4: can you send me some pictures like you know, I mean,
• 8:06
Speaker 4: I've been doing this long enough that I know, you know,
• 8:09
Speaker 4: standard sizes for doors and windows, and so we're able
• 8:12
Speaker 4: to come up you know, like a lot of the measurements.
• 8:13
Speaker 4: But it was that that part was probably the most frustrating.
• 8:18
Speaker 4: And then the day of the install because she was
• 8:22
Speaker 4: on the seventeenth floor, so it was the penthouse of
• 8:26
Speaker 4: the dorm, and we were only to go up the elevator.
• 8:30
Speaker 4: They would not allow us to go back down. So
• 8:32
Speaker 4: I'm not only because I live in Dallas and this
• 8:36
Speaker 4: project was an awesome I not only had my wallpaper
• 8:39
Speaker 4: installers there, my moving company that had come to pick
• 8:42
Speaker 4: everything up, you know, because we had when you look
• 8:45
Speaker 4: at that space, the headboard was custom, the hutch, the
• 8:50
Speaker 4: all of it, right.
• 8:51
Speaker 6: So it's coming to me.
• 8:52
Speaker 4: I had to have people come pick it up, bring it,
• 8:54
Speaker 4: you know, to the university. I had my installer who
• 8:57
Speaker 4: hangs things, and I mean that part was very chaotic.
• 9:01
Speaker 2: I mean, I'm sure for you it was really fun.
• 9:03
Speaker 2: I'm trying to picture saying to my daughter, Okay, we're
• 9:05
Speaker 2: going to hire a decorator. I mean, I just that
• 9:07
Speaker 2: part for you. And obviously you're you were you were
• 9:11
Speaker 2: a master at it, but it was it was it
• 9:13
Speaker 2: U t this school. Yes, so I graduated from Texas.
• 9:17
Speaker 2: I promise you, my friend. This is the nicest storm
• 9:20
Speaker 2: room anyone at the University of Texas has ever had.
• 9:38
Speaker 5: I'm really like so shocked by that you actually wallpapered
• 9:42
  Speaker 5: the walls, because that's such a like I mean, that's
• 9:45
Speaker 5: first of all, there's cinderblock. I'm assuming because at least
• 9:47
Speaker 5: that's what they used to be when I was in college.
• 9:49
Speaker 5: And I'm wondering, like that is a huge job. And
• 9:52
Speaker 5: I look at like some of the stuff you did,
• 9:54
Speaker 5: and she can take this to her next place that
• 9:56
Speaker 5: she lives, so she can take that headboard in the
• 9:59
Speaker 5: chair that match like the curtains, but she can't take
• 10:02
Speaker 5: stor she can't take that hutch. You're not gonna have
• 10:04
Speaker 5: the same size desk, You're not taking the wallpaper. So
• 10:06
Speaker 5: this is like a huge expense of only certain things
• 10:11
Speaker 5: that can be reused. I mean that just sounds like
• 10:14
Speaker 5: so excessive to me. I can't imagine. I would have
• 10:17
Speaker 5: loved to have done that for my daughter, but I'm
• 10:19
Speaker 5: not sure if I would have.
• 10:21
Speaker 4: I think too one thing, just what I've seen the feedback,
• 10:25
Speaker 4: you know, from even just the posting of this project, right,
• 10:30
Speaker 4: and you know, there are some people you know that
• 10:32
Speaker 4: feel that way, but there are also a lot of
• 10:33
Speaker 4: people that you know, and this family is incredible. There
• 10:37
Speaker 4: was one moment in the day when we were installing
• 10:39
Speaker 4: and they the dad was there and he was like, hey,
• 10:42
Speaker 4: let's have let's have a family hug, like because both
• 10:45
Speaker 4: siblings were there for her, and I just kind of
• 10:48
Speaker 4: stood there and I was like, you know, they have
• 10:50
Speaker 4: the means and this family it is important to them
• 10:52
Speaker 4: that their daughter feels and literally is an extension of
• 10:55
Speaker 4: their home. Because if you saw their home and it's
• 10:57
Speaker 4: so similar to you know, what we were able to
• 11:01
Speaker 4: do in the space, you know it.
• 11:03
Speaker 6: Might not be for everyone.
• 11:04
Speaker 4: But at the same time, like I know, for me
• 11:07
Speaker 4: as a designer, my spaces are not for everyone, these
• 11:11
Speaker 4: services are not, you know, for everyone.
• 11:14
  Speaker 6: I think there's.
