- 0:07The Atlanta Braves visited the Philadelphia Phillies at Veterans Stadium for a Sunday
- 0:10afternoon game on June 19, 1977. The Braves were a fairly awful team, having lost more
- 0:16than 90 games in each of the past two seasons. They were managed by Dave Bristol, who returned
- 0:21for 1977, but was off to an awful start. They entered this game with a 23-42 record at the
- 0:27bottom of the NL West. The Phillies were quite the opposite. They won 101 games and were
- 0:31managed by Danny Ozarek in 1976, but lost the NLCS to the Big Red Machine. This audio
- 0:37recording is from the Philadelphia Radio broadcast, featuring announcers Harry Callas and Richie
- 0:41Ashburn. The Iron Temple chatters with a very crisp rendition of our national anthem and a
- 0:47perfect day for baseball here. It's going to be warm. In fact, the temperature is forecast to go
- 0:52into the 90s, but the humidity is going to go down throughout the day. And of course, it's roll-up
- 0:57today here at Veterans Stadium. And you see many, many of these red roll-up hats worn by youngsters
- 1:03and adults alike, as the youngsters have been kind enough to pass them on to Dad and, in some cases,
- 1:08Mom here on Father's Day. See, where a lot of kids didn't. Well, that's true, too. We've got some
- 1:16American League action already underway. First end of a double header in Cleveland,
- 1:20Tigers and the Indians are scoreless at the end of two. John Hiller is pitching for Detroit,
- 1:24and Wayne Garland is going for Cleveland. Of course, the Indians, as we mentioned,
- 1:28under new management today, Jeff Corbett, taking over as the manager. In Chicago,
- 1:33first end of a double header, the pitchers are up. Doc Medich will work for the Oakland A's.
- 1:38He is 5-2 and Wood will go for the White Sox. He is 0-1 this year. Baltimore,
- 1:45Toronto, Flatingen for the Orioles, and Lemancek will go for Toronto. Other American League
- 1:50action will start later on. Steve Carleton, who has lost only one game at Veterans Stadium all
- 1:56year long, and that was his initial outing to the Montreal Expos on opening day as he gave
- 2:01up three home runs to Valentine Perez and Carter, and the Phillies lost that game 4-3.
- 2:05Carleton got a no decision in his last start at Cincinnati last Monday night,
- 2:10gave up a home run to Foster. Carleton has won three of his last four decisions.
- 2:16There's Barry Benel, the leaded off for the Atlanta Braves, right-handed batter. The first pitch
- 2:22to him is a curve ball over first strike. Benel batting at 3-33. Fern Benson,
- 2:29coaching third, Eddie Haas at first for Atlanta. Here's another curve ball,
- 2:32and a fly ball center field. Easy play for Gary Maddox. Hardly has to move. There's the first
- 2:37out of the ball game. You're talking a little bit about McBride, Andy, and it is different to play
- 2:45right field. People think that, oh, well, he's an out-fielder, but the ball does come off the
- 2:49bat differently. It'll thrice from certain hitters and tail from others, and little things will have
- 2:53to pick up, but he's such a good athlete and runs so well that I think he'll be able to play it all right.
- 2:57Here's Jerry Royster batting in the second spot, batting at 2-15, a right-handed hitter.
- 3:02Pitch on the way to him is a hard ground ball back towards second base. Seismore Fields makes
- 3:08the throw across in time. Royster is out. Three pitches, two outs, and Willie Montaner has always
- 3:16slow to come to the plate will be the batter. We'd like to send our greetings this afternoon to
- 3:20Betty King, mother of Hank King, who is the Phillies batting practice pitcher. She was injured recently
- 3:26in an accident and is in Montgomery Hospital and we certainly wish her well. Montaner is batting at 3-13.
- 3:34Willie had two hits in last night's game. He also grounded into another double play. He led all
- 3:40national leagueers and grounding into double plays a year ago hit into 26 of them. Willie left-handed
- 3:47batter. Carlton Wines, the pitch on the way to him, is a strike call even though Willie jumped back
- 3:52from it and the pitch was off the outside corner. That's Willie. Carlton ready again. Here's the
- 4:00pitch. Comes a little sidearm and the pitch misses. One ball and one strike. Carlton seeking his
- 4:05100th victory as a Phillie today. Next pitch on the way to Montanez, he fouls it back to the screen.
- 4:13Steve is 99 and 66 in a Phillies uniform. Lifetime it would be his 177th victory if he can win today.
- 4:25Carlton coming into the ball game with a 309 earned run average in 77. The one-two pitch, slow
- 4:31breaking curve and it's just a little high two and two. Montanez had one hit and four tries against
- 4:39Carlton last year. Here's the next pitch on the way. Mrs. High. Three balls, two strikes to Montanez.
- 4:45Carlton beat the Braves twice last year. They did not beat him. Here's the full-count pitch.
- 4:51Curveball laced the center. Theomatics coming over and he grabs it for the out. Braves are out
- 4:56in order in the first at the end of a happening. That's about a nothing. Phillies coming up.
- 5:00What's the clump? Juicy and where's the Phillies uniform? Phillies Franks. When you come back from
- 5:10the food store give me some Phillies Franks. Phillies Franks. They're so plump, so juicy, so
- 5:16delicious you can almost hear the roar of the crowd when you eat them. For it's one, two, three,
- 5:21strikes and expressing to being there. Phillies Franks are by Medford. If you don't see them,

- 6:36you can expect some tremendous baseball starting here tomorrow night at the Vette. The two teams
- 6:40that met in the playoffs last year will be back at each other again. Johnny Bench, Pete Rose,
- 6:45Joe Morgan and the rest of the great Cincinnati club will be here for night games tomorrow,
- 6:49Tuesday and Wednesday. The Varnights game will begin at 8.35. The Tuesday and Wednesday games
- 6:55begin at 7.35. Funding tickets remain for all three. Hope you make it to the Vette for the Phillies
- 7:00and the Reds and the weather is supposed to be ideal tomorrow night. Well the Oakland A's have,
- 7:05there's been a correction sent over on the starting pitcher for Oakland and Mike Norris is the
- 7:11starter in that first game rather than MediH. Apparently MediH will go in the second game.
- 7:15He'll be pitching against Wilbur Wood. There in the Phillies first inning, it'll be Gary Maddox
- 7:23leading off, Bake McBride batting second and Mike Schmidt batting third. Just when the trade was
- 7:27made, everybody was talking about Bake being a leadoff better and here he is in the number two
- 7:31hole. Why do you think that's, why do you think that he is batting number two? I don't know. Danny
- 7:38Ozark is funny. He, he goes with a set lineup especially when he's winning and I honestly think
- 7:43Johnstone would have played today except that Jay hurt his wrist a little bit last night. He doesn't
- 7:48usually shake up the way guys hit so he had Johnstone batting second so he moved McBride into
- 7:52the spot where Johnstone was and I honestly believe that's why he's batting second.
- 8:04So Gary Maddox deleted off of the Phillies batting of 282.
- 8:07Here's Steve Hargan making his first appearance for the Atlanta Braves. They got him at midnight on
- 8:16the 15th of June at the trading deadline from the Texas Rangers. Right-hander's first pitch is a
- 8:21fly ball fouled on the right field side strike one. Hargan with Texas had won two times, had lost
- 8:28three times and his earned run average was 6.21. In warming up here, it looked as though Hargan
- 8:35was throwing a knuckleball. Pitch on the way to Maddox and that's in for a strike. Well we saw
- 8:44enough of those things last night so it looked like he threw one right there too. That's kind of
- 8:48unexpected because we've heard he was kind of a fastball slider type guy. Here's the O2 pitch
- 8:52on the way to Maddox and Gary bends away and the ball hits off the end of his bat and that may
- 8:57have been the knuckleball too. Well just off the barrel end of the handle end of the bat, Cap remains
- 9:050-2 on Maddox. Hargan winds here's the next pitch. Pop-up, playable by Willie Montanez,
- 9:12staring up into bright sunshine, crosses into foul territory and gloves it in foul ground for the
- 9:17out. Maddox retired for the first out of the ball game and here is Bigfoot Bride. Got a great
- 9:23hand when he was sent up as a pinch hitter last night. McBride grounded out in his first Philly's
- 9:31appearance. Bake a left handed batter hitting at 260. Philly's have become a hot home club. They have
- 9:42won 18 of their last 22 games here at the vet and Philly is hoping that this carries over not only
- 9:48through today but through that Cincinnati series. Fastball low inside ball one. McBride from the
- 9:56Cardinals brings with him four home runs and 20 runs batted in. Gary Mumfrey playing very well for
- 10:02the Cardinals more or less beat him out of a job. Here's a pitch over the inside corner of strike.
- 10:06One ball and one strike on Bakefoot Bride making his first start as a Philly. Hargan's next delivery,
- 10:17the knuckleball is low. McBride is 28 years of age. He is in his fourth year of big league baseball.
- 10:24What a rookie year he had batted 309 and stole 30 bases that year. 2-1 pitch on the way. Blind drive
- 10:36into left field but playing it just about right as Matthews and he gloves it for the out. McBride
- 10:40out second out of the first inning for the Philly's. No score in the ball game as Mike Schmidt
- 10:45heads for the plate. Schmidt batting at 256. Mike lost an 11 game batting streak last night.
- 10:58Had trouble with that knuckleball at Phil Necros. Nothing unusual about that. The Phillies have almost
- 11:06always had trouble with Necro. He was not involved in the decision as the Phillies finally beat
- 11:11Frank LaCorte. Finney fouls back the first pitch strike one. Mike with 15 homeruns 34 RBI's.
- 11:22Hargan lines here's the one strike pitch low and outside. You'll find in a case like that when
- 11:33these hitters haven't faced the pitcher and either it's usually the pitcher will have the upper hand
- 11:37especially early in the game because hitters really don't like to face somebody they don't know
- 11:41anything about. That's on the way to Schmidt misses inside two balls in a strike. Hargan is 34
- 11:46years of age and this is his 12th year in the major leagues. He was first up with the Indians
- 11:51back in 1965. His best year was 1967 when he won 14 and lost 13. Schmidt hits the ball to center field
- 11:59retreating on the finale is back. He can't get into the fouls off the third field wall. Mike's
- 12:12hitter was a fast ball about letter high and really ripped and almost hit it out of here. Looked like
- 12:33Schmidt with his second triple of a year. That bounded right above the 408 foot sign and straight away center field but now possibly had a chance to catch it.
- 12:43He didn't. And then the ball came up the ball wildly and made it the third base. Here is Greg Luzinski.
- 12:50The ball has batted safely in 12 of 13. No score in this game but a two out chance for the Phillies. Schmidt at third with two down.
- 13:03Hargan will use the wind up pitch on the way to Luzinski is inside and gets away from Correll. Here comes Schmidt. He will score.
- 13:10The ball really broke. You can see it come in on Luzinski and get away from Correll and they might make that a wild pitch. It's hard to say.
- 13:25Phillies take the lead one to nothing. Count Luzinski one ball and no strikes.
- 13:38The ball leads the Phillies and RB eyes with 45. Hargan winds. Here's the pitch and it's over the outside corner of strike.
- 13:49Correll of course is used to handling the knuckleball. He caught Phil Negro last Thursday in Atlanta when Negro beat the Phillies.
- 13:56Next pitch to Luzinski backs him away and this one too skips out of the glove of Correll.
- 14:05Two balls and a strike. The Greg Luzinski. Ball hitting 3-38.
- 14:13Hargan into the wind up and here's the pitch swinging in the midst by the ball.
- 14:19It's officially been ruled a wild pitch on which Mike Schmidt scored the first run of the ball again.
- 14:292-2 on Greg Luzinski. Hargan winds and here's the pitch to him. Ball swings and misses strike 3 and the inning is over but the Phillies take the jump in the ball game.
- 14:38One run on one hit. Nobody left on base. At the end of an inning, Phillies lead 1-0 now time for a tasty break.
- 14:45It takes a lot of years in the business to prove you're one of the all time greats.
- 14:49And it's the same whether you're playing ball or whether you're baking cake. Tasty cake knows. For over 60 years, Tasty Cake has been earning its good name.

