- 1:37collects for teams, for sports, added all of his social media
- 1:42accounts, his podcast, his hobby platform and other links as
- 1:47well. A really great tool for

- 2:40hobby account. Instead, follow these two guys.
- 2:42They're the superstars here. I'm just here.
- 2:46Mail days all right, what I like to do here on the hangover is
- 2:51because we don't do this on sports cards live very often,
- 2:53but a few pickups we've had I I bought 2 cards last night guys
- 2:59on Fanatics collects weekly auction.
- 3:01I, I do a Sunday night show covering that auction and I just
- 3:04so happened to be bidding on cards as well.
- 3:07I won two cards last night Joe, you won one card.
- 3:11Let's see what we picked up last night.
- 3:13I'm going to go back to the old screen share here and who do we?
- 3:17Whose card should we? David, you decide my 2 cards
- 3:20first or Joe's one card first. I want to see Joe's card first
- 3:23please. All right, Joe, I'm going to
- 3:24bring it up and get ready to talk about here we go.
- 3:27Here's the card Joe picked up last night on Fanatics Collect
- 3:30Weekly Auction 2004 Upper Deck Hardcourt Vince Carter etched in
- 3:34time one of one in APSA 7 holder.
- 3:37Joe, tell us about this card. Why what?
- 3:39What brought you to it? What do you love about it?
- 3:41Why'd you buy it? How'd you make those decisions
- 3:43last night? Well, I became exposed to the
- 3:45card down there in Ontario when our guy Hoge picked up an MJ
- 3:50version of this card raw in the wild.
- 3:53I think subsequently he's had it graded, but it's a singular
- 3:59card. It does not connect to any other
- 4:01card. It is the only one of one.
- 4:04There's no of 20. There's no of 50.
- 4:07So it's maybe in the lexicon of of sports cards collecting, it's
- 4:11a masterpiece, one of one. And this particular 1, you can
- 4:15see the etched theme is that little wood chip there where
- 4:20it's acknowledging that Vince holds the record and he still
- 4:23does. He's tied now with Damian La
- 4:25Lord for the most 3 pointers in a single half in a playoff game,
- 4:32which is 8 and he went on to score 50 points.
- 4:36I actually have a vague memory of that 2001 Eastern Conference
- 4:41semi finals against the Sixers. It was the year Kobe and Shaq
- 4:44ended up taking the title, but the Sixers lost to them.
- 4:48But the but the Raptors and I mean Vince sanity.
- 4:51Come on. I know we got some Canadian
- 4:52viewers out there talking the other night with Jace reminding
- 4:56me of Kawhi. I feel like the Raptors and
- 4:59Vince Carter in particular kind of underrated and and and kind
- 5:03of A at the time Vinsanity was like he was coming for MJ.
- 5:07So anyway, a cool card and anytime you add a one of one in
- 5:12with Vince in a Raptors jersey you got to be happy.
- 5:16I love it, man. Air Canada.
- 5:17We had Air Jordan, he was Air Canada.
- 5:20What do you think, David? How do you like the card?
- 5:22I mean, I love it is I? Do you have a large Vince Carter
- 5:25collection or is this your only Vince Carter card?
- 5:28It I've got a couple, but most of the Vince Carter cards I have
- 5:32are when I was actually opening packs like in the early 2000s.
- 5:36So they're, you know, are, are fishing in the dollar box, you
- 5:38know, and, and, and scoring those kind of things, 'cause he
- 5:42was, I mean, like 99 to two, 2001, he was like blowing up.
- 5:47So I'm sure Jay Lee remembers all that.
- 5:49But no, it's more dunks. Yeah, it's more the hallmark
- 5:53now, David, of my Vince Carter collection, I would say.
- 5:56Well done Joe, well done. Beautiful pick up.
- 5:59I love it. I love it.
- 6:01It's great. I love Vince in the Raptors
- 6:02uniform and the one-on-one nature of it of course, makes it
- 6:05very special. All right, two cards I picked
- 6:08up. Let's go to the first one.
- 6:09Here it is. I picked up the 1966 Marvel
- 6:13Superman card. This is the what y'all mean
- 6:17$0.50 extra for gift wrapping card.
- 6:19This is card number 38. The 1966 Marvel superhero set is
- 6:25really cool. 66 card set and I believe there's six or seven
- 6:30different superheroes feature. They each have a subset within
- 6:34the master set. Here in the Spider Man cards are
- 6:37cards #34 to 44. This is card 38 Typically the
- 6:42first of that of that run is considered the rookie card.
- 6:45So spider man's rookie card would be considered card number
- 6:4934. This is card 38.
- 6:52I thought it was really cool. I thought for the grade in apsa
- 6:55three holder. It just looked beautiful for the
- 6:57grade. So I grabbed that I got all
- 7:00excited in the in the you know the the action of the auction.
- 7:03I grabbed this one. So this is my very first 66
- 7:06marvel superhero card. This is the spider man copy and
- 7:09then I picked up this one as well the Iron Man card number 19
- 7:13titled please please I'd rather do it myself and guys.
- 7:17I just think that this card is beautiful the colors a big image
- 7:20of Iron Man himself there his cards run 12 to 22 in the 66
- 7:26card set. This is card number 19.
- 7:28So I grabbed these my very first my very first marvel superhero
- 7:31cards from 1966 and I I just really enjoy non sport not all
- 7:37non sport, but some non sport and I'm excited to get these
- 7:41I've already paid for them. They are already being shipped
- 7:43to me here in in Canada. I will be hit with a bit of a
- 7:46duty customs duty when they come across the border, but I'm
- 7:51excited to to receive those. So there we go fellas.
- 7:54Those are mine. And any thoughts on those guys,
- 7:57David, what do you think? Yeah, I mean, I I love those
- 8:00cards. It's funny to me how with the
- 8:02superhero cards in these sets, that first card is so much more
- 8:07expensive than the other ones, even though they all came out in
- 8:09the same set. And I kind of refer that back to
- 8:12like the 33 Gaudi set with the Gehrig where those two cards are
- 8:18very similarly priced. I know, Jeremy, I've asked you
- 8:20that question when I was just a commenter about that actually,
- 8:23where you wanted that number 92. I think it is the first one.
- 8:27But in reality, because the second one has a little bit
- 8:29lower pop, they're at the same price pretty much.
- 8:32And it's just so crazy how that first card, like the Superman
- 8:36card you have too, is so much more expensive than the other
- 8:39ones in the same set. Same.
- 8:41What about you know, you I, I would, my mind went to the
- 8:44Gehrigs as well from 33 Gaudi and then my mind also goes to
- 8:47the Babe Ruth's, which it seems like for the Babe Ruth's now
- 8:50noted that the Babe Ruth's aren't considered the rookies.
- 8:53I think 33 Gaudi, a lot of people consider those to be the
- 8:57Gehrig rookies, even though he's got that earlier exhibit or
- 9:00whichever card that is, the oversized one.
- 9:03But for the Babe Ruth's guys, it feels like people just consider
- 9:07all four of them equal for the roofs #53 being the lowest
- 9:11number. The yellow portrait is kind of,
- 9:14to me, the most iconic of them all.
- 9:17But really, people don't really care about that when it comes to
- 9:20use. They like all of them.
- 9:22So I don't know how to reconcile that or if it even matters.