• 11:14
Speaker 4: Ways, you know, to kind of give people, you know,
• 11:17
  Speaker 4: tricks and trades.
• 11:18
Speaker 6: Even with the wallpaper it was peeling stick.
• 11:21
Speaker 2: I told them about that. I did that for my daughters.
• 11:23
Speaker 2: It did not look like that. It was one little
• 11:26
Speaker 2: wall and then I told her to leave me alone.
• 11:28
Speaker 2: I was leaving. I'll see you at Thanksgiving. Listen, I beg,
• 11:33
Speaker 2: you got a lot of business from this my friend. Yeah,
• 11:35
Speaker 2: that's what I'm wondering too, left and right.
• 11:38
Speaker 4: Yeah, and you know, I mean again, I think for me,
• 11:40
Speaker 4: it's like really kind of getting into you know, who
• 11:43
Speaker 4: the client is what, and I mean this girl is.
• 11:45
  Speaker 6: She's so sweet.
• 11:46
Speaker 4: And it's a three bedroom, so she had you know,
• 11:48
Speaker 4: two other roommates that were and they were.
• 11:51
Speaker 6: You know, excited for her.
• 11:52
Speaker 4: We even got to do some extension, like in the
• 11:54
Speaker 4: living room and you know, we hung art. We had
• 11:56
Speaker 4: all sorts of fun accessories. I love to customize anything,
• 11:59
Speaker 4: so I paint. I brought all sorts of customized you
• 12:02
Speaker 4: know things just specific you know, for her, you know,
• 12:06
Speaker 4: like knowing who she is, what she likes, you know,
• 12:09
Speaker 4: all the things. So yeah, it was definitely I just
• 12:13
Speaker 4: keep thinking, like fast and furious.
• 12:15
Speaker 2: This is a freshman year.
• 12:17
Speaker 6: Yeah, it's our freshman year. Yes, yeah, have a.
• 12:19
Speaker 3: Roommate And was her roommate's like side like decorated too, so.
• 12:24
Speaker 4: She doesn't have a roommate in her actual room there's
• 12:26
Speaker 4: three other like there's three bedrooms total.
• 12:29
Speaker 6: It's kind of cool.
• 12:30
Speaker 4: I actually left there, and it's so great for me
• 12:33
Speaker 4: having my kids there watching this too, because one we're
• 12:35
Speaker 4: doing problem solving and you know.
• 12:36
Speaker 6: They love being around these college girls.
• 12:39
Speaker 4: But the rooms were like so happy for her and
• 12:42
Speaker 4: just like excited, like this is.
• 12:44
Speaker 6: Such a cool you know space.
• 12:45
Speaker 4: I mean, there's spaces were great, you know, but obviously
• 12:50
Speaker 4: we went over the top.
• 12:52
Speaker 2: Yeah, it's good for her.
• 12:53
Speaker 5: I have a question, though, do do you ever see
• 12:57
Speaker 5: the boys rooms getting decorated really nice? Like I had
• 13:00
Speaker 5: two sons who went to college, I had two daughters.
• 13:02
Speaker 5: The daughter's rooms were always really pretty, you know, but
• 13:04
Speaker 5: we I feel like the guys are being left out here.
• 13:08
Speaker 2: No way my son would be like get was like
• 13:11
Speaker 2: thanks mom and see ya.
• 13:13
Speaker 5: Oh yeah. I feel like they like would run a
• 13:15
Speaker 5: sofa or you know, some something comfort, some comfort from
• 13:18
Speaker 5: homes that have reached out because we've had so much response.
• 13:23
Speaker 6: So I basically, you know, I did like a.
• 13:25
Speaker 4: Comment dorm and you'll get on my dorm list or whatever,
• 13:28
Speaker 4: and a lot of them are moms of sons and
• 13:32
Speaker 4: you know they did. But I mean, yeah, I get
• 13:34
Speaker 4: it when we may not, you know, do as much
• 13:37
  Speaker 4: or you know, but no, I mean I I I
• 13:41
Speaker 4: we do male, you know, more masculine space all the time.
• 13:45
Speaker 4: I don't know if a which age you know, freshman
• 13:48
Speaker 4: is going to want you know, a girl coming in,
• 13:50
Speaker 4: you know, to do his space. But I'm totally you know.
• 13:55
Speaker 4: I mean, that's the thing with this business for me,
• 13:57
Speaker 4: and I knew when we were doing this project, I
• 13:59
Speaker 4: was like, I want this to different than any other
• 14:01
Speaker 4: dorm room that I've seen. It was truthfully, it was
• 14:04
Speaker 4: sometime it was intimidating me just because I'm ever, you know,
• 14:10
Speaker 4: I knew I could do it. I knew my team
• 14:12
Speaker 4: would execute all those things. But the troll side of
• 14:16
Speaker 4: me of like, how what I went into that project
• 14:19
Speaker 4: on that Saturday because we did all this in one day.