- 16:24Jeff Burroughs leads it off for the Braves. And here we have a young girl coming onto the field coming out the third base
- 16:32and putting her arms around Mike Schmidt and planting a kiss on him and now heading back to the sand.
- 16:40Oh my goodness. You know that really tests the players on the spot responses.
- 16:48Schmidt didn't know what to do. You know, this is Larry Bollack getting all over.
- 16:52I might also mention that she is a very well endowed young lady.
- 16:57That would be one of the great understatements you've ever made. You don't like to play those things up, Chris.
- 17:04They were up alright. So Schmidt has been tested. First chance of the game right there.
- 17:12Alright, here's Burroughs in the first pitch to him as high ball one.
- 17:17Burroughs batting at 282, four home runs off Philadelphia pitching.
- 17:22Carl is next delivery. A breaking ball. A slider is over the corner of strike.
- 17:28One ball in one strike.
- 17:33Burroughs swings and misses strike two. Nothing like a night's warm day at the old ballpark to bring out the best in people, right?
- 17:40I'm sure Schmidt is blushing down there, but you can't see for the shadow of his cap.
- 17:45You can't see as a reddish-conflicted young man as it is. Outside, two balls and two strikes.
- 17:52Burroughs will be followed by Matthews and Correll. Next pitch on the way, swinging and a miss.
- 17:57Carl then picks up his first strike out of the ball game.
- 18:02Burroughs strikes out. First out of the second inning and here is Gary Matthews.
- 18:11Well, I think we're supposed to say after something like that that she will be ejected from the park.
- 18:16That goes without saying. Here's a pitch into Matthews that misses ball one.
- 18:20I have never seen so many security guards converge on one person before.
- 18:25Next pitch is over for a strike, one and one. Matthews not hitting very well right now, carrying a 273 average to the plate.
- 18:33Carl and a quick worker. Here's his next pitch. Hecks swing followed back to the screen.
- 18:39They were fighting each other to get after her down there. They were coming from right field.
- 18:46One ball and two strikes on Matthews. Atlanta's left fielder. Carl then swings into his windup.
- 18:53Here's the left-hander's pitch. A called strike and Matthews is out of there.
- 18:57Carl then picks up back to back strikeouts. Two down second inning with the Phillies on top one to nothing.
- 19:03Here's batter Vic Correll. Correll batting 247, sharing the catching job with Beth Poca Roba.
- 19:14Correll right-handed batter. Here's the pitch to him. A curve ball is bounced third base but it's foul.
- 19:26Strike one on Correll. Carl in into the windup. The next pitch misses inside a ball.
- 19:32One ball and one strike. Correll faced Carl in six times last year, had one hit.
- 19:42Lefty Wines in the next pitch is a fastball, hopped back toward the mound.
- 19:45Carl then gloves on the third base side and throws him out. A one, two, three inning for Steve as the braids go down in the second.
- 19:51At the end of one and a half, those lead one nothing.
- 19:54You are it, we've got it at your tracer finish. Maybe you can't fit a whole baseball team in a four-door Valarri wagon,
- 20:03but you can fit more inside than in any domestic wagon inside. That's one big reason it's the number one selling wagon build in America.
- 20:10Another is a four-door convenience. And now it's the season to get a real hold on the senior local Billy Land,
- 20:1624-centimeter Valarri wagon now. We got it, we got it for you. We got it.

- 20:32Moreover, the choice of meat is tremendous, from fresh ground beef, steak, roasts and chops to price.
- 20:38If you're a Phillies fan who hasn't had Lancaster brand at home, stop rooting for it.
- 20:43It's more to life than just the price. Lancaster brand meat, sold only at Acne Super Savers.

- 21:27Richie Hebner will lead it off for the Phillies. Hebner, McCarver and Bowett about in the second inning against right hander Steve Hargan.
- 21:34Ellie's lead at 1-0 on a triple by Schmidt in a wild pitch. First pitch to Hebner is low ball 1.
- 21:42Well, the Cincinnati Reds do in town tomorrow night, and that's going to be something.
- 21:47The whole country will be able to watch that ball game tomorrow night.
- 21:50Even Howard Cosell will be here as one of the commentators. It will of course be blacked out in Philadelphia,
- 21:55but we'll be looking for you here at Veteran Stadium for the 835 start tomorrow night.
- 22:00Pitch on the way to Hebner is low inside. Jim Coptigo for the Phillies and Fred Norman, who is pitching well now, will work for Cincinnati.
- 22:11Reds have beaten the Phillies 9 straight if you go back through the playoffs in the regular season last year, swinging in a foul ball by Hebner.
- 22:182-1 the count.
- 22:22On Tuesday night, the Reds are going to start a rookie, a rookie right hander named Paul Musko.
- 22:27He'll pitch against Randy Lurch, Larry Christensen and Jack Bellingham Wednesday,
- 22:32swinging another foul by Hebner. The count is level of 2-2.
- 22:42Reds coming in as a hot club. Don't know how they'll not get a Montreal today, but they have 1-7 straight going into that game against the Expo's.
- 22:49Woody Freiman, Expo pitching against Wayne Putschel, ex-Phillie.
- 22:54Here's a fly ball shallow left center field, shortstop Robinson going not shading his eyes, being called off, and the ball is dropped by Matthews and a second base is Hebner.
- 23:04Matthews came in and the ball hit off his glove and dropped safely, and Hebner is at second base.
- 23:10It's going to be a difficult scoring decision. That ball was definitely the shortstop ball.
- 23:15And it's such a high sky today and all the wind and everything, Robinson never got to it.
- 23:20They're going to give Matthews an error. That's pause for station identification. This is the Phillies baseball network.
- 23:27This name to Phillies baseball, Longley High Valley's Major League Sports Station, WEST Radio 14 Eastern.
- 23:40Tim McAvlar at the plate, so the Braves have made a couple of errors, if you will, today, only one officially.
- 23:45You can call the wild pitching there if you want. However, that is an earned run the Phillies got in the first inning.
- 23:51Here's Tim McAvlar about him 298.
- 23:55Timmy regular catcher every time Steve Carleton works for the Phillies, a combination which has worked out very well.
- 24:01We're all concerned. It gives Boone a day off every fourth or fifth day.
- 24:05Argan stretches. Hevner leads the second pitch on the way to Timmy as low inside ball one.
- 24:15McAvlar with one home run, it was a pinch hit homer and six runs batted in.
- 24:21His on base percentage is just outstanding too. Timmy gets so many walks, he's just contributed so much to the team.
- 24:28Next pitch on the way over the inside corner of strike and of course he is the good humor man too.
- 24:32He is funny. He really, he's like a stand-up comedian almost.
- 24:39He would probably correct you and say a squatting comedian.
- 24:43He looks more at home in a squat than for sure.
- 24:46One ball and one strike to McAvlar. Here's the pitch to him.
- 24:49Inside, two and one. Nobody added the inning.
- 24:53Hevner at second on the air by Matthews. Look like that was Robinson's ball to catch all the way.
- 24:58Matthews called him off and then when he didn't get it, he was charged with the air.
- 25:03Hevner running all the way, got the second.
- 25:06The two one pitches a little humpback liner, fielded on the short hop by Robinson holds the runner, safe at first.
- 25:12He pulled Monteney's off the bag as the throw was a little short into the home plate side and that'll be a base hit for Tim McAvlar.
- 25:20That's another aspect of McAvlar's game that people don't realize is how well he runs. That's, uh, Robinson made a pretty decent flight.
- 25:27Craig's problem always has been is that he winds up too much when he goes to throw and takes a little extra time.
- 25:32He took that time then and McAvlar is great speed for a catcher and he beat it out and he'll get a base hit out of it.
- 25:40Here's Larry Bola with runners at first and second. Nobody out.
- 25:44Hevner not able to move off the bag at second with Robinson making that play right in front of him.
- 25:50Pitch on the way to Bola, squares the bunt, drops it down the third lay, baseline is the beauty.
- 25:54Reusster had not come in for the ball, he had headed back and nobody bothered to field the bunt hit.
- 26:01Bunt single for Bola, bases loaded.
- 26:04Steve Hargan has to wonder right now what he just got into because that was a terrible play by the Braves.
- 26:10The team will have that set up where the pitcher is covering, whether or not the third baseman is coming in and they completely botched that play
- 26:17and Reusster turned his back as soon as Bola bunted the ball and went and covered third and the ball was bunted right to him.
- 26:24A base is loaded situation for the Phillies who bring Ted Seismore to the plate, batting at 271.
- 26:29There is nobody out in the inning.
- 26:31Hevner is a third base, McAvlar at second base, Bola with the bunt single at first base.
- 26:36Braves are playing a double play dip.
- 26:40Hargan will work from the stretch.
- 26:43Pitch to Seismore, outside ball one and Carell had to go after that knuckleball on both knees.
- 26:53Phillies pitcher Steve Carleton in the on-deck circle, he leads it one to nothing with a good chance to get more in the second inning.
- 26:59Nobody out.
- 27:00Hargan at the bell, here's his pitch, strike call.
- 27:04Looked like it was a high pitch from here but it's a called strike by home plate umpire Paul Pryor.
- 27:20One ball and one strike on Seismore.
- 27:24Here's the pitch, takes it outside and low.
- 27:27Two balls and a strike.
- 27:35Pryor is playing a double header today.
- 27:40They are playing at San Francisco, they have lost five straight.
- 27:44Seismore tries to check his swing and let's see if he does.
- 27:47Appeal to first base, it's a strike.
- 27:50Two balls and two strikes.
- 27:51Pryor appealed to Andy Olson who raised the arm.
- 27:54And so the count is level on Seismore.
- 28:00Base is loaded, nobody out for the Phillies.
- 28:05And Hargan really should be in better shape than he is right now, there's been an error this inning.
- 28:09And the Bunsingle should have been fielded and turned into something and then of course Robinson almost throughout Timmy McArthur.
- 28:16The 2-2 pitch, swing and a foul tip in and out of the glove of Corell.
- 28:23Seismore remains alive.
- 28:27Well after the Cincinnati series the Phillies will be playing within their own division for the next 25 games.
- 28:33And I think all baseball fans agree that the National League East has been baseball's toughest and probably most interesting division this year.
- 28:41Here's the pitch from Hargan.
- 28:45A ground ball towards shortstop, Robinson to second, there's one back to first to double play.
- 28:50Phillies get a run out of it, no RBI for Seismore.
- 28:53Hevner crosses the plate with the second run of the ball game and the Phillies lead it 2-0.
- 28:58But the Braves will take that, that's exactly the way they were playing it to get to when they did.
- 29:03And McArthur winds up on third base.
- 29:12Here's Steve Carlin, Steve batting 2-29.
- 29:16Eight hits and 35 times up.
- 29:19Danny Ozark is out conferring with home plate umpire Paul Pryor.
- 29:26Danny now back to the dugout.
- 29:29Crowell in left-handed batter gets good wood in the ball.
- 29:35Braves infield back with two down.
- 29:38Phillies score to run like this in the first inning.
- 29:40A runner at third and two out on a wild pitch.
- 29:46Here's the first delivery to Crowell and he fouls it off strike one.
- 29:49Steve has knocked in three runs this year.
- 29:51Phillies have given him a 2-0 lead.
- 29:57White Fox lead the A's 1-0 at the end of two in the first end of their double header.
- 30:02The Indians playing under Jeff Torborg lead Detroit 2-0 at the end of four.
- 30:06Carlin swings and foul tips it at the plate.
- 30:090-2 the count on Carlin.
- 30:13Andre Forton and Larvel Blanks have both hit Cleveland home runs in the fourth with nobody on.
- 30:18Forton seventh and Blanks third.
- 30:26Next pitch to Carlton.
- 30:28Line drive, base hit center field.
- 30:30Here comes McIver. Phillies lead at 3-0.
- 30:33RBI number four for Carlin and the Phillies have another run.
- 30:39That's the way a pitcher can really help himself.
- 30:41Steve Carlton has swung the bat very very well this year and that's a good run for the Phillies.
- 30:45They get a two-out run when they look like they had gotten himself out of that inning with a double play ball.
- 30:50The base is loaded, the pitcher coming up and that makes the pitcher feel pretty good.
- 30:54Phillies can get the base hit and keeps it alive and gets the Phillies another run.
- 30:58Phillies have scored two of their three runs with two down.
- 31:02Back up top now here's Gary Maddox who fouled out to Willie Montenez.
- 31:06Pitch to the right-handed batter.
- 31:08Fly ball center field Barry Bonnell playing it just about right and he takes it for the out.
- 31:14Phillies out in the second inning but they have scored two times.
- 31:18Two runs on three hits.
- 31:20One error and one man left on base. They are all on our own runs.
- 31:25At the end of two Phillies lead it three to nothing.
- 31:28You want it, we've got it.
- 31:31At your right-handed finish fielder.