- 9:24But I what you're saying, back to your main point, as far as
- 9:27these superhero cards, you know, it's the other thing is that
- 9:30like I, I'm, I do covet more the first cards of these superheroes
- 9:36in the 66 dawn rush, they just weren't available.
- 9:38And I'm OK having these ones as well.
- 9:41But I'm also on this like I don't need to collect rookie
- 9:44cards all the time so that these new pickups fit into that for
- 9:49me. But that said, I still want the
- 9:52first the earlier numbered cards and then those would fit with my
- 9:55like what I would consider to be the the rookie cards.
- 9:58And I still do love rookie cards and collect them even though I
- 10:01also love non rookie cards. Joe, any thoughts on on the
- 10:05Marvel pieces? I love the little descriptors
- 10:09there about the wrapping paper and then, you know, do it
- 10:11myself. They they clearly are bringing
- 10:13some humor to the images. And as you mentioned, you
- 10:17definitely scored, you know, high, high eye appeal for the
- 10:21grade, the colors. 1966 was a spectacular year for reasons
- 10:27having to deal with my own birth.
- 10:29And I think that's also the year that that pretty famous Batman
- 10:34set came out too. So they must have been very much
- 10:38keyed into kind of, you know, the comic hero cards at that
- 10:43point. And, and that was sort of a, a,
- 10:46a moment like a renaissance moment for for that area of
- 10:49creation, but beautiful colors, beautiful colors.
- 10:52Right on. Well, appreciate it guys.
- 10:54I'm very excited to get those. Congrats, Joe on your Vince
- 10:57Carter. David, next time we record the
- 11:00hangover you'll have, hopefully you'll have something to share.
- 11:03If not, that's OK too. I showed it on sports cards
- 11:06live. I showed a pick up that I had at
- 11:08the at the card show that I went to so I didn't want to show it
- 11:11twice. Fair enough you can all and by
- 11:14the way, this is exclusive Sports Card Clubhouse content.
- 11:17But for more of us three, we are a part of the overall all the
- 11:23the crew of regulars on sports cards live on Saturday nights on
- 11:26my YouTube channel, which is called sports cards live.
- 11:29We also have Chris Hoge from card ladder, Josh Adams, who's
- 11:32Midwest vintage on Instagram and from 90s auctions joins us
- 11:36Leighton Sheldon from just collect comes in twice a month
- 11:40usually and joins us as well over there.
- 11:42We'll, we'll have those guys on this on the Hangover in due
- 11:45course here guys. But let's let's get into our
- 11:47first sort of topic of the night.
- 11:50And this is one that is provides a bit of continuity between
- 11:54Episode 2 here, The Hangover and last week's Episode 1 where we
- 11:58were talking about card deformities.
- 12:01And one commenter, I don't know if you guys have heard of this
- 12:04guy, but there's there's a commenter and I'm just going to
- 12:07bring up his comment right here. His name is Mookie Chilson.
- 12:11And he was so excited. He wrote what a brilliant debut
- 12:15episode, fellas. And I just thought that was so
- 12:17kind of him to give us that comment.
- 12:20He called us brilliant. He called us fellas.
- 12:23What a for extra emphasis. I was just so excited to see
- 12:27Mookie right, that this was a brilliant debut episode last
- 12:34week on the Clubhouse, The Hangover.
- 12:37So nice of him. But it doesn't end there.
- 12:41All right, there could the comment continues and let's get
- 12:44the rest of it. He says.
- 12:47I think there are malformations and deformities in cards.
- 12:51He goes on to say malformed cards are literally made wrong.
- 12:55Could be a rough cut, a fisheye diamond cut, ink missing,
- 12:59etcetera. Deformed cards include the
- 13:01category of malformed cards, but I think they also include post
- 13:06production alterations, pin holes, writing on them, corner
- 13:10where sun fading, paper loss, etcetera.
- 13:14He concludes and says therefore a malformation is a deformity,
- 13:18but a deformity isn't necessarily a malformation.
- 13:22So he's drawing the line and saying malformed cards are just
- 13:26produced with some flaw, whereas a deformed card is something
- 13:32that is that that is a, an impact on the card itself post
- 13:37birth, after it's come out of its pack.
- 13:40The pack is the womb. After it comes out of the card
- 13:43womb, it is therefore damaged in some way, shape or form, damaged
- 13:47or altered. So I thought this is a really
- 13:49interesting comment because we talked about this last week and
- 13:53we were kind of the last episode of the Hangover episode 1 was me
- 13:56and David and we were kind of talking about this deformities
- 14:00issue. But we we were making it up as
- 14:02we go along. I would say David, and that we
- 14:04were kind of figuring it out in our minds on the fly.
- 14:08And I think it's an interesting topic.
- 14:11And I like where Mookie Chilson's mind is going here as
- 14:16he's trying to take that concept and really, you know, flesh it
- 14:19out, think it through because we didn't really do that.
- 14:21And I think that this is progressing that discussion if
- 14:25we were to say, hey, let's come up with some definitions for
- 14:28what a deformity is or what a malformation is on a card.
- 14:31So I'll just kind of start with a couple of my thoughts guys on
- 14:36his comment and and then we'll go to Joe and David and get your
- 14:40thoughts. But the one thing that I I'm not
- 14:43totally comfortable with, with what he says here is where he
- 14:47says that malformed cards are literally made wrong.
- 14:50Because to me, when I think of a malformation, I think about the
- 14:54physical object itself, the physical nature of it, not
- 14:59necessarily the way it looks, if you can discern between those
- 15:05two things. So where I'm drawing, where I'm
- 15:07sort of drawing a line is I agree with him that a rough cut
- 15:11is a malformation. A diamond cut where it's not a
- 15:14perfect rectangle is a malformation.
- 15:17I have, I have a, my definition of diamond cut is different than
- 15:20a lot. I I separate diamond cut from
- 15:24tilt. A lot of cars there are printed
- 15:27where the the the card canvas is a perfect rectangle with 490°
- 15:31angles, but the image is applied to the was printed on the card
- 15:36on tilt. To me that's a centering issue,
- 15:39not diamond cut. To me, diamond cut is where the
- 15:41cut of the card is actually more like a diamond, IE it is not a
- 15:46perfect rectangle. You have, you have a
- 15:50parallelogram of sorts. And so I think that diamond cut
- 15:56is a malformation ink missing though to me like for example,
- 16:00the 1990 tops Frank Thomas error, there's ink missing.
- 16:04I don't think that's a malformation.
- 16:06I think that's a, a print error. I think that's something a
- 16:09little bit different, but I'm OK including it if we have to.
- 16:11I, I don't feel that passionately about it.
- 16:13I'm just explaining my thought on it.
- 16:16So, but, but I do like how he is separating out a card that comes
- 16:22out of the pack with flaws versus one that is flawed
- 16:25afterwards. And so I'm still not sure how to
- 16:29properly define or, you know, distinguish between malformation
- 16:33and deformities when it comes to cards.
- 16:36But I think there's something to this discussion.
- 16:38And again, I don't plan, I, I don't, I don't intend for us to
- 16:42get to the answer here today or ever.