• 14:21
Speaker 4: We got there at eight am and we looked at
• 14:22
Speaker 4: nine thirty, and I had three options for everything because
• 14:28
Speaker 4: I was like, what if this doesn't fit whatever.
• 14:32
Speaker 6: Truthfully, she was supposed to have a whole.
• 14:34
Speaker 4: Different layout, and the very last minute she got switched
• 14:37
Speaker 4: to the ADA room, which cuts off almost half of
• 14:40
Speaker 4: the space. So I was adjusting everything. I'm like, these
• 14:43
Speaker 4: people just paid me to have all these things made custom.
• 14:46
Speaker 4: We got to figure out a way to make it happen.
• 14:49
Speaker 2: Wow. I mean you definitely did your job. And then
• 14:53
  Speaker 2: it's a lot.
• 14:54
Speaker 4: But I mean just seeing like her excitement and trufully
• 14:58
Speaker 4: just seeing the you know, excitement from the engagement you
• 15:01
Speaker 4: know on social and I mean, I know it's not
• 15:04
Speaker 4: for everybody, but I love it. And I walked away,
• 15:06
Speaker 4: which it's so proud.
• 15:07
Speaker 5: I was like, that is I bet you did?
• 15:10
Speaker 2: Like I would live in the would I would too,
• 15:13
Speaker 2: so I would live there. Yeah.
• 15:14
Speaker 5: I think it's nicer than my house.
• 15:16
Speaker 2: Yeah you too, Amy. Thank you for joining us. We
• 15:18
Speaker 2: really appreciate you. Please enjoy Mexico.
• 15:20
Speaker 6: We don't have a great day.
• 15:22
Speaker 3: Ok, Okay, So we're going to bring in Riley and
• 15:40
Speaker 3: she is in her college girl era and we're going
• 15:43
Speaker 3: to talk to her all about her dorm room. So
• 15:46
Speaker 3: let's bring Riley in.
• 15:47
Speaker 2: Hi. Thank you for joining us.
• 15:49
Speaker 1: Yes, thank you guys so much for having me.
• 15:53
Speaker 3: Of course, So you lived in the sorority house last year, right, Yes,
• 15:57
  Speaker 3: my sophomore year.
• 15:58
Speaker 1: So I lived in the house and it was just
• 16:01
  Speaker 1: it was perfect.
• 16:02
Speaker 2: But yes, it looks perfect. We have some pictures here, Riley.
• 16:05
  Speaker 2: I mean, seriously, I don't know that I ever had
• 16:09
Speaker 2: a room that looks that look that good. And I'm
• 16:11
Speaker 2: fifty eight and we amding my I'm just in a
• 16:14
Speaker 2: new house. Nope, I don't think I'm gonna get this effect.
• 16:18
Speaker 1: That's funny you say that. My dad said the same thing.
• 16:20
Speaker 1: He's like, why does my room not look this nice?
• 16:23
Speaker 1: You're living in a dorm and your room is like
• 16:25
Speaker 1: nicer than mine. Like he was just like we had
• 16:28
Speaker 1: we put him to work, Riley.
• 16:30
Speaker 2: I mean, you have a scance lighting up a picture above.
• 16:34
Speaker 2: You have a light like reflected so you could really
• 16:37
Speaker 2: see this monet ish. I don't know what's going on
• 16:40
Speaker 2: with this small print you have by your bed and
• 16:44
Speaker 2: you have sconces light up sconces, sconce it. Yes.
• 16:49
Speaker 1: No, I was definitely very into designing my dorm room.
• 16:53
Speaker 1: And luckily I have like an angel roommate who she
• 16:57
Speaker 1: was like, yeah, do whatever you want, like and I
• 17:00
Speaker 1: was like I told her. I was like, okay, I
• 17:01
Speaker 1: ordered us some sconces. She's like, what's a sconce And I.
• 17:06
Speaker 2: Was like, literally would not know.
• 17:08
Speaker 3: No one was telling me about it before.
• 17:10
Speaker 2: And then I was like, oh that is.
• 17:12
Speaker 5: Like yeah, I know that they're they're big now and
• 17:16
Speaker 5: they add like such a like sophisticated air to a
• 17:20
Speaker 5: dorm room. I mean, we didn't have sconces. We didn't
• 17:22
Speaker 5: have so far. It's like our dorm rooms were about studying.