- 31:47Ask your Philly land Chrysler Pima dealer about his grand-fland deal on Newport today.
- 31:52We got it, now it's time for you. We got it.
- 31:57I'm on serratano for you, isn't it?
- 32:00You know, last year I followed up with the Phillies.
- 32:05All year they gave me so many moments of joy.
- 32:08When I love something I want to be back to them.
- 32:11I want to be as close as I can.
- 32:13So they won't tell me a piece of lead in a parking lot to build my house.
- 32:17I brought it out to them.
- 32:19Right next to the stadium.
- 32:21So I'll then get my wine, they'll give me my food.
- 32:23We'll get together after the game.
- 32:25Please join us to share a glass of wine.
- 32:36This game goes to the third inning with the Phillies leading it three to nothing.
- 32:40And Steve Carleton has yet to allow a base runner.
- 32:43He has mowed the braves down three straight per inning
- 32:46and now he goes to the bottom third of the lineup and rat Gilbert.
- 32:49Right handed batter.
- 32:50Carleton winds pitched to him a fastball low outside ball one.
- 32:54Gilbert is batting 2-26.
- 32:58The next pitch to him a strike call right at the knees.
- 33:01Gilbert, somebody's getting him out but the Phillies have had a lot of trouble with him.
- 33:05He had two more hits last night including an RBI double.
- 33:08Next pitch is in the dirt as a curveball comes inside.
- 33:11Two and one.
- 33:12Gilbert hit a home run the winning game for Phil Vickro in Atlanta last week.
- 33:16Swing and a miss.
- 33:19Two and two to count to Rod Gilbert leading off the Atlanta third inning.
- 33:24Bright sunny day here at Veteran Stadium.
- 33:26Next pitch on the way, swing and a miss.
- 33:28Carleton picks up his third strike out of the ball game.
- 33:33That's one out on the third inning and here is Craig Robinson.
- 33:41Robinson is batting 2-35.
- 33:46Robbie has had only 17 at bats this year and has four hits.
- 33:51He's a right handed batter once owned by the Phillies.
- 33:53Here's the pitch to him.
- 33:54He lays down a bun.
- 33:55It's hit pretty hard first base side.
- 33:57Hebner fields throws to Seismore in time.
- 34:00Seismore did a slide into the bag and then off again as Robinson slid into the bag.
- 34:05And that was a good defensive play by the Phillies.
- 34:09Carleton was a little late getting over to cover first and Seismore saw that right away.
- 34:13He's a good little heads up ball player and he saw that the bag was uncovered.
- 34:17He got there just ahead of Craig Robinson who runs very well.
- 34:21Here's Steve Hargan the batter.
- 34:23First pitch to him is low inside a ball.
- 34:25He's been in the American League.
- 34:26We have no batting figures on him.
- 34:28Of course he hasn't probably been to the plate for a couple of years anyway.
- 34:31The next pitch is over for a strike.
- 34:32He's a right handed batter.
- 34:39Carleton Wines here's the 1-1 pitch on the way.
- 34:41Strike 2 called.
- 34:42It's like riding a bike though.
- 34:44He grabbed that bat and found home plate alright.
- 34:50Carleton Wines again here's the 1-2 pitch on the way to Hargan.
- 34:53Gave him a curved ball and struck him out.
- 34:55That's not fair.
- 34:56Carleton picks up his fourth strikeout.
- 34:59And in the third inning again the Braves retired in order at the end of 2-1.5.
- 35:03Nothing now time for a tasty break.
- 35:06That gives those fantastic fillets their good name.
- 35:09They're all a feature in every player on the team.

- 36:35Bake McBride will lead off to Philly's third inning, so here he is as a lead off man after all.
- 36:40Bake batting in the number two spot on the order today.
- 36:42Left handed batter, check swing foul ball wide of third base strike one.
- 36:47I'm always used to look at that bat he used when he was with St. Louis and wonder how short it really is.
- 36:51And went down and picked it up today, and I bet it's no more than 31 or 32 inches.
- 36:55It's like a kid would use in Babe Ruth's leg almost, a very, very short bat.
- 36:59Swings and misses at the next pitch, which was low and inside.
- 37:03No balls and two strikes on McBride.
- 37:05He is 0 for 2 as a Philly, having grounded out as a pinch hitter last night.
- 37:10And today, he flyed out to left field.
- 37:12Here's the pitch to him.
- 37:13The ball beyond the mound, Hargan couldn't get it, he slowed it down, and McBride is safe at first base.
- 37:18Hargan would have been better off had he not touched that ball.
- 37:22I believe it would have been played by Gilbrith at second without a problem, but Hargan slowed it down, changed its direction, and Bake McBride has his first Philly set.
- 37:30We've seen that act enough times when he was with St. Louis.
- 37:33He likes to just beat the ball down in the infield somewhere, and that would have been a close play even if the pitcher hadn't touched it.
- 37:38But he's in the first pitch, and once he touched it, McBride was no concept, and the way he can run.
- 37:43McBride comes to the Phillies with nine stolen bases, which already ties him for club high with Gary Maddox, who got two last night and now has nine.
- 37:56Here's Mike Schmidt.
- 37:57Trenty tripled his first time up as a drive hit the center field wall and bounded wildly away from Bennell.
- 38:03He scored later on a wild pitch.
- 38:05Throw to first base, head first back in time as McBride.
- 38:10He has, he almost has both feet on the afterturf, which is an outstanding lead.
- 38:14It's the type of lead that Joe Morgan takes, and there aren't too many Phillies that get this kind of a lead.
- 38:20Pitch on the way to Schmidt is popped up.
- 38:22Willie Monteneuve looking out of an foul ground beside first base.
- 38:26Willie gloves it for the out.
- 38:28Schmidt, he fouls out to Monteneuve.
- 38:30That's the second play he's made just like that today.
- 38:32Maddox hit one to him in that same spot.
- 38:34And that's one down here's Greg Luzinsky.
- 38:36He put the wrap around catch on it.
- 38:39I've seen him do it so many times that he still makes you laugh the way he does.
- 38:43And the crowd really reacts to Willie when he catches the ball.
- 38:45He was a very popular guy in this town and the fans still really love him.
- 38:50Luzinsky struck out on his first at bat.
- 38:54Bowl batting 3-37.
- 38:56And when you come out to the ballpark and cast your ballot for the All-Star game,
- 39:00oh, here's somebody you got to keep in mind.
- 39:03Luzinsky is no higher than seventh in the latest balloting.
- 39:06And, well, he really ought to be higher than that.
- 39:10For example, Lou Brock is out balloting him right now.
- 39:14And Brock has not even played regularly.
- 39:16There goes McBride, which is high a ball throw to second state.
- 39:20Steel number 10 for Bank and his first as a filly.
- 39:24Oh, what a jump he got that time.
- 39:26Is it going to be fun watching this guy play a little bit?
- 39:28He had a tremendous jump on that ball and just made second base easily on it.
- 39:32And McBride is a base stealer.
- 39:34There are some guys who have speed and aren't base stealers.
- 39:37And Bank McBride is a base stealer and he really stole that one easy.
- 39:42Count of one ball to Luzinsky.
- 39:45What a difference that can make.
- 39:46Now we've got a runner at second base, thread of the double play eliminated.
- 39:49Pitch on the way to the ball, checks his swing, but it's a called strike.
- 39:53Lucco ball is in there, one ball and one strike.
- 39:57Greg, the filly's top RBI man, he's got 45.
- 40:11Little by play at second base as Gilbert had come in behind.
- 40:14Now Bakes getting that big lead again.
- 40:17And here's the pitch to the ball.
- 40:19It sails beyond Carrell.
- 40:21Bake McBride will go to third base.
- 40:23Boy, that one really got away from Hargan, that'll be a wild pitch.
- 40:28Second wild pitch of the ball game, the first one cost him a run and this one really sailed.
- 40:34Carrell had no chance.
- 40:35That was a fast ball and it just completely got away from Carrell.
- 40:38That's Bake McBride had a tremendous lead off of second base that time and he had Hargan looking at him.
- 40:44And he made a false break towards third on that and I think he might have caught Carrell's eye a little bit like he was going to steal third.
- 40:50That's the type of player he is, he gets people a little excited out there.
- 40:55Twice the fillies have scored runners from third base in this game with two down.
- 40:59Now they have a runner at third with one away.
- 41:02Pitch to Luzinski, swinging and a mid-strike two, two balls and two strikes.
- 41:09Fillies on top on the scoreboard, three to nothing, fills batting in the third inning, trying to sweep the Atlanta Braves.
- 41:15To set up the proper atmosphere for tomorrow night's big match against the Cincinnati Reds.
- 41:20Pitch to Luzinski, ground ball right side, base hit for the ball, here comes McBride with the fourth run of the game, fills lead at four and nothing.
- 41:28RBI number 46 for the ball.
- 41:31What a reception McBride is getting in the fillies dugout too because he made that run by stealing second and getting the attention of the catcher in the wild pitch and going to third.
- 41:40And then Bull who is just so unbelievably strong hit that ball on the end of his bat and squibbed it through the infield and gets another RBI and he continues his hot-hitting.
- 41:59Scored in every advance so far today, Richie Hevner headed for the plate.
- 42:02He wound up on second base with a two-base error by left fielder Gary Matthews.
- 42:08And it was a pop fly in shallow left field.
- 42:11Shortstop Robinson was back to field if it was called off the ball.
- 42:14Here's a pop-up behind the plate.
- 42:16Carell Maskoff coming back.
- 42:18He is out of room.
- 42:21Bounds on the covering of the runway right behind the home plate area.
- 42:26One strike on Hevner.
- 42:28Hevner then came around to score on the double play ball hit by Seismore.
- 42:36Phillies have scored four runs in the game.
- 42:38Only two RBIs have been awarded.
- 42:40One to Carleton and one to Lozinski.
- 42:43Phillies scored one run in a wild pitch and one on a double play ball.
- 42:48One strike pitch to Hevner.
- 42:50Popped up again foul out of play over top the Atlanta dugout.
- 43:00Hevner behind in the count.
- 43:02No balls and two strikes.
- 43:03Hevner has been scoring a lot of runs for the Phillies.
- 43:06He scored one already today.
- 43:07That's his sixth run in the last four ball games.
- 43:15Steve Hargan making his first National League appearance this afternoon.
- 43:21He stretches and here's the pitch to Hevner.
- 43:23Checks it and takes outside.
- 43:29Hevner is warming up in the bullpen for the Atlanta Braves.
- 43:33Collins the only left hander in their pitching staff right now.
- 43:37Jamie Easterly is on the disabled list.
- 43:40There goes Lozinski.
- 43:41Swing and a foul ball to first base.
- 43:45Bull was really chopping it out towards second base.
- 43:49You could almost hear it up here.
- 43:50He was plundering going down there.
- 43:52He's got the good choppy compact stride.
- 43:54Once he gets rolling, Greggle's surprise how fast he really is.
- 43:57It just takes him a little bit to get going.
- 43:59You can see that in the outfield once in a while when he'll run by a ball.
- 44:02How long it takes him to stop.
- 44:06Bow has got the great stories about what it's like to be chugging back into left field on a pop fly ball.
- 44:13Here's the sound coming in from behind.
- 44:16There he goes again.
- 44:17The one-two pitch.
- 44:18Windrye right center field of base hit.
- 44:21The bull will make it to third base on the single by Hevner.
- 44:24And there is the value of running Lozinski.
- 44:27Reigners at first and third.
- 44:36Hit number seven for the Phillies.
- 44:39And David Bristol is making his way toward the mound.
- 44:41And he is going to make a pitching change.
- 44:44Steve Hargan's debut in the National League is not exactly a success as he will bring in left-hander Don Collins.
- 44:51Phillies lead the ball game four to nothing with the potential for more in the third inning and we'll be back following this message.
- 44:57Once upon a time there was a happy little family.
- 45:00Everybody happy?
- 45:01Happy as a lark.
- 45:02Happy as a plant.
- 45:03Indeed there was a happiest little family you would ever care to meet until it came time to get in their car.
- 45:08Look just get in the car.
- 45:10I don't want to go to the last one.
- 45:12What made them unhappy was that they could never seem to find a car that was right for them.
- 45:16It was either too big and expensive.
- 45:18Maybe we could skip the house payment this month or too small and uncomfortable.
- 45:22Small in here.
- 45:23More levels in my eyes.
- 45:25Sorry.
- 45:26Then one day father happily announced he had found a car that was just right for them.
- 45:30A Buick Century Custom.
- 45:32Being a midsize it was neither too big nor too small for them.
- 45:36And being a Buick it had a V6 engine.
- 45:38Lots of room and comfort and a famous Buick ride.
- 45:41And that pleased them to go in.
- 45:43I'm pleased with punch.
- 45:45I'm tickled pink.
- 45:46I have to go on the back.
- 45:47All of which proves one thing.
- 45:49Maybe money can't buy you happiness.
- 45:51But it can buy you a Buick Century Custom.
- 45:53Which for a lot of people is pretty much the same thing.
- 46:03Fans of the Phillies players need your support in the balloting for the 1977 National League All-Star Team.
- 46:09Greg Luzinski of course having a tremendous year and he deserves to be on the squad.
- 46:13And don't forget the other Phillies on the ball.
- 46:17Larry Bowe, Mike Schmidt, Ted Seismore, Gary Maddox, Che Johnstone and Bob Boone.
- 46:21Richie Hebner is not on the ballot but he certainly deserves your consideration as a right-in candidate.
- 46:26So fill out a ballot at Veteran Stadium or look for one on the special Gillette display in your neighborhood store.
- 46:31Vote now and have a say at who plays in the All-Star game in Yankee Stadium July 19.
- 46:37Well Steve Hargan is out of the ballgame after two and one-third innings during which he gave up seven hits and four runs.
- 46:43And a left-hander Don Collins is taking over.
- 46:47Collins has a one and four record and a 5.00 earned run average.
- 46:52He has earned two saves.
- 46:53Collins appearing in his 15th ballgame as were 27 innings giving up 29 hits and 15 earned runs.
- 47:01Don Collins taking over. He has pitched previously against the Phillies though he has no lifetime record against the Phillies.
- 47:12Phillies saw Don Collins last weekend when they were in Atlanta.
- 47:16He pitched last Saturday going just one-third of an inning and the Phillies got one hit and one run off him during that time.
- 47:29The first man he will face is left-handed batting Tim McAvlar.
- 47:33Timmy is single to shortstop and scored in the second inning.
- 47:42Collins stretches, pitched on the way to McAvlar. A good breaking ball over for a strike.
- 47:52Timmy's average back over the 300 mark as a result of that hit he's batting 3-10.
- 47:57He pitched to him high, fastball missing one ball and one strike.
- 48:01One out on the inning. The runner at third base is Luzinski. The runner at first base is Hedner.
- 48:09Collins at the bell. Here's his pitch. Low and a good stop by Carell.
- 48:21He's got balls and one strike. Well, we're still initiating Chris Wheeler into the broadcast business and today he got another lesson courtesy of Western Union.
- 48:28I see you have purple fingers, Chris.
- 48:30I can't believe that machine could have that much ink in it.
- 48:33Pitch on the way to Timmy backs him away. Way inside, 3-1.
- 48:38Well, that ink is stored in an unusual place because it doesn't print that dark. It only gets... You only see the ink when you reach in there.
- 48:46Does this stuff wash off? I've seen asperg tans like this for 15 years.
- 48:49It'll be off in a day or so. Next pitch to Timmy is grounded foul off the first base side.
- 48:59Count is full on McArthur. Three balls and two strikes. Phillies have the jump in the ball game 4-0 to the ace of their stats, Steve Carlin.
- 49:10Left-hander Don Collins replacing starter Steve Hargan. Pitch on the way to McArthur, swinging in a miss.
- 49:16Timmy strikes out, stolen base for Hevner as he slides into second base. No throw at all.
- 49:23Second stolen base for Hevner. Timmy's striking out for the second out of the inning.
- 49:34Here's Bolo who dropped down a bun toward the third base side. His last time up, he was there as a left-handed batter at the time.
- 49:40And the brace didn't play the ball correctly at all. The rest of the third baseman turned his back on and went back to the bag.
- 49:47No chance that Bolo was going to be out on that play.
- 49:52Phillies with runners at second and third, two outs in the inning.
- 49:58Pitch on the way to Bolo is outside ball one.
- 50:03Remember the late starting time tomorrow night, 8.35 to accommodate Keith Jackson, Howard Cosell and Bob Euker.
- 50:10They'll be here to televise the game nationally, blacked out in Philadelphia.
- 50:14Pitch to Bolo, you want to take bets on who Howard will have lunch with?
- 50:19He has two or three lunches on days of the game, I think. Sparky's got to be with him. I mean, that's number one.
- 50:28The ball's a no-strikes on Boa.
- 50:35Here's the pitch on the way from Collins and it's a fly ball, shallow right field.
- 50:39A pop-up really. Gilbert's going back and he gloves it for the third out of the inning.
- 50:43And the inning is over but the Phillies have scored another run. They do it on three hits, two stolen bases in the inning, and two men left on.
- 50:52They'll have to play by play in a moment. At the end of three, the Phillies lead it four to nothing.
- 50:59You want it, we got it. That's your Chrysler Finnards team.
- 51:02Hey, fans, the whole Chrysler Plymouth team's on deck and we've got the cars for you.