- 16:45Maybe not, but we'll see if there's more discussion about
- 16:47it. But with all that said, let's,
- 16:50let's see which of you guys has some thoughts kind of ready to
- 16:53go first. Just let's see who has, who
- 16:55wants to go first here. OK, David, what, what are, what
- 16:57are your thoughts? Yeah, I mean man, I mean those
- 17:00definitions. Listen, you guys are smarter
- 17:03than me, but I'll tell you between free out of the packet
- 17:07and post out of the pack. I, I think some of the things
- 17:10that Jeremy and I even spoke about, even off air about it,
- 17:13you know, riding on a card, I don't know if that's really
- 17:17makes it a card deformed, right? The way we were kind of thinking
- 17:20about it even is like a tattoo, right?
- 17:23I guess there's some people that would say that that can, that
- 17:25can be a, a form of having as somebody be deformed, but not
- 17:29really, in my opinion, also like sunwear.
- 17:32Could that be like a major sunburn?
- 17:34I don't know because the sunburn heals and sunwear on a card does
- 17:38not paper loss. I can see that because it really
- 17:41does take off the card and it's permanent, unlike paper gain
- 17:47would not be right from it's ripped out of the scrapbook.
- 17:50So man, there's so many different ways to go through
- 17:53this. But I really think the, the the
- 17:57the way that you were thinking Jeremy for deformities is really
- 18:02pre pack pulled that came out in a negative way that is not
- 18:11typical. There wasn't very many of them.
- 18:13It's kind of a one off scenario on a card, right?
- 18:16Yeah, that is we're kind. Of thinking.
- 18:18That is what I was thinking last week and I I am realizing that I
- 18:21think that was a little limited in scope and I do agree with
- 18:25Mookie here that a deformity would include a card that comes
- 18:30out of the pack with that deformity.
- 18:31But a pinhole, I agree is a deformity, a paper loss post
- 18:36birth is also a deformity. So I'm, I'm, I'm willing to
- 18:40broaden the scope of the definition that I came up with
- 18:43sort of in my mind on the fly last week to include those
- 18:46things. So I certainly agree.
- 18:48But it like you, I love the analogies you came up with
- 18:51there, You know, ink or writing on the card.
- 18:54That's like a tattoo sun fading, that's like a sunburn.
- 18:57And even though sunburns go away, they, they can leave scars
- 19:00if they're really bad. So, you know, there are there
- 19:03are good analogies there, but I am certainly willing again to
- 19:06expand the scope of the definition from what I was
- 19:09saying last week to what we're saying now.
- 19:11Joe, what? What do you think about all
- 19:13this? Well, for starters, I, I feel
- 19:16like Mookie Chilson is Alfred Hitchcock, you know, who appears
- 19:19in his own movies at various moments.
- 19:22You just don't know quite when it's going to be He's he's
- 19:25elusive. He's very elusive.
- 19:26But if you look close, you will you will find the MOOC the.
- 19:30MOOC. I, I don't know, I, I not to get
- 19:33into like the semantics of malformed deformed.
- 19:37I just think all cards have stories.
- 19:39Some are, you know, production, pre production, production and
- 19:44then post production moments in their, in their journey.
- 19:49And one of the areas that I would distinguish is kind of
- 19:54deformities or malformities that are lapses versus more
- 19:59intentional participation with the card, for instance.
- 20:04Mookie is also well known for his pinhole collection and I
- 20:09think it was Greg made the point that, you know, generally pin
- 20:12holes are the byproduct of somebody, you know, showing the
- 20:16card on a on a board or something, you know, somehow or
- 20:20another displaying it. And for that reason, there,
- 20:24it's, it's kind of an honorific, if you will, this, this card
- 20:27meant enough to somebody at some point before maybe condition was
- 20:30understood to be so critical that they, they displayed it in
- 20:35their home or, you know, maybe in their garage or in their work
- 20:38shed or something. Similarly writing, I've had a
- 20:42number of cards where, you know, somebody puts the position of a
- 20:47player or maybe, you know, the, the average, their average,
- 20:51which to me also sort of speaks to a certain love and
- 20:55participation with the cardboard that I find compelling.
- 20:58I don't, you know, I, I don't want to necessarily champion
- 21:02them too much, but they're, they're, you know, those kind of
- 21:06deformities, I suppose that don't bother me as much versus,
- 21:13you know, things that are like registration and centering where
- 21:18I, I, I have a sometimes a little harder time getting past.
- 21:22Yeah, yeah. I don't think registration
- 21:24sending our deformities again. The other thing we were talking
- 21:27about the pinhole and the honorarium sort of thing or the
- 21:30how I think the way and I remember hearing that discussion
- 21:34I got the Greg was having, you know, I think it was Greg, but
- 21:38that the cards were a trophy to somebody and it adds the story
- 21:42those where there's a pinhole. That card was pinned on a board
- 21:45because somebody loved it that much to put it on display in
- 21:48their bedroom back in the whatever 30s, forties, 50s,
- 21:51sixties, 70s sort of thing. And that adds to the story of
- 21:55the card. And I love, I love the idea that
- 21:58cards have stories and were loved in their past.
- 22:01And I love the, I love the pinhole approach that Mookie
- 22:04has. I think it's one of the smartest
- 22:05approaches in the hobby. David.
- 22:08Yeah. And I just had a question for
- 22:10Joe for that card that he was showing the Kareem rookie how it
- 22:15had that little indention, right like at the side on the edge
- 22:20Jeremy that would card would not be allowed in his collection.
- 22:23Joe would something like that that looked beautiful in every
- 22:27other way. Do you think that that would be
- 22:29a deal breaker for you? Not a deal breaker, but it it
- 22:32probably would bother me more than some areas.
- 22:36Just I don't know that that little the cleft if you will,
- 22:41but but not not horribly. I mean I I guess I I would need
- 22:46it would need to be the right price like.
- 22:49And card dependent, right? It depends on like how big of a
- 22:52grail card it is too. Probably right if.
- 22:54It's if it's a card, I mean, this might tie into one of our
- 22:57other topics, but the the idea of, you know, a placeholder or
- 23:00something that, you know, you're eventually going to swap out
- 23:03because it is that important of a card for you.
- 23:07If it's not that important and it's just like something that's,
- 23:09you know, representing a cool, a cool moment that you had a
- 23:12chance to acquire a card, Yeah, I could live with it.
- 23:16Yeah, that that cleft as you put it, Joe was the deformity that
- 23:19started that discussion from that Kareem Abdul Jabbar, the
- 23:22Lou Alcindor 69 tops that we looked at last week.
- 23:26And that discussion continued in the in the comments or some good
- 23:29stuff in there in there as well. So yeah, I think it's a fun
- 23:35discussion and you know, I'm I'm thinking about when you asked
- 23:40Joe if it would be a deal breaker for him.
- 23:42And you know, Joe has had some pretty roughed up cards in the
- 23:46past. You have.
- 23:47And we're going to see one of them shortly here, guys.
- 23:49We're going to see one of them soon.
- 23:50But you know, I'd like to hear from people.
- 23:53If you're watching, listening, let us know in the comments.
- 23:56How do you think about this malformity, deformity, pre
- 24:00birth, post birth, and I don't mean birth as off the printing
- 24:05press. To me, at birth means out of the
- 24:07pack. How does it come out of the
- 24:08pack? What happens before it gets
- 24:11before it comes out of the pack versus what happens after it
- 24:13comes out of the pack? Does that matter to you at all?