• 17:27
Speaker 5: I feel like that's not true anymore.
• 17:29
Speaker 2: But this is your sorority house. This is right, So
• 17:32
Speaker 2: this is okay. And you mentioned that your roommate was
• 17:37
Speaker 2: an angel, and let you in my mind in this scenario,
• 17:41
Speaker 2: you are definitely the angel. Like if I'm that mom,
• 17:46
Speaker 2: I'm like, we score. Oh my god, so sweet. Yeah.
• 17:51
Speaker 2: I just I love that stuff.
• 17:53
Speaker 1: I love designing things like I just feel like I
• 17:56
Speaker 1: love when it all comes together. Like that's like my
• 17:58
Speaker 1: favorite part about moving into any new room because I've
• 18:02
Speaker 1: had to move every year. Freshman year, we were in
• 18:05
Speaker 1: like the standard dorms. In the sore year, we were
• 18:08
Speaker 1: in the house, and then this year I'm off campus.
• 18:10
Speaker 1: So it's a little bit different at TCU because our
• 18:14
Speaker 1: dorms are actually on campus, so we have something called
• 18:18
Speaker 1: Greek Village. So all of our sorority houses, they're all
• 18:21
Speaker 1: on campus, right next to the sophomore dorms.
• 18:24
Speaker 2: So you're required to live on campus. Two years.
• 18:26
Speaker 1: So it's really fun because you're by all of the
• 18:28
Speaker 1: sophomores regardless of if you.
• 18:30
Speaker 2: Live in the house or not.
• 18:32
Speaker 3: So that was really fun. Did you do this all
• 18:34
Speaker 3: by yourself? Like, did you style the room all by yourself?
• 18:37
  Speaker 5: Yes?
• 18:38
Speaker 1: I just like kept finding things and then put it
• 18:41
Speaker 1: all together and it worked.
• 18:43
Speaker 2: You're on a terior design major, so.
• 18:45
Speaker 5: I was just going to ask, are you have you
• 18:47
Speaker 5: thought about like being an interior design major. You obviously
• 18:50
Speaker 5: have a talent for it and you love it.
• 18:51
Speaker 1: Yes, I definitely love it. I'm not I wish I was,
• 18:54
Speaker 1: because our program at our school is just amazing. I'm
• 18:58
Speaker 1: actually finance and Fashion merchandising major, so yeah, you get.
• 19:03
Speaker 5: A job on your ount. I'm a chair designer, so
• 19:06
  Speaker 5: it's a super fun career. But I mean you're gorying
• 19:09
Speaker 5: to make a lot more money probably being a finance major.
• 19:12
Speaker 2: Speaking in money, how much did all this cost you?
• 19:15
Speaker 1: Yeah, honestly, I was able to do it pretty affordable.
• 19:19
Speaker 1: I had a lot of like Great Home Goods and
• 19:21
Speaker 1: Amazon fines, so it wasn't like crazy, and I found
• 19:27
Speaker 1: like the sofa at Target on sale, so it wasn't
• 19:32
Speaker 1: like absurd. I feel like recently, there's been so much
• 19:35
Speaker 1: about like the hiring into your designer's for doorms and
• 19:39
Speaker 1: it being just like absurdly expensive, and so I feel
• 19:43
Speaker 1: like being able to see that you can do it
• 19:46
Speaker 1: kind of on a budget and not spend like tens
• 19:49
Speaker 1: of thousands of dollars. But it's just looking a lot
• 19:54
Speaker 1: and like really trying to find those deals because that's
• 19:58
Speaker 1: kind of the hard part because I'll see something and
• 20:00
Speaker 1: it's so expensive and then it's like, okay, wait, I
• 20:03
Speaker 1: could find something maybe a little bit more affordable and
• 20:06
Speaker 1: get the same vibe across Joan.
• 20:08
Speaker 2: Do you find because you're a head designer, like now
• 20:10
Speaker 2: everything is about restoration hardware dupes and you could find
• 20:13
Speaker 2: them on Amazon som room right, like you could. Just
• 20:18
Speaker 2: it's fun almost. I would go up on AI and say,
• 20:20
Speaker 2: I want my dorm to look like it cost fifty
• 20:24
Speaker 2: thousand dollars to decorate all dupes of whatever.