- 52:28Barry Bernal leads off with a braze, takes the pitch outside for a ball and Carlton's next pitch of fastball is swinging a foul tip.
- 52:35What I want to count to Bernal, he'll be followed by Jerry Royster.
- 52:39He's leading 4-0, we're in the fourth inning.
- 52:45Here's the pitch on the way, swaying in a miss at a good curveball, balling two strikes to count to Bernal.
- 52:58Wind up by Carlton, one-two pitch, blowing inside, gets away from McCarver and off plate umpire Paul Pryor.
- 53:07Paul is two and two to Barry Bernal, he fly out to center his first time up.
- 53:17Here's the two-two pitch curveball high for a ball, full count to Bernal.
- 53:26Now to wind up by Carlton, three-two pitch, swaying a foul out of play, back up into the upper deck.
- 53:33He bounces out of the upper deck and into the lower seat.
- 53:40Three and two to count to Barry Bernal.
- 53:44Three-two pitch, swaying a tap foul down the third base side.
- 53:51Added stage three and two to it.
- 53:59Here's the pitch on the way as well as it flowed, but it was a two-two count evidently and now it is three and two.
- 54:07Three balls and two strikes to count to Bernal.
- 54:12Three-two pitch, swaying in a pop-up down the right field foul line, long run, Hevner in front of the picnic area, can't pull off the play.
- 54:21Bounces into the picnic area.
- 54:24Good effort by Richie Hevner. Let's pause for station identification on the Phil's Baseball Network.
- 54:29The Lehigh Valley's number one station for news and sports, bringing you Philly's Baseball for the 20th year. W-E-S-T, Easton.
- 54:43Full count to Bernal, wind up by Carlton. Three-two pitch, swaying in a melody stuck him out with a good fastball.
- 54:50Two-two strikeouts for Carlton. One down here in the fourth, that'll bring on Jerry Reister, grounded out second to first this first time up.
- 55:02In Montreal this afternoon, Woody Freiman pitching for Cincinnati and Wayne Twitchell, getting a start for the exposed Cincinnati failed in the first.
- 55:13Here's the first pitch to Reister, swing and a looper down the right field foul line, Hevner a nice over the shoulder, captioned foul ground.
- 55:21Well, Reister is out. Two down in the fourth, and that'll bring up Willie Montanez, who lined out to Gary Maddox's first time up.
- 55:34Carlton here is really mowing him down in the early going. Philly's leading four-nothing in the fourth inning.
- 55:41Willie takes a lot of time before he gets into the batter's box.
- 55:46Carlton looks like he really has good stuff today. He's getting his breaking ball over almost any time he wants and jamming a lot of hitters with his fastball.
- 55:54To me, it looks like one of his better performances as far as stuff wise.
- 55:58Pitch to Montanez is a fastball, low and away for a ball, one and nothing.
- 56:07Pitch on the way, curve ball of beauty for a strike called one and one.
- 56:12It's encouraging because Carlton in his last outing against Cincinnati did not have good stuff.
- 56:18Carlton had popped his back, something popped in his back actually before the game.
- 56:24Tim McIver said his stuff was very mediocre.
- 56:27One-one pitch, swinging a foul back and he's in front of Montanez, one ball and two strikes.
- 56:33He threw a lot of flat pitches, they say, and pitches that just kind of sit there and don't do anything.
- 56:38His breaking ball wasn't moving, his fastball wasn't moving, and he was lucky not to get hit harder than he did that night.
- 56:44One-two pitch, sidearm fastball popped him up to shallow left. Larry Bow out coming in Maddox. Jerry calls him off, squeezes him.
- 56:53Carlton now has retired the first 12 in a row. No runs hit the rares and none left.
- 56:58And after three and a half, it's four nothing fills.
- 57:03Hi, this is Harry Callis saying this is the year the Phillies go all the way.

- 57:31To make it in the gas station business, you got to stay one step ahead of everybody else.
- 57:35So with my Sonoco, I've got something nobody else has.
- 57:38Sonoco's penny-pinching pump. It could save you money on quality gas like my 190.
- 57:43The gas that's made itself below my regular.
- 57:46And most cars that run on regular can use it.
- 57:48Hey, if I don't want you to pass me by, I got to give you a price you can't pass up.
- 57:52Sonoco's penny-pinching pump. It can fill up your tank for less. That's my way of being very friendly.
- 57:59Did you know that if you're using gas with higher octane and your engine needs, you're literally wasting your money?
- 58:05That's why Sonoco has the penny-pinching pump with 190 and 220. Both are quality gasoline.
- 58:12My 190 could save you money if your car runs on regular.
- 58:15And my 220 could save you money if your car runs on premium.
- 58:18Saving you money on quality gas is my way of being very friendly.
- 58:23Sonoco's penny-pinching pump. It could fill up your tank for less.
- 58:33Step size more. We'll lead off to the fills here in the bottom half of the fourth.
- 58:36The nigh size grounded into a double play his first time up.
- 58:40Billy's lead 4-0.
- 58:43Except seven hits. Don Collins on relief is Steve Hargett.
- 58:49Young left-hander's first pitch to size. Fastball high for a ball.
- 58:54Want nothing to count the size more.
- 58:58Pitch on the way is a breaking ball that's low. It's two and a half to size more.
- 59:03Houston and New York, they're in the bottom half of the second inning. Nothing-nothing.
- 59:07Joaquin Anduhar for Houston and Craig Swan for the Mets.
- 59:12Two-0 pitch. Low for a ball. Three and nothing to count the size more.
- 59:17And Anduhar's having a good year for Houston. He's eight and three.
- 59:23Three-0 pitch. High ball four. Walk him on four pitchers.
- 59:28So size is a base runner with nobody out. That'll bring up Steve Carlton.
- 59:32Lefty's single to knock in a run in his own behalf his first time up.
- 59:37Collins the left-hander comes out of Lyons, Georgia. He has good stuff but he is wild.
- 59:44That's the 16th walk to his issue.
- 59:48In 27 innings, a throw to first and size is back. He's struck out nine and walked 16.
- 59:57Carlton probably will be punning here. The stretch by Collins and the pitch to Steve.
- 1:00:02The bun puns it nicely but it trickles foul down the third base line.
- 1:00:07One strike to count to Steve Carlton.
- 1:00:15Hebsize more. First base. Nobody out. Philly's leading four zips.
- 1:00:20In the American League, Cleveland under new manager Jeff Torbord leading three-nothing after six against Detroit.
- 1:00:26Here's the pitch on the way and a bun try is fouled off. It's nothing in two to Carlton.
- 1:00:33Johnny Hiller going for Detroit. Wayne Garland for Cleveland.
- 1:00:37Andre Thorne is at a homer for the tribe. His seventh in Larval Blykes number three.
- 1:00:42First game of double header at Chicago. White Sox lead open one-nothing.
- 1:00:47Wilbur Wood against Mike Norris. Lamar Johnson a homer for the Pail Hoes.
- 1:00:52Pitch to Carlton. Around a bun he takes it wide for a ball. One and two to Steve Carlton.
- 1:00:59Baltimore and Toronto are one-one after four. Mike Flanagan against Dave LeManshech.
- 1:01:06Here's the pitch. Carlton tries to bunt and misses it so he's a strikeout picker.
- 1:01:12Second strikeout for Collins. One down here in the fourth. That'll bring up the top of the order.
- 1:01:17Gary Manox who is fouled out and flyed out to center field.
- 1:01:21New York at Boston. New York failed in the top of the first.
- 1:01:25Eddon Figaroa against Ferguson Jenkins.
- 1:01:30Minnesota, Kansas City. Dave Golds going against Andy Hasler in California.
- 1:01:35Milwaukee Frank Canada going for number eleven for California against Brian Haas.
- 1:01:41Seattle will be a Texas tonight.
- 1:01:46Seismore first base and one out. There goes Seismore. The pitch is high to throw by Carell
- 1:01:53and the size is out at second base. Seismore thrown out of captain to steal.
- 1:01:59Pick Carell to ride Gilbert for out number two.
- 1:02:04Ball of no strikes to count. Gary Manox.
- 1:02:13Have a pitch to Manox. He pops a foul back out of play.
- 1:02:18Into the press box area. One strike to count. And a ball to Gary Manox.
- 1:02:25Two outs. No base runners. Four nothing. Fills bottom of the fourth.
- 1:02:30Have a pitch. Breaking ball. Ground of the third. Reister has it. Throws. Manox is out.
- 1:02:36Philly's retired in the fourth. No runs. Hits the rear as a none left.
- 1:02:39And after four it's four nothing filled.
- 1:02:43You want it. We got it. That's your price for climate dealers.
- 1:02:50In the on deck circle waiting for the right six passenger car to come along.