- 24:17So I think it's interesting, it's a fun thing to discuss.
- 24:20And I think we're all still trying to get our heads around
- 24:22how this how we can understand these these various flaws and
- 24:28and issues that the cards have Any any.
- 24:31Yeah, Joe. Just I'm thinking about how
- 24:33we've, you know, adopted that phrase honest corners.
- 24:36And it's it's interesting because it seems like maybe
- 24:39maybe corners are the one thing that are allowed to be honestly,
- 24:43you know, utilized. But you know, when we something
- 24:47is sun damage or something has, you know, a mark on it, it maybe
- 24:51isn't considered as I mean, I'm I'm being a little exaggerated
- 24:55in that perspective, but the corners seem to be the the area
- 24:58that we allow for having kind of that engagement with the card
- 25:02that leads to a condition of detraction.
- 25:06And the, when corners are rounded and they, they're, you
- 25:09know, so you, we've got honest corners, which I think is like a
- 25:12petty, a Mike Petty sort of term.
- 25:14And then I call. So I, I take it one level
- 25:18further and call them sexy corners.
- 25:19And that's when the on, that's when honest corners are nice and
- 25:23symmetrically rounded across all four of them.
- 25:26Now you've got a sexy rounded corner card.
- 25:29And, and I, I think I love that because it's honest where it's
- 25:33that part of that story about the card.
- 25:35Again, it's not a in hole, but it just proves that somebody
- 25:38really enjoyed owning these cards, that they got enough
- 25:42wear, the card experienced enough wear that those corners
- 25:45were nicely rounded. Honestly, I love that.
- 25:50The other thing about that, that Kareem card that that divot or
- 25:54that cleft is that to me, that card is no longer a perfect
- 25:57rectangle and and different from rounded corners.
- 26:01And I know this, I know that doesn't really add up.
- 26:04But for me, I, if those corners are nicely rounded, but the,
- 26:09the, the side edges and the top and bottom edges are perfectly
- 26:14parallel to each other and not on any angles, then to me that
- 26:18is still like, it's not a perfect rectangle.
- 26:21I know, but it's a perfect rectangle with, you know, even
- 26:24on, on like in Canva and Photoshop, you know, you can
- 26:29adjust the roundness of corners and keep that rectangle intact.
- 26:33And so that's the way I think of it.
- 26:34That's, and this is not about, you know, telling people how
- 26:38things should be. This is just how I, what I love
- 26:41about cards and how, what I'm willing.
- 26:43So I'm willing to accept those rounded corners, especially when
- 26:47when they are post pack birth. But that divot in the side,
- 26:52that's not something that, you know, all vintage cards have
- 26:55where most vintage cards have some form of round the corner.
- 26:58So I just didn't like that. It wouldn't be for me, but it
- 27:01but hey, it's it's a it's a money saver for a lot of people
- 27:04who want to buy a lower grade card that that looks great in
- 27:08many other ways. So each to their own, right,
- 27:10Dave. Yeah.
- 27:12And and I, it's very interesting though that it is accepted for
- 27:15these rounded corners because in reality, when they're super
- 27:18rounded, it is paper loss, right?
- 27:21Like if you measure the card out, there is a little bit of
- 27:24paper missing on each corner that makes it rounded and OK.
- 27:30Yeah. Is is the is the term honest do
- 27:33you think? I mean, I was thinking it's
- 27:34like, is a crease dishonest? Is a pinhole dishonest?
- 27:37Is the term honest corners connected to.
- 27:40It's less likely to have been trimmed when you have.
- 27:43Time, yes, that's I think how Petty views it.
- 27:46Who I think came up with this is that he thinks that it's less of
- 27:49a chance it's been altered when it's honest.
- 27:52Honest corn. Yeah, honest.
- 27:54But you know what? It's a good question, Joe,
- 27:55because I think a pinhole, I even think a, a kid putting
- 28:00their initials on the on the card somewhere and pen or
- 28:02pencil, I think that's honest to.
- 28:04The intention back then was not to deceive anybody or RIP
- 28:08anybody off the the obviously you're not improving the
- 28:12condition of your card. I think those are all honest,
- 28:16you know, alteration. Those are honest alterations.
- 28:20The term alteration often connotes or implies, you know, a
- 28:24negative intent, you know, a misleading intent, taking
- 28:28advantage of somebody. But there are, these are all
- 28:31honest alterations. Now, rounded corners, I think
- 28:34they're also, you could say they're also an honest
- 28:37alteration, but they happen over time.
- 28:39It doesn't just, you know, it's not like you put a, you put a
- 28:41pin through a hole, you put a thumbtack through a cart.
- 28:44That's it. That pinhole is there.
- 28:45It's not really changing, but corners are gradually round of
- 28:49more and more over time. One of my one of my collecting
- 28:53buddies and I had this one term we used HBC handled by child,
- 28:59which was sort of, you know, a different kind of where, where
- 29:04it wasn't necessarily an honorarium, it wasn't
- 29:07necessarily an attempt to deceive.
- 29:09It was, you know, just a child doing what children do with
- 29:13objects that they find interesting.
- 29:15I love that handled by child. That's awesome.
- 29:18David, what did you want to jump in with?
- 29:19Yeah, I love that too Joe. That's great.
- 29:21That's a great thought. When you're talking about
- 29:24honesty, you know, about anti alterations and stuff.
- 29:27Some things that I also don't mind as much as other people is
- 29:30sometimes even like a little bit of dirt, right 'cause then, you
- 29:33know it hasn't been cleaned. Or the 51 Bowman's that have wax
- 29:37on the back, which I know can be taken off too.
- 29:39We'll take though. That's an honest back and it's
- 29:42some honest dirt to make it where we know that it hasn't
- 29:45been soaked, you know? You know, this comes like
- 29:47exactly. I just, I'm OK with these honest
- 29:50issues, even a bit, even a a bit of a pencil mark on the card if
- 29:55that's going to save me thousands and thousands of
- 29:57dollars. I think I'm, I'm OK with that.
- 30:00So yeah, it's a really interesting, interesting topic
- 30:03there. And yeah, I'm, I'm kind of
- 30:06really enjoying the idea that honest issues are really just
- 30:13ways to get into higher. I appeal cards at a low at a
- 30:16lower price, and that's something I think a lot of
- 30:18people are looking for these days.
- 30:20So all right guys, you ready to move on to the next topic?
- 30:25Oh yeah. It's related.
- 30:27No, we're going to save, we're going to we're switching up the
- 30:29order that I'd let you guys. We're going to go now to
- 30:31placeholder cards, David and the reason because hey, it's a nice
- 30:35segue we talked about you even said it.
- 30:37I think that that that Kareem card, that Alcindor could be a
- 30:40placeholder for people who might be waiting for and a lot of
- 30:43cards that are low technical grade and even have I appeal
- 30:49issues act as placeholders for a lot of people.
- 30:52So this topic came from a discussion, David, that you were
- 30:55having with midlife Greg. Now you guys either had it on an
- 30:59on an issue of midlife car chase or when you filled in on surface
- 31:03issues. You guys had, I forget which
- 31:05episode it was, but you guys were having a conversation about
- 31:07a much broader topic and you very lightly brushed on the
- 31:13topic of placeholders. And as I was listening, I
- 31:16thought they mentioned it, but they didn't talk about it much.