• 20:28
Speaker 5: Same thing, and they have and really dupes that are
• 20:30
Speaker 5: so good, and I feel like that's like a really
• 20:32
Speaker 5: popular esthetic. Now I have a question for you, though,
• 20:35
Speaker 5: So I know you do this because you want to
• 20:37
Speaker 5: like your dormom to feel homeye, And I love that
• 20:39
Speaker 5: and I wish I had like that was like a
• 20:41
Speaker 5: thing when my kids were going to school because I
• 20:43
Speaker 5: felt like I left them and you know, they have
• 20:44
Speaker 5: no they didn't really have the comforts of home. They
• 20:46
Speaker 5: had like a bedspread they picked out and their clothes,
• 20:48
Speaker 5: and I, you know, I love that you do this,
• 20:51
Speaker 5: But I wonder is some of this about Instagram and
• 20:53
Speaker 5: about the social media and the competition that I kind
• 20:56
Speaker 5: of feel like everybody's now. I love seeing them pop
• 20:59
Speaker 5: up on my phone and I love looking at them,
• 21:01
Speaker 5: but I feel like, boy, that's a lot of pressure.
• 21:04
  Speaker 2: For sure.
• 21:05
Speaker 1: I feel like it's kind of created this like unnecessary
• 21:08
Speaker 1: pressure when it's like if you're doing it for the
• 21:11
Speaker 1: wrong reasons, it can totally feel like that. And I
• 21:13
Speaker 1: mean I love to make like TikTok Day in the
• 21:16
Speaker 1: Life videos and stuff so like, and.
• 21:19
Speaker 2: I also love hosting people.
• 21:20
Speaker 1: So I feel like for me, it was like, I
• 21:24
Speaker 1: my environment impacts me a lot. So I if my
• 21:27
Speaker 1: space looks like exactly how I want it to, like,
• 21:30
Speaker 1: I just feel very calm and like just I just
• 21:33
Speaker 1: feel a lot more settled. So that's kind of how
• 21:36
Speaker 1: I thought about it. But I do think especially with
• 21:40
Speaker 1: like actually hiring an interior designer like that has just
• 21:44
Speaker 1: changed the game. And I feel like it has created
• 21:46
Speaker 1: an added pressure just for girls coming into school, especially
• 21:50
Speaker 1: freshman year, like you want to like fit in and
• 21:53
Speaker 1: make it work and stuff. But I do think it
• 21:56
Speaker 1: really can create unnecessary pressure.
• 21:59
  Speaker 2: I agree, And I think Joe, I don't know if
• 22:00
Speaker 2: you felt like this, I did for as a as
• 22:03
Speaker 2: a mom, because all the moms also post the door
• 22:07
Speaker 2: after your your kid moves in, and it's you know,
• 22:12
Speaker 2: you have to show your work. It's basically to you know,
• 22:16
Speaker 2: to your social media following. And so I am not creative.
• 22:21
  Speaker 2: I am not at all. I don't know, I'm not
• 22:23
Speaker 2: good with interior design. And I remember feeling that pressure.
• 22:26
Speaker 2: So I was peeling off wallpaper and putting it onto bricks.
• 22:29
Speaker 2: But you know it's crazy.
• 22:32
Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, no, I definitely felt it too. But you know,
• 22:36
Speaker 5: like I said, it wasn't really to disagree at all
• 22:39
Speaker 5: when either one of my daughters were going to school.
• 22:40
Speaker 5: They're in their thirties now, and it was kind of
• 22:43
Speaker 5: just starting up, I feel like at that time, and
• 22:45
Speaker 5: so if you did anything extra, you kind of got
• 22:48
Speaker 5: like a little applause. Now now it's like way beyond,
• 22:51
Speaker 5: and I feel like a lot of people are spending
• 22:52
Speaker 5: a lot of money. I know you, like a lot
• 22:54
Speaker 5: of people are doing it on a budget, but I
• 22:56
Speaker 5: think the people that don't have budgets, it's putting a
• 22:59
Speaker 5: lot of pressure on everybody else. I almost feel bad
• 23:02
Speaker 5: for the other girls who are you moving into the dorm,
• 23:05
Speaker 5: especially as freshmen. I like, I love everything I brought,
• 23:07
Speaker 5: and then they see the one next door with the
• 23:09
Speaker 5: wallpaper and the curtains and vanities, and I feel a
• 23:12
Speaker 5: little bad for them.
• 23:13
Speaker 2: Yeah, me too. Well, okay, so Riley, we are so impressed.
• 23:18
Speaker 2: Your room is just gorgeous. You are just gorgeous, and
• 23:21
Speaker 2: thank you so much for joining us. Yes, thank you
• 23:24
  Speaker 2: guys so much.