- 1:04:20Burroughs struck out his first time up. Leaves the National League and runs
- 1:04:25battled in with 55 tied for the lead in homers, 18 skies one in the
- 1:04:30shallow right center, long run mad-eyed keys there.
- 1:04:35Burroughs is out one down. That'll bring up Gary Matthews. He was called out on strikes his first time up.
- 1:04:45That's the gorgeous day for baseball today and we have great crowd on it.
- 1:04:53Pitch on the way to Matthews. Swing and a hard ground ball gobbled up by Schmidt.
- 1:04:57He throws, Matthews is out two down. That'll bring on Vic Carell.
- 1:05:05Carell is grounded back to the mound his first time up on a nice play by Carl.
- 1:05:14Four nothing fillies were in the fifth. Pitch on the way to Carell swings and he
- 1:05:25follows it back. One strike to Vic Carell.
- 1:05:36These Carlton's pitch changes high for a ball that's one of one.
- 1:05:47Now to wind up by Carlton. One one pitch breaking ball didn't miss by much.
- 1:05:52A little bit low. Two and one to count to Carell.
- 1:06:02Here's the two one pitch. Swings and he misses it. A sharp breaking curve ball.
- 1:06:07Two and two to count to Vic Carell with two outs.
- 1:06:10That breaking ball is really biting in on these right handed hitters and when he had that great year in 72 that's what it did for him.
- 1:06:17Two two pitch fastball fouled back out of play. Phase two and two.
- 1:06:24How Carlton will be happy to see his lifelong buddy. Tonight Joe Horner coming in with a Cincinnati Red.
- 1:06:33What a character he is. Well I'll be glad to see him Harry. He's a great guy.
- 1:06:36A lot of fun. Here's the two two pitch. Breaking ball a little bit high. A full count of it. Carell.
- 1:06:43There's a chance that he and Macarver and Horner might go out some more tonight I think.
- 1:06:49Possibility. Three two pitch breaking ball missed ball four and Vic Carell becomes the first base runner for the Atlanta Braves.
- 1:06:58Carlton retired the first 14 men in a row. Carell the first braid to reach base with two outs that'll bring on Rod Gilbert.
- 1:07:08Gilbert struck out his first time up.
- 1:07:15Here's a pitch to Gilbert. Curve ball that misses outside ball one.
- 1:07:29Now the pitch. Right. Get called. Gilbert tried to check his swing. Slider was there.
- 1:07:37Ball hit his bat. Tipped into the glove of Tim Macarver. It's one and one.

- 1:11:05Second baseman Rod Gilbert right near the bag makes the grab.
- 1:11:09Puff play with his high sky and Gilbert stayed right with it and made the play.
- 1:11:15Gilbert has done a good job at second base. He's a competitor in it.

- 1:12:12Right off the glove of Roycer it carries into foul territory backed up by Robinson.
- 1:12:18I'll have to wait and see how they score. It'll be scored as a base hit for Mike Schmidt.
- 1:12:23Took a funny hop off the seam.
- 1:12:26So Schmidt at first base with one down. That'll bring on Greg Luzinsty.

- 1:13:03Now the pitch to Greg. Try to check his swing on a low-breaking ball, did he?
- 1:13:08The ball prior looking over at Andy Olson set up to check swing. Two-on-nothing to count to Greg Luzinsty.
- 1:13:14Ball is knocked in a run with a base hit. Now his 46 runs batted in on the air.

- 1:14:14One-on-nothing to Richie Hevner. Throw to first base. Schmidt was not even off the bat.
- 1:14:26Gallon stretches. There goes Schmidt. Breaking ball is high. Carell's throw is not in time.
- 1:14:36A stolen base for Mike Schmidt. Schmidt he feels number six on the air.
- 1:14:44Mike at second base with two outs. The count is two-and-nothing to Richie Hevner.
- 1:14:48Philly's have really come out running this afternoon. I don't know whether it's Carell
- 1:14:51or whether they just want to change their image a little bit, but the team's kind of been standing around
- 1:14:55and this is much more exciting to watch. Here's the pitch to Hevner.

- 1:15:42Jack Fisher into his wind-up. Here's the pitch. William swings and there's a long drive to Hevner.
- 1:15:48Now he's putting his foot in the back of the league.

- 1:17:46Phase 2 and 2 to Craig Robinson, leading off the Braves 6 Atlanta's only base runner, Vic Carell, who walked in the fifth.