- 31:19Let's talk about it here on The Hangover today.
- 31:22The concept of a placeholder card and whether or not you're
- 31:25somebody who who likes to have a placeholder or you would rather
- 31:29just wait for the actual card you want to own down the road.
- 31:33And I've had varying thoughts on this in the past, but let's
- 31:37start with Joe on this one. Joe, are you somebody who has
- 31:40placeholder cards? You've heard people talk about
- 31:43them. Where do you fall on the idea of
- 31:46having placeholder cards in your collection, or for your friends
- 31:49even? I absolutely have been a
- 31:52placeholder in my collection type of collector, but I'm
- 31:58trending away from it. And I think it's partially just
- 32:01seeing, you know, the finite years of existence I have and,
- 32:05and not wanting to waste time, you know, getting, getting to
- 32:08the end game sooner, but that, that, you know, has to be taken
- 32:15into some consideration with budget.
- 32:17And, and sometimes it's a, a wait and see type of thing where
- 32:22I'm not sure if it's a placeholder card or if it's my,
- 32:26my permanent card. I just pulled this out.
- 32:28I don't know if you can see it very well.
- 32:29This is obviously a, a Johnson portrait.
- 32:32And I would say right now this exists as a placeholder card
- 32:36because it's got a lot of tobacco juice.
- 32:38It's got some stuff going on obviously on the back as well.
- 32:42But what I like about this card is Walter's face and the clarity
- 32:46of the registration and even just the color notwithstanding
- 32:50the fact that it's got tobacco juice on it is very nice.
- 32:53So right now I, I, I am thinking of this as a placeholder card,
- 32:58but it could be the case that over time I just learned to live
- 33:02with this one and, or embrace it because it's got features and
- 33:05characteristics that I've come to love over time.
- 33:08There's other placeholder cards that I very much discarded,
- 33:12wanted nothing to do with why did I ever do this?
- 33:15And so I, I think it's, you know, it's, it's a case by case
- 33:19situation. You made me think of something
- 33:22there, Joe. Which is you might go into
- 33:26purchasing a card as a placeholder, but as the time
- 33:29goes by, the days, weeks, months and years go by.
- 33:32If you don't replace it and you might, your motivation to
- 33:35replace it might diminish over time because like I have one,
- 33:38I'm going to buy something different now and then as those
- 33:41as those as the time goes by, you people might have the be
- 33:46prone to be to falling in love with that card and be like, you
- 33:49know what? I've learned to love it for what
- 33:52it is, for all of its flaws and issues.
- 33:55Maybe people learn to love them and keep them and then they that
- 33:57placeholder turns into a permanent copy.
- 33:59I don't know, I feel like that's probably happened to me over
- 34:03time, but I I bet it, I'm guessing it's happened to be.
- 34:06Hey, let us know in the comments.
- 34:07Has that happened to you? Have you ever bought a card as a
- 34:09place or as a placeholder and then been content and and fallen
- 34:13in love with it and decided, Nope, that's my copy.
- 34:16I'm in no rush to replace it. Let us know in the comments.
- 34:19Let's go to David, your thoughts on placeholder cards.
- 34:22Yeah, a few, a few years ago, I think I, I ended up buying a lot
- 34:25more placeholder cards than I have now.
- 34:27I think I've kind of developed into not really wanting to do
- 34:31that as often. Now when I buy a card, even if
- 34:34it's not the most perfect copy in the world, it has to be one
- 34:37that I'm OK with for for a long time.
- 34:40And if I find one that's better, great.
- 34:42But that's kind of my collecting style in general.
- 34:44Like, even if I find a card that I think is is one that I love,
- 34:49sometimes you find one that you love even a little bit more.
- 34:52And I'm OK with that card being a placeholder, even though I
- 34:55didn't even realize it was a placeholder at that time.
- 34:59I have fallen in love with a card that I did think that I
- 35:02would that was good for a short period of time.
- 35:04One that comes to mind is my Bill Russell Rookie.
- 35:06It's a one, but it's completely centered and has issues all over
- 35:11the place. But I love that card.
- 35:13It's actually one of my favourites.
- 35:15So I did find a way to love it, but I'm now more patient than
- 35:18I've been, which I felt like I've had to developed overtime.
- 35:22And the cards that are usually my placeholders in these kind of
- 35:25scenarios are very specific kind of things like low population
- 35:29cards. You know, I'm into these 48 leaf
- 35:31short print cards, they never come up.
- 35:33There's only like 200 of them. So when I like, I need this new
- 35:36Hauser, which somebody like me cares about that.
- 35:40But when one comes up, even if it's a bad version, I'm going to
- 35:43buy it. And when I find a better one, I
- 35:44will be a placeholder. So it just depends.
- 35:49It's card dependent, you know, but it's not often that I'm
- 35:51buying a card saying this is a placeholder.
- 35:54I'm going to like this card for a while most likely.
- 35:57When the card is super rare, like those leaf short prints you
- 36:00talked about, it comes down to just the own appeal.
- 36:03The appeal is in owning a copy of it.
- 36:06To quote Dan's Vintage, who coined that term already feels
- 36:10like way back. So yeah, that's where the
- 36:14placeholders become permanent based on own appeal in a way.
- 36:20So my own thoughts on placeholders are have kind of
- 36:23evolved over time. Historically, I never, I never
- 36:27wanted a placeholder card because I thought to myself, why
- 36:33put money into a card that I'm not going to keep if I can go
- 36:37find, but if I can take that same money and go buy other
- 36:39cards for my collection that I want to keep.
- 36:41You, you often, I mean, people often talk about, you know, you
- 36:44hear it, buy the best you can afford sort of thing.
- 36:48Well, if you buy the best you can afford, you might not have
- 36:50money as much money left for other cards.
- 36:52So it can be difficult to allocate your money towards all
- 36:55the cards in your want list, especially when that list is
- 36:58maybe constantly changing for for many people.
- 37:02So I've never been a placeholder card buyer and I never would
- 37:06have advised people to buy placeholders.
- 37:08However, I think I have another way of thinking about it now.
- 37:13And I thought of this when I was watching you and Greg talk about
- 37:16this, David, after, you know, my mind was spinning after hearing
- 37:18you guys kind of just talk about the topic as part of a much
- 37:22broader topic and not getting into it.
- 37:24And that is I think about especially a card that is a, you
- 37:29know, whatever valuable and important, let's say a card that
- 37:34you know isn't going to go down in value because they printed
- 37:38the 50 like a modern young guns in hockey or a Shohei Tops card
- 37:43or whatever it might be, a prism card.
- 37:45Like these cards are moving with the market all the time.
- 37:48So here's where I'm coming from. I think about the world of real
- 37:53estate and a lot of people will just buy a house to get into the
- 37:58market, to ride the market so that when they find the other
- 38:02house they want to buy in that city or neighborhood, they've
- 38:05already got some some capital appreciation, some equity that's
- 38:08built because the market has moved.
- 38:11So placeholder cards wise, let's take a let's take a 48 leaf
- 38:15Jackie Robinson for example. You may really want one and
- 38:19people feel like the market is on fire right now and it seems
- 38:21like there's no end to it, let's say.
- 38:23So somebody might not believe in placeholders, but might say, you
- 38:27know what, I'm going to go pick up 48 Leaf, Jackie.
- 38:29That is, you know, maybe I can afford it right now.
- 38:31It's not the card I want for my life, for my lifelong copy, but
- 38:36it gets me into the market. And then when I find a card I
- 38:40want more, I can take that to the show and trade it to the
- 38:42dealer. I paid 3 grand for it three
- 38:45years ago. Now it's worth 10 grand and it's
- 38:47going to help me get into that card I want.
- 38:49That's 25 grand because I got 7000 free dollars because the
- 38:53card has gone up in value. So I think that to me is the
- 38:57argument for placeholders is getting you into the market to
- 39:01ride the future value gains if that's the way that it goes,
- 39:06David. That's a great point.
- 39:10But also as I've more recently, I'm starting to think with
- 39:15placeholders, which I really, what does a placeholder mean?
- 39:19It means that you just don't love your copyright.
- 39:21That's what that really means. It means that you like it, you
- 39:24just don't love it. So here's the question.
- 39:26Do we have to wait for it to us to, to buy that new version
- 39:31before we let this one go? And we know that it's not our
- 39:36forever copy anyway, right? I mean, Joe, I love your copy,
- 39:39but I, I can see, by the way, when you speak about that, that
- 39:43card, I can see that it's, you know that it's not your forever
- 39:47card. So if you are going.
- 39:50Which card do you talk with? The Maddie he just showed.
- 39:52Yes, yes, right, yes, yes. Show that one more time.
- 39:56I love that. I mean, I think it's beautiful.
- 39:58But if you really believe that and we all have limited funds.
- 40:03And you're going to the National and you're going to possibly
- 40:06want to pick up a huge card. Do you have to pick up that one
- 40:10or can you use that because you know it's not your forever card
- 40:14to pick up another grail card instead?
- 40:16See that what you see, I think what you just said is correct,
- 40:20David. By buying a card you might not
- 40:22love and getting into the market, you're also giving
- 40:24yourself other options and opportunities down the road.
- 40:27You might not trade that Maddie. If it's a placeholder for
- 40:30another Maddie, you might put it towards something different
- 40:33altogether. All that does is give you more.
- 40:35It's like the real estate you might buy.
- 40:37You might buy a house in in in Phoenix, AZ to get into the
- 40:42market, but and you might have a value appreciation, you might
- 40:47want to go move to Georgia later on and use that money.
- 40:50Buy buy a house in Georgia, you are still in the market and
- 40:54going to have some value gain. So versus sitting on cash in
- 40:58your bank account, let's say that is earning 0 interest and
- 41:01has no capital appreciation and in fact has depreciation as
- 41:06inflation occurs. So that's a great point though,
- 41:09David, having a placeholder of a car that is not your forever
- 41:13copy May and I think does open up more options for you in the
- 41:17future. It almost becomes trade bait in
- 41:19that way. Listen, I'm I like the card.
- 41:21I want this card represented in my collection.
- 41:24It's I might replace it down the road.
- 41:26If not, I it also gives me other opportunities and options as I
- 41:29go to other shows and watch auctions.
- 41:31What do? What do you think, Joe?
- 41:34Yeah. I mean, I, I was mentioning it
- 41:36to David just the other night that I actually have 349 Bowman
- 41:40Jackies and one's an SGC 2, one's APSA two and one's APSA
- 41:462.5. And when So when you have the, I
- 41:49mean, one of them at least is was and, or might be a
- 41:53placeholder or qualify as a placeholder that I'm going to
- 41:56move out of. But in, in owning all three of
- 42:00them, I'm, I'm much more kind of aware of how they affect me,
- 42:04like what I could live with, what I could be interested in.
- 42:07And in some cases, like there's a card I've been fascinated
- 42:11with. It's an American caramel Rube
- 42:13Waddell. And it's got him, you know, Rube
- 42:17Waddell Hall of Fame picture with a very interesting
- 42:21personality. And he, he, he's, he's cocking
- 42:24back. It's a beautiful green
- 42:26background. And I've had a placeholder card
- 42:28of that for years. And I keep waiting for the right
- 42:31one to come along. But somewhere along the way, the
- 42:33excitement for the owning that card has waned.
- 42:37And so there's there's also the phenomenon of kind of scratching
- 42:40the itch and feeling like maybe I'm not as motivated as as I was
- 42:44or I don't need a higher end copy than I already have.
- 42:48I just have it represented. I have some version of it.
- 42:51So I don't know. I think it's a fascinating
- 42:53topic. I do have a little bit of a
- 42:56hoarder streak in me and I don't mind owning multiples.
- 43:01So it's, it's, it's fun to go in and maybe bring this to the
- 43:04National and trade up, but it could also be fun to bring home
- 43:09a new Walter Johnson big train T2O6 portrait and, and have them
- 43:16both and compare them and put them next to each other and kind
- 43:19of go compare the registration, compare the, you know, the, the
- 43:23color and, and all the different idiosyncrasies that you find in
- 43:27especially pre war cards. And then you'll be able to
- 43:30dispose of one when you find a different card that you want
- 43:32more. We're we're going to have just a
- 43:35limited time for our final segment.
- 43:37So David, get your last comment in and then we're going to move
- 43:40on. I love our last segment, so I
- 43:42have to do this fast. But Joe, then at the National,
- 43:45will you be bringing a card like that or one of your Bowman
- 43:49jackies just in case? What's your thought?
- 43:53I'll, I'll probably be needing to bring some heat because my
- 43:55bank account is depleted. So cards will be the, the, the,
- 43:59the power that I can exert if something were to emerge.
- 44:03So yes. All right, good chat.
- 44:06Let us know in the comments how you feel about placeholder
- 44:09cards, what you thought about this discussion.
- 44:11And now we're going to move in to the final segment, the final
- 44:14topic of the day. And this one is the first ever
- 44:17in the world of sports card content.
- 44:20For the first time ever. This is like WrestleMania 1, you
- 44:23guys. This is the Jackie off the very
- 44:27first Jackie off 1. And that is what is happening
- 44:30right here today. We are going to have a look at
- 44:34the 1948 Leaf Jackie Robinson cars that this panel here has
- 44:39possession of. They're in our collection and
- 44:42we're going to go through them all.
- 44:43And we're going to start first of all, before we do this.
- 44:47I have always felt in my for for 12 years since I got my 48 leaf
- 44:53Jackie in 2013. Up until about two years ago, it
- 44:57was my favorite card in my collection.
- 44:59If everyone, if anyone ever said to me, what's your favorite card
- 45:01in your collection? 48 Leaf Jackie, I consider it to
- 45:04be a top five, if not three most iconic important cards of all
- 45:09time. I don't care how many there are
- 45:10out there. I love it.
- 45:12There's a lot of Griffey juniors and, and, and Jordans and
- 45:14Gretzky's as well. I think it is an extremely
- 45:17important, iconic card and I love pretty much everything
- 45:20about it. And you're going to see a bunch
- 45:21of different things about them here today.
- 45:24Everybody. That's my opening comments, any
- 45:27sort of just opening comments before we show them.
- 45:30And 1st, we're going to start by showing Joe's evolution of
- 45:33Jackie's. But anything you want to set the
- 45:35table with Joe, just your thoughts on the card overall,
- 45:38its importance. David, how about you?