- 1:19:39And then, ball and 2 strikes to Fechorek with one out in the 6-thinning. Here's Carlton's 1-2 pitch, high for a ball, 2-2.
- 1:19:59Now, the 2-2, check swing foul down the left field line off the screen,
- 1:20:04and the one in the stands, bounds off to Larry Boa.
- 1:20:09It's sure sign, Harry, that his breaking ball is working so much today with all these check swings,
- 1:20:13because a hitter starts to swing at the pitch where it's coming and all of a sudden starts to bite in on him,
- 1:20:19and he tries to check his swing at the last minute.
- 1:20:212-2 pitch bouncing up there for a ball to full count to Tom Fechorek.
- 1:20:27Bruce Spock-Clair is just at a 3-run home run for the New York Mets,
- 1:20:31and he tries 4-4-1. 3-2 pitch, swing and a pop foul down the first-face side.
- 1:20:38It's out of play.
- 1:20:40It stays 3-2 to Pincheter, Tom Fechorek.
- 1:20:48Harry Bonnell, the top of the order, waiting on deck.
- 1:20:55Here's the 3-2 pitch, swing and a looper in the shallow,
- 1:20:58and Pincheter is going to be trouble. Boa can't get it the first hit of the ball again.
- 1:21:03Looping single just over the glove of Larry Boa,
- 1:21:08and Tom Fechorek has broken up Steve Carlton's no hitter here in the sixth inning.
- 1:21:16Not a screaming line drive by any stretch of the imagination,
- 1:21:21but a looping single for hit number one for the Braves in the ball game. Here's Barry Bonnell.
- 1:21:31Here's the pitch to Bonnell in the tie for a ball.
- 1:21:411-0 nothing to count to Bonnell.
- 1:21:46No pitch on the way. Passball is over and it's 1-1.
- 1:21:53Billy's lead 4-0, but Fechorek at first with the first hit given up by Carlton.
- 1:22:001-1 pitch, swing and a miss at a good breaking ball,
- 1:22:04and 2 strikes to count to Barry Bonnell.
- 1:22:17Pitchers are up at San Francisco for Pittsburgh Jim Rooker.
- 1:22:25Here's a pop foul out of play. Bob Neff are going for San Francisco.
- 1:22:30Pirates have lost 5 straight. Billy's are percentage points behind Pittsburgh.
- 1:22:36Fourth place in National Leads East.
- 1:22:401-2 pitch to Bonnell. Swing ground ball foul down the third base side.
- 1:22:45It stays a ball and 2 strikes to Barry Bonnell.
- 1:22:52Nothing in the third, Woody Priman against Wayne Twitchell.
- 1:23:03Here's the pitch to Bonnell and he pops a foul over the screen, stays 1 and 2 to it.
- 1:23:08Tom Fechorek at first base and 1-0.
- 1:23:191-2 pitch, playing in a pop up foul. Richie Hebner shading the sun,
- 1:23:24fighting it can't make the play. Plans and foul territory.
- 1:23:30Bino play stays 1 and 2 to Barry Bonnell.
- 1:23:34This is one of those days when the ball goes in the air,
- 1:23:37every infielder looks at the other one and hopes he'll call him off because it is really murder.
- 1:23:41There's no cloud, there's a very strong wind blowing up above the stadium which really affects the ball.
- 1:23:46The bright bright sunlight makes it a terrible day.
- 1:23:49It's like trying to catch pop ups in Florida during spring training.
- 1:23:541-2 pitch, fast ball laced into center field.
- 1:23:57Maddox coming on makes the catch.
- 1:24:00Well hit by Bonnell but caught by Gary Maddox.
- 1:24:03He's out of there 2 down. Fechorek holds it first.
- 1:24:06And that'll bring on Jerry Reister.
- 1:24:09Reister is grounded out and fouled out.
- 1:24:12Here's a stretch by Carlton and the pitch to Reister.
- 1:24:24Hard shot on one hop, full ahead as it flips to size for the fores on Fechorek and the brazer out on the 6th.
- 1:24:31No runs in the inning, Atlanta gets their first hit of the game.
- 1:24:35One hit no errors and one left.
- 1:24:37Out of the end of 5 1-1 1-2 it's 4-0 fill.
- 1:24:40Take me out to the Phillies game, take me out to the vet, buy me some hot dogs.
- 1:24:47Hot dogs? Sure, isn't that the best part of a ball game?
- 1:24:50Well now you can have the same hot dogs at home that you have at the Phillies game.
- 1:24:54They're called Phillies Franks. They're plump, juicy and delicious.
- 1:24:58When you go out to the food store get me some Phillies Franks or it's 1-2-3 strike.
- 1:25:04It's the next best thing to being there.
- 1:25:06Phillies Franks by MedSeries.
- 1:25:10Once upon a time there was a couple who needed a car.
- 1:25:12I mean we needed a car. My shoes have had it.
- 1:25:14They wanted a sensible car because they were sensible people.
- 1:25:17We're sensible people. We save strings. We buy bars. We brush regularly. We have our clothes.
- 1:25:21But they also wanted a car that was fun because they liked it good time.
- 1:25:24Anybody for a quick game of fish? Oh, cold glass of milk and you're on.
- 1:25:27Well knowing how hard it is to find a car that is both sensible and fun, they went straight to their Buick dealer
- 1:25:32whom they knew to be the most reliable source for such cars.
- 1:25:35Say you wouldn't have- Of course he would.
- 1:25:37At which point the dealer introduced them to the Buick Skylark.
- 1:25:40When the V6 and Genocompact size and the Ample Roomba pointed out, they were amazed at how much sense the Skylark made.
- 1:25:46Isn't that amazing? I am bowled over.
- 1:25:49And when the famous Buick Rides, Comfort and Road Manners came to their attention, they were quick to see how much fun the Skylark could be.
- 1:25:55Gee, that was like fun. Oh, you're not just listening.
- 1:25:58They were so overjoyed with their Skylark, they stopped the car, ran up to the first person they saw, hugged them and kissed him.
- 1:26:03I'm gonna hug you. I'm gonna kiss him.
- 1:26:05Which might not make much sense, but it certainly was fun.
- 1:26:11Now the new pitcher for the Atlanta Braves is gonna be Buzz Capron.
- 1:26:15Don Collins taken out for a pinch hitter did a good job. Pitched two and two-thirds innings of one hit shut out baseball.
- 1:26:22Struck out one, struck out two rather and walked one.
- 1:26:25Tim McCarver the first one to face Capron, the first pitch to Tim, slanging a pop foul about a putter.
- 1:26:31McCarver has picked up an infield single and struck out.
- 1:26:35Capron this year appearing in his 20th game is 16th in relief.
- 1:26:40One and seven with a higher in run mark, 7.00. He's given up a lot of home runs, 11 of them.
- 1:26:46Pitches outside for a ball.
- 1:26:49What a one to count to Tim McCarver.
- 1:26:52Bottom of the 6-4 nothing fills.
- 1:26:55Pitched it to him, playing in a fly ball center field, Barry Vanell down with a sunglasses.
- 1:27:00He has a lot of time.
- 1:27:02Puts it away, McCarver is out one down.
- 1:27:05We'll bring up Larry Bola. Bola has a Bunt single and has popped up.
- 1:27:11Billy's got one of the first on Mike Schmidt's triple. He scored on a wild pitch.
- 1:27:16Got two unearned runs in the second when Hedner was safe on a two base there.
- 1:27:20McCarver got an infield hit. Bola Bunt single. Here's a looper down the left field line.
- 1:27:26Caught by Gary Matthews two down.
- 1:27:33Hedner scored in that inning on Ted Seismore's double play ground ball and McCarver scored on a base hit by Steve Carlton.
- 1:27:42Right, Lewzinski knocked in the other run.
- 1:27:47Seismore is grounded in with double play and walked. Two outs, nobody on base.
- 1:27:52Here's a pitch to Seismore, swings and he misses it a breaking ball.
- 1:27:56Montreal has scored a run on a footy prime and after three the exposed lead Cincinnati won nothing.
- 1:28:02Pitched to Seismore, lying down the right field line, a foul ball and into the picnic area down the right field line.
- 1:28:13That's right where my son's little league team is sitting today.
- 1:28:17Under Freddy Snare's that ball. Two striped pitch, high and inside for a ball one and two.
- 1:28:24He has your hands he didn't.
- 1:28:26Oh, now he can field. One two pitch, bouncing fouls, stays one and two to Ted Seismore.
- 1:28:37Barry Callis may have two of the nicest sons you'll ever want to meet which is obviously a tribute to Jasmine Callis.
- 1:28:46Here's a one two pitch to Seismore, he pops him up.
- 1:28:50Shallow right field, Gilbrit going out, Ferro's coming in.
- 1:28:54It's Gilbrit who makes the play and the Phillies go down one, two, three and a sixth.
- 1:28:58No runs at the rares and none left after six it's four nothing fills.
- 1:29:06Now don't forget the Cincinnati Reds, Joe Morgan, John Bench, Pete Rose, George Foster and company will be in tomorrow, Tuesday and Wednesday night.
- 1:29:15We have had just tremendous games with that ball club and this series should be the same.
- 1:29:20Lana B on hand tomorrow night 835 star time and on Tuesday and Wednesday 735.
- 1:29:29Big red machine here Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday night. Jim Coddigan's Fred Norman tomorrow night.
- 1:29:36Willie Mopiniers will lead off to the Atlanta Braves here in the seventh.
- 1:29:41He is lined out to center and played out to center and Carlton's first pitch to him, slider that missed low for a ball.
- 1:29:49What a nothing to count to Monsonnier.
- 1:29:53Now the pitch on the way breaking balls, swing and a miss.
- 1:29:57Willie loses his batting helmet on the swing, the infestation flips his bat in front of the plate.
- 1:30:04Now he is disgustingly walking back to the on-deck circle.
- 1:30:08What a wonderful count to Monsonnier.
- 1:30:11He flips that bat when he swings like that and he catches it on the other end and he missed it that time.
- 1:30:16That really frustrates him.
- 1:30:21What a wonderful count to Monsonnier is leading off the Braves seventh.
- 1:30:26Now time is called, Greg Luzinski chasing something down in the outfield.
- 1:30:32Willie gets back in the batter's box.
- 1:30:36One-one pitch to him, curve ball that missed outside, it's two and one.
- 1:30:47Here's Carlton's two-one pitch, fastball followed to the screen, two and two to count to Monsonnier.
- 1:30:54He goes out to pick up a hot dog wrapper that is coming from the plate.
- 1:30:59Which is appropriate.
- 1:31:01Yes it is.
- 1:31:03Willie plays with a flair.
- 1:31:06Here's the two-two pitch, curve ball, line drive, deep right center field.
- 1:31:11That ball is all the way back to the warning track off the fence.
- 1:31:15Monsonnier's will get a stand-up double out of it.
- 1:31:18The second hit given up by Carlton.
- 1:31:21Lines double the right center field off the bat of Willie Monsonnier.
- 1:31:26So Willie is at second base with nobody out, it'll bring on Jeff Burrows who has struck out and flyed out to center field.
- 1:31:37I can hear the pitch to Burrows.
- 1:31:48Here's a stretch by Carlton and the pitch to Burrows, fastball high for a ball.
- 1:31:54Willie's lead four nothing, we're in the seventh.
- 1:32:02One-oh pitch on the way is the breaking ball over for a strike call, one-of-one to count to Burrows.
- 1:32:15Here's Carlton's one-one pitch, breaking ball, top foul at the plate.
- 1:32:21Ball and two strikes to Jeff Burrows.
- 1:32:25Praise Abba, two hits off Steve.
- 1:32:28Loping single off the bat, a pinch hitter Tom Pachorike in the sixth and Monsonnier's lead off double here in the seventh.
- 1:32:43Here's the one-two pitch, crowded foul of fastball.
- 1:32:48In the third corner, one ball and two strikes and holds to Jeff Burrows.
- 1:32:53He'll be followed by Gary Matthews.
- 1:33:05One-two pitch, fastball strike three called Structema, fastball on the outside corner.
- 1:33:12That strikeout number six for Carlton, out number one here in the seventh, it brings on Gary Matthews.
- 1:33:19Matthews has been called out on strikes and is grounded off.
- 1:33:31Here's the pitch to him, breaking ball, swing and a miss, one strike to count to Matthews.
- 1:33:39Like Carlton really has good stuff today.
- 1:33:43One strike pitch, fastball grounded, he's short, top foul holds Montagnier's, throws the first, Matthews is out, two down.
- 1:33:52Really Montagnier's holding on at second base and that'll bring on Vic Carrell.
- 1:33:56Carrell is grounded back to the mound on a nice play by Carlton and has walked.
- 1:34:13Here's a stretch in the pitch to Carrell, slider, he tried to check you, swing, did he check?
- 1:34:18Yes, according to Andy Olson.
- 1:34:20All prior checking with Andy Olson, Olson said no swing.
- 1:34:24He's done nothing to count to Vic Carrell.
- 1:34:29Here's the one-oh pitch, another breaking ball, it's been high for a ball, it's two and oh.
- 1:34:35First game at Cleveland is over, Cleveland defeating Detroit four-two, Wayne Garland won at John Hiller the loser.
- 1:34:43Here's the two-oh pitch, he went around on this one, tried to check again but committed himself and it's two and one to Vic Carrell.
- 1:34:52He's been able to check swings today by the Atlanta hitters, it's just a tribute to how well Carlton is pitching, what great stuff he has.
- 1:35:00Here's the two-one pitch, fastball, swing and a miss, it's two and two to Vic Carrell.
- 1:35:07So Jeff Torborg in his managerial debut has won the first game with double header, Cleveland four, Detroit two.
- 1:35:15Pitch, fly ball, shallow center, Maddox comes on, he puts it away and the Braes are out in the seven.
- 1:35:22No runs won, hit no errors in one left. After six and a half, Philly's four, Atlanta nothing.
- 1:35:28We won it, we got it, after crisis finish, Peter.
- 1:35:35We've got a consistent hitter in our lineup, Chrysler Cordova, the most successful new personal-sized luxury car in the last five years.