- 45:40I just think it's it's it's really one of the most important
- 45:43cards in the hobby. When you say it's like in the
- 45:45top five, I always get mad at Jeremy because I really believe
- 45:48it's number three behind the T2 O 6 Wagner and the mantle.
- 45:52And I think that if you want to try to argue that it's a, it's
- 45:56not Next, I would love to hear that argument because it is an
- 46:00extremely important call. And he'll fight you on it.
- 46:02Joe, sorry, I thought you were shaking your head, but do you
- 46:04have anything to? Just that I, I I find it in an
- 46:08incredibly compelling card and leaf set in general, just all of
- 46:12them are mini works of art, you know, with the, the variations
- 46:16in the, the, the prank quality and the color.
- 46:19It's David knows more about this than I do, but it's, it's an
- 46:23incredibly deep set and, and the fact that Jackie's, you know,
- 46:26understood rookie card is in that set makes it all the
- 46:30better. And I always, I always think of
- 46:31Andy Warhol for some reason. Why?
- 46:34OK, so let's go. What we're going to do is we're
- 46:36going to show Joel. So we're going to show Joe's old
- 46:40copy and then his new copy. He recently acquired a new copy.
- 46:43Then we're going to show David's old copy and his new copy.
- 46:48Then we're going to show my one and only ever copy and then all
- 46:51three of them together. This is the Jackie off.
- 46:53Here we go. Here is Joe's old copy.
- 46:55Get ready for this guy's talk about placeholders, talk about
- 46:58own appeal. I present you with Joe's old
- 47:04copy front and back. Look at that beautifully well
- 47:09loved SG-1 Holder 48 Leaf Jackie Robinson.
- 47:14Joe, you've got 60 seconds. Tell us the story behind this
- 47:17card. I probably got this from Chris
- 47:19Sewell back in the late 2000s from when he was selling on
- 47:23eBay. You can see there's also pencil
- 47:25marks kind of around Jackie's face.
- 47:28There are a few attributes to the card, you know, the color
- 47:32and the kind of contrast that I appreciated the clarity.
- 47:35But over time, I just, you know, even even that scar by his
- 47:40cheekbone, just I just left it just couldn't, couldn't quite
- 47:45hold on to it. As much of A hoarder as I am.
- 47:48So yeah, that's my two cents on that.
- 47:50And for those listening this card, it's a it's actually a
- 47:53beautiful front outside of some paper loss by his eye.
- 47:57It's off centered, but the yellows, the Blues, the blacks,
- 48:00the skin tones are beautiful and the reverse is a disaster.
- 48:04It's got all sorts of paper loss and discoloration.
- 48:07Joe, you want to add something quick?
- 48:09Just one quick asterisk, this was in an old SGC holder until
- 48:14maybe a year ago when I realized I would be moving off of it and
- 48:17I thought it would probably sell better in a in a newer SGC tux.
- 48:23Got it. Here he is.
- 48:24Description is killer on that card.
- 48:26I mean, look at his hat. That's what I always look at and
- 48:29look at the depth in that hat still.
- 48:31Beautiful. Like there are positive aspects
- 48:34of it, like this card, it's a beater.
- 48:35It is a beater copy, but it has beautiful elements to it.
- 48:39Now here is Joe's new copy. Everybody, here we go.
- 48:43Boom, 1948 Leaf Jackie, this is in APSA 2 holder.
- 48:48But Joe, this thing is a blazer. I mean there is no paper loss.
- 48:54It is off center to the left. The back is super clean.
- 48:57He came with Fanatics Collect top 30%.
- 49:00I appeal I believe after you purchased it.
- 49:03Joe, tell us one minute on this copy.
- 49:06Well, I liquidated quite a few cards, including the jacket that
- 49:11we just saw down at the West Coast Card Show.
- 49:13And my goal was to pick up one on the showroom floor.
- 49:17But just, you know, as you know, those cards are hard.
- 49:19Like you can have an entire showroom floor, you can have
- 49:225/10/15 of them out there, but if you don't see the right one.
- 49:27So I waited. I, I, I brought my cash home.
- 49:30And then this popped up on Fanatics.
- 49:32And I'd done enough research to sort of feel confident that this
- 49:37could very well be the card for me, my forever 48 leaf Jackie.
- 49:41And and. And so it was.
- 49:44Beautiful. Now here they are beside each
- 49:45other. Joe's old copy, his new copy.
- 49:49I just congratulations on adding a a lifelong hold copy permanent
- 49:54to the collection for you, Joe. Well done.
- 49:57OK, let's go to David now. David, here is your and here is
- 50:02David's old copy. It is an an in an SGC 1.5
- 50:07holder, beautifully centered, lots of sort of surface fading.
- 50:11I would say David 60 seconds. Your thoughts?
- 50:14Yeah, I when I saved money to buy this card, I was ready for
- 50:19it. I went to big shows and it took
- 50:21me like 2 years to be able to finally find a centered copy
- 50:25that was in low grade. I was on the hunt and it was
- 50:28super annoying when I, I was ready and just couldn't find the
- 50:30copy I wanted Found this one because it was centered and I,
- 50:35I, I actually really, really like this copy When, when it's a
- 50:39little farther away from you, you can't see the issues as when
- 50:43it has a nice scan or when it's closer.
- 50:46It's, it's a, it looks great when it's farther away.
- 50:50But anytime I looked at it and I, I would look at Jackie's
- 50:53face, I would just think in my mind, I love you Jackie, but you
- 50:56deserve better. And I just felt like I needed to
- 50:59improve upon him because it's such an important card to me.
- 51:03All right, this now, here we go. We're and we're going to bring
- 51:06up the the the new one beside it.
- 51:08There it is. We've now added to the screen
- 51:11David's new 48 leaf. Jackie, this isn't an SGC 3
- 51:16holder. There's an MBA silver sticker on
- 51:18there. And right away, David, I can see
- 51:20how much of an improvement. Look at the bottom third of the
- 51:22card specifically. Never mind just the overall
- 51:25clarity of Jackie, the color, but that bottom third, the name
- 51:29bar, the corners, the, the lack of it.
- 51:32I love it. Tell us a bit about the new copy
- 51:35and make it quick buddy all. Right.
- 51:37I love it. I like, I love it.
- 51:40I don't love it when I look at these two cards next to each
- 51:43other. I don't like how the yellow is
- 51:45kind of blending into the outside of the card.
- 51:48It is very toned. But I do love the card and
- 51:52actually this weekend I ended up getting that sticker on it when
- 51:55I was at the front row card show just because in case something
- 52:00smacks me in the face because I love that PSA one Jackie that I
- 52:03lost out on, which brought me on to sports cars live for the
- 52:06first time, which just had crazy, crazy color.
- 52:08When I look at Joe's and Jeremy's, I do get a little
- 52:11jealous of their color. But I do love this card and I do
- 52:15like that it's worn. It looks like it was, you know,
- 52:17it's a vintage card and I do like my copy a lot, but it might
- 52:22not be my forever copy. It might be a placeholder, who
- 52:25knows. It's a it's beautiful man
- 52:27congratulations on the upgrade congratulations to both of you
- 52:31on the upgrades all right we'll go to my copy now I'm going to
- 52:34put on the screen and here we go there.
- 52:37It is this is a this is my 1948 leaf Jackie Robinson.
- 52:41It's in APSA 6 holder. I've owned this card since I I'm
- 52:45pretty certain it was 2013, so 13 years now and I love it.
- 52:52It's it is severely off centered to the left, but I think that's
- 52:56pretty much the only thing that's really wrong with it.
- 52:59I love the color. I love the registration, the
- 53:01corners, the edges, the back is clean.
- 53:04I don't have a scan of that to show right now, but you know, I
- 53:07traded for this card back in the day and it's it held the
- 53:11position as my favorite card in my collection for you know, ten
- 53:17of those 12 years. The card that that superseded it
- 53:20was the 33 Gowdy Babe Ruth #144 the Standing pose.
- 53:24When I acquired that in August of 2024, I believe it was, that
- 53:28became my favorite card. And to this day, it jostles for
- 53:31position with the Jackie and now my Cracker Jack, Joe Jackson.
- 53:35So I love this card. I love the Jackie.
- 53:38I thought about improving on it when that PSA one appeared that
- 53:42David reached out to me about, but I thought, Nah, I'm I'll
- 53:46just keep this. This is a card that was, you
- 53:48know, I could have considered a placeholder, but I've just grown
- 53:50to love it so much. I have a lot of emotional value
- 53:53tied into this card more than anyone else would have.
- 53:56So I just love it. And now, finally, all three of
- 53:59our Jackie's beside each other. The grand finale of the very
- 54:03first ever Jackie off. And there we have them, Joe
- 54:07Davids and my copy. And listen they are.
- 54:10Look at how the difference. In look at how amazing they look
- 54:14next to each other, the yellow, how each of the yellows are so
- 54:17different and his hat is so different and it's color of his
- 54:22face, right? That's why I love Leaf.
- 54:25Unbelievable. It's unbelievable and they're
- 54:28all beautiful. I find beauty in all of them.
- 54:31I would be happy owning any of these three in my collection.
- 54:35Even you know, even Joe's copy, which is the lowest numerical
- 54:39grade. That's a that's a like it's not
- 54:41that much different than mine. You like as far as the centering
- 54:44and the shape of the card goes, they're very similar.
- 54:47Color is a lot different, but that's it's a case where, you
- 54:50know, I could sell my 6 get into his two and have a bunch of
- 54:54money leftover to buy other cards that, you know, like that
- 54:57wouldn't be the worst move in history from my perspective.
- 55:00A lot of people might think it might be not great, but isn't
- 55:03that a isn't that a wicked image?
- 55:05Guys? David is David's mystified
- 55:07David. You know, I love this.
- 55:09I mean looking at leaf cards next to each other is like my
- 55:12greatest hobby in the world. But Jeremy, that's a sick.
- 55:15I mean, that is a that's a big boy card right there that you
- 55:18have. And I know nowadays you don't go
- 55:20for PSA sixes with your crazy vintage stuff, right?
- 55:25And to Ford the menu, I could not afford this card a card, my
- 55:29card in that same grade just sold for like double and it was
- 55:33the IT looked the exact same. Actually, mine's a bit better.
- 55:35Mine has no tilt. The one that just sold well,
- 55:39mine might have a bit of tilt, but the one that just sold has
- 55:41like noticeable tilt. So and that's sold for double
- 55:44than it used like yeah, I can't afford my card anymore.
- 55:48So no, I don't buy cards like this in this high grade.
- 55:52To me, a six and a Jackie Leaf is a high grade card.
- 55:55No, I don't buy those anymore. Joe, you were, you were going to
- 55:57jump in there. Well, I mean it just unless
- 56:00you're Marshall Fogle, like you're going to have to settle
- 56:05somewhere. I think we've, you know,
- 56:07discussed this in other other moments.
- 56:09And so like this is a nice case study of like where where you
- 56:13might be willing to settle. Like I don't feel great about
- 56:17the centering on my card, but I feel great great about the
- 56:20color. Mine.
- 56:21If you can't see it on the top left corner there is a tiny bit
- 56:25of paper loss, but it's in the area that's white so it's almost
- 56:30it's difficult to see. Best place for it I.
- 56:33Love it, I love that. But as, as David, as a
- 56:37connoisseur of the Leaf knows, it's like all these Leafs are so
- 56:41idiosyncratic and, and there's, there's even types within the
- 56:45individual cards. And, and so you really have to
- 56:48kind of, you know, trust your own innate tastes and, you know,
- 56:52make the decision knowing that like short of, you know, a, a A7
- 56:57figure number, you're, you're, you're going to have to settle
- 57:00somewhere. And just to for clarity, yeah,
- 57:03agreed, Joe. I mean, this is where people can
- 57:05be watching this, looking at these three cards and thinking
- 57:07which one would I most like to have at what price point as
- 57:11well. I love the little bit of paper
- 57:14loss on the card. To me, that's a money saver when
- 57:16it's up in that, you know, obviously technical grade, it
- 57:20hurts, but I appeal, which I think is the more important of
- 57:23the condition standards for me anyway, it is and I think a lot
- 57:27of people nowadays that's a great way to just get into a
- 57:31card for lesser money. The other thing is that I don't,
- 57:35I know that the my card, I don't believe any of these images are
- 57:39juice. There's no there there's been no
- 57:42alteration to the saturation, the contrast, any of those
- 57:45things. These are natural scans.
- 57:47So that just also goes to show how different these cards were
- 57:51right out of the packs over time, as they, you know, hey, we
- 57:54ran out of go get some new yellow.
- 57:56All right, They go to the store, they get a yellow.
- 57:57It's not the same yellow. That's OK Print the cards.
- 58:00Let's ship them off. You know, that's the way that's
- 58:02the way it went, guys. Well, there we have it.
- 58:04The very first ever in the history of sports card content.
- 58:08The Jackie off is now complete. Thank you everybody for checking
- 58:13that out. Now we are good to basically
- 58:18wrap this up, you guys. I want to thank you both for
- 58:21joining. To the people watching,
- 58:23listening, let us know about the jackies.
- 58:26Which one do you like the most? Which one do you think is the
- 58:29most? Do you see the most value?
- 58:31And I don't think it's going to be mine.
- 58:33You know, Joe, you said that you're, you know, you don't love
- 58:35the centering on yours. You obviously don't love the
- 58:36centering on mine too, because it's the same centering.
- 58:38That is a OK, I feel the same way.
- 58:41Don't love it, but I've grown to love the card.
- 58:43It is mine. I don't think I'm ever going to
- 58:45upgrade it or upgrade by down grading.
- 58:48None of that. But guys, final 15 second
- 58:51comments, Joe, and your first appearance on The Hangover.
- 58:56Just final, final closing thoughts.
- 58:58Super fun to be on with you guys.
- 58:59Thanks to the Clubhouse Nation for including us.
- 59:02And yeah, great show, Jay Lee, look forward to more.
- 59:06Absolutely, David Chase. Love the show, love Jeremy, love
- 59:10Joe, and I'm just happy to be with both of you on anything and
- 59:13I appreciate you both being my friends.
- 59:15Guys same him. The feelings are mutual.
- 59:18Thank you to the team at the Sports Card clubhouse Adam, Greg
- 59:23and Mike and check this out so this is exclusive sports card
- 59:27live content on the sports card clubhouse.
- 59:30This is the hangover. This was episode 2.
- 59:32Thank you everybody this. Is over.