- 1:37:17The Rockwell Commercial Duty 7 and a quarter inch circular saw now on sale at Peoples, Coal and Supply Company in Stocker Town.
- 1:37:25Hard, but boroughs got over to make the catch.
- 1:37:31Carlin is out. That's one down on the seventh and here is Gary Maddox.
- 1:37:39Maddox has 0 for 3, has fouled the first slide to center and grounded the third.
- 1:37:45Gary has a seven game hit streak on the line.
- 1:37:50Billy's trying to wind it up against the Braves and set the tempo for tomorrow night.
- 1:37:54Remember it's an 8-35 game against the Cincinnati Reds who have just tied their game with Montreal.
- 1:38:02That is 1-1 now at the end of three and a half innings priming against Twichel.
- 1:38:09First pitch to Maddox is ball one.
- 1:38:13Reds have won seven straight games.
- 1:38:15Here's a swing and a blind drive down the left field side.
- 1:38:18It is a fair ball, rolls into the corner.
- 1:38:20Gary Maddox goes into second base with a ground rule double as it bounds into the stands
- 1:38:25and Gary has batted safely an 8 straight.
- 1:38:34Billy's first hit off the third Atlanta pitcher, Buzz Capra and overall their ninth hit of the afternoon.
- 1:38:41They have out hit the Braves 9-2.
- 1:38:44That's all the 4-1 lead over Houston at the end of three and a half.
- 1:38:48Joaquin Andujar pitching against Craig Swan.
- 1:38:52Bruce Bowclair has hit a home run for the Mets.
- 1:38:55Pirates did not score in the first half inning.
- 1:38:58The first game of their double header at San Francisco.
- 1:39:01The Bucks have lost five straight.
- 1:39:03That's Jim Rooker pitching against Bob Necker.
- 1:39:06Nepper rather I should say.
- 1:39:07Bob Nepper a pair of left handers.
- 1:39:11Chicago will play at Los Angeles later.
- 1:39:13St. Louis at San Diego later.
- 1:39:16And the Capra stretches.
- 1:39:19Here's the pitch on the way to McBride and the pitches ball one.
- 1:39:24Fakis won for three in his filly's debut as a starter.
- 1:39:28He has stolen a base and scored a run.
- 1:39:32McBride batting 262 a left handed batter.
- 1:39:36Crouches at the plate.
- 1:39:37Here's the next pitch to him.
- 1:39:38Big swing in a miss.
- 1:39:44He's got a one strike on right fielder.
- 1:39:47Big McBride.
- 1:39:50Those leave the ball game for nothing.
- 1:39:56Here's Capra's pitch.
- 1:39:57It's a breaking ball but it stays high.
- 1:39:59Two balls in a strike.
- 1:40:00Denny Doyle has homered for the Red Sox in the fourth with two men on his first of the year.
- 1:40:08The Red Sox leave the Yankees at least four to one in the fourth inning.
- 1:40:15Here's the two one pitch to McBride.
- 1:40:17Off the handle of the bat fouled behind the Atlanta dugout.
- 1:40:22Two balls and two strikes.
- 1:40:24Look on McBride since he came to the big leagues is to try and jam him, pitch him in.
- 1:40:28And that's why he uses that little tiny bat because he feels that he can whip it quick enough
- 1:40:32and kind of inside out the ball to left field if they pitch him in there.
- 1:40:36And Capra's thrown a couple pitches in on him.
- 1:40:39Buzzy at the belt.
- 1:40:41Does a lot of head waving and here's the pitch.
- 1:40:43It's outside.
- 1:40:44So he runs a full count on Big McBride.
- 1:40:46There's one out on the inning with Maddox at second.
- 1:40:54Steve Cowden working on a shutout.
- 1:40:56He has 34 lifetime shutouts.
- 1:40:59Full count pitch on the way.
- 1:41:01Popped up foul territory behind third base coming over his roister.
- 1:41:05He has room and he takes it for the out.
- 1:41:08McBride fouls out the third day, third base second out of the inning.
- 1:41:13And so if the Phillies are to get him insurance run on the seventh, it's up to Mike Schmidt who's having a good day.
- 1:41:19Schmidt is two for three with a triple of stolen base and a run scored.
- 1:41:25And Schmidt with a hit.
- 1:41:27Lost an 11 game batting streak last night and starts another one here today.
- 1:41:34Mike batting 262 as averages really climbed lately.
- 1:41:40The first pitch to him is inside ball one.
- 1:41:44Schmidt's averages, I recall, had gone down into the 230s.
- 1:41:50Yeah, he's between the bat a lot better, Lele's.
- 1:41:53Much more confident.
- 1:41:54I think Schmidt likes to play on the road even more than at home.
- 1:41:57Pitch on the way to him is a strike on the outside corner.
- 1:42:00One ball and one strike.
- 1:42:01He feels a little more relaxed, I think, playing away from the best because the fans here have been pretty tough on him most of the year.
- 1:42:07And as soon as he does something wrong, it seems like people start to get on him right away and he'll press a little bit.
- 1:42:15Pitch is high at all.
- 1:42:18Darrell Thomas has homered for the Giants in the first with nobody on base, so they have gone ahead of the Pirates.
- 1:42:26The first end of a double header and the Phillies could pass the Pirates in the standings today.
- 1:42:32Tritie checks his swing, the pitch is low and outside.
- 1:42:36Three balls and a strike to Schmidt.
- 1:42:49The capra stretches. Pitch on the way to Mike, ground ball hard hit the foul outside a third base.
- 1:42:56A ball that's never got more than a couple of inches off the turf.
- 1:42:59Speaking of the turf, Chris, you and I were both on the field prior to the game on a hot sunny afternoon like this.
- 1:43:05That stuff really bakes, doesn't it?
- 1:43:07Yeah, it's a tough field to play on on a day like this.
- 1:43:10The heat coming off is probably about 20 degrees hotter than it is normally.
- 1:43:14And tough on the feet.
- 1:43:16You're going right through your shoes when you stand down there.
- 1:43:19There goes the runner of the pitches foul back.
- 1:43:22Tritie stays with a full count.
- 1:43:24Gary Maddox with a good jump toward third base, he will go back.
- 1:43:27So on a day like this, when the temperature is, I believe, in the low nineties, or at least in the forecast to be,
- 1:43:33it could be as high as 110 out there at ground level.
- 1:43:40Phillies on top on the scoreboard, four to nothing.
- 1:43:43The Atlanta Braves, they split a four game series in Atlanta last weekend.
- 1:43:47And then the Reds come in tomorrow night for three.
- 1:43:50Pitch to Schmidt, he walked, low on outside ball four.
- 1:43:54Phillies with runners at first and second and two down.
- 1:43:59Phillies, the second walk ended out by Atlanta pitching today.
- 1:44:03Of course, walks led to the downfall of the Braves in last night's ball game,
- 1:44:07as the Phillies received four of them in the ninth inning,
- 1:44:10and then got one big hit to tie up a ball game that they trailed by three runs going into the ninth.
- 1:44:16Here's the ball, pitched to him, bounces away from Carell, both runners will advance a base.
- 1:44:21Ball one to Lozinski, a wild pitch charge to Caprice, the third wild pitch to Atlanta pitching today.
- 1:44:28Hargan had two.
- 1:44:29It's interesting to see what Bristol does here, as you just mentioned,
- 1:44:32and the other night there was a base open when Greg came up and they walked him to get to Hebner,
- 1:44:37was an unusual move considering there was a right handed pitcher on the mound and Andy Messerschmitt,
- 1:44:42and Bristol got burned with that move and be interested to see if he does it again.
- 1:44:47Looks like they're going to, I believe. Yes, they are. They're going to walk the ball.
- 1:44:52And so the crowd lets out a boo.
- 1:44:55It's at the same time sound strategy, it's also a little unusual,
- 1:45:00but I think the thinking here is, for instance, even though they are both hot,
- 1:45:04Lozinski is the hotter of the two.
- 1:45:07Well, Bristol's made no bones about it. He really respects Greg Lozinski as an RBI man and a clutch hitter.
- 1:45:13And Hebner is the type of guy that can stop all this in a hurry by doing what he did the other night.
- 1:45:18If you get a base hit here, it would really be a good lift for Richie,
- 1:45:22because no hitter likes to see someone pitch around some guy to get to him,
- 1:45:26especially a competitor like Hebner.
- 1:45:30The cloud comes over the vet right now and darkens the sun just momentarily.
- 1:45:34We hope it's momentarily. Here's Hebner at the plate from the wind up to pitch to him.
- 1:45:38A drive into left field, way back as Matthews, and he grabs it for the out.
- 1:45:42Hebner hit it hard, but right to Matthews and left and the inning is over.
- 1:45:46In the seventh inning for the Phillies, no runs, one hit, bases left loaded.
- 1:45:51At the end of seventh, Phillips lead at four to nothing.
- 1:45:54We got it, we got it, and your stripes are thinner, see you there.
- 1:46:00Maybe you can't fit a whole baseball team in a four to our Volare wagon,
- 1:46:03but you can fit more inside than in any domestic wagon if size.
- 1:46:07That's one big reason it's the number one selling wagon build in America.
- 1:46:10Another is it's four to our convenience.
- 1:46:12And now it's the season to get a real home run deal.
- 1:46:15See you are also Philly Landpipes, more so than a dealer at Volare wagon now.
- 1:46:19We got it, now it's up to you. We got it.
- 1:46:23Popcorn or Willoughby fellow?
- 1:46:25Neither thanks, we were just wondering how a professional popper gets his voice up for the big game.
- 1:46:29I drink dailies juice.
- 1:46:30Dailies juice.
- 1:46:31What is it about dailies juice that seems to help your voice?
- 1:46:34Who knows, it's got vitamin C in it, I know that.
- 1:46:36It's made with natural fruit juices, that can't do you any harm, right?
- 1:46:38I wouldn't think so.
- 1:46:39It's got the nine different flavors, but I don't think that's got anything to do with it.
- 1:46:42Probably not. So folks, take it from a real pro.
- 1:46:44Come on, come on, get dandy.
- 1:46:47Come on, get dandy.
- 1:46:49Come up to the natural thing.

- 1:47:34Brad Gilbert at the plate for the Braves swings on Carlton's first pitch and grounds one to shortstop and bullet throws him out.
- 1:47:41One away in the eighth inning.
- 1:47:43Braves are making a change now. Junior Moore, who was a regular in their lineup last weekend in Atlanta, will be batting for Craig Robinson.
- 1:47:53Junior Moore, right-handed batter. He is hitting 277. Two home runs and 13 runs batted in.
- 1:48:02Carlton goes into the wind-up, and here's the pitch to Moore as he swings in a missed strike one.
- 1:48:21Moore earned his shot at the Braves this year by hitting 329 at Richmond last year.
- 1:48:26Pitch is low inside a ball.
- 1:48:29Gary Carter has homered for Montreal in the fourth with one on. That says 11th of the year.
- 1:48:35Curveball is inside.
- 1:48:39So that puts the Expos ahead 3-1 in the fourth inning, and Dawson has also hit 1-4 with one on. That makes it 5-1. Swing into this by Moore.
- 1:48:49So maybe the Reds' seven-game winning streak is headed for an end today.
- 1:48:58Wayne Cuchill, of course, who is 0-5, would be the recipient. Here's a pop-fly foul out of play.
- 1:49:04He is pitching against Woody Prime and a couple of ex-fills teamed up at Olympic Stadium this afternoon.
- 1:49:10Two balls and two strikes to count on Junior Moore, pinch batting in the eighth inning.
- 1:49:15And the Braves have Cito Gaston out as their next pinch hitter, low and inside, full count.
- 1:49:22It was a pinch hitter who got the first hit of the day off Carleton, time for Shorick in the sixth inning.
- 1:49:29Steve Wines and the pitch is fouled back. Count stays full on Junior Moore.
- 1:49:47One out, nobody on for the Braves. We're in the eighth inning, and the throws hold a 4-0 lead.
- 1:49:53Moore swings and grounds one to left field of Bay City, reach for a high pitch.
- 1:49:57Tommy Hawke at the left field for a single. Let's pause for station identification. This is the Phillies' baseball network.
- 1:50:03Horts and Hughes all day every day on W-E-F-T Radio 14 Easton, CBS in the Lehigh Valley.
- 1:50:18Here's right-handed batting Cito Gaston as a pinch hitter.
- 1:50:24Cito is hitting at 2-38. First pitch to him is in for a strike.
- 1:50:29Gaston with one home run and six runs batted in. As a pinch hitter, he is 4-9.
- 1:50:36Swings and misses at the curveball. No balls and two strikes on Cito.
- 1:50:42We have a paid crowd here at the vet today of 40,126.
- 1:50:47That means this three-game series with the Braves drew over 109,000 fans.
- 1:50:52Here's a fly ball, well hit the center field, Maddox racing back, still going, still going.
- 1:50:57He can't get it. It bounds up against the wall. Gary rolls over. I don't think he's hurt.
- 1:51:02Here comes a runner for the plate. There will be no throw and the Braves have their first run of the ball game.
- 1:51:07That'll be a double for Cito Gaston. Junior Moore scores and it's 4-1.
- 1:51:15Let's try for that ball. That ball was really hit off the bat of Gaston and Gary almost caught it.
- 1:51:21He was getting a little close to the wall and he reached up at the last second and just went over his glob and he
- 1:51:26slammed into that wall a little hard and you always hold your breath when any outfielder hits the wall that hard
- 1:51:31but he's okay and the Braves get on the scoreboard.
- 1:51:34The wall of course has a lot of give to it. It is a plywood fronting with a free moving support behind it.
- 1:51:42You could see it give that time when Gary slammed against it.
- 1:51:46Back to the top of the Braves line up on Barry Bonnelle.
- 1:51:49One down with a runner at second base. He fouls off the first pitch of strike.
- 1:51:52Bonnelle is over three has fired the center, struck out and lined the center.
- 1:51:57Goes now with a three run lead. 4-1. Braves have four hits off Carlin.
- 1:52:05Pitch on the way to Bonnelle. Low outside. One ball and one strike.
- 1:52:18Carlin stretches. Here's his pitch. A called strike on the outside corner.
- 1:52:24Phillies are almost at the 800,000 mark and paid attendance for the year and they will top that easily tomorrow night.
- 1:52:31The one-two pitch to Bonnelle swings at a pitch in the dirt. It gets away from McCarver.
- 1:52:36He grabs it and throws down to first base to get the out.
- 1:52:41Another good breaking ball. The pitch has been so good to Carlson today and it's another check swing because the ball is coming in
- 1:52:47on the header and tried to check a swing because it was a ball but he couldn't and he records another strikeout on that slider.
- 1:52:54Strikeout number seven for Lafay. Here's Jerry Reister. Reister is over three. Two outs in the inning.
- 1:53:00Runner at second. Pitch inside and low ball one. The runner is Cito Gaston.
- 1:53:06A pinch hitter who doubled to knock in the only run for the Braves today. Carlson at the belt.
- 1:53:12Here's the one-nothing pitch. Strike call. Fool him with the breaking ball.
- 1:53:16Reister started to offer and then held up. One ball and one strike.
- 1:53:22Next inning the Braves may move Reister to shortstop and keep more in to play at third.
- 1:53:27Here's the pitch. Ground ball towards shortstop. Bolo grabs it. Here is his throw. It is in time and the inning is over.
- 1:53:34Braves in the eighth inning get their first run of the game on two hits and one man left on base at the end of seven and a half goes on top four to one.

- 1:54:58That's the way we do things at Amco because at Amco we get most cars done in one day.
- 1:55:04We do things right. Amco AA MCO in Allentown at 421 Tillman Street in Easton.
- 1:55:11That's 3333 Freemansburg Avenue across the Stubborn District.
- 1:55:14Coming on with their fourth picture of the ballgame, it'll be right-hander Dave Chaper Campbell.
- 1:55:18Campbell has an 0 and 2 record, a 3.91 earn run average, has saved one ballgame,
- 1:55:23making his 18th appearance this afternoon. He has already peered twice against the Phillies.
- 1:55:28Braves are keeping Junior Moore in the ballgame. He was a pinch hitter last inning.
- 1:55:32He will play at third base and Jerry Reister will move over and play at shortstop.
- 1:55:36Then Macarver, the first to face Dave Chaper Campbell.
- 1:55:43Macarver, Bola and Seismore at about in the Phillies 8-pinning.
- 1:55:48Carl Leeney only three more outs to win his 100th game as a Phillies.
- 1:55:53Campbell pitches inside ball one. Timmy is one for three today, single and scored in the second inning,
- 1:55:58as Seims struck out and fly to center field. Phillies lead the game 4-1.
- 1:56:03Pitch to Timmy is over for a strike right at the knees.
- 1:56:07One ball, one strike to Macarver.
- 1:56:10Timmy has lifted his average over the 300 mark again. He's right now at 305.
- 1:56:16Outside ball two.
- 1:56:21Those home runs by the Expos have knocked Woody Framon out of that ballgame.
- 1:56:25Tom Hume is pitching for Sincey in the fourth.
- 1:56:292-1 pitch to Timmy, pop up.
- 1:56:32Out towards second base, Gilbreth moving toward the bag, staring up at that high sky, grabs it for the out.
- 1:56:38Macarver out on a very high pop up to second base. That's one out of the eighth inning.
- 1:56:45With that, Larry has a fun single in this game as part of a one-for-three afternoon.
- 1:56:50Pitching for the red series beginning tomorrow, Jim Codd and Fred Norman for game one at 8.35 tomorrow night.
- 1:57:01Pitch to Boa blocks the bonnets to called strike.
- 1:57:04Tuesday night at 7.35, Randy Lurch against rookie Paul Muskell making his first major league appearance.
- 1:57:11Wednesday night, Christensen against Pillingham. Here's a bonnet towards second base coming hard as Gilbreth.
- 1:57:16He feels he throws. Safe!
- 1:57:19Boa gets his second butt hit in the ball game.
- 1:57:23There's a lot of people and I'm one of them that really like to see Larry Bolla punt the ball.
- 1:57:27He can get so many base hits like that and whenever he gets in a slump it seems like he won't do it.
- 1:57:32And the last couple of games he's just putting the ball on the ground like that and he'll get some base hits.
- 1:57:36Because the second baseman just has to make a perfect play on that and he did make a perfect play and Boa was still able to beat it out.
- 1:57:43Last night, Sizemore, who is at the plate now, had a pair of blunt hits for the Phillies.
- 1:57:47Today, Sizemore is 0-for-2 with a walk. He was also out trying to steal.
- 1:57:53Pitch on the way to Sizemore, a strike right at the knees.
- 1:57:57One out of the inning, Boa at first and the Phillies are on top of this game 4-to-1.
- 1:58:04Here's a throw to first base. Campbell is too late to get Boa.
- 1:58:08After the Cincinnati series starting tomorrow night, the Phillies will then have the next 25 consecutive games against teams in the Eastern Division.
- 1:58:24Campbell stretches. Here's the pitch to Sizemore.
- 1:58:27It's a ground ball fielded by the shortstop Reuster to second for one. Back to first to double play. Sizemore is grounded into two of them today and the inning is over.
- 1:58:35In the eighth of the Phillies, no runs, one hit and nobody left.
- 1:58:38At the end of eight, Phil's waited 4-to-1 now. Time for a tasty break.
- 1:58:41Next time the opposing side strikes out, why not strike up a little celebration right at home?
- 1:58:47With a true-true taste of a tempting tasty cake pie, pie apiece, a cherry or a blueberry tasty cake pie,
- 1:58:54they all come by their good name honestly because tasty cake pies are fresh baked, not fried, and loaded with ripe, juicy fruit.
- 1:59:01Tasty cake pie. They're a hip with a home crowd any day.
- 1:59:05Tasty cake is the world's best pie.
- 1:59:07The heart of this big, tough, coming-of-one.
- 1:59:10I'm Ernest Rotano, for Hill to Men.
- 1:59:13Now, last year, I fell in love with the Phillies.
- 1:59:18All year, they give me so many moments of joy. When I left, I'm saying, I want to be next to them.
- 1:59:24Home, space, close, I said.
- 1:59:26So they won't tell me a piece of lead in a parking lot to build my house.
- 1:59:31I bought their house for them. So I'm next to the stadium.
- 1:59:34So they can drink my wine, they can eat my food, and we can get together after the game.
- 1:59:39Will you please join us and share a glass of wine?
- 1:59:42Well, are you and your group finding it harder and harder to find something exciting to do?
- 1:59:50And how about a group outing here at the Phillies?
- 1:59:53A baseball game at beautiful Veterans Stadium is a tremendous way to spend a warm summer night.
- 1:59:57So why not pick out a date and get in touch with the Phillies' group sales experts and let them do the rest?
- 2:00:02Just call 803-5000. You'll be all set for a memorable night at Veterans Stadium.
- 2:00:08As you and your group watch these exciting 1977 Phillies play baseball.
- 2:00:13Things are starting to move for the Phillies right now as some of the other Eastern Division competition begins to falter just a bit.
- 2:00:19Even the extremely hot Chicago Cubs have lost two out of three.
- 2:00:23Here's Willie Montanese to lead off the ninth, fouls the curveball atop the Phillies' dugout of strike.
- 2:00:28Pictures are up at Dodger Stadium now. Rick Ruschell will go for the Cubs. He is nine and two.
- 2:00:34And Don Sutton, seven and two will go for the Dodgers.
- 2:00:38The one strike pitched to Willie. A ball ripped into left center field.
- 2:00:42It'll go for a hit and bounce beyond Luzinski and Maddox to the wall.
- 2:00:45Willie Montanese to second base will get there standing up with a double.
- 2:00:49Willie's second double of the ball game. Won the right center and this one to left center.
- 2:00:54He can hit. Willie Montanese is just a real good big-leg hitter.
- 2:00:58He saw it coming when he was here the way he started to hit the ball the opposite way and he hit three balls right on the nose to left center field today.
- 2:01:05He has a couple of doubles out of it.
- 2:01:10That brings action to the Phillies bullpen. Ron Reed getting up and starts to throw.
- 2:01:15Here's Jeff Burrowse is 0-3 today. Pitch to Jeff, high ball one.
- 2:01:21Carlton retired the first 14 consecutive batters in this game. A two-out walk in the fifth inning.
- 2:01:28The Vic Carell snapped the perfect game. Here is a line drive base hit the center field.
- 2:01:34Montanese is being waved around. The throw will not come to the plate.
- 2:01:38It'll be cut off and the Braves have their second run of the ball game until he's laid it four to two.
- 2:01:43The 56th run batted in this year for Jeff Burrowse.
- 2:01:49It's a real hot day as we've been staying all along here and Carlton, even though he hasn't thrown a lot of pitches,
- 2:01:55you just have to watch somebody pitching this long in this kind of heat that there is today.
- 2:01:59I'm sure Danny is going to keep a close eye on him now.
- 2:02:02It looks like Tug McGraw is now joined Reed out there in the Phillies bullpen.
- 2:02:07Gary Matthews comes to the plate. He is 0-3. Matthews takes ball one.
- 2:02:14Braves have six hits and two runs off Carlton. Now Mike Schmidt is trotting in from third base.
- 2:02:20This is a slow down tactic on the part of the Phillies to give those pitchers a chance to throw a little bit.
- 2:02:26Schmidt didn't stay long. He's headed back to third base.
- 2:02:29Those laid it four to two.
- 2:02:32Carlton stretches. Here's the curved ball. It's over for a strike.
- 2:02:36After the game, remember to stay tuned for the Tasty Cake Wrap-Up Show.
- 2:02:39We'll replay the highlights from this one. We'll talk with a ball player and we'll give you all the out-of-town scores.
- 2:02:44Here's the curved ball. Ground is foul outside of third.
- 2:02:48A ball and two strikes on Gary Matthews.
- 2:03:04Next pitch on the way and it's a fastball high. Now Valentine is homered for Montreal in the fourth with two on.
- 2:03:15It's got to be the fifth inning but at any rate that's the third home run of the game.
- 2:03:19Here's one fouled off and out of play by Matthews.
- 2:03:22I don't know if the fourth inning hasn't been reported yet. It might still be the fourth.
- 2:03:27At any rate, that'd be seven runs within the inning for Montreal and they would leave that game at least eight to one.
- 2:03:34Ground ball foul wide of third base.
- 2:03:39And Gary Matthews broke his bat.
- 2:03:44Coming back to the dugout for new lumber.
- 2:03:47Bear down on that scoreboard will you Chris? We've got the Tasty Cake Wrap-Up Show just around the corner.
- 2:03:53Well if I don't mess it up Whitey will so.
- 2:03:59What a thing to say about a famous dad on Father's Day. Yeah he's famous alright.
- 2:04:06Whitey father of five. Six. Six right. Six. Bigger pardon yeah.
- 2:04:12Two balls and two strikes to count on Matthews.
- 2:04:17Pitch to him on the outside corner tried to check his swing. I don't know whether he did or not but it's a strikeout.
- 2:04:24Matthews is out striking out for the second time in the ball game.
- 2:04:28Carlton's eighth strikeout and more importantly the first of the ninth inning.
- 2:04:33Burrows at first with one down and here is Vic Carell.
- 2:04:38Carell the first man to reach base for Atlanta today did it by walking on a three to pitch in the fifth inning after Carlton had retired the first 14 batters.
- 2:04:46Pitch is high ball one.
- 2:04:50Officially Carell is 0 for two. Grounded one to the mound and fly it out to center field.
- 2:04:55Philly's leading it by two or in the ninth inning.
- 2:04:59Stretch in the pitch.
- 2:05:09Pop foul out of play behind the plate. Philly's trying to win their 34th ball game of the year.
- 2:05:17That was a seven run inning for Montreal in the fourth. Seven runs are in.
- 2:05:22They lead Cincinnati eight to one at the end of four.
- 2:05:30Pitch on the way to Carell breaking ball called strike.
- 2:05:45From the action of the crowd right now in that foul ball I think our heroes over in television may have messed one up.
- 2:05:51Or made a good play but you'd rather think they messed it up.
- 2:05:55One to pitch high. Two and two.
- 2:06:02Philly's with four runs and ten hits. The Braves two runs and six hits.
- 2:06:11You can't say that the ninth inning of recent Philly's games have not been exciting.
- 2:06:16Swing and a miss like Carell. He strikes out.
- 2:06:19Carell gets number nine. Another great breaking ball that he threw there to Carell.
- 2:06:25The pitch starts over the middle of the plate and the hitter starts to swing at it and by the time he's finished it's way in on him.
- 2:06:30And it's some possible pitch to hit. If you hit it you're going to break your bat or pull its ball and that has really been left.
- 2:06:36He's out today.
- 2:06:37There is Rod Gilbrith two down in the ninth inning.
- 2:06:41The pitch to Gilbrith low in inside ball one.
- 2:06:44Carlton strikeout high of the year is eleven. Again San Diego May 15th.
- 2:06:49He beat Randy Jones that day.
- 2:06:52Calden won that game five to two.
- 2:06:55Calden tying for his seventh complete game of the year.
- 2:07:00Pitch on the way. Strike call.
- 2:07:05One ball and one strike on Rod Gilbrith.
- 2:07:08Braves have a one in the inning. There are two outs to runner on.
- 2:07:11Pitch to Gilbrith breaking ball. Ground ball toward Bola.
- 2:07:14Plays over to Pysboar. The ball game is over.
- 2:07:18A fourth shot on Burroughs at second base and the game is over for the Braves in the ninth.
- 2:07:23One run on two hits.
- 2:07:25One man left on base.
